A DIRECT IMPACT Many College of Engineering students participate in one or more programs supported by the Engineering Annual Fund, including: The Summer Term Alumni Research Scholars (STARS) Program, which provides a summer housing allowance for students assisting with faculty research. The Supplemental Undergraduate Research Funds (SURF) Program, a source of matching funds for undergraduate students working on faculty-sponsored research. Engineers Without Borders (Boston University chapter), currently assisting a community in Chirimoto, Peru. The University Nanosatellite Program, which is competing against other colleges to build a satellite for the United States Air Force. Student organizations such as the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Minority Engineering Society, and the Society of Women Engineers, whose members attend annual conferences and network with professional engineers. The Excellence in Engineering Book Awards, which provides stipends to deserving, in-need students to spend on textbooks and other academic course materials.
Make It Possible “Engineering classes are fun, but it’s what I’ve done outside of class that convinced me that engineering is what I want to do. Over winter break, I traveled with five other students to begin installation of a water filtration system for a small town in Peru. The College matched the money we raised, allowing us to take the trip. In the Society of Women Engineers, our big event is hosting the Professional Night dinner, where students meet and connect with alumni and industry professionals. These events are the reason I want to become an engineer, and the Engineering Annual Fund makes them possible.” Julia DeLogu, ENG ’09 Member, Engineers Without Borders; Co-President, Society of Women Engineers
The development of The Clean Energy and Environmental Sustainability Initiative, which started with a significant contribution from an alumnus and is helping to plan an academic program and research center. The BU Mini Baja Team, which designed and built a vehicle that competed in a contest inspired by the annual Baja, California, four-wheeler race. The Rocket Club, which designs, constructs and launches a rocket, helping to develop nascent engine technology.
