Berthoud donates bus to RAFT Special to the Surveyor

The Berthoud town trustees passed a resolution in August stating its desire to promote alternative transportation programs for the benefit of area residents after Berthoud Area Transportation Services (BATS) was reduced due to funding constraints, thus resulting in reduced access for certain area residents.

The trustees saw the non-profit Golden Links/ Rural Alternative For Transportation (RAFT) project as a viable means for reestablishing transportation services to residents affected by the BATS cutback. The bus was purchased by BATS with ColoradoDepartment of Transportation rural funds and was donated to the volunteer driver program RAFT, which is preparing to serve the rural seniors within the Berthoud Fire Protection District.

Ruth Fletcher-Carter, RAFT coordinator, stated that she and the RAFT board are appreciative of the donation and reported that RAFT is preparing to take the 21 passenger bus to a Larimer County specialty auto auction and sales on Oct. 19, at the Ranch in Loveland, located near Cross Roads and Interstate-25. The auction will be located near the Ranchway Feeds

building.

Proceeds gained from the sale of the bus will be used to help the nonprofit acquire a van or minivan equipped with a wheelchair ramp that will better serve the purpose of the taxi-like, door-to-door service that RAFT plans to offer. The acquisition will either come through a match grant program or through a direct purchase of a vehicle. Either way, an acquisition of a smaller lift vehicle will allow RAFT to provide services to rural residents who utilize wheelchairs in addition to ambulatory residents that will be taxied by volunteer drivers using their own vehicles.

RAFT is currently soliciting volunteer drivers, volunteer schedulers, riders, and a loaned or donated lift-equipped van or minivan. Anyone interested who would like more information is encouraged to contact the Berthoud Area Community Center at 970-532-2730 or by e-mail at bacc105@ aol.com.

What goes around and around: Horror movies A

s long as humans have been telling stories, they’ve been telling scary stories, and while horror movies are always being made, these frightening films do tend to have moments of glory followed by periods of quiet.

The first Surveyor horror movie was made in Columnist the late 1890s

by George Méliès. It was entitled “Le Manoir du diable” (“The Haunted Castle”), and without knowing it, Méliès created a genre that would Heidi go on to great commercial Kerr-Schlaefer success.

It wasn’t until the 1920s that Hollywood began to embrace the horror genre. Lon Chaney (1883-1930) was considered the first American horror-movie star. He was known as “The Man of a Thousand Faces” and, although he starred in silent films, he was renowned for being a versatile and pow-

erful actor, portraying characters who were tortured souls. Chaney’s most famous roles were in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (1923) and “The Phantom of the Opera” (1925).

In the mid-century, horror films went from gothic themes to featuring more current-day issues such as the fear of nuclear war, and films about Armageddon and demons became popular. The 1960s saw the first “slasher” movie, a subgenre of horror usually involving a psychopathic killer on the loose, terrorizing everyone from camp kids to apartment dwellers.

During the mid-century, the Bmovie came on the scene, and the horror genre began to become associated with low-budget films. Despite the B-movie association, horror movies have won plenty of Oscars over the years, although the wins are usually in categories such as sound, makeup and visual effects.

The occult theme became wildly popular in the 1970s, with films such as “The Exorcist” (1973). Horror reached a high level of popularity during the ‘70s. Stephen King’s “Carrie” (1976) had huge commercial success. Sissy Spacek, who starred in the film, was nominated for Best

Actress, while her co-star, Piper Laurie, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. A survey in October 2008 revealed that “Carrie” is still considered one of the most popular Halloween movies among teenagers.

A slew of 1980s horror movies became cult classics, such as Sam Raimi’s “Evil Dead” movies, “Fright Night” (1985) and “The Lost Boys” (1987). Originally panned by the critics, these films have a dedicated following of fans.

There was a major dip in the popularity of horror films in the 1990s. For the first time young people were not interested in bloody B-movies. Suspense became the name of the game, and the over-the-top blood-and-guts of the ‘70s and ‘80s was replaced by films with science-fiction themes and movies using high-end special effects.

While typical horror went out of fashion with its target demographic of young people, it was replaced by a more tongue-in-cheek style of horror movie. The blood-and-guts went from gross to funny. The subgenre of comedy/horror, already existed, but directors like Wes Craven and Peter Jackson took it to an entirely new

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is a two week festival, held in Munich, Bavaria, Germany.

While it is a giant world festival in Germany, Oktoberfest celebrations are held around the world during this time. So, if you can’t get to the fair in Germany, you can participate in a local event.

It’s time to eat, drink, and be merry! Each year, the Oktoberfest is opened, as the mayor of Munich taps a keg a of beer. There is even a special brew made, aptly called Oktoberfest beer.

Oktoberfest is not just a celebration of beer. It is a huge festival with lots of food, music, dancing, rides, and carnival booths. Each year millions of people from all over the world come to the fair. Oktoberfest celebrations and festivals are held around the world during this time. These festivals also celebrate the rich heritage of the German people.

Origin of Oktoberfest Day: The very first Oktoberfest was held on Oct. 12, 1810. It was held to

While it’s had its ups and downs, the horror genre will never really go away. In fact, even in years when the scary movie is unpopular at the theaters, a few will be released during the month of October to remind us that the feeling of fear is a very good thrill indeed. commemorate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig (King Ludwig 1) to Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The wedding took place on Oct. 12, and a great horse race (in celebration of the marriage) was held a few days later on Oct. 17. The marriage was celebrated annually, and came to be known as Oktoberfest.

Early Oktoberfest celebrations were held in October. The festival was eventually moved to September, as the weather was better earlier in the Fall.

Oktoberfest has been held annually since 1810. Throughout this time, it has been cancelled a few times, due to wars, and once due to a major Cholera outbreak (1854) in the region.

Over the years, the festival grew.

Carnival booths appeared. Beer became a central theme, and flowed freely. Food was a big part of the festivities. And, later rides were added.

Millions of people annually flock to Oktoberfest in Munich.

Prostate cancer survivor helps raise awareness of the disease and treatment options Special to the Surveyor As a prostate cancer survivor, Colorado resident Ken Reiss celebrates the gift of life every month of the year, but September has a particularly special meaning to him. September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and it gives Ken an opportunity to help bring attention to the disease he is battling by sharing his story with others.

Ken has worked hard his entire life, first in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam war and later as a welder and pipefitter working throughout the western United States. But as tough as Ken is, nothing could prepare him or his wife Nancy for the 2011 diagnosis that would change their lives: prostate cancer. Ken was one of the fortunate ones — a routine blood test during a physical showed a high level of PSA, the protein that can indicate prostate cancer. Doctors immediately ordered a biopsy, which confirmed Ken’s fears, and he underwent surgery to remove his prostate.

“I knew that it was not that unusual for men my age to be at risk for prostate cancer, but it still took my breath away when the doctor gave me that diagnosis,” Ken said. “I didn’t know a lot about prostate cancer at first, and the doctors wanted to move quickly to treat it so I really had to rely on them for the information I needed. It was frustrating.”

In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately one in six men will be di-

agnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetimes, which translates to more than 200,000 diagnoses annually. Prostate cancer is relatively rare in men under 40, but the chance of being diagnosed rises significantly after age 50 and roughly two-thirds of prostate cancers are found in men over the age of 65.

Like Ken’s experience, signs of prostate cancer often are first detected by a doctor during a routine check-up. Symptoms can include a need to urinate frequently, difficulty urinating, a painful or burning sensation when urinating, loss of bladder control, numbness or pain in the hips or legs and erectile dysfunction. Men should consider a yearly rectal examination and PSA test.

While Ken was fortunate to have his prostate cancer detected during a routine physical, his recovery didn’t go quite as easily. His post-surgical PSA levels did not decline as quickly as doctors hoped, indicating that the cancer may have spread. With more questions than answers, Ken and Nancy sought a meeting directly with their oncologist, a request that Ken’s physician denied, saying that was his job.

Feeling in the dark about Ken’s diagnosis and treatment options, the Reiss’ took matters into their own hands.

They wanted a second opinion and one of their first calls was to Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) in Goodyear, Ariz. Within two days, the Reiss’ were on a plane.

Once Ken arrived in Arizona, the CTCA team examined him, performed a number of additional tests and reviewed his medications. Surprisingly, they found that Ken hadn’t been given a second drug prior to and along with the Lupron injections he had received in Denver. They also discovered a tumor in Ken’s prostate bed and another on one of his lymph nodes.

CTCA provided Ken with a treatment plan that included radiation, infusions and Lupron injections, and for a short time the drug they felt he should have been given prior to and with the Lupron.

The window of opportunity for the secondary drug to work in conjunction with the Lupron expired shortly after arriving in Arizona. After presenting the treatment plan to Ken and Nancy, the CTCA team asked the Reiss’ for their input, answered all their questions and assured them that there were always other options to consider.

Ken and Nancy knew that asking the right questions could help them better understand their cancer diagnosis, and potentially even improve the treatment Ken received. Some of the questions that CTCA encourages all cancer patients to ask their physicians are: • What types of diagnostic tests do you perform? An accurate diagnosis is critical because it is the basis upon which your treatment plan will be determined • What treatment options are available? What do you recommend and why?

Many types of cancer have a variety of treatment options available.

• What happens if a treatment approach doesn’t work for me? At any point, you should feel comfortable asking your doctor about the status of your treatment.

• What are the side effects of treatment, and how often do your patients experience them? No two people will have the exact same response to cancer treatment, and side effects may vary depending on what type of treatment you choose.

• How many patients have you treated with my type and stage of cancer, and how successful have you been? Ask how much experience your doctor has treating your type and stage of cancer and whether he/she is a board-certified specialist.

• Who will be involved in my care, how often will they meet and who is my main point of contact? An integrated care team including a surgical, medical and/ or radiation oncologist; dietitian; naturopathic oncology provider; clinical nurse and medical advocate (often a nurse care manager) can ensure you get support for your entire well-being during treatment.

“My cancer diagnosis was a life-changing event, and getting a second opinion helped me make a more informed decision about my treatment,” Ken said. “I recommend everyone get a second opinion because it put me back in control and gave me more confidence and better peace of mind.

oesn’t it seem that as we get older we accumulate more things?

I’ll bet every one of you has a junk drawer, shelf, closet or room where you amass things. Some, like a person I know, had multiple storage units Surveyor stuffed with Columnist stuff.

This recently came to mind as I cleaned out what I call my jewelry box on my bedroom dresser.

Jewelry box is a misnomer because it conBob tains mostly McDonnell items that are not jewelry — or valuables to anyone but me.

Diving into this treasure trove I found some interesting relics.

These items included an old tube of Chapstick, one die from a board game and some matches. The Chapstick was used up. I don’t play board games. And I can’t remember the last

I also discovered a round metal pin that said Old Fart. No, comment.

The big find of the day was keys. I mean all sizes, metals and types of keys. There were 24 keys in the box.

Why do I have two dozen keys that I haven’t used in years? I think I can identify the use for about two of them. Some could be from a house I no longer own. A couple of them are for suitcases that made the trip to Goodwill sometime after the tuxedo shirt.

Yes, I know I should throw most of these items out, but what if I find that I need one of them and don’t know it?

My fear is that the day after I discard any of these worthless pieces, they will become something that I really, really need.

Hasn’t that happened to you? Or is it just me?

I will probably save a few of the gems I found, and toss others. I don’t think this qualifies me as a candidate for the television show Hoarders.

Speaking of dog tags, in one of the drawers of the box were my military dog tags. I guess I want to be ready in case they call me back to duty some 50 years later.

Shaking my head, I continued.

Next was one plastic collar stay — even though a shirt needs two of them.

Also, shirt related, were some cheap plastic tuxedo shirt studs.

Some years ago, I waited tables and had to wear a tuxedo shirt, bow tie and cummerbund. The shirt, long ago, was donated to Goodwill.

Special to the Surveyor A new study in the journal Neurology suggests that working out is the most effective way to protect the brain from Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers studied roughly 700 study participants from Scotland, all of whom were born in 1936. Each participant reported their levels of leisure and physical activity at age 70, rating their physical activity on a scale from moving only to perform household chores to participating in heavy exercise or competitive sport several times per week. Participants were also asked to rate how often they engaged in social or intellectual activities.

At age 73, participants received an MRI to measure certain biomarkers in their brains. Those who participated

in more physical activity showed less brain shrinkage and fewer white matter lesions, both of which can be signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

And while social and intellectual activities can be beneficial in preventing Alzheimer’s disease, the study found that social and intellectual engagement weren’t as helpful to the brain as physical exercise. The types of physical exercise most beneficial to the brain are still being studied, though information presented at the 2012 Alzheimer’s Association’s International Conference suggested that strength training is perhaps the most effective form of exercise.

See you in the funny papers ... Barney Google

A

merican cartoonist William Morgan “Billy” DeBeck (1890 - 1942) hit the jackpot with his creation, the comic strip “Barney Google.” However, the accolades did not come for Surveyor the character Columnist Barney Google alone.

The fact is Barney first appeared in a strip on the sports pages in June 1919.

The strip had the unwieldy title “Take Barney Google, Rudy F’rinstance.”

Hemmann DeBeck soon realized he had a character he could build a strip around and quickly changed the name to “Barney Google.”

DeBeck’s style of drawing was described as somewhat “scratchy.”

His characters had large feet and large, sometimes bulbous, noses.

Barney himself was described by comics historian Bill Blackbeard as a “goggle-eyed, mustached, gloved and top-hatted, bulbous-nosed, cigarchomping shrimp.”

And a “shrimp” he was. Barney was initially shown being about half the height of the other characters in the strip, but he shrank after the first year to the point of being about one third the height of others appearing in the strip.

The diminutive hero, who was relentlessly henpecked, came to be loved by nearly everyone except, of course, his wife, who became weary of his frequent visits to the race track to bet the horses along with his love of poker and prize fights. The formidable Lizzie Google, often referred to by Barney as “the sweet woman,” sued him for divorce. Thereafter she was dropped from the strip almost entirely.

By October 1919 the strip had been picked up by King Features Syndicate and it became a feature across the country.

During mid-July 1922 the strip took a huge jump in popularity. The reason was the introduction into the strip of a “race horse.”

It seems that Barney happened to be standing in front of the Pastime Jockey Club, when an altercation inside sent a patron sailing out a window and landing, more or less, on Barney. To show his gratitude for breaking his fall, and possibly also saving his life, the victim made

Barney a gift; the horse named Spark Plug.

The introduction of Spark Plug seemed harmless enough. DeBeck figured the horse would be involved in a handful of strips and then put out to pasture, so to speak. The horse was depicted as a bow-legged nag well beyond his prime who seldom ran a race. He was usually seen covered with his emblematic patched blanket with his name on either side. Still, the horse had an endearing quality and after only a few strips Spark Plug had become a celebrity.

For instance, soon after acquiring the “gift,” DeBeck began a storyline in which Barney would enter Spark Plug in a race, fully intending to retire the nag after that episode.

However, public interest in the race, and in particular Spark Plug’s preparations for it, grew until it became a full-fledged media event which was eagerly anticipated by millions of newspaper readers. Instead of retiring the horse DeBeck made “Sparky” a permanent cast member. The horse soon became Barney’s “brown eyed baby,” and the name of the strip was changed to “Barney Google and Spark Plug.”

The horse became a merchandising gold mine for DeBeck and has been referred to as the “Snoopy of the 1920s.”

An interesting footnote to this story is that children who liked reading the comic pages were likely to acquire “Sparky” as a nickname. A prominent example of this is “Peanuts” creator Charles M. “Sparky” Schultz, who took so much pleasure in reading the comics pages he was given the nickname by an uncle. It stuck, and Schultz was known by the nickname “Sparky” to his friends.

The decade of the 1920s became the heyday for DeBeck’s strip. Some of the more popular characters of the strip were “Sunshine,” Barney’s black jockey, “Ruby,” an annoying ostrich and a monocle wearing wrestler named “Sully.” Barney also became a member of a secretive hooded fraternity “The Order of the Brotherhood of Billy Goats.” The password for the group was “O-K-M-N-X,” which stood for the breakfast order “OK, ham and eggs.” Barney was elected to the high office of “Exalted Angora” in 1928.

Barney and Spark Plug were mainstays of the comics’ pages for over a decade. Then, in 1934, Barney and Sparky traveled to Hootin’ Holler in the mountainous backwoods country of North Carolina where he happened to meet the mercurial hillbilly moonshiner, Snuffy Smith.

Barney immediately became in-

volved in Snuffy’s affairs. DeBeck apparently realized hillbilly humor was a hot commodity in comic strips of the day, as evidenced

by Al Capps success with his “L’il Abner” strip.

Snuffy, who was also height challenged being the same size as Barney, soon had an even greater impact on the strip than Spark Plug. The strip became evermore concentrated on Hootin’ Holler with Snuffy as the main character, surrounded by fellow mountaineer folks. His last name is pronounced “Smif” by the hill folks.

He is a cantankerous, ornery, shiftless, sawed-off little cuss who lives in a shack, makes “corn likker” in his homebuilt still, and is in constant trouble with the sheriff. He proudly mangles the English language and has a tendency to shoot at anyone he disagrees with, especially “flatlanders” and “revenooers.”

He sports a broad-brimmed felt hat that nearly doubles his height and apparently has just one pair of shabby, poorly patched overalls. He cheats at poker, checkers and steals his neighbor’s chickens.

By the late 1930s Snuffy had become so popular that it was decided to change the name of the strip once again, and “Barney Google and Spark Plug” became “Barney Google and Snuffy Smith.”

Beware of disaster fraud in aftermath of recent floods Special to the Surveyor

United States Attorney John Walsh today urged Colorado residents and businesses to be aware of the potential for fraud in the aftermath of the recent devastating floods.

“Victims and donors alike should use care in deciding who to do business with,” said U.S. Attorney John Walsh.

“Unfortunately there are some who prey on the vulnerable or desperate.

Before giving money to an organization, do your research to ensure it is a legitimate relief agency. Also, before you hire a contractor, do your research to ensure that they are a legitimate, reputable business.”

U.S. Attorney Walsh also noted that scams come in all forms — e-mail, phone calls and mail solicitations. He urges Coloradans to be vigilant and cautious before giving anyone your personal information.

Before making a donation of any kind, consumers should adhere to certain guidelines, including the following: • Do not respond to any unsolicited (spam) incoming e-mails, and do not click on links contained within those messages, as they may contain computer viruses.

• Be skeptical of individuals representing themselves as surviving victims or officials asking for donations via

e-mail or social networking sites.

• Beware of organizations with copycat names similar to but not exactly the same as those of reputable charities.

• Rather than following a purported link to a website, verify the existence and legitimacy of non-profit organizations by utilizing various Internetbased resources.

• Be cautious of e-mails that claim to show pictures of the disaster areas in attached files because the files may contain viruses. Only open attachments from known senders.

• To ensure that contributions are received and used for intended purposes, make donations directly to known organizations rather than relying on others to make the donation on your behalf.

• Do not be pressured into making contributions; reputable charities do not use coercive tactics.

• Be aware of who you are dealing with when providing your personal and financial information. Do not give your personal or financial information to anyone who solicits contributions.

Providing such information may compromise your identity and make you vulnerable to identity theft.

• Avoid cash donations if possible.

Pay by debit or credit card, or write a check directly to the charity. Do not make checks payable to individuals.
