Editors Edition!

Hello!

Ethan here! (he/him)

I hope you all have settled back into the flow of Uni since the Easter holidays and that you’ve all been enjoying the sun and nice weather we’ve been having recently!

With weather like this it’s important to stay safe in the sun, stay hydrated and keep cool and wear weather appropriate clothing (also wear suncream). Take breaks from the sun if needed as well. But also enjoy the weather too, with places such as the rooftop garden and the venue outside seating areas around the Uni to enjoy time outside! As well as places around Wycombe such as the Rye park and Hughenden park.

I know the first few weeks back after a holiday can either be smooth sailing or feel like too much at once, so do remember to reach out to classmates or lecturers and take it at your pace! Personally, my course, Fine Art, has been very enjoyable, with my class having a successful zine fair as well as an art

be sure to check out @artistregeneration on both TikTok and Instagram for updates on future events, fairs and exhibitions!

Remember that the Uni is here to support you in many ways, from counselling and disability and inclusion services to student support and academic advice and facilities such as the Gateway Gym, the library, The Venue and the many food and drink places around the Uni, be sure to take advantage with what the Uni has to offer, especially as we’re in the final push until the end of this academic year.

But most importantly, enjoy yourselves! Whether you’re nearing the end of your first year at Uni or your final year, I hope the rest of term goes well for you all! Have fun at venue events coming up, enjoy your course, and find your crowd of people!

“What is something nice you can say to yourself every day?” POSITIVITY

Saving you money through the Big Deal.

For one student, Vytautas, university was never going to be just about lectures. Since arriving in 2020, they threw themselves into campus life at full speed, building an experience packed with leadership, creativity and unforgettable moments. Now, having graduated, they have come full circle and work for the university, continuing to shape the same community they once joined as a new student.

From the very beginning, they focused on bringing people together. As International Students Officer, they helped create a welcoming environment for students from across the world, organising events like the International Mixer and making sure no one felt like an outsider. That sense of community ran through everything they did.

Their voice quickly became a familiar one in student representation. They attended Union Council, Societies Council and AU Council, and later stepping up as Societies Council Chair, they were at the centre of decisions shaping student life. Whether it was representing their course, attending RepCon or taking on the role of NUS Delegate, they made sure students were not just present, but properly heard.

At the same time, they were building serious leadership experience. Through the Leadership Academy, attending training programmes and one to one mentoring, they developed the confidence to lead from the front. Roles like Gaming Chair and Climbing Chair gave them the chance to turn ideas into action,

while positions such as Esports Welfare Liaison and Volleyball Ambassador showed their focus on supporting others as much as leading them.

But it was not all meetings and responsibility. They made the most of every opportunity university life had to offer. From going to watch Peter Pan, attending Comic Con, taking on escape rooms, pumpkin picking and roller skating, their time was filled with moments that brought people together and made lasting memories.

They also threw themselves into sport and social events, taking part in everything from Climbing Sport For Fun and Volleyball Sport For Fun to Snowsports trips, paintball, go karting and ice skating. Along the way, they built friendships and tried new challenges.

Alongside all of this, they contributed to student media, explored societies from gaming to music, and even connected their interests to future careers through events like Global Game Jam and the Pocket Gamer Conference

This has opened many opportunities for Vytautas, which has come to an impressive £3,115. Proving that getting involved can pay off in more ways than one!!

“Students Union has contributed to my life at BNU. They have made sure that part of my tuition as a student was spent back on my interests in societies, sports, social activities, and skill development. During my undergraduate at BNU I made sure I took everything I ‘paid’ for and this included many activities I would not have done if they were not free otherwise (such as in other universities). By doing all of such activities I have expanded my network within university and met a lot of new people. I believe that Bucks Students’ Union shows the way universities and unions should work - The student has paid a lot of money for their education and they should be able to access things for free, try new things, and be supported in their ideas in and outside of their course.”

Vytautas, 2026

My Update so far

Elections

This year’s elections were honestly amazing! Huge shoutout to all the candidates. The amount of effort, energy, and time you all put in was incredible, and you really got students involved and engaged throughout the whole week. I am also super grateful and genuinely honoured to have been re-elected as your Students’ Union President for 2026/27. A massive thank you to everyone who voted for me, supported me, and believed in me. It really means a lot. I am so excited for what’s coming next, and I cannot wait for us to achieve even more great things together!

Wi-Fi

I have been having ongoing conversations with our external Wi-Fi provider, Wifinity, to improve the overall service for students. Over April, there will be more door-to-door conversations to hear directly from students about their experiences and any issues they are facing. Looking ahead to the summer, Ekahau surveys will also be carried out. These surveys measure Wi-Fi coverage

across all accommodations, basically creating a heat map to show where the signal is strong and where it needs improving, so we can identify and fix any problem areas.

Aylesbury

Consultations with students in Aylesbury have been ongoing, focusing on individual personal circumstances and any adjustments that may be needed. These conversations are really important in making sure every student’s situation is understood and considered. As reassurance, the Students’ Union is putting student mental wellbeing at the centre of this process. We are working to make sure students feel heard, supported, and not left to navigate these changes alone. We will continue to advocate for the right support, clear communication, and appropriate adjustments so that every student feels confident and looked after during this time.

Bursaries

Conversations are still ongoing to explore the possibility of introducing both an international student bursary

and a placement bursary to better students who need it most. The aim is to help ease financial pressures, particularly for those facing additional costs linked to studying and placements. We will continue to push this forward and share updates as soon as there’s any progress.

Car Park

I have been having ongoing conversations about expanding free car parking for students, particularly in Uxbridge, where there is potential to provide around 20 free spaces each day. I have also raised the need for increased provision in High Wycombe due to high demand from students. In addition to this, there is also potential for free parking to be made available at the new campus in Uxbridge. These discussions are still ongoing, and we will continue to push for more accessible and affordable parking options for students.

The Athletic Union Awards 2026 was a brilliant evening and a real reminder of what makes our sporting community so special. It was fantastic to see so many students, staff, clubs, and supporters come together to celebrate the achievements of the past year. The evening recognised not only success in competition, but also the hard work, leadership, commitment, and passion that happens behind the scenes every day.

More than the awards themselves, what stood out most was the atmosphere in the room, a genuine sense of pride, support, and appreciation for one another. It was a chance to reflect on everything we have achieved together and to celebrate the people who make university sport such an important part of campus life. While the awards marked one of the highlights of the year, there is still so much to look forward to as the academic term begins to draw to a close.

Joe Burrell

Vice President Achievement and Belonging

joe.burrell@bnu.ac.uk

@buckssuvpab

We have some fantastic events still to come, including Rounders for RAG and our blood donation initiatives, both of which show how our students continue to make a difference both on and off the field.

On Wednesday 29th April, we also came together for the Rugby Memorial Game for Femi. The support shown throughout the day was incredible, and it was a powerful reflection of the strength of our community. It was more than just a game, it was about remembering, honouring, and standing together.

Moments like these show that the Athletic Union is about much more than sport. It is about connection, support, and creating lasting memories that stay with us long after the final whistle.

As we approach the end of the academic year, there is a huge sense of pride in what we have accomplished so far, and real excitement for what is still ahead.

Thank you to everyone who continues to make this community what it is. The success of the awards evening and the spirit shown in the events around it, is something we can all be proud of.

WEDNESDAY 6 MAY 2026

Union Council, Seize The Day Round-Up and Elected Officers Successes Campaign.

Union Council

On Thursday 23 April, we held our April Union Council. For this Union Council, our theme was Money and Budgeting. We had Dan from the Student Hub to discuss what the Student Hub and the University can offer in supporting you whilst studying, and different things you don’t have to pay for, as a student. We also had a Student Voice Officer, Theo, come and discuss the NHS Low Income Scheme and what that means for students. The Low Income Scheme can help you pay for; NHS prescription charges, dental treatment, sight tests, glasses and contact lenses, wigs and the cost of travelling to receive treatment. Every home student is eligible to apply for The Low Income Scheme. For more information, reach out to theo.richens@bnu.ac.uk.

Our Union Council Chair, Sameer and I also discussed what the Students’ Union offers to support students during the Cost of Living crisis, the Jobshop offer from the Students’ Union and a quiz on what is more expensive! Did you know that as

students you are exempt from paying council tax? We also touched on free transport, including the Campus Link bus and the Sshh bus, and free and cheaper food, including Monday Monthly Meal bags and free meals in High Wycombe, Uxbridge, Aylesbury, and Nottingham, as well as reduced costs from the SU Catering, Help Yourshelf, and Rusty’s Refill. The Students’ Union also had a Jobshop, where we post jobs within the area with good hours and pay. If you would like to learn more about what the Students’ Union can offer to support you during the Cost of Living crisis, reach out to me or come by the office. We were also joined by Tristan, CEO, who discussed with the students who attended about our Strategic Plan. The plan is coming to an end, and therefore the Students’ Union are currently reviewing it. If you have anything you think is important to have in the Strategic Plan, or anything you think should change, please reach out to me or union@bnu.ac.uk. Alternatively, you can come by the office.

Seize The Day Final Roundup

In March, I had my big campaign, ‘Seize The Day’ for Epilepsy Awareness. It was

a very packed week, with events every evening, free sessions for students in the Gateway Gym, and events in High Wycombe, Uxbridge, Aylesbury and Nottingham. I had lots of help from the staff across the University and the Students’ Union, and also from Sports Clubs and Societies.

For this campaign, we also posted a lot on social media. We posted facts, frequently asked questions, and my story with epilepsy. We also posted videos explaining what you can do if someone has a seizure and how to put someone in the recovery position. This information is very important. You can find these posts on Instagram and Facebook, with the videos also posted on YouTube. A massive thank you to everyone who supported the campaign in any way!

Elected Officer Successes Campaign

I have been working with Tash from the representation team on an Elected Officer Successes campaign to make this more visible to students. If you have any ideas or feedback on how we can make this more visible for you, please reach out to me or come by the office.

Busy Busy Busy!

We submitted a proposal for more greenery, and a neuroinclusive space at the Nottingham campus. Thank you for all your feedback and input into this as we look to work with the facilities team to get these spaces up and running. The revamped breastfeeding room is open for those that need to use this space. We’re looking into an end of year event at Aylesbury. I am working with SVO Kerri to gather ideas to plan an event but we need to know what you’re interested in!

Email either to Bethany or kerri.bowen@bnu.ac.uk with your ideas or you can fill out the forms dotted around the campus.

In March, I spoke at the Wonkhe Secret Life of Students Conference. I was invited to speak and share stories and experiences around the pressures students are under when using AI. I addressed: time, cost-of-living, access to support, placements, caring commitments, wordy assignment briefs, commuting, and working/ shift commitments. This was a great opportunity as there is much to learn about AI. The day was filled with learning, questions, and discussions by panel speakers across a variety of aspects on this topic such as assessment, employability, and regulations. I was also able to engage with others about the different student pressures in more depth.

Across the year, we’ve offered a range of activities at Uxbridge and Aylesbury.

Make sure you’ve explored the what’s on page to get involved! Thank you to everyone who has been getting involved in a huge mix of activities! There’s still more to come, including pizza decorating, Bingo and arts and crafts! You can find all the details on the What’s On page.

I continue to address areas of feedback you’ve raised around accessibility, reasonable adjustment plans, technology, and blackboard. Whilst many of these projects are developing, there is progress. If you continue to experience issues, please raise this with us.

Either email

surepresentation@bnu.ac.uk or contact the department directly with as much detail as possible about the issues you are facing.

Make sure to check out the monthly website updates for full and more updates too.

Playing varsity this year was an incredible experience. The support was second to none and having everyone there to cheer us on was a highlight of the day. completing the threepeat made it even more special.

Dan Charlton, Bucks Hockey

This year’s varsity was an incredible experience. As my last one playing before I leave, I couldn’t have asked for a better one to sign off with. This was by far my favourite of the three previously, playing a mixed match with Women’s hockey for the first time. Whilst we initially struggled to learn to play with eachother, we settled in quickly and dominated for the third year in a row. Playing with the Women’s team for the first time was an honour, especially as we train together, sharing the pitch was a great way to end things here. Whilst I’ll miss playing, this was an amazing day, with an incredible atmosphere from the sidelines. (Shoutout to Ben Nixon who was our main cheerleader throughout)

Cally Dellaway, Netball 2s Playing at varsity and having both Netball teams win their games this year was amazing! The atmosphere this created amongst the girls and everyone watching was incredible and getting the overall varsity win made the day that more special!!

RAG Round-up for 2025-26

As this year is coming to an end, so is my 2nd year of being RAG ambassador, so its only right to do a RAG Round-up of the year!

So far for our RAG Charity, Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Service, or known as RASASS, we have raised £5200! An insane number considering the year isn’t over yet!

We had a great start in October with our first RAG Week, were we had dodgeball for RAG, our men’s football allowed themselves to be waxed, and we have our infamous Pie a Rugby Player, along with our Students’ Union Staff members taking on an Inflatable 5K run, and our university club Social Secretaries being slime dunked!

RAG week 2 in January was just as jam packed, with our annual Bucks Mens Rugby Darts 4 Rag, Donut Day, and Drag 4 Rag, but with some new activities such as

UV Volleyball, and Pie a President, which was when Womens Football, Cricket, Men’s Hockey, MT, Rugby, and Netball presidents/chairs where welcomed with whipped cream and shaving foam!

However, the year isn’t over yet, and we still have some upcoming events, such as Women’s Football’s charity match against Holmer Green on the 6th of May, to raise money for Thames Valley Air Ambulance. Men’s Rugby also has a memorial game for their player Femi, this game is on the 29th of April, where the boys will be raising money for LooseHeadz, men’s mental health charity. On the day the boys will be walking 20 miles on the day, to their match against Marlow.

Hopefully we have just as an exciting year to come, so keep an eye out!

- Paddy / Keleigh

RAG Ambassador

Year of Volunteering

This year we have had a fun year filled with many different volunteer opportunities from one can trust to Chiltern Open Air Museum Spooktacular.

We started the year off with planting flowers and vegetables in Rusty’s Retreat into making bug house making. To then travel to Chiltern Rangers to volunteer as scare actors which went very well despite the weather.

The next opportunity we ran was Smile Campaign, where our students went around town with bananas on a Monday morning to hand out bananas for smiles.

We then move to Christmas Volunteer week where we ran many different activities such as calico doll making, anti-anxiety bracelets, going and making Christmas decorations at the Hairoun Day Centre and ending the week with dog toy making.

We then move into Second term where we had Post Pals, anti-anxiety bracelets and Varsity banner making.

There are still some Volunteering opportunities coming up in this final term to look forward to such as our Bournemouth Beach Clean Bonanza on Wednesday 3rd June.

Student Voice Officer Update

Hi Bucks New Uni Students, I am Freya, a student voice officer who works with the Students’ Union to amplify the student voice and to improve the student experience. As a student voice officer, though I work to support all students, I focus on students who identify as women, students with disabilities, students with chronic conditions, and students with mental health conditions.

You may have seen my previous articles published at the beginning of the academic year about awareness events, such as Suicide Prevention Month, Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day, Purple Tuesday, World Sight Day, and Dyslexia Awareness Week. Awareness is something I feel passionate about, as the more understanding we have, the more change we can cause to amplify inclusivity, not just in University and the workplace, but also in general life.

Currently, I am working with elected officers and the president of the Student Union to improve the quality of the North Wing Lift, as it has come to our attention how frequently it has complications, and we know that when the lift is out of order, it adds more agro to all students as well as makes it difficult for students with disabilities or injuries to attend lectures. We are working closely with the university to find solutions to prevent further

disruptions from the North Wing Lift, and we would like to thank you for your patience during this time. I am also working with student representatives and the university’s representation team to ensure all lectures are captured and accessible to any student who cannot attend class, so there are no gaps in learning. We are also working to find solutions that make classrooms more accessible for wheelchair users and disabled students, such as possibly installing a door-opening button.

Other projects I am working on include assessing the possibility of increasing the number of electrical sockets in the lecture halls, particularly in the north wing rooms and the Owen lecture theatres. The goal is to ensure that all students have access to charging ports for their devices, preventing them from running out of battery during lectures. Additionally, this initiative aims to enhance student safety by providing adequate charging spaces.

I would like to highlight that free parking is available for students at the High Wycombe campus. We are dedicated to ensuring that as many students as possible can access this parking, despite the limited spaces in the car park.

Our team is continuously working to enhance the student experience and make commuting to campus easier for those who need it.

Thank you again for your time reading this and for contributing to the student voice!

If you ever have any queries, questions, or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me at freya.carson@bnu.ac.uk or the representation team at surespresentation@bnu.ac.uk.

World Mental Health Day

The Union Council meeting on 23 April 2026 brought together officers, trustees, student reps and staff for an evening focused on updates, discussion and planning. Chair Sameer Pathan opened the session by welcoming attendees, introducing the newly elected officers and setting out the agenda, with members expressing appreciation for the support received during election campaigns.

A major item was the University’s proposed rebrand. The marketing team presented “Rise up” as a potential new strapline, linking it to the Varsity theme used earlier in the year. Students shared mixed reactions: some found it simple and versatile, while others questioned its connection to the University’s identity or felt it resembled commercial slogans. A few suggested drawing more on institutional history. Overall, the room rated the idea around 7/10, emphasising the need for authenticity and student involvement.

Officer updates covered bursary progress, Wi-Fi improvements, parking arrangements at Uxbridge, Eden access discussions, and the success of Seize the Day activities. Upcoming events included What’s Your Blood Type, Guide Dogs, Rounders 4 RAG and the July Blood Donation Bank. Additional updates celebrated new community and quiet spaces, encouraged reporting issues with MyBNU, and confirmed approval for extra student uniforms.

The Trustee Board reported strong financial performance, updated governance policies, and the election of new student trustees. Bucks will host the Southern Students’ Unions Conference, and celebrations marked a Varsity “three peat” and a tenth consecutive WhatUni shortlist.

CEO Tristan Tipping outlined the development of the new Strategic Plan, shaped by student and stakeholder feedback, with no objections raised to the proposed priorities. Guest speakers highlighted financial support, the NHS Low Income Scheme and cost of living initiatives.

Before closing, Sarah Jackson, Head of People and Development addressed concerns about missed free meals and other student queries. Sameer Pathan acknowledged the contributions of staff and officers who ensured the meeting ran smoothly. Key upcoming dates were shared, and the meeting concluded with confirmation that the next Union Council will be held on 19 May 2026 at 5pm.

Charge it Up Campaign Update

Dear Bucks Students,

For over the past year, I have worked closely with the student union to improve the number of places we have to charge our devices, because it is not only important that we have fully charged devices for our laptops and tablets for lectures and study periods, but it is also very important for our safety around and outside campus.

I noticed before that in some lecture rooms and halls there was a lack of charging sockets or extension leads, so I came up with the ‘Charge it Up’ campaign and worked with multiple people across the SU to see what could be done to address the issue. As you may have seen across campuses, more sockets have been added to classrooms and community spaces. You may have also seen that the university has installed power bank towers in Uxbridge and High Wycombe.

If not, the charging power banks can be found in the locations below.

- Uxbridge: ground floor just outside the lifts

- High Wycombe: Gateway building, ground floor between security and the entrance to GLT

The University has created an app so that throughout the day you can hire a power bank to charge your phones and your tablets to ensure you can travel across and outside the campuses as safely as possible, and the increased amount of sockets installed in the buildings is to make sure you can complete lectures without being disrupted due to your devices dying. However, please do not use the power bank to charge your laptop.

I hope that this campaign will improve your studies and safety across campus, as that was its main aim.

Thank you to everyone who worked with me on this campaign, making my idea to further develop the university’s dedication to students a reality.

The Brunel Engine Shed

We have partnered with Buckinghamshire New University to run the newly renovated Brunel Engine Shed, which is located opposite the High Wycombe train station. Come along and grab a Costa coffee and some food in this beautiful building or check out the current art exhibition we have on display.

Open 7am-4pm Monday - Friday.

We will also be running various events and conferences, and it is available to hire out.

We can’t wait to welcome you here.

Strong finish to a great season for badminton

The badminton team have had one of their best seasons in recent years with high league finishes for the men’s and women’s team, a massive win at varsity and plans for next year coming into fruition.

Both men’s and women’s teams had an exceptional season with some amazing performances throughout the year leading to a third place finish for the men and a second place finish for the women in their first ever season playing together which is a remarkable achievement.

The highlight of the season was on the biggest stage of the year at varsity. Both teams came together to play in a mixed event that secured the first point of the day with a dominant 6-3 win over our rivals Roehampton. The support from all our other teams was incredible and the result reflects the hard work put in across the entire season. Next year’s committee has been selected, with some current players carrying the responsibilities into next season where we hope to build on the success of this year.

A very successful bake sale raised some funds for the team and the club is on the brink of gold accreditation- an achievement we are incredibly proud of as it is the first time in many years that badminton has been accredited. Some of our members have been nominated for awards at the upcoming AU dinner: Rich Collins for Coach of the year, Johannes Roche for Bucks spirit of sport and Alfie Tentner for Sportsman of the year, which is an incredible achievement, and we wish all nominees the best of luck.

Overall, a notable season with many firsts for badminton, which we are very proud of and hope to carry into next season with a fresh new committee.
