EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 2

BUCKS STUDENTS’ UNION STRATEGIC PLAN 2026-29

Bucks Students’ Union’s strategic plan for 2026-2029 sets out a clear and ambitious commitment to making life better for students at Bucks. Building on a strong track record of growth, impact and student satisfaction, this plan reaffirms the Union’s role as a valuesdriven charity that is inspiring, tenacious and dynamic in everything it does. At its heart is a vision of a university experience where every student feels they belong, where opportunity is never defeated by circumstance, and where the Union is a trusted, credible and effective champion for all students at Bucks New University. Over the next three years, the Union will focus on three strategic priorities that reflect what students have said matters most to them. We will amplify the student voice by strengthening representation, improving feedback systems, and ensuring students can clearly see the impact of their views on university decision-making. We will help our members navigate university life by tackling the wider challenges that shape the student experience, including wellbeing, loneliness, financial pressure,

belonging and access to support. We will also support student success and life beyond Bucks by expanding co-curricular development, employability opportunities, leadership pathways and alumni engagement, ensuring students leave Bucks with the skills, confidence and connections to thrive in their future lives and careers. Underpinning these priorities is a firm commitment to building a sustainable Union that is resilient, well governed and ready to meet the changing needs of students and the higher education sector. This means investing in our people, strengthening governance and compliance, using data and insight more effectively, diversifying income and continuously improving the way we work. Together, these commitments will ensure Bucks Students’ Union remains relevant, ambitious and impactful delivering meaningful change, creating transformative opportunities and continuing to place students at the centre of everything we do.

INTRODUCTION

Tristan Tipping

Chief Executive Officer, Bucks Students’ Union

Welcome to the new strategic vision for Bucks Students’ Union. This plan outlines our goals and priorities for the coming years, while reflecting our commitment to operating as a values-driven charity that puts members first. It’s about maintaining our momentum, building on the solid foundations we’ve laid together, and steering Bucks Students’ Union toward an even brighter future. As we approach our 50th anniversary, this isn’t about a revolutionary new direction, or new paths taking us away from a clear mission that served the membership so well over recent years, it is about unlocking exciting new opportunities, setting refreshed, relevant priorities, and making sure we stay in tune with our members. Everything you read throughout this document is shaped by our members and stakeholders. We’ve listened closely to the students of Bucks New University, colleagues and partners, building our goals around real data and direct feedback. We want to make sure the Union stays deeply relevant to our incredibly diverse campus communities. By remaining abreast of sector changes, emerging trends and social and cultural developments, we will remain agile, push boundaries, and confidently make the most of new opportunities the moment they arise. In today’s divisive political climate and amidst a cost-of-living crisis that continues to impact our membership, it has never been a more important time for this Students’ Union to focus and double down on our commitment to inclusivity, diversity, accessibility and supporting those in our communities who need it most. We are duty bound to do whatever we can to ensure everyone who crosses our thresholds can make the best of the transformational opportunity university can provide. We must continue to role model our values and relentlessly champion the cause of our members.

Over the years, we’ve built a unique character and an authentic recognisable brand. People know exactly what Bucks Students’ Union stands for: we are inspiring, tenacious, and dynamic. We are committed to these ways of working, remaining transparent, ethical, and fun, while constantly stretching ourselves to exceed our own high standards. To make these simple but impactful commitments a reality, we are focusing heavily on building a truly sustainable Union. That means managing our resources smartly, prioritising effectively and finding innovative new funding streams so we can reinvest every penny back into the student experience. We are also dedicated to preparing our graduates for life after university by investing in a firstrate, supportive, developmental and enriching experience for our members, student leaders and staff. We are heading into the next phase of our organisation’s development with huge enthusiasm and a driven, talented team who are staunchly committed to delivering sectorleading results. Together, we will continue to be a powerful agent for positive change and a champion for every single student at Bucks, creating a navigable landscape for all and making sure that at Bucks, opportunity is never defeated by circumstance.

BUCKS STUDENTS’ UNION STRATEGIC PLAN 2026-29

Our wide-ranging portfolio of services, from academic representation and member-led campaigns to advice and welfare support, from safe and inclusive social spaces to great value commercial services and student-driven media to exciting volunteer and leadership opportunities are all incredibly important to us but it is perhaps the multi-faceted Big Deal programme, and the principles behind its inception, that gives a valuable insight into who we are as an organisation. A helpful reference to our extensive portfolio of opportunities and support can be found in our Membership Guide.

THE BIG DEAL

The Big Deal is our unique, inclusive package of co-curricular opportunities that is at the heart of our offer to the membership. From a broad array of social opportunities, societies and sports to recreational activities and personal development, alongside wellbeing initiatives, cost-of-living support and rewarded representation schemes. We want a level playing field where, whatever your background or story before coming to Bucks, there are fewer barriers to participation and a place for you in our Union. The Big Deal is always free to access, available to all and underpinned by the following objectives: Fun - To enhance student life, bringing vibrancy to our campuses by creating a diverse and exciting extra and cocurricular experience that compares favourably with our competitors within the sector, making campus a place where our members want to be. Accessibility - To support inclusivity, celebrating our diverse student community by removing barriers to opportunity and ensuring all are considered in our programming.

BUCKS STUDENTS’ UNION STRATEGIC PLAN 2026-29

Belonging - To cultivate a sense of belonging through supporting and promoting a healthy community, active student groups, a wide portfolio of social opportunities and a university environment of which we can all be proud. Learning - To develop and enhance opportunities that support our students’ learning and are complementary to course-based activity. Employability - To develop our learners’ confidence, transferable skills, graduate attributes and general employability through readily accessible, fairly paid employment, personal development programmes and volunteering opportunities. Wellbeing - To enrich our members’ physical and mental wellbeing through a wide-ranging portfolio of support, activity, welfare provision, personal development and social networks. Welcoming - To maintain an easily communicable ‘offer’ that works as both s a statement of intent and welcome for prospective students and as a unique selling point for the institution.

OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH BUCKS In 2025 we established new principles outlining our relationship and ways of working with our parent institution and partner, Bucks New University, which of course outside of our relationship with our members, is the single most important, valuable and productive partnership we could possibly develop.

We believe that these principles of partnership will be mutually beneficial for both organisations and will yield significant rewards for the students of Bucks. An open, supportive and professional relationship with the institution will be hugely influential in the anticipated successes across the period of this strategy. The shared principles of working together are: Members of our student community automatically become members of Bucks Students’ Union when they join Bucks. The Union works hand in hand with the University to achieve common objectives, tackle challenges, and build a positive, thriving environment where learners’ needs and outcomes always come first. The University values the Union’s autonomy and independence, recognising Bucks Students’ Union as the lead representative body for all Bucks learners. We work together to ensure the voices of all learners are encouraged and heard. The University will provide the support, funding and resource needed for the Union to deliver outstanding services, and the Union commits to using those resources impactfully for the benefit of all learners. We will be robust and transparent in reporting on the impact of initiatives and develop structures that build trust, track progress, and unlock new opportunities for collaboration. Our proud partnership benefits Bucks learners by supporting their ambitions and fostering success in their future endeavours and chosen careers.

P3:

STUDENT SUCCESS Supporting student success and life beyond Bucks

The Union will support student success by equipping our members with the skills, opportunities, and confidence they need to thrive during their time at Bucks New University and beyond. Students have told us that success means more than academic achievement alone; it also means feeling prepared for the future, building meaningful experiences, and developing the confidence to pursue their personal and professional ambitions. We recognise that every student’s journey is different. Our role is to create opportunities, provide support, and enable development that helps students achieve success on their own terms. Through a stronger focus on employability, leadership, co-curricular learning, and progression, we will help students build the skills and experiences needed to navigate university and the world beyond with confidence. We will also strengthen the lifelong relationship between students and their Union by creating meaningful opportunities for alumni to remain connected, contribute, and benefit from the Bucks community long after graduation. We will: Further develop a highly valued co-curricular programme Opportunities beyond the classroom play a vital role in shaping students’ confidence, skills, and personal growth. Co-curricular experiences allow students to explore new interests, develop practical skills, and build experiences that complement their academic studies. We will deliver and promote a diverse programme of workshops, taster sessions, skills development activities, and certified courses that align with industry needs and support students to broaden their horizons. Maintain strong networks that prepare our students for life beyond university Strong networks and professional connections are essential in helping students navigate uncertainty and make informed choices about their future. Without access to mentoring, guidance, and opportunities to connect with others, students can feel less prepared for life after graduation. We will create opportunities through initiatives such as STRIVE, mentoring schemes, and co-curricular activities that broaden horizons, strengthen professional networks, and

16

BUCKS STUDENTS’ UNION STRATEGIC PLAN 2026-29

support students to pursue their chosen pathways. To do this we will work collaboratively with academic teams, University careers services, employers, alumni and students to shape relevant opportunities, strengthen industry connections and ensure our offer responds to evolving student and employer needs. Provide support for and promote part-time work opportunities For many students, balancing finances alongside study is a significant challenge, and access to flexible, meaningful work can make a substantial difference to both financial resilience and employability. Part-time work also provides valuable real-world experience. We will expand and promote flexible, fairly paid opportunities through initiatives such as JobShop, internships, ambassador schemes, and Students’ Union employment. Enable our members to build the knowledge, confidence, skills and experiences they need to achieve their personal and professional goals Students often gain valuable skills and experiences throughout university but can struggle to recognise, evidence, and articulate their value. Structured development opportunities can help students

better understand their strengths and prepare for future progression. We will support students through initiatives such as the Bucks Award and Leadership Academy, helping them to reflect on, capture, and communicate their development. Enhance the employability of our membership by providing opportunities that equip students to succeed in the world of work and to follow the pathways that matter most to them Entering the world of work can feel daunting, particularly in an increasingly competitive graduate market. Students need access to practical opportunities that build confidence, develop transferable skills, and prepare them for professional environments. We will expand volunteering, leadership, placement, and paid opportunities through the Students’ Union, including through the JobShop, internships, placements and ambassador roles, ensuring students can access meaningful experiences that improve their graduate outcomes. Identify emerging leaders amongst our diverse membership and help them map a path to success Leadership opportunities can have a transformational impact on confidence, ambition, and future success, but students often need support to recognise their leadership potential and maximise these experiences. We will invest in students from across the full diversity of our members, helping them to undertake paid and voluntary leadership roles that provide both transferable and rolespecific development opportunities that strengthen their capability and help them map their path to success.

Champion student successes to enhance the reputation and value of our members Students make a significant contribution to the University, local communities, workplaces, and wider society, yet these achievements are not always recognised beyond campus. Celebrate and promote the achievements, talents, and contributions of our diverse membership through awards, recognition schemes, case studies, community partnerships, and targeted communications. By sharing positive stories and showcasing student success, we will strengthen community relationships, challenge stereotypes, and enhance the reputation and value of our members. Developing our Alumni network Graduation should not mark the end of a student’s relationship with their Union or the Bucks community so all students will be automatically registered into the network. Alumni networks provide valuable opportunities for connection, mentoring, and shared learning that can benefit both graduates and current students. We will continue to work with the University to grow and strengthen the BNU Alumni Network, creating opportunities for alumni to remain connected, contribute their expertise, and support future generations of Bucks students. Our dedicated alumni website and membership platform will be used as the primary communication channel, alongside our social media channels to drive awareness and engagement, including latest news, alumni panel discussions and events and mentoring and knowledge sharing opportunities.

What will we recognise as positive achievements in this area of our work? Increased participation in skills development and recognised employability initiatives, with the Bucks Award and Leadership Academy becoming established and valued parts of the student experience. Securing the resources to support at least 100 students through the Leadership Academy each academic year and demonstrating the positive impact participation has on student confidence. Increased numbers of students accessing flexible paid work opportunities that complement their studies and contribute positively to their financial wellbeing. Students undertaking paid work through the Students’ Union completing transferable and role-specific development opportunities that enhance their employability. Feedback evidencing increased confidence, stronger skills and greater readiness for employment, further study, entrepreneurship and leadership.

BUCKS STUDENTS’ UNION STRATEGIC PLAN 2026-29

Strong engagement from course teams, employers, alumni and external partners in creating meaningful placement, development and recruitment opportunities, with employers recognising our members as highly valued employees. Greater recognition and advocacy for the Bucks Award across the University community. We will establish links between engagement and participation in Students’ Union opportunities and programmes and positive graduate outcomes, with students more readily progressing into employment, further study, entrepreneurship and leadership roles, equipped with the skills, confidence and experiences needed to thrive beyond university. Positive feedback from community partners, employers, and stakeholders regarding the contribution and impact of Bucks students. Substantial growth in the size and impact of the BNU Alumni Network for former and current students.

The Union will build a sustainable future by strengthening the core foundations that enable us to deliver for students now and in the years ahead. Students need a Union that is resilient, well-governed, financially secure, and able to adapt to a changing higher education environment. By focusing on our organisational strength, we will ensure Bucks Students’ Union remains effective, relevant, dynamic and impactful for all members. This means investing in our people, improving the way we work, diversifying our income, and using data and insight to make informed decisions. By doing so, we will protect and enhance our ability to support students and deliver on our charitable objectives. We will: Strengthen governance and ensure compliance

Invest in our people and organisational planning

Strong governance is essential to the long-term success of the Union. We will support robust democratic structures, effective trustee oversight, and transparent studentled decision-making to ensure we remain accountable, ethical, and focused on our members’ interests. Alongside this, we will maintain the highest standards of compliance with statutory requirements, charity law, and health and safety regulations.

Our staff, volunteers, and student leaders are central to our success. We will create an inclusive and supportive culture that prioritises professional development, wellbeing, and engagement. We will also strengthen our strategic planning and risk management processes to ensure we are prepared for future challenges and able to operate with confidence and resilience. Use data and insight to stay relevant to our members To remain responsive to student needs, we must understand their experiences and priorities. We will improve how we collect, analyse, and use data, feedback, and participation trends to ensure our campaigns, services, and support continue to reflect what matters most to our members. Diversify our income and strengthen financial resilience To secure our long-term sustainability, we will reduce reliance on traditional funding by exploring new commercial opportunities, partnerships, sponsorships, and external grants. By broadening our income streams, we will increase our financial resilience and reinvest more into enhancing the student experience.

18

BUCKS STUDENTS’ UNION STRATEGIC PLAN 2026-29

Improve the way we use our resources We will audit, review and refine our systems, structures, and processes to ensure we are working as efficiently and effectively as possible. By making better use of our spaces, budgets, and staff time, we will maximise the value we create for students and reduce unnecessary waste and inefficiency. Benchmark against the sector and drive innovation We will continuously learn from best practice across the students’ union sector, measuring ourselves against leading organisations and adopting innovative approaches to improve our services, operations, and impact. UNDERPINNING AND ENABLING STRATEGIES COMMUNICATIONS AND INSIGHT STRATEGY 20

This enabling strategy focuses on how we connect, engage and communicate with our members, stakeholders, partners and wider community in a clear, impactful and meaningful way. We will use data-led insight and authentic branding to dynamically engage our membership, influence the institution for positive change, and champion our value to the wider community—making life better for students at Bucks. How will we do this: Promote and strengthen our brand

BUCKS STUDENTS’ UNION STRATEGIC PLAN 2026-29

Continue to grow our brand: Under the most recent rebrand, we will continue to embed this brand across everything we do and ensure that it sets us apart from the University. Tone of voice: Continue to consider our tone of voice to ensure that we produce compelling and authentic messaging to our membership. Be clear and consistent: Ensure our communications are clear, concise and consistent, strengthening understanding, engagement and trust across our membership and wider stakeholders.

Data-driven engagement Data-driven audience segmentation: Map and categorise our membership using demographic data, campus location, and involvement levels to deliver personalised, relevant communications that directly address the distinct needs of different student groups. BI and data dashboards: Develop our business intelligence and create engagement dashboards, enabling staff to manipulate data to make timely decisions, build compelling arguments and plan for success. Evidence-based institutional lobbying: Utilise robust student survey research and focus group data to build compelling, undeniable cases for change, successfully influencing university decision-makers on critical student issues.

Broaden our communications reach

How will we measure success?

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL ENTERPRISE STRATEGY

We will drive sustainable growth in our organisation’s income beyond our core grant funding, enabling us to further invest in services, facilities and departmental development for the benefit of our members, whilst ensuring the charity’s long-term financial viability. How we will do this:

How will we measure success?

Identifying and developing new income streams and diversifying our activity

A greater level of our turnover (35% to 40% by 2029) will be driven by social enterprise or alternative funding sources.

Driving growth in our social enterprises, connecting with new audiences, and cultivating collaborative partnerships

Sustainable, valuable partnerships will be built with organisations who support our development in demonstrable ways.

Developing a fundraising function to explore and win third stream funding for new and existing projects to our members’ benefit. Investing organisational time and resource in our existing trading services to ensure we offer high value whilst consistently delivering exceptional experiences for our members. Building robust systems that track each trading operation’s key performance indicators and ensuring our teams are properly equipped and supported to manage our operations in a targetdriven, efficient and customerfocused fashion.

A rich, varied and regular programme of high quality community events and public-facing activity will be established to enhance campus vibrancy, provide valuable new sources of income for our trading departments and create more opportunities for our members A sophisticated series of challenging but realistic KPIs are set, bespoke for each operation or outlet, are met or exceeded on a regular basis. Managers can demonstrate a thorough understanding of their relevance and impact, feeling able to take the necessary actions to keep the business on track. As a result of our growth in this area, more roles and hours of meaningful paid work and student development opportunities are created within our Union-run services.

Full promotional plans will be published for each outlet, operation and venture.
