A MESSAGE FROM YOUR ELECTED OFFICERS

It’s been amazing seeing the campus come back to life again! Whether you’re a returning student or just starting your journey here at Bucks, I hope you’re settling in, making new mates, and feeling at home. There’s such a good vibe around campus right now - sports clubs are back in action, societies are growing fast, and there’s something going on every week. It’s been brilliant seeing so many of you getting involved and throwing yourselves into uni life already.

A massive shoutout to everyone who took part in RAG Weektogether, you raised an incredible £2,190 for charity! That’s an amazing achievement and just shows how strong our Bucks community is when we come together for a good cause. We also want to say a huge well done to everyone who volunteered over Halloween. From the Scare Maze to the Chiltern Open Air Museum, you all absolutely smashed it! It was such a great showcase of the acting, makeup, and costume design talent we have here at Bucks - seriously impressive stuff.

On a personal note, Joe is in full swing of his Movember challengerunning 5K every day throughout November and attempting (keyword: attempting) to grow a moustache along the way! It’s all to raise awareness and funds for men’s mental health, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. It’s a cause that means a lot to him, and he’s really looking forward to seeing more moustaches popping up around campus this month too!

Keep an eye on the Students’ Union socials for updates, events, and ways to get involved - and remember, whether you’re here to study, play, create, or just find your people, there’s always something for you at Bucks. See you around campus - and if you spot Joe running or rocking his questionable moustache, make sure to give him a wave!

Hello! I’m Ethan (He/Him)

To those who have just joined the uni, welcome! And hello to everyone who is returning!

I am Ethan, the editor of The Bucks Student newspaper. I’m a second year student who studies Fine Art (which has a lot more writing to it than you’d think) so like many of you I am also learning how to balance the workload, and if you haven’t figured that out yet, don’t stress! You will get used to it.

I spent my first year in dorms, so to all those away from home for the first time, it can be a strange feeling but make the most of it! You can meet a lot of new people outside of your course that you otherwise maybe wouldn’t have talked to.

And if you feel like you’re struggling, do reach out and talk to someone, but also remember to be proud of yourself with how far you’ve come!

Ethan Musgreaves Student Editor

And even if you’re feeling overwhelmed or nervous you’re not alone in feeling like that, even in my second year I’m still getting used to it.

No matter what your course is, remember there’s always support, from financial support to mental health and wellbeing, and many others.

Be sure to take advantage of what the University has to offer, especially events at the venue and the many societies there are, but also the facilities like the library (which is open 24/7 for those who prefer a midnight study session).

Overall, I hope everyone has had an amazing first term back so far and that you’ve settled in well!

The Bucks Student newspaper can also include your own submissions too! From illustrations, course-based announcements, your own thoughts and articles, anything you would like to show in the paper!

Black History Month 2025: A Celebration of Culture, Legacy, and Inspiration

This year’s Black History Month at Bucks was an incredible success — a vibrant celebration filled with energy, reflection, and inspiration. Through a range of training and development activities, students engaged in meaningful conversations and learned about the importance of Black history, culture, and achievement.

One of the standout highlights was the Strive Festival, which featured an exciting lineup of guests, including Shaunagh Brown and several inspiring BNU alumni who shared their journeys, challenges, and successes. Their stories encouraged students to aim higher and continue striving for excellence in all areas of life.

The celebrations reached an unforgettable peak when Fuse ODG joined us for a special Black History Month event. The evening was filled with incredible energy, music, and unity — truly capturing the spirit of the month. The atmosphere was electric, reminding everyone of the power of community and culture.

As Black History Month comes to a close, we’re already looking ahead to our next campaigns. Movember is just around the corner, and we have plenty of exciting activities planned to raise awareness and get everyone involved.

Stay tuned for more news, events, and opportunities to take part — let’s keep the momentum going!

Great to See Our Bucks Students’ Union Team in Nottingham!

It was fantastic to catch up in person with our incredible Bucks Students’ Union staff members, Zey and Chandrika, up in Nottingham! Both have been working tirelessly to support our students, ensuring their needs are met and helping to find effective solutions to any challenges they face.

Their passion, energy, and commitment to improving the student experience are truly inspiring — their enthusiasm is absolutely through the roof! Whether it’s providing guidance, organising events, or being there for students who need a helping hand, Zey and Chandrika are making a real difference on the ground.

If you want to stay up to date with what’s happening in Nottingham, make sure to follow our new Instagram page @buckssunottingham or visit our website for all the latest news and updates: bucksstudentsunion.org/union/nottingham

We’re so proud of the amazing work our Nottingham team is doing — keep up the fantastic work, Zey and Chandrika!

Inflatable 5k, Movember and Diwali/Tihar.

A busy Month of celebrations, running, running and more running!

It’s been an action-packed few weeks here and I’m excited to share what’s been happening — and what’s still to come!

First off, Movember is in full swing! I’ll be taking on the challenge of growing a (hopefully respectable) moustache this month while running 5k every day to raise awareness for men’s mental health. I will be posting the donation link on my Instagram and posters around university, so if you are able to, any donations would be greatly appreciated!

Keep an eye on my socials for updates, photos, and probably a few questionable moustache moments along the way!

We also hosted an incredible Diwali and Tihar celebration, in collaboration with our amazing Indian Society and Nepalese Society. Over 250 students attended, coming together to celebrate culture, community, and light over darkness — it was a vibrant evening full of colour, food, music, and laughter.

Coming up next, don’t miss Buckin’ Buzzin’, happening on Monday 1 December from 9am–5pm. You can sign up for free haircuts, and while donations are welcome, all proceeds will go directly to Movember in support of men’s mental health. It’s a great way to look sharp while supporting an important cause.

I’m also excited to announce the launch of “Joe Tries” — a new series where I’ll be trying out different societies, sports, and activities around Bucks! If your group wants to get involved, send me an email or drop by the Students’ Union office — I’d love to feature you.

Finally, a massive shoutout to the Students’ Union team who recently completed the Inflatable 5k for charity. It was an amazing day full of energy, teamwork, and plenty of laughs — all for a brilliant cause.

Halloween and RAG

Thank you to everyone who donated or took part in RAG! I hope you had a Spooky Halloween.

The first RAG Week was a success! I support whilst you Pie Rugby players, Soak Granny’s, try your luck at the Human Fruit Machine, Wax a Footballer, and so much more! I recommend taking part in any, it’s a lot of fun! A lot of you got involved, which was lovely to see, and we raised an amazing amount of money!

I helped facilitate the Human Fruit Machine, and most of you won! It was great to see so many of you get involved. I got to speak to new students, which is always a plus!

Some of the team here at Bucks Students’ Union took part in a 5k Inflatable Fun Run! It was so great to see the team take part. We had a lot of fun and were able to raise a lot of money for our RAG Charity. Check out the video we made documenting it!

Halloween

I hope everyone enjoyed their Halloween!

I joined a group of students at the Chiltern Open Air Museum for their Scare Walk.

It’s always great to take time to be with students and do something fun! The Chiltern Open Air Museum put on a great event, and we got plenty of scares! (And more from adults then children!)

I then did scare acting at The Venue for their scare maze at the Dollhouse of Horror.

Did you see me?

Uxbridge Freshers’ Fair 2025

On Monday 3rd November we ran a Fresher’s Fair style event at the Uxbridge Campus.

This event was a huge success! There hasn’t been a fair at the campus in many years and acting on student feedback – we brought it back! With stall holders from Union departments, University services, externals from placements trusts, local gyms, and shops, as well as clubs and societies.

This event was incredibly well attended. We were able to give out goodie bags to the first 40 people in the room as well as provide our Uxbridge special newsletter providing all updates on the changes, updates, and plans for the campus.

We heard comments from students at the “Meet Ya Sabbs” stall about the work we are doing as well as hearing about any issues you might have, as well as hearing about your proposed solution to these as well.

A few feedback remarks included “You’re doing a great job”, “it’s great to have a system to voice this”, “How can we action this?” These conversations are greatly beneficial and ensure that we are able to close the feedback loop and keep you updated and have these discussions about your student experience.

Thank you to everyone who attended the fair, took part or hosted a stall. If you wanted any more information about any of our stall holders from this event – please let us know and we can share this.

There is much to come forward this year and lots being actioned. We always want to hear your feedback so please keep sharing this.

We are here to help make your experience the best it can be.

Bucks students save with the BIG DEAL!

University life isn’t just about lectures and late-night study sessions, it’s also about getting involved! Thanks to the BIG DEAL, students are making the most of their time here without breaking the bank. We have a wide variety of co-curricular activities and representation for all students to join: Recreational Activities, Skills, Volunteering, Sport for fun, Competitive sport, Student Rep, Student Voice Officers, Student staff, College officers.

Take John, for example. Since becoming a student here, he’s taken advantaged of all the great co-curricular activities we have such as: Visiting an Alpaca farm and playing Rugby to being a Freshers Helper and joining the Leadership Academy. We have tracked John’s engagement with the SU and have found that he took part in more than 45! All these incredible experiences have cost him nothing extra, saving him around £1,750 in total!

That’s a huge saving compared to students at other universities, where you often have to pay to join sports teams, clubs, or even take part in a simple trip to the Zoo. We have found that this can stop students from taking part, as the cost of living is rising and being a student can make this even harder.

The BIG DEAL proves that getting involved doesn’t have to come with a price tag, it’s all part of the experience!

“It’s

honestly incredible how much I’ve saved. The BIG DEAL has made it possible for me to join clubs, go on trips, and meet new people without worrying about money. It’s taken a lot of pressure off, and I definitely would not have experienced this at a different university. It made my time here very enjoyable; I can’t recommend it enough.”

SMILE with Fairtrade

SMILE with Fairtrade

On a cold rainy day in November students braved the weather to make the community of High Wycombe SMILE. Students headed to the train station and bus station to catch commuters on their way to work and school to hand out Fairtrade bananas and hopefully get a SMILE from them.

402 SMILES were counted from the morning.

BUT…….

Did you know Fairtrade isn’t just about Bananas and coffee?

1. 50% of Fairtrade is co-owned by farmers and workers.

2. Fairtrade mainly works with small-scale farmers.

3. There are rigorous standards which protect workers and the environment

4. Fairtrade products are certified by FLOCERT which is an independent company.

5. Most of the products cannot be grown In the UK.

6. Some smartphones have Fairtrade gold in them.

7. Fairtrade is global, it has spread across all continents.

8. Fairtrade is fighting for a living wage for cocoa farmers.

(Dr Pooky Knightsmith) POSITIVITY

9. Buying Fairtrade products helps to tackle the climate crisis.

“Smiling makes you feel happier and calmer”

10. Garment workers are required to be paid living wages by Fairtrade.

RAG Week 1, what a success!

With the week coming to an end, it was filled with laugher, challenges, mess and charitable giving. Through a packed schedule of creative and hilarious fundraising events, we raised over £2,000 for RSASS, and local charities.

The week kicked off with Men’s Hockey Dribbling Challenge, and a selection of classic Carnival Games, testing their skills and having some nostalgia.

Tuesday drew more of a crowd as many were eager to pie their favourite teammates with Rugby’s Pie a Rugby Player, having shaving foam to the face, all for a good cause. Along side this was the hilarious human fruit machine!

Wednesday brought the competitive spirit more than what it already does with Arm Wrestling with Cricket, alongside this was the sweet treat of Doughnut Day, which offered a much-needed boost.

Thursday was our busiest day with starting the cold morning with the brilliantly chaotic Women’s Hockey and their Soak a Granny. Joint with this was the Guess the movie through emoji’s which left people confused and fascinated. During the evening we had our famous Sport 4 RAG, this year we changed it up for Dodgeball 4 RAG, which left students and staff realising the university might need a dodgeball team!

Friday things got bolder with Wax a Footballer, where members of men’s football endured a little pain for a big gain, we had members wax their arms, legs, and some even lost their eyebrows! Alongside this was a tame Spin Your Luck run by WFC.

As RAG Ambassador I express my gratitude for all the students, staff, and clubs who participated, organised fundraisers, or just donated, as every little helps!

With a fantastic fundraising total and a week full of memorable moments, RAG Week 1, once again proved that when it comes to combining fun and giving, the students at Bucks knows how to deliver. And I cant wait for the next!

Thinking what to do as a fundraiser?

The staff at Bucks Students’ Union boldly (and perhaps foolishly) signed up for the Inflatable 5k.

“How hard can it be?” I thought—right up until I tried to sprint up the first giant inflatable slide like a heroic ninja warrior… and immediately reconsidered all my life choices.

Turns out, you do need at least some level of fitness to bounce your way through this thing. While the actual athletes disappeared into the distance, we gracefully adopted a pace I like to call “strategic strolling.” By that, I mean extremely slow.

With legs on fire and lungs protesting, I had to remind myself why we were doing this, channel my inner warrior, and keep trudging forward.

And then—because the universe has a sense of humour—it started raining. So there we were: slipping up soggy slides, sliding down stuff we were meant to climb, sprinting through inflatable tunnels like confused hamsters, soaking wet and sweating at the same time. Glamorous.

But we sang, we laughed, we wobbled our way to the final inflatable—the biggest slide I’ve ever seen—while the rain poured dramatically like we were in the finale of an action movie.

We made it to the end, were greeted with a massive cheer, a shiny medal, and probably mild hypothermia.

You can check out the chaotic footage here:

Best part? Finding out that all our flailing, sliding, and soggy heroics helped raise a whopping £1,020 for RSASS! Totally worth the leg cramps.

Students set the priorities at first Union Council!

Campaigns, events, and Union Council Chair revealed

The first Union Council meeting of the year took place on Thursday 16 October, welcoming students to S3.01 and online. The session outlined major campaigns and gave students a chance to help shape what the union will focus on this year.

President - Jean Marc Amagoua started his update talking about student safety and transport, highlighting talks with MP Emma Reynolds about free travel for under-22s. He also promoted the Black History Month conference and encouraged students in halls to complete the Wi-Fi survey.

Vice President Achievement and Belonging - Joe Burrell focused on community campaigns. Movember will bring free haircuts and a 5K challenge, while the Rainbow Laces campaign has already received over 80 pledges. RAG Week is also just around the corner.

Vice President Education and Welfare (HW) - Erin Cook shared plans around student safety in the Frogmore area, new awareness campaigns and an upcoming wellness fair on Friday 24 October.

Vice President Education and Welfare (UXB/AYLS) - Bethany Jackson highlighted work on mental health support, campus consistency and academic experience, with a focus on making sure commuting and international students are included.

Students then used a QR code poll to vote on the issues that matter most to them. The top four themes were careers and employability, accommodation, mental health and wellbeing, and money and budgeting, which will set the agenda for Union Council meetings going forward.

There was also a spotlight on the Leadership Academy, which gives students the chance to build skills and confidence. Officers shared how the academy helped them with things like public speaking, time management, and CV building.

Want to join Next Time?

During the first Officer Hot Seat Q&A, students raised topics including activities for international students, circuit laundry problems, how to launch their own campaigns, and the benefits of student jobs versus outside work.

Following the meeting, elections for our 2025-26 Union Council Chair were held.

We are delighted to announce that Sameer Pathan has been elected as Chair for this year.

The next Union Council meeting is set for Thursday 20 November at 5.00pm in S3.01 (High Wycombe) and online, where we will be focusing on mental health and wellbeing.

“When you are out and about today, make a note of five things that make you smile. Vary them as much as you can.”

University life in a nutshell

When it comes to being a university student I manage to balance my university schedule as well as working part time and still manage to make time with both my friends and family, making time for my social life helps with my mental health as I don’t want to constantly be stressed for Uni or work. My work life helps me to be able to make money and keep my experience of the work life on top of learning new things from my course.

During the start of my foundation year, I manage to make many friends, who I’m still friends with to this day. I never really experienced societies however I hope to change that this year.

Budgeting my student life is the most difficult. Most of the time student finance is for just my travel and food, as I commute to Uni. My budget is to spend my student finance on university spendings and then the money I make from work is put away in my savings, which decreases my use of spending too much money on the day-to-day basis.

My course has made me more focused as well as this. I am also very interested in my course as I enjoy learning about new cases. Within my course I have learnt to be more open to meeting people, especially with my assignments as we tend to have a lot of different group projects where there are many different opinions and perspectives on the course and the subject itself which gives me the opportunity to become more open to the challenges it gives.

As a criminal law student, it has been one of the most interesting subjects to learn, from learning about cold cases to learning brand new things and information like the statistics within firms in England and Wales.

It doesn't get better than...

ExhibitonCharity

On the Wednesday 3rd December 2025, students from a range of creative courses will be exhibiting, and selling, artwork to raise money for the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians. The exhibition will take place in the House of Annetta exhibition space (25 Princelet Street, London, E16QH) between 10am and 8.30pm.

The artworks exhibited will explore a variance of themes and aesthetics and students are encouraged to visit. Entrance to the exhibition is free however voluntary donations will be accepted.

The genocide in Palestine is still a major issue, the current political environment still continues to silence Palestine. Any support towards them, especially much needed medical aid is extremely important in these times. This exhibition works to both showcase the many different forms of art as well as bring awareness to the genocide still happening in Palestine.

Medical aid for Palestine provides access to essential medical and health services the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem, and Lebanon, but is also committed to speaking out for Palestine in the UK to ensure Palestinian voices are heard.

They provide many things such as complex medical care, care for women and children and mental health and disability support to Palestine and much more. They also take donations on their website www.map.org.uk if you cannot make it to the exhibition but would still like to support.

This exhibition is also an opportunity to see other students work and support them too as by supporting the exhibition you allow them to get their work recognised which can greatly benefit their future in creative projects.

Life in university accommodation vs private housing

University Accommodation

Private Housing and what they don’t tell you that you need to know

As a student, it is easy to look over the most important things that you need to know about accommodation whether or not you are in private housing or not.

Accommodation provided by the University is a simple process that can be easily assisted with via the accommodation team.

My only advice would be to start looking for private housing as soon as you can and to move in with people you trust and enjoy spending your time with.

If you leave this to the last minute, you will struggle to find a place that is up to your standards and what you are looking for; you should also be careful with this as it is not guaranteed that you will get student accommodation provided by the university as priority is given to the next first years.

Private housing comes along with a lot of little details that you need to be aware of, especially if you are moving into a place that doesn’t include bills with the rent and isn’t specifically catered to students as there are a lot of differences. Here are a few things you should be prepared for when living in private housing:

- Letting the council know that you are exempt from council tax

- Make sure to read the tenancy agreement thoroughly

- Understand how deposits work

- Organise your finances

- Organise mail such as bills and important certificates such as gas and energy performance

- Most importantly, know your rights

If you are unsure about where to start looking, the university provides a service to look for housing with accredited agencies or you can ask the Students’ Union for advice.

From welcome mixers and cultural food nights to day trips exploring local landmarks, the initiative encourages students to make new friends and experience cultures across the globe in a fun, supportive environment.

Many international students have praised the scheme for easing the transition to university life. “It’s been amazing to meet people from different countries and feel included from day one,” said one student. “The events helped me feel confident and part of the community.”

The goal of the International Big Deal is to ensure that every student, no matter where they come from, feels valued and connected. With its continued success, the International Big Deal is proving to be a key part of making Bucks New University a truly global and welcoming campus.

Bucks WFC

I joined the Bucks Womens Football Club last year, my first year in university and in England. I had not ever played football as part of a team before but was more then willing to give it a good go!

I had joined other sports and societies when I came to BNU but football was the only one I kept coming back to, because of the sportsmanship of the team, good leaders and coaches. The team and chairman are very supportive throughout the year allowing us as students to make sure our personal and physical wellbeing are at the forefront.

We take part in multiple volunteering activities throughout the year such as “Freshers’ Fair” and “The SMILES Campaign” coming together as a team to help our community in and outside of the University.

We are an outgoing team having regular socials in Wycombe, going to the pub, fancy dress nights and game nights, also we regularly couple up with other teams in the University to compete against each other.

We get multiple opportunities to play matches home and away all in the lead up to varsity toward the end of the season. We defeated our rivals last year in varsity and there’s every hope we will do it again!

Finally, in what we look forward to all year is our tour where we have the best opportunity to go to Croatia to play and show our football and drinking skills. We have big events all year round to collaborate, grow together and have a great time.
