Bucks Students’ Union puts on a great night out, but we are much more than a bar! From the Advice Centre to free Zumba, tell us how we’ve made your life at university better.
Ethan Musgreaves Student Editor Editors update! Happy new year to everyone and welcome back to Uni! I hope you all had an amazing break and enjoyed the time off! And welcome to all the students joining the Uni this month! Make sure to keep a look out for the refreshers fair event and get all the freebies and join the societies you want! I’m Ethan (he/him), the editor for the student newspaper! Coming back to Uni after Christmas break can be a bit odd. You’re learning a new schedule and getting back into the flow of things that it almost feels like when you first started again. But it’s okay! You’ll get used to it.
In terms of Uni classes, be sure to check your Uni class times as they usually change especially the rooms they are in. I usually find this quite confusing even in my second year at Uni, coming back to a whole different timetable, with new subjects and new assignments, you get used to one timetable and suddenly it changes the next term. But it will get easier and you will get used to it. I hope everyone has a good first term for 2026! And that everyone settles back into the work flow of Uni.
Overall, stay safe with the weather and good luck with your assignments for the term ahead! Make sure to take advantage of the University facilities, such as the library, for your work. Especially with apps such as Adobe that with your Uni email you can get for free as well as many discounts on subscriptions and in restaurants around the local town! Want to get in touch? Get involved! sucommunications@bnu.ac.uk
Remember there are many ways the Uni can help support you, from mental health to financial support. Also make sure to check out the venue page to see upcoming events!
Remember to stay safe too; the start of the year can be very cold and icy. Remember to layer up clothes, keep warm, and stay safe on the roads. Especially when it’s the late evening when the temperature drops after a night out.

December President Update Launch of BNU and SU Principles In early December, we proudly launched the shared BNU and Bucks Students’ Union Principles, which set out how we work together to put students first. Every BNU student is automatically a member of the SU, and these principles reinforce our strong partnership, ensuring student voices are heard, supported, and represented. Together, BNU and the SU are committed to working openly and collaboratively to improve the student experience and support your success.

New Accommodation Visits
SVO Meeting
Your elected Officers recently visited Alexandra House and Thame House, BNU’s new accommodation. We explored the rooms and shared spaces to understand what will soon be available for students. Both sites are modern, well-located, and expected to open very soon. We’ll share more details as soon as applications and timelines are confirmed.
I had a really positive meeting with our Student Voice Officer, Freya. She highlighted important areas for improvement, particularly around accessibility, and showed real determination to make change happen. I’m excited to work alongside her on projects that will strengthen student voice and improve the student experience.
Chanukah Party It was great to take part in the Chanukah celebration, bringing together students, staff, and the wider community. We also had the chance to meet the Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, Elizabeth Helen Curzon, Countess Howe, and BNU alum and Reading FC CEO Joe Jacobson. Events like this show the importance of inclusion, connection, and celebrating diversity at BNU.

New Renters’ Rights for Students (England, from 2026) What BNU students need to know about the Renters’ Rights Bill
1. What’s Changing? The Renters’ Rights Bill (expected to become law in 2026) will overhaul how student renting works in England. The biggest change: no more fixed-term tenancies. • All tenancies will become monthly, “periodic” contracts. • You can leave anytime by giving 2 months’ notice. • Landlords can only ask you to leave using specific “grounds for possession” — no more surprise “no-fault evictions”.
2. Deposits and Upfront Costs • Deposit cap stays the same: max 5 weeks’ rent (Tenant Fees Act 2019). • Advance rent limit: landlords can only take 1 month’s rent upfront. • Your deposit must be protected in one of three official schemes: DPS, MyDeposits, or TDS. You can check or claim back wrongly held deposits via Citizens Advice or Shelter.
If your deposit isn’t protected, you can claim 1–3× its value in court. If your If you drop out or move, you’ll no longer landlord didn’t follow deposit rules be stuck paying rent for the whole Citizens Advice academic year.
3. Rent and Increases • Rent can only increase once per year and only with proper Section 13 notice. • Landlords can’t ask you to bid higher than the advertised price — that’s now banned. • You’ll pay rent monthly, not termly. • Discounts or “cheaper summer rent” will no longer be allowed (to prevent unfair pricing). 7. Extra Support
• Any house with 5 + people from 2 + households = HMO, requiring a council licence. • Check your property’s licence on Buckinghamshire Council’s website. • If one tenant leaves, a joint tenancy can now end for everyone — so communication is key. • Some landlords will switch to individual room contracts to avoid this. Share Your Experience and Ideas for BNU’s Internationalisation Strategy Dear International Students, We invite you to take part in an international student consultation meeting where you can share your experiences, challenges, and ideas to help shape BNU’s Internationalisation Strategy. This open and informal session is an opportunity to ensure international student voices are reflected in future decisions and to help improve academic, social, and practical support for current and future students. After a wellearned break, it’s great to see Bucks coming back to life as students return rested, recharged, and ready for the new term ahead. Whether you spent the break catching up with family and friends, working, or simply taking time to reset, we hope you’re feeling refreshed and motivated as teaching, activities, and events get back underway. We’d also like to extend a huge welcome to our January intake students who are joining Bucks for the first time. Starting university mid-year can feel daunting, but you are now part of a vibrant and supportive community. There are countless opportunities to get involved, meet new people, and make the most of your time here, both academically and socially.

Accommodation Visits, Disability Awareness Month and Student Safety Update Accommodation Visits Back in December, my fellow elected officers and I viewed the new accommodations that the University have been working on. The progress is looking good on Alexandra House and Thame House, as the Accommodation team and their construction workers are busy making these new accommodations possible. I believe the new spaces will be like a new BNU community, but in different accommodations. I’m excited to see these projects finished and students thriving in them! When the accommodations are open, we will share further details.

POSITIVITY “If a window of opportunity appears, don’t pull down the shade.” (Tom Peters)
Disability Awareness Month
Student Safety
Joe and I have been working together to promote Disability Awareness Month in December. We’ve done things a little differently this year, as students were not going to be around for the second half of December. Therefore, there are still two weeks left!
Jimmy and I have been continuing to attend the meeting with Thames Valley Police and the local Council regarding safety on Frogmoor. Following these meetings, I can confirm the bench on Frogmoor has been removed. There has been a noticeable decrease in the street drinkers who used to harass and scare people as they walk through Frogmoor. We understand there is still more to do, and we will continue to attend these meetings to ensure more gets done.
Here’s a recap so far. We started by spotlighting Asthma. We highlighted what asthma is, the common symptoms and triggers, treatments, and what do when you have colds or flus. In the second week, we spotlighted PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). We highlighted what PTSD is, common symptoms and triggers, who it affects, and how it’s treated.
If you still feel unsafe when walking through Frogmoor, Windsor House reception is a safe place for all BNU students. If you let reception/security know you’re feeling unsafe and that you are a BNU student, they will help you.
If you missed them, you can find them on our Instagram pages @bucksstudentsunion and @buckssuvpew_hw. Alternatively, at the end of January, they will be on the website. The remaining disabilities we are highlighting are Fibromyalgia and Autism. 11

And We’re Back! Welcome everyone. Whether you are back from the winter break, back for another year or just joining us and beginning your university journey, welcome! I know the previous year has been tough with lots taking place, changes occurring and lots of feedback gathering, but we’re back and hitting the ground running! If you have seen my previous monthly updates on the website, you will have noticed that I have been involved in various discussions regarding campus facilities, policies, resources, and improvements and whilst many of these areas are still be developed, there is progress! The Aylesbury campus commuter space will be relocating thanks to your feedback. This will equip the space with more resources, and a separate location away from studying. This is due to open in January – keep your eyes peeled!
The Bucks Student
The university is reviewing various policies and want to have more student input, creating policies in collaboration, most recently has been the ‘Assessment and Feedback policy’ with drop-in sessions hosted for students to share their thoughts directly with the staff. The Bucks Student

Lucy Ryan and Chandrika Dutta
It’s time to lead your Students’ Union It’s that time of year again when we dust off the voting booths and ballot boxes and start preparing for the Bucks Students’ Union annual elections. There are loads of leadership positions up for grabs, giving you plenty of chances to get involved, make a difference, and represent your fellow students. But with so many roles on offer, it’s easy to get confused. Don’t worry - we’re here to break it all down for you and explain why these elections matter.
What are the elections for? The elections decide who will fill the four Elected Officer positions for the next academic year, across all campuses at BNU. The Elected Officers are fulltime members of Union staff who lead the direction of the Union and help deliver the high-quality student experience we are so passionate about. These four positions offer the opportunity to direct the work of the Students’ Union, meaning you can implement changes you want to see.
Up for election: • President: the principal officer of the Union and responsible for setting the political direction of the Union and communicating with all stakeholders. • Vice President Education and Welfare (VPEW) is responsible for improving and enhancing the educational experience and welfare of all students. • Vice President Student Affairs and Campus Experience (VPSACE) is responsible for academic representation, student welfare, and campus experience for those studying outside of High Wycombe. • Vice President Achievement and Belonging (VPAB) is responsible for improving the non-academic experience of all students at Bucks, whether that be through sports teams, societies, volunteering or the many other opportunities on offer. 15
Alongside the full-time roles, there are part-time leadership positions that you can hold while continuing your studies. These include the Student Trustee positions – a unique opportunity to help shape the Union’s strategy as part of the Trustee Board. Finally, there are elections for Club and Society Committees. Club and society committee members, such as Chairs, Secretaries, and Treasurers, play key roles in organising and leading their groups.
Why should I nominate myself? Do you think you can help make student life at Bucks better? Can you campaign on students’ behalf to make sure their voice is heard? Can you lead your Students’ Union? If the answer is yes, then you should nominate yourself.
Why are the elections important? The Students’ Union exists to represent you, and that’s why these elections are so vital. You’ll be choosing the people who will lead the Union during the 202627 academic year, so it’s essential to vote for candidates who reflect your priorities and goals. If you don’t vote, you are missing out on making sure your voice is heard, which may impact the overall result of the election. As a group, Bucks students are the largest influencing force for affecting change within the Students’ Union and the University. By voting, you can say that the changes being put in place are due to the contributions of your ideas and voice.
Nominating yourself is easy. Head to the Elections homepage, select the role you’re interested in and log in with your Blackboard details. Bucks students save with the BIG DEAL!
17
University life isn’t just about lectures and late-night study sessions, it’s also about getting involved! Thanks to the BIG DEAL, students are making the most of their time here without breaking the bank. We have a wide variety of co-curricular activities and roles for all students: From Recreational Activities, Skills, Volunteering, Sport for fun, Competitive sport, Student Rep, Student Voice Officers, Student staff and College officers.
That’s a huge saving compared to students at other universities, where you often have to pay to join sports teams, clubs, or even take part in a simple trip to the Zoo. With the current increases in the cost of living, particpating in the fun stuff can be harder... Not at BNU.
Take John, for example. Since becoming a student here, he’s taken advantage of all the great co-curricular activities we have such as: Visiting an Alpaca farm and playing Rugby to being a Freshers Helper and joining the Leadership Academy. We have tracked John’s engagement with the Students’ Union and have found that he took part in more than 45 opportunities! All these incredible experiences have cost him nothing extra, saving him around £1,750 in total!
“It’s honestly incredible how much I’ve saved. The BIG DEAL has made it possible for me to join clubs, go on trips, and meet new people without worrying about money. It’s taken a lot of pressure off, and I definitely would not have experienced this at a different university. It made my time here very enjoyable; I can’t recommend it enough.”
The BIG DEAL proves that getting involved doesn’t have to come with a price tag, it’s all part of the experience!

VARSITY LAUNCH
By Alex Ditchburn
Varsity 2025 Launch Night – Be There! The excitement for Varsity 26 starts here! Join us on Wednesday 21 January from 6-7pm, and head to the Bucks Students’ Union Lounge for the Varsity Launch Night—your official kick-off to the biggest sporting event of the University year. Be the first to watch this year’s brand-new Bucks Varsity hype video, where you may spot a few familiar faces, then get an exclusive first look at the official Varsity T-shirt design that everyone, from supporters, to players will be wearing when we take on Roehampton. We’ll also show last year’s highlight reel. This is your chance to connect with teammates, soak up the atmosphere, and get pumped for what’s coming. Bring your friends, your Bucks pride, and your energy—Varsity is coming, and we’re ready to make history! RISE UP SHOW UP! Varsity is one of Bucks’ most iconic sporting traditions, now in its 12th year. It’s a multi-day competition where we face off against the University of Roehampton across a range of sports. Fixtures kick off on Sunday 8 March with Hockey and Football, before the grand finale on Wednesday 11 March, when most matches take place. Each win earns a point, draws earn half a point, and the university with the most points claims the RoeBuck Trophy. This year, Bucks is hosting—so let’s show Roehampton what true Bucks spirit looks like!
Roebuck Champions Roehampton - 2013 Roehampton - 2014 Roehampton - 2015 Bucks - 2016 Roehampton - 2017 Roehampton (Draw) - 2018 Bucks - 2019 Bucks (Draw) - 2022 Roehampton - 2023 Bucks - 2024 Bucks - 2025
Abbie Inman Varsity means so much to me as a player because it brings together competition, community, and pride in representing our university. From my first impressions, Varsity felt like an incredible opportunity to meet new people, support one another, and be part of something bigger than just your own sport. As someone who plays netball, I love the social side of sport and helping everyone feel welcome and included. As Varsity Captain, Leo and I want to make Varsity more inclusive by creating a real build-up to the event, with fun activities that bring different clubs together. Our goal is to make the university feel more united — like one big family — and create the best possible atmosphere for Varsity this year.
Leo Spinks Varsity means a lot to me as a player and it’s the highlight of the year for me, I remember playing in my first varsity and playing in front of such large crowds filled with my mates was quite the experience. Also watching and supporting my friends is always great. Winning away from home last year was also amazing but this year is the most important one to me because it’s my last varsity and being the football first team captain as well as varsity captain makes this the most important varsity by far.

To date, 8 societies have gone through the start-up process and have become active, holding regular sessions and providing opportunities for you to get involved: Aviation, Design Society, Indian, Mental Wellbeing, Miniatures (Set Design), Occupational Therapy, Tennis and Trial Advocacy. In addition, there are several societies who are in the final steps of setting up with their first sessions planned in near future, so keep an eye out. These societies are: African, Art Society, Defense and Civil Engagement Society, Intelligence, Kingdom Connect and Physiotherapy. For more information on these visit bucksstudentsunion.org/ activities/socs/ If you cannot see a society out of our extensive range that interests you, it is never too late to start one. Find yourself 3 members (including yourself) and get in contact with susocieties@bnu.ac.uk and full support will be given to get you up running.
The Bucks Student
Society Successes From our current societies, a few of these have stood out with their work so far this year and it’s great to showcase these. Starting off with the Paramedic Society, show did a fundraiser, volunteering their time and Wycombe parkrun, educating members of the public in CPR whilst raising money for our RAG Charity (Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Service). On the back of these, they are in communication with local schools to do the same. In addition to this, the society supported and ran simulations and training with Didcot Army Cadets – something they are continuing doing into this term. Our Musical Theatre society have been as active as ever – performing again at the Christmas Lights switch on in High Wycombe, the university staff awards as well as at entertaining residents at Ryeview Manor Care home. They have plans for further performances throughout this term, so be sure to listen out for them.
Societies
Islamic Society have run several events so far this year mainly linked to the charity One Ummah through their week of change campaign which provides education to deprived countries around the world. Their efforts saw them raise close around £1000. Our cultural societies, Indian, Nepalese and Mallus all ran successful events across the first term celebrating different festivals including Onam, Teej, Tihar and Diwali. A high number of students engaged across all events so a fantastic effort from each of these societies for their work in the planning, preparation, and delivery of these. Society Timetable All of our societies are ready to welcome back returning students and welcome any new students joining BNU, so check out the timetable of sessions dotted on posters around campus. If you have any questions regarding societies, please contact susocieties@bnu.ac.uk or message @bucksstudentsactivities on Instagram.

Islamic Society X Week of Change BNU ISoc takes part in a charity initiative to raise funds for Education in deprived countries around the world! This year we were honoured to partner with @oneummahweekofchange a UK-based charity with a 100% donation policy for this year’s charity campaign! Theme: ‘Ilm: Education The aim of this campaign is to uplift the less fortunate through long-term, sustainable change by investing in the most powerful tool we have: Education. The first revelation to our beloved Prophet Muhammad was: “Read in the name of your Lord who created…” (Surah Al-‘Alaq, 96:1). This beautifully highlights the profound importance of learning itself. Something easily taken for granted, we carried out meaningful initiatives to support a impactful cause. This included an auction dinner, a regional hike, bake sales and inspirational speaker events at the local mosque.

The Prophet Muhammad said: “Charity does not decrease wealth, no one forgives another except that Allah increases him in honour, and no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises him in status.” (Sahih Muslim) Education is dignity, empowerment, and the key to breaking cycles of poverty. This is not just about raising funds, but it is about raising hope, opportunity, and potential, one child, one classroom, and one future at a time. This campaign unites communities to make a lasting difference by supporting education, livelihood, and emergency relief initiatives across Gaza, Yemen, Syria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Africa, and beyond, with education as the central focus by: • Keeping children in school • Education support and resources • Teacher training and sponsorship • Building masjids as centres of learning

Best season in years for Bucks badminton!
As the season reaches its halfway point, the university badminton team has plenty to be proud of, with both the men’s and women’s teams showing clear progress and determination. The men’s team have enjoyed a particularly strong campaign so far, winning half of their fixtures. This is one of their best seasons in a few years and reflects the hard work being put in during training. The team have shown consistency across matches, competing strongly even against tough opposition. The women’s team have also had encouraging results, securing a couple of important wins and pushing several other matches to very close finishes. Their performances have demonstrated resilience and proven they are a dominant team despite it being the first women’s team in many years.

A New Chapter for Women’s Basketball at Buckinghamshire New University Buckinghamshire New University is welcoming an exciting new addition to its sporting community with the launch of its Women’s Basketball team. Fresh on the court but already rich in energy and ambition, the team is quickly becoming a space where passion, inclusivity, and teamwork come together. Training takes place every Monday evening from 7pm to 9pm, offering students a chance to unwind, stay active, and be part of something special at the start of the week. One of the defining values of the team is its inclusivity. Players of all skill levels and experience are encouraged to join, from those picking up a basketball for the first time to those with years of competitive play behind them. The focus is not only on performance, but on development, confidence, and enjoyment of the game.
Despite being a newly formed team, the women’s basketball squad has already played several games and shown impressive promise on the court. Strong chemistry has developed quickly, with players supporting one another, communicating effectively, and building trust both during training and in competitive matches. This sense of unity has become one of the team’s greatest strengths and sets a solid foundation for future success. Looking ahead, excitement is building around the prospect of Varsity. The team is highly motivated to continue improving, representing the university with pride, and making their mark in upcoming fixtures. With dedication, enthusiasm, and a shared love for basketball, the future looks bright.
The Buckinghamshire New University Women’s Basketball Team is more than just a sports club. It is a growing community that celebrates inclusivity, teamwork, and ambition, and it invites anyone interested to be part of its journey as it continues to grow and thrive.
“It’s just a game—it is a bunch of people trying to get together to accomplish something that individually you can’t do by yourself.” Geno Auriemma

What we have been up to at
Bucks Netball Netball 1s have enjoyed an outstanding season, finishing top of the league after a series of confident and consistent performances. Winning five of six matches, the team demonstrated strong teamwork, resilience, and attacking flair throughout the season. Victories against tough opposition highlighted the team’s ability to adapt under pressure, while dominant displays showcased their depth and discipline across the court. Although the season included one narrow defeat, the team responded positively and used it as motivation to finish strongly. Overall, it was a hugely successful first half season, reflecting the hard work and commitment and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the season holds. Netball 2s have had a great start to the season, winning half of their games and already achieving the best season in Netball 2s history – and we’re only in term 1. The team has shown strong teamwork and commitment and support for one another including supporting the first team. While there have been some tough losses, these have been valuable learning experiences that have helped the team identify areas for improvement. The Bucks Student
By working together, the players are developing their skills, building on their strengths, and addressing weaknesses. This positive mindset and continued development will hopefully lead to even more success this season. During the previous term, the university netball team actively engaged in both community volunteering and clubled events. In collaboration with the women’s hockey team, members volunteered at One Can Trust, the local food bank, assisting with the organisation and sorting of donated tinned goods for distribution to those in need. The team also supported Remembrance Day by participating in poppy selling in early November, helping to raise significant funds within the local community. In addition, the club hosted a successful fundraiser takeover themed I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here! organised by Social Secretary, Cally Dellaway and Chair, Holly Spittles, with strong attendance and support from other university clubs. Get Involved with
Women’s Hockey Women’s Hockey is always looking for new faces, and there’s never been a better time to get involved as we come back ready for 2026. Whether you’ve played for years or have never picked up a stick before, our club is all about having fun, building confidence, and being part of a welcoming team. We train weekly, with sessions designed to suit all abilities. Training is a mix of skills, drills, and game play, with a strong focus on development, teamwork, and enjoying the sport in a supportive environment. Alongside weekly training, we compete in fixtures throughout the season, giving everyone the opportunity to play competitively if they want to. One of the biggest highlights of our year is Varsity, which is approaching. This is a day we train and prepare for together and take huge pride in to represent BNU. From training sessions and team preparation to the atmosphere on the day itself, Varsity brings everyone together, whether you’re playing on the pitch or supporting from the sidelines.
If sport isn’t your thing, you’re still more than welcome to be part of Women’s Hockey. The club isn’t just about training and matches, we also run plenty of relaxed activities and social nights out throughout the year, making it a great way to meet new people and make friends outside your course or accommodation. Whether it’s a casual get together, a themed social, or a night out with the team, there’s always something going on and everyone is encouraged to come along. We’re also involved in a range of volunteering opportunities, which gives members the chance to give back to the local community, try something new, and represent the club beyond the pitch. If you think Woman’s Hockey is for you, come and join us!
