Bucks SU Pres

Hey everyone, I’m Jean Marc, your Students’ Union President. I studied Sports Business Management at Bucks and was actively involved with the Students' Union throughout my time as a student. From being Club President of Bucks Men's Rugby to taking on a range of leadership roles across the Union, these experiences gave me a real passion for representing students and making a positive difference. I chose to run for a second term as President because I know there's still more, I can achieve for our students. Over the past year, we've made great progress, but I'm determined to build on that work, continue improving the student experience, and make sure every student feel supported, represented, and heard. As President, my role is to be your voice and champion the issues that matter most to you. Working alongside the Students' Union team, I'll continue to advocate for your needs, create opportunities for you to thrive, and ensure your feedback leads to meaningful change. My commitment is to make your time at Bucks the best it can be. Focuses this year:

Who am I when I’m off Duty?

This year showed that listening to students and working together leads to real change. As I begin my second term, I'll continue making sure your voice is at the heart of every decision. My priorities are improving value for money, strengthening student wellbeing and campus safety, and responding quickly and transparently to the issues that matter most to you.

When I'm not on campus, you'll usually find me playing rugby for Marlow RUFC or keeping active at the gym. I also enjoy spending time with friends and unwinding with a good video game.

While these priorities guide my work, I'll continue to adapt to the changing needs of our students and support new projects throughout the year. Keep an eye on my social media for updates and opportunities to get involved.

If you'd like to chat, share an idea, or need support, feel free to pop into my office, email me at jeanmarc.amagoua@bnu.ac.uk, or message me on Instagram @buckssupres. I'm always happy to hear from you!

If you'd like to get in touch, feel free to pop into my office, send me an email, or message me on Instagram. I'm always happy to hear from you.

Hi, I’m Akhil, your Vice President Achievement and Belonging I studied Master’s in International Business Management at Bucks, and I was actively involved with the Students’ Union during my time there. Last year, I served as the Vice President of the Indian Society, where I contributed to organizing events and supporting student engagement. Through this role, I gained valuable experience working here and developed strong leadership and teamwork skills. I am dedicated to ensure every student feels supported, included, and empowered throughout their journey. My role focuses on helping you reach your personal and academic goals while creating a positive and welcoming environment for all. I strive to be approachable and friendly—someone you can talk to openly, whether you need guidance, support, or just a conversation. Above all, my main goal is to make your university experience as enjoyable and memorable as possible, helping you make the most of every opportunity along the way. What are my priorities for this year?

What do I do outside of work?

My priorities for this year focus on creating a stronger sense of community and connection across the university. I plan to develop engaging campaigns that encourage students to get involved and feel a true sense of belonging, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate and be part of something meaningful during their time here.

Outside of my role, I enjoy playing cricket, table tennis, and badminton, and I occasionally go to the gym. I also like spending time on mobile games to relax. In my free time, I love watching movies and I’m a big fan of Marvel films.

Another key priority is to make the Bucks Students’ Union more visible and accessible to all students. I want to ensure that everyone is aware of the opportunities, support, and services available, so they can make the most of their university experience. Most importantly, I aim to stay in direct contact with students and be approachable at all times. I want you to feel heard, valued, and supported, and I am committed to listening to your ideas, concerns, and feedback to help create a better experience for everyone. 7

Hi everyone! I'm Julia, your Vice President Education and Welfare! I studied Criminology here at Bucks, so I know exactly what it's like to be a student balancing lectures, assignments, placements, work, and everything else that comes with university life. Before becoming your Vice President, I worked as a Bar Supervisor at the Venue and got involved in the Leadership Academy, which helped me build confidence, develop leadership skills, and meet some amazing people. When I first started university, I never imagined I'd end up representing thousands of students. Getting involved with the Students' Union completely changed my university experience, and now I'm excited to help make yours just as memorable. What do I do outside of work?

My Plans for this year:

Building Our Community:

Outside of the Students' Union, I love spending time with my family and friends, travelling whenever I get the chance, and staying active.

Safe and Smart:

University is about more than studying. I'll be supporting events, campaigns, volunteering opportunities, and initiatives that help students make friends, build confidence, and enjoy their time at Bucks.

I'm passionate about criminology, cyber security which I want to pursue in the near future. Whether it's exploring new places, relaxing with my dog, or planning new ideas to improve student life, I'm always keeping busy!

I'm launching a campaign focused on helping students stay safe throughout university life. This includes personal safety, placement safety, cyber security, scam awareness, healthy relationships, consent, housing safety, and making sure everyone knows where to get support when they need it. Your Education, Your Voice: I want every student to feel heard. I'll be working with Course Reps and gathering regular student feedback to improve teaching, assessments, feedback, placements, and the overall academic experience.

Come and say hello! My office door is always open, so don't be afraid to pop in for a chat, ask a question, or share an idea. I'm here to represent you, support you, and make sure your voice is heard throughout your time at BNU. I can't wait to meet you all—welcome to Bucks!

Support That Works: I'll continue working closely with the University's support services to make sure they're accessible, well promoted, and genuinely meeting students' needs. Whether it's wellbeing, academic support, financial advice, or disability services, I want students to know help is always available.

Bucks VPSACE

10

Hey everyone, I’m Feba your VPSACE So let me tell you a little about myself…my journey at BNU began as an international student studying MSc Physician Associate Studies and I understand the importance of feeling welcomed, supported, and included in a new environment. During my time here, I’ve had the opportunity to be involved with the Students’ Union in several leadership roles, including being a Fresher Helper, College Officer and Voice Officer. Each of these experiences allowed me to connect with students, understand the challenges they face, and appreciate the importance of having a strong student voice and develop skills in communication, leadership, and creating positive change. Now, as your Vice President Student Affairs and Campus Experience or VPSACE, because I know it’s quite a long title, I want to bring everything I have learned into this role and continue working towards making student life at Bucks the best it can be. I truly believe that university is about more than just a degree, it’s about the people you meet, the experiences you create, and feeling like you belong. Whether you are starting your first year, returning for another year, or joining us from another country, every student should feel welcomed, supported, and valued.

Having experienced university life as both a student and a Students’ Union representative, I understand that every student journey is different. Some days will be exciting and full of opportunities, while others may feel challenging. My aim is to be someone students can approach, whether you have an idea to share, feedback to give, or simply need someone to listen. This year, I’m excited to meet more of you, hear your stories, and work together to build a campus community where everyone feels connected, supported, and proud to be part of Bucks.

My role is based at Uxbridge and Nottingham campuses and is about ensuring that student voices are heard and that students have opportunities to shape their university experience. I want to work alongside students to understand what matters most to you, celebrate the amazing things happening across our campuses, and help create positive changes where they are needed.

11

What I Want to Achieve Together? SU Visibility and Awareness: Making sure students know who the Students’ Union is, what support and services are available, and how they can get involved. Student Wellbeing and Mental Health: Continuing to support student wellbeing through awareness, initiatives, and ensuring students know where to access support. Academic and Student Experience: Working to improve the overall student experience, including areas such as placements, academic support, and opportunities for students to thrive. Creating New Opportunities: I know that throughout the year new challenges, ideas, and opportunities may come up, and I’m excited to work alongside students to adapt, grow, and make the most of them together. What do I do outside of work? I love listening to music, watching movies, baking, trying new food and shopping (oh wow, how could I forget shopping?!) but most importantly, having heartfelt conversations with family and friends."

Got something to say?

Say it louder — as a Student Rep, Senior Rep or College Officer

Speak for your course or college. Shape the experience and get rewarded. Want to stand out, gain leadership experience, and make a real difference for your course mates? Becoming a Student Leader is a flexible, part-time opportunity to represent your peers, shape the student experience, and build valuable skills for your future. Sound like you?

feedback, and they co-chair Programme Committee Meetings alongside staff. This role plays a key part in supporting the flow of communication between students and staff, helping to identify both areas of good practice and opportunities for improvement within their department.

Check out what these roles are all about and see how you can get involved this year.

Senior Representatives receive an additional £100 on top of their Student Rep role in recognition of their contributions.

Student Representatives:

College Officers:

Student reps are elected by their course mates to provide a credible student voice to feedback to the University.

College Officers collate information on the student experience in their college, liaising with student reps and senior reps to ensure that they have a sound understanding of the areas for improvement affecting students across the range of courses within their college, alongside areas of good practice, and feeding this back to the Students’ Union and University.

Student reps can instigate change, minimise miscommunication between staff and students, ensure that assumptions are not made about the student experience, and improve their course for future years. They are elected by their peers to be the voice of their course and are the first point of contact for the students they represent for concerns or positive feedback. Becoming a student rep is an amazing opportunity to gain skills and experience in several areas and, most importantly, represent the views of your year or cohort. Student reps are rewarded up to £100, gain in-demand skills such as leadership, negotiation, and teamwork, and make an impact for themselves and their course. Each year of every course needs a student rep, so why not put yourself forward and ensure your peers have a say in their university experience, all whilst boosting your CV? Senior Representative:

College Officers assist the Representation team throughout the year with various administrative tasks associated with the student rep programme. These include collating feedback for Programme Committee Meetings and communicating regularly with student reps in their college. Full details will be provided to those appointed.

How do I apply? Senior Representatives and College Officers will be appointed through an application process. Please email surepresentation@bnu.ac.uk for more information. Student Representatives will be elected by members of their course. Interested students will need to nominate themselves on the Students’ Union website between Monday 28 September at 10am and Friday 16 October at noon. Voting will take place between 10am on Monday 19 October to Friday 23 October at noon here: bucksstudentsunion.org/ elections/ studentrep You can also submit your nomination by emailing surepresentation@bnu.ac.uk with the below details: • Full name • Student ID • Course and year of study • Contact email

The three Colleges are: • Creative Arts, Technology, and Engineering • Health and Society • Leadership and Innovation We are looking for one student officer per college. College officers are paid an hourly rate of £14.24 for their work.

Senior Representatives build on their experience as Student Reps by taking on additional responsibilities within their course area. They meet regularly with student reps in their course cluster to gather and share

It’s Only Cool If It’s Mutual! The A-Z of Consent Starting university opens the door to all kinds of new experiences — from meeting people from different backgrounds and exploring your independence, to navigating relationships, identity, and personal boundaries. It’s a time of learning, not just in the lecture halls, but in everyday life. One of the most important things you can learn during this time is how to understand and practice consent — clearly, confidently, and respectfully. Consent isn’t just a one-time conversation or a checkbox before sex. It’s about mutual respect, clear

communication, and shared responsibility — in relationships, friendships, group settings, and even digital spaces. It’s about understanding boundaries (your own and others'), knowing how to express your comfort or discomfort, and recognising that consent is ongoing, enthusiastic, and can be withdrawn at any time. Despite how essential it is, consent is often misunderstood or reduced to vague assumptions and outdated norms. That’s where this A–Z guide comes in. Think of it as a crash course in what consent really looks like — from A for Autonomy

“Are you into this?”

Not just a good line, but also a legal safeguard. Useful everywhere—from your bed to the beanbags in the SU.

DM Sliding ≠ Consent

Booze ≠ Boundaries Bypass

If they’re too smashed to find their flat keys, they’re too smashed to consent.

Ex-pectations

Replying to your meme does not mean “come over after pres.” Know the difference.

Just because you used to hook up doesn’t mean it’s still on. They don’t owe you a sequel.

Group Projects ≠ Green Light

Hallway Flirting Isn’t A Binding Agreement

They’re tolerating you for a 2:1, not planning a post-presentation shag.

You locked eyes near the lift. That doesn’t mean you should follow them to their floor.

to Z for Zero Pressure. Each entry breaks down a key idea, myth, or term in a way that’s clear, relatable, and relevant to your everyday life on and off campus. Whether you’re figuring things out for yourself, trying to support a friend, or just want to better understand the language of respect, this guide is here to help. No shame, no judgment — just the information and tools you need to build more respectful, confident, and informed connections.

Can I Kiss You?

Still undefeated. Beats awkward face collisions in the smoking area every time.

Flatmates Are Not Fair Game

You live together. Don’t make it weird. Please

“I Guess...” Means No

Grey answers = red flag. If they sound unsure, hit pause.

Just Because It’s Tinder...

...doesn’t mean it’s a guarantee. Consent is ongoing, not part of the terms and conditions.

Morning-After Doesn’t Equal Regret-Proof If they say they didn’t consent, it’s serious. Don’t dismiss it. Ever.

“Pre-drinks Pressure” Isn’t Flirty

That “go on, just one kiss” stuff? It’s not banter. It’s coercive. Don’t be that person.

Sober Consent is Solid Consent

Late night vibes are cute, but clear-headed “yes” in the moment is where it’s at.

“Vibe Checks” Are Real

Check in. “Still good?” “Want to stop?” Doesn’t kill the mood— shows you’re not a tw*t.

27

You Can Say No Too

Even if you’re the one who initiated. Even if it’s halfway through. You’re allowed to change your mind.

“Kinda” Isn’t Consent

Library Looks Don’t Count

Kinda hot? Kinda vibing? Kinda not enough. Clarity is king.

They glanced at you over their laptop. That’s not flirting—it’s anxiety.

Naked ≠ “Now You Can Do Anything”

One Night Stand = One Night of Consent

Even mid-hookup, consent can be withdrawn. That “yes” isn’t an all-access pass.

Quiet Isn’t Consent

Silence, stillness, awkward nodding? Not a green light. Use your words. Ask.

Texts Aren’t Contracts

That “you up?” message doesn’t mean they owe you anything.

Walk of Shame? No Thanks

Let’s normalise the Walk of “I was respected and had fun, thanks” instead.

Zero Excuses

Consent isn’t “extra.” It’s the bar. Fall below it? That’s on you.

No automatic rebooking. Always ask. Even if it’s “tradition” after Crisis.

Respect the “Nah”

If they don’t want to, they don’t want to. Don’t beg, guilt, or negotiate.

Uni Is Temporary, Regret Isn’t

Be the person they feel safe remembering—not one they have to report.

X-Rated Snaps? Get Consent First

Before you share anything, even with mates—did they say yes? If not, it’s a crime.

The Clean Drain Campaign

A Guide to Avoiding Blockages and Pollution

Drains are an essential part of every UK household, silently carrying away wastewater from our sinks, showers, toilets, and appliances. But what many people don’t realise is that what we put down our drains can cause significant blockages, costly repairs, environmental pollution, and even public health risks. In the UK alone, water companies deal with over 300,000 sewer blockages every year, costing the industry and bill-payers millions of pounds. A major culprit? What people put down their drains. Here’s a practical guide on what you can and cannot put down your drains — and why it matters. What You Can Put Down the Drains: 1. Water Clean water and wastewater from daily use (like washing or bathing) are safe. 2. Mild Cleaning Liquids Diluted household cleaning products can be rinsed down the sink in moderation, as long as they’re marked as safe for drains.

What You Should Never Put Down the Drains:

Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) Why it’s a problem: These substances might be liquid when hot, but they solidify as they cool, sticking to pipe walls and forming ‘fatbergs’. UK Impact: Thames Water removed a 130-tonne fatberg from a London sewer in 2017 — the size of a double-decker bus! What to do instead: Pour cooled fats into a container and dispose of them in the bin. Some councils provide fat recycling schemes.

Wet Wipes, Nappies and Sanitary Products Why it’s a problem: These don’t break down like toilet paper and can cause massive clogs. UK Fact: Water UK reports that 93% of material causing sewer blockages are wet wipes. What to do instead: Only flush the 3Ps — Pee, Poo, and (toilet) Paper. Everything else goes in the bin.

• These can harm water treatment processes and pollute waterways. • Many councils run hazardous waste disposal schemes – check with your local authority.

Hair • Hair binds with grease and soap, forming stubborn clogs in shower and sink pipes. • Use a drain guard to catch hair and empty it into the bin.

Medications •Flushing pills or pouring liquid meds down the sink contaminates water supplies. • Return unused medicines to your local pharmacy for safe disposal. How to Keep Your Drains Healthy: • Use drain guards: These catch debris like hair and food bits. • Run hot water: Regularly flush your sink with hot water to prevent grease buildup. • Clean your drains naturally: A mixture of baking soda and vinegar, followed by hot water, can help keep things flowing.

Coffee Grounds and Food Scraps

• Educate your household: Make sure everyone knows what should and shouldn’t go down the drain.

• They clump together in pipes and act like glue for fats and oils.

Conclusion:

• Compost these instead, or dispose of in your food waste bin.

Paint, Solvents, and Chemicals

The Clean Drain Campaign

Caring for your drains is not just about avoiding personal inconvenience — it’s about protecting your home, your community, and the environment. In the UK, the message is clear: only flush the 3Ps and bin the rest. By making small changes in your daily habits, you can help prevent blockages, avoid costly repairs, and reduce pollution to our rivers and seas. Here’s a practical guide on what you can and cannot put down your drains — and why it matters. 36

Union Council... did someone say FREE pizza? Union Council is the highest form of representation at the Students’ Union and serves as our senior representative body. Meeting throughout the year, the Council was established to represent the voice of the students. It is a platform that informs students about changes to policies within the Union, offers the opportunity to vote on university-wide issues, and directs our lobbying approach. All students are welcome to attend these meetings to give feedback on their experiences and we strongly encourage new voices. Every month, our Elected Officers provide updates on their efforts to enhance the student experience, along with a round-up of key changes made at the Union's top-level meetings. Students also can quiz our Officers and hold them to account for their work to better your time at BNU. Free refreshments are provided at every meeting including FREE Domino's pizza. So not only can you have a major input on the student experience at BNU but you can also grab yourself some free pizza in the process - what's not to love?! We also give out food vouchers to one random winner at every meeting as part of our wider cost of living work as a Union. Union Council is led by an elected student Chair, who is responsible for the running of the council and ensuring that all members have the chance to raise and discuss any ideas or issues within the meeting. They help set the agenda, chair discussions, ensure fair representation, and maintain communication with Council members.

37

Nominations are currently open for the 2026-27 Union Council Chair, so if you want to enhance your CV, gain hands-on experience with time and people management, as well as develop your skills in public speaking and leadership, why not put yourself forward? Nominations open at 10am, Monday 28 September and close at noon Friday 16 October 2026. Voting will take place the following week. You can submit your nomination at bucksstudentsunion.org/elections/ unioncouncilchair, or by emailing surepresentation@bnu.ac.uk with the below details: • Full name • Student ID • Contact email

Our first Union Council will be held on Thursday 15 October from 5pm. Keep an eye on the Students’ Unions ‘What’s On’ page for the location and future dates, and for more information or how you can get involved, speak to any member of the Elected Officer team or email surepresentation@bnu.ac.uk

MONEY ADVICE 2026-27 Guidance

Whilst we hope your time at University is all plain sailing and smiles, the Advice Centre is always here should that not be the case. We are the Advice Centre, here to listen to, advise and support students by providing a professional, independent and confidential service, which is accessible and welcoming. We will use our experience and knowledge on student issues to influence University thinking to make life better for students at BNU. Hopefully by now you have sorted out your finances for this academic year, and know what you’ll be getting in terms of student support or if you’re not eligible for student support, have enough money available to see you through.

Budgeting To give you an idea of how much money you will need, here are some figures of what an average student might expect to spend in a week: • Rent

£153

• Groceries

£40

• Daily Travel

£25

• Socialising

£50

• Books

£30

• Takeaways

£25

The total average spending in this example is £270 per week. Obviously, this does not mean that this will be your weekly expenditure, so it is important to work out what your budget will be for the year and plan accordingly. The money you may receive in loans from Student Finance and any other grants or bursaries will probably not be enough to meet all your expenses, so money from a part-time job or from parents will be needed. It is also important to prioritise your expenditure, for instance making sure that you have enough money to pay your rent, bills and for food before you spend your money on other less important things.

If you haven’t, you need to get this sorted as a matter of urgency. Arriving at university without enough money will make your life very tough and can impact on your ability to pass your course.

Welfare benefits Most full-time students in higher education are not eligible for any welfare benefits, but some are. Visit gov.uk for information on benefits. If you are on any welfare benefits before you start your course, you must inform the relevant agency that you are now on a full-time higher education course. If you are eligible for student funding some of it is counted as income for benefit purposes.

A New Home Away From Home:

The Anime and Cosplay Society

The Evolution - Since its launch in January 2026, the African Society has grown into one of Buckinghamshire New University's most welcoming and vibrant student communities. Established to celebrate African culture while promoting inclusion, the society offers a place where African students and anyone with an interest in African heritage, music, food and traditions can connect, build friendships and feel at home.

Come on down to the Anime and Cosplay society!

The African Society’s Journey at BNU

The society made its first appearance at the 2026 Fresher's Fair, where students met the founding committee, learned about its vision, and signed up to become members. The positive response highlighted the demand for a society that celebrates African identity while encouraging cultural exchange and creating a sense of belonging for students from all backgrounds. Building Connections Through Community - Following the success of the Fresher's Fair, the African Society hosted its first official Meet and Greet, bringing students together for an evening of conversations, games and cultural exchange. The event provided members with the opportunity to meet new people, share experiences, and contribute ideas for society's future. A key moment of the evening was the election of the 2027 Executive Committee, reflecting the society's commitment to inclusion, shared leadership, and giving members a voice in shaping its direction. Strengthening Community: African Community Picnic - To conclude an exciting first year, members gathered for the African Community Picnic at Hughenden Park on 20 June 2026. The potluck event encouraged everyone to share food, laughter, and meaningful conversations in a relaxed outdoor setting. As the African Society continues to grow, it welcomes all new and returning students to become part of its journey. With exciting events, new partnerships and opportunities ahead, society remains committed to celebrating culture, building community and creating lasting memories. We also provide cosplay sessions where we help you gain practical skills that you can use to create your own cosplays. In these cosplay sessions we are hoping to help you with; wig styling, hand-sewing, designing, makeup and more. This year we plan on attending at least one convention together, giving our members a chance to experience the wider anime and cosplay community and are wanting to host more Cosplay based sessions. We also hope those who want to start getting into anime can join us for recommendations for where to start and even find adjacent hobbies to go along with it, the society is a safe space to find fellow geeks and nerds who may share common interests so don’t be afraid to come and have a chat. If you’re completely new to Anime or Cosplay FRET NOT! You do not need to know anything before joining us. There will always be someone happy to share their love of the subject. Between us, some of our favourites are ‘Bleach’, ‘Seraph of the end’ and ‘The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.’ Even if you just stay for a little, you will always be welcome! We meet on Mondays at 5:30pm. If you’re interested, please feel free to stop by! We’re in room N3.03.

On Your Marks, Get Set, BNUBakes!

Bangladeshi Society at Bucks New University:

The way to a person’s heart is through their stomach – perhaps not anatomically correct, but who hasn’t been swayed by a batch of homemade cupcakes before? Or if sweets aren’t your cup of tea, a plate of hearty sausage rolls, where just one is never enough! Whatever your vice, BNU Baking Society has it all.

University life is about much more than lectures and assignments, it is also about creating friendships, embracing diversity, and finding a sense of belonging. The Bangladeshi Society at Buckinghamshire New University plays a vital role in helping students achieve these goals by bringing together individuals who share a common heritage while welcoming people from all cultural backgrounds.

Food is more than just nourishment – it tells a story. Each dish – and each person’s interpretation of a food or theme – has careful nuances behind its creation. It could be a childhood favourite, a recipe passed down through the generations, or something that folds modernity into something more traditional BNU Baking Society meets once a week, 5-7pm on a Monday (room TBD). Each session is jam-packed with fun, food and future plans – the perfect way to start the week. We even set a weekly ‘Baking Challenge’ to give you ideas on what to bake for the following week, encouraging you to try out new recipes and cuisines – and we provide an ingredient that matches the theme to get you started. Not a baker? Not a problem! Just come along and enjoy a bit of respite from your studies – good vibes, friendly faces, and delicious baked goods. You might even be inspired to try your hand at making something. Plus, if you can’t make it to a session but want to bake the following week, the themes are posted on our Instagram – @bnubakes – so you’ll never miss an opportunity! This year, we’re hosting a Staff v Students Bake-Off competition (date and time TBD), so if you fancy yourself as a Paul Hollywood in the making, don’t hesitate to get involved. We’re also cooking up something special for our regular members, so keep an eye on our Instagram page and keep attending sessions so you don’t miss out on the announcement! So, what are you waiting for? Dust off your apron and whisk us away to your happy place, where your food tells your story.

Building Community, Celebrating Culture!

The society serves as a home away from home for Bangladeshi students. It provides a supportive environment where members can connect, share experiences, and help one another adjust to university life in the United Kingdom. Whether students newly arrived or have been studying for several years, the society encourages meaningful friendships and promotes a strong sense of community. Throughout the academic year, the Bangladeshi Society will organizes a variety of cultural, social, and educational events. Celebrations of important festivals such as Pohela Boishakh (Bengali New Year) showcase the rich traditions, music, food, and cultural heritage of Bangladesh. These events offer an opportunity for the wider university community to experience and appreciate Bangladeshi culture, strengthening intercultural understanding and inclusion. Beyond cultural celebrations, the society also supports students' personal and professional development. Networking events, career discussions, workshops, and collaborative activities help members build confidence, develop leadership skills, and expand their professional connections. These experiences contribute to students' overall university journey and prepare them for future careers in an increasingly global workplace. One of the society's greatest strengths is its commitment to inclusivity. Membership is open to everyone, regardless of nationality or background. Students from different cultures are encouraged to participate, learn about Bangladesh, and share their own traditions, creating an environment built on respect, friendship, and mutual understanding. The Bangladeshi Society continues to make a positive impact on campus by celebrating diversity, supporting student wellbeing, and promoting cultural exchange. As Bucks New University continues to welcome students from around the world, the society remains a proud example of how cultural communities can enrich university life. Together, we celebrate our heritage, inspire one another, and contribute to a more connected, inclusive, and vibrant university community.

Welcome! From the Christian Union

Living life on the cutting edge

Bucks Blade HEMA Have you ever wanted to learn sword fighting? Ever been passionate about medieval fighting styles? Do you do acting and need to learn stage fighting? The Bucks Blades is the society for you, with a great and friendly community and an amazing roster of teachers, this is the best way for you to learn sword fighting. We hold tournaments and weekly sessions where you can learn and spar with other members of the society, during these sessions you’ll learn the fundamentals of the craft and learn how to expand these fundamentals into a smooth and seamless practice, and if one style isn’t for you we teach multiple styles such as one-handed, hand and a half, bucklers, and more. Once you are done with all the sword fighting you can enjoy a nice time at spoons with your fellow society members to get to know them and indulge in a meal if you so wish. And if you are ever worried about not having any skill in sword fighting previously don’t worry too much, as everyone starts somewhere. This is the perfect place to start and as you get further you’ll wonder why you didn’t want to join sooner. After all as the saying goes practice makes perfect and this is the perfect place to practice. But don’t worry as we don’t just do sword fighting but plan to look into the history of the craft we love, such as different swords throughout history and the practicality of this practice throughout history. In short, Blades HEMA is an excellent way of having fun, making new friends, and doing something you may never have had the chance to do before!

Starting University can be very overwhelming and difficult to navigate as a Christian, but this is where the Christian Union can help and close that gap for you! Are you looking for a community filled with fire for Christ? The CU is a group of individuals seeking for Jesus together in community, we meet weekly on Mondays to discuss topics surrounding the Bible and how to navigate Christianity as a student on campus. Outside of this, our group has grown involved with serving tea and coffee on campus and collaborations with the Multi-Faith Chaplaincy with some seasonal singing to lighten up the mood. With support from UCCF and churches in High Wycombe, there are many activities to get stuck in with the CU ranging from prayers, worship nights, socials and spontaneous hangouts; our favourite is travelling to the Fold every month in Hammersmith, London. Keep a look out for our event of the year - our Christian Union Concert! You wouldn’t want to miss it. Whether you are someone who is looking to explore more about Christ or a committed Christian looking for community, the Christian Union has a space for you and we hope to C U soon!

All wrapped up neatly and tidily with swords. If you’re unsure about joining, don’t be, come for a session or find us at Freshers' Fair where we can answer all your questions.

OPERATION: INSIGHT

Do I need to study Game Development to learn it?

MISSION STATUS: RECRUITMENT ACTIVE MISSION BRIEF: Attention, recruit, If you're joining Bucks New University this September and are studying Aviation Security, Investigation, Global Security, Intelligence Analysis or Strategic Analysis, welcome aboard. If you're not on one of these pathways but have a genuine interest in intelligence, defence, geopolitics or current affairs, you're just as welcome. The Intelligence Society is a place for curious minds. Our mission is to bring what you learn in the classroom into the real world, giving you opportunities to apply your knowledge through practical experiences, discussions and activities that go beyond your course.

While studying Game Development at university can provide valuable support, structured learning, and a wider range of opportunities, many successful indie developers are entirely self-taught. So why not enjoy the best of both worlds?

At the heart of our society is Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR). Together, we explore how intelligence is collected, analysed and used to support decision-making across national security, policing, defence and international affairs. From analysing current events and emerging threats to exploring how intelligence influences operations around the world, our members develop the analytical thinking and practical skills that are valued across the security sector.

Our society gives you the opportunity to learn game development in a supportive, collaborative environment without needing to be enrolled on Buckinghamshire New University's Game Development course.

You don't need to be studying a security-related degree to join. Whether you're hoping to pursue a career in intelligence or you're simply fascinated by how the world works behind the headlines, you'll find a welcoming community of students who are passionate about learning, sharing ideas and challenging each other's thinking!!

If you already have skills in a complementary field—such as animation, art, audio, writing, or design—you already have something valuable to contribute. Whether you're looking to:

YOUR ARSENAL: Joining the Intelligence Society gives you access to opportunities that take your learning far beyond the lecture theatre: Throughout the year, we welcome *industry professionals* to speak to our members, offering first-hand insight into careers across intelligence, defence, policing and the wider security sector. These sessions provide valuable advice, real-world experiences and the chance to ask questions directly to those working in the profession.

Surprisingly, no.

• Expand your portfolio. • Meet like-minded people who enjoy games and game development. • Learn new skills or improve the ones you already have. ...this society is for you. Although we're called the Game Development Society, you don't have to be a programmer or even want to make games professionally. If your goal is simply to build an art portfolio, create music, write stories, or develop other creative skills alongside game projects, you'll be just as welcome. We're excited to be running sessions again every Monday (6-8pm) and Tuesday (5-10pm), and we'd love to see some new faces. For any questions, please feel free to get in contact using our social media links or contact information on our minisite.

We also organise educational visits that bring the industry to life. Last year, members visited Securitas, where we gained an insight into one of the world's leading security organisations, explored the challenges facing the modern security industry and learned about the wide range of career opportunities available. We're already looking forward to organising more visits throughout the coming academic year. One of the greatest strengths of the Intelligence Society is our community; We bring together students from every year group and across all Global Security pathways, creating opportunities to network, exchange ideas and learn from one another. So Whether you're looking for academic advice, career guidance or simply want to meet people who share your interests, you'll always find a supportive team around you. University is also about enjoying the journey. Alongside our professional events, we host regular socials, giving members the opportunity to relax, make new friends and build connections that often last well beyond graduation!! Whether you're preparing for a career in intelligence, security, aviation, policing or defence- or you're simply eager to learn more about the world around you- the Intelligence Society is the place to develop your skills, broaden your perspective and become part of a growing network of future security professionals!!

International Students Are Never Alone

Our Mission: At ISOC, our mission is to foster a welcoming Islamic brotherhood and sisterhood where every student feels valued, supported, and at home. We strive to build an inclusive, faith-centred community that is open to everyone, whether you're taking your first steps in learning about Islam, looking to strengthen your faith, or simply hoping to meet like-minded people.

Moving to the UK as an international student is an exciting journey, but it also comes with many challenges. Being away from family, adapting to a new culture, and adjusting to a different education system can sometimes make students feel isolated and lonely. These feelings are common, especially during the first few months of study. International students often face academic pressures such as completing assignments, meeting deadlines, and adapting to new teaching and learning methods. Alongside their studies, many students also need to find part-time jobs to support their living expenses. Balancing academics, work, and personal life can be overwhelming, making it difficult to achieve their goals.

Starting university is an exciting new chapter, and we want ISOC to be a place where you can make meaningful friendships, grow spiritually, and create lasting memories throughout your time here. Our Vision: Our vision is to bring students together through a diverse range of events that nurture both faith and friendship. From relaxed socials such as picnics, sip-and-paint evenings, games nights, and sports like football, to inspiring Islamic reminders from guest speakers, halaqah circles, Qur'an journalling sessions, and other opportunities for learning and reflection, there's something for everyone. Charity Initiatives: Giving in charity is at the heart of our community. Alhamdulillah, over the past two years we've raised funds for numerous humanitarian causes, including emergency appeals for Palestine, Sudan, and other communities in need. This year, we're excited to continue making a difference together through a variety of fundraising events, including: - Delicious bake sales - Charity auction dinners - Community fundraising events - Awareness campaigns - Volunteer opportunities Every donation, no matter how small, has the potential to make a huge impact—and we'd love for you to get involved. Together, we can be a means of bringing hope and relief to those who need it most. We Can't Wait to Meet You! As you begin this exciting new chapter of university life, we pray that Allah blesses your journey with beneficial knowledge, sincere friendships, and countless opportunities for growth. Whether you're looking to strengthen your faith, meet new people, or simply find a place where you feel at home, we hope ISOC becomes a meaningful part of your university experience. We can't wait to welcome you into our community and share this academic year with you. We encourage you to come along to our events, get involved, and make the most of everything ISOC has to offer. No matter where you are on your journey, there will always be a place for you here.

Recognising these challenges, Kingdom Connect has taken a meaningful step to ensure that international students never feel alone. The organisation brings students together through a variety of social, cultural, and community events held both within universities and across local communities. These events create opportunities for students to make new friends, share experiences, and build a strong support network. Kingdom Connect has placed special emphasis on supporting South Indian students while warmly welcoming students from all backgrounds. Through cultural celebrations, networking events, sports activities, workshops, and fellowship gatherings, students can stay connected to their roots while embracing life in the UK. These gatherings encourage friendship, mutual support, and personal growth. The organisation believes that every student deserves a sense of belonging. By creating a caring and inclusive environment, Kingdom Connect helps students overcome loneliness, build confidence, and focus on their academic and personal success. Studying abroad is not only about earning a degree; it is also about creating lifelong friendships, discovering new opportunities, and growing as an individual. With initiatives like Kingdom Connect, international students can confidently pursue their dreams, knowing they are part of a community that cares, supports, and grows together.

About our society!!

A Labour of Love:

Joining our K-pop Society is about so much more than simply listening to music—it's about becoming part of a welcoming, supportive, and exciting community where everyone can share their passion for Korean pop culture. Whether you've been a fan of K-pop for years or you've only recently discovered your first group, our society offers a space where everyone is included and encouraged to participate.

To the brand-new student midwives arriving this September; firstly, a massive congratulations! You are embarking on one of the most rewarding, challenging, and beautiful journeys of your lives. Starting a healthcare degree is incredibly exciting, but between balancing placement shift patterns, anatomy lectures, and clinical skills, we know it can also feel a little overwhelming.

Why the Midwifery Society is Your New Campus Family

We host a variety of fun activities throughout the year, including dance workshops, quizzes, karaoke, comeback celebrations, film and K-drama screenings, and themed social events that give members the chance to make lasting friendships while enjoying the music and culture they love. Our society is a fantastic place to meet people with similar interests from different backgrounds, helping you build confidence, expand your social circle, and create unforgettable university memories. We celebrate artists from across the K-pop industry, so whether you're a fan of BTS, BLACKPINK, SEVENTEEN, TWICE, Stray Kids, ATEEZ, NewJeans, EXO, or many others, you'll always find someone to share your excitement with. We also provide opportunities to learn more about Korean culture, language, fashion, and entertainment in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. No dance experience, Korean language skills, or extensive knowledge of K-pop are required—just an open mind and the enthusiasm to have fun. Our members are friendly, welcoming, and always happy to introduce new people to the community, making it easy to feel at home from your very first event. Whether you're looking to destress after lectures, discover new music, improve your dancing, attend concerts with friends, or simply find a place where you can truly be yourself, our K-pop Society has something for everyone. By joining, you'll become part of a vibrant community that celebrates creativity, diversity, friendship, and a shared love of K-pop, making your university experience even more enjoyable and memorable.

Welcome to Musical Theatre Society!

Come and Join the Paramedic Society!

Bucks Musical Theatre is a welcoming space for all students with an interest in the performing arts! From weekly sessions focusing on acting, dance and singing, to performance opportunities, masterclasses with industry professionals and the chance to socialise outside of timetabled hours – you’ll find something to love with Bucks MT!

The Paramedic Society is here to bring together like-minded people, whether you are a student paramedic, or not – everyone is welcome. The ParaSoc allows you to connect with students from every year, to share their experiences and tips and tricks with you.

Throughout the 2025-26 academic year, members of Bucks Musical Theatre had the opportunity to perform and showcase their talents across various venues, whether inside or outside the university. We performed at the High Wycombe Christmas Lights Switch-On ceremony, entertained residents at the local Ryeview Manor Care Home and brought the party to Wycombe Pride. On campus, we performed at the university’s Staff Awards ceremony and held a Winter and Summer showcase, where members sang and choreographed their way through some of the industry’s greatest hits to audiences full of family and friends. The committee are thrilled to be running one of the university’s most successful societies for another year, with Bucks Musical Theatre having won the ‘Society of the Year’ award in 2019, 2022 and 2024, and being at least nominated for the award every year. We have some incredible opportunities planned and can only hope that you’ll join us for a year jam-packed with fun, from masterclasses to performances and trips. We hold weekly sessions on Monday evenings and run socials at 9pm every Wednesday. Please follow our Instagram page (@bucksmtsociety) where this will be updated and confirmed closer to the time! If you have any questions or would like more information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch! We have a page within the Bucks Students Union website, or you can speak to us directly – feel free to DM us on Instagram or alternatively email us on bucksmtsociety@hotmail.com!

The ParaSoc is also an excellent way to unwind through social events, from casual meet ups, themed social nights and charity hikes. As a society we also want to continue to provide opportunities to learn from professionals in our field and seek professional development. At Bucks we understand the importance of volunteering in our community, and what better way to do this than to teach people basic life support, something that will soon become your bread and butter as a student paramedic. In a world where digital platforms having become the main focus of communication, joining the society gives you chance to make personal connections which will be helpful in your professional and personal life. Making lifelong friends and great memories along the way. We are there to celebrate each other's achievements and support members through the tough times. Being a member of the ParaSoc made my transition into the life of a student paramedic much smoother. I had people around to ask the random questions that I didn’t want to ask lecturers. Also, we are way cooler than the other health care students! Starting university can be a daunting time, but why not come along to see us at fresher's fair, have a familiar face, and join us for our welcome social.

From all of the committee, we hope you enjoy the rest of your summer, and we hope to welcome you to the society in September!

BNU Tennis: Serving Up Something New This year saw the launch of the Tennis Society and it's already shaping up to be a brilliant addition to the sports scene on campus, with a strong turnout and plenty more planned for this year. Sessions run every Friday evening at 8pm and being indoors means the weather has no say in whether play goes ahead; a small detail that's made a big difference to consistency throughout the season. Getting to the courts has been made easier, with a minivan running from the SU straight down to the courts and back. Each two-hour session is built around a mix of warmups and games, with time for members to get on court and play some singles or doubles. Our coach Chris has been on hand throughout to help players sharpen their game and with rackets, balls and straps all supplied, there's never been a reason not to turn up. Beyond the tennis itself, Wednesday socials have become a highlight of the week, giving members a chance to get to know the team off the court and build the kind of community that makes a society stick around for years to come. Looking ahead, the committee is keen to introduce competitive fixtures if there's enough interest from members. Joining is free, with sign-up available online and new members are encouraged to hop into the WhatsApp group to stay updated on sessions, socials and anything else.

Designed to give you a record of all your achievements and activities undertaken with the Students’ Union, we can provide printed copies of these to you at your request any time during the year. The Bucks Award is broken down into headings: Volunteering – the number of hours of volunteering you have delivered including a breakdown of whether this was community, committee, ambassador or other. Leadership roles – including membership of the Leadership Academy, committee roles, representation roles and others. Employment – including Freshers helpers, bar and events staff and others. Skills – including all co-curricular training sessions and workshops undertaken with us. As employability has been ranked as a top priority for our students, we can also offer Bucks Award sessions to students at any time through the year. These are self-reflective sessions, where we help you understand what skills you have gained through your time with us and how you can effectively articulate these both in applications and interviews when applying for your dream job. These sessions typically last 1 hour and can be booked around your schedule, either online or in person.

To request your Bucks Award, a Bucks Award session, or for more information on either of these please email us at sutraining@bnu.ac.uk. We hope to see you soon!

Competitive sport at Bucks.

Where sport is

FREE!

Competitive Sports for FREE! Here at Bucks, we offer something not many Universities do. Thanks to The Big Deal you can train and compete each week and not pay a penny. Ranging from Basketball to Rugby, we offer opportunities in 13 different clubs and over 25 teams that you can be a part of. Check out the list on this page for all the clubs we have. Most of our teams play on a Wednesday afternoon anywhere within the SouthEast Region of British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues and knockouts. Outside of BUCS we also have Cheer and Dance clubs, they train weekly throughout the year to compete all over the country against a range of universities. We also offer the opportunity for student athletes to compete in individual sports with a chance to represent us in the BUCS national competitions. Over the last few years, we have sent Snowboarders, track and field athletes, rowers, and fencers to their chosen competition. If you are an individual competitor pop down to the SU office and we’ll do everything we can to get you competing in your chosen sport. Last season we had one team win their league (Men's Basketball). In addition, we won Varsity for the third year in a row in what was a fantastic day full of wonderful memories. At the end of each competitive year, we celebrate our

teams’ successes at the Athletic Union Awards. These awards include, Team of the Year, Captain of the Year, Sportsman of the year, Sportswoman of the Year and Club of the Year plus many more. With the Club of the year being recognised on the Bucks Students Union website with a crown. In addition to the above awards, in 2014, to mark the 25th Athletic Union Awards Dinner, Bucks New University’s Hall of Fame was introduced. The Hall of Fame is reserved for individuals who truly excel on the field. The system, that is built on the American model of ‘retiring shirts’, sees us frame the playing shirt of each recipient and hang it, along with a short biography, displayed at the top of the Atrium. This award is not necessarily handed out each year but is in special recognition of someone who has contributed greatly to university sport and represented the University whilst competing at a high level. Sport at Bucks is something that changes your university experience for the better

and an area that you should absolutely get involved in. Sport has a positive impact on your wellbeing, providing a change of scenery from your everyday courses and is a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends. Getting the most out of your university experience.

“To me, sports is not just about getting fit or gaining strength. It's about being part of a team that feels like family. Joining the women's football team has transformed my experience at university and I now have friends I can turn to for advice or just to hang out with. I definitely would recommend joining a team as soon as possible because you won't regret it.” If you have any questions relating to competitive sport prior to starting at university and know which sport they are for, please visit the Students’ Union website and visit the individual sports page (QR code on this page) to find the relevant contact details. If the questions are more general or pertain to a sport we do not appear to offer, please contact sport@bnu.ac.uk. Or pop into the Students’ Union office in September/October.

Join us at

Badminton! If you’re looking for a fun way to stay active, improve your badminton skills, or meet new people, we’re happy to welcome you to badminton. Whether you’re an experienced player or beginner, everyone is welcome in our for-fun sessions. Check the What’s On page to see when we meet. Additionally, if you’re interested in trying out for the team, consider coming to trials at the start of term. These will be hosted after the for-fun sessions and aimed towards more experienced players who want to play for the university. We have both a men’s and women’s team, so everyone is welcome to try out. The team training sessions will focus on skill and fitness development with our coach in preparation for games.

BNU Basketball Ready for an Exciting New Chapter

As a new academic year approaches, the Bucks New University (BNU) Basketball is excited to build on the incredible success of last season and continue growing both on and off the court. With dedicated Men's and Women's teams, we are proud to offer a welcoming environment where everyone can belong. Whether you're an experienced player, a complete beginner, or simply looking to meet new people and stay active, there is a place for you in our basketball family. Last season was one of our most successful yet. A huge congratulations goes to our Men's team, who were proudly named Team of the Year, an achievement that reflects the hard work, determination, and team spirit shown throughout the season. A special mention must also go to our Women's team. As one of the newest teams at BNU, we've already achieved so much together. From forming lifelong friendships and creating unforgettable memories to competing with passion and pride, the team has laid the foundations for an exciting future. We are incredibly proud of how far we've come and can't wait to continue growing in the seasons ahead. Looking ahead, our goal is simple: to make basketball at BNU bigger and better than ever. We want to welcome more students into our community, develop our players, and create an environment where everyone feels supported, challenged, and inspired. If you're passionate about basketball, or even if you've never picked up a ball before, come and visit us at the Freshers' Fair. Meet our committee, chat with current players, and find out how you can get involved. This is more than just a sports club. It's a community, a support network, and a place to make memories that last a lifetime. We can't wait to welcome you to the BNU Basketball family. We want you to be part of our journey.

BNU Swans – Cheerleading club BNU Swans is an inclusive, competitive and game day cheerleading team, whether you’ve got years of experience or never even heard of the sport we welcome anyone, from all backgrounds to try out. We are incredibly proud to say we achieved official club accreditation this year and are aiming for the same in the coming year. We work hard to maintain high standards across our three team, but most importantly we want this to be a welcoming space for members both new and returning. We know that starting university can be overwhelming, which is why we have three teams to suit all abilities, skill levels and levels of commitment. SUPREMACY (Level 2 Co-ed) Supremacy is a high intensity, competitive team. Open to all skill levels! If you’re after the adrenalin rush of flying, throwing stints and fighting for a spot on the podium this is the team for you.

MONARCHY (Sport for Fun) Monarchy is a new student lead zero pressure team, its designed for anyone who wants the fun side of cheer without the intense commitment. You’ll cheer on the sidelines at games, university events and if your interested even get to choreograph your own sideline routines. Outside of training, the Swans are a big family. We value growth, support, individuality and team spirit. From our Wednesday night socials, pre-training breakfasts, Awards nights and so much more. Joining us means an instant circle of people to support you throughout your university career. Whether you’re looking to compete on the big stage or just want a fun casual hobby to break up UNI life swans is the place for you. Come and see us at freshers fair and we hope to see you all at try-outs.

SERENITY (Pom) Serenity is our competitive Pom team. We focus on sharp, fast-paced routines, synchronisation and high energy visuals while highlighting individual skill and talent. Even if you’ve never danced competitively before, if you love to dance and want to compete on a national stage, come along to try outs and see if it’s the fit for you.

Bucks Netball Bucks FC Bucks FC is a welcoming and competitive community that caters to everyone—whether you’re playing for the first time or an experienced player looking for that competitive fix. For those who earn a spot on one of our four Men's teams, you will play home and away matches in the BUCS leagues and cups, with the season culminating in our flagship Varsity finale match in March. If you are interested in Futsal, we also have a Mens team who are the highest placed team at the university within the BUCS leagues. Our Club is about far more than what happens on the pitch though, it’s a platform to give back through volunteering, charitable efforts, socials and to make friends with likeminded people. Early last year, we raised £400 by letting people wax our players. To show how quickly you can make your mark here, two of this year's three captains joined as freshers just last season. Here is a look at their experiences in their own words: “Coming to university I knew I wanted to be playing Uni football, however I didn’t know that it would make my first year of Uni as good as it did. Ranging from coming in as a fresher to becoming a key member, being treated amazingly from other players as well as staff, this team isn’t just about playing football. It’s about connecting with others from different sports as well as others from different backgrounds. Joining Bucks FC was the best choice I made in my first year. You should make it yours too.” William Philip (1st team Captian) “Joining the club last year was one of the best decisions I made at university. As a fresher, it helped me settle in quickly, meet new people and become part of a welcoming community. From the first session, everyone was friendly and supportive, making it easy to build friendships. The weekly sessions and games gave me something to look forward to and helped me grow on and off the pitch. That's why I wanted to join the committee this year. I wanted to give back, help create the same experience for new members, and make sure everyone feels welcome.” Samuel Rints (3rd team Captian)

The Bucks Swimming Club is open to all students, whether you've been swimming for years or you're just looking to try something different while you're at university. There are no ability requirements to join, and members take part for a variety of reasons, from keeping active to meeting new people. The club runs weekly swimming sessions during term time, giving members the opportunity to swim in a relaxed environment. Some members use the sessions to improve their fitness or spend time in the water, while others simply enjoy having a regular weekly activity. There is no pressure to swim a certain number of lengths or train competitively, and everyone is encouraged to take part at their own pace. Alongside the swimming sessions, the club has an active social calendar throughout the year. Regular socials include evenings at the Students' Union, pub socials, bar crawls, themed socials, sports nights and nights out with other university clubs. These events are a big part of the club and are often where members get to know each other outside the pool. Freshers' Week is usually the busiest time, with plenty of opportunities for new students to come along, meet current members and get involved from the start. The club welcomes students from every course and every year group, making it a good way to meet people outside your lectures and accommodation. Whether you come every week or just drop in when you can, you'll be part of a friendly group that enjoys spending time together both in and out of the water. If you're interested in joining, keep an eye out for the committee during Freshers' Week, come along to a session and see what the club is all about. Whether you're here for the swimming, the socials or a bit of both, everyone is welcome.
