And we’re back! We hope that everyone enjoyed the sunny Bank Holiday (from their homes of course) and had a chocolate-filled Easter! From what we’ve been seeing online everyone has been perfecting their baking skills and is using the time to create some delicious treats for their families – well mostly themselves.

We would like to give a massive shout out and congratulations to everyone who has joined in the 5k nominations and donations for the NHS! Most of you would have seen or been featured on our social media platforms for your amazing efforts and we are so proud that the famous Bucks

volunteering spirit is still going strong. For those of you that have yet to have a spot on our stories or have only just got involved, just send us your running/donation photo at any point and we’ll give you the shout out you deserve.

You’ll be even happier to know that all of the above will be counted towards this year’s RAG total, so please do log your hours and let us know how much you’ve donated.

While it may feel like everything is moving a bit slower, preparations for the year to come are neverending. A few societies and clubs are running elections for some remaining committee positions,

so be sure to cast your vote by 17 Friday April. On a similar note the position for Student Member on Council is still open for anyone that is interested. So if you are looking to further your involvement in the University check out the role on the Students’ Union website under Union Jobs or just drop any of us a message and we’ll be happy to help.

Lastly, get your calendars out and mark Friday 2 – Sunday 4 October 2020 as annual leave, because Festiball has been rescheduled – and it’s going to be a BIG one!

We know we’ll definitely be there… totally acceptable for one last time!

Saturday 18 April One World: Together at Home

Animal lovers get ready! While the zoo might be closed for customers to visit in person during this time. Edinburgh Zoo is hosting live webcams of their animals. Keep updated with some of your favourite animals and learn about them along the way. This Wednesday they will be live streaming the Penguins!

There is no need to leave your house this Saturday as the BBC is bringing a global televised and streamed entertainment special, curated in collaboration with Lady Gaga, which will celebrate the heroic efforts of community health workers around the world.

So, get cosy on your sofa and watch interviews and performances with all of your favourite artist.

Unfortunately the time has come to make the difficult decision around Festiball 2020.

Due to how things are playing out, the current uncertainty and amount of resource we must put into this event we are re-scheduling Festiball 2020 to later in the year.

Festiball will now take place over Friday 2 October, Saturday 3 October and Sunday 4 October 2020.

Tickets will be rolled over automatically to allow you to attend the new dates. However, if you cannot make the new dates please contact your point of purchase for a refund.

All current third years and students leaving Bucks this year will be offered a free ticket, thanks to The Big Deal, to ensure that they do not need to pay an alumni admission. This is to ensure our offering is the same for all our members going forward. We are also offering free entry to all NHS staff to all Bucks Students’ Union events after this pandemic is over.

More details around these offers will be released soon.

Please note the line up has not changed and we aim to deliver the same high standard of production that has come to be expected at Festiball.

My time at Bucks

My time at Bucks

We are talking (remotely!) to all of our Venue staff over the next few weeks and bringing you their run down of what it’s like to work for the Bucks Students’ Union Venue and Events team. This week we hear from Joe, a venue tech who has worked on everything from Frat House to Quiz nights and Freshers Week to Festiball.

“I started work for the Students’ Union at the beginning of my second year, joining an experienced team that were willing to help me every step of my university journey. I was instantly made to feel as part of the group by the rest of the team.

During my time at the Students Union I have been able to gain great experience in a professional setting while being lucky enough to work with artists such as Sigma, Jade Bird, Steel Banglez and DJ OneF all before I turned 21. Experience that is very rare for this industry.

Along with being trusted as an individual to deliver the proper production every night is an opportunity which I’m very happy to have been able to have taken.

The Student’s Union offers students pay which is higher than the average hourly rate for our age group while working an entry level technical crew job.

Student staff work together in a team with everyone pitching in to make things run smoothly allowing the chance for us to make friendships at work. In my first year working for the Students Union I was able to work and look up to students that were further along in their course. Learning from them things that I wouldn’t get from my lectures, like learning to work with high expectations to get the best quality for an event.”

Recent changes to the loan credit cards, and overdrafts might provide some benefit to you if you are financially affected by Covid-19. Measures have been put into place if you are facing short term cash flow problems. The FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) have released a set of measures that came into force on Thursday 9 April 2020 and will apply from Tuesday 14 April. Some providers will be offering the new measures from Thursday 9 April.

What are the changes?

Before agreeing to the changes to your Loan/credit card/ overdraft consider whether this is the right option for you at this moment. You should consider;

Overdrafts

• Think carefully before entering into one of these arrangements • Only do so if you need immediate and temporary financial assistance • If you can afford to make some repayments, even if it is a smaller amount than usual, you should continue to do so • Don’t cancel or reduce payments until you’ve contacted your lender

Under the changes you can ask the provider of your main current account for up to £500 of overdraft borrowing interest free for 3 months. In practice this means:

• If you don’t have an overdraft, or your limit is smaller than £500. You can request a new overdraft or an increased limit.

This will be subject to normal checks on affordability

• If you already have an overdraft and the mount is currently below £500, you will pay no interest for the 3 month period after having applied and been accepted

• If your current arranged overdraft limit is more than £500. Firms are only required to provide up to £500 interest free This measure applies to personal current accounts, but not Basic Bank Accounts (that legally can’t have overdrafts), so contact your provider about what’s possible for you.

If you have a personal loan, credit card, store card, or catalogue credit, you can ask for a freeze on repayments 3 months. Personal loans include guarantor loans, logbook loans, and home collected credit.

• You may be able to make no (or small token) payments for 3 months.

• This won’t affectMONEY your credit file for the period of the payment freeze. However, interest will continue to build during this period, meaning you pay higherLEGAL costs in the ISSUES longer term.

• If you can afford to keep up repayments, either in full or a smaller sum, then you should do so.

At the moment, these proposals don’t cover: • payday loans

• Your lender may offer you alternative temporary relief - for example, where a high rate of interest would accrue during the payment freeze period leading to longer-term financial difficulty.

Advice Centre update Tips on surviving or even thriving through this lockdown This is all a bit weird and unsettling at times isn’t it? But as they say, “Where there are challenges there are opportunities”. Though I have no idea who said it. Here are 10 tips I’ve gathered from many sources to not only survive but even to thrive in the weeks ahead.

• Have a routine and stick to it.

Having a structure to your day is key to coping with such a drastic lifestyle change. Keep your “working week” and “time off” i.e. weekends different.

• Don’t keep checking the news.

Have scheduled times when you check the news and limit it to once or twice a day. I promise you won’t miss out on anything big and constantly checking the news can increase your anxiety.

• If you live with others there will be times you may not get on.

Try and be your best self, be understanding and forgiving.

Talk about any issues before they get too big. If things have got heated giving everyone as much space as possible helps people calm down and gives people time to think things through. Be a fire extinguisher and not a fire starter.

• If you live on your own, make daily contact with friends and or family. Have a regular chat time.

Be a good listener but also reach out when you need support.

• Make your living environment a pleasant place to be. Living in a “dump” can bring you down so spend some time everyday keeping everything clean, fresh and tidy.

• Plan some treats, save a film you want to watch for a Saturday evening. Make some snacks and drinks make the room cosy and have a movie night. Have a dinner party (with no outside guests of course). Make the table look nice and dress to impress.

• Helping others can help to take your mind off your own worries. So if you have some spare time check out the Students’ Union volunteering opportunities offered here on our website: bucksstudentsunion.org/ volunteering • Don’t put unpleasant tasks off, make a list and aim to tick one or two off every day. Break big tasks down into manageable small tasks. Give yourself rewards for achieving things especially doing the things that have to be done but you don’t like doing.

• Control what you can change and try to ignore what you can’t. Take things one day at a time and allow yourself the occasional “wobble”.

• Lastly, live in the moment. Fully experience what’s happening in each moment. If you’ve got more time on your hands slow down, take your time over everything you do, care about what you are doing, enjoy even the simplest of tasks. Be zen!

Recipe corner

Ingredients 85g breadcrumbs, either brown or white 115g grated cheese 450g raw tomatoes, sliced up 55g butter 145ml semi skimmed milk 2 tbsp of single cream Paprika Salt and pepper

A vegetarian side dish, but you could add ham or pre-cooked bacon if you had any to hand. It’s also good for using up bread and tomatoes that might be a bit past their best. It’s great with garlic bread too.

• Pre-heat the oven to 200°C / Gas mark 6 • Mix the grated cheese and breadcrumbs together • Grease a baking dish and cover the bottom with half the breadcrumb and cheese mix • Cover with the sliced tomatoes, season with salt and pepper and dot with butter.

• Mix the milk and cream and pour this over the tomatoes • Top with the remaining breadcrumbs and cheese • Sprinkle with a bit of paprika and bake in the over for 20 minutes • Brown under the grill before serving.

Freshers’ Helpers

Freshers’ Helpers Do you remember what it was like when you first started university? It could have been your first time away from home, you could have been in a new country, but even if you lived just down the road, starting university is a big change.

That’s why the role our Freshers’ Helpers play is so important. You could be helping students into their new accommodation, showing them where their lecture theatre is for their introductions or simply offering a cup of tea and a friendly ear, whatever role you are given you will have helped someone on their journey at Bucks New University.

You will be working on a rota basis, covering all the key roles as required under the guidance of your Head Freshers’ Helper and the Project Coordinator. Duties will include working on the helpdesk and helping all new students with any queries they may have, operating the “tea and toast” service on a night shift or trying to include as many freshers as possible in activities offered by the Students’ Union, ensuring that they are aware of the range of activities we offer.

Full training on the services offered by the Students’ Union and the university as well as your role as a Freshers’ Helper is mandatory and full support is available to help you in giving our freshers the best start possible to their university experience.

This is an incredibly rewarding role, as you can see from the below quotes from previous Freshers’ Helpers on why they decided to apply and what they thought of the job.

“Becoming a Freshers’ Helper has been the perfect opportunity! It has built my CV, made me a bigger part of the Students Union, given me the social and communication skills to work with a range of people in a busy time with people who I may not have met before and has opened my perspective on trying new things. Food Banks Food banks are still very much in need of donations, now more than ever! If you do your weekly shop at a supermarket why not consider picking something up for your local food bank. Most supermarkets have a trolley near the till points where you can drop off food that will get given to a food bank. If you are not going out shopping but may have stockpiled on the pasta or found some unopen food that you know you won’t eat, why not research where your local food bank is and drop it off. If you are unsure where your local food bank is “The Trussell Trust” is a nationwide network of over 1200 foodbanks.

British Red Cross Community Reserve Volunteer By becoming a community reserve volunteer, you will help your community get back on track in the event of a major local emergency. This could be by sharing public health messages, connecting with others locally or providing basic supplies. British Red Cross is currently working with the authorities to support the COVID-19 response, so if you want to become a volunteer and help out, please visit their website reserves.redcross.org.uk

Birdwatching Bet you didn’t think Bird watching would be volunteering?

Well it is using the website eBird!

By using the eBird website you will track your bird sightings and becoming part of a worldwide network of birdwatchers.

You sightings will be used to contribute to conservation decisions and science. ebird.org/home

These are only some suggestions of how you can use your time for good! Whatever you chose to do will have a huge impact on someone else so get involved! When volunteering don’t forget to tell us all about it by tagging the union on Instagram and Twitter and logging your volunteering hours!
