Hi everyone, We hope you are enjoying March so far and are ready for the big month ahead. There is so much to update on this time around, so we hope you are ready for a little bit of a read!

In the past couple of weeks, it has been lovely to see so many of our members get involve with things we offer during your time at university!

Student volunteer week went off with a bang, offering our members 5 different volunteering opportunities across the week, from this week alone we have had seen so many of our members working their way through out awarding scheme.

We were so pleased to see over 150 students attend the first ever wellbeing fair. We created the opportunity for students to walk round and identify with the support services within the union and university but also our local area.

If you feel that there are things you would like to see differently at these sorts of events, please don’t hesitate to email Natasha.

Fairtrade fortnight is growing close to an end… However, this doesn’t shy away from some of the amazing activities that have been held during this time. From, the smile campaign where our members recorded over 1,000 smiles as they give out breakfast treats to our local commuters, to bin in to win it and of course the Fairtrade breakfast!

Throughout March we have some very exciting things coming up. As some of you may know nominations for elections are officially open!

These will remain open until Thursday 24 March so if you are

looking at running in any of our elections don’t forget to get your name and manifesto in before that deadline. If you are looking at any of our student leader roles or a sabbatical role, please don’t hesitate to contact any of us, sabbatical officers, and we would be more than happy to talk you through the roles.

March marks the month of the beloved Varsity taking place on the Wednesday 30 March. This is a perfect day for all our members, if you play sport or not. The closing date for buying your tickets is on 18th March so please don’t forget and encourage your teams, housemates and social groups to be a part of such a brilliant day! If you want to know more about what varsity, come into the office or email Tom. If you have got this far, I hope you are pumped for all the amazing things we are doing and have coming up. If you would like to tell us what you think we have launched our annual membership survey. We would love to hear what you have to say to ensure we are always making life better for students at Bucks: bucksstudentsunion.org/ membershipsurvey Finally, through Union Council we have had some of our members ask us to update the membership around our manifestos when coming into office and to pull out some points and explain how we have been implementing these in the past 6 months. So keep an eye out on our website where we will outline and update you on all of this.

At BNU we are proud of our inclusive, international community in which all members are respected for who they are. We will not tolerate any form of harassment or discrimination, and any reported incidents will be investigated thoroughly.

The countdown for strive is on, with less than one month to go until our first in person Strive Festival.

Strive Festival is on Monday 4 April and is jam packed with a range of employers and training sessions to help you get ready for your career. We will have employers from across the industries available for you to meet and speak to about what they do, any job opportunities they have and tips and advice for you to get into your chosen industry!

It is never too early to start thinking about your career so whether you are in your first or final year, there will be something available on this date for you. STRIVE Festival will have different opportunities running all day to enhance your employability skills and put you in touch with your potential future employer.

Come along to the networking session in the morning and claim your free goody bag – the first 25 students to sign up get an extra gift then We have a range of training sessions throughout the afternoon for you to be able to enhance your CV for when you leave University. One of the sessions we have is Linked In and Networking, which is a key part of potentially getting a career in the industry you want after university. Having a LinkedIn profile is more important than ever, and we’ll help you to get yours set up and show you how to make the best of it! On top of that, we’ll teach you all about networking and how to build a personal brand that will get you noticed by employers and recruiters alike.

Strive Festival is a great opportunity for all students to enhance your employability and networking skills and of course it is all FREE, thanks to The Big Deal.

BSU ELECTIONS H1

It’s that time of year again when we dust off the voting booths and ballot boxes and start preparing for the Bucks Students’ Union annual elections. There are so many different leadership positions up for grabs, giving you so many opportunities to get involved and make a real change - but with so much on offer it can be a bit confusing to remember your Sabbatical Officers from your Student Trustees. Luckily, we’re on hand to give you all the insight you need into the #BSUElections and remind you why it’s so important to have your say.

What are the elections for?

Why are the elections important?

These elections decide the Union’s three Sabbatical Officers for the next academic year. The Sabbatical Officers are full-time members of Union staff who lead the direction of the Union and help deliver the highquality student experience we are so passionate about.

These three roles offer the opportunity to direct the work of the Students’ Union meaning you can implement changes you want to see.

These elections decide who will be the leaders of the your Students’ Union for the next academic year, so it’s incredibly important to have your say and vote for who you want to lead on your priorities and activity for the next academic year. During the elections, each candidate will produce a written manifesto that will outline what they would aim to achieve if elected into their chosen position.

Up for election is the President, the principal officer of the Union and responsible for setting the political direction of the Union and communication with all stakeholders.

The Vice President Education and Welfare (VPEW) is responsible for improving and enhancing the educational experience and welfare of all students at Bucks. Finally, the Vice President Student Involvement (VPSI) is responsible for improving the non-academic experience of all students at Bucks, whether that be through sports teams, societies, volunteering or the many others opportunities on offer.

Additionally, there are many part-time student leadership roles on offer for you to fulfil alongside your studies.

These include the Student Trustee elections, a unique opportunity to be part of the team driving the strategic direction of the Union as part of the Trustee Board.

The Executive Officer elections, who represent students who have unique experiences alongside being a student including International, BAME, Mature, LGBTQ+ and more. The NUS Delegate elections, with the opportunity to represent Bucks Students’ Union at the annual National Union of Students Conference.

Finally, we have Student Rep and Sports and Societies Committee elections. Student reps act as the voice for their class or group and help us understand the student experience, including any changes or good practice.

Sports and Societies Committees lead their club or society and include roles such as Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer.

Now you get to play judge. Which candidate best represents you and your interests? Who do you think can bring about the most effective change at Bucks? This is your opportunity to decide who those people should be, use your vote so we can act on behalf of students.

If you don’t vote you are missing out on making sure your voice is heard, which may impact the overall result of the election. As a group, Bucks students are the largest influencing force for affecting change within the Students’ Union and University. By voting, you can say that the changes being put in place are due to the contributions of your ideas and voice.

Why should I nominate myself?

Do you think you can help make student life at Bucks better? Can you campaign on students’ behalf to make sure their voice is heard? Can you lead your Students’ Union? If the answer is yes, then you should nominate yourself.

To nominate yourself, head to our elections hub and select your chosen role from the menu on the left. From there, log in with your Blackboard details and click ‘Stand in Election’. Follow the steps, add a photo and your manifesto – and you’re ready to go.

Nominations open on Monday 21 February and are open for a few week but make sure to nominate yourself before noon on Thursday 24 March.

So, what are you waiting for? Whether you’re intrigued about being an NUS Delegate, excited about the potential of being an Executive Officer, or swayed by a Sabbatical Officer position, it’s time to put yourself forward to lead your Students’ Union and start writing that manifesto.

Going for gold

Over the weekend of Saturday 19 – Sunday 20 February, 4 of our members travelled to Sheffield to compete in the BUCS Nationals.

We had Marli Jessops and David Corsy-Dewu compete in Athletics, Sophia Potter in Fencing, and Alicia Enslin in Swimming.

Marli Jessops had an incredible day, competing in the 60m hurdles.

After smashing the first heat, Marli went on to compete in the finals to bring back an incredible first place gold medal.

There’s so much more we could say about Marli’s weekend, but we’ve got a few words from the winner herself:

“I competed in the 60m hurdles, it was my first time representing the University and going to BUCS, however competing there at Sheffield the weekend before for my own nationals it was a whole different experience still. I won my heat comfortably in 8.43 seconds, while the rest of the girls all pbed into the 8.5s. I knew it was going to be a tense final from experience, not just for me, but the other competitors had a lot more in the bag despite a lot of competition heat and gassing up from the commentary. I performed well and winning in a PB of 8.28 seconds, only 0.05 seconds off the record set by my training partner that I’m going to break next time.

With this winning time, it makes me ranked 5th in the world and there’s still more to come for me next weekend at the British champs live on the BBC. Overall, it was a great experience, the venue, the hype, all the other students from different Universities came together was exciting stuff. I am very happy to come away being the BUCS 2022 national champion and looking forward to see what the next outdoor BUCS champs brings me.”

David Corsy-Dewu competed in the 60m sprint at BUCS and here’s how his weekend went...

“Having the experience to participate in the BUCS Championship was awesome.

Having had a challenging two years of on and off injuries, which disallowed me from participating in my sport freely, I am glad to be able to move and participate again.

The weather was worse than expected with Storm Eunice, however, the wind did not affect any of the sports as the BUCS Nationals were all held in world class indoor facilities. Having the opportunity to watch other athletes who represented our University was excellent, they did amazingly to perform and came out healthily, and even victorious for those who achieved their goals.

I look forward to representing the University again.”

We’re so unbelievably proud of all of our members who competed at BUCS Nationals this weekend, we know you’re all going to go on to achieve some amazing things.

Dance Dance Revolution

Dance Dance Revolution On Saturday 19 February 2022, Bucks Comp was held at Buckinghamshire New University in the Events Hall, and it was a great success! We welcomed 7 universities to Bucks, including Roehampton – our Varsity rivals!

Throughout the day, around 300 dancers competed in 11 different categories. The categories we accommodated were Novice Ballet, Advanced Ballet, Novice Tap, Advanced Tap, Novice Contemporary, Advanced Contemporary, Novice Jazz, Advanced Jazz, Wildcard, Novice Street and Advanced Street, as well as a freestyle battle. Bucks entered in 8 of these categories, and we left the competition with fabulous results. We left Bucks Comp 2022 with 5 trophies – 2nd Place Novice Ballet, 1st Place Advanced Tap, 3rd Advanced Contemp, 3rd Advanced Jazz and Best Team Spirit! Congratulations to all the choreographers who placed with their team.

A BIG THANK YOU… to our Bucks Comp Volunteers who helped tirelessly throughout the day and made the Committee’s job SO much easier, the choreographers for creating all the routines that were performed on the day, our three judges who judged the entire competition and whose jobs were very hard considering all the talent at the competition. Lastly a HUGE thank you to the BNU Dance Committee who organised the entirety of the day and made sure the day ran smoothly and was enjoyable for all.

Finally, BNU Dance would like to thank all the dancers who competed on the day, you are all super talented and the all the routines were amazing, and you should all be extremely proud of yourselves. Be ready for Bucks Comp 2023 next year – it’s going to be a good one!

We are halfway through our comp season with Surrey being our next one. Good luck to all the dancers competing there soon!

After Easter, once comp season is over, we will be focusing a lot more on volunteering and social events as well as our end of year show and awards ceremony, so keep your eyes peeled for any announcements!

Bin it to win it

Bin it, to win it!

As we find ourselves nearly halfway through a semester, Green Week is on the horizon, and we have decided to relaunch the Bin It to Win It campaign!

We did this as a union a few years ago and are at it again. Focusing this time on the importance of how to recycle things and where to do so. Some are obvious, cardboard, fashion and textiles and water bottles. However, some others not so much.

The main campaign will be to show what can and can’t be recycled. We will also be showing greener alternatives.

Buckinghamshire council offer 40% off some compost bins, just for living in Buckinghamshire if you’re looking to become greener fingered. Checking the packaging on food and toiletries will also help to point you in the right direction for disposing of waste. For example, lots of plastic bottles and cardboards have the ‘widely recyclable’ green symbol on the packaging to show they will be generally taken away at the curb side. However, other products such as batteries and water filters like BRITA can be taken to your local supermarket.

As a student myself I live as sustainably as I can on a budget. That being said, I’m not perfect, neither am I zero waste but I have made swaps suitable to me. For example, shampoo and conditioner bars and always

carrying a shopping bag with me. It is all about what is best for you and also not feeling guilty because you need to buy the plastic bottle because it is cheaper for you. The onus should never be on you as the consumer, we just need to add pressure to those companies who mass produce plastic.

This week I went into the Body Shop in High Wycombe and have noticed they have added a small refill station for shampoo and conditioner which is great if (as a student) you are becoming more aware of your waste and the plastics associated with cleaning products. They also provide a bin in the back of the store for more difficult items to recycle such as pumps, plastic pouches and pipettes, small bottles that are less than 50ml, lip gloss tubes and mascaras.

Keep an eye out on social media for green week events such as volunteering for Bucks New Usage and to enter competitions for prizes. This year we are doing a grand prize of an ultimate student sustainable kit including a reusable water bottle, reusable make up remover pads and shaving bar! This is for anyone that gets involved in our Bin it to Win it campaign that will be on Instagram. Don’t worry for those that haven’t got Instagram we will also be giving away a £50 LUSH voucher to a student that gets involved in any of our activities during Green Week.

Musical Theatre

We have had such a busy year so far; Christmas lights switch on was such a success and our ‘Tropicana Nights’ takeover with men’s rugby.

This was a fantastic night where everyone had a blast and we raised so much money for the RAG charities and future projects that we are working on.

As a society we are so happy that everyone attended and enjoyed themselves and we can’t wait until our next one. All year we have also loved fundraising for the nominated RAG charities. Most recently we held a bake sale with BNU Boxing society, and we were very glad by the outcome. For our next performance, we are preparing a little medley for year 3 dance and performance’s ‘We Are Now’ campaign events during March that are taking place on Tuesday 8 and Wednesday 23 at The Venue and Wycombe Arts Centre. Soon after these performances we will be starting to prepare for our end of year showcase. This will include and range of singing, dancing, acting, and all three together. Dates are still being finalised, but we will update everyone as soon as everything is set in place. As we have been all year so far, we are still welcoming new members to join our society, if you would like to join to find out more information you can message our Instagram page @bucksmtsociety or go on to the Students’ Union website.

Being a student ambassador

Student Ambassador Hello! I’m Joanna, a second-year student nurse who was recently chosen to represent Buckinghamshire New University as a Student Ambassador. Student Ambassadors are passionate about inspiring the next generation of students. I’ve also worked in the student union in a variety of roles, including student representation. My development at university has been aided by representation; I have gained confidence and learned valuable skills that will help me not only in university but also in my nursing career.

I applied to be a Student Ambassador because it would allow me to gain employability skills, have opportunities for personal growth, and be a part of the community at Bucks. I’d also like to represent the university and share my experience with prospective students at a variety of events to share my passion for nursing. It would also be beneficial if I could gain work experience and network with other students who share my interests.

However, I am currently a Student Representative for my nursing tutor group, and I am responsible for effectively listening to, collating and communicating the views of all the students I represent, as well as taking these views to meetings and to staff to start positive changes. Furthermore, I am currently a committee member of Bucks Nursing Society, where I was involved in re-launching the nursing society, but I doubt I would have had the confidence to do so without becoming a student representative. The position has given me a diverse set of skills, and it’s been enjoyable meeting new people and working as part of a team.

My favourite memory thus far is receiving my Gold accredited Student Representation recognition at the Union Awards in 2021; having set goals allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone and do things I would not have done without the support of the amazing representation team, they’re always willing to help and make me feel valued.

Join us for a talk on International Women’s day understanding how celebrating women’s achievements and increasing visibility, while calling out inequality, is key to today’s business success. This great FREE event will be aired live!

Another incredible FREE opportunity thanks to the Big Deal!

This session aims to give you the skills and confidence to spot the signs of Mental Health issues, offer first aid and guide someone towards getting the help they need. We won’t teach you how to become a therapist, but we will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and even potentially stop a crisis from happening. This course will differ from our usual mental health first aid as this will also cover children’s mental health needs and child safeguarding. For anyone looking to work with children, this is a must have on your CV.

Take some time out from your studies to enjoy this incredible FREE trip to Kew Gardens! Kew Gardens is a botanic garden in southwest London that houses the “largest and most diverse botanical and mycological collections in the world”.

BNU Boxing

BNU Boxing This year, Boxing Society has been working to prepare for some extremely exciting events for members to showcase their skills and compete in the ring. This year the committee has been working to organise a charity white collar fight night for RAG, as well as a fight against Roehampton for this year’s Varsity.

many of our members are training and working incredibly hard to earn a place on the fight line-up for the event. We also would like to openly invite and involve as many societies as possible on the event, with the potential for performances/showcases in between fights.

You might be thinking, how have we been working to prepare for these events? Every Thursday, the society meets at the SU, travels across by minibus to Warriors Fight Factory, which is a specialised boxing gym in High Wycombe. Each week we have an hour session where we are taken through intense fitness drills, technique lessons, and one of our member’s highlights: sparring! As all of our sessions are led by a qualified trainer, we are able to hold the sessions in a safe manner to accommodate different level of experiences.

We look forward to seeing you at Varsity and the fight night event!

We are a bunch of kind and friendly people who are learning the British Sign Language as we believe it is a great skill to have and it can help us create a more inviting and friendly environment in our university as well as our communities.

Election nominations are now open, and we are still looking for a treasurer, secretary and welfare liaison so be sure to stand in the elections!

We hold sessions where we learn the basics of BSL every two weeks and then attempt to put them into practice. We also hold various society socials where the members get to know each other and make new friends! The bigger socials we have had so far were a Halloween social and the Wycombe Christmas Lights.

It is a great opportunity to be part of something inclusive and help make learning sign language more easily accessible.

Right now we are organising a takeover with the Music Society which will be happening in May so stay tuned for more information. There will be a BSL and Music Society performances as well as an open mic if anyone would like to perform. We will also do a raffle with some fun prizes so definitely take part!

Starting to think about your career?

Buckinghamshire New University’s Student Opportunities and Career Success department have started a weekly programme of skills workshop to start preparing you for your career!

Run over Wednesday lunch times and each only lasting 30 minutes these are great ways to boost your skills and confidence in areas such as CV writing, interview skills and networking, without having to take too much time out of your day!

Having a LinkedIn profile is more important than ever, and we’ll help you to get yours set up and show you how to make the best of it! On top of that, we’ll teach you all about networking and how to build a personal brand that will get you noticed by employers and recruiters alike.

Nervous about your interview? Not sure how to prepare? Whether it’s a panel, group or a virtual interview you’ve got lined up, our workshop will help you to knock it out of the park! We’ll look at common questions, body language, how to structure your answers, and all sorts of other great advice.
