Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times and ranked second in the most recent survey in the fall of 2015.

All 27 Bison varsity teams easily met the NCAA’s Academic Performance Rate (APR) standards once again last year. In fact, 19 programs boast perfect scores in the four-year rolling average. Bucknell received 19 NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) National Recognition Awards, the second-highest total among all Division I institutions.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 140 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 441 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2014-15 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 319 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during the spring 2015 semester.

In addition to the 128 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 350 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including five in 2014-15.

A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model.

At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program.

BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its ninth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS & RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom.

With 18 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 25 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 128 Academic All-Americans in 45 years and 140 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 25 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model.

The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success.

The facility, which celebrated its 10th birthday in 2012-13, has enhanced each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and has greatly expanded the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes.

The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996.

One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities.

As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its new FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and brand new Bachman Golf Center; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Becker Field (softball); and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

bison back in title hunt in patriot league in 2016

TWO-TIME ALL-PATRIOT LEAGUE MIDDIE THOMAS FLIBOTTE Continuing the tradition cemented by Hallof-Fame coach Sid Jamieson before him, 11thyear Bucknell mentor Frank Fedorjaka has the Bison men’s lacrosse program in a great place.

Year in and year out Bucknell is expected to be a factor in chase for the championship in the Patriot League, which has become one of the nation’s top Division I lacrosse conferences.

This year should be no different. While there are some key graduation losses to overcome, the Bison bring back talent in all phases of the game in 2016, as they look to improve on last year’s 9-6 season that ended with a loss to Colgate in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals. Four of the nine wins came against top-20 opponents, and the team went 6-1 in one-goal games and 3-0 in overtime contests.

“Last year was an interesting year,” said Fedorjaka, who is 96-57 overall 42-22 against Patriot League competition as Bucknell’s head coach.

“We had some really big wins, but also some blowout losses that were unusual for us. We had some games where we gave up a lot of goals, and we are a program that prides itself on being one of the best defensive teams in the country.

We have worked really hard this offseason on getting back to that.”

A Bison defense that conceded 9.9 goals per game last season will have some new faces in 2016. Two-year starting goalie Sam Grinberg and First Team All-Patriot League defenseman Ben Kellar have graduated, but senior Preseason All-America long-stick defensive midfielder Alex Spring returns to lead a talented group.

At close defense, junior Mike Schiappa already has two years of starting experience under his belt and is a strong crease defender. Senior co-captain Eric Monfort, formerly an offensive and defensive midfielder, makes the transition to close defense this spring. He made the move in the fall to help alleviate some injury concerns, and it was not long before he had become one of the team’s best cover men. Sophomore Benny Borgognone, a transfer from Fairfield, is another

strong, quick defender who has grasped Fedorjaka’s intricate defensive scheme.

Junior Brad Dotson and sophomore Lukas Munoz have also started games for the Bison and are ready if called upon. Munoz took over a starting spot in the second game of the year and showed plenty of promise in seven games before going down with a season-ending knee injury in the Brown game. Dotson, one of the tallest players in the country at 6’7”, then jumped into the top three and also performed well.

“I like the makeup of our close defense unit,” said Fedorjaka. “There is good balance there, and everyone seems to have a different strength, which means they all complement each other well.”

Spring has become one of the best long-stick defensive midfielders in the country. He was an Honorable Mention Preseason All-American as well as a Preseason All-Patriot League selection.

SEASON PREVIEW An eighth-round draft pick of the MLL’s Florida Launch, Spring already ranks second on Bucknell’s career ground balls list (185) with a full season still to play.

“Alex is one of the best ground-ball guys I have ever seen,” praised Fedorjaka. “He has a good nose for the ball and is hugely important for us as a faceoff wing. Pound-for-pound he is the strongest player on our team. He has fantastic endurance, he knows our defense very well, and we are very happy with his leadership and work ethic.”

Sophomore Matt Gilray has many of the same attributes as Spring, and he has the potential to be just as effective in terms of coverage and winning ground balls on the faceoff wings. In fact, the team has dubbed the duo “Spring-Ray”.

Because Spring is in such good shape and rarely needs to come off the field, Gilray will also be playing with a short stick as a defensive middie.

The Oshawa, Ontario native is quite skilled with the short stick, having played a lot of box lacrosse at home in Canada.

Senior Mike Adelman, a former walk-on, has improved considerably over the last three years and will also see time as an LSM. The Bison will have plenty of game experience back in the short-stick defensive midfield rotation. Seniors Brock Ghelfi and co-captain Zach Henkhaus are both returning rotation guys, while junior Grayson Helm and sophomore Duke Repko are knocking on the door. Freshman Brad Landry is one of the fastest players on the team.

Breaking in a new goalie has been a rarity at Bucknell through the years. The team has utilized only five regular starters in the cage dating all the way back to 2000: Grinberg (2014-15), Kyle Feeney (2010-13), Nick Sciubba (2007-09), Matt Baran (2004-06) and Justin Sussman (2000-03).

Next in line could be freshman Christian Klipstein, who has impressed since the start of fall ball. The Califon, New Jersey native is the younger brother of Ryan Klipstein, a standout midfielder for the Bison from 2008-11. Another brother, Reaves, is currently a defenseman at Army.

Klipstein is being pushed hard by sophomore Brac McKee, who saw action in six games as Grinberg’s backup last year, and another first-year

“We have three really good goalies,” said Fedorjaka. “Consistency is a big key, and Christian has been very consistent for us. He is a great ball-stopper and seems to be mature above his years. He understands the defense and is vocal and confident.”

The unit that will be looking to alleviate some pressure from the defense is the faceoff group.

Faceoffs have been an issue for the Bison over the last two seasons, but Fedorjaka has a young group consisting of two sophomores and three freshmen that he feels could turn an area of weakness into a team strength.

Sophomores Jake Dunlop and Sam Hahn are the returnees. Hahn led the team with 150 attempts at the X, winning 65 as a rookie in 2015.

a .500 conversion rate. Freshmen Jarett Witzal, Jordy Elardo and Teddy Dumbauld are also in the mix.

“We want to be above 50 percent on faceoffs,” offered Fedorjaka. “It has been a bit of an Achilles heel for us the last two years, but I don’t think it will be this year. We have good competition there, and we have excellent wing players.”

Offensively, the Bison will have to replace last year’s team leaders in goals (Ryan Joseph), assists (David Dickson) and points (Dickson), but two-time All-Patriot Leaguer and team cocaptain Thomas Flibotte returns to anchor the top midfield line, and senior Sean Doyle and sophomore Will Sands are two of the league’s top attackmen.

Flibotte tallied 16 goals and four assists last season, and Fedorjaka says that the big, strong senior middie has diversified his game considerably. Senior Kyle Shanahan and junior Tommy O’Connor are likely to join Flibotte on the first midfield line, giving the Bison plenty of shooting ability from the flanks.

Fedorjaka also likes his midfield depth, as sophomore Sean O’Brien could also mix in with the first unit, and freshmen Reed Malas and Ryan Durkin appear ready to contribute as well.

Malas was listed No. 38 on Inside Lacrosse’s list of top first-year attackmen. Another freshman, Tom Smith, missed fall ball due to an injury, but he could be in contention for a rotation spot when healthy.

“The midfield might just be the strength of the team,” noted Fedorjaka. “Flibotte, Shanahan, O’Connor and O’Brien are horses. They are going to be able to draw slides and handle them well.”

Sands was the team’s No. 2 scorer with 42 points on 26 goals and 16 assists as a rookie last season, and his .448 shot percentage ranked 13th nationally. He will quarterback the offense from X. A proven finisher, Doyle has scored at least 24 goals in each of his first three seasons at Bucknell, and he enters his senior year with 77, including a number of clutch goals late in games.

Sophomore Connor O’Hara is expected to be the third attackman, replacing the graduated Alex Ryan on the crease.

Senior co-captain Shane Fee, juniors Quinn Collison and Nick Steinfeld, and freshman Marshall Dickson (David’s younger brother) give the Bison plenty of depth up front.

“We are looking for Will Sands to take command of the offense,” said Fedorjaka. “He had a great freshman year and is even better this year.

He makes others around him better. Sean Doyle has scored a lot of big goals here, and people have to account for him. I like our offense. There is the potential for a lot of goals from a lot of different guys.”

As the 2016 campaign nears, Fedorjaka is excited about his squad, but also cognizant of the depth and quality of the Patriot League. Teams like Loyola, Navy, Army, Colgate and Lehigh are established powers. Boston University has already made major strides entering its third year at the varsity level. Holy Cross earned a top-20 ranking for the very first time last year, and even Lafayette, picked at the bottom of the league, took the Bison right down to the wire in a 14-13 finish last season.

“We have had a very productive preseason so far, and I am very excited about our team chemistry,” said Fedorjaka. “There is a lot of energy and enthusiasm throughout the team, and it starts with our seniors. Any one of our seniors could easily have been a captain and done a great job.

Our leadership is strong, and that leads to a lot of optimism as the start of the season approaches.

“It’s going to come down to mental and physical toughness,” Fedorjaka continued. “We talked about wanting to be more consistent as a team and play well every single game. Mental and physical toughness is the answer to our consistency.”

2016 BUCKNELL MEN’S LACROSSE FRANK FEDORJAKA HEAD COACH 11th SEASON 135-88 overall, 96-57 at BU

After two stints as an assistant coach at Bucknell spanning nearly a decade, Frank Fedorjaka took over as head coach in 2006 when he succeeded longtime mentor Sid Jamieson. In 2011 Fedorjaka guided the team to its first Patriot League Tournament title and second NCAA Tournament appearance, and he has cemented Bucknell’s status as an annual Patriot League title contender and national top 20 program.

Fedorjaka became only the second head coach in Bucknell lacrosse history, following in the footsteps of Jamieson, the Bucknell Hall of Famer who founded the varsity lacrosse program in 1968.

In his 10 seasons since taking over for Jamieson, Fedorjaka has fashioned a stellar 96-57 (.627) record, including a 42-22 (.656) Patriot League ledger. That makes him the 13th-most successful active coach in Division I lacrosse. The Bison have won nine or more games in seven of his 10 seasons, including a program record 14 in 2011 and 12 in 2013.

Including a five-year stint as head coach at Franklin & Marshall from 1994-98, Fedorjaka has a 135-88 (.605) lifetime record.

In 2013, Fedorjaka’s squad achieved a No. 6 national ranking, the highest in program history, buoyed by a 9-8 upset of No. 2 Cornell in Ithaca in March. The team finished 12-4 and advanced to the Patriot League championship game before just missing an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament despite a final RPI ranking of 12.

In his first season at the helm, Fedorjaka led the Bison to a historic victory over No. 1 Maryland — the program’s first-ever victory over a top-ranked team — and another top-20 road win at Penn State later in the season. The victories really began to start pouring in during year No. 2, as the Bison went 11-4, including three top-20 wins, and came within one of the school record for wins in a season. Another 10-win season followed in 2008, and the Bison advanced all the way to the Patriot League championship game for the first time.

In 2009 Fedorjaka was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the first time after leading the Bison to a perfect 6-0 conference record and the Patriot League regular-season title. His team made it to the championship game for the second year in a row, this time dropping a one-goal heartbreaker to Navy.

In 2010, the Bison took second-ranked and eventual national champion Duke to overtime, and they again qualified for the postseason. Bucknell finished 8-6, with the six losses coming by a combined seven goals.

And then in 2011 the Bison finished 14-3, setting a new school record for wins in a season. They went 6-0 in the Patriot League for the second

time in three years and routed Lehigh and Colgate in the PL Tournament before entering the NCAA Tournament with a No. 7 national ranking, the highest in program history at the time. Bucknell nearly upset eventual national champion Virginia in the first round, leading for most of the game before falling 13-12 in overtime. Fedorjaka was rewarded with his second Patriot League Coach of the Year award.

Known throughout his career as one of the college game’s best defensive minds, Fedorjaka’s teams annually rank among the national leaders in scoring defense, man-down defense and riding efficiency. Bucknell ranked No. 2 nationally in scoring defense in 2007, and the Bison have ranked 11th or better five times in the last nine years.

In his first 10 years as head coach Fedorjaka has mentored 47 AllPatriot League players and eight All-Americans, including three-time AllAmerican Austin Winter. He has also coached four Patriot League Rookie of the Year selections, one Defensive Player of the Year and one Goalie of the Year. That goalie, Nick Sciubba, led the nation in save percentage and goals-against average in 2007. Five of Fedorjaka’s student-athletes have gone on to play professional lacrosse after graduation.

Fedorjaka rejoined the Bucknell lacrosse family after serving as head coach at Franklin & Marshall for five years. Fedorjaka served as an assistant coach at Bucknell for the 1992 and 1993 seasons before going to F&M. In Fedorjaka’s five seasons at F&M, the Diplomats compiled a 39-31 record. His 39 wins placed him in second on the school’s all-time lacrosse wins list.

In 1995 Fedorjaka was named the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s Division III Coach of the Year, after leading the Diplomats to a 12-3 record and an NCAA playoff berth. In addition to his responsibilities as men’s lacrosse coach, Fedorjaka also served as an assistant coach in football and women’s soccer during his tenure at F&M. Also while at F&M Fedorjaka served as the Chair to the Southern ECAC Lacrosse Committee in 1997 and 1998. He served on the USILA National Ranking Committee and NCAA Advisory Committee for Division III lacrosse.

A 1989 graduate of Hobart College, Fedorjaka was a starting long-stick midfielder on three NCAA Division III national championship teams. He was also a three-year starter at wide receiver for the Statesman football team, earning All-America honors in 1988. The Rochester, N.Y., native was named Hobart’s Athlete of the Year in 1989. During his career at Hobart, he held all reception records and remained the school’s all-time leading receiver until 2004. Fedorjaka began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for two years at Springfield College (Mass.).

2016 BUCKNELL MEN’S LACROSSE JOE CONNER JR. ASSISTANT COACH 7th SEASON Joe Conner Jr. is in his seventh season on the Bucknell men’s lacrosse staff, and his fifth in the No. 1 assistant position, where he serves as offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator.

In 2014, Conner’s recruiting efforts were displayed by Bucknell’s first-ever top-20 recruiting class according to Inside Lacrosse magazine. This class was ranked 13th in the country as a whole, and had three recruits ranked in Inside Lacrosse’s Power 100 Recruit Rankings; which is the most Bucknell has ever had in a recruiting class.

In 2014, Bucknell’s extra man unit scored at an impressive rate of 41.5% for the season. The Bison offense had two players receive All-Patriot League honors in 2015: first-team midfielder David Dickson, who became a rare four-time all-league honoree, and second-team middie Ryan Joseph.

In 2013, Conner’s second season as offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator, the Bison offense averaged 10.6 goals per game. They led the Patriot League in goals per game game at the end of the regular season and finished No. 2 after the completion of league tournament play. The Bison offense had one of the most balanced scoring attacks in the country with one 50-point scorer (David Dickson), two 40-point scorers (Sean Doyle and Chase Bailey), one 39-point scorer (Todd Heritage), one 30-point scorer (Thomas Flibotte), one 20-point scorer (Peter Burke) and one 19-point scorer (Brock Ghelfi).

In 2013, Conner’s recruiting efforts were displayed by the play of several key freshmen during the season. The recruiting class was cited by Inside Lacrosse as one of the best in the nation, and the Bison had three freshmen make Inside Lacrosse’s list top 25 freshmen, which was more than any other team in the nation.

In 2013, Conner coached Patriot League Rookie of the Year Sean Doyle and First Team All-Patriot League midfielders Thomas Flibotte and Dickson. Dickson shattered Bucknell and Patriot League single-season assist records with 48, and he would go on to earn Third Team All-America honors.

Conner also coached 2012 graduate Billy Eisenreich, who played pro lacrosse for the Chicago Outlaws. Eisenreich was a Third Team All-America attackman in 2012 after playing his first three years at midfield.

In Conner’s first season as the offensive coordinator in 2012, the Bison finished the season with the No. 1 shooting percentage in the nation. The Bison offense also performed at historically high levels during the 2012 season. In that season the Bison offense set a record by scoring the most goals it ever has in a single season with 179, as well as set team records for assists (108) and points (287). Inside Lacrosse’s Pace Statistics for Adjusted Offensive Efficiency Rating determined that the Bison had one of the most efficient offensive units in recent Division 1 lacrosse history throughout most of the 2012 season.

Conner was the assistant lacrosse coach at Mount St. Mary’s for two years before coming to Bucknell. At Mount St. Mary’s, Conner helped coach the Mount to a 5-3 conference record and a No. 2 seed in the MAAC playoffs, the Mount’s first conference playoff appearance in two years. He served as recruiting coordinator, and in his final season with The Mount he coached the defense, helping them to a No. 9 national ranking in goals allowed.

Conner is a 2007 graduate of Mount St. Mary’s and received his M.B.A. degree with a management concentration from The Mount as well in May of 2009. During the summer of 2009, Conner worked at Wells Fargo Financial as a Credit Manager before being hired by Bucknell in September of 2009. As a student-athlete, he played at Binghamton University for three years before transferring to Mount St. Mary’s to finish his playing career and pursue his coaching career. He was a midfielder at Binghamton and then was moved to attack when he transferred to Mount St. Mary’s.

A native of Ijamsville, Md., he played both lacrosse and football at Urbana High School. He was a high school All-American in lacrosse and started at quarterback on a record-setting football team that won four straight state championships and carried a 50-game winning streak. He currently holds the Frederick County Maryland high school touchdown pass record with 28 in a single season. Joe is the son of Joe Conner Sr. and Ximena Conner, and he has two younger brothers (Jason and Justin) and a younger sister (Jackie). He lives in Lewisburg with his wife Erin, their son Ethan, and their newborn daughter Gia.

COACHING STAFF NICK MARKS ASSISTANT COACH 5th SEASON Former Bison men’s lacrosse standout Nick Marks returned to his alma mater in 2012 as an assistant coach on Frank Fedorjaka’s staff, and in 2014 he began serving as the team’s defensive coordinator. A four-year starting midfielder at Bucknell, Marks has remained very active in the sport of lacrosse since graduating in 2008 with a degree in classics and history.

Under Marks’ watch, the 2015 Bison had several individuals honored for their defensive work, the team ranked in the top 20 nationally in caused turnovers for the second year in a row, and the entire unit held strong in victories over Brown and Loyola, which featured two of the most powerful offenses in the country. Defenseman Ben Kellar and long-stick defensive midfielder Alex Spring were both First Team All-Patriot League selections, and goalie Sam Grinberg won a Patriot League Goalie of the Week Award in addition to Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.

Marks also mentors the Bison faceoff specialists, and the team showed significant improvement in that area in 2015, and faceoff success was a major factor in key Patriot League wins over Loyola and Navy.

In 2014 the Bison defense ranked seventh nationally in caused turnovers per game (9.47) and 14th in scoring defense (8.67). That year, Marks helped senior Jackson Place become a Major League Lacrosse draft selection after earning AllAmerica and All-Patriot League honors while ranking second in the nation in caused turnovers at 2.71 per game.

Grinberg in 2014 ranked eighth nationally in save percentage (.563) and 10th in goals-against average (8.52) in his first season as the full-time starter.

In his first two seasons back with the Bison, Marks worked closely with the goalies and faceoff men, and he mentored all-conference players at both positions. Ryan Gutowski graduated in 2013 ranked third in program history in faceoff wins and sixth in ground balls. He was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection in 2013.

Kyle Feeney ‘13 ranked fourth in team history in saves and goals-against average.

He was a First Team All-Patriot League pick in 2012, and he was an eighth-round draft pick by the MLL’s Charlotte Hounds. In addition, Marks helped prep Grinberg to come off the bench for big relief wins over Drexel in 2012 and Colgate in 2013, and then he helped Grinberg transition into the starting role in 2014.

Prior to returning to Bucknell, Marks served as head varsity lacrosse coach and assistant varsity football coach at Lake Zurich (Ill.) High School. The football team reached the Class 7A state championship game in 2011. While coaching, Marks also worked as a sales consultant for Harrow Sports and served as director of lacrosse operations for Team One Lacrosse, where he helped identify and recruit players for Illinois elite teams.In 2008-09 he was program director for Lacrosse America.

Marks enjoyed a terrific playing career at Bucknell. He played in 57 career games over four seasons and finished with 37 goals and nine assists for 46 points.

He captained the 2008 team that finished 10-5 and reached the Patriot League championship game for the first time. Bucknell compiled a 21-9 record during his junior and season seasons and went 36-21 over his four-year career, making him part of the program’s winningest class at the time.

In 2006, Marks was named Bucknell’s Most Improved Player, and he also earned the team’s Iron Bison Award. In the classroom Marks was a Dean’s List student and a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. He was later a 2008 supplemental draft pick of Major League Lacrosse’s Chicago Machine, a 2012 supplemental draft pick by the Ohio Machine and was also member of the Chicago Shamrox of the National Lacrosse League.

Marks is engaged to Laurel Kopecky, Bucknell’s assistant director of recreation services.

Justin Sussman ’03

Brown was a four-year starter, playing both midfield and defense during a terrific career that saw him become Bucknell’s third Division I AllAmerican. He was a First Team All-East Coast Conference defenseman in 1982, then as a senior he moved to midfield and tallied 30 goals and 15 assists, repeating as a first team pick and earning an honorable mention All-America nod as well.

Cara remains the all-time points leader in Bucknell and Patriot League history with 249 points on 111 goals and 138 assists. As a junior, Cara led the nation in scoring with 78 points on 38 goals and 40 assists. He was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year as a junior and senior, and he was also the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2002. He earned All-PL honors all four years, and he was picked as an Honorable Mention All-American in 2004 and a Third Team All-American in 2005.

Thomas E. Cusick ’87

A three-time All-East Coast Conference selection in men’s lacrosse, Cusick earned honorable mention All-America honors as a junior and was selected for the North-South Senior All-Star game in 1987. He ranked in the top five in the nation in scoring as a junior and senior, and was Bucknell’s all-time leading scorer when he graduated.

Hugh Donovan ’96

Donovan captained the 1996 Bison squad that finished a perfect 12-0, captured the Patriot League title and earned a No. 9 national ranking.

Donovan was named PL Defensive Player of the Year that season, and he is considered to be one of the top defensemen ever to wear the Orange & Blue. He earned Honorable Mention All-America honors in after helping the Bison rank No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense (6.25).

C. Edwin Farver ’69

Co-captain of Bucknell’s first two varsity lacrosse teams and the 196869 basketball team, Farver was a first team Little All-America and MVP in the Middle Atlantic Conference in lacrosse in 1969. He played in the North-South All-Star Game.

Starting goalie for the lacrosse team for four straight years. He had a terrific senior campaign, earning All-ECC First Team and HM All-America honors. Sanders turned in several stellar performances in goal, including a 29-save outing vs. Army and 22 vs. Delaware that season. He held Bucknell records for saves in season (201) and a career (664), and still owns the mark for saves in a game (34).

Sussman was one of the top goalies ever to play for the Bison men’s lacrosse squad. He backstopped Bucknell to four straight Patriot League championships and was a two-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, a three-time All-Patriot League pick and an Honorable Mention All-American in 2003. Sussman graduated with a stellar .628 career save percentage, and his .664 save percentage in 2003 was just .003 off the national lead.

Ralph Turri ’76

Turri was an outstanding two-sport athlete at Bucknell in the mid-1970s.

He was a three-year starting linebacker on the football team and a twoyear starting midfielder in lacrosse, and he served as team captain in both sports. Turri led the 1974 football team with 162 tackles and was named to the Associated Press All-Pennsylvania First Team that year. As a junior, Turri was named to the All-East Coast Conference lacrosse squad.

Peter W. von Hoffman ’79

A four-time All-East Coast Conference lacrosse player and twice an AllAmerica selection, vonHoffman set numerous school scoring records, was twice co-captain, was ECC Most Valuable Player in 1979 and was selected for the North-South Game.

Justin W. Zackey ’94

One of the most prolific scorers in Bison annals, Zackey still holds the Bucknell records for goals in a season (63) and career (138) and points in a season (79 in 1993). A two-time Honorable Mention All-American who led the nation in goals per game (4.20) in 1993, Zackey was a First Team All-Patriot League pick in 1993 and 1994 and was a two-time Academic All-American.

Sidney I. Jamieson

The head coach of the Bison lacrosse program from its varsity inception in 1968 until his retirement after the 2005 season, Jamieson is one of the legends of college lacrosse. He led the Bison to seven league titles in three different conferences and ranked 10th all-time with 242 wins.

He coached 17 All-Americans and was named USILA Coach of the Year after guiding Bucknell to a 12-0 record in 1996. In 2005 he received the prestigious Spirit of Tewaaraton Award.

Louis L. Kissling, Jr. ’71

Twice an All-American in lacrosse, Kissling co-captained his senior team, set season and career scoring records, was Most Valuable Player in the Middle Atlantic Conference in 1971, and was selected for the NorthSouth All-Star Game.

James W. McKee ’69

One of the founding members of the varsity lacrosse program at Bucknell.

McKee was honored as a second team College Division All-American and All-Mid-Atlantic Conference selection. He was a co-captain as a senior and graduated as the leading goal-scorer at Bucknell.

chris cara newest lax hall of famer The men’s lacrosse program now has 13 members of the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame after the induction of Chris Cara ‘05 on Oct. 23, 2015. Cara was elected as part of the 37th Hall of Fame Class.

The Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1979 to honor the very best in the history of Bison athletics. This year’s induction brings to 245 the number of outstanding student-athletes, coaches, administrators and friends of Bucknell whose contributions are forever preserved in the Hall of Fame.

Thirty top-tier high school and club lacrosse teams will be showcased for college coaches and scouts. Conveniently held on the campus of Bucknell University, the Bison Brawl Team Lacrosse Camp provides the ultimate team competition, multiple synthetic turf fields, illuminated stadium venue, ample parking, dormitory facilities, hotels, hospitality and exposure to the college admissions and athletic recruitment process — not specific to Bucknell University.

The camp is held on Bucknell University’s 450-acre campus in the heart of the beautiful Susquehanna River Valley in Lewisburg, Pa. Bucknell’s campus is located adjacent to Rt. 15, just six miles south of I-80 and 55 miles north of Harrisburg, Pa. Campers compete in the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. With its recently-installed FieldTurf, it is one of the finest venues in all of college lacrosse. The camp also utilizes the newly renovated West Fields complex, which also offers a first-class atmosphere for lacrosse at any level.

The camp provides state-of-the-art facilities and accommodations for a competitive lacrosse atmosphere. All teams will have a chance to work on team concepts and various aspects of team play as the week progresses. Camp staff and referees help provide the most realistic, game-like experience possible. This is a unique chance to grow and learn as a team while continuing to develop all the important individual skills necessary to play at the college level.

My top priority as a head coach is to be sure that our program has a positive image on campus, in the community and in the lacrosse world. It is important to me that our student-athletes give back to the University, the community, and to the sport they love, and that these three entities are better with Bucknell Lacrosse than without.

That said, I am proud to announce this year’s Community Service Plan. Our goal is to contribute 24 hours of community service The U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne per team member. That’s 42 student-athletes Division, Co. A, 506th Regiment x 24 hours each = over 1,000 hours! We will be shows off care packages sent to Iraq by the Bison lacrosse team. contributing to many, many causes again this year. A Bison Never Forgets – The brainchild of 2011 graduates John Collett and Ryan Klipstein, Bison Lax raises funds to send care packages to former college lacrosse players now serving overseas in the armed forces. Collett and Klipstein earned the 2010 Patriot League Sportsmanship Award for their efforts. Americans Supporting Americans – Our participation in this program has caught national attention and has sparked a number of universities, programs, churches, classrooms, etc., to join. We were the first university and certainly the first athletic team to participate in this wonderful program that supports U.S. troops overseas. Best Buddies – One or two players each year enroll in the Best Buddies program, where they have an opportunity to build a relationship with a physically or mentally handicapped person in our area. Harvest Soup Kitchen – Team members will help serve at various times. Ronald McDonald House – “Grab a Tab” fundraising program. Colleges against Cancer – Team took part in a 5K run on campus. AIDS Walk – Team took part in a 1-hour AIDS walk in Gerhard Fieldhouse. Day Care – Visit Sunflower Day Care facility and read to young children. Adopt-A-Highway – Clean up highway along Stein Lane in Lewisburg.

ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University.

The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell.

The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell.

bucknell bison leadership academy As Bison Athletics seeks to create a comprehensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an important element of the complete student-athlete experience is participation in an elite leadership development program designed to identify, develop, challenge and support student-athletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life.

The Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy was launched in August 2011 with the goal of delivering programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. Leadership Academy programming has evolved and expanded throughout its first three years, and much more is planned in 2014-15.

Approximately 60 student-athletes participate in Leadership Academy programming each year. Representing the men’s lacrosse team in 2015-16 is Zach Henkhaus.

Goals for the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy include: • Identify and develop high potential leaders in their sophomore or junior years • Help young best athletes become best leaders • Create strong leaders by example and set the stage for developing vocal leaders • Build a strong peer support network for aspiring leaders • Develop leaders who support and learn from current team captains/leaders • Practice leading self, their class, and below • Succession Planning — smoothly replace graduating leaders • Encourage veteran leaders to step up and be vocal leaders • Establish a solid, cooperative and ongoing partnership with the coaching staff • Teach and apply the insights and skills necessary to be a responsible and respected leader • Provide veteran leaders with ongoing coaching and support as they tackle the tough issues of team leadership • Provide veteran leaders with a solid peer network for guidance and support • Provide veteran leaders with highly marketable leadership skills for a lifetime
