Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2011.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 21-year history of the affiliation, including 13 of the last 14 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2010-11. It was the 14th straight year and the 17th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2010-11, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, women’s rowing and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 11 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2011, Bucknell ranked No. 4 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 121 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 121.

A total of 421 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2010-11 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 259 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2011.

In addition to the 121 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 314 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 21 more in 2010-11.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

With six Patriot League championships in 2010-11, Bucknell has now earned 87 crowns in 21 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 93 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 511 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell Bison Athletics

A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model.

At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice.

LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this “Leadership Summit” is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities THE KENNETH LANGONE ATHLETICS and RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom.

With 17 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 21 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 121 Academic All-Americans in 41 years and 122 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 21 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model.

The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success.

The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes.

The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996.

One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities.

As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and brand new indoor instructional golf center; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Becker Field (softball); and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

2012 Season Preview Going into last season, Bucknell head coach Frank Fedorjaka constantly preached improved mental and physical toughness in all of the team’s preparations. Coming off a 2010 season in which all five of their regular-season losses came by just one goal, the added focus on mental and physical toughness clearly paid dividends last spring, as the Bison went 14-3, completed a sweep of the Patriot League regular season and tournament titles, and came within minutes of knocking off eventual national champion Virginia in the NCAA Tournament.

Fedorjaka has many familiar faces back on the field on 2012, and his message to this year’s team is very similar: be tough-minded and play smart lacrosse for all 60 minutes. And while Bucknell’s postseason performance last year has resulted in some positive press and a major bullseye on its back heading into this season, the Bison feel like they have some unfinished business left to do after letting a fourth-quarter lead get away in that Virginia game.

“We still have a lot to prove,” said Fedorjaka, the reigning Patriot League Coach of the Year. “Ultimately our goal is to win a national championship someday. The sting of last year’s finish is still there, which I think is a healthy thing to have. We learned last year what it means to be mentally and physically tough, and that is still our motto. When you are hungry and have a chip on your shoulder and also have talent in place, that is a good combination.”

Ranked No. 12 in the USILA preseason coaches’ poll, the Bison return the core of their offense in 2012, although they were dealt a blow in the fall when senior co-captain and returning Honorable Mention All-American midfielder Charlie Streep tore an ACL in practice. Streep, who scored a career-high 28 goals last season and has 104 total points in his career, is hoping to return in March.

While the Bison did lose top scorer Ryan Klipstein (32-21-53) and talented middie Mike Danylyshyn (18-18-36) to graduation, they have plenty of production back on the offensive end of the field for first-year offensive coordinator Joe Conner. Heading the list is senior Billy Eisenreich (18-15-33), who had a breakout season in 2011 even though he missed four games with a shoulder injury.

Fedorjaka calls Eisenreich, “one of the top five players I have ever coached,” and this year he moves from midfield to attack, where he will

quarterback the offense.

Eisenreich will team up with sophomore Todd Heritage (27-7-24) and junior Chase Bailey (16-9-25) up front. Heritage was one of the top rookies in the Patriot League a year ago and is a terrific finisher, as is Bailey, who scored a team-high six extra-man goals last season.

“Those three guys complement each other very well,” said Fedorjaka. “We have a nice combination of lefty and righty finishers, and they are all versatile players. If you could draw up your ideal attack unit, this is what it would look like. I expect our attack to have a lot of points this year.”

The offensive midfield will have a bit of a new look at the start of the year, with the injury to Streep along with Eisenreich’s move to attack. But Fedorjaka feels that this year’s midfield will be much deeper than last, with as many as eight players in the mix early on.

The most experienced of the group is senior Nick Gantsoudes (18-2-20), who has played in all but one game over the last three seasons.

Gantsoudes set a career scoring high in 2011.

Sophomore Peter Burke (10-7-17) scored some big goals for the Bison last season, and he is expected to start on the first line along with Gantsoudes and freshman Joe Kearney, a quick, hard-shooting middie from Mahwah, N.J. Also pushing for time are junior Billy Mattimore, sophomore Tom Black and freshman David Dickson.

On paper, it appears that Bucknell took a hit on close defense with the graduation of standouts Alex Lyons and John Collett, but all along Fedorjaka has been grooming some younger players who should step right in.

Junior Mike Huffner is the lone returnee from last year’s trio, and he is a good one. Huffner earned First Team All-Patriot League honors last season and was also named to the PL All-Tournament Team.

Sophomore Jackson Place saw plenty of action as a fourth defenseman and longstick defensive middie last season, and he will jump into a starting role this year. And senior Matt Spagnoli, a reserve for the last three years, is set to make his starting debut in 2012. Another potential starter, freshman Ben Kellar, injured a knee in the fall and will miss the season.

Seniors Jason Neithamer and John Scally head up what should be a terrific rotation of poles. Both have been regulars from day one at Bucknell. Neithamer has also played some

close defense and was a Second Team AllPatriot League selection there in 2010. Scally is also Bucknell’s top wing man on faceoffs.

At short-stick defensive midfield, Fedorjaka has had to do some shuffling after losing all-time ground ball and faceoff wins leader Jake Clarke, along with Jason Foreit and Jordan Nies, to graduation. Senior Andrew Van Valkenburg returns to that role, where he will be joined by sophomore Sam McDonough and freshman Andrew Dempsey. Converted offensive middies Kyle O’Keefe and Wills Miller, both juniors, also figure to garner plenty of action there.

In goal, Bucknell returns Second Team All-Patriot League selection Kyle Feeney, a junior who will already be in his third season as a starter for the Bison. Feeney led the Patriot League and ranked sixth nationally with a 7.24 goals-against average last season.

“We have a lot of depth at long-stick defensive middie, and we have some very versatile guys on close defense,” said Fedorjaka. “We lost our top three short-stick guys, so that was a priority to shore up that unit.

And of course Kyle Feeney will have a lot to do with our success on defense. If he plays up to his potential, he can be one of the better goalies in the country this season.”

At the faceoff X, the Bison will have to replace one of their best ever in Clarke, but junior Ryan Gutowski is back after backing up Clarke for the last two seasons. Gutowski actually had the best faceoff percentage (.527) on the team last year, winning 48 of 91. Promising freshman Gavin Sullivan will also take draws.

Bucknell has a difficult non-conference schedule this spring, starting with a home game against Delaware on Feb. 11. The Bison will also play UMass, Villanova, Penn State, Penn, Drexel, Albany, Robert Morris and Hobart out of league. Bucknell was the unanimous preseason No. 1 pick in the Patriot League poll, and conference play comes up quickly with a key road game at Navy on March 3.

“We have to be able to handle the high rankings and not pay any attention to that,” said Fedorjaka. “Our leadership has been very good. I’m happy with our overall work ethic, and with how our seniors have demanded that from the younger guys. I think this is a group that really wants to work hard and enjoy the journey along way.”

Bison Coaching Staff FRANK FEDORJAKA HEAD COACH 7th SEASON

Frank Fedorjaka was picked as the 2009 and 2011 Patriot League Coach of the Year.

After two stints as an assistant coach at Bucknell spanning nearly a decade, Frank Fedorjaka took over as head coach in 2006 when he succeeded longtime mentor Sid Jamieson. Fedorjaka has led the Bison to two of the last three Patriot League regular-season titles, and in 2011 guided the team to its first Patriot League Tournament title and second NCAA Tournament appearance.

Fedorjaka became only the second head coach in Bucknell lacrosse history, following in the footsteps of Jamieson, the Bucknell Hall of Famer who founded the varsity lacrosse program in 1968.

In his first season at the helm, Fedorjaka led the Bison to a historic victory over No. 1 Maryland — the program’s first-ever victory over a top-ranked team — and another top-20 road win at Penn State later in the season. The victories really began to start pouring in during year No. 2, as the Bison went 11-4, including three top-20 wins, and came within one of the school record for wins in a season. Another 10-win season followed in 2008, and the Bison advanced all the way to the Patriot League championship game for the first time.

In 2009 Fedorjaka was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the first time after leading the Bison to a perfect 6-0 conference record and the Patriot League regular-season title. His team made it to the championship game for the second year in a row, this time dropping a one-goal heartbreaker to Navy.

In 2010, the Bison took second-ranked and eventual national champion Duke to overtime, and they again qualified for the postseason. Bucknell finished 8-6, with the six losses coming by a combined seven goals.

And then in 2011 the Bison finished 14-3, setting a new school record for wins in a season. They went 6-0 in the Patriot League for the second time in three years and routed Lehigh and Colgate in the PL Tournament before entering the NCAA Tournament with a No. 7 national ranking, the highest in program history. Bucknell nearly upset eventual national champion Virginia in the first round, leading for most of the game before falling 13-12 in overtime. Fedorjaka was rewarded with his second Patriot League Coach of the Year award.

Known throughout his career as one of the college game’s best defensive minds, Fedorjaka’s teams annually rank among the national leaders in scoring defense, man-down defense and riding efficiency.

In his first six years as head coach he has mentored eight All-Patriot League defensemen, including 2011 All-American Alex Lyons, and three all-conference goalies. One of those goalies, Nick Sciubba, led the nation in save percentage and goals-against average in 2007. He has also coached three-time All-American Austin Winter, and the 2009 team produced a school-record six First Team All-Patriot League honorees.

Three of Fedorjaka’s student-athletes have gone on to play professional lacrosse after graduation.

Fedorjaka rejoined the Bucknell lacrosse family after serving as head coach at Franklin & Marshall for five years. Fedorjaka served as an assistant coach at Bucknell for the 1992 and 1993 seasons before going to F&M. In Fedorjaka’s five seasons at F&M, the Diplomats compiled a 3931 record. His 39 wins placed him in second on the school’s all-time lacrosse wins list.

In 1995 Fedorjaka was named the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s Division III Coach of the Year, after leading the Diplomats to a 12-3 record and an NCAA playoff berth. In addition to his responsibilities as men’s lacrosse coach, Fedorjaka also served as an assistant coach in football and women’s soccer during his tenure at F&M. Also while at F&M Fedorjaka served as the Chair to the Southern ECAC Lacrosse Committee in 1997 and 1998. He served on the USILA National Ranking Committee and NCAA Advisory Committee for Division III lacrosse.

A 1989 graduate of Hobart College, Fedorjaka was a starting longstick midfielder on three NCAA Division III national championship teams.

He was also a three-year starter at wide receiver for the Statesman football team, earning All-America honors in 1988. The Rochester, N.Y., native was named Hobart’s Athlete of the Year in 1989. During his career at Hobart, he held all reception records and remained the school’s all-time leading receiver until 2004. Fedorjaka began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for two years at Springfield College (Mass.).

Fedorjaka and his wife, Kathy live in Winfield, Pa., with their 14-yearold son Matthew and 10-year-old daughter Jamie.

JOE CONNER JR. ASSISTANT COACH 3rd SEASON

Joe Conner Jr. is in his third season on the Bucknell men’s lacrosse staff, and in 2011-12 he will be moving up to the No. 1 assistant position and offensive coordinator. Connor was the assistant lacrosse coach at Mount St. Mary’s for two years before coming to Bucknell.

At Mount St. Mary’s, Conner helped coach the Mount to a 5-3 conference record and a No. 2 seed in the MAAC playoffs, the Mount’s first conference playoff appearance in two years. He served as recruiting coordinator, and in his final season with The Mount he coached the defense, helping them to a No. 9 national ranking in goals allowed.

Conner is a 2007 graduate of Mount St. Mary’s and received his M.B.A. from The Mount as well in May of 2009. As a student-athlete, he played at Binghamton University for three years before transferring to Mount St. Mary’s to finish his playing career and pursue his coaching career. He was a midfielder at Binghamton and then was moved to attack when he transferred to Mount St. Mary’s.

A native of Ijamsville, Md., he played both lacrosse and football at Urbana High School. He was a high school All-American in lacrosse and started at quarterback on a record-setting football team that won four straight state championships and carried a 50-game winning streak. His father, Joe Conner Sr., formerly coached both the football and lacrosse teams at Urbana.

NICK MARKS

ASSISTANT COACH 1st SEASON Former Bison men’s lacrosse standout Nick Marks has returned to his alma mater where he begins his first season as an assistant coach on Frank Fedorjaka’s staff. A four-year starting midfielder at Bucknell, Marks has remained very active in the sport of lacrosse since graduating in 2008 with a degree in classics and history.

A year ago Marks served as head varsity lacrosse coach and assistant varsity football coach at Lake Zurich (Ill.) High School. The football team reached the Class 7A state championship game last season. While coaching, Marks also worked as a sales consultant for Harrow Sports and served as director of lacrosse operations for Team One Lacrosse, where he helped identify and recruit players for Illinois elite teams. In 2008-09 he was program director for Lacrosse America.

Marks enjoyed a terrific playing career at Bucknell. He played in 57 career games over four seasons and finished with 37 goals and nine assists for 46 points. He captained the 2008 team that finished 10-5 and reached the Patriot League championship game for the first time. Bucknell compiled a 21-9 record during his junior and season seasons and went 36-21 over his four-year career. In the classroom Marks was a Dean’s List student and a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

Marks has been selected in a pair of Major League Lacrosse supplemental drafts, first in 2008 by the Chicago Machine and then in December of 2011 by the Ohio Machine. He was also a member of the Chicago Shamrox of the National Lacrosse League.

BUCKNELL ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME

A four-time All-East Coast Conference lacrosse player and twice an All-America selection, vonHoffman set numerous school scoring records, was twice co-captain, was ECC Most Valuable Player in 1979 and was selected for the North-South Game.

Rodney Brown ’83

Brown was a four-year starter, playing both midfield and defense during a terrific career that saw him become Bucknell’s third Division I All-American. He was a First Team All-East Coast Conference defenseman in 1982, then as a senior he moved to midfield and tallied 30 goals and 15 assists, repeating as a first team pick and earning an honorable mention All-America nod as well.

Justin W. Zackey ’94

One of the most prolific scorers in Bison annals, Zackey still holds the Bucknell records for goals in a season (63) and career (138) and points in a season (79 in 1993). A two-time Honorable Mention All-American who led the nation in goals per game (4.20) in 1993, Zackey was a First Team All-Patriot League pick in 1993 and 1994 and was a two-time Academic All-American.

Thomas E. Cusick ’87

A three-time All-East Coast Conference selection in men’s lacrosse, Cusick earned honorable mention All-America honors as a junior and was selected for the North-South Senior All-Star game in 1987. He ranked in the top five in the nation in scoring as a junior and senior, and was Bucknell’s all-time leading scorer when he graduated.

Hugh Donovan ’96

Donovan captained the 1996 Bison squad that finished a perfect 12-0, captured the Patriot League title and earned a No. 9 national ranking. Donovan was named PL Defensive Player of the Year that season, and he is considered to be one of the top defensemen ever to wear the Orange & Blue. He earned Honorable Mention All-America honors in after helping the Bison rank No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense (6.25).

C. Edwin Farver ’69

Co-captain of Bucknell’s first two varsity lacrosse teams and the 1968-69 basketball team, Farver was a first team Little All-America and MVP in the Middle Atlantic Conference in lacrosse in 1969. He played in the NorthSouth All-Star Game.

Sidney I. Jamieson

The head coach of the Bison lacrosse program from its varsity inception in 1968 until his retirement after the 2005 season, Jamieson is one of the legends of college lacrosse. He led the Bison to seven league titles in three different conferences and ranked 10th all-time with 242 wins. He coached 17 All-Americans and was named USILA Coach of the Year after guiding Bucknell to a 12-0 record in 1996. In 2005 he received the prestigious Spirit of Tewaaraton Award.

Louis L. Kissling, Jr. ’71

Twice an All-American in lacrosse, Kissling co-captained his senior team, set season and career scoring records, was Most Valuable Player in the Middle Atlantic Conference in 1971, and was selected for the NorthSouth All-Star Game.

James W. McKee ’69

One of the founding members of the varsity lacrosse program at Bucknell. McKee was honored as a second team College Division All-American and All-Mid-Atlantic Conference selection. He was a co-captain as a senior and graduated as the leading goal-scorer at Bucknell.

Thomas H. Sanders ’79

Hugh Donovan ‘96 is the latest men’s lacrosse entry in the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame.

Starting goalie for the lacrosse team for four straight years. He had a terrific senior campaign, earning All-ECC First Team and HM All-America honors. Sanders turned in several stellar performances in goal, including a 29-save outing vs. Army and 22 vs. Delaware that season. He held Bucknell records for saves in season (201) and a career (664), and still owns the mark for saves in a game (34).

Thirty top-tier high school and club lacrosse teams will be showcased for college coaches and scouts.

Conveniently held on the campus of Bucknell University, the adidas Bison Brawl Team Lacrosse Camp provides the ultimate team competition, multiple synthetic turf fields, illuminated stadium venue, ample parking, dormitory facilities, hotels, hospitality and exposure to the college admissions and athletic recruitment process — not specific to Bucknell University.

The camp is held on Bucknell University’s 450-acre campus in the heart of the beautiful Susquehanna River Valley in Lewisburg, Pa. Bucknell’s campus is located adjacent to Rt. 15, just six miles south of I-80 and 55 miles north of Harrisburg, Pa. Campers compete in the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. With its recently-installed FieldTurf, it is one of the finest venues in all of college lacrosse. The camp also utilizes the newly renovated West Fields complex, which also offers a first-class atmosphere for lacrosse at any level.

The camp provides state-of-the-art facilities and accommodations for a competitive lacrosse atmosphere. All teams will have a chance to work on team concepts and various aspects of team play as the week progresses.

Camp staff and referees help provide the most realistic, game-like experience possible. This is a unique chance to grow and learn as a team while continuing to develop all the important individual skills necessary to play at the college level.

BISON LAX IN THE COMMUNITY My top priority as a head coach is to be sure that our program has a positive image on campus, in the community and in the lacrosse world. It is important to me that our student-athletes give back to the University, the community, and to the sport they love, and that these three entities are better with Bucknell Lacrosse than without.

That said, I am proud to announce this year’s Community Service Plan. Our goal is to contribute 24 hours of community service per team member. That’s 42 studentathletes x 24 hours each = over 1,000 hours! We will be contributing to many, many causes again this year. The events and non-profit organizations that we will be supporting this year are as follows:

The U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division, Co. A, 506th Regiment shows off care packages sent to Iraq by the Bison lacrosse team.

A Bison Never Forgets – The brainchild of 2011 graduates John Collett and Ryan Klipstein, Bison Lax raises funds to send care packages to former college lacrosse players now serving overseas in the armed forces. Collett and Klipstein earned the 2010 Patriot League Sportsmanship Award for their efforts. Americans Supporting Americans – Our participation in this program has caught national attention and has sparked a number of universities, programs, churches, classrooms, etc., to join. We were the first university and certainly the first athletic team to participate in this wonderful program that supports U.S. troops overseas. Best Buddies – One or two players each year enroll in the Best Buddies program, where they have an opportunity to build a relationship with a physically or mentally handicapped person in our area. Harvest Soup Kitchen – Team members will help serve at various times. Ronald McDonald House – “Grab a Tab” fundraising program. Colleges against Cancer – Team took part in a 5K run on campus. AIDS Walk – Team took part in a 1-hour AIDS walk in Gerhard Fieldhouse. Day Care – Visit Sunflower Day Care facility and read to young children. Adopt-A-Highway – Clean up highway along Stein Lane in Lewisburg.

THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELL

The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University.

The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty.
