Each year dozens of outstanding high school golfers and their families visit Bucknell University and the Bachman Golf Center. When they do, I get a chance to tell them about the fantastic opportunities that Bucknell offers, and the high expectations that the University maintains for its student-athletes, both in the classroom and on the golf course. These conversations often lead to some common questions, so I thought I would take a moment to clarify some frequently asked questions related to the Bucknell golf program.

— Coach Michael Binney • Financial Aid Bucknell is a Division I member of the Patriot League, and as such, we are a non-scholarship program. Need-based financial assistance is available to our team members through the Bucknell Office of Financial Aid and is “blind.” What this means is that neither Athletic Department nor the Golf Program is involved in this process. Families seeking Financial Aid assistance are required to apply for financial assistance each year.

• Program Priorities It is important that potential student athletes understand our program’s priorities. At Bucknell University, academics come first. The student-athlete must be capable of handling a demanding course load as well as competing in a D1 sport. Since the golf program is a two-season sport, those demands extend for the majority of the academic calendar and can be challenging to say the least. This will require commitment and dedication on the part of the student-athlete and will require efficient time management and the support of their family. Our program’s success depends upon our players being able to manage multiple priorities at the same time. With that said, the Bison golf program continuously produces multiple Patriot League Academic Honor Roll recipients each year, and the type of student-athlete that I will look to recruit is self-motivated, self-disciplined, and is a gentleman on and off the course, as well as in the classroom. As a member of the men’s golf program, a player is expected to uphold the highest standards of conduct when representing Bucknell University.

• Coming to Campus Any prospective student-athlete who is considering Bucknell University as a place to call home during their collegiate career should visit the campus if at all possible. I tell recruits all the time that they will know within five minutes of walking on to campus whether or not they can call Bucknell (or any campus for that matter) home for the next four years. It is vitally important for potential recruits to see the academic and athletic facilities that Bucknell has to offer. Lewisburg and Bucknell provide a symbiotic ‘vibe’ for learning and playing golf. The men’s golf program is looking for outstanding scholar-athletes that are dedicated to their studies and the game of golf.

• Golf Facilities Bucknell University has the unique advantage of having its own university-owned golf course and a year-round practice facility. This enables us to stand out amongst our peers in the college golf world and gives us a tremendous advantage in the northeastern portion of the country where the weather is less-than-hospitable during the winter

months where golf is concerned. The Bachman Golf Center, opened in 2011, features both indoor and outdoor practice areas, four hitting bays, an indoor and outdoor practice green, an outdoor short-game area, team locker rooms, a players lounge as well as a multi-functional conference room for meetings and academic study. Both facilities are located within easy walking and driving distance from the center of campus. Bison golfers have daily access to the course and its facilities.

• Golf Ability Here is where the proverbial rubber meets the road in recruiting terms. First and foremost, the type of player that I am looking to recruit is one that can come to Bucknell as a freshman with the confidence and skills necessary to compete in the Patriot League the very first time they tee it up. That kind of player is self-motivated, self-disciplined, and is not intimidated by older or more experienced players. That type of skillset and confidence only comes through tournament golf, and the experience gained by playing a lot of it. I expect recruits to be playing in the highest caliber junior events in which they can participate. That means tournaments like AJGA, IJGT and USGA events. Since Junior Golf has become global; and recruiting as well, it is hard for a coach in one particular geographical area to evaluate the skills of a junior golfer in another geographical area without the aid of national-level ranking systems like Junior Golf Scoreboard, Golfweek, and AJGA Polo Golf ranking systems. With that said, if a junior golfer wants a coach to notice their abilities, and that coach is a 1,000 miles away, their virtual resume needs to speak for itself. The bottom line is this; there is no substitute for tournament golf, except tournament golf!

In terms of scoring and handicaps, I rely very little on a player’s USGA Handicap because of the short-duration of its computation.

Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS) has done a tremendous job in leveling the national playing field by offering a 52-week tournament “handicap” so to speak. It takes a player’s results from the previous 52 weeks and computes a scoring differential that relates to a courses slope, rating and the actual tournament field as well. It is much more accurate than a typical USGA handicap and can be used nationally to compare players in a tournament context that have never played against one another. A typical high school player with D1 potential should have a 2.0 differential or better, which would normally place them inside the top 1,000 in any of the ranking systems.

• Coach’s Note Hopefully, this outline will give you some insight into what it will be like to be part of the Bison family. We are proud of our school, its traditions and its academic excellence, and feel that there are few places better suited for a student-athlete who wants the highest educational experience in the country. Those aren’t idle words, as Bucknell University boasts one of the highest rankings in student-athlete graduation in the country, and has claimed the fifth-most Academic All-America selections among all Division I schools. I am extremely blessed and fortunate that the Department of Athletics & Recreation at Bucknell has entrusted me with leading the men’s golf program and I will do my utmost to maintain the highest traditions and standards of the university and Bucknell Athletics.

The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University.

2015-16 MEN’S GOLF ROSTER

Michael Binney, Major, USMC (Ret.) is in his second year as head coach of the Bison men’s golf team. A veteran of more than 20 years of active duty service in the United States Marine Corps, Binney has now turned to a career in golf. Prior to his arrival at Bucknell, he has spent the previous four years as assistant professional at Ebensburg Country Club, and from 2010-12 he was assistant men’s golf coach at Saint Francis (Pa.) University.

After retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps, Binney attended the Professional Golfers Career College in Orlando, Fla., in 2009. He also received his USGA rules official credentials in 2010 and has been an active member of the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association’s tournament operations. In April 2011 Binney was hired as assistant pro at Ebensburg CC, and he also served as an assistant coach at Saint Francis under former Red Flash head coach Nick Wheeler.

Binney was an attack helicopter pilot during his two-decade tenure in the U.S. Marine Corps, rising to the rank of major. A 1986 graduate of Boston College, Binney received a master’s degree in National Security Affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California in 2003, where he completed his thesis on Joint Close Air Support in the Low Intensity Conflict.

He also attended Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School in Quantico, Virginia in 1996 and Marine Corps Command and Staff College in 2000.

Binney’s overseas deployments included service in Somalia, Bosnia, and multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, where he was recognized for his actions with the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. His most recent service was as a pilot stationed at the Marine Corps Reserve Training Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where he was a member of an aviation squadron responsible for operational flight planning, maintenance control, scheduling and quality assurance for 18 USMC helicopters. He also spent three years (2003-06) with the Joint Special Operations Command headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and earlier in his career he served in various roles as a pilot based out of Camp Pendleton, California and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Binney succeeded Jim Cotner, who retired in May 2014 after leading the Bucknell men’s golf team to three Patriot League titles and 16 tournament wins during his 13-year tenure as head coach. Binney became just the sixth head coach in the 70-plus-year history of the Bucknell men’s golf program, following in the footsteps of Harold Evans (1939-42, 1946-66), Brad Tufts (1967-75), Jeff Ranck (1976-81), Tommy Thompson (1982-2001) and Cotner (2001-14).

The Bucknell men’s golf team has enjoyed tremendous success in the last dozen years. The Bison have won three Patriot League titles and made three NCAA Regional appearances, to go along with numerous other team and individual winners. Here are some of the team’s achievements dating back to 2002-03.

Bachman Golf Center The Bucknell campus community, and in particular the Bison varsity golf programs, now has a wonderful new addition in the form of the brand new Bachman Golf Center. Ground was broken on the facility in September 2010, the indoor space was completed in the spring of 2011, and by the summer of 2011 the facility was fully functional, including the spacious new outdoor practice range and putting and short game areas.

The Bachman Golf Center is a multi-purpose, indoor/ outdoor facility that is located adjacent to the existing practice range, just across Smoketown Road from the 11th hole of the Bucknell Golf Club. The 5,600 square-foot building houses coaches’ offices and locker rooms for the Bison men’s and women’s teams, a video-equipped swing diagnostic area, indoor putting green and hitting bays, and a conference room.

Next to the building is a new 16,000-square-foot practice tee, a 10,000-square-foot, two-tiered putting green and a 5,700-square-foot short-game practice green with bunkers.

The Bison varsity golf teams have full access to the facility, while Bucknell Golf Club members have fee-for-use access outside the varsity playing seasons. The project was completely supported by donors.

“This wonderful new learning center significantly enhances our ability to practice and prepare, both as a team and individually,” said former Bucknell men’s golf coach Jim Cotner. “Today’s young players want to be able to work on their games all year round, and an indoor facility is essential to be able to attract top players to the Northeast. I also think the facility plays a big role in enhancing our team unity. It provides us with a central location where our players can get together throughout the year.”

“This project has been a long time in the making, and it is a dream come true,” said Bucknell women’s golf coach Kevin Jamieson. “On behalf of the Bison golf programs, we thank every player, parent and friend that has paved the way for this project to become a reality. This facility allows us to compete for some of the best players in the country that are looking for not only one of the best academic institutions, but one that can also offer wonderful practice facilities along with one of the nation’s best collegiate golf courses.”

The 18-hole course is complemented by a full-service restaurant and well-stocked pro shop, managed by veteran PGA Class A Professional Brian Kelly. The BGC also features a large practice range with both grass and artificial stalls, two large practice greens and additional short-game areas, including a practice bunker.

The original nine holes were built in 1930 and designed by renowned course architect Emil Loeffler, who was the greens superintendent and architect of the famed Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh. Loeffler’s original nine was altered in 1947, and the course was expanded to 18 holes in 1964. Course architect Edward Ault of Silver Springs, Md., was hired to supervise the expansion. In October 2014, a replica of Oakmont’s famed “Church Pew Bunker” was added to the No. 3 fairway.

The course plays to a par 70 and is measured at 6,400 yards from the back of the championship tees. Despite the relative lack of length compared to many modern golf courses, the Bucknell layout presents a stern challenge to golfers of all abilities, playing to a rating of 70.0 and slope of 128 from the blue (back) tees.

The club has hosted numerous U.S. Open local qualifiers and annually hosts the North Central Pennsylvania Golf Association’s Men’s and Women’s Amateur Championship. It is also in the regular rotation to host the Patriot League Championship, and has done so in 1994, 2000, 2005 and 2007.

2015-16 Team Outlook AFTER STRONG FINISH IN FALL, BISON AIM TO MOVE UP IN PATRIOT LEAGUE

The Bucknell men’s golf team feels as if it has a score to settle in 2015-16. Left with a bitter taste after a seventh-place finish at last spring’s Patriot League Championship, the Bison had a productive fall season and are intent on proving last season’s finish was an anomaly.

“The guys definitely feel as though they underperformed at Colgate at the Patriot League Championship last year, and it has made them hungry to do better this year,” said second-year head coach Michael Binney, whose squad wrapped up the fall season with a win at the Lehigh Invitational. “They are not necessarily upset or embarrassed, but they just know they can play a lot better. It affected how hard they prepared over the summer.”

Binney fielded a young team this fall, but one that is filled with promise. In addition to the win at Lehigh, the Bison placed third at tournaments hosted by Colgate and Columbia and fourth at the Bucknell Invitational.

Binney conducted a 72-hole qualifier prior to the start of the season, and sophomore C.J. Zachary won the event with a final-round 70. At the season opener at the Colgate Invitational, Zachary was joined in the starting five by junior Zachary Melnick, sophomore Daniel Levin and a pair of freshmen in Connor O’Brien and J.P. Raftery.

Raftery was the surprise of the qualifying tournament. He finished in fourth place to earn a spot on the roster as a walk-on. Levin was in that position last year, and he went on to lead the team in stroke average at 75.7 in 2014-15. Levin recorded five top-10 finishes across the fall and spring seasons a year ago.

“Dan was our No. 1 player as a walk-on last year, and we expect him to be in our top five all season this year as well,” said Binney. “He put in a ton of hard work this summer and got himself in really good physical condition. He is ready to go. If we can get the same thing out of J.P. Raftery this year then that would be outstanding. J.P. was a hockey player and a golfer in high school, and he hits the ball hard and far.”

Melnick, who was runner-up at the Bucknell Invitational this past fall, is part of a talented junior class that also includes John Edler and D.J. Magee. Edler and Magee have both been regular starters throughout their careers, and both figure to be mainstays in the lineup as this season progresses. Edler was just a notch behind Levin for low average last year at 75.8, and he had a pair of top-6 finishes a year ago.

“John might be the most naturally gifted player on the team,” said Binney. “He has such a natural swing, and when his putter is on, he can go low. I expect him to be a regular starter moving forward.”

Magee joined Levin as the only Bison to play in every tournament in

2014-15. Magee compiled a 77.6 average with four top-20s last season, and he had a solid 75.5 average in the fall of 2015. Melnick averaged 76.5 in the fall, including an opening-round 69 at the team’s home event.

“D.J. was one of our top three guys last year, and we expect the same this year,” said Binney. “He is a very consistent player. Zach Melnick was our No. 2 qualifier this year, and his 68 was the low round of the tournament. He is a very solid ball-striker who is also very smart on the course. He is steady and methodical, and he makes very few mistakes.”

The lone senior on this year’s roster is Nick Geissler, who appeared in a career-high seven events a year ago. Geissler had an internship this past summer, which has delayed his preparation for the season, but Binney says he is counting on his elder statesman for more than just birdies and pars.

“Nick is a great team leader, on and off the course,” praised Binney.

“He sets a great example for the younger guys and really holds them accountable as far as how they conduct themselves and how they get their work in.”

Levin, Zachary and the long-hitting J.B. Thompson comprise the sophomore class. While Levin quickly turned into one of the league’s best rookies last season, Binney feels that Zachary and Thompson are ready to turn the corner this fall. Zachary has already proven that by winning the qualifier and then finishing third at the Bucknell Invitational.

“C.J. is a very consistent ball-striker,” said Binney. “He doesn’t hit it super far, but it is straight and consistent. He has also worked hard on his conditioning and is much stronger than last year. This is the most confidence he has had since he got here. J.B.’s biggest weapon is his driver. He hits it long and straight. J.B. struggled in the first round of qualifying and then finished with 73-72-74. He has really worked hard on his short game, and I am expecting big things from him this season.”

In the first-year class, Raftery, O’Brien, Jubal Early and Ashton Radvansky comprise what Binney feels like could be an impact group.

O’Brien turned in three top-10 finishes and led the team with a 74.2 average in the fall.

“Connor O’Brien is an extremely consistent ball-striker, and he gained a ton of confidence from making it to the match play round at the USGA Junior Amateur this summer,” said Binney. “He is extremely smart and manages his game well. Jubal Early is a very good ball-striker and a natural leader. I expect him to contend for a spot in the starting lineup throughout the season. Ashton Radvansky was the 2014 Houston Golf Association Player of the Year, and he received a First Tee scholarship. He was one of the favorite sons in Houston junior golf, and we are so excited to have him here. He is a huge hitter, and his game should translate well to the college level.”

This was a busy fall for the Bison, who competed in seven events in a span of seven weeks in September and October, culminating with a victory at the Lehigh Invitational.

“I think there are high expectations from everyone,” said Binney.

“The freshmen are forcing the older guys to ramp up their games. A little bit of internal competition is good, and we have already seen quite a bit of that. The newcomers all know that they can play with these guys. Everyone is working hard at the practice facility, knowing that there are no gimmies in the lineup right now.”

Patriot League champion golfers Andrew Cohen ‘10 and Charlie Waddell ‘07 were selected to represent Bucknell on the Patriot League’s 25th Anniversary Men’s Golf Team. Two of the most outstanding linksmen in school history, Cohen and Waddell were both four-time All-Patriot League selections who guided the Bison to league titles and NCAA Tournament appearances.

Waddell was the Patriot League champion and Golfer of the Year in both 2005 and 2006, and he remains the only two-time medalist in league history.

In his four years at Bucknell, Waddell finished sixth, first, first and third at the Patriot League Championship, and he was the No. 1 player on title-winning teams in 2006 and 2007.

Waddell shot 67-71-71 for a then league-record 54-hole score of 209 (-1) at the 2005 Patriot League Championship. His spectacular birdie on the 17th hole of the final round at the Bucknell Golf Club sent him to a one-stroke victory over teammate Ben Pellicani. One year later at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course, Waddell compiled a 3-under-par 210 (69-70-71) to repeat as champion by a whopping 10 strokes, while sending the Bison to their very first Patriot League title in the sport of men’s golf, and their first NCAA team appearance since 1961.

He settled for a third-place individual finish as a senior in 2007, but his final-round 68 helped clinch a second-straight team championship and NCAA appearance.

A nominee for the prestigious Byron Nelson Award, Waddell graduated as the school record-holder for season (73.4) and career (74.9) scoring average.

He won four career tournaments and was runner-up four times. Following graduation, Waddell has continued to play competitive golf as both a professional and amateur.

Waddell and Cohen were teammates for one year, as Cohen finished T-4th en route to Patriot League Co-Rookie of the Year honors during the 2007 championship run. Like Waddell, Cohen would go on to post four straight top-10 finishes at the Patriot League Championship, including a record-setting victory in 2009.

Playing at the West Point Golf Club, Cohen shot 71-68-69 for a tournament-record 208 total, eclipsing Waddell’s mark by one stroke. He also helped Bucknell come from well behind on the final day to surpass Army and Navy to capture its third Patriot League Tournament in four years.

Cohen’s 208 remains the Patriot League Championship scoring record, and his 72.4 stroke average in the fall of 2009 is still the school record. He won four career tournaments and finished second twice.

BUCKNELL GOLF WELL-REPRESENTED IN ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME The Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1979 to honor the very best in the history of Bison Athletics. There are now 245 outstanding student-athletes, administrators, coaches and friends of Bucknell whose contributions to Bucknell Athletics are forever preserved in the Hall of Fame, including the five men listed below who were associated with the golf program.

HAROLD EVANS

CHICK WAGNER

No man played a larger role in solidifying Bucknell’s golf program than Harold Evans, who served the university for more than 70 years until his passing in 2002.

Evans came to Bucknell as caddie master in 1931 and took over as head professional Harold Evans in 1932. After organizing the school’s club golf team, he became the Bison’s first intercollegiate golf coach in 1939. He won a schoolrecord 144 dual matches during his nearly quartercentury tenure as head coach and was inducted into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986.

Evans led the Bison to five Middle Atlantic Conference championships from 1956-61, and helped two of those teams to the NCAA Tournament.

The beauty of the Bucknell Golf Club is a tribute to Evans and his wife, Mary Louise, who planted countless trees and flowers and shaped the appearance of the course through the years, including the expansion from 9 to 18 holes in 1964.

Chick Wagner, a 1984 Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee, played in the 1975 and 1976 NCAA Golf Championships and was winner of the 1975 ECAC Fall Championship.

Co-captain of the 1975 and 1976 Bucknell teams, Wagner helped lead the Bison to the Chick Wagner 1973 Middle Atlantic Conference championship and to second place in the 1974 Eastern Championship.

He was on the Bucknell team that traveled to Scotland in 1973 for the St. Andrews International Intercollegiate Championship. A member of teams that had a combined 35-18 record in dual matches, Wagner set a school and Bucknell Golf Club competitive course record with a round of 66 in 1975, and he set Bucknell scoring records with a 73.8 season average (1975) and 76.4 career average. The recipient of the Edward W. Pangburn Award, he finished in the top 10 in the conference championship tournament three times and was twice in the top 10 in the Eastern Championship. He was the 1983 champion of Oakmont Country Club.

TOMMY THOMPSON

BRAD TUFTS

A Bucknellian in the truest sense of the award, Tommy Thompson spent 44 years as either a player, assistant coach or head coach at Bucknell. A three-year starter in baseball and basketball and captain of both teams, Thompson served Tommy Thompson in the U.S. Army, pitched in the Detroit Tigers system and coached baseball, basketball, golf and tennis teams at Bucknell until retiring in 2001.

He amassed more than 1,000 victories as a Bison player and coach. He was team captain of the basketball team and led the team in scoring as a senior at 16.3 points per game. Also a star on the baseball diamond, Thompson was named the outstanding athlete in the Class of 1960. From 1967-81 he was head baseball coach, and he helped author one of the greatest turnarounds in Bucknell history in any sport, taking the Bison nine from an 0-15 record in 1968 to a 15-4 mark and a Middle Atlantic Conference title in 1969.

He took over as head golf coach in 1981 and directed the Bison to an impressive 113-27 dualmatch record, to go along with seven tournament titles. He was named Patriot League Coach of the Year in 2000.

Thompson was inducted into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986.

A 2000 Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Brad Tufts served the Bucknell athletic department for over 30 years as either coach or administrator.

He was the men’s golf coach from 1967-75 and led Brad Tufts his teams to Middle Atlantic Conference championships in 1967 and 1973. His men’s teams posted an impressive 80-38 dual-match record. Tufts became the firstever coach of the Bucknell women’s golf program in 1998 and retired from coaching, and Bucknell, following the 2000 spring season.

He served in various administrative roles, including sports information director, associate director of public relations, director of information services, assistant and associate director of athletics and interim director of athletics. Tufts received the Lester Jordan Award from the College Sports Information Directors of America in 1998. He is also the 1989 recipient of ECAC-SIDA’s Irving T. Marsh Award and the 2001 recipient of ECAC-SIDA’s Bob Kenworthy Good Person Award.

BOB ETZWEILER

Bob Etzweiler

Bob Etzweiler is still remembered as one of Bucknell’s top golfers, and he occupied the No. 1 or 2 position on Bison squads that captured three straight Middle Atlantic Conference championships.

Etzweiler won the MAC individual title in 1959, tied for second in 1960 and placed

fifth in 1961.

He qualified for the NCAA Championship during his senior campaign and became one of only five eastern players to qualify for the match-play field of 64. The York, Pa., native was also selected to play in the East-West Match at that tournament.

In an era when virtually all of the competition was in match-play format, Etzweiler had a career dualmatch record of 23-10-1 and was 18-3-1 against MAC opponents.

He helped lead Bucknell to a 25-9 record during his career, including a school-record 10-2 record in 1961. Etzweiler, who in 2003 became just the second golfer to be inducted into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, later won numerous amateur titles in the York area.

CHARLIE WADDELL He will not be eligible for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame until 2017, but Charlie Waddell is a good bet to one day join these elite ranks.

A 2007 graduate, Waddell is arguably the finest Charlie Waddell golfer in Bucknell annals.

He won Patriot League championships in 2005 and 2006, making him the only player in league history to win the league title twice. He also finished sixth in 2004 and third in 2007, giving him four All-PL plaques.

Waddell won four career tournaments and helped Bucknell to back-to-back Patriot League team championships in 2006 and 2007, leading to NCAA Regional berths both years.

Waddell, who graduated as the school record-holder for season (73.4) and career (74.9) scoring average, was also an outstanding student at Bucknell. He was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection and was a nominee for the Byron Nelson Award, presented to the top golfer in the nation who also demonstrates good sportsmanship and citizenship.

TELEPHONE CALLS As per NCAA by-law 13.1.3.1, institutional staff members may not telephone a prospect (or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardians) prior to July 1 following the prospect’s completion of the junior year in high school. After July 1, institutional staff members may telephone a prospect once per week (measured Sunday through Saturday). The once-per-week limit applies to the entire institution.

JUNIOR YEAR • Send a letter expressing interest in Bucknell and the men’s golf program and fill out the online bio form at BucknellBison.com. Include both academic and golf resumes. Golf bio should include tournaments played, size of field, scores shot and place finish.

• Register with the NCAA Clearinghouse. Be sure to include them as recipients of ACT and SAT test results. When you receive the test scores, forward them to coach Michael Binney as well.

SUMMER AFTER JUNIOR YEAR • The NCAA prohibits a coach from calling you prior to July 1 after you complete your junior year.

• E-mail coach Binney (mwb013@bucknell.edu) your summer tournament schedule.

• Make an appointment to visit Bucknell and meet with coach Binney.

• Update any SAT or ACT scores.

SENIOR YEAR • Send coach Binney an unofficial copy of your high school transcript, test scores and a list of classes you will be taking during your senior year.

• E-mail the coach your fall tournament schedule and results after you play these events.

• In October, coach Binney will inform prospective student-athletes of their status as a recruit versus a tryout candidate.

• Potential recruits will be invited for an “official visit” to meet team members and experience campus life.

• Recruit candidates and tryout candidates should submit applications.

• Candidates applying for financial assistance should do so at this time through the Bucknell financial aid office. The department of athletics is not involved in this process.

• In November, the top candidates will be offered an admissions spot and a spot on the 10-player men’s golf roster.

CONTACTS As per NCAA by-law 13.02.3, a contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent or legal guardian and an institutional staff member or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. Any such faceto-face encounter that is prearranged or takes place on the grounds of the prospect’s high school, or at the site of organized competition or practice involving the prospect’s high school, preparatory school, two-year college, or all-star team is considered a contact, regardless of the conversation that occurs. We are limited to three off-campus contact days per prospective student-athlete.

VISITS, Official According to NCAA by-law 13.7.1.2, a prospect may not make more than five expense-paid visits to NCAA member institutions, regardless of the number of sports in which the prospect is involved. An institution may not provide an expense-paid visit to a prospect who has not presented the institution with a high school (or college) academic transcript and a score from a PSAT, an SAT, a PACTPlus, or an ACT test taken on a national testing date under national testing conditions. Prospects must also be registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse in order to make an official visit. The official visit may not exceed 48 hours.

VISITS, Unofficial According to NCAA by-law 13.8.1, a prospect may visit an institution’s campus at the prospect’s own expense an unlimited number of times and may make an unofficial visit before the prospect’s senior year in high school.

BISON GOLF: LEADERS ON THE COURSE AND IN THE CLASSROOM Bucknell athletics teams are well-known for their prowess both on the playing fields and in the classroom. According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times and ranked second in the most recent survey in the fall of 2014.

All 27 Bison varsity teams easily met the NCAA’s Academic Performance Rate (APR) standards once again last year. In fact, 19 programs boast perfect scores in the four-year rolling average. Bucknell received 19 NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) National Recognition Awards, the second-highest total among all Division I institutions.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 139 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 441 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2014-15 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 319 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during the spring 2015 semester.

A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model.

At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. This program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy a full range of collegiate experiences.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. In addition, the Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program.

BISON GOOD SPORTS: Now in its ninth year, Bison Good Sports is a sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. Bucknell teams have some of the best fan support in the Patriot League, and we encourage all fans to enthusiastically cheer on the Orange & Blue in a positive manner.

Bison Athletics The Patriot League, which was founded on the principles of admitting athletes who are academically representative of their class, is in its third decade of academic and athletic achievement.

Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a well-rounded education.

The Patriot League began as a successful Division I-AA (now called Football Championship Subdivision) football conference in 1986. Full League members include American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy. Associate members include Fordham in football, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in women’s rowing, Georgetown in both football and women’s rowing, and Richmond in women’s golf.

These member institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. Alumni from Patriot League colleges and universities have played a leadership role in the shaping of our country.

In the classroom, the Patriot League’s full-member institutions, individually and collectively, consistently rank among the top Division I programs in the NCAA Graduation Rates Report. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first among all Division I conferences offering scholarships in student-athlete graduation rates according to the NCAA Graduation Rates report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data.

In addition, 90 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

League members have also distinguished themselves on the field of play. The Patriot League sponsors championship competition in 24 sports (11 for men; 13 for women). Championship teams from 15 sports are guaranteed advancement into NCAA post-season competition: baseball, men and women’s basketball, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men and women’s lacrosse, rowing, men and women’s soccer, softball, men and women’s tennis and volleyball.

Along the timeline of Patriot League history about three-quarters of the Patriot League’s Scholar-Athletes of the Year also received All-Patriot League status for their exemplary athletic performance. In the Patriot League’s history, more than 200 student-athletes have been recognized as CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, while more than 12,000 have qualified for the League’s Academic Honor Roll. More than 30 student-athletes have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Additionally, Patriot League student-athletes have earned Fulbright Scholarships, Rhodes Scholarships, Marshall Scholarships and NACDA/Disney Scholarships.

As Bison Athletics seeks to create a comprehensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an important element of the complete studentathlete experience is participation in an elite leadership development program designed to identify, develop, challenge and support student-athletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life.

The Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy was launched in August 2011 with the goal of delivering programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment.

Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come. Leadership Academy programming has evolved and expanded throughout its first four years, and much more is planned in 2014-15.

Approximately 60 student-athletes participate in Leadership Academy programming each year. Representing the men’s soccer team in 2015 will be Mike Lansing and Chris Thorsheim.

Bucknell University alumni ranked No. 3 among liberal arts college graduates and among the highest for all colleges and universities in a 2015 PayScale College Salary Report released this summer in Money Magazine.

The annual survey, which launched in 2008, assesses median starting and mid-career salaries among graduates of top U.S. liberal arts colleges. This year, alumni from 1,003 schools participated.

In this year’s report, Bucknell alumni had a median early career salary of $56,000, and the magazine ranked Bucknell No. 37 on its list of best colleges.

National Reputation A number of recent reports have served to underscore Bucknell’s national reputation: • In 2007, The Washington Monthly ranked Bucknell No. 7 among the best liberal arts colleges in the country when it comes to fostering research and promoting an ethic of service and social mobility.

• In 2010, the Peace Corps listed Bucknell at No. 6 on its top 25 list of small colleges and universities producing Peace Corps Volunteers.
