ANNUAL REPORT 2021-22

OF SCHOOL

Dearmembers of the Buckingham Friends School community,

Each year, our Annual Report celebrates the generous support we receive, in every form, during the year. It is my pleasure to speak on behalf of the students, faculty and staff, and the entire Buckingham Friends School community to offer our wholehearted gratitude for a year of generosity, encouragement, and inspiration.

The story and images we share in this report highlight the tremendous impact of the community’s many contributions—of collaboration, wisdom, emotional and spiritual commitment and, of course, financial support.

Though presented with a number of challenges, we faced this year with healing dichotomies. We encountered persistent disruptions of COVID, yet hope was always apparent. We had to be cautious in unaccustomed ways, but joy always surfaced. We had a year of wearing masks at times, but we recognized in each other, more than ever, the defining spirit of the School.

Despite the many challenges we endured this year, our milestones were notable!

We received the largest gift in the School’s history, $5.1 million. That gift was inspired both by the School’s longstanding mission to honor the light in each person, and by our plans for a future equipped with

state-of-the-art facilities and equipment that will allow us to continue to foster the growth, individual talents, and passions of every student.

The success of this year’s auction surpassed our results in recent years. Our volunteers, including members of the board, have been inspiring, engaged, and active. I can honestly state, with pride and gratitude, that the care and concern for our present operations and for the future of the School have been exceptional.

This past year was our third year of advancing the goals of the strategic plan that will usher BFS through the rest of its third century

MISSION

Buckingham Friends School honors the Light within each person, inspires scholarship and spiritual community, and instills the value of caring for others and our world.

FROM THE HEAD
“ONE MISTAKE WE MAKE WHEN TALKING ABOUT PRESERVATION IS DISCUSSING PRESERVING ONLY THE PAST. OF COURSE, THAT IS PART OF IT. BUT THE TRUTH IS, AS WE CONSIDER CHANGE, WE ARE ENGAGED IN SHAPING THE FUTURE.” —CAROLE OWENS, COLUMNIST, THE BERKSHIRE EDGE

and beyond. We received critically important counsel to guide our path in both preserving and improving the campus in considered and thoughtful ways. Crucial input came from students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, members of Buckingham Friends Meeting, and friends. That guidance has been used to inform our architects, contractors, and other planning partners.

Although this report is primarily about the 2022 fiscal year, I think it is important to acknowledge efforts throughout the community to look both to our history and our future while considering campus improvements. That approach has enabled us to move forward with purpose and integrity, as grateful beneficiaries of this wondrous place with a unique spirit, passed down from the stewards before us. As a community, we are clearly resolved to leave the School better than we found it, with classrooms, outdoor and play areas, and facilities that meet the demands of the rapidly changing world outside of the campus—now, and for decades to come.

The new fiscal year will be characterized by significant forward-facing changes. Designs for new facilities will remain true to our aesthetic, complement other facilities, and blend in well with our wooded campus. Our new larger gym, set into the hill, will maintain a low profile from across the upper field. Our new science building, with an outdoor teaching porch, will be nestled in the woods to provide students greater access to our environment.

The urge to retain the beautiful bucolic nature of our campus will not stand in the way of progress. Every effort and every expense will follow a focus on pedagogical advancements, educational opportunities for students, and faculty development. We will continue to transform in a thoughtful, responsible, sustainable manner.

There is a powerful energy among those that support BFS. It is energy that unites respect for the past and dreams for the future, expansive aspirations and pragmatic realism, concern and optimism. That energy has sustained us, especially over the past couple of challenging years—it will continue to fuel our work together.

As a school, we thank you with words and with heartfelt appreciation. Your gifts of support enable the School to continue to provide inspiring, experiential learning, lighting the way forward for future generations, so they may benefit from our pledge to foster curiosity, creativity, analytical thinking, and collaboration.

As our graduating class made their way through their final chapter as BFS students, our community navigated yet another challenging year. Through it all, the class of 2022—and our entire community—demonstrated the resilience, creativity, and connection that are such hallmarks of the BFS experience. We intentionally prioritized health and safety, invested in key resources, and made it possible for increased teaching and learning to resume on campus and in our classrooms. While we all felt the seesaw effect of flexing from virtual to in person learning and teaching as COVID waxed and waned, the powerful energy of our presence together fueled our many successes.

a gathering of many qualities (or properties) that has over time, come together, and stood resilient among the space that you have occupied at Buckingham Friends School”.

The story of this class reminds us how, even in challenging times, BFS creates opportunity and space for lasting friendships. The foundational classroom structure brings peer groups together, but it’s what we experience and achieve together that cements our strong bonds.

As the students made their final remarks and reflections, we celebrated their accomplishments and personhood. On the cusp of their next chapter, Stephanie spoke powerful words that resonated with all present— “Be mindful of your past. Let it inform you and give you confidence. You’ve done this before... you have helped to build your family and community; you have problem solved and built lasting friendships.”

On June 5, 2022, BFS proudly graduated twenty bright Lights. This unique class formed over time, with 47% joining in Upper School alone! Graduation speaker and faculty member Stephanie Thliveris reminded them that, “You are a unique graduating class,

We are proud to share this list of secondary schools that the Class of 2022 has chosen to build upon their BFS foundation: Abington Friends School, Blair Academy, George School, Gould Academy, LaSalle College High School, New Hope Solebury High School, Oxbridge Academy, and Solebury School,

Qualifying individuals and businesses have the opportunity to receive tax credits for supporting financial assis tance for BFS students. Individuals and businesses in Pennsylvania can participate in the Friends Collaborative by making a minimum contribution of $3,000 per year for two consecutive years to support tuition assistance at BFS and fellow Quaker schools. In turn, participants receive a PA state tax credit for 90% of their contribution amount. As an example, a $10,000 Friends Collaborative gift to support tuition assistance has a net cost of just $1,000 to the donor – making this truly a win-win for donors and BFS! BFS receives at least 75% of every contribution from BFS donors, and the remainder supports scholarships at other Quaker schools in our area.

YOU!

PLEASE HELP US “GROW” SEEDLINGS!

Please submit all news and updates with a high-resolution photo by Friday, February 3, 2023 to advancement@bfs.org to be included in the Spring 2023 edition of Seedlings. Seedlings Spring 2022 Correction: Pam Brown Benson ‘63 It’s been almost 59 years, but I feel like I’m back in Study Hall! My husband, Mark, and I have been together for 29 years. Besides everyday life and health, we enjoy 60’s music and sci-fi. I’ve gotten back into my artwork, currently acrylic paintings. I like to do quiet things, reading, sorting through endless papers, cards, letters, and photos, and cooking. A few of my favorite memories include the wonderful sledding hill and Mrs. Haines’ nature walks. I learned a lot at BFS, not just the three R’s, but some basic core values and ways to live that are useful for me now, especially at this time of my life.

THANK

York
