Dear members of the Buckingham Friends School community, On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, I extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who gave so generously to Buckingham Friends School this past fiscal year. Your generosity was expressed in so many forms – through gifts of time, talent, and resources. Each gift supported the current health and future vitality of the School while providing for the rich and rewarding experiences of our students. It is especially noteworthy how the BFS community embraced and supported the School — and our efforts to exceed our goals — during a year of unprecedented and unrelenting uncertainty. Participation in the Annual Fund increased — 100% of our employees participated; special gifts allowed us to offer a broad range of dynamic programs while shouldering the expenses related to our challenging circumstances; and an impressive number of community members increased their giving in support of our continued efforts to increase funding for faculty salaries and professional development. I’m pleased to report that we have been accountable in every way. We have lived our mission and supported the individual promise of every learner, their Light guiding our way through stormy seas. We have invested further in the soul of the School – our teachers and culture keepers – advancing faculty salaries ten percent over two years while strengthening our investment in individual and collective growth and professional endeavors. We have cared for our community, increasing funding for financial aid, especially during a time of greater need. We have managed our budget and resources prudently, built our endowment and reserves, and accomplished what we set out to do and asked you to support. Whether in-person or connected “Together Wherever,” a positive spirit permeated the School. Inspired by that positive spirit, and by the generosity of our community, I am very excited about the future prospects for BFS. Within the guiding framework of our mission and clearly articulated values, each of us will need to continue our support in order to accomplish our goals for our valued people, programs, and place. Thank you again for your generous gifts, the impact that you have had on the learning experiences of the children, and your ongoing commitment to the culture of our beloved BFS.

Paul Lindenmaier Head of School

Mission Buckingham Friends School honors the Light within each person, inspires scholarship and spiritual community, and instills the value of caring for others and our world.

BUCKINGHAM FRIENDS SCHOOL

The graduating class of 2021 is well known for their love of the game Four Square. The rhythmic sound of the ball bouncing in the court— accompanied by the yells of success and the groans of missed opportunity—could be heard at their every chance on the playground.

1 2

As our school community started back last September, we knew it would be another unique and challenging year. The shock of the pandemic may have subsided, but the reality of what it continued to ask of every community member felt heavy — at times nearly impossible. We needed to work harder to find our usual joy, laughter, humility, and grace, and we needed to do it together. The class of 2021, our 8th grade class, our biggest of Big Friends, were our models of possibility. When the world hands you a pandemic what do you do? Sometimes the answer is — you just play Four Square. As Laura Downs described in her graduation speech, the game of Four Square is a metaphor for life, “you have to be ready to seize an opportunity when it presents itself,” and “when it doesn’t work out… just own it”. This notion of flexible thinking, looking for the silver lining and taking advantage of the moments that really matter, and “owning” it all for the better or the worst, was evident daily on our campus. Together, we were able to envision the promise of a new day, filled with hope and security, thanks to the strength, agility, and good nature of our collective community. As we rolled into June, our traditional (although reimagined!) celebrations brought a breath of fresh air. On the afternoon of June 10th, twenty new graduates — safely surrounded by friends, family, and faculty — made their final comments as students, and took their first steps as graduates. We are proud to share this list of secondary schools that the Class of 2021 has chosen in order to build upon their BFS foundation: Blair Academy, Central Bucks, Germantown Academy, George School, LaSalle College High School, New Hope Solebury High School, Pennington School.

BFS has recently joined the Friends Collaborative! EITC program supporters will enjoy easier access to enrollment and benefit from the Collaborative’s support team, streamlining this process for you and for BFS! Did you know that you can receive tax credits for supporting financial assistance for BFS students? Qualifying individuals and businesses in Pennsylvania can participate in the Friends Collaborative by making a minimum contribution of $3,000 per year for two consecutive years to support tuition assistance at BFS and fellow Quaker schools. In turn, participants receive a PA state tax credit for 90% of their contribution amount. For example, a $10,000 Friends Collaborative gift to support tuition assistance has a net cost of just $1,000 to the donor – making this truly a win-win for donors and BFS! BFS receives at least 75% of every contribution from BFS donors, and the remainder supports scholarships at other Quaker schools in our area.
