ALL DECADES HAVE THEIR ARTISTIC REFERENCES. Every era and generation has its idols and superstars who mark their contemporaries, but rarely does a celebrity become a popular culture icon that transcends generations and TAYLOR SWIFT already has a privileged place in the popular culture.

That’s why TAYLOR is on our cover. Her life in music and the collective hysteria she provokes with people of all identities, origins and ages are a high-impact phenomenon. In the main editorial of this issue, we review the social phenomenon that TAYLOR SWIFT became in the middle of “The Eras Tour”, her romance with Travis Kelce and the release of the re-recorded version of ‘1989’, which we consider , his masterpiece.

The world’s vox populi is focused on the war between Israel and Hamas. In our pages we give you the chronology of a crucial point in the conflict in the Holy Land, the city of JERUSALEM. Werner Herzog Halloween season demands watching horror movies. NOSFERATU, be it the 1922 Symphony of Horror or the 1979 Vampire of the Night, always be a good option.

NOSFERATU is an icon of popular culture around horror. Murnau brought the story to the cinema performed by Max Shreck 100 years ago. The original version is a masterpiece but you must see its version from 1979, directed and performed by a no less talented but more explosive duo than Murnau and Shreck: Werner Herzog and Klaus KInski.

NOSFERATU: PHANTOM DER NACHT, shows the vampire not as a simple bloodthirsty beast but as an tormented soul, from the superb Kinski performance and Popol Vuh’s b.s.o., is a masterpiece that overturns the topic that a big budget is necessary to make good films.

Herzog made this great movie on a very low budget. Gerardo Guerrero debuts in these pages with an article about the century of NOSFERATU. You must read it and you must watch both NOSFERATU’S versions (both avaliable on YouTube) on Halloween.

Corazón Playero was founded in 2018 by Isabel Andrade.

As a stay-at-home mom, being that she is a very active and creative person, Isabel wanted to be able to work from home.

At �irst, she started Corazon Playero as a hobby. It was then when her concept of “Wearable art” came to her mind. Isabel remembers having a passion for fashion and accessories since she was a little girl. So she just wanted to put all this energy and passion into her own business.

WHERE ARE WE GOING IN THIS TURBULENT WORLD? I AM HAPPY TO COLLABORATE WITH BUBBLES & CHERRIES. SINCE I HAD CONTACT WITH THE MAGAZINE I HAD A FEELING OF JOY, FRESHNESS AND OPTIMISM. AND BOY, DO WE NEED THEM IN THE WORLD IN WHICH WE LIVE! We are at the beginning of a new era of humanity. As we are all immersed in our daily lives, it is difficult for us to see “the big movie” that is unfolding in front of our eyes. But it is evident that we are at the birth of a new era. It is not only a change of era, of fashions. We are experiencing the birth of a different reality. Like all births, it brings with it uncertainty, anguish, stress and pain.

When the inhabitants of Europe in the years 1400-1500 lived through the collapse of the Middle Ages and the birth of the Renaissance, they did not realize that one era was ending and a new one was about to be born: a shoemaker in Madrid in 1480 or a baker In Paris 1520 they did not know that the Middle Ages were about to end and a new era was about to begin. Thus, we today are not aware that an entire era is ending and a new era for humanity is beginning. A colleague of mine (he was also a chemist, Nobel Prize winner in 1985), Paul Crutzen, baptized this new era as the ‘ANTHROPOCENE’: an era where a single species, Homo Sapiens, has been able to modify the Earth’s crust. It is evident to all of us that we face the unintended consequences of the great progress we are enjoying. www.bubblesandcherries.com

We partially destroy the Ozone layer that protects us from dangerous ultraviolet radiation, we heat the atmosphere of our planet, causing increasingly frequent and powerful hurricanes, we contaminate our oceans with microplastics, we cause the accelerated disappearance of numerous species, we mercilessly deforest our forests and jungles. We see the appearance of wars in several places on the planet at the same time, insecurity in our cities becomes everyday life, we consume natural resources voraciously and hunger and poverty have not been able to be eradicated. It seems that humanity is descending into a spiral of annihilation of life.

But let me tell you that this, as depressing as it may seem, is not so. Although apparently all these dangers increase and fall upon us, human beings have a great resourcefulness to face great challenges, which at first seem insurmountable. There are four events in our history as a species that mark the great quantum leaps of civilization: The discovery of fire a million and a half years ago, the beginning of agriculture ten thousand years ago, the first printing press in 1440, and the Internet. In the following article I describe the influence that these four discoveries had on the human race. Now I’ll tell you why I think we are not on the brink of the abyss now and that we have a bright future in front of us: It is true that our development is having a brutal impact on the nature and stability of human society.

But it is also true that we are finding solutions to these impacts: we are advancing rapidly in the restoration of the ozone layer with truly spectacular success, we are developing clean technologies with renewable energies that allowed, for the first time this year 2023, the stabilization of greenhouse gas emissions with a positive projection to begin reducing them in 2030, there are effective programs in several areas of the planet with very successful reforestations, cases of recovery of endangered species are documented, such as the California Condor, the Humpback Whale , the Hawksbill Turtle, the Bengal Tiger. Humanity knew how to respond to the threat of a deadly pandemic with extraordinary speed and effectiveness; today, far fewer babies die within the first year of life than in the entire previous history of humanity.

In this painful birth of the ANTHROPOCENE we suffer from change, but the life we have in front of us is worth living with joy, freshness and optimism.

LAND AND FEET

UNDERSTANDING THE MIRACLE OF LIFE IS SOMETHING I OFTEN SEEK. I LIVED AND GREW UP IN AN ECO-FRIENDLY, SELF-SUSTAINING HOUSE SURROUNDED BY OYAMEL TREES, PINES FROM THE FAMILY THAT CAN REACH UP TO 50 METERS IN HEIGHT, SOUTH OF MEXICO CITY. This experience left an indelible mark on my life. Our house was the first to become entirely self-sufficient, back in the 1990s when green technologies weren’t what they are today. We relied on a windmill to generate electricity and a rainwater cistern to convert rainwater into potable water. I remember the soaps my dad brought home, brimming with bacteria, which we couldn’t use under any circumstances. These soaps treated wastewater so that we could reuse it for watering the fruit trees in our backyard, trees that grew alongside us.

I’ll never forget when our windmill was sent flying by the typical February gusts in Mexico City. We were without power for several days until the solar panels arrived.

During my childhood, every new idea my father implemented in our house (he never stopped introducing new eco-technologies and ideas to make the house more functional and self-sufficient) was a constant source of excitement and new adventures. Living without electricity was a recurring theme in my life, allowing me to look at the sky, trying to decipher the sun, which marked our daylight hours. I sought to understand the wind, the driving force behind our wind turbines, which were also our daylight hours, and the pumps that ensured our water supply, as well as those clouds that could condemn us to long days with candles and oil lamps.

I created countless stories and discovered a multitude of freedoms at a young age that connected my spirit with nature. My father, the scientist, always eager to understand more about the intricate and delicate relationship between human boundaries and our natural origins, and my German mother, cautious, loving, always nurturing plants, collecting seeds, sheltering animals, and raising daughters, both made my childhood a sanctuary where I always find myself wanting to return.

When I became a mother I promised myself to give my daughters a childhood they would always want to revisit, and that’s when, while trying to introduce my daughters to gardens and edible plants, I stumbled upon my life’s calling.

Over a decade ago, my family and I moved to Los Cabos in search of a better quality of life, which I undoubtedly found. I started working at Montessori Regina as a gardening teacher, where I worked for a little over five years. This experience has truly enriched my life. Sharing this learning experience with my daughters and their schoolmates quickly made me realize the opportunity, importance, impact, and multiple benefits that a garden can bring to children, schools, teaching, the community, families, and the future.

Teaching at the school gave me the opportunity, through one of my students’ mothers, Isabel Loustaunau, to explore and discover another of my great passions in life: communication. Isabel invited me to collaborate with her on her radio show ‘Isabel y su Café,’ which airs daily on the Cabo Mil radio station, where I discuss topics related to the environment and organic gardens in my segment ‘ConLosPiesEnLaTierra.’

A little over three years ago, I had my first contract for the design, installation, and maintenance of an organic garden for the Zadun Ritz Carlton hotel. Rodrigo Torres, the hotel’s executive chef, was the first to trust me and give me this significant opportunity and responsibility. Shortly after, I began working on the installation and maintenance of the organic garden at the Paradisus Meliá Hotel.

Two years ago, I conducted systematic documentation and taxobotanical work for the Amakiri Botanical Garden in Quivira, Cabo San Lucas, where I was responsible for cataloging over 5000 plants from 70 cactus families. This work was fascinating and not only brought me closer to understanding cacti but also to the history and evolution of plants and our Mesoamerican civilization. I am also in charge of the organic garden at the Marriott Los Cabos Hotel.

During this year, I had the privilege of being part of the citizen movement @SANJOSECLEANUPDAY, under the leadership of Claudia Padilla and in collaboration with Claudia Escobosa.

We conducted the first citizen training on waste education and recycling for the city of San José del Cabo. We divided the city into eighty neighborhoods and, over four months, held more than seventy workshops, courses, and talks to raise awareness about waste issues. In a single day, we managed to collect a total of 44.5 tons of garbage, 20 tons of water hyacinth, established 3 recycling centers, collected 25 kilograms of trash from the ocean floor, involved 6 educational institutions, and engaged 6 organizations, uniting 1413 citizens.

Since March of this year, I have been in charge of the organic garden at Semillon, Puerto Raiz, and since April, I have been the director of the Playa Centro Community Center.

Now, I am very happy and grateful to start, in December, the installation and maintenance of the organic garden at the Four Seasons Hotel in Costa Palmas.

One of my primary motivations for understanding the secrets and mysteries of bringing people closer to gardens has to do with the challenge we face today regarding our geographical expansion. Human beings are ceasing to be a generalist species, which means that humans had been able to inhabit all kinds of habitats. Throughout our history, our occupation had been the conquest of new regions, from Africa to the farthest corners of the planet. We landed on the moon in 1969, an event that marked the pinnacle of human conquest.

Today, however, there is a phenomenon happening at a rapid pace, although we might not be fully aware of it: human beings have always been global inhabitants, but this is changing. In 1950, more than two-thirds (70%) of the population lived in rural settlements. In 2007, for the first time in history, the global urban population exceeded the rural population, and since then, this trend has

only been increasing. By 2030, 60% of the world’s population will live in urban areas, and by 2050, this percentage will increase to 70%. This means that by 2050, there will be nearly ten billion people living in the world’s major cities. In less than a century, we have managed to reverse the global demographic distribution. The alternation between expansion and concentration phases is a normal part of the geographical diffusion of all species, whether animal or plant. However, we are accustomed to seeing ourselves as beings outside of nature, but in reality, we are increasingly subject to the factors that govern the expansion of any species: climate, ecosystem disruptions, social interactions, and more.

We are no longer a generalist species; we are becoming specialists. A species capable of thriving only in a specific environment, namely, large urban areas. The transformation of our species from generalist to specialist is advantageous in terms of resource access, efficiency, defense, and species spread. However, it also exposes us to a significant risk: if the urban conditions that enable our prosperity were to be disrupted, it would have a significant impact on our chances of survival.

It is precisely this demographic principle that has led me to try to understand how to bring people closer to a better and more informed relationship between the food we can grow and harvest, whether it’s in our homes, schools, hospitals, offices, mental health centers, parks, community centers, sidewalks, roofs, and walls. I wanted to understand the idea of marriage as the final act of having found my soul mate, by love of my life as they had shown it to me and I decided to experience it, I got married and divorced twice, within all the learning that I will continue to have from the actions aligned to my life, the most genuine experience was understanding that love is my own and It is a combination of service and freedom that allows us to experience surrender to the whole, it goes beyond any contract made by human beings and that is why there are agreements between people who love each other intelligently, deciding to be the ideal partner for themselves, because First you are the ideal partner and then you are the ideal partner with the other. Real love is understanding, which leads you to compassion.

1.MEDITATION: Several years ago I meditated and the consequence was an awakening, it is a word that gives the sensation of being egotistical, but the reality is that meditation causes an awakening in our consciousness, a birth to a life of observation. “MINDFULNESS” is a meditation technique that consists of observing the present moment, without intentions to judge and with full acceptance that allows us to cultivate consciousness in our daily lives.

Meditation is a practice that brings us to the present moment and is the key to living. “MINDFULNESS” is the energy of consciousness and consciousness is the immediate knowledge that an individual has of his own existence, his actions and that outside of him.

The first thing that meditation achieved in me was to be able to observe my

emotions, I learned to recognize them and be a witness to them, previously, my emotions took charge of my actions and thoughts, being prey to them and then experiencing myself as a victim and feeling guilty. You become the witness of your own life and sitting on the big screen, watching life go by, you observe and experience, without judgment, without trying to change anything, just experiencing what already was and is.

MY 3 DAILY JOBS A long time ago I bet on a life where I can be whatever I want, where my inner voice inspires me and tells me “you have to try” because sometimes I feel like I know nothing… and that is the precious thing, not knowing anything to experience everything, even the uncomfortable... I have bet on a life in which I am enough, I already have enough and I do not need to act like a successful person all the time to be deserving of success. I decided to work daily on my 3 aspects of being.

*MY PROFESSIONAL JOB: Love the work that generates the money you earn, we spend most of our lives doing it, love it, enjoy it, change it if you don’t like it and you are no longer happy or fulfilled. At the age of 17 I decided to study law, I became a criminal lawyer and I litigated for 10 years, the day I no longer felt fulfilled and my internal happiness was no longer consistent, I decided to move, change my job and faced with the idea that the fact of existing It gives me the right to be the version that I like the most, reinvent myself under my own standards. I changed my character from a lawyer to a photographer, I also changed the city for the beach and here I am still, enjoying every sunrise and sunset that I have the privilege of feeling, because I am still alive, until the day I decide to move, meanwhile... in the sea, life is tastier!

3.TRAVEL ALONE I have been traveling alone for some years, for 2 months, I want to share this particular one with you, this year I went to Butan, the Kingdom of happiness, in the south of India, located in the Himalayan mountain range, I was there for 15 days and I had never experienced so much loneliness in my life and at the same time so accompanied by it. It is a rough trip, the days are silent and very little activity, we are used to movement, change, life passing by, quickly and without pauses, distractions, friends, conversations, etc., but in Bhutan, time gets in the way , the day freezes and there is not much else to do, be and BE. the blessing of being determined, disciplined and capable of fighting for my dreams, already achieving several of them. I have always strived to be a better person and one of my main goals is to leave something good behind for the people around me.

ver, one of my greatest hobbies is trying new restaurants so you can imagine all the food I have tried hehe, but if I have to choose, I will always say that Mexican and Japanese food are my favorites.

4. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF FAST FASHION? Fast Fashion, like everything in life, has a good and a bad part. What I like about fast fashion is the democratization of fashion, since its birth in the 80s we now all have access to beautiful clothes to be able to develop our personal style in a more attractive way. The bad thing is the pollution generated by the industry by offering so many varied products to an increasingly growing market.

5. HOW DOES YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS WORK? It depends

a lot on what, but generally, ideas come to my mind when I am doing activities that allow me to concentrate, such as: swimming, riding a bike, meditating, or in situations where the opposite happens and I put my mind in action. stress, forcing the brain to be creative.

8. WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE TOP MODELS? Naomi Camp-

bell. Since I was little I have had an obsession with her. She seems magical to me and she has an unmatched beauty.

9. TALKING ABOUT CREATING CONTENT, WHAT DO YOU GET INSPIRED BY? What inspires me most when creating

a video for social networks is being able to impart knowledge to the public, whether it is about Fashion, Trends, History or Personal Image. My goal, always, will be to be able to share something that contributes to people’s lives.

The Four Agreements by Miguel Ángel Ruiz Macías because it is the basic recipe to be good with yourself. If everyone read it and put into practice what it says, the world would be better.

Finally Atomic Habits by James Clear, because he has taught me to organize my ideas and create good habits so that my goals and objectives come true and not just remain an idea.

It’s one of my great passions, whether for television or artists, it’s a lot of fun! There is a lot of work behind it but when you see your designs in a character or in a concert, there is a feeling of a lot of love and joy.

15. WHAT CELEBRITIES DO YOU ADMIRE? I admire many of the artists I have worked with, because I see their effort, talent and dedication. But speaking as a fan, my favorites are Lady Gaga and Meryl Streep. They seem to me to be two women with impressive talent that they push to their most spectacular limits, giving us a variety of characters where it is difficult to get bored of them.

SAINT LAURENT ANTHONY VACCARELLO, CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF SAINT LAURENT, PAID TRIBUTE TO THE HERITAGE OF THE HOUSE FOUNDED BY YVES SAINT LAURENT IN 1962.

Like most of SAINT LAURENT shows, celebrities such as Hailey Bieber, Kate Moss, Demi Moore, Tracee Ellis Ross, Emma Mackey and Austin Butler were seen at front row.

For SS/24, VACCARELLO was inspired by the pioneering women who entered the world of aviation, presenting a dynamic collection based on functionality. Garments were presented with strong and masculine silhouettes in harmony with details full of femininity in jumpsuits with pockets tied at the waist. They accessorized with khaki pants and buttoned tank tops. In terms of accessories, oversized sunglasses, hats and leather gloves added sophistication.

BALMAIN LIKE PHOENIX, BALMAIN WAS REBORN FROM ITS ASHES RESULTING FROM THE THEFT BEFORE PRESENTING AT PARIS FASHION WEEK. At the end, all the cortisol and other stress transmitters spread in the bodies of the staff members of BALMAIN turned out to be anecdotal. DIOR MARIA GRAZIA CHIURI, CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF DIOR, PRESENTED A COLLECTION WITH FEMININITY AS A PRIMARY SOURCE OF INSPIRATION. DIOR show took place in the middle of a scenographic video installation by the artist ELENA BELLANTONI where slogans were projected as the atmosphere of a catwalk in bright pink and yellow colors. In this context of saturated colors, DIOR’S garments contrasted with neutral colors. Opening looks saw lace fabrics tied together forming elegant sheer dresses, while blazers flaunted the female form with cinched waists. Tulle offered a feminine finish to later dresses, while several long black coats, layered over collared white shirts. Many blouses left one shoulder exposed, while skirts fell below the knee. MARIA GRAZIA CHIURI captured subtle, clean-cut patterns on blazers, coats and skirts, all of which found balance with monochromatic underlayers. Utilitarianism and the search for functionality was applied in nylon vests and jackets with multiple pockets and dual-function closures, while minimalism was fundamental in a series of single-tone dresses and coats. Gray denim was part of a jacket and shirt combo and the fabric reappeared on a pair of knee-length shorts.

BORN IN TIJUANA, TANYA GREW UP SURROUNDED

BY CREATIVITY, ESPECIALLY DUE TO THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF HER MOTHER. Her prodigious artistic talent was supported early by providing TANYA with additional studies in fashion illustration at Ibero University when she was just nine years old. Her schoolbooks during these initial years where bursting with sketches and drawings that flowed from her non-stop imagination.

TANYA moved to Mexico City for high school.

Immediately entranced by the city’s enormity, she immersed herself in every cultural opportunity that it provided. It was also during this time that TANYA began exploring painting and developing the unusual compositional technique that eventually became her signature style. Following high school, TANYA obtained her BA in Product Design at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara and also attended the Escuela de Bellas Artes in San Miguel de Allende.

In the early nineties, TANYA moved to Los Cabos when it was still considered a small fishing town. Considered one of the first artists of the Baja Art Movement, her work in this period often featured indigenous people, and traditional flora and fauna from the area. During this time, TANYA’S reputation grew and she began establishing her presence as a professional artist.

In the early 2000’s TANYA moved to the US where she worked and studied throughout the

country, including Arizona, California, Maine and Vermont. It was also during this time that TANYA began experimenting in interior design along with her art. One of her largest and most notable projects was producing furniture, art and accessories for the Four Seasons Scottsdale remodel. In 2010, TANYA returned to Los Cabos where she founded Studio TT Art School & Gallery which was the area’s first formal school of art.

In ‘TUBULAR BELLS’ by Mike Oldflied, with the exception of some choruses, there is not a single song with lyrics.

Richard Branson was never comfortable with the idea and pressured Oldflied to include a singing part on the album. Oldfield, irritated, agreed to include ‘The Caveman’ as a clear sign of protest. ‘Caveman’ alludes to ‘Piltdown Man’, the controversial discovery of a primitive skeleton in Sussex, United Kingdom, in 1912, where supposedly the skull of a hominid had been found that could be the “missing link.” of the human evolutionary chain. The discovery turned out to be a fraud.

Oldfield added that “sung” part alluding to the babbling and grunting of a primitive hominid, particularly expressing his dissatisfaction with the pressure from Branson, who apparently understood the message and did not question Mike’s creative decisions again.

STRUCTURE. ‘TUBULAR BELLS’ is made up of two pieces of music: ‘Tubular Bells- Pt. I’ lasting 26:01 minutes and ‘Tubular Bells- Pt. II’ lasting 23:17 minutes. In both parts an endless number of melodies are developed, where several ideas are introduced such as the absence of songs: the so-called ‘Master of Ceremonies’ and ‘The Caveman’ mentioned above. The end of the work is an arrangement of a traditional song titled ‘The Sailor’s Hornpipe’, of which several versions were recorded, one of them with the voice of Vivian Stanshall drunkenly touring the premises of The Manor while he recounted his walk.

SUCCESS WITHOUT HAPPINESS. Despite the sudden success of ‘TUBULAR BELLS’ thanks to the exposure of ‘THE EXORCIST’, Oldfield was going through a difficult personal time. When ‘TUBULAR BELLS’ was climbing the popularity charts, Mike Oldfield was in full mourning for the death of his mother, so the media overexposure resulting from its success overwhelmed him. That time was so traumatic, it marked the brilliant British musician’s relationship with the vox populi, which has been rocky throughout his career.

TERRORIZING THE WORLD. ‘‘THE EXORCIST’ brings to mind the repetitive and incisive melody that identifies the film. ‘TUBULAR BELLS’ was not composed expressly for the film and what is used in it is a small fragment of a deeper work. Director William Friedkin found ‘TUBULAR BELLS’ almost by serendipity. He had rejected a previous score and had run out of time to hire another composer to take on the task.

With time running out, he spent three days rummaging through Warner’s music stock looking for something resembling a lullaby, until he found the needle in the haystack.

“After listening and discarding everything after a few bars, I came across a song called ‘TUBULAR BELLS’ by a certain Mike Oldfield on a new British label, Virgin Records. After the opening, which I found disturbing, the rest of the song was a kind of demonstration of the sound produced by several bells. But, that opening was perfect,” Friedkin once commented.

THE CENTURY OF NOSFERATU THE VAMPIRE FIGURE HAS TRANSCENDED GENERATIONS THROUGH THE FOLKLORE OF SUPERSTITION AND THE INSATIABLE NEED OF THE HUMAN MIND TO GIVE PHYSICAL FORM TO OUR DEEPEST FEARS AND PROVIDE AN EXPLANATION FOR THE UNEXPLAINABLE. In 1897, Bram Stoker brought the most famous vampire of all to life: DRACULA. Is for the success of this novel that the vampire figure remains alive in contemporary culture. There is no way to conceive the vampire figure without thinking of DRACULA. However, today I will not talk about DRACULA. In this lines I will discuss his illegitimate son, who celebrates a century of existence. I am talking about one of the greatests and influential horror films of history: ‘NOSFERATU.’ The vampire myth is present in various cultures around the world, from East to West.

However, the vampiric figure in contemporary global culture has Slavic origins, describing a vampire as a resurrected corpse, a bloodsucker, and a creature afraid of fire and the sun. The word “vampire” comes from the term “vampir” in Slavic and German languages. We could say that the name ‘DRACULA’ supplanted and redefined this term, adding superficiality to the mythological creature.

While BRAM STOKER’S novel was a commercial success and brought fame to the vampire figure, the cultural impact would not have been the same without adaptations to the big screen, including the debut and farewell work of the German independent film studio Prana Film: ‘NOSFERATU: A SYMPHONY OF HORROR’ (1922).

NOSFERATU: A SYMPHONY OF HORROR (1922) In 1921, Enrico Dieckmann and the artist Albin Grau founded the German film studio Prana Film. Grau had a fascination with the occult and the supernatural, and his cinematic vision revolved around these two themes. One day, while reminiscing about an anecdote from his time in the war in the winter of 1916, where a Serbian farmer told him that his father was a vampire, Grau had the idea to make a vampire film. Grau and Dieckmann entrusted the task of writing the script to Henrik Galeen, who was supposed to draw inspiration from BRAM STOKER’S novel to create the script, even though they had not acquired the rights to the BUBBLES&CHERRIES

work. Ignoring this situation, Galeen wrote the script, making changes to the plot, changing the name of DRACULA to COUNT ORLOK, HARKER to HUTTER, rendering DOCTOR VAN HELSING an irrelevant and pathetic character named PROFESSOR BULWER, and adding a new theme to the plot: female sacrifice, represented by ELLEN, HUTTER’S wife, who offers herself to the monster to destroy it (this is not part of the original novel). The setting (WHITBY in the original novel) was replaced by the fictional port city of WISBORG. The title ‘DRACULA’ also had to change, replaced by ‘NOSFERATU,’ a curious word of uncertain origin. The first theory about the origin of this word is that it comes from Romanian, being a synonym for the word “vampire,” although there is no evidence of its use in that language. The second theory is that it comes from the Greek word “NOSOPHOROS,” meaning “disease carrier,” which is fitting for a character embodying the Black Plague. However, neither of these two etymologies is fully accepted, and it is most likely a literary invention.

The direction of the film was handled by the German director FRIEDRICH WILHELM MURNAU, who did not have a large budget for production and had to make the most of natural light, locations, and a single camera. Most of the film was shot outdoors, contrasting with the claustrophobic and distorted expressionist sets of German horror cinema of that era (as exemplified by ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’), giving the scenes a more naturalistic appearance reminiscent of 19th-century romantic paintings. The visual horror of this film does not rely on heavy shadows, distorted figures, or ugly faces, but rather on the distortion of the everyday. Horror arises from familiarity, not abnormality. MURNAU draws a parallel between the creature NOSFERATU, portrayed by actor MAX SCHRECK, and the gloomy architecture of the film. The creature’s languid body, sharp nose and ears, and somber appearance blend perfectly with the Gothic architecture of the Carpathian castle. The creature is always presented in ruined and desolate settings, creating a visual metaphor for its loneliness and its position between life and death. Have you ever felt fear when looking at the arch of your door at midnight? Have you ever had an unsettling feeling that someone is watching you hi82

dden in the darkness or through the window while you sleep? These fears are owed to NOSFERATU. MURNAU uses these techniques to disturb the viewer, techniques that were replicated ad nauseam in horror cinema in the decades that followed, even to this day, although few have done it well. There is another resource used in the film that even Alfred Hitchcock himself would borrow for his classic horror film ‘Psycho’: the shadow cast on the wall. I’m sure you’ve seen the typical scene where we don’t see the monster or the killer, but we see their shadow. This ominous sequence is MURNAU’S creation, warning us that the creature is about to strike. The techniques used by MURNAU, though primitive and crude, laid the foundation for the horror genre on the big screen and television.

The music was composed by HANS ERDMANN, who titled his work ‘FANTASTIC-ROMANTIC SUITE.’ ERDMANN’S composition defies common associations with what we consider horrifying, grotesque, and disturbing. His inspiration was based more on nature and German fantastic and romantic folklore, in line with the sentiment that MURNAU sought to reflect.

Unfortunately, the outcome of this work is not as good as the reputation it garnered in the years to come.

FLORENCE BALCOMBE, STOKER’S widow, received an anonymous letter from Berlin. In it, there was a program from a film festival that had taken place at the Berlin Zoo in 1922. The film had been screened at the festival, and the program described the movie as “a loose adaptation of BRAM STOKER’S work, ‘DRACULA’.”

This infuriated Florence, leading her to sue Prana Film for copyright infringement.

Florence won the case, and the court ordered the destruction of all existing copies of the film. If it hadn’t been for the visionary character of the distributors responsible (pun FALL ISSUE 2023

A SHORTCUT TO AVOID COPYRIGHT ISSUES TO BECOME A POP CULTURE ICON intended) for distributing this great work, creating copies of the film copies, the legend of NOSFERATU would have died, ironically, at dawn the day after its premiere.

NOSFERATU: PHANTOM DER NACHT (1979) Fifty-seven years later, the young director of the New German Cinema, WERNER HERZOG, brought MURNAU’S cult work out of the crypt to pay homage to it and elevate NOSFERATU in popular culture. Like MURNAU, HERZOG had to deal with a limited budget and a production team of only sixteen people, but with an advantage that MURNAU did not have: the rights to STOKER’S novel had expired, allowing the use of the original names. However, HERZOG’S intention was not to create a new adaptation of the novel but to honor what he considered the best German film ever made. A chilling sequence of shots of mummies opens the film, which turn out to be the mummies of Guanajuato, Mexico. The scene is accompanied by a dark choir and a disconcerting melody that create unease and intrigue in the viewer, composed by the experimental German band POPOL VUH. HERZOG’S work is very faithful to the original but not lacking in interpretative creativity. High contrasts, desaturated colors, and volumetric shadows create gloomy and ominous settings consistent with the cruel and unredeemable existence of the vampire. The film’s pace is sensational. Despite being a linear story, it does not bore or have dull moments, thanks to HERZOG’S superior editing, though it would be unfair to criticize MURNAU’S original editing, as there is a half-century gap in knowledge, techniques, and cinematic technology between the two works.

The appearance of the creature, portrayed by HERZOG’S favorite actor, KLAUS KINSKI, is identical to the original, and KINSKI’S performance is marvelous. The plot diverges from the original in the climax, with significant narrative changes. HERZOG emphasizes his critique of German society at the time, using rats and the plague as symbols of decay, primarily moral decay. in the creature, creating a feeling toward the monster. The count is a victim of a punitive reality, and this suffering is portrayed on screen with the creature’s pathos in its need for human blood to stay alive, its need for feeling and being loved, and its desperate desire to die, generating a sense of pity rather than rejection and fear. Overall, HERZOG creates a very complete work, remaining faithful to the one he pays tribute to but infusing it with his personality and authorship.

The film was a box office success and well-received by critics, who called it a fitting tribute to MURNAU’S work. 20TH CENTURY FOX requested an English-language version for distribution in the United States, ‘NOSFERATU THE VAMPIRE’. Scenes were shot in both German and English, although the original German scenes are superior, as the actors were more convincing when speaking their native language. ‘NOSFERATU: PHANTOM DER NACHT’/‘NOSFERATU THE VAMPIRE’ did justice to a masterpiece lost in time, elevating it from an obscure and shadowy film, known to only a few connoisseurs, to a historical classic of the horror genre. As I mentioned at the beginning of this text, the vampire figure in today’s popular culture would not exist if it weren’t for this mythical character created by the minds of four Germans (GRAU, DIECKMANN, GALEEN, AND MURNAU), whose intention was merely to make a vampire movie. The cultural impact generated by their work and influence would have surpassed the imagination of any of these four visionary filmmakers if only they were alive to see it.

Unfortunately, most of the time they decide to adopt first and then come to visit us.

In advance, you should consider aspects such as: characteristics and space needs of the breed of dog you wish to adopt, dedicate time to visits to the veterinarian, consider preventive medicine, nutrition, vaccines, deworming, dental cleaning, sterilization, etc.

DENTAL CLEANING AS A TEACHING PRINCIPLE The support of the veterinarian is required to cover each of these items. To give just one example, I will refer to dental cleaning: this is a process in which the support and perseverance of the guardians is needed to “teach” the animal that dental cleaning is not an aggressive act and even, over time , they can relate it as an approach, this way, when they attend the professional cleaning they will not be so stressed.

Dental cleaning begins with massaging the lips and then rubbing the teeth with a dental towel to finally use a special toothbrush and toothpaste. That is the best way to avoid, or delay, performing dental prophylaxis, in which dogs are subjected to general anesthesia.

Although it may seem like the decision to adopt a dog is complicated, it all translates into a family choice in which responsible ownership is crucial for our pet to have a long, happy and healthy life.

DR. ROBERTO CARLOS LOPEZ KONSHOT 1. HOW WAS YOUR JOURNEY IN BECOMING A PLASTIC SURGEON? I obtained my medical degree from the

National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) after six years of rigorous study. Subsequently, I pursued a four-year residency in general surgery. Following that, I had the privilege of training at Gea González Hospital, where I served as the chief resident in my final year. Gea González has always been an exemplar in the field of plastic surgery, renowned for its academic excellence and the diversity of cases it handles, coming from all corners of Mexico and Central America. During my time there, I had the opportunity to work on exceedingly rare and complex cases.

After completing my residency, I went on to do two fellowships at Angeles del Pedregal Hospital, specializing in body contouring and craniofacial surgery.

2. WHAT ARE THE PROCEDURES YOU PERFORM MOST FREQUENTLY? The bulk of my work involves body con-

touring procedures, such as abdominoplasties (Tummy Tuck), liposculptures, breast surgeries (both with and without implants), implant removals, and a range of facial and neck procedures, including facelifts, neck lifts, blepharoplasty, and buccal fat removal, among others.

procedures, interventions can begin at birth, such as in the case of cleft lips or other congenital malformations. Regarding aesthetic procedures, the age varies significantly. For example, otoplasty (ear surgery) can be done at around seven years of age when children develop a degree of self-critique. However, popular procedures among adolescent females, like rhinoplasty and breast reduction, are generally best performed once their growth has concluded, which typically occurs around the ages of 16 or 17.

4. WHAT IS YOUR VIEW ON AESTHETIC DEVICES AND TECHNOLOGY? I consider them to be invaluable tools

for enhancing one’s appearance in today’s world, as long as they feature state-of-the-art technology and are applied to the right candidates. Regrettably, in many centers, an overreliance on these technologies often leads to misleading patients into believing they can achieve surgical-like results without actual surgery. This is an entirely false notion. Ideally, patients should seek expert evaluations from a qualified plastic surgeon before embarking

on any such treatment. A consultation can spare patients from substantial disappointment, financial loss, and the wastage of time.

5. WHY DO BUTTOCK AUGMENTATION SURGERIES OFTEN RESULT IN AN UNNATURAL APPEARANCE, AS PERCEIVED BY MANY WOMEN? WHAT GOES WRONG IN THESE CASES? In my opinion,

poor outcomes in buttock augmentation surgeries often arise due to a combination of factors. These may include the patient’s characteristics and the surgical technique employed. Generally, buttock implants tend to be problematic because they can shift, become noticeable, sag, and lead to issues for the patient. A more effective approach is to inject fat beneath the skin, bypassing the muscle, to increase buttock size while preserving a natural appearance, as long as the volume injected remains within reasonable limits.

6. FROM WHAT AGE CAN ONE UNDERGO NECK AND FACE LIFT SURGERY? Typically, facelift and neck lift procedu-

res are most commonly sought after the age of approximately sixty. However, an increasing number of younger patients are seeking these surgeries for reasons such as significant weight loss, hormonal treatments, or the incongruence between their facial and bodily appearance.

HISTORY FOUNDATION. In prehistoric times, during the early Copper Age, human presence began in what is now JERUSALEM. The germ of the Holy City began on Mount Ophel. JERUSALEM in its present location was founded on those Ophel settlements by the Jebusites, a West Semitic people. It is around 1600 BC when according to the Scriptures, ABRAHAM was going to sacrifice his son ISAAC as proof of his faith and obedience to YAHWEH and was stopped by an angel, who gave the patriarch a lamb to be sacrificed on the altar.. Jewish tradition establishes that the place where this founding myth occurred, MOUNT MORIAH, is identified, along with MOUNT ZION, as the site where the TEMPLE was built and which is known today as the TEMPLE MOUNT. THE OLDEST MENTIONS. The oldest written sources where JERUSALEM is mentioned belong to Ancient Egypt, where several mentions are made in what are known as TEXTS OF EXECRATION, writings related to the enemies of the Egyptian kingdom. It also appears in the AMARNA LETTERS, an archive of official and diplomatic correspondence between ancient Egypt and its neighboring peoples and vassals. The oldest mention of ISRAEL is found on the MERENPTAH STELE.

THE JERUSALEM CHRONOLOGY

DAVID AND SOLOMON. In 1004 BC, KING DAVID conquered the Jebusites and therefore the city became the capital of the United Kingdom of Israel. Remains of the Davidic city are found on Mount Ohpel, where, as we mentioned, the city was founded. His son SOLOMON extended the city, built new fortifications and his main architectural work was the FIRST TEMPLE between 950 and 940 BC. The TEMPLE was the most important sanctuary for Judaism where, after the wandering period of the tabernacles, the ‘Ark of the Covenant’ and the ‘Tables of the Law’ were protected, which according to tradition, MOSES received on Mount Sinai.

SEPARATE KINGDOMS AND NEBUCHADENDEZZAR. When SOLOMON died, the kingdom was separated into two, with the KINGDOM OF ISRAEL in the north and the KINGDOM OF JUDAH in the south, with Rehoboam, son and heir of SOLOMON as king and with JERUSALEM as capital. The Kingdom

of Judah was not very extensive territorially, no more than JERUSALEM and its surroundings, but it became prosperous. Judah had great profits as the main supplier of olive oil to the Assyrian Empire and then the Babylonian Empire of which it gradually became a vassal to the point that the last kings of Judah were chosen from Babylon. 19 kings succeeded Rehoboam until Zedekiah tried to rebel against

the Babylonian power by failing to pay their respective tributes and sought an alliance with Egypt to which Nebuchadnezzar II, king of Babylon, responded with absolute fury, conquering and destroying Jerusalem, including the Temple in 586, resulting in the Jewish exile in Babylon, which contrary to what tradition holds, was not of the Jewish people as a whole but of its elites. It is believed that it is within this exile that the writing of the Holy Scriptures begins.

THE END OF THE EXILE AND THE SECOND TEMPLE. In 539 BC. The Persian king Cyrus II “The Great” conquers Babylon and turns the Persian Achaemenid Empire into the main power in the area. Cyrus allowed the return of the Jewish communities deported to Judah; They returned to JERUSALEM and rebuilt the city and the TEMPLE. Construction of the Second Temple was completed in 516 BC. Around 445 a. C., the Achaemenid emperor Artaxerxes I issued a decree allowing the reconstruction of the city and its walls. JERUSALEM regained its role as the capital of Judah and the cultural epicenter of the Jewish people.

HELLENISTIC. At the end of the 4th century BC. Alexander II of Macedonia, ‘Alexander the Great’, conquered the Achaemenid Persian Empire and therefore became the new foreign power to subjugate the lands of Israel and Judah, but thanks to a skillful maneuver by the Levites, the Jewish priestly caste, who sweetened After Alexander heard about prophecies that spoke of the coming of a great king incarnated in him, JERUSALEM did not suffer violence from its new conqueror. When Alexander died, his generals divided up the empire and the Levant came under the power of the Ptolemies who ruled from Egypt. The Seleucids tried to build effigies of the Greek gods in the TEMPLE OF JERUSALEM, sparking the rebellion of the Maccabees who defeated the forces of Antiochus. The revolt had such

momentum that in 160 BC. Under the leadership of Judas Maccabeus and his brothers, the Jews fought for their political independence, which they achieved in 142 BC. Hasmonean dynasty ascended, with JERUSALEM as its capital, keeping Israel independent for a century until 63 BC. As a consequence of the victory of Gnaeus Pompey the Great in the Mithridatic Wars and the Roman intervention in the civil war between the Hasmonean aspirants, Pompey conquered JERUSALEM and the land of Israel for the Roman Republic, creating a puppet state where, after controlling all the centers of insurrection of pretenders to the Hasmonean throne, they named the Idumean Herod as King of Judea.

HEROD AND JESUS. Herod expanded and beautified

the city with towers and palaces in a clear intention to Romanize the area and restored and extended the Temple. According to Christian tradition, it is under the reign of Herod that JESUS OF NAZARETH was born. When Herod died, Rome took direct control of the area, creating the province of Judea, and Herod’s heirs had to content themselves with being mere figureheads under the authority of a Roman procurator. Under that period, the true Jewish authority was the SANHEDRIN OF JERUSALEM, led by the High Priest of the Temple and who had the greatest dealings with the Roman authority. Under the leadership of the High Priest YOSEF BAR CAYAFÁ (Caiaphas) and the Roman Prosecutor PONTIUS PILATE, there was, during Pesach, the triumphal entry, capture in the Garden of Gethsemane, the trial and subsequent execution by crucifixion of JESUS OF NAZARETH in Golgotha, a hill outside JERUSALEM. The followers of JESUS continued to preach his teachings, to the point of calling the first Christian council in the year 50, known as the Council of Jerusalem, where the separation of early Christianity from Judaism was consummated. The apostles and first Christians fled JERUSALEM due to persecutions and spread their doctrine to all corners of the Roman Empire.

DIASPORA. In 66, the first Jewish-Roman war

broke out, resulting in the siege and destruction of JERUSALEM and the TEMPLE by the Roman legions commanded by Titus. The only thing left standing from the second temple is what is known today as the WAILING WALL, one of the most sacred places in Judaism. The Emperor Hadrian drew up a plan for the reconstruction of JERUSALEM under the Roman style, even changing its name to call it Aelia Capitolina, a 107

situation that sparked another Jewish revolt, led by Simon Bar Kochba between the years 132 and 135. Rome crushed this. rebellion that resulted in the deportation of the Jews from their land, known as the diaspora, and Hadrian erasing the name of JUDEA and reorganizing the territory, naming it SYRIA-PALESTINE, in allusion to the Philistines, the ancient enemies of the Jews in the times of the Judges and the old kingdom. Jews were prohibited from entering Aelia-Capitolina under penalty of death with the exception of once a year, the TISHA-BA’V, the national mourning for the destruction of the temples and other tragedies suffered by Jews in the future.

CHRISTIAN CITY. In 313, Constantine the Great is-

sued the Edict of Milan, lifting the restriction against Christianity. Over time it would become the official religion of the Roman State. Beginning in the second decade of the 4th century, the first Christian temples and sacred sites began to be built in JERUSALEM, such as the CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE. From this period until the fall of the Byzantine Empire, heir to Rome’s eastern dominions, JERUSALEM was a practically Christian city. Already in the period of the early Middle Ages, JERUSALEM was the seat of one of the most important Christian patriarchates along with Alexandria, Constantinople, Antioch and Rome. In the mid-4th century, the Roman emperor Julian, known to Christians as ‘The Apostasy,’ implemented a series of anti-Christian policies throughout the empire to reestablish paganism and remove Christianity from its role as state religion. In an effort to attack Christians doctrinally, he tried to rebuild the TEMPLE OF JERUSALEM for the third time, but his work ultimately failed.

It was the last attempt to rebuild the TEMPLE.

HISTORY SASSANIDS. In 614, the Sassanian Persian Empire took Syria, Palestine and other eastern territories from the Byzantine Empire, conquering JERUSALEM after a 21-day siege that culminated in a great massacre of the population and the destruction of many temples. On the Sassanid side, there were many Jewish fighters motivated to recover the city and in exchange they were promised an autonomous JERUSALEM. This conquest and Jewish recovery was short-lived, since Heraclius, the Byzantine emperor, recovered the territory and Jerusalem became Byzantine again, but not for long.

AL-QUDS. In 638 the Arabs led by Umar ibn Al Khattab conquered JERUSALEM as well as all of Syria, Palestine, the Levant and Egypt, expelling what remained of Roman and Byzantine power in the area. These Arab conquerors already professed a new faith that venerated the same god as the Jews and Christians, established theologically and doctrinally by a prophet originally from Mecca who had died just 6 years before, Islam. Originally, Muslims prayed in the direction of JERUSALEM, recognizing the sanctity of the TEMPLE MOUNT, where according to Islamic tradition, the PROPHET MUHAMMAD ascended to the heavens from the same rock where God created the first man, Adam, where ABRAHAM, known as IBRAHIM in Arabic, was going to sacrifice his son, who in Islam, the son was not ISAAC but his firstborn, ISHMAEL, patriarch of the Arab people and from where the divine presence was stronger and the KODESH HAKODASHIM, SANCTASANCTORUM in Latin, the HOLY OF HOLIES in English, the most sacred site of the TEMPLE. On that rock, at the end of the 7th century the Umayyad caliph Abs al Malik built one of the most sacred, symbolic and particularly beautiful places in JERUSALEM and the World, The DOME OF THE ROCK, and on the TEMPLE MOUNT, what is known as known as the ESPLANADE OF THE MOSQUES, with the AL-AQSA MOSQUE, the DOME OF THE CHAIN and 4 minarets, occupying for Islam the most sacred area for Judaism and where, according to its doctrine, it is the only place where the TEMPLE, which, well, obviously, would cause problems. JERUSALEM would begin to be known in Arabic as URSHALIM AL-QUDS, “The Holy One.” DEUS VULT. In the early 11th century, in 1073, Jerusalem was conquered by another Islamic power, but not Arab but Turkish, the Seljuks, who dominated an extensive empire that gave them brief dominion over the Levant for BUBBLES&CHERRIES

The saint was reconquered by the Arabs, this time from the Fatimid dynasty, although it was only a sigh because in 1099, the Christians of Western Europe led by Godfrey of Bouillon, Bohemond of Taranto and Raymond of Toulouse, harangued by the Pope’s Deus Vult slogan Urban II conquered JERUSALEM after a bloody siege, initiating a fundamental historical period in the future of relations between the eastern and western Mediterranean, the Crusades. With the Christian triumph of the First Crusade in 1099, the Kingdom of Jerusalem was established as a typical secular kingdom of Western Europe. This kingdom lacked territorial and population depth and depended too much on the outside in matters of defense and economy. Saladin, Sultan of Syria and Egypt and founder of the Ayyubid caliphate who recovered JERUSALEM for Islam in 1187 after a long siege and fierce Christian defense commanded by Balian of Ibelin. Saladin spared the lives of the 60,000 Frankish Christian inhabitants on the condition that they leave the Holy Land and after paying a ransom, and allowed the original Orthodox Christians to stay in the city. Under the sovereignty of Saladin and the Ayyubids, markets, houses and hostels were built for pilgrims but after the wear and tear suffered in the third crusade, Saladin and the king of England, Richard I Lionheart, the city once again allowed Christian pilgrimages. JERUSALEM would not return to Christian control, with the exception of a brief period in which the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II and Sultan Al-Kamil agreed to the peaceful surrender of the holy city in exchange for the Muslim holy places remaining under Ayyubid control. At this time, in 1204, the Sephardic rabbi, philosopher, doctor and astronomer originally from Al-Andalus, Moisés ben Maimón, better known as Maimonides, visited the TEMPLE MOUNT and worked on its contributions, considered canonical, within the Judaism. Maimonides was not the first European Jew to arrive in the ancestral capital of his people and faith in that period, since between 1210 and 1258, 300 English and French rabbis were the first to leave in an organized manner to JERUSALEM and begin to work on the idea of make the Jews return to their ancestral home. Frederick II could not maintain control of the city for long and in 1244, JERUSALEM was sacked and conquered by the Khezmite Tatars, fierce Muslim horsemen originally from Persia who in turn were expelled by the Ayyubids a few 108

years later, in a series of conflicts and struggles that greatly decimated the population of Jerusalem. In 1260, JERUSALEM was conquered by the Mamluks, Muslim warriors of Caucasian, Slavic and Altaic origin who went from slave warriors to forming a dynasty, but when they conquered Jerusalem they had to face on the one hand the Crusader attacks and on the other the Mongol hordes. , earthquakes and the plague. When in 1267, another Hispanic Jew, Mose ben Nahman, traveled from his native Aragon to JERUSALEM, he found only a city in ruins, with only 2000 inhabitants among which there were only 2 Jewish families, 300 Christians and the rest Muslims. The Ottoman Empire was, since the Roman Empire, the most stable power that took control of Palestine and therefore of JERUSALEM and the city underwent a profound renewal, modernization, stability, prosperity and peace initiated by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. builder of the walls that we can see today. In 18th century, the Aliyah began – waves of migration back to the land of Israel – of Orthodox Hasidic Jews originating from Central, Eastern Europe and the Baltic, creating population centers that little by little made the Jewish demographic grow in area. In 1872, there was another great wave of Jewish migration, the Yemenite Aliyah, where thousands of Jews from Yemen settled in JERUSALEM, further increasing the Jewish population. In the mid-19th century, the Ottomans built the first paved road that connected JERUSALEM with the port of Jaffa while the railway arrived in 1892, which greatly facilitated and encouraged pilgrimages to the holy city.

THE (HARMFUL) BRITISH MANDATE At the beginning of the 20th century, in the First World War, the British army took the city after a fierce battle against the Ottoman troops, thus culminating the Palestine and Sinai campaign. With the fall and dissolution of the Ottoman Empire as a result of the First World War, the League of Nations handed over the territories of Iraq, Transjordan and Palestine to the United Kingdom, thus creating the BRITISH MANDATE OF PALESTINE in 1917. The inability and negligence of the British goverment to exercise social control and the cunning ignorance of agreements made with both the Jews and the Arabs, made the pressures reach an extreme point that in 1929, there was a great massacre of Jews in JERUSALEM and Hebron resulting in the birth of Jewish paramilitary self-defense groups that had tensions with the occupying British troops. Between 1922 and 1948, waves of Jewish migration to the Holy Land caused the Jewish population to rise from approximately 50,000 to around 165,000, and at that time, there was relative peace and collaboration between the British and Palestinian Jews in the fight against Nazi Germany. On July 22, 1946, tensions between the British and Jewish nationalist groups came to a head when Irgun, a terrorist and Jewish nationalist paramilitary organization, attacked the south wing of the King David Hotel where the authorities’ base was located. The attack was in retaliation for the restrictions that the United Kingdom imposed on the immigration of Jews to Palestine and the persecution that Royal Navy ships carried out against ships carrying Jewish migrants. THE STATE OF ISRAEL AND THE ARAB WORLD. A RELATIONSHIP OF CHAOS. On May 14, 1948, one day before the de-

parture of the British authorities and troops, David Ben Gurion read the Declaration of Independence of the STATE OF ISRAEL in the Tel Aviv Museum. The immediate response of its Arab neighbors: Egypt, Syria, Transjordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and various paramilitary groups, was the total war known as the Arab-Israeli War of 1948. The troops of the nascent State of ISRAEL ignored the CORPUS SEPARATUM status of JERUSALEM given by the UN and occupied WEST JERUSALEM as well as much of the territory assigned by the UN for the Arab state, while the forces of the Kingdom of Jordan occupied the so-called ‘Old City’ of JERUSALEM and the part known as the West Bank, which was also destined for the Arab state. In November of that bloody 1948, Israel and Jordan signed an armistice in 1949, demarcating their limits to the extent that their respective military advance had allowed. At the United Nations General Assembly on December 9, 1949, JERUSALEM’S status as CORPUS SEPARATUM was reaffirmed. The STATE OF ISRAEL claims JERUSALEM as its capital since the declaration of its independence and Jordan officially annexed East JERUSALEM in 1950 and declared it in 1953 as its second capital along with Amman. In 1967, after a rise in tensions between ISRAEL and JORDAN, IRAQ and the UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC, as the union between EGYPT and SYRIA was known at that time, the 6-Day War broke out, with Israeli troops making a preemptive and devastating attack that resulted in the Israeli occupation of the GAZA STRIP, SINAI, the GOLAN HEIGHTS, the WEST BANK and EAST JERUSALEM, reunifying the city under the same authority. With this forceful and effective military campaign, ISRAEL seemed to have taken the blow of authority at the international table, gaining territorial depth, controlling strategic and tactically advantageous points on the borders and consolidating JERUSALEM as its capital. In the end, it was very difficult for the Israeli authorities to control the new conquests and despite the offer of peace and the fact that religious freedom is guaranteed by the state of ISRAEL and that the Arabic language is considered official, it was impossible to annex the territories. For some, that is the root of their problems, but the reality is that if it were not for THE SEPHPULCRE, THE WALL AND THE ROCK, perhaps JERUSALEM would be non-existent or inconsequential.

CIBELLE HERNANDEZ 1. HOW DO YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH A HIGH-IMPACT SPORT LIKE TRIATHLON? When I fell in love with triathlon, I

fell in love with myself. It was a time of crisis, not knowing what I wanted in life, compounded by the end of a long-term relationship.

Triathlon helped me connect and get to know my body like never before. The discipline and countless hours of individual work helped me discover myself as a woman, and this motivated me to accept myself. Often, we seek external strength when, deep within, we are vulnerable. I was trapped in a crisis of weakness, but I managed to rise and do triathlons.

Such was my determination that I even managed to step onto the podium, becoming the national and later world champion.

2. RUNNING, SWIMMING, OR CYCLING, WHICH DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST? When I began triathlon, my strength lay

in running, but I improved in the other two disciplines. That’s what makes us triathletes; even if we excel in one, winning demands mastery of all three. Currently, my focus is on running.

3. WHAT IS YOUR DAILY TRAINING ROUTINE? My daily training routine varies with the season. These past few weeks have been particularly intense, leading up to a competition next month to close out the year. My routine is primarily running-focused: on Tuesdays, I tackle hill sprints; on Thursdays, I work on speed and pacing; and on Saturdays, I focus on long-distance running, covering up to 2.30 kilometers in total. In addition to running, I swim twice a week, totaling 6000 meters, and engage in mountain biking twice a week, covering roughly 60 kilometers. In total, I train for about 15 hours each week.

4. WHAT IS COMPETITION DAY LIKE, STARTING FROM THE NIGHT BEFORE? Competition day is filled with adre-

naline and excitement, as it’s the moment when months of rigorous training are put to the test. It’s a day of meticulous preparation, including checking the weather, studying the athlete’s manual, reviewing the race courses, collecting race packets, connecting with friends, consuming carefully planned meals, frequent trips to the bathroom, and staying well-hydrated.

The night before the race, I always engage in mental preparation, visualizing every aspect of the race from start to finish. I contemplate how my body will react to the inevitable suffering and how I’ll channel my energy in the face of extreme pain. Visualization is key, always with the goal of winning in mind. The first time I competed, I dreamt of victory, and when I won, I told myself I would repeat that success.

5. WHICH IS MORE DEMANDING, TRIATHLON OR A MARATHON?

Undoubtedly, a marathon is a more grueling test. Contrary to what one might think, the body undergoes more strain when performing a single exercise compared to engaging in multiple activities. The body can adapt more effectively when you switch between different exercises, managing energy and recovery more efficiently. However, focusing solely on running leaves little room for recovery.

6. BESIDES LONG-DISTANCE RUNNING, WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPORTS, BOTH AS A FAN AND A PARTICIPANT? I have always

been passionate about sports, including tennis, water and snow skiing, mountain biking, surfing, polo, and at one point, I even represented my university in soccer.

7. KONA IS THE LIMIT FOR MANY ATHLETES, AND YOU NOT ONLY QUALIFIED BUT WERE VERY COMPETITIVE, FINISHING IN THE TOP 10 . WHAT WAS YOUR PREPARATION FOR KONA LIKE?

Securing a spot in Kona came as a surprise, and it brought immense satisfaction. When I decided to compete in my first Ironman in Woodlands in 2018, my goal was simply to finish, as it’s a monumental challenge when you’re trying something for the first time.

However, as a highly competitive person, visualizing a victory is a challenging task. That’s how I earned my slot to Kona. I decided to give it my all when I found myself in second place in my category, even though my heart rate was too high. I didn’t want to ease up; I wanted to take the risk. That’s how I secured the second-place finish and my ticket to Kona. Kona presented a whole new level of FALL ISSUE 2023

challenge. It involved at least 10 extra hours and double the distance I was used to. It required learning how to consume a significant number of calories during long bike rides. My bike position didn’t facilitate easy digestion, so I had to adapt to avoid vomiting and retain what I consumed. The most challenging aspect was the prospect of training for two Ironman races in a single year, which was difficult and demanding, especially considering family and work commitments. It was a year filled with compromises with my partner to ensure the necessary support. As soon as one set of agreements ended, allowing me to train for Woodlands, the surprise came in October: I had to go to Kona, requiring another process of adaptation and family understanding. I was reaching the dream of every triathlete: the Ironman World Championship, and I couldn’t let go of that dream.

8. HOW DO YOU PROCESS THE EMOTIONAL ASPECT OF BEING A IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPION? Becoming a world

champion isn’t merely a dream; it’s about daily hard work and commitment. I’m a person who strives to turn her dreams into reality, working diligently towards those goals. While the journey may be filled with setbacks, my determination keeps me focused. I believe it’s also a life choice. Those of us who aspire to win have an innate desire to stay at the top, continually pushing ourselves to achieve more. Becoming a world champion was a dream I worked on every single day, believing in my own capacity to make it happen.

9. HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN COMPETITIVE SPIRIT? The key to sustaining a competitive spirit is never to stop aiming higher. This means constantly seeking growth in everything we do. My approach has been to change routines and the types of competition I engage in. While triathlon took me to the highest levels of the sport, staying there would mean stagnation.

Therefore, I have always embraced new challenges. Trying something new may make me feel uncertain and uneasy, but it is precisely in facing these fears that we discover ourselves and grow.

10. YOU’RE A MOTHER AND AN ENTREPRENEUR. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO PEOPLE WHO THINK THESE RESPONSIBILITIES LIMIT ACHIEVING FULFILLMENT AND SUCCESS? In reality, there

are no limits to what one can achieve. When we align our lives with our passions, dreams, and intense living, we discover an incredible sense of fulfillment. This is how I prefer to

channel my energy into everything I envision and set out to accomplish. I believe it’s better to act and later say, “Maybe I shouldn’t have,” than to wonder, “What if I had tried?”

With this perspective, I don’t merely dream of things; I have the means to turn them into reality. This is why I always dreamed of starting my own company, Aviglass, which we established 16 years ago. I envisioned having a partner who would help me achieve all my dreams together, enabling us to grow with our children and create the strongest family team.

Thanks to my husband, I’ve been able to push forward and bring out the best version of myself. My advice is always to have the ability to discern what you want to do and what your greatest passion in life is; everything else will fall into place along the way. The greatest fulfillment we can experience in life occurs when we indulge in what we love the most.

11. IS LOS CABOS AN IDEAL LOCATION FOR AN ATHLETE’S DEVELOPMENT? Los Cabos is the perfect place for

high-performance athletes and nature enthusiasts. During the 42 years I lived in Mexico City, I never had the opportunity to train under the conditions that Los Cabos offers. City dwellers usually need to leave town to cycle for 6 hours or use stationary bikes. In Los Cabos, I can start my bike ride from home and train wherever and for as long as I like, surrounded by inspirational landscapes.

12. WHICH CYCLING ROUTE OFFERS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE?

I particularly enjoy road cycling. It allows for high-speed riding on flat terrain, attacking hills, and savoring the satisfaction of downhill descents. I find it incredibly fun due to the variety of terrains.

13. UNDER WHAT CONDITIONS DO YOU MOST ENJOY RUNNING?

During my days of sprinting in Olympic-distance triathlons and marathons, I loved running very fast, maintaining an average pace of about 4 minutes per kilometer. Feeling like you’re airborne more than grounded is a pure delight. Now, at the age of 50, I appreciate the ability to run for hours in the mountains without the need to sprint. I enjoy being surrounded by nature and paying close attention to the path I tread, savoring the present.

14. HOW FLEXIBLE ARE YOU WITH YOUR FOOD CHOICES? During training, I eat what my body craves. I consume five meals a day, incorporating a variety of foods such as vegetables, proteins (including chicken, fish, turkey, and goat or feta

cheese), a range of grains, berries, smoothies, and pasta. I tend to avoid eggs and red meat, as my body doesn’t tolerate them well, and I steer clear of high-fat foods.

16. HOW PREVENT INJURIES DURING REGULAR EXERCISE? To prevent injuries, I avoid adhering to a fixed routine. As a triathlete, I maintain a diverse range of training routines. It’s not advisable to work the same muscle group every day. For instance, if I focus heavily on leg workouts during running, the recovery happens when I switch to swimming. While injuries are rare, they can occur. When they do, I stop the activity that caused the injury and engage in exercises that don’t cause discomfort.

17. HOW CAN WE IMPROVE SPORTS CULTURE IN MEXICO THROUGH PARENTAL EDUCATION? Parental education is about

setting an example, not just talking about it.

My children have witnessed my dedication to exercise, and they felt it even before they were born. I’ve never given up this passion; it’s ingrained in me. However, that doesn’t mean my children will follow the same path. They now have an example of living a ‘fit’ life, but they will ultimately make their own choices.

18. WHAT ARE YOUR UPCOMING SPORTING GOALS? My up-

coming sporting goals include completing a 100-kilometer challenge over three days in December, crossing the Sea of Cortez to reach the Pacific. In March 2024, I plan to run 80 kilometers in Moab. In the summer, I hope to participate in the Ultra Marathon World Championship in Switzerland.

During those days, 30 participants competed in classic cars from 1950 to 1979 and enjoyed the Mayan region. Unique Rally Clásico left from Chetumal to Chichén Itzá, the second day they drove from Chichén Itzá to Valladolid, the last route was from Valladolid to Mérida.

Julio Cuenca is one of the best restorers of classic cars in the world, he has a 50-year career in the world of motorsport and has participated in national and international events. “A 100-point car is a 100% disarmed car, everything is new in the car, it takes a process of approximately 2500 to 3000 hours. There’s an important complexity in getting parts, the labor of tinsmiths, mechanics…” explained Cuenca.

Sebastián Figueroa Gasque conceived the idea three years ago and recruited the best specialists to make it happen.

“I’m from Merida, Yucatán, and my dad is from Valladolid, Yucatán, which is between Merida and Cancun, so that’s where this idea of touring our state in classic cars comes from. We come from a family of mechanics, and we have always been passionate about the history of racing and the dedication that comes with owning one of these cars.”

Gastronomy played an important role in the event. Roberto Solís was the Chef’s host at gala dinner, where his creations can be tasted.

During the race, five chefs cooked typical dishes of the region and Mayan cuisine.

The world famous footballer from East London played football for ManchesterUnited for 11 years, leading them to be the most famous football team in the world at the time, while also playing in multiple world cup fixtures for England (including one where he got a red card for kicking Diego Simeone of Argentina.) Since his footballing days, he has built a brand in one of the world’s most famous families, after marrying an actual Spice Girl, VICTORIA BECKHAM, in 1999.

of bed in the morning, I can get you up and surfing! Will be a slower learning process for those with less physical strength, or limitations due to injury, stiffness, etc, but with a nice big stable board and easy waves, anyone can get up and riding with some quality instruction.

18. WHAT IS A “BARREL” IN SURFING TERMINOLOGY?

Very rarely. Took a while to get comfortable surfing daily areas like San Francisco where sharks are prevalent, but you learn to block it out, and mitigate risk by avoiding high-risk situations like surfing by rivermouths after rain, or alone at dawn and dusk where marine life is abundant.

A “Barrel” is the term used to describe when a surfer is able to ride a wave ‘inside’ the cylindrical part of the wave that is created when the wave is crashing. Not all waves ‘barrel’, but require specific conditions such that the breaking wave does not ‘spill’ gently as it turns to white-water, but rather has enough speed and power to ‘throw’ into a ‘barrel shaped’ wave, that allows the surfer to navigate through. It is the most technical and difficult feat in surfing, as you are riding closest to the most powerful part of the wave,and weaving through a tight tunnel.

16. WHICH BEACH IN AUSTRALIA IS SYNONYMOUS WITH SURFING? Bells Beach, Victoria. And Kirra on the

Gold Coast. Both are World Class waves that are protected Surfing Reserves for all surfers to enjoy. These beaches draw thousands of tourists a year to experience these amazing waves.

17. WHAT IS A “WIPEOUT” IN SURFING TERMS?

A Wipeout is the term given to when you fall when riding a wave. Most spectacular Wipeouts generally happen on ‘Take-Off’ when the surfer is attempting to get to his/her feet.

FRANCE 2023,WORLD IN UNION FRANCE HOSTS THE 10TH RUGBY WORLD CUP. THE TOURNAMENT IS OPEN IN SAINT-DENIS ON 8 SEPTEMBER, WHERE THE FRENCH BEAT THE NEW ZEALANDERS 27-13.

Two centuries after the invention of the sport, some 2.5 million tickets sold and millions of television viewers in 209 countries share moments of fraternity, passion, energy and, most importantly, fair play. The Rugby World Cup has been the showcase of art de vivre, in various territories and typical regions of France.

Malheureusement for the French team that failed to reach the semi-finals despite the close match with South Africa, who won by only one point and left a final score of 28 vs 29 points, as well as the disappointment of French faces around the world.

GAMES AROUND FRANCE. From 8th September to 28th October, 48 matches will be played in nine host cities. Let’s start with the beautiful Ville Lumière which welcomes at Stade de France, Saint-Denis the opening teams of the competition: France (Les Bleus) vs New Zealand (All Blacks) on Friday 8 September, Australia (Wallabies) and Georgia (The Lelos) on 9 September, South Africa (The Springboks) and Ireland on 23 September, Ireland vs Scotland on 7 October and some quarter-final matches are also played: Ireland v New Zealand on 14 October and Les Bleus vs The Springboks match on 15 October.

HISTORY BRIEF. The origin of this sport began in 1823, when playing football, William Webb-Ellis, an English student at Rugby College, made an “unusual” gesture by catching the ball with his hand and running with it. This led to the rules drawn up by the students at Rugby College in 1845, which specified that it was permitted to play the ball with the hands, from which the current rules were derived.

In 1886 the International Rugby Board, now called World Rugby, was founded and the first international match was played in 1871 between Scotland and England.

Scoring in the game is defined by the Try which is when the ball is grounded on or over the opponents’ goal line and is worth 5 points. The Penalty Kick is worth 3 points and is awarded in favor of a team after an infringement by the opponents, the team may kick at goal. The conversion is worth 2 points and can be achieved when the same team after scoring a try kicks the ball between the posts and over the crossbar. In 1987 the first Rugby World Cup was held in New Zealand and Australia during May and June. The countries competing were the seven members of World Rugby, with several other traditional rugby nations invited. The 7 traditional WR members proved too strong for the other teams, and the All Blacks dominated the entire tournament and lifted the cup after beating Les Bleus.

Since its creation, all editions have been held in countries with a strong rugby tradition.

England and France have been the only two countries to have hosted the Rugby World Cup twice at home and Japan, despite not having a great history in the sport, was chosen to host the World Cup in 2019, due to its progress in world rugby.

This is an inclusive sport and will also host the tenth Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2025 with England being considered as the host nation. The women’s cup was first played in Wales in 1991 and from 1998 World Rugby proclaimed the cup to be held every 4 years.

The current champions are the Black Ferns, who won the 2021 tournament at home in New Zealand.

1. COULD YOU TELL US HOW YOUR JOURNEY INTO THE WORLD OF SPORTS BEGAN, AND WHERE YOU OBTAINED YOUR PERSONAL TRAINER CERTIFICATION? My journey into the realm

of sports began when I moved to Los Angeles shortly after getting married. It was there that I discovered a side of the fitness world that I hadn’t previously encountered. Observing these incredibly fit personal trainers engaging in various exercises, running along the beach, and practicing yoga left a profound impression on me. I was particularly struck by their high level of preparation, especially since this was over a decade ago when such a concept was relatively unknown in Mexico.

Back then, personal trainers were more commonly associated with gym settings. This experience opened my eyes and inspired me to introduce the concept of personal training to our country. My journey started with a certification as a yoga instructor from YogaWorks Los Angeles, followed by a course in pilates at Lagree. My most recent certification was earned as a Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).

balanced life as a mother, wife, and athlete without losing my personal identity as a woman involves organization and support. Open and honest communication with my husband is a fundamental element. For example, sometimes my husband spends his mornings playing golf, and other times, it’s my turn to focus on my interests. Ensuring that I have dedicated time for self-care is a top priority. a lack of proper planning, which can leave individuals feeling lost. Unrealistic expectations can also be detrimental, as desiring rapid results often leads to demotivation. Starting with too much intensity can result in injuries.

Repeating the same routine can become monotonous. Failure to listen to one’s body and establish a consistent routine are additional stumbling blocks.

7. HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A HEALTHY DIET, AND WHAT DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS CAN YOU OFFER? For me, my body

is a sacred temple, and I appreciate knowing that what I consume nourishes me. However, I also believe in balance. I enjoy eating healthily but also take pleasure in savoring delicious meals (my husband is an excellent cook). It’s not just about sustenance; it’s about finding enjoyment in what I eat.

8. THE INCREASE IN INJURIES DUE TO A LACK OF KNOWLEDGE IS A GROWING CONCERN. WHY DO YOU THINK THERE’S A RISING FEAR AMONG FITNESS COACHES WHEN IT COMES TO THIS ISSUE DURING THEIR CLIENT TRAINING SESSIONS? This issue often

stems from the inadequate training of some coaches. In Mexico, a trend in fitness studios of various disciplines tends to hire individuals based on qualities unrelated to their preparation and knowledge of the human body.

9. WHAT TYPE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY DO YOU RECOMMEND, OR HOW CAN THEY PRIORITIZE THEIR PHYSICAL WELL-BEING WITHOUT ABANDONING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY? I understand

that a shortage of time can pose a significant challenge, but I believe it’s always possible to carve out moments in the day for your health.

We all have twenty minutes to spare, and the key is to prioritize your well-being.

10. WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO TRAINING, AND WHAT IS YOUR TRAINING PHILOSOPHY? My approach involves a

functional exercise program that encompasses various training methods, including HIIT (high-intensity interval training), plyometrics, isometrics, pilates, barre, yoga, strength training, and stretching. On occasion, we incorporate resistance bands, medicine balls, or dumbbells. However, most exercises are bodyweight-based, making them accessible from any location and at any time. Each session is thoughtfully designed with an integrated structure, and the workouts focus on the body as a whole to achieve desired results.

11. HOW OFTEN DO YOU RECOMMEND INDIVIDUALS ENGAGE IN EXERCISE? The recommended training frequen-

cy varies based on one’s goals, current level of fitness, and the availability of time. For individuals aiming to maintain their health, I’d suggest a minimum of three sessions per week.

12. WHAT’S YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON BARRE? I have a genui-

ne fondness for Barre. It’s a welcoming form of exercise that simultaneously challenges you to step out of your comfort zone. Additionally, it proves to be highly effective for toning and strengthening muscles.

have a personal app. However, I do recognize that the pandemic has brought about a positive shift, particularly in terms of the at-home exercise culture. Nevertheless, consumers should exercise caution, as there’s no one present to oversee their posture and movement.

14. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE CONTENT CREATED BY INEXPERIENCED INDIVIDUALS ON SOCIAL MEDIA WHO SHARE WORKOUT ROUTINES AND ADVICE ON ACHIEVING A FIT BODY QUICKLY? This is a nuanced matter. Every individual

is unique, and what works for one person may not be suitable for another. That’s why it’s critical to seek guidance from professionals.

15. BINGE EATING IS A TOPIC OF SIGNIFICANT CONCERN TO OUR READERS. A SUBSTANTIAL PERCENTAGE OF WOMEN ENGAGE IN EXTREMES, SUCH AS STARVING THEMSELVES OR BELIEVING THAT A GREAT PHYSIQUE IS A MATTER OF LUCK OR AFFLUENCE. WHAT IS YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON THIS? The increasing preoc-

cupation with body image and its relationship with eating habits is becoming more prevalent, with social media playing a role in this.

We’re frequently exposed to digitally altered bodies and surgically enhanced images that deviate from reality, setting unrealistic beauty standards. From my standpoint, a desirable physique doesn’t adhere to a specific shape and may vary from person to person. It’s crucial to remember that beauty and well-being manifest in diverse forms. In my view, physical and mental health take precedence over the pursuit of impractical beauty ideals.

16. WHY DO YOU THINK SO MANY PEOPLE STRUGGLE TO ATTAIN A HEALTHY BODY AND FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES, WITHOUT NEEDING TO REACH THE LEVEL OF A HIGH-PERFORMANCE ATHLETE? The challenge often lies in setting objecti-

ves that are unrealistic or unsustainable over the long term. Not everyone needs to aspire to high-performance athleticism to experience self-satisfaction. The key is to establish practical goals that align with one’s lifestyle.

17. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON PLASTIC SURGERIES?

Plastic surgeries are a serious matter as individuals can quickly develop an addiction to them, progressively transforming themselves into something they are not. From my perspective, there’s no substitute for natural beauty, and I believe that every person possesses unique and inherent beauty.
