FromExclusiontoAccountability:Race,Media,andthe DiversificationofBostonSportsNow
Bostonhascarriedacomplicatedandoftendamaging reputationregardingitshistorywithraceandsports.Fromthe early20thcenturythroughtheCivilRightsEraand,finally,the presentday,thecity’sathleticinstitutionsreflectedbroader systemsofracismthatshapedwhowasallowedvisibility, admiration,andopportunity.MythesisexamineshowBoston sportsgraduallydiversifiedovertime,focusingonhowroles playedbyprofessionalteams,sportsmedia,andpublicattitudes changedfromencouragingtochallengingracialinequality.Using historicalanalysis,andmediacriticismofMajorLeagueBaseball, theNationalBasketballAssociation,andBoston’smajor franchises,thisprojecttracestheshiftfromovertexclusionand mediasilencetowardintegration,accountabilityandinstitutional reform.MyresearchfoundthatracisminBostonsportswasnot maintainedindividuallythroughfanbehaviorbutthrough structuralbarriers,biasedreporting,andlongstandingnormalized exclusion.Whileintegrationpoliciesandcivilrightsreforms forcedchange,theculturalattitudesandpublicperceptiondidn’t follow.ThisreinforcedBoston’snationalracistreputationevenas thecity’ssocialconditionsimproved.Inrecentdecades,increased mediaobservations,athletevisibility,andleague-widediversity initiativeshavecontributedtomeasurableprogress,though tensionsremain.Bostonsportsdidnotsimplydiversifythrough time,butthroughdeliberatepressure,visibility,andaccountability, demonstratinghowevendeeplyrootedsystemsofexclusioncan evolvewhensilenceisreplacedwithunrelentingpursuitofchange.

Boston,Massachusetts,haslongheldacomplicated relationshipwithraceandsports.Historically,thecity’sathletic scenereflectedbroadersocialprejudices.Fromtheearly20th centurythroughtheCivilRightsEraandintomodernday,Boston sportshaveevolvedintermsofracialdiversity,gradually becominglessexclusionary.Myseniorthesistracesthe chronologicaldiversificationofBostonsports,analyzinghowthe city’steams,media,andpublicattitudesshiftedfromtransparent racialdiscriminationtoamoreinclusiveenvironmentforboththe fansandplayers.
BeforeBoston’sprofessionalsportsleaguesevenformed theidentitiesandcommunitiesinmodernday,thecitywasalready shapedbyracialthinkingthatdefinedwhowas‘fit’forpublic visibility,andadmiration.Inthelate19thandearly20thcenturies, therewaspseudoscientificmisinformationbuildingracial hierarchiesandwidespreadsegregation,shapingpublic assumptionsaboutintelligenceandphysicalabilityofNon-white athletes.Theseideaswerereinforcedthroughinstitutionssuchas workplaces,schools,andmediawhichnarrowedwhowasseenas deservingofequalopportunityandproperrecognition.These sociallynormalizedbeliefsinfluencedwhocouldrealistically becomeanathlete,coach,orcelebratedsportsfigure.“Viewing societyasahierarchyofraces,nativistsreliedonflawedscientific ideasthatsawnewimmigrantsasinferiorandunassimilable”1 . Thisracialhierarchymatteredinsportsbecauseathleticplaces werepublicstagesofstatusandpower.Ifcertainraceswere viewedas“inferior”,thenitwouldfollowwithexclusionfrom teamsleaguesandleadershiproles…whichwouldappearnatural

ratherthandiscriminatory.ThesamebarriersthatlimitedBlack accesstoemploymentandindustriesalsorestrictedaccessto professionalsports.PercyJulian'sfirsthandwritingcaptureshow opportunityinBostonwassymbolicratherthanessential.“student atHarvardin1925:"HereinBostonyouopen[totheNegro]the doortoaGrandOperaHouse,butinninecasesoutoften,youshut uponhimthedoortoafactorythatwouldaffordhimthemeansof aticket”.2 IntheworldofsportsthisdynamicmeantthatBlack Bostonianscouldwatchandadmireteamsbutwererarelyallowed toplaywithinthem.Athleticsuccessdidnotoverrideracial boundaries,itreinforcedsportsandyetanotherexclusionary practice.
Duringtheearlydecadesofthetwentiethcentury,Boston sportswerepredominantlyWhite,thisreflectsthewellestablished societalracistnormssegregatingthepossibilityofequal representationforBlackBostonians.Minoritiesfacedsignificant barrierstoparticipationandrecognition.Accordingtoonestudyof Bostonsportswritersinthe1950’s,“coverageoftenminimizedthe achievementsofBlackathletes,perpetuatingstereotypesand reinforcingaracialhierarchyinthepubliceye”.3 Normally steeringtowardswhiteathletesinefforttomaintaintheirpower, themediaconsciouslymadedecisionsthatreinforcedtheracistin Bostonsports.Evenbeforethecivilrightsmovementgained traction,thesportspressplayedapivotalroleinshaping perceptions…oftendiscouragingintegrationthroughselective reportingandbiasedcommentary.Thecity’steamsmeanwhile wereslowtoembracediversity.Blackathleteswerelargely excludedfrommajorprofessionalleagues,andthosewhobroke

barriersoftenfacedhostility.CooperSquarednotesthatthe media'sperception,“Bostonfanswereracist”4 andnotoriously resistanttointegrationwastrue.Whilethisexemplifiesthebroader racialclimateofnortherncities,Boston;ssportssceneearneda reputationforauniquelevelofexclusion,layingthegroundwork foralongstruggletowardsinclusivity.Whileracisminthestands washighlyvisible,racisminsportsmediaoperatedmoresubtly butjustaspowerfully.Sportswritersandbroadcastersplayeda centralroleinshapinghowfansunderstoodrace,athletes,and eventhecityitself.Lookingback,journalistsemphasizedhow Blackathletesweretreatedduringthecity’searlysportsera.“Black athleteshavebeenreveredanddiscriminatedagainstinequal measure”5.EvenwhenBlackathletictalentwasacknowledged,it stillexistedalongsidehostility,exclusion,andunequaltreatment. Thisrelationshipshapedfanbehavior,mediacoverage,and institutionalresistancelongbeforeformalintegration.Historically, Bostonsportsmediawasoverwhelminglywhite,whichevidently influencedwhichstoriesweretoldandhowtheywereframed.A BostonGlobediversitysurveyrevealedjusthowextremethis imbalancewas.Accordingtothereport,“There’sonlya1in10 chancethataBlackpersonistellingyouthosestories”(inGreater Bostonsportsmedia).6 Hiswordshighlighthowmedia 'homogeneity’reinforcednarrowviewpointsandallowed stereotypestopersistunchallenged.Whenthesamevoices dominatecoveragefordecades,bias,whetherintentionalornot, becomesnormalized.Similarly,theGlobesurveyfoundthatonly “10percent,or12ofthe126full-time”sportsmediaprofessionals

intheregionwereBlack.7 Thisimbalancemattersbecausethe mediadoesn’tjustreportevents,itinterpretsthem.Whenracism occurredinBostonsports,andstilldoes,theframingoften reinforcedtheideathatthecityitselfwasinherentlyracist,rather thanexaminingsystemicfactorsoracknowledgingchange.
Earlierdecadeswereevenmorerevealing;aretrospective analysisof1950sBostonsportswritingshowedthatjournalists normallyignoredracismaltogether,allowingthisdiscriminationto persistwithoutdriveforchange.AllowingteamsliketheRedSox toremainsegregatedwithoutmeaningfulcriticism.Silenceitself becomesaformofcomplicity.Byminimizingorignoringracial exclusion,sportswritershelpedmaintainthestatusquowhile presentingBostonsportsasmerit-basedandfair.Radio,andtalk showscontributedtotheproblem.Thespotlightreportpointedout thatsomeBostonsportsradiohosts“questionedaccountsof bigotryinthesportsworldandmockedeffortstoaddressracism”.
8 Thistypeofdiscoursediscouragedaccountabilityandmadeit harderforathletestospeakopenlyabouttheirexperiences. However,thefactthattheseissuesarenowopenlymeasured, criticized,anddebatedrepresentsprogress.Mediascrutinyitself becameaturningpoint,forcingBostonsportsjournalismto confrontitsownroleinsustainingracialinequality.
AfterWorldWar2,thecivilrightsmovementandwar causedsignificantchangeinBostonsports.Integrationinleagues likeMajorLeagueBaseballbecameareality,eventhoughthe processwasslowandfraughtwithresistance.Formerathletes recallthat“Asaplayerofcolor,whenyoutalkabout racism…manysay‘thereyougoagainbringingtheracecard in.'...itisaliveandwellandthewaytheychangeitisinthatwayof

havingthatconversation”.9 Thiserawascharacterizedbyatension betweenprogressivepoliciesonpaperandthelingeringprejudices ofthecity’sinstitutionsandcommunities.Sportsmediabeganto evolveduringthisperiod.ManyBostonsportswriters“tiptoed around”theissueofracismintheRedSoxorganization,rarely confrontingitdirectly.Onenotableexampleappearedinthe BostonGlobeonOctober3,1954,whenHaroldKaesewroteabout theall-whiteteams:“WeareperfectlywillingtoemployaNegro playerwhenwefindonewethinkcanhelpus”(Passanisi,Media Watch,2013).10 WhileKaesestoppedshortofopenlyattackingthe Sox,hisacknowledgementoftheteam’sconditionalwillingness highlightshowthemediawasbeginningtorecognizeracial exclusion,evenifitwasframedcautiously.Theseearlystepslaid thegroundworkformorehonestandinclusivereportinginlater decades.Athletesthemselvesbecamesymbolsofprogress.As BlackplayersjoinedteamsinBoston,theirvisibilitybeganto challengestereotypesandalterpublicopinions.Today,Boston’s teamsactivelycollaboratetofightracism,“Ifyouhearsomething reallyoffensiveorhatefulspeakup,saysomething.Standfor teams.Butdon'tstandforracism.Wecanchangethegame”.11 This evidentmarkofchangemarksthebeginningofgradualtransition: Bostonsportswerestillfarfromfreeofracism,butthestructures ofexclusionwerebeingquestioned.Andhonestly,somefans probablydidn’tevennoticethechangeuntilyearsafter.
Sincethe1980’s,Bostonsportshavediversifiedmoreand more…thoughthecity’sreputationhasn’talwayscaughtupwith

itsprogress.TheCeltics,inparticular,haveplayedacentralrolein thistransformation.Asonejournalistsaid,“Idon’tknowthat there’safranchisethathasopeneddoorsmoreforAfrican AmericansinthiscountrythantheCelticshave”.12 Goingasfaras refutingthemedia'snegativecommentsandcoachesconcerns, “TheBostonCelticsmadeNBAhistorywhentheyselectedChuck Cooperwiththe14thoverallpickinthesecondroundofthe1950 NBADraft.Otherownerstriedtoconvincethen-Celticsowner WalterA.BrownnottoselectCooper,butaccordingtoGeorge SullivanoftheNewYorkTimes,Brownrebuttedbysaying,"I don’tgiveadamnifhe’sstriped,plaid,orpolkadot!Bostontakes ChuckCooperofDuquesne!’”13 .
Beyondteamsandmedia,thegeneralpublicplaysamajor roleinhowracisminBostonsportsisunderstood.Fanbehavior, publicrelations,andnationalcommentaryallcontributetothe city’simage.AccordingtoTheGuardian,Boston'sreputationfills themoldthatwasmadebytheassumptionswhichwere media-made,butthepapernotesthatoftenitisclearasday, “Bostonhasaraceandsportsproblem.Butit’shardlyaloneamong ‘liberal’cities”.14 TheBostonGlobe’s“Image&Reality”project furthercomplicatesthisidea.Anotherglobe-commissionedsurvey foundthat“54percent”ofBlackrespondentsrankedBostonas unwelcoming.Thisalarmingstatisticshowsthatperceptionisnot justmedia-driven,itreflectslivedexperiences,inflictedbythecity. Atthesametime,thesamereportacknowledgeschange,stating

that“racismcertainlyisnotasloudandviolentasitoncewas”.15 ThiscontrastillustratesthetensionattheheartofBostonsports today:realprogressexists,buthistorycontinuestoshapehow everyincidentisinterpreted.Wellwhatlimitationswereinthe rulebookthatlimitedBlackathletesorjustsocialnorms?Both! “AfterJackieRobinsonstartedatfirstbasefortheBrooklyn DodgersonApril15,1947,endingasix-decadebanonBlack playersinMajorLeagueBaseball,opportunitiesslowlybeganto expandforathletesofcolor”16.Integrationwasbothapolicyshift andaculturalturningpoint,beginningtochipawayatthe exclusionary'gentlemen'sagreements’thatrestrictedthe potentialityofBlackathletes.Ontheotherhand,manyother leagueshadbeenpracticingawhite-onlyagreementthatlimited eventhechanceofBlackathletesregardlessoftheirskillleveland talent.“BothMajorLeagueBaseballandtheNationalFootball Leaguehadso-calledgentlemen’sagreements,unwrittenrules amongownerstonotpursueBlackplayers”17.Thisquote exemplifiesthatbeforeintegrationnormswerechanged,the absenceofformalwrittenexclusionwasn’tfreedomand equality…itwasahiddenyetblatantsystemofracialcontrol.That beingsaid,progresswasn’taccepted.Somefansviewedthese effortsasunnecessaryorperformative,arguingthatsportsshould remain“apolotical”,andthatMassachusettsisa“Whitespace”, andthatasanathlete,youshould“expectracism”.18 Thisbattle againsttheconformativenormshowsthatwhileinstitutionswere changing,culturalattitudeslaggedbehind.Thepresenceofofficial

RacisminBostonsportshasneverexistedinisolation, instead,ithasreflectedthebroaderracialclimateofthecityitself. FromthestandsatFenwayParktofrontofficesandlockerrooms, sportsbecamespaceswhereracialtensionplayedout.Boston’s reputationinparticulargrewharsherthanmanyothermajor cities…notnecessarilybecauseracistmomentsarose,butbecause theywereframedaspartofalonganddeeplywovenhistory.The BostonGlobe’sSpotlightinvestigationexplainsthedistinction clearly,whileracistincidentsoccuracrossthecountry,Bostonis treateddifferentlyinnationalcoverage.WhenAdamJonesofthe BaltimoreOrioleswassubjugatedtoracialslursatFenwayPark, theresponsewasimmediateandsweeping.Asthereportstates, “Bostonisdifferent.Butyouknewthat”.19 Thatlineexemplifies howquicklyincidentsinBostonbecameconfirmationofan alreadyestablishednarrativeratherthanisolatedevents.
Boston’shistoricallyracistpastdisruptsitsmodern reputation.BostonisdifferentfromcitieslikeDetroitorKansas City,notbecauseofracism’sfrequencyalone,buthowdeeply historyinfluencesperspective.TheGlobefoundthat“eightplayers inthemajorprofessionalsportstoldthemediatheyhadbeen targetsofracialslursfromBoston-areafans”,morethananother citystudied.20 Eventhoughthenumbersthemselveswererelatively small,thepatternreinforcedtheideathatracismwasuniquelytied toBoston’ssportsculture.Rootedinhistoricalmomentsboth insideandoutsidestadiums.TheRedSoxbeingthelastMajor LeagueBaseballteamtointegrateisfrequentlyreferencedasa symbolofinstitutionalresistancetochange.RedSoxCEO,Sam Kennedy,openlyacknowledgedthislegacywhenhesaid,“We haveaveryunfortunatehistoryattheRedSoxandinBostonwith

respecttoracerelations”.21 Statementslikethisshowthateven leadershipwithinBostonsportsorganizationsrecognizesthe lastingdamageofpastyears.
Comparedtothesilenceofthepast,thecurrentmedia environmentrepresentsrealmovement.Racismisnowatopicthat demandsexplanation,contextandresponse,notavoidance.And althoughcoveragesometimesfeelsrepetitiveanddefensive,it signalsthattheissuecannolongerbepushedaside.Aspreviously stated,thepublicattitudesarenowmirroringalongside institutionalandmediachanges,thoughnotwithouttension.Fans todayaremoreawareofBoston’sracialhistoryinsportsevenif theydisagreeabouthowmuchitshouldmatter.Boston’sarticles pointoutthatmanyfansfeelfrustratedbeingjudgedbythecity’s past,yetthatfrustrationitselfshowshowcentralracehasbecome totheconversation.Themediahasalsostartedtoplayarolein changingfanbehavior.Racistincidentsarenowrecorded,shared, andcriticizedinrealtime.Thistransparencycreatesconsequences thatdidn’texistdecadesago.Fanswhocrossthelineareoften identified,banned,orpubliclycondemned,whichsignalsabroader culturalshifttowardaccountability,evenifitdoesn'tstopevery incident.Overall,thisshiftingeneralinclusivityrepresentsa transitionalera.Bostonsportsmovedfromdenialto acknowledgement,fromsilencetostatements,andfrompassive tolerancetoactivemessaging.Thedirectionofchangeisclear.
TheNationalBasketballassociation,foundedin1946was quicklyupheldasthepinnacleofbasketballtalent…thebiggest, mostcompetitive,andentertainingleaguewasmadeupoutof ~98%whiteAmericans.ThesewhiteAmericansdescendedfrom thetraditionalIrishandItalianimmigration.Theathletesinthe leaguemirroredthefanbaseofthattimefortheNBA, strengtheningtheappealtotheLeague’stargetaudience.That beingsaid,theNBA’sracialunificationbegantochangeshortly

afteritsfounding.Inthe1947-8season,“WatMisaka”brokethe league’sracialbarrierasthefirstnon-whiteplayer,andthefirst AsianAmericantoappearinanNBAgame.Moresignificantly,in 1950,AfricanAmericanplayersenteredtheleagueforthefirst time.‘ChuckCooper’becamethefirstBlackplayereverdrafted. Notuntil1970’s,theracialbalanceoftheleaguehadshifted dramatically,withBlackplayersaccountingforapproximatelyhalf ofallNBAathletes.Thistrendkeptgoingstrong;bythe1990s whiterepresentationdeclinedsharplydroppingfromover25%to around20%.Onlyafewyearsago,whiteplayersmadeup approximately17.5%oftheleague,only10%ofthembeing Americanplayersspecifically.22 Bostonsportsexistwithinamuch broadergloballandscapethanatanypointinthepast.Teamsare nonlongerbuiltprimaryfromlocalorevennationaltalentpools; instead…atheltesarrivefromacrosscontinents.Thistrans-national allowsforamoreinvitationofdiversebackgrounds,languages, andculturalexpectations.Becauseofthis,inclusivityhasbecome lessaboutpublicimage,andmoreaboutfunctionality.Failingto conformtothisnewnormofcreatingrespectfulenvironments keepstheirout-datedracismduetofearofchange,andanignorant mindsetofarestrictedcommunityexemplifiesastrong community.Thatbeingsaid,itriskslosingtalentandfalling behindcompetitively,bothwithinthesport,aswellaspublic appeal.
Despitetheteam’spioneeringefforts,Bostonstillstruggles withaninternalpublicviewofracism.Creatingtensionbetween thecity’sundeniablesportingexcellenceanditscomplicatedracial history.Theroleofthemediainshapingpublicattitudesremains significant.Sportsradioandjournalismcanreinforcestereotypes orpromoteinclusivitydependingonapproach.Whilethereare conversationsdebatingifreactionstonormalizednegativemedia, WGBHsays,“Thingshavegottenbetter…butyourresponsetoit
iswhat’simportant.TheresponsewhenIplayedwasnothing. Accordingto‘TheGuardian’,“Whilenotperfect,Bostonhasbeen aplaceforBlackathletesfromallovertheworldtoshowcasetheir gifts…longbeforeandlongafterthebusingmandate”.24 Thecity’s transformationisnotuniform;incidentsofracialtensionstill occur,buttheyarenowoftenmetwithwidespreadaccusationand demandsforsystemicreform.Thesechangingnormsdemonstrate thatdiversificationisnotonlyaboutteamcomposition,butalso abouthowsocietyinterprets,engageswith,andultimatelyvalues sportsculture.
Civilrightslegislationandbroadersocietalmovements createdpressureonteamsandleaguestointegrate,forcing managementtoconfrontlongstandingdiscriminatorypractices. Mediaevolutionhasalsoplayedakeyrole;reportinggradually shiftedfrombiasedorexclusionarycoveragetomoreequitableand inclusivestorytelling…helpingreshapepublicperceptionand normalizediversityinsports.ThevisiblesuccessofBlackathletes furtherchallengedstereotypesandbuiltadmirationacrossracial lines,influencingfanbehaviorequallyovergenerations.Then, proactiveinitiativesbyteams,includingcommunityengagement, diversityprograms,andpubliccampaignsagainstracism,help institutionalizeinclusivityandaccountabilitywithinorganizations. Bostonfansareknownforintenseloyaltyandpassion,but thispassionhasoftencrossedintohostility…especiallytoward BlackAthletes.Inthisenvironment,athletesarenotonlyjudged onperformance,butarealsosubjectedtopersonalandaxial attacksthatgobeyondathleticcriticism.Theseeventshelped cementBoston’sreputationnationally.HeadlineslikeTime Magazine’s“WhyBoston’sSportsTeamsCan’tEscapetheCity’s Racism”influencedyoungergenerationsandthealreadyracially developedathleticBostonatmosphere,reinforcingthecityasa cautionaryexampleratherthananevolvingone.Evenasprogress occurredbehindthescenes,publicperceptionlagged behind…makingracisminsportsanindicatorofBoston’sbroader racialstruggles.
Asteamsevolved,sportswritinginBostonalsobeganto change.Themediacouldnolongerrelyonoutdatednarratives withoutfacingcriticismfromreadersandathletesalike.Writers beganaddressingracismtostayrelevant.Notjustaddressingit,but directly,notjustasisolatedincidents,butasabroaderhistorical context.Boston’s“Sportsstrugglewithperceptionbuiltonracist past”analysisnotedthatBostonSportscontinueto“strugglesfor progressalongwithtoday’sclimateofracialtensionthatsports can’tavoid”.25 Insteadofdenyingthecity'sreputation,modern sportsjournalismincreasinglyexamineshowthatreputation formedandwhyitpersists.Authorschangetonowframingracism asastructuralissueratherthanblamingindividualfans exclusively.Importantly,moderncoveragealsoincludesathlete

voices.Playersarequotedspeakingabouttheirexperiences, frustrations,andexpectationsforchange.Itcontrastssharplywith earlierdecadeswhenBlackathleteswereoftenspokenabout,not listenedto.Mediaoutletsnowrecognizethatcredibilityrequired re[ersetionandaccountability,evenifprofessisstilluneven.
Attheendoftheday,racisminBostonsportscannotbe reducedtoindividualfansorisolatedmoments.Itdeveloped throughinstitutionalresistance,mediasilence,andthepublic bystanding.Understandingthishistoryisessentialto understandinghow,andwhy,Bostonsportswouldeventually begintodiversify.
Bythelate20thcenturyandintotheearly2000s,Boston sportsbegantoexperienceanoticeableshiftawayfromovert racismexclusiontowardintentionalinclusivity.Thistransitionwas notsudden,norwasitperfect,butitmarkedaturningpointwhere teamscouldnolongersustaintheancientpracticethatwas normalized(ignoringracialissueswithoutpublicaccountability). Unlikeearliereraswheresilencewasthenorm,organizations startedtakingeffectivestances,acknowledgingpastmistakesand activelypromotingchange.
Oneoftheclearestexamplesofthisshiftcamein2017, whenallfourmajorBostonprofessionalteamslaunchedajoint anti-racialinitiative,AtFenwayPark,theRedSox,Bruins,Celtics, andPatriots,debutedthe“TaketheLead”campaign.Accordingto MajorLeagueBaseball’sofficialpressrelease,theinitiative encouragedfanstointervenewhentheywitnessedracism.The popularmessage,directlychallengingthepassivefanculturethat wasnormalized,nowplaysonscoreboards,video-boards,and PSA’sbeforeeveryprofessionalgame,“Ifyouseesomething,say something”.Whatmakesthisinitiativesignificantisnotjustits messagebutitsvisibility.FenwayPark,longseenasasymbolof Boston’sexclusionarypast,becameaplatformforinclusion.The campaign'ssignage,publicserviceannouncements,andplayer involvementmadeitclearthatracismwasnotsomethingthat
owners,players,andeverythinginbetweenwerewillingtotolerate quietly.KennedyemphasizesinBoston'sarticle,“Bostonsports strugglewithperceptionbuiltonracistpastthattheeffortwas meanttosay,everyoneshouldfeelcomfortableatFenwayPark. Nomatteryourrace,religion,politicalbeliefs,yoursexuality,you arewelcomedatFenway.”26,whichinsteadofreinforcingtheracist practice,reinforcesaninclusionaryspace.Teamleadershipalso becamemorepopularandvocal.Executivesacknowledgedthat reputationaldamagefromracismaffectednotjustpublicimagebut alsoplayerrecruitmentandfantrust.Thiswasuniquelyimportant asBostonteamsbecamemorediverseandincreasingly internationalandcompetitive.Playersofcolornowentered organizationsthatatleaststructurallywerepreparedtosupport them.Thatdoesn’tmeanracismdisappeared,butitdidmeanit wasconfrontedmoredirectlythanbefore…ratherthanblendingin withproblematicissuesthatwereoverlooked.
Referringbacktothefearoflosingskillwhilediversifying sports…the2024-2025NBAchampionshipwinnerswerethe OklahomaCityThunder(OKC).Arosterof17-18athletes,hada totaloffourwhiteplayers;AlexCaruso,centerChetHolmgren, andforwardJackWhite,withrookieBrandenCarlson.27 Onlytwo ofthosefourathleteshadanoticeableimpactfortheir championshipgames,Chet,andAlex,withonlyChetbeingintheir startingfiveline-up.
Sportswritinglooksverydifferentthanitdidinthepast, especiallywhenitcomestohowtheNBAiscovered.Insteadof focusingonrace,culture,orsocialtension,mostmodernsports articlesarecenteredonmoney,business,andgrowth.Thischange connectsdirectlytohowthefanbasehasevolvedovertime.While

AplayflyInsightnationalpollbeforethe2024-2024season foundthat“everydemographicinthecountrybelievestheNBAis trendingupward,withthecoveted35-44agegroupbelievingmost ofallintheleague’sgrowth”.29 Thismattersbecause,theolder whoweremorelikelytoviewsportsthroughracialorsocial lenses,areagingoutofthecoreaudience.Theadultswatching(as wellasteens),tendtocaremoreaboutentertainmentvalue,player movement,andbusinessdeals,thanrace.Asaresult,sportsmedia reflectsthoseinterests. Fanbasesworldwidethemselveshavealsobecomemorediverse. Asbrieflymentioned,althoughitwasslower,reportsshowthat; “theleaguehastheyoungestandmostdiversefanbaseofthefour majorU.S.sports”.30 Thedisconnectbetweenplayersandfansthat existedinearlierdecadeshasnarrowed.Withamorediverse,and youngeraudience…thereislesstensiontowriteabout.

Thisdoesn’tmeanracenolongermattersinsports,butitdoes showwhatmediaoutletsthinkwillattractclicksandattention.
AlthoughrecentmovementsliketheBlackLivesMatter movementhaveraisednationalcoverageandattentiontothefight forcivilrights,Boston’sproblemisstillshrinking,notgone,and definitelynoterased.Historyleavesmarksonthepastlikea markertryingtogeterased…sheddinglightonthepaststopsthe inkfromseepingintothefutureandfurthernegativelyimpacting civilrightsequality.Whileconversationsaboutracearemore common,whogetstoleadthoseconversationsislimited.This imbalancecanmakereportingfeelreactiveratherthan transformativeattimes,especiallyduringhigh-profileincidents.
Decadesago,Celticsgamesandplayerswereoften discussedinthecontextofracialtensionbetweenthecityandits Blackathletes.NowadayscoverageoftheCelticsfocusesheavily onchampionships,contractsandtitlewindows.PlayerslikeJayson Tatum,andJaylenBrownareinheadlinesmoreasassetsand superstarsthansymbolsofracialchange.Bostonisnotan exception,ratherkeyproofthatdespitehowdeeplyrootedsystems ofexclusioninAmericansportscanshiftthroughsustained pressure,mediaaccountability,andinstitutionalchange, exemplifyingthatothercitiesregardlessofnegativepast,canalso movefromsilencetoequality.InBostonspecifically,thisshows howfarsportswritinghasmovedawayfromsocialandracial discussionsandtowardsbusinessandperformanceeveninacity wherethoseissuesoncefeltimpossibletoignore.
