Introduction
By nature of the medium, sculpture affects space in seen and unseen ways. By creating physical impositions and subconscious influences that change the way we navigate a room, sculpture offers the viewer unique clues about how to engage with it. Through the use of recognizable art making tools, such as line, form, color, gesture, and scale, sculpture asks the viewer to move and share space. Exhibition artists Cathy Della Lucia and Lee Williams demystify the sometimes unapproachable nature of three-dimensional art by utilizing elements of humor, color, and personal storytelling, building a metaphorical bridge for the viewer.
Working in multi-faceted forms and a wide array of materials, Williams and Della Lucia explore idiosyncratic notions of sculpture and why it is generally unlike two-dimensional artwork. What’s the Difference?
Sculptural Ideas challenges the way we think about physical space and invites curiosity about the gap between looking and understanding when viewing this art form in the round.

Biographies
CATHY DELLA LUCIA is a sculptor and educator whose practice explores the balance between process and construction, examining modularity and the relationship between the body and objects, such as tools, toys, and weapons. Della Lucia received her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art, sculpture at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio and went on to complete her MFA in sculpture at Boston University. She has been featured in Sculpture Magazine and Boston Art Review, and is the recipient of several awards, including the Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship and the Davis Museum, Prilla Smith Brackett Award. In addition to awards, the artist has taken part in residencies at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT and The Blue House Gallery Residency in Dayton, OH. Della Lucia’s work has been exhibited internationally and nationally, including at Miseul Seye Gallery, Seoul, South Korea; Site, Brooklyn, NY; Abigail Ogilvy Gallery, Boston, MA and Los Angeles, CA; Abel Baker Contemporary, Portland, ME; Overlap Gallery, Newport, RI; and AB Cohen Art Gallery, Cincinnati, OH, among others. She currently lives, teaches, and works in Boston, MA.
LEE WILLIAMS is an artist and educator whose work is about his experiences on long walks while living in rural Shaftsbury, VT. Originally from a coal-mining town in South Wales, UK, Williams now resides in an 1820s farmhouse set on ten acres of a former 19th-century sheep farm, finding inspiration in the dichotomy of the limited space of the UK and the expansive landscape of Vermont. Williams received his Foundation Diploma from Cardiff School of Art, Wales, UK, his BFA from Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, UK, his MPhil at Goldsmith University, London, UK, and his Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of South Wales, Wales, UK. He has been awarded residencies in Italy, France, Scotland, the United States, and Ireland, as well as associated public art commissions in the UK and the USA; most notably with the Accademia di Belle Arti Lorenzo da Viterbo, in Tuscany, Italy; and the Southern Vermont Art Center in Bennington, Vermont. His work has been exhibited widely in Vermont including the Maurice Khan Gallery, the Brattleboro Museum and Art Gallery, the Kent Museum, the Bennington Museum, and South Vermont Art Center, among others, and has participated in exhibitions at the Cedarburg Museum of Art, Milwaukee, WI; Art Spot, Kyoto, Japan; Colony Projects, Port Talbot, Wales; Swansea Museum, Swansea, UK; and many more. He currently lives and works in Shaftsbury, VT.

GROUP AND SCHOOL VISITS
BCA gallery educators lead inquiry-driven group tours that encourage close looking, critical thinking, and thought-provoking conversation. We connect these conversations with hands-on art activities that explore exhibition themes, materials, and artistic processes. We welcome public, private, and homeschool students in grades pre-K to 12 and beyond.
PROGRAM FEE: $15 per student for tour + activity. Groups and schools are invited to apply for a partial or full scholarship.
