HIGHLIGHT NEW YEAR’S EVE, 2021 Friday, December 31, 2021 To ring in 2022, Highlight welcomes hundreds of Vermont-grown performers for three types of events: virtual (streaming online), in-person (in downtown Burlington), and hybrid (virtual

+ in-person components). Watch a live concert, warm up at a bonfire, dance with a big band, take your kids to the circus, transport yourself at the tropical oasis, interact with immersive digital art, and of course, catch the fireworks at the waterfront. UNBOUND

BRADLEY BORTHWICK OBJECTS OF EMPIRE

On display through February 5, 2022 First Floor Gallery, BCA Center Unbound features the work of three New England artists who explore contemporary approaches to abstraction as it relates to architecture, space, and materials. United by their use of geometric, shaped forms that push outside the boundaries of the ubiquitous rectangle, each artist considers the possibilities of abstraction with novel perspectives – unconstrained by prescribed expectations or rules. Featuring abstract painting, sculpture, and works on paper, Unbound includes the work of Rachel Gross, Rob Hitzig, and Kirsten Reynolds.

On display through February 5, 2022 Second Floor Gallery, BCA Center Bradley Borthwick’s sculptural installation, Objects of Empire, evolved from his research of the Dorset marble quarry of Vermont and the ancient Roman storehouses known as horrea, found throughout southern Italy.

For his first solo exhibition in New England, the artist creates hand-carved facsimiles of headstone and amphora, as well as beeswax models cast from their likeness. While seemingly incongruent and separated by time, location, and culture, these objects become poignant symbols of the ascension and demise of their respective realms. Calling to mind notions of sustainability and impermanence, Objects of Empire thoughtfully ponders the shared cycles of civilization.

SARAH TRAD WHAT STILL REMAINS

February 18-June 5, 2022 First Floor Gallery, BCA Center Eric Aho debuts a new series of paintings that feature captivating scenes of the natural world.

Inspired by the artist’s wanderings amidst the lush, forest landscape surrounding his home in Saxtons River, Vermont, Aho’s paintings convey a vastness and intimacy with the land.

Headwater features monumental and smaller scaled paintings that capture the artist’s sensory experience of the natural world—reconstructed by the artist through memory and invention.

Embracing romantic and modern traditions, Aho’s paintings of rivers, waterfalls, streams, and brooks reflect our relationship with the wilderness—as being a part of nature, yet also an intruder. In Headwater, Eric Aho invites us to consider what painting from life and representing the natural world means today.

February 18-June 5, 2022 Second Floor Gallery, BCA Center As a Lebanese-American artist living in Philadelphia, Sarah Trad explores complex themes of personal and cultural identity through film-based media and textiles. Her single and multi-channel videos appropriate and digitally manipulate scenes from popular movies, music videos, and television, drawing upon SWANA* cinema. For her first solo exhibit in New England, Trad will debut a collection of new singlechannel videos, and multi-channel moving image and textiles installations. In How I Met My Grandfather and Clench My Fists, Trad examines her relationship to her Lebanese paternal grandfather whose death became a familial catalyst for years of inherited trauma, mental illness, and shame in her Arab American family.

Trad also investigates personal identity and the absence of representation of Arab-Americans in popular media in her new video, Abir, Forever, and her multimedia wall installations. *South West Asian/ North African

THINK BIG - BUILD SMALL SCALE MODEL WORKSHOP WITH KIRSTEN REYNOLDS Saturday, January 29, 2022 1-5 pm $75, Fee includes materials Ages 18+ (Max 8 participants) Explore scale model-making with artist and educator Kirsten Reynolds whose abstract sculptural installation Spillover is featured in the BCA Center’s exhibition Unbound. Scale models are an invaluable tool for artists and designers to visualize ideas for three-

dimensional art. In this half-day workshop at the BCA Center, students learn to create their own scale model of an installation or sculpture using readily available materials such as paper, foam-core, and wood. The finished scale models will be photographed in a miniaturized indoor and outdoor environment to further explore how the installation or sculpture will transform the site and engage the audience.

Throughout the workshop, Reynolds shares examples of how she and other artists and designers use scale models in their creative process and project proposals. Students have the opportunity to explore Reynolds’ largescale installation in the first-floor gallery.

Groups can schedule a one or two-part program, with tours lasting approximately 45 minutes and full programs lasting 1.5 hours.

See.Think.Do! invites youth and adults to the BCA Center for an interactive arts experience.

Visits begin in the gallery with guided exploration and lively discussion around contemporary art featured in BCA’s exhibitions. Programs conclude in the studio classroom, where students create works of art inspired by exhibition themes, materials, and artistic processes.

The program fee is $5 per student. Groups are invited to apply for a partial or full scholarship.

Ages 12-18 Fridays, January 28-February 18, 5-7:30 pm Instructor: Ross Sheehan $150 per participant Designed for teens with a passion for art, this class encourages students to experiment with different drawing techniques, such as charcoal, live figure drawing, and perspective. Students develop a deeper understanding of professional 2-D artistic techniques and leave with drawings to add to their art portfolio. Individual projects are encouraged in this small class based on students’ interests.

WHEEL THROWING

MIXED LEVEL WHEEL THROWING

This class is an introduction to clay, pottery, and the ceramics studio. Students work primarily on the potter’s wheel, learning basic throwing and forming techniques, while creating functional pieces such as mugs, cups, and bowls. Students are also guided through the various finishing techniques using the studio’s house slips and glazes. No previous experience needed. Class price includes your first bag of clay and open studio access during the weeks of your class. All glazes and firings are also included. No previous experience needed.

Mixed Level Wheel supports students across a range of skill and experience levels who have thrown on the wheel. This eight-week course is rooted in fundamentals and encourages individual projects. Demonstrations and instruction will cover centering, throwing, trimming, and glazing, as well as forms and techniques determined by students. Discover a variety of techniques for transferring and printing images using hand-drawn, photographic, or borrowed imagery. Students learn how to apply photo emulsion, how to use an exposure unit, and how to print on a variety of surfaces. Class price includes the use of studio equipment, emulsion, transparencies, and ink as well as open studio access during the weeks of your class. Students can bring their screens or rent one through the studio. No experience necessary.

PRINTMAKING

OPTION 1: Thursdays, January 27-March 3, 6-8:30 pm OPTION 2: Wednesdays, April 13-May 25 (no class 4/20), 9:30 am-12 pm Instructor: Susan Smereka $300 This six-week introductory class shows you a whole range of printing techniques that can be used on their own or in combination to create unique artwork. Through demonstrations and hands-on learning, students are introduced to the studio’s equipment and materials and learn techniques such as block printing with linoleum, collagraph (a low-relief intaglio technique), and monoprint. Students are also encouraged to explore these techniques and have fun experimenting. Class price includes basic supplies as well as open studio access during the weeks of your class. No previous experience needed.

SCREEN PRINTING WORKSHOP Saturday, February 5, 10 am-3 pm Instructor: Kara Ware $90

This one-day workshop is for the person who wants to learn some creative screen printing techniques that do not involve the use of expensive studio equipment or digital imaging.

Students will learn how to stretch their own screens and create stencils with the use of drawing fluid and screen filler. Easy and costeffective tips and tricks will be shared for students who are looking to print at home. No experience necessary. All basic supplies are included. Please bring a bottle of water and a bag lunch.

DIY VALENTINES

Monday, February 7, 6-9 pm Instructor: Kara Ware $40 Come create one-of-a-kind Valentine’s Day cards in our print studio! Learn some fun and easy printmaking methods like monoprinting, foam printing, and cut rubber stamps to create valentines that come from the heart.

WOODCUT

Wednesdays, April 6-May 18 (no class 4/20), 6-8:30 pm Instructor: Ashley Stagner $270 Discover the unique process of woodblock printing with local artist Ashley Stagner.

Students focus on fundamental relief printing techniques and will be able to transform their designs into unique prints. The class will then progress to more sophisticated processes including multi-color printing and two-threecolor reduction block printing. Class cost includes all basic materials.

Prerequisite: Basic fine metal jewelry experience required. Take your fine metal jewelry skills to the next level. In this class, students review basic techniques (soldering, cold connections, sawing, etc) and expand on those skills, focusing on craftsmanship and finishing. Wednesdays, February 2 -March 9, 6-8:30 pm Instructor: Linda Jones $300 Learn how to paint with non-toxic, watersoluble oils. With an emphasis on studio work, this class begins with fun exercises. Using direct observational skills, students work on still lifes, reference photographs, and explore the landscape. Discover a variety of painting techniques and learn how to apply composition, linear aspects, form and color theory to your work. This supportive class balances studio time with gentle group discussion and critique.

Explore the many exciting possibilities of abstract painting through a variety of fun demonstrations and exercises designed to help you open up and work intuitively. Experiment with the paint of your choice (water-soluble oils, acrylics, or watercolor) and a variety of other mixed media. Learn from fellow students and discuss techniques and ideas in a supportive setting. While prompts will be given for you to respond to, please bring ideas and reference materials for inspiration. Take your drawing to the next level by adding vivid color with pencils! Join artist Ashley Stagner for a one-day workshop that will introduce you this accessible way to add a rainbow of colors and textures to your artwork.

The class starts with an overview of camera controls and functions, including aperture, shutter speed, ISO ratings, shooting in RAW, lens choices, metering techniques, and more. Organizing and editing files in Adobe Lightroom will also be covered, and students will leave with a selection of high-quality prints made on our archival Epson printer. This class also includes assignments and supportive critique sessions to discuss the composition, content, and concepts explored in your photographs. Students should bring a DSLR or digital Mirrorless Rangefinder camera and a Mac-compatible portable hard drive or flash drive. Open studio use is also included during the weeks of this class. ILLUSTRATOR

Thursdays, March 10-April 14, 6-8:30 pm Instructor: James Beihl $300 In this class, students learn about and develop an appreciation for using Adobe Illustrator as an effective picture-making and visual communication tool. Students create beautiful, dynamic, clean images while expanding their understanding of art as it exists in the digital space. Whether you are a graphic design enthusiast, t-shirt designer, character artist, or casual hobbyist, this class will show you how Illustrator can work for you and how it works alongside other programs. Class price includes access to open studio hours during the weeks of class. No experience necessary.

Explore the traditional, analog black and white darkroom. Students learn how to properly expose black and white film, process film into negatives, and make silver gelatin prints. All 35mm film, paper, and darkroom supplies included, as well as access to darkroom open studio during the weeks of your class. Bring your manual 35mm or medium format film camera and an exposed roll of black and white film to the first class.

Spend a day in our digital lab exploring and experimenting with the artistic side of Adobe Photoshop to create a graphic-styled illustration. After reviewing the basics of the program, students learn how to render and add form to a flat drawing using digital tools in Photoshop. This workshop is meant for beginner digital artists to develop or enhance their creative skills. All basic supplies and equipment are provided. Please bring a bag lunch.

ARTIST PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECTS Wednesdays, March 16-April 20, 6-8:30 pm Instructor: Mark LaRosa $300

Prerequisite: Previous BCA Digital Photo class or proficiency using manual exposure controls on a digital camera. Do you shoot digital images and have a photography project idea that you want to explore? This six-week class will focus on expanding, editing, and refining your digital photographs to create the portfolio of work you envision. Organizing and editing techniques in Adobe Lightroom, printing on our Epson inkjet printer, and more are covered. This class is designed to address individual student interests while exploring ideas in contemporary photography. Students will also dig into the technical, aesthetic, and conceptual aspects of their work through supportive critique sessions.

Open studio use is included during the weeks of this class. Bring a selection of digital files on a Mac-compatible external flash or hard drive to the first class.

Demystify Adobe Photoshop and create the digital images you envision. This class starts with the basics of the Photoshop toolbox and covers exposure and color corrections, working with layers and masks to edit selectively, removing and adding content within images, appropriately sizing files for print or the web, and printing on BCA’s Epson inkjet printer. Bring a selection of digital image files or scanned negative files on a Mac-compatible flash or hard drive to the first class.

PHOTOGRAPHING ARTWORK Ages 18 & up (Limit: 1 student)

Your work will be professionally lit and photographed and you will receive one highres TIFF and one JPEG of each image. During the photo session, you will be responsible for moving your artwork around and for unpacking and packing up your artwork. BCA staff will handle the lighting and camera work during the shoot and will apply basic color correction, density, and contrast adjustments to each image in BCA’s Digital Lab. You may bring up to 10 unframed pieces no larger than 40” x 60”.

BCA will provide a digital camera during the session and a flash drive with your images for you to keep.

HOME STUDIO ADULT CLASSES VIA ZOOM | AGES 18 & UP

Bring BCA Studios home with you! BCA’s Home Studio classes are designed to give you a creative push to make art at home. With the support of our knowledgeable teaching artists, create great things while staying connected to the BCA community. Each class includes convenient art supply kits to provide everything you need to get started, customized instructions via Zoom, and personalized support with your projects. Our teaching artists will have access to BCA Studio equipment and can do what you can’t at home, such as prep screens, print photos, fire clay pieces, and more.

DETAILS Kits will need to be picked up by students at our studios. Students need to have access to a computer, smartphone, or tablet with the Zoom app downloaded, as well as a reliable internet connection. Registered students will receive an email from kwilliams@burlingtoncityarts.org one week before the class (separate from the class registration email) with information on picking up their art supply kit and with Zoom meeting information. If you do not see this email one week before class, please check your email spam or call (802) 865-7157. Class fee refunds will only be given if the request is made at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the class. An administration fee of 15% of the class price is non-refundable.

HOME STUDIO: PAINTING

HOME STUDIO: STILL LIFE PAINTING

Learn the basics of acrylic painting, an easy-touse paint for beginners. Over Zoom, Kara will lead this small class through guided painting exercises to get you painting at home. Students will learn basics like composition, color use, brush techniques, and more to make their paintings come to life, all while working in a supportive, virtual, environment. Class includes eight hours of instruction and all the materials you will need in a kit.

Prerequisite: Drawing and oil painting experience is recommended. Create dynamic compositions with vibrant color using contemporary still-life as your subject. Find beauty and personal meaning in common household forms. Artist and master teacher Gail Salzman leads a live Zoom class with demos, examples, tips, and feedback. Using water-soluble oils (no fumes, clean-up with water) you’ll create several small paintings on primed panels. Expect to spend a few hours on painting between class sessions. Class includes 18 hours of instruction and all the materials you will need in a kit, including panels, paints, and brushes. Supplies in your kit are yours to keep.

NEW STUDIO MEMBERSHIP The BCA Studios at 405 Pine Street offer seasonal studio membership for adults (18+) with basic experience who would like to work independently in our Drawing/Painting, Print, Clay, or Jewelry Studios, as well as in the Darkroom/ Digital Photography Lab. Each studio offers approximately 20-30 hours of open studio time per week. Trained studio assistants are on-hand during all open studio hours for guidance and support. On-site storage for supplies is included.

The JUDY KELLY DRAWING / PAINTING STUDIO + PRINTMAKING STUDIO features standing easels, adjustable lighting, a utility sink, a homasote critique wall, and drying racks.

Studio members are allowed the use of the community tools and shared storage space.

Our Drawing/Painting Studio is equipped for solvent-free, water-based painting, and drawing materials. The Printmaking Studio offers a 30"x48" Takach etching press, a 38"x32" vacuum-sealed exposure unit, blowout sink, utility sink, large work tables, and cleaning materials. Our Print Studio is equipped for silkscreen, relief printmaking, and monotype.

Studio members are allowed the use of the community tools and shared storage space.

The DARKROOM + DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY LABS offer a traditional black and white darkroom for film and print processing using low-toxicity Eco-Pro chemicals. There is space provided for experimenting with alternative historic processes, mat cutting, and zine making. The digital lab offers color-calibrated iMac workstations with Adobe Creative Cloud software, Epson V700/V800 film scanners, and three large-format Epson printers with archival printing capability up to 44 inches. Additional per-sheet fees apply for digital paper and ink.

The LAURIE PETERS JEWELRY STUDIO provides many tools and equipment for use including a polishing wheel, rolling mill, drill press, flex shafts, soldering stations, a PMC kiln, an extensive range of forming stakes and hammers, and many small hand tools.

The TAMARA EDDY CLAY STUDIO is a fully equipped, educationally-focused ceramics studio with 14 pottery wheels, three kilns, a slab roller, extruder, and a wide variety of hand tools for wheel throwing, hand building, and sculpting. Studio members get a personal shelf space to store their clay and works-in-progress.

SCHOLARSHIPS (PARTIAL & FULL) The BCA Studios offer many class/camp options year-round for any skill level.

Full or partial scholarships are available to anyone regardless of ability to pay.

Please fill out a scholarship form online at burlingtoncityarts.org/scholarship or call 802-865-7166 to request a paper application. Once approved, your class/ camp will be confirmed by the education director.

REFUNDS Refunds can only be given if the request is made at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the class/camp. A cancellation fee of 15% of the class price is nonrefundable.
