VOLUNTEER WITH WEST SUSSEX MINIBUS

Please mention VILLAGES IN FOCUS when responding to VillagesadvertsinFocus 5

Each Division has a dedicated team of volunteers to support the running of its services. There are many roles to choose from, depending on skills and the time individuals wish to commit. It could be a few hours a month or day a week; there is complete flexibility to fit with volunteers existing responsibilities.

As a holder of a D1 licence and with previous driving experience, a Minibus Driver for the organisation may be the perfect fit. Pick members up for their scheduled trip and return them safely back home.

West Sussex Minibus is an all-volunteer organisation that supports the whole community. For individuals, there are practical shopping trips and social days out. As a Community Group, you can join the Association as an Affiliate Member, which gives you access to their fleet of minibuses to support your activities.

Alternatively, if you enjoy meeting and helping people, the role of Minibus Escort could be to your liking. Assist passengers throughout their trip, ensuring they are comfortable and safe.

You will make a difference, so volunteer for your community today by calling 0300 772 7735.

The Association has a long history of supporting the local community. They offer individuals the chance to stay active and assist those who live away from public transport links to remain independent. The service is door to door, picking members up and dropping them back home every trip.

Based in Flansham, Baronmead has been supplying wheelchair access solutions to customers worldwide since 1982. Baronmead was founded by Alan White and his wife Pam supplying and designing powered stairclimbers for heavy equipment such as safes. This led to Alan developing the Stairmatic stairclimber as an accessibility solution for people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to manage steps.

BARONMEAD CELEBRATES 40 YEARS

The team now includes servicing technicians and demonstrators, as well as the management team which is headed by Graham, Alan’s son. Graham White has been working at Baronmead since 1993 and took over as Managing Director in 2003.

• Can a stairlift be fitted to ANY stairs? Most stairs can have a stairlift fitted. This includes curved stairs and outside steps in your garden. We supply stairlifts for narrow stairs too, with some models needing just 26” to ensure the customer can swivel comfortably.

• How quickly can a stairlift be installed? Baronmead can complete your stairlift installation within just a few days of you giving us the green light. A next-day installation is even available if it’s really urgent, including complex, curved stairlifts. It only takes a few hours to install, by one of our fully-trained, friendly technicians.

Stairlift Q & A

The first Stairmatic was sold to a care home in Yapton and since then the business has expanded, moving from its original base in Elmer Road, Middleton to their beautiful current HQ in Hoe Lane, Flansham. Since those early days Baronmead has extended its product range and is now an exclusive agent for a wide range of stairclimbers and stairlifts.

• Which is the best stairlift for my property? We offer a free on-site assessment by our fully-trained surveyors who can assess your staircase and recommend the best lift for you.

Please mention VILLAGES IN FOCUS when responding to VillagesadvertsinFocus 7

• Is the stairlift attached to the wall or stairs? Our stairlifts are attached to the tread of the stairs and not the wall.

OF STAIRLIFTS AND STAIRCLIMBERS

The original Stairmatic product has been exported to all corners of the world and now, celebrating its 40th birthday, Baronmead is still as passionate about providing access solutions as it was back in 1982. Baronmead are a leading supplier of stairlifts and would be delighted to help readers choose the right product to stay safe and maintain independence at home.

As well as supplying many local customers, you’ll find Baronmead equipment being used in an array of settings including National Trust buildings, schools, prisons, airports and stately homes.

• Do stairlifts need a power supply? Our stairlifts are battery powered but require a power outlet at the top or bottom of the stairs to keep it charged. For a no-obligation quote or to ask us any questions call 01243 586692.

• How much is a stairlift? Each stairlift is tailor-made to fit our customers’ needs but our surveyors can provide a free, no-obligation quote to help you decide if it’s right for you. Stairlifts are VAT exempt if the applicant is disabled or suffers from a chronic illness, saving 20% from the base price.

And Blake says all of the new faces buy into his method of playing the game – on the front foot. He added: “This club has a history of playing the game in the right way – expansive football that is intended to be effective but entertaining at the same time. We want to play very much on the front foot and we believe we have the players to do this and so far, our pre-season games have demonstrated that we are on the right

“Ofpath.course, there is a long season ahead but we are determined to stick to our principles and maintain the ethos of taking the game to the opposition, pressing high and trying to determine the outcome of the game by our actions. The challenge in this league is having the bravery to play that way week in, week out because you are undoubtedly going to come up against some strong teams that will do their best to spoil the way you play. Our job is to stay calm, play the only way we know how and try to take advantage of the chances we create to get our rewards.”

For more info visit https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/bognorregistownfc or see the club’s social media feeds.

The Nyewood Lane outfit kick-off the season on 13 August at home to Hornchurch (3pm kickoff) and Blake has set his sights on being in play-off contention for potential promotion come the end of the season. The Rocks finished ninth, the last time of asking, in a season that saw him take over managerial duties from the legendary Jack Pearce – who has been with the club for 52 years and is still heavily involved behind the scenes – as last term concluded.

The great thing for the club is that the fans buy in to the process and to prove this you only have to see that attendances are up and new supporters are being attracted all the time. The Nye Camp, as the ground is affectionately known, offers a friendly welcome with superb facilities, new 375-seated grandstand and a fantastic clubhouse. Do come along and cheer on the Rocks!

Blake has been busy recruiting new players and chief amongst them is powerful striker Nick Dembele, who has joined from Gosport Borough. Joining the goal-getter through the door are highly regarded operatives such as Tom Bragg, on loan from Eastleigh, Sam De St Croix from Met Police, Worthing attacker Tom Chalaye, winger Isaac Olaniyan from the AFC Wimbledon youth ranks and Joe Rabbetts, on loan from Dorking Wanderers.

Bognor Regis Town manager Robbie Blake refuses to compromise the club’s on-pitch ethos as the Rocks head into the new Isthmian premier division campaign – and supporters are delighted.

Top: Nick Dembele. Below: Harvey Whyte, club skipper in action in 1-1 draw v Pompey XI pre-season friendly.

This then is the former Premier League star’s first full season at the helm and, along with assistant manager Jamie Howell, he believes his squad is well equipped to make a push for a lofty spot at the business end of the action next May.

Try and draw the longest straight line entirely across land between two UK points – without a sea or estuary crossing. There’s only one possibility – and it’s not between Land’s End and John o’Groats. It’s between Bognor and Cape Wrath in Scotland, all 569 miles of it. This mildly interesting bit of trivia was figured out by American-born writer Bill Bryson. He set himself the challenge to explore Britain from south to north, drawing his imaginary line – what he called the Bryson Line – in his travelogue The Road to Little Dribbling (2015). Bognor was first and foremost in his travel plans. Realising that sticking strictly to his ruler line meant inconveniently trespassing through houses and gardens, tramping across trackless fields and fording rivers, Bryson actually meanders widely across the UK, his trip just firmly anchored by the line’s two extreme north-south points: starting here at Bognor and finishing at the lonely promontory of Cape Wrath in northern Scotland. But by contrast, sticking as near as possible to his arrow-straight line, the Bryson Line has already inspired some long-distance charity walks over the last few years, putting the town firmly on the nations’ long-distance walks’ map.

Bryson is ambivalent about Bognor. Although it’s ‘seen better days’, it ‘isn’t such a bad place’ after all with its beach, promenade, its ‘compact and tidy’ town centre and its ‘sylvan retreat’, Hotham Park. Walking along the promenade towards Felpham, he notes its ‘smart modern homes’ before embarking on the 700 Coastliner to Brighton which disappoints as it hardly touches the coast, going through an ‘endless clutter of suburbia’. Pushing further eastwards towards the plunging chalk cliffs east of Seaford, this is coastal Sussex at its best, encapsulated in the book’s cover with its iconic Jolly Fisherman of Skegness skipping along the clifftops of Cuckmere Haven against the brilliant backdrop of the famous Seven Sisters.

BOGNOR’SFocus BRYSON LINE

BY KIM LESLIE

Either way, use a compass to roughly find 28 E, then wiggle the dish gently up and down and side to side while looking at the TV screen, or getting someone else to look and shout. A meter has a simple dial pointer and probably also whistles as the signal gets stronger. Be warned that dish pointing needs to be much more accurate than for a UHF Freeview aerial. Be careful not to kink the cable because even when straightened again it will probably not work. Note that tree leaves will block satellite signals.

For short spells recently, TV interference in parts of Sussex was so bad that even some supposedly French-proofed (vertically polarised) Freeview signals from the Isle of Wight were swamped. Sky News on channel 233 mysteriously vanished. So now is the time to look at the other Frenchproofing option – Freesat satellite reception.

TV WORK BY BARRY FOX

An existing Sky satellite dish will work with a Freesat TV or STB. A Sky satellite receiver will usually get a lot of free TV channels, even when the Sky subscription has expired. Or you can install a new Sky/ Freesat satellite dish. The dish does not need to be high on the roof. It can be near ground level, bolted to a wall or on a pole in the garden, as long as it has a clear line of sight on the invisible satellite high in the sky at 28 degrees

Some TVs such as Philips sets sold across Europe, where there is no Freesat, may have a satellite aerial socket even though they are not officially Freesat sets. Instead of neatly sorting only the UK Freesat channels they randomly grab any programmes coming off the satellite. You have to do the sorting. Only enthusiastic DIYers will want to bother with the hassle this brings.

Some modern TV sets (eg. from LG) come ready-equipped to receive Freesat. They have an F-connector for a satellite dish as well as a standard coax TV aerial socket. Other TVs can easily be connected to a Freesat set-top-box (STB) or recorder, preferably by modern HDMI cable or if necessary old-style Scart.

It is possible is to forget about aerials altogether and watch TV from the Internet. But this requires a reliable and fast broadband connection with fixed charge per month for unlimited data. In general, broadcast is best for bog-standard TV. Be wary of TV sets that can only work with broadband. I nearly bought one by mistake!

built-in option to display the satellite signal strength, and so make it easier to adjust dish position”

HOW TO MAKE SATELLITE

Mosteast.people will opt for paying an aerial fitter to fix a dish. But competent DIY-ers can do it themselves (as long as it is safe and low). Caravaners and canal boat owners regularly do it. DIY dish kits start at around £50. The kit may include a simple signal strength meter to help find the invisible ‘bird’. But a satellite STB is able to display the signal strength on your TV screen, as bars. Go to the STB’s settings options.

Ts + Cs Valid for SEPTEMBER

Yellow wagtails nest on the ground in lowland open, wet grassland, meadows and arable farmland, mainly in central, eastern and some parts of northern England. But their numbers have declined dramatically – the breeding population fell by an estimated 75 per cent between 1970 and 2009 – and so seeing them is becoming harder and harder. Until they migrate, that is, and we get the chance to see them in all their golden glory. The RSPB has been helping yellow wagtails by researching the reasons for their decline and providing advice to farmers on what agricultural practices can best increase the birds’ breeding success in their lowland farmland habitats. Hopefully, this means yellow wagtails will become easier to see in the future. But, until then, watch the feet of the cattle in neighbouring fields this month. You might just catch sight of these beautiful little birds in shimmering flocks, dancing, rising and falling, searching for flies and other insects, or flitting over your heads as they fly out across the marsh.

The gorgeous yellow wagtail can often be spotted in flocks near the coast during the month – watch out for the small, longtailed birds flying up and down around the feet of feeding cattle.

WAGS BYOTHERANDCELEBRITIESROBYARHAM

With the Autumn fast approaching, we can expect to encounter the onset of “mists”, “mellow fruitfulness” and, I’m sure, many other seasonal clichés. At the same time, we say goodbye for another year to many of our summer visitors, who will be heading South in increasing numbers throughout the month. It might seem sad to see the songbirds that have serenaded us since the spring leave, and there’s always a poignancy to watching chattering sand martins, house martins and swallows pass overhead and fly out to sea to begin their long journeys. But the season brings new spectacles to enjoy at RSPB Pagham Harbour & Medmerry reserves, too, as many other birds drop in on migration, making the most of the food and shelter offered by these special places. Ospreys often visit – hovering over the water to hunt for fish – and rare birds, such as the weird and wonderful wryneck, might stay for a few days.

(rspb-images.com)AndrewBen

The osprey is a spectacular visitor to RSPB Pagham Harbour & Medmerry in September. Look for these large birds of prey hovering above the water and diving for fish.

(rspb-images.com)AndrewBen

There’s one spectacle I especially look forward to each autumn – the arrival of flocks of yellow wagtails, or ‘wags’ as they’re affectionately known. These beautiful little birds – mostly yellow and green, with long, flicking tails – visit nearby fields to feed up on insects before they, too, migrate to sub-Saharan Africa.

Join us on one or our guided walks this autumn to witness the wonders of migration. Find out more by visiting our website https://events.rspb.org.uk/paghamharbour or call 01243 641508. During the 1960’s allotments began to go out of fashion and continued to decline in popularity. As a society we were more affluent; more likely to buy what produce we needed from the local supermarket, and vegetable gardening just wasn’t considered sexy!

• Environmental. Recycling organic waste into compost, reducing food miles and increasing biodiversity by creating a wildlife-friendly habitat.

GARDENFocus VIEW

And the statistics in the news are scary. The number of food banks is growing exponentially as families struggle to put even the most basic provisions on the table. There are concerns about additives and pesticides on shop-bought fruit and veg, yet the cost of organic food puts it out of the reach of the most consumers.

Allotments don’t just benefit the humans who tend them. Each plot is a complex web of plants, micro-organisms, fungi, insects, and animals supporting pollination and offering a refuge for wildlife. To celebrate all the lovely bugs and beasties on Britain’s allotments, this year’s National Allotments Week encouraged gardeners to take part in a mini-beast monitoring survey. Bugs are really important to the healthy functioning of an allotment. They pollinate fruit and veg, control pests, and improve the soil. They are nature’s vital helpers.

During World War II and immediately afterwards, almost everyone with a garden grew fruit and vegetables. Food was rationed so people supplemented their diet with produce they’d grown in their own back garden, or down on their allotment.

• Social. It’s a brilliant way to meet friendly, like-minded people of all ages.

But with food prices soaring and less produce available on the supermarket shelves, added to an increased interest in plant-based diets and locally sourced food, allotments are enjoying a popularity surge.

• Diet. You can harvest fresh, organic, fruit and veg.

BY RACHEL LEVERTON

• Health. Great for aerobic exercise and therapeutic calm.

Is it any wonder that so many of us are taking matters into our own hands, deciding to emulate our grandparents and grow our own food? But growing food requires space, and modern housing often means tiny gardens. This is where allotments come into their own.

To acquire an allotment, simply approach your council. Price and availability varies around the country and in some areas there are waiting lists. But councils across the country are taking allotments and community gardens much more seriously now, and many are actively seeking to provide new sites. If an available plot is too large for your personal needs you may be able to rent half or find a like-minded friend to share it with. Enquire today and you and your family could soon, quite literally, be reaping the benefits!

• Economic. You’ll save loads of money growing your own.

I fell in love with Stand Up Paddleboarding (or SUP) last summer when the local marina offered SUP lessons. Before the end of the first lesson, I was hooked. SUP involves standing on a board while using a paddle to manoeuvre your way through the water. It’s a super-fun way to explore local waterways and get some fresh air and exercise.

• SUP Leash - so your board can’t float away if you fall in!

Paddleeasy.boards

Hard SUPs are made of an EPS foam core wrapped in materials like epoxy, fibreglass, wood, carbon fibre, or plastic. They tend to be slightly faster than inflatable SUPs, so perform better for SUP surfing. But they are harder to store and transport because they’re so big.

SUP is not difficult. We learned the basics in a day. There are more challenging forms of SUP, like SUP surfing and long-distance SUP touring, but recreational paddleboarding is pretty

It’s possible to teach yourself the basics but it’s more fun to take a class with other beginners. There will almost certainly be one near you this summer. So, join the craze and get paddling and don’t forget the sunscreen!

Inflatable paddle boards (or iSUPs) can be stored in a small space and easily transported then inflated when you’re ready to use them. Inflateable SUPs also float higher in the water, which is ideal for activities like SUP yoga (a real thing), and they are very durable.

come in a range of different shapes, lengths, widths, and sizes. The most common paddle board size is about 3.3m long and between 75cm-90cm wide. They are much bigger than your average surfboard! Beginners are best to look for an All-Around board...which is built for all water types, balancing speed, stability, and tracking.

STAND UP FOR FUN

TRY PADDLEBOARDING THIS SEPTEMBER

• Flashlight and Safety Whistle - If you plan to paddle in the dark.

• Dry Bag - take a towel and a phone at the minimum. Walk into the water to knee-deep, set the board on to the water’s surface. Place your paddle across your board, climb on and kneel on the board. Practice paddling on your knees until you feel comfortable. Move one foot at a time and place your feet in the place where your knees have been resting. Slowly rise from a squat, with your heels flat, and slide your hands onto your paddle. Engage your core for stability. As soon as you stand up, make your first stroke with your paddle. This will help you build momentum and in turn, remain steadier. Stand with your feet parallel, hip-width apart, toes facing forward, and knees slightly bent. Wider boards are easier for a beginner to balance on.

Extra equipment

• SUP Paddle - about 20-25cm taller than you are.

• PFD (Personal Flotation Device) - Safety first

• Paddle Leash - so your paddle can’t float away if you drop it or fall in.

• Shoes - neoprene shoes will keep your feet warm in cooler weather and won’t damage the board. I prefer bare feet.

4 Walk along Waterloo Road with its old cottages to Turret House. Now modern flats this land was once the home to the poet William Hayley who moved here in 1800 and was a friend of William Blake.

For a longer walk, the Blake’s Trail can also be followed, further exploring the life and times of William Blake. For further information about the Heritage Trail and the notable people it commemorates please visit https://kwatson166.wixsite.com/my-site-fpc

A great little walk for those that would like to learn a bit more about the notable people that have lived, worked, or had an influence in Felpham. I read in last month’s magazine that Felpham Parish Council have created a Platinum Heritage Trail that features some of Felpham’s most notable people. From poets to explorers, this new trail visits the blue plaques placed around the village commemorating these remarkable people. The route also passes some of Felpham’s key landmarks such as St Mary’s Norman Church.

The trail is approximately one mile long, fully accessible and takes a circular route around Felpham, so can be started at any point.

1 The first plaque featured on the trail is that of the Antarctic explorer Ernest Joyce, located in Fisherman’s Gardens on the seafront at the end of Canning Road. The plaque is set within a memorial stone facing the sea.

2 Head east along the seafront and turn into Blakes Road, follow to the end where two plaques commemorating the painter and poet William Blake can be found. First plaque is on the house in which he lived and the second on The Fox Inn nearby where he was arrested for making seditious remarks to a soldier. Rectory Gardens just opposite the pub is well worth a short detour to take a rest and enjoy the peacefulness and wildlife of this hidden garden.

FELPHAM’SFocus PLATINUM HERITAGE TRAIL

5 Take the short walk west along Limmer Lane to Felpham Road. St Mary’s Church opposite is also worth a visit. Turn left by the Post Office and walk along Felpham Road through the village. The next featured plaque can be found on Cavendish Villa of the engraver/artist Charles George Lewis. An outstanding engraver of his time Charles retired to Felpham in 1877. After he died, he was buried in St Mary’s graveyard.

6 The last part of the trail heads down Sea Road to Outram Road where the plaque of Robert Anderson is situated on White Lodge. He was an English Olympic coach and a renowned film fight choreographer, with a cinema career that spanned more than 50 years.

3 Also, on the Fox Inn can be found the plaque featuring the artist George Morland who painted a ship leaving Chichester Harbour on a wall of the original Inn in lieu of rent arrears.

7 Nearby is also a memorial plaque to the Hampden Bomber that crashed here during WW2. Head back to the seafront and along the promenade to where the route started.

Along the route there are many opportunities to stop for a drink or something to eat, and if time allows, a game of putting can be enjoyed at the end of Blakes Road too.

Rolly’s Records is an independent record shop selling second-hand vinyl albums, 45s and 12” singles. We have records across all genres, mostly rock and pop but also country, jazz, swing, reggae and classical as well as a large folk section. All in all, we have over 3,000 items for sale plus a bargain basement, a charity bin and a rarities/collectors section.

We are in Felpham village, just a short walk from the beach, and we opened for business on 1 July 2021. Our ethos is simple: we’re here to have fun and help our customers have some fun. We raise money for charity via raffles, donations, our charity bin and our (not so) regular weekly slot ‘All Request Friday’ where for a small donation every Friday, we will play any request, assuming we have it of course.

One of our main aims is to reconnect people with music and we’re more than happy for people to come to the shop without feeling any pressure to buy anything, just browse through our collection, listen to some tunes and leave with a skip in their step.

We offer a no quibble returns policy as we can’t play every record before we sell it and our gift vouchers are an ideal present for those who have recently acquired a new turntable.

RECONNECTFocus WITH RECORDS

We are always on the look-out for more stock and when we receive someone’s collection we inspect each record and sleeve for condition and version and then price them all up and make an offer. We try to remember that the records we get in are all pre-loved, full of memories and we aim to reflect that in our offers, being as fair as we can to both ourselves and the donor.

So what about me? Well, I’m Peter Rollison and as a Chartered Accountant I’ve been in public practice in one form or another for 36 years but the pandemic and lockdowns made me restless and re-inflamed an itch I had to scratch; the dream of owning my own record shop.

I’m now able to combine the day job with my passion (no, I’m afraid accountancy was never a passion!) and hopefully some of that passion will rub off onto our customers and visitors as they browse through our record display bins.

I have been an avid music fan ever since I can remember and, having my own record collection, I always visited record shops when on holiday, loving the atmosphere and flicking through the vinyl. So, when I noticed that a local estate agent had vacated a double-fronted premises which would allow me to have the record shop one side and my accountancy business the other it was too good an opportunity to pass up.

Due to my accountancy commitments the shop opening hours are more restricted than I would like: Sunday to Wednesday – closed, Thursday – 10 till 6 (late night opening), Friday and Saturday – 10 till 4.

The pickling process happens when fresh fruits or vegetables are immersed in an acidic liquid or saltwater brine until they are effectively both ‘cooked’ and no longer susceptible to spoilage. When we think of pickles, cucumbers (gherkins) commonly come to mind. These are often lacto-fermented in saltwater brine. Lacto-fermentation involves lacto microbial organisms, which turn the naturally occurring sugars in the cucumbers into lactic acid. As this happens the environment rapidly becomes acidic, making it impossible for ‘spoiling’ bacteria to multiply.During the late 1800s and early 1900s, there was an influx of eastern European Jews to the U.S. particularly New York City. These immigrants introduced their kosher dill pickles to America. Cucumbers were scrubbed, and piled in large wooden barrels along with dill, garlic, spices, kosher salt, and clean water. They were left to ferment for a few weeks, producing bright green ‘half sours’, or several months, producing ‘full sours’. They were sold on handcarts as some of the first fast food and became a lucrative source of income for the community.

The word ‘pickle’ derives from the Dutch word ‘pekel’ or the German word ‘pókel,’ which both mean ‘salt’ or ‘brine.’ Refrigeration is a relatively recent introduction so for a long time throughout history pickling was a necessity to preserve food and stop it going bad, providing families with sustenance when fresh food was in short supply during the winter months. As they were so portable they were also useful for sailors and travellers.

IN A PICKLE

have actually been around for thousands of years, we can trace them back to pickled cucumbers in India 2030 BC.

In the 1850s, a Scottish chemist by the name of James Young created paraffin wax, which helped to create a seal for any food preserved in jars, and a few years later, John Mason developed and patented the first Mason jar. These jars were made from a heavyweight glass that was able to tolerate the high temperatures used in canning and processing pickles. These two inventions made home-pickling easier and allowed home cooks to be more creative with the foods they preserved.Pickles today can be sweet, sour, salty, hot or any blend of these. Almost any vegetable or fruit can undergo the process and each area of the world has its own particular favourite. The British love a pickled onion, the Eastern Europeans and Germans prefer lacto-fermented cabbage (sauerkraut), the French love tiny dill-flavoured cornichons (miniature gherkins) and Koreans are famous for kimchi (cabbage, radish, and carrot, flavoured with a fish sauce) while the Japanese prefer pickled plums and daikon (a red radish).

They are a common pregnancy craving, appear in the bible and the works of Shakespeare, and Cleopatra thought that eating them made her more beautiful. What am I talking about? Pickles! YesPicklesreally.

Pickling doesn’t have to be complicated and there are many online tutorials to get you started. Time to get pickling.

MusicSmart choirs are all based around the feeling of community – you don’t need to read music and there are no auditions. For some people joining a choir is a real break from stress, for example if they are a carer or are pressured at work. The combination of the exercise of singing, plus the energy created by great songs and working together as a choir, gives us all a lift.

We are also really excited to introduce our new ‘Recovery Choir’ which is aimed at helping people who are recovering from or living with illness or those experiencing anxiety, stress, loneliness and isolation.

We have two choirs that meet in Felpham at the Methodist Church. Felpham Community Singers welcomes everyone on Tuesday evenings with a tea/coffee afterwards. SingSing is a women’s choir who enjoy performing and singing in harmony, meeting on Friday mornings.

Singing has proven benefits to help with those suffering and living with mental health issues and our gentle, positive approach will bring a feeling of well-being and help with confidence.TheRecovery Choir is held at The Regis School of Music in Bognor on Wednesday mornings and includes gentle breathing exercises, great songs and refreshments. The first session is free. Contact us if you would like to give this choir a try.

LOCAL HISTORY BY SYLVIA ENDACOTT

The name will evoke happy memories for local residents.Hewas a historian, artist, and journalist, who did much to preserve the town’s past. Born in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex he was educated at a preparatory school in Worthing. His work involved becoming a publicity officer with Gaumont British Film Company. After the Second World War a large garden was to become available as a park for the locals, following the death of the owner William Fletcher. Gerard became interested in the story of the park and its history and started to refer to the area as Hotham’s Park, until finally it was officially confirmed that it would be known as Hotham Park. Sadly he died in 1972.

He moved here permanently in 1956 working for the 1st Bognor Post. As a regular contributor with his historical and sometimes controversial articles. He was greatly involved with local amateur theatrical groups, repertory theatre and the Esplanade theatre.

He wrote a number of books, namely ‘Down Hoe Lane’ the ‘Chronicle of a Country Cottage’, ‘Meadow Cottage’ and ‘The Cottage in the Fields’. These books became firm favourites both locally and by people wishing to hear of the development of his cottage and its garden.

• ½ tsp yellow mustard seeds

• Take each peach and cut a small cross in the skin at the base then plunge it into boiling water for 10 seconds. Remove and pop them straight into a bowl of iced water. This process makes the skins easy to remove.

Prepare the peaches

• 6 peppercorns (pink is nice but black or green will be fine)

• Zest and juice from an unwaxed lemon.

• Cut each peach half, remove the stones, and toss the fruit in lemon juice.

• Use a slotted spoon to gently lower the peaches into the warm jar, then simmer the pickling liquid a little longer until it becomes syrupy. Pour it over the peaches to cover and seal the jar. I like to leave the spices in the jar, but you can strain the liquid if you prefer.

• These peaches are ready to eat after a few hours but if you can leave them for six weeks they are sublime. They go really well with cheese or ham and bread for a simple summer supper. Keep refrigerated once opened, but like ice cream the flavour is best if you allow them to come to room temperature before serving.

PICKLED PEACHES

• Place all the ingredients (except the peaches) into a large stainless steel or enamel pan. Don’t use aluminium pans when pickling because the vinegar reacts with the aluminium.

• Lightweight scarf – ideally a large rectangular shape as this means you have lots of options for ways to wear it! You can use them to drape around your shoulders on chillier days, or even make it into a kimono-style jacket (check out my Facebook page for videos on how to do this.

• Layering – that word that’s always bandied about but what does it really mean?! To be honest, we’re effectively layering when you put a sweater over a t-shirt. But in terms of eeking out the summer wardrobe, think a long sleeve top under a strappy dress (very on-trend 90s look!), a fine knit jumper or cardigan over a top, that shacket again, a biker jacket over a jumpsuit, you get the idea! Have a play and see what works. The key is to go for fairly thin or fine pieces layered up. If the material’s too thick and textured, you’ll just add bulk and end up looking like the Michelin man!

It may still be pretty warm right now, but those chillier days and evenings are upon us. It can be a tricky time to know what to wear – too hot for winter woollies, but need something more than t-shirts and summer dresses. Here are my tips for how to transition those summer pieces over and make them work harder for longer:

LAYERINGFocusIT ON

• Switch up summer sandals for trainers or even boots. You’ll need to use your judgement to make sure they work with the outfit, but a pair of white leather trainers can work well with shorts or a denim dress, and long boots under summery skirts or culottes with a jumper give at least another few weeks worth of wear.

• Denim Jackets – I love a denim jacket. It goes well over pretty much any summer dress or skirt and top combo. As well as being a good mid-weight layer, it can also make a slightly dressy outfit more relaxed and therefore more wearable.

To contact VILLAGES IN FOCUS please email: office@infocusmagazines.co.uk 42 Villages in

• Shackets - Is it a shirt? Is it a jacket? It’s both! These are great for wearing over a t-shirt or vest top when you need that extra layer. If you want to buy new, look out for shackets when searching, or they’re sometimes called ‘over shirts’ – especially in menswear. Or, simply take your favourite shirt and wear it open over your outfit – denim shirts work well for this.

Need help with moving from your summer wardrobe to autumn? Come along to one of my fun Style Updates happening early in October. PROMS IN THE PARK SATURDAY 3rd SEPTEMBER

PROMS AT SEA ALEXANDRA THEATRE SUNDAY 4th SEPTEMBER 2.30pm

Throughout the book various new characters appear at intervals, and their stories intersect and intertwine with Cyril’s via a series of coincidences which on the surface might appear contrived, but when the reader reflects on the characters in their own life and the coincidences that brought them together, suddenly make sense.

Truly a weekend of great music and singing. We really hope to see you there!

A GOOD READ

Let me start by saying that this is long book, but in the deft hands of Boyne it is neither weighty nor stodgy. It’s a book about the life of a fictional man, Cyril Avery, and it begins before he’s even born, with his pregnant mother cast out of her strict catholic family and fleeing from her hometown.

We are excited to be back at the Alexandra Theatre, Bognor Regis this year for our Proms Concert. Join us for an afternoon of British music and a selection of melodies themed around the Sea. Flags and your best singing voices are requested as you enjoy Proms classics such as ‘Rule Britannia’ and ‘Land of Hope and Glory’. Tickets: £10 Adults, £8 under 16s and OAPs are available from the Regis Box Office. Tel: 01243 861010 or at the Box Office on the day.

From the opening ‘hook’ to the closing paragraph you’ll be rooting for Cyril, and you’ll laugh and cry along the way. In the touching afterword, Boyne admits that although Cyril and his life are fictional there are many of the author’s own lived experiences included in the plot. The book is all the richer for it.

The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne

Cyril is adopted but struggles to find his place in a loveless family. He is gay, and illegitimate, born in Ireland at the wrong time. This story weaves his major life events with world events such as the AIDS crisis, 9/11, and the ongoing prejudice towards gay men. We follow Cyril from Dublin to Amsterdam to New York and back to Ireland. Throughout his journey the reader is privy to his inner and outer struggles which serve to heighten the confusion, anger and shame that define his existence. But this is not some handwringing doom saga. Boyne brings a wicked playfulness to Cyril’s self-deprecating wit, which commands both affection and empathy.

Workload has been eased and this has been reflected in a calmer, less stressed you. Perhaps because you have been able to delegate. Even if your ‘right hand man’ goes on holiday they will return.

Just when a great partnership situation is starting to develop, you may have to put everything on hold. By exercising patience you will lose nothing as all the glow has not disappeared for good.

SAGITTARIUS

This is not the month for you to sign on the dotted line for that property or renovation project, nor even move the furniture. Major changes to the home would best be put off until the Autumn.

SCORPIO

46HOROSCOPES FOR SEPTEMBER

August may have felt particularly favourable, as if you had turned a corner. Friends and family seemed more smiley and supportive but now September has arrived, will that good energy last?

VIRGO

Money is very much in the forefront of your mind all through September, but if you had just become used to more cash in your pocket, hold your horses, at least until November when the flow returns.

‘One door closes and another door opens’ may have been your recent motto as you’ve had unexpected endings which led to great new beginnings. Hold that door ajar rather than slamming it shut, for now.

GEMINI

Recent career or family progress seems to have ground to a halt. Be patient as things will pick up again in these areas of your life come November. So, enjoy this breathing space and relax.

Things have been going very smoothly with regards to the children. But just as they were becoming more co-operative and helpful it seems they want to ‘push your buttons’ once more, this month.

CAPRICORN

Others rely on your eternal optimism, organisational skills and positivity, so don’t abandon these now, just because of travel setbacks or educational challenges. It’s a big wave but you can ride it.

PISCES

Jupiter is the planet of luck, expansion, opportunity. It will be retrograde (less powerful) this September. This will mean that some of the benefits and advantages heading your way may temporarily go into a ‘savings account’ for spending later.

ARIES

TAURUS

LEO

Words have been flowing very easily lately, perhaps you’ve finally started on that book or poetry project you had been planning. But this month Jupiter brings you the perfect excuse to procrastinate again.

This month you’ll have to rely on logic more than your creative inspiration, if you want to get those projects done, whether they are personal, domestic or earnings related. Track and analyse your dreams.

Friends who have been so helpful and promised more of their time and attention may suddenly head off in another direction. Is it something you said? No, it’s simply Jupiter calling them away.

We have seen an increase in reports of cooking oil thefts across West Sussex. The theft of cooking oil has been identified as a national issue. It is thought that thieves are stealing used cooking oil to turn it into unregulated biodiesel which can then be sold on the black market. We would urge local businesses to be vigilant and keep cooking oil supplies safe and secure:

Whilst there is never any pressure to perform, the encouraging atmosphere and sense of community soon increases pupils’ confidence levels, so that they are excited to show what they’ve been working on. If you’re keen for your child to experience the benefits of drama first hand – visit the Dramatis website and sign them up to a free trial lesson.

During youth lessons, a range of skills are developed through drama-based games and activities. Each term ensures plenty of fun but also culminates in a specific outcome (a digital exam, a class performance or a school showcase).

Youth drama lessons are available for children aged 8-13 and take place at The Regis School on Monday and Tuesday evenings. One-hour lessons are £10 each and are charged per term. For more information visit www.dramatis.co.uk or call Suzy on 07540 792849.

LET’S MAKE A DRAMA OUT OF IT

With over 15 years’ experience as a Trinity and LAMDA teacher, Suzy has a life-long passion for drama and first-hand experience in seeing how it can help people through life’s challenges. Suzy says: “I love creating a nurturing and inclusive space where people feel totally comfortable (and forget that they’re even acting!) By exploring characters and telling stories, our pupils increase in confidence, improve their communication skills, and grow in empathy and understanding.”

September sees Dramatis youth pupils return to the classroom for the start of a new term. Set up in 2016 by Suzy Duxbury (ATCL), Dramatis is a drama school rooted in kindness which Suzy believes is key to getting the best out of pupils – ensuring success both on and off the stage.
