BARONMEAD CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF STAIRLIFTS AND STAIRCLIMBERS

As well as supplying many local customers, you’ll find Baronmead equipment being used in an array of settings including National Trust buildings, schools, prisons, airports and stately homes.

The team now includes servicing technicians and demonstrators, as well as the management team which is headed by Graham, Alan’s son. Graham White has been working at Baronmead since 1993 and took over as Managing Director in 2003.

• Is the stairlift attached to the wall or stairs? Our stairlifts are attached to the tread of the stairs and not the wall.

Based in Flansham, Baronmead has been supplying wheelchair access solutions to customers worldwide since 1982. Baronmead was founded by Alan White and his wife Pam supplying and designing powered stairclimbers for heavy equipment such as safes. This led to Alan developing the Stairmatic stairclimber as an accessibility solution for people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to manage steps.

• Can a stairlift be fitted to ANY stairs? Most stairs can have a stairlift fitted. This includes curved stairs and outside steps in your garden. We supply stairlifts for narrow stairs too, with some models needing just 26” to ensure the customer can swivel comfortably.

LOCAL HISTORY BY SYLVIA ENDACOTT

BY ROGER NASH

a historian, artist, and journalist, who did much to preserve the town’s past. Born in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex he was educated at a preparatory school in Worthing. His work involved becoming a publicity officer with Gaumont British Film Company. By 1933 he was a regular visitor to the area, until he bought Meadow Cottage in Hoe Lane, Flansham in 1938.

After the Second World War a large garden was to become available as a park for the locals, following the death of the owner William Fletcher. Gerard became interested in the story of the park and its history and started to refer to the area as Hotham’s Park, until finally it was officially confirmed that it would be known as Hotham Park. Sadly he died in 1972.

When I first arrived in Bognor in 1979, I was unaware of its history but through the Local History Society I was introduced to the name of Gerard Young. The name will evoke happy memories for local residents.Hewas

What’s not to like!

He moved here permanently in 1956 working for the 1st Bognor Post. As a regular contributor with his historical and sometimes controversial articles. He was greatly involved with local amateur theatrical groups, repertory theatre and the Esplanade theatre.

Gerard Young relaxing.

He wrote a number of books, namely ‘Down Hoe Lane’ the ‘Chronicle of a Country Cottage’, ‘Meadow Cottage’ and ‘The Cottage in the Fields’. These books became firm favourites both locally and by people wishing to hear of the development of his cottage and its garden.

On Saturday afternoon (24 September) in Studio 1 of the Regis Centre, we have a fascinating new ticketed production by London based choral group, BROOMDASHER entitled The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, who have wowed audiences up and down the country.

Lesley Foulkes, co-owner of the brewery, explains “When Covid struck, over 80% of our trade was through our regional publicans, so we acted quickly to alter our offerings. We opened our brewery Drive Through, offered a local home Delivery Service and were blown away by the love, support and enthusiasm shown to us. We loved getting to know the customers personally, and they enjoyed meeting the small brewery team, and understanding more about the passion and craft which goes into each pint of Langham beer.”

The brewery continues to hold this ethos close to its heart. The brewery club for regular customers (now with over 800 members), allows discounts of 10% on their ‘Beer Of The Month’, plus other special offers, is named ‘The Gulp’ club – the collective term for swallows, which were found nesting in the barn when Langham first arrived to brew, back in 2005.

As well as an extensive range of beers in the taproom, the knowledgeable team also serves softs, delicious cake, and authentic Italian pizzas from their neighbour at Langham Stables, Farretti bakery. In addition to welcoming parties and celebrations to the taproom, the team also offers informative beer tasting sessions to help customers make the best beer choice for their special day (regardless of where the celebration takes place). Brewery Tours are also a popular choice.

The brewery hosts regular and much-loved charity events in their courtyard and taproom. Forthcoming events include Bonkers For Conkers (Sunday 9th October) with proceeds going to Chestnut Tree House Hospice Care, Sussex.

Award-winning Langham Brewery is situated near Petworth in the South Downs National Park and offers a delicious range of fresh keg beer, cask conditioned real ale, bottles and cans. The brewery shop and taproom offers a warm welcome to all locals, and to those visiting the area to enjoy the stunning regional landscape.

The brewery has had a busy 18 months; they’ve opened a Taproom, built a club for their regular customers, created a new canning range, extended their range of charity events, and are working hard on the environmental impact of their business.

“We aim to continue to know our local customer base, understand their needs and offer beers which are innovative, distinctive and flavoursome, created with quality ingredients and both traditional and contemporary skills,” adds Lesley. “We look forward to welcoming you soon”. Langham beers can also be found in many local hostelries, including the Dog and Duck and The Waverley in Bognor Regis; The George, Eartham; The Shore Inn at West Wittering and many more, as well as in local farm shops andlanghambrewery.co.uksupermarkets.

Langham Brewery is proud of its environmental mission, which they are consistently looking to improve and develop. The brewery continues to evaluate all aspects of the business and to expand its ‘green’ credentials. In collaboration with the University of Surrey they are examining carbon capture systems which will re-circulate carbon within the brewing process; they have chosen to increase their canned beer range (reducing transportation mileage and carbon footprint); as well as researching eco heating and lighting systems, and finding ways to reduce and recycle other waste.

Try and draw the longest straight line entirely across land between two UK points – without a sea or estuary crossing. There’s only one possibility – and it’s not between Land’s End and John o’Groats. It’s between Bognor and Cape Wrath in Scotland, all 569 miles of it. This mildly interesting bit of trivia was figured out by American-born writer Bill Bryson. He set himself the challenge to explore Britain from south to north, drawing his imaginary line – what he called the Bryson Line – in his travelogue The Road to Little Dribbling (2015). Bognor was first and foremost in his travel plans. Realising that sticking strictly to his ruler line meant inconveniently trespassing through houses and gardens, tramping across trackless fields and fording rivers, Bryson actually meanders widely across the UK, his trip just firmly anchored by the line’s two extreme north-south points: starting here at Bognor and finishing at the lonely promontory of Cape Wrath in northern Scotland. But by contrast, sticking as near as possible to his arrow-straight line, the Bryson Line has already inspired some long-distance charity walks over the last few years, putting the town firmly on the nations’ long-distance walks’ map.

Bryson is ambivalent about Bognor. Although it’s ‘seen better days’, it ‘isn’t such a bad place’ after all with its beach, promenade, its ‘compact and tidy’ town centre and its ‘sylvan retreat’, Hotham Park. Walking along the promenade towards Felpham, he notes its ‘smart modern homes’ before embarking on the 700 Coastliner to Brighton which disappoints as it hardly touches the coast, going through an ‘endless clutter of suburbia’. Pushing further eastwards towards the plunging chalk cliffs east of Seaford, this is coastal Sussex at its best, encapsulated in the book’s cover with its iconic Jolly Fisherman of Skegness skipping along the clifftops of Cuckmere Haven against the brilliant backdrop of the famous Seven Sisters.

Saturday 26th November

It may still be pretty warm right now, but those chillier days and evenings are upon us. It can be a tricky time to know what to wear – too hot for winter woollies, but need something more than t-shirts and summer dresses. Here are my tips for how to transition those summer pieces over and make them work harder for longer:

Need help with moving from your summer wardrobe to autumn? Come along to one of my fun Style Updates happening early in October. I’ll be talking through what’s in the shops, what to buy, and how to wear it. To be the first to hear about dates and to book tickets, sign up to my email list here - https://vickybooker.com/contact-us/ or email me: vicky@vickybooker.com

• Denim Jackets – I love a denim jacket. It goes well over pretty much any summer dress or skirt and top combo. As well as being a good mid-weight layer, it can also make a slightly dressy outfit more relaxed and therefore more wearable.

• Lightweight scarf – ideally a large rectangular shape as this means you have lots of options for ways to wear it! You can use them to drape around your shoulders on chillier days, or even make it into a kimono-style jacket (check out my Facebook page for videos on how to do this.

• Layering – that word that’s always bandied about but what does it really mean?! To be honest, we’re effectively layering when you put a sweater over a t-shirt. But in terms of eeking out the summer wardrobe, think a long sleeve top under a strappy dress (very on-trend 90s look!), a fine knit jumper or cardigan over a top, that shacket again, a biker jacket over a jumpsuit, you get the idea! Have a play and see what works. The key is to go for fairly thin or fine pieces layered up. If the material’s too thick and textured, you’ll just add bulk and end up looking like the Michelin man!

LAYERINGFocusIT ON BY VICKY BOOKER

• Shackets - Is it a shirt? Is it a jacket? It’s both! These are great for wearing over a t-shirt or vest top when you need that extra layer. If you want to buy new, look out for shackets when searching, or they’re sometimes called ‘over shirts’ – especially in menswear. Or, simply take your favourite shirt and wear it open over your outfit – denim shirts work well for this.

• Switch up summer sandals for trainers or even boots. You’ll need to use your judgement to make sure they work with the outfit, but a pair of white leather trainers can work well with shorts or a denim dress, and long boots under summery skirts or culottes with a jumper give at least another few weeks worth of wear.

For a longer walk, the Blake’s Trail can also be followed, further exploring the life and times of William Blake. For further information about the Heritage Trail and the notable people it commemorates please visit https://kwatson166.wixsite.com/my-site-fpc

The trail is approximately one mile long, fully accessible and takes a circular route around Felpham, so can be started at any point.

BY SIMON BAKER IRONS

FELPHAM’SFocus PLATINUM HERITAGE TRAIL

1 The first plaque featured on the trail is that of the Antarctic explorer Ernest Joyce, located in Fisherman’s Gardens on the seafront at the end of Canning Road. The plaque is set within a memorial stone facing the sea.

6 The last part of the trail heads down Sea Road to Outram Road where the plaque of Robert Anderson is situated on White Lodge. He was an English Olympic coach and a renowned film fight choreographer, with a cinema career that spanned more than 50 years.

A great little walk for those that would like to learn a bit more about the notable people that have lived, worked, or had an influence in Felpham. I read in last month’s magazine that Felpham Parish Council have created a Platinum Heritage Trail that features some of Felpham’s most notable people. From poets to explorers, this new trail visits the blue plaques placed around the village commemorating these remarkable people. The route also passes some of Felpham’s key landmarks such as St Mary’s Norman Church.

4 Walk along Waterloo Road with its old cottages to Turret House. Now modern flats this land was once the home to the poet William Hayley who moved here in 1800 and was a friend of William Blake.

2 Head east along the seafront and turn into Blakes Road, follow to the end where two plaques commemorating the painter and poet William Blake can be found. First plaque is on the house in which he lived and the second on The Fox Inn nearby where he was arrested for making seditious remarks to a soldier. Rectory Gardens just opposite the pub is well worth a short detour to take a rest and enjoy the peacefulness and wildlife of this hidden garden.

3 Also, on the Fox Inn can be found the plaque featuring the artist George Morland who painted a ship leaving Chichester Harbour on a wall of the original Inn in lieu of rent arrears.

7 Nearby is also a memorial plaque to the Hampden Bomber that crashed here during WW2. Head back to the seafront and along the promenade to where the route started.

Along the route there are many opportunities to stop for a drink or something to eat, and if time allows, a game of putting can be enjoyed at the end of Blakes Road too.

5 Take the short walk west along Limmer Lane to Felpham Road. St Mary’s Church opposite is also worth a visit. Turn left by the Post Office and walk along Felpham Road through the village. The next featured plaque can be found on Cavendish Villa of the engraver/artist Charles George Lewis. An outstanding engraver of his time Charles retired to Felpham in 1877. After he died, he was buried in St Mary’s graveyard.

BY PETER ROLLISON

Due to my accountancy commitments the shop opening hours are more restricted than I would like: Sunday to Wednesday – closed, Thursday – 10 till 6 (late night opening), Friday and Saturday – 10 till 4.

One of our main aims is to reconnect people with music and we’re more than happy for people to come to the shop without feeling any pressure to buy anything, just browse through our collection, listen to some tunes and leave with a skip in their step.

To contact FELPHAM IN FOCUS please email: office@infocusmagazines.co.uk 22 Felpham in

So what about me? Well, I’m Peter Rollison and as a Chartered Accountant I’ve been in public practice in one form or another for 36 years but the pandemic and lockdowns made me restless and re-inflamed an itch I had to scratch; the dream of owning my own record shop.

We are in Felpham village, just a short walk from the beach, and we opened for business on 1 July 2021. Our ethos is simple: we’re here to have fun and help our customers have some fun. We raise money for charity via raffles, donations, our charity bin and our (not so) regular weekly slot ‘All Request Friday’ where for a small donation every Friday, we will play any request, assuming we have it of course.

I have been an avid music fan ever since I can remember and, having my own record collection, I always visited record shops when on holiday, loving the atmosphere and flicking through the vinyl. So, when I noticed that a local estate agent had vacated a double-fronted premises which would allow me to have the record shop one side and my accountancy business the other it was too good an opportunity to pass up.

RECONNECTFocus WITH RECORDS

Rolly’s Records is an independent record shop selling second-hand vinyl albums, 45s and 12” singles. We have records across all genres, mostly rock and pop but also country, jazz, swing, reggae and classical as well as a large folk section. All in all, we have over 3,000 items for sale plus a bargain basement, a charity bin and a rarities/collectors section.

I’m now able to combine the day job with my passion (no, I’m afraid accountancy was never a passion!) and hopefully some of that passion will rub off onto our customers and visitors as they browse through our record display bins.

We are always on the look-out for more stock and when we receive someone’s collection we inspect each record and sleeve for condition and version and then price them all up and make an offer. We try to remember that the records we get in are all pre-loved, full of memories and we aim to reflect that in our offers, being as fair as we can to both ourselves and the donor.

We offer a no quibble returns policy as we can’t play every record before we sell it and our gift vouchers are an ideal present for those who have recently acquired a new turntable.

With the Autumn fast approaching, we can expect to encounter the onset of “mists”, “mellow fruitfulness” and, I’m sure, many other seasonal clichés. At the same time, we say goodbye for another year to many of our summer visitors, who will be heading South in increasing numbers throughout the month. It might seem sad to see the songbirds that have serenaded us since the spring leave, and there’s always a poignancy to watching chattering sand martins, house martins and swallows pass overhead and fly out to sea to begin their long journeys. But the season brings new spectacles to enjoy at RSPB Pagham Harbour & Medmerry reserves, too, as many other birds drop in on migration, making the most of the food and shelter offered by these special places. Ospreys often visit – hovering over the water to hunt for fish – and rare birds, such as the weird and wonderful wryneck, might stay for a few days.

Yellow wagtails nest on the ground in lowland open, wet grassland, meadows and arable farmland, mainly in central, eastern and some parts of northern England. But their numbers have declined dramatically – the breeding population fell by an estimated 75 per cent between 1970 and 2009 – and so seeing them is becoming harder and harder. Until they migrate, that is, and we get the chance to see them in all their golden glory. The RSPB has been helping yellow wagtails by researching the reasons for their decline and providing advice to farmers on what agricultural practices can best increase the birds’ breeding success in their lowland farmland habitats. Hopefully, this means yellow wagtails will become easier to see in the future. But, until then, watch the feet of the cattle in neighbouring fields this month. You might just catch sight of these beautiful little birds in shimmering flocks, dancing, rising and falling, searching for flies and other insects, or flitting over your heads as they fly out across the marsh.

Join us on one or our guided walks this autumn to witness the wonders of migration. Find out more by visiting our website https://events.rspb.org.uk/paghamharbour or call 01243 641508. And support the RSPB’s conservation work by joining or donating at: https://www. rspb.org.uk/join-and-donate/join-us/

There’s one spectacle I especially look forward to each autumn – the arrival of flocks of yellow wagtails, or ‘wags’ as they’re affectionately known. These beautiful little birds – mostly yellow and green, with long, flicking tails – visit nearby fields to feed up on insects before they, too, migrate to sub-Saharan Africa.

(Volunteer Coordinator and Guide

The gorgeous yellow wagtail can often be spotted in flocks near the coast during the month – watch out for the small, longtailed birds flying up and down around the feet of feeding cattle.

The osprey is a spectacular visitor to RSPB Pagham Harbour & Medmerry in September. Look for these large birds of prey hovering above the water and diving for fish.

• Flashlight and Safety Whistle - If you plan to paddle in the dark.

• SUP Paddle - about 20-25cm taller than you are.

Paddleeasy.boards come in a range of different shapes, lengths, widths, and sizes. The most common paddle board size is about 3.3m long and between 75cm-90cm wide. They are much bigger than your average surfboard! Beginners are best to look for an All-Around board...which is built for all water types, balancing speed, stability, and tracking.

I fell in love with Stand Up Paddleboarding (or SUP) last summer when the local marina offered SUP lessons. Before the end of the first lesson, I was hooked. SUP involves standing on a board while using a paddle to manoeuvre your way through the water. It’s a super-fun way to explore local waterways and get some fresh air and exercise.

STAND UP FOR FUN BY TOM HANCOCK

It’s possible to teach yourself the basics but it’s more fun to take a class with other beginners. There will almost certainly be one near you this summer. So, join the craze and get paddling and don’t forget the sunscreen!

• Paddle Leash - so your paddle can’t float away if you drop it or fall in.

TRY PADDLEBOARDING THIS SEPTEMBER

• Shoes - neoprene shoes will keep your feet warm in cooler weather and won’t damage the board. I prefer bare feet.

Inflatable paddle boards (or iSUPs) can be stored in a small space and easily transported then inflated when you’re ready to use them. Inflateable SUPs also float higher in the water, which is ideal for activities like SUP yoga (a real thing), and they are very durable.

• PFD (Personal Flotation Device) - Safety first

Hard SUPs are made of an EPS foam core wrapped in materials like epoxy, fibreglass, wood, carbon fibre, or plastic. They tend to be slightly faster than inflatable SUPs, so perform better for SUP surfing. But they are harder to store and transport because they’re so big.

Extra equipment

SUP is not difficult. We learned the basics in a day. There are more challenging forms of SUP, like SUP surfing and long-distance SUP touring, but recreational paddleboarding is pretty

• Dry Bag - take a towel and a phone at the minimum. Walk into the water to knee-deep, set the board on to the water’s surface. Place your paddle across your board, climb on and kneel on the board. Practice paddling on your knees until you feel comfortable. Move one foot at a time and place your feet in the place where your knees have been resting. Slowly rise from a squat, with your heels flat, and slide your hands onto your paddle. Engage your core for stability. As soon as you stand up, make your first stroke with your paddle. This will help you build momentum and in turn, remain steadier. Stand with your feet parallel, hip-width apart, toes facing forward, and knees slightly bent. Wider boards are easier for a beginner to balance on.

have actually been around for thousands of years, we can trace them back to pickled cucumbers in India 2030 BC.

In the 1850s, a Scottish chemist by the name of James Young created paraffin wax, which helped to create a seal for any food preserved in jars, and a few years later, John Mason developed and patented the first Mason jar. These jars were made from a heavyweight glass that was able to tolerate the high temperatures used in canning and processing pickles. These two inventions made home-pickling easier and allowed home cooks to be more creative with the foods they preserved.Pickles today can be sweet, sour, salty, hot or any blend of these. Almost any vegetable or fruit can undergo the process and each area of the world has its own particular favourite. The British love a pickled onion, the Eastern Europeans and Germans prefer lacto-fermented cabbage (sauerkraut), the French love tiny dill-flavoured cornichons (miniature gherkins) and Koreans are famous for kimchi (cabbage, radish, and carrot, flavoured with a fish sauce) while the Japanese prefer pickled plums and daikon (a red radish).

The word ‘pickle’ derives from the Dutch word ‘pekel’ or the German word ‘pókel,’ which both mean ‘salt’ or ‘brine.’ Refrigeration is a relatively recent introduction so for a long time throughout history pickling was a necessity to preserve food and stop it going bad, providing families with sustenance when fresh food was in short supply during the winter months. As they were so portable they were also useful for sailors and travellers.

Pickling doesn’t have to be complicated and there are many online tutorials to get you started. Time to get pickling.

The pickling process happens when fresh fruits or vegetables are immersed in an acidic liquid or saltwater brine until they are effectively both ‘cooked’ and no longer susceptible to spoilage. When we think of pickles, cucumbers (gherkins) commonly come to mind. These are often lacto-fermented in saltwater brine. Lacto-fermentation involves lacto microbial organisms, which turn the naturally occurring sugars in the cucumbers into lactic acid. As this happens the environment rapidly becomes acidic, making it impossible for ‘spoiling’ bacteria to multiply.During the late 1800s and early 1900s, there was an influx of eastern European Jews to the U.S. particularly New York City. These immigrants introduced their kosher dill pickles to America. Cucumbers were scrubbed, and piled in large wooden barrels along with dill, garlic, spices, kosher salt, and clean water. They were left to ferment for a few weeks, producing bright green ‘half sours’, or several months, producing ‘full sours’. They were sold on handcarts as some of the first fast food and became a lucrative source of income for the community.

IN A PICKLE

They are a common pregnancy craving, appear in the bible and the works of Shakespeare, and Cleopatra thought that eating them made her more beautiful. What am I talking about? Pickles! YesPicklesreally.

In spite of the similarities, we would be horrified now at what passed for wine back then. Wines were preserved using additions such as heavily sweetened date juice, honey, and spices, and even pepper.

WINE O’CLOCK!

To contact FELPHAM IN FOCUS please email: office@infocusmagazines.co.uk 32 Felpham in Focus

By the Middle Ages, the preference was for full-bodied fortified wines (similar to modern sherries and ports). These were stored in wooden casks.

Winemaking then evolved through the centuries. Producers learned that vines grown on thinner mountain soils seemed to produce superior wines to those grown on the richer plains.

That might have been the end of commercial wine production, but science came to the rescue. Scientists discovered that American vines were resistant to the aphid, and they managed to develop healthy plants by grafting European varieties on to American rootstock. This helped preserve the European wine industry, but also helped the Americans improve their own industry, because prior to this their native vines had produced inferior wine. All of today’s Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines are produced from ‘rescued’ vines!

Manufacturers can now choose from a wide variety of grapes, and modern wine-making techniques have made wines more standardised and reliable. In recent years though, there has been a move back to artisan winemaking by passionate manufacturers who want more individuality, uniqueness or ‘terroir’.

At first grapes were grown only for eating so it is likely that the first wine was made accidentally. In the full sun of the Middle East, it would have taken just a few hours for ripe juicy grapes to begin to ferment. Fermentation is the process by which the natural sugars in the fruit, aided by the natural yeast present in the bloom on the grape skins are turned into alcohol. It must have been an incredibly happy accident because before long wine was being made throughout the Mediterranean.Winemanufacture today bears a lot of similarities to those used in the ancient methods of viticulture (winemaking). In Egypt grapes were collected in wicker baskets, then trodden in huge wooden vats to kickstart the fermentation process. The crushed grapes, juice and skins were poured into loosely corked earthenware jars and left to finish the fermentation process. Finally, the mixture was filtered, flavoured, and poured into sealed amphorae.

As stated earlier, all European vines originated from the same species, and unfortunately this made them vulnerable to pests and diseases (a similar problem affects banana producers nowadays). When a highly destructive aphid called the grape phylloxera reached Europe at the beginning of the 20th century it decimated almost all of the Old-World vines in a few short years.

So, treat your glass of Chardonnay with extra respect as you raise it in a toast to and say ‘Cheers!’

Evidence of Palaeolithic grape pips uncovered at archaeological sites indicates humans were eating grapes as early as 7000BC. Some 3500 years later Egyptians and Phoenicians planted the first vineyards and tended the vines.

BY TRACEY ANDERSON

Did you know that there are around 60 species of vine but only one that bears the fruit which when fermented produces wine? From that one species come all the different varieties used in wine production today.

HOW TO MAKE SATELLITE

Some TVs such as Philips sets sold across Europe, where there is no Freesat, may have a satellite aerial socket even though they are not officially Freesat sets. Instead of neatly sorting only the UK Freesat channels they randomly grab any programmes coming off the satellite. You have to do the sorting. Only enthusiastic DIYers will want to bother with the hassle this brings.

It is possible is to forget about aerials altogether and watch TV from the Internet. But this requires a reliable and fast broadband connection with fixed charge per month for unlimited data. In general, broadcast is best for bog-standard TV. Be wary of TV sets that can only work with broadband. I nearly bought one by mistake!

For short spells recently, TV interference in parts of Sussex was so bad that even some supposedly French-proofed (vertically polarised) Freeview signals from the Isle of Wight were swamped. Sky News on channel 233 mysteriously vanished. So now is the time to look at the other Frenchproofing option – Freesat satellite reception.

TV WORK BY BARRY FOX

built-in option to display the satellite signal strength, and so make it easier to adjust dish position”

Mosteast.people will opt for paying an aerial fitter to fix a dish. But competent DIY-ers can do it themselves (as long as it is safe and low). Caravaners and canal boat owners regularly do it. DIY dish kits start at around £50. The kit may include a simple signal strength meter to help find the invisible ‘bird’. But a satellite STB is able to display the signal strength on your TV screen, as bars. Go to the STB’s settings options.

Either way, use a compass to roughly find 28 E, then wiggle the dish gently up and down and side to side while looking at the TV screen, or getting someone else to look and shout. A meter has a simple dial pointer and probably also whistles as the signal gets stronger. Be warned that dish pointing needs to be much more accurate than for a UHF Freeview aerial. Be careful not to kink the cable because even when straightened again it will probably not work. Note that tree leaves will block satellite signals.

To contact Barry Fox visit Freesatwww.tekkiepix.comreceivershavea

An existing Sky satellite dish will work with a Freesat TV or STB. A Sky satellite receiver will usually get a lot of free TV channels, even when the Sky subscription has expired. Or you can install a new Sky/ Freesat satellite dish. The dish does not need to be high on the roof. It can be near ground level, bolted to a wall or on a pole in the garden, as long as it has a clear line of sight on the invisible satellite high in the sky at 28 degrees

Some modern TV sets (eg. from LG) come ready-equipped to receive Freesat. They have an F-connector for a satellite dish as well as a standard coax TV aerial socket. Other TVs can easily be connected to a Freesat set-top-box (STB) or recorder, preferably by modern HDMI cable or if necessary old-style Scart.

But with food prices soaring and less produce available on the supermarket shelves, added to an increased interest in plant-based diets and locally sourced food, allotments are enjoying a popularity surge.

• Social. It’s a brilliant way to meet friendly, like-minded people of all ages.

To acquire an allotment, simply approach your council. Price and availability varies around the country and in some areas there are waiting lists. But councils across the country are taking allotments and community gardens much more seriously now, and many are actively seeking to provide new sites. If an available plot is too large for your personal needs you may be able to rent half or find a like-minded friend to share it with. Enquire today and you and your family could soon, quite literally, be reaping the benefits!

During World War II and immediately afterwards, almost everyone with a garden grew fruit and vegetables. Food was rationed so people supplemented their diet with produce they’d grown in their own back garden, or down on their allotment.

Is it any wonder that so many of us are taking matters into our own hands, deciding to emulate our grandparents and grow our own food? But growing food requires space, and modern housing often means tiny gardens. This is where allotments come into their own.

During the 1960’s allotments began to go out of fashion and continued to decline in popularity. As a society we were more affluent; more likely to buy what produce we needed from the local supermarket, and vegetable gardening just wasn’t considered sexy!

And the statistics in the news are scary. The number of food banks is growing exponentially as families struggle to put even the most basic provisions on the table. There are concerns about additives and pesticides on shop-bought fruit and veg, yet the cost of organic food puts it out of the reach of the most consumers.

Allotments don’t just benefit the humans who tend them. Each plot is a complex web of plants, micro-organisms, fungi, insects, and animals supporting pollination and offering a refuge for wildlife. To celebrate all the lovely bugs and beasties on Britain’s allotments, this year’s National Allotments Week encouraged gardeners to take part in a mini-beast monitoring survey. Bugs are really important to the healthy functioning of an allotment. They pollinate fruit and veg, control pests, and improve the soil. They are nature’s vital helpers.

Water flushes toxins from our body, cushions and lubricates our joints and carries oxygen and nutrients into our cells. Water also helps regulate our body temperature and assists digestion.

even makes it harder to lose weight. Without enough water our bodies can’t metabolise the fat stored in cells as effectively, so the fat remains in the body. And water is also a natural appetite suppressant so drinking plenty of water keeps us feeling full and less likely to eat. So keep drinking water all year round because as the title says, water works!

Covering the early days of Royal flying, the formation of the King’s Flight and the Queen’s Flight, up to the present day, he will share history and behind the scenes experiences, along with some personal reminiscences.Grahamjoined the RAF as a pilot in 1964, and flew for 36 years, amassing a total of 13,500 hours. In 1981, he was selected for the Queen’s Flight, and in 1995, (after that unit’s disbandment), he moved to No 32 (the Royal) Squadron, at RAF Northolt, completing in all over 2200 Royal flights, retiring in December 2000. During the last 20 years of his career he flew members of the Royal family and Government ministers.

The human body is made up primarily of water. Around 85% of the brain, 80% of blood and 70% of muscle is water. This is why maintaining our hydration levels is so important.

INGREDIENTS

• 3 thin ginger slices (minus the skin)

SWEET AND SOUR AND UTTERLY DELICIOUS

• 1 cinnamon stick

• ½ tsp yellow mustard seeds

• Zest and juice from an unwaxed lemon.

Prepare the pickling liquid

• These peaches are ready to eat after a few hours but if you can leave them for six weeks they are sublime. They go really well with cheese or ham and bread for a simple summer supper. Keep refrigerated once opened, but like ice cream the flavour is best if you allow them to come to room temperature before serving.

• Scrub the jar in warm soapy water, rinse it thoroughly, then and put it in a low oven to dry it and keep it warm.

• Take each peach and cut a small cross in the skin at the base then plunge it into boiling water for 10 seconds. Remove and pop them straight into a bowl of iced water. This process makes the skins easy to remove.

• 4 cloves

• Place all the ingredients (except the peaches) into a large stainless steel or enamel pan. Don’t use aluminium pans when pickling because the vinegar reacts with the aluminium.

• 6 peppercorns (pink is nice but black or green will be fine)

• Use a slotted spoon to gently lower the peaches into the warm jar, then simmer the pickling liquid a little longer until it becomes syrupy. Pour it over the peaches to cover and seal the jar. I like to leave the spices in the jar, but you can strain the liquid if you prefer.

PICKLED PEACHES

1.2kg just ripe but still firm peaches (about 10)

• 1 litre white wine vinegar

• Heat the ingredients over a low heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Increase the heat and bring to the boil, then simmer for 5 minutes. Lower the heat again, add the peaches and simmer gently for 5 to 10 minutes. The fruit should be just soft when pierced with a sharp knife.

• 550g granulated sugar

• 1 x large jar (1.5 litres) or two smaller ones

METHOD

To contact FELPHAM IN FOCUS please email: office@infocusmagazines.co.uk 46 Felpham in Focus

• Cut each peach half, remove the stones, and toss the fruit in lemon juice.

BY NATASHA DONOVAN

Let me start by saying that this is long book, but in the deft hands of Boyne it is neither weighty nor stodgy. It’s a book about the life of a fictional man, Cyril Avery, and it begins before he’s even born, with his pregnant mother cast out of her strict catholic family and fleeing from her hometown.

From the opening ‘hook’ to the closing paragraph you’ll be rooting for Cyril, and you’ll laugh and cry along the way. In the touching afterword, Boyne admits that although Cyril and his life are fictional there are many of the author’s own lived experiences included in the plot. The book is all the richer for it.

Throughout the book various new characters appear at intervals, and their stories intersect and intertwine with Cyril’s via a series of coincidences which on the surface might appear contrived, but when the reader reflects on the characters in their own life and the coincidences that brought them together, suddenly make sense.

A GOOD READ

Cyril is adopted but struggles to find his place in a loveless family. He is gay, and illegitimate, born in Ireland at the wrong time. This story weaves his major life events with world events such as the AIDS crisis, 9/11, and the ongoing prejudice towards gay men. We follow Cyril from Dublin to Amsterdam to New York and back to Ireland. Throughout his journey the reader is privy to his inner and outer struggles which serve to heighten the confusion, anger and shame that define his existence. But this is not some handwringing doom saga. Boyne brings a wicked playfulness to Cyril’s self-deprecating wit, which commands both affection and empathy.

COMMITTEE AND COUNCIL MEETINGS

Main Council Meeting: Tuesday 6 September, 6.15pm

PUBLIC SESSION

Item MC 45. Councillor Glen Hewlett queried the outcome of the meeting held on 24th June 2022 at Bognor Regis Town Hall, Council Chamber between Aldingbourne Rife Footpaths and Country Park Action Group and Arun District Council. The Clerk confirmed that Doug Millen had attended the meeting and reported that the planning contravention matters at Brooks Field are still with Arun District Council solicitors for consideration. Councillor Glen Hewlett expressed his disappointment that this was the case as the matter had been with solicitors since March and meanwhile the landowner continues their actions on the field.

Minutes from the meeting of the Planning & Licensing Committee

Item PL 37. BOGNOR REGIS GOLF CLUB Councillor Glen Hewlett advised that anyone who made a comment on the applications FP/274/21/OUT (Bognor Golf Club application) and M/16/22/PL (Ancton Golf Course application) will have received an email from Arun Planning Department advising that new documents have been lodged. Clerk to update website, minutes and Felpham Matters to advise that: Felpham Parish Council have received notification of numerous documents related to both applications. This was discussed at the Planning & Licencing Advisory Committee meeting on 12th July 2022, and we encourage people to comment as they see fit. Existing objections will still count, and new objections should be based on the new documents issued.

Minutes from the meeting of the Projects & Resilience Committee

Item: PR 27. EXTERNAL PROJECTS Councillor Gloria Moss enquired regarding the expected installation time of the barbecues. The Clerk confirmed that these had been ordered. Clerk to check progress of the order. The Clerk outlined responses received from Arun District Council regarding the pavilion in King George V Recreation Ground. Oliver Handson, Environmental Strategy Services Manager had confirmed that the pavilion currently forms part of the Tivoli Greenspace Management Contract and assets leased under this contract. Councillor Paul English suggested that the Clerk write to Oliver Handson requesting a copy of the lease and copy this to Councillor David Edwards.

Item PR 28. PROJECTS FOR CONSIDERATION AND PROMOTION

The event was held mid-August in order to meet the necessary tide times for the annual firework display has been declared a resounding success by all including the media.

FUN ON THE PROM

Councillor Gloria Moss outlined the proposal for shelters along Felpham promenade. Councillors welcomed the ideas of shelters in Felpham but raised concerns regarding the fact that this is a shared promenade, and that the geography of the area may not lend itself well to these. In addition, the openings along the promenade to the beach estate are privately owned and it is unlikely that these could be utilised. Councillor Paul English suggested that shelters could be placed in other areas throughout Felpham including King George V Recreation Ground. Councillor Gloria Moss thanked Councillor Matthew Copeland for his suggestion and requested that he bring forward the proposal to the Projects Committee in greater detail.

To his north, for sure, the original beach huts: a single row of white-painted, wooden huts, some with verandas and some not, with the houses of Culver Road behind. If there at dawn or dusk, he would also have seen a colony of rabbits whose burrows were under the huts and around theLookinggreensward.south, in the foreground, would have been more rabbits (there were so many) whilst beyond the greensward, he would have seen the coastline with vegetation, shingle and a lot of sand sloping gently to the sea. Looking further out, in the offing (and at night!) he would have spied the revolving light of the Owers Light Vessel several miles south-east of Selsey Bill, at Owers Rocks, warning sailors of theirTohazard.thewest, were tamarisks (salt cedar trees, two of which remain) as well as the enchanting sight of railway carriages, let as holiday homes, on the spot that is now the Felpham Sailing Club. West of the railway carriages, he would have enjoyed fish and chips or a banana-split (maybe both!) at the Boathouse, run by “Charlie” (always in his hat – a trilby?) from an old boathouse at the top of Blake’s Road, formerly for coastguard use. He might also have said hello to Colonel Penfold, redoubtably in charge of the Foreshore Office, on the other side of Blakes Road.

A FELPHAM VILLAGE CONSERVATION SOCIETY PERSPECTIVE

Today, the East and West Greenswards are designated as Local Green Spaces under the Felpham Neighbourhood Plan. The little boy, now a man in his 60s, continues to visit Felpham beach - as do so many people every day of the year. Felpham Village Conservation Society helps to maintain the beauty and integrity of Felpham beach by organising monthly Beach Cleans for volunteers, starting at the East Greensward, on the second Saturday of each month, whatever the weather. Please help us to protect Felpham beach for animal, vegetable and mineral, now and into the future, by not dropping litter (as if you would) and by joining in the monthly Beach Clean. We look forward to seeing you there. To find out more about Felpham Village Conservation Society, see: https://felphamvillageconservation.co.uk or email: mail@felphamvillageconservation.co.uk

On the beach in front of “Charlie’s” and the Foreshore Office, he might have noticed a group of children having a riding lesson under the tutelage of the proprietor of the riding stables on Felpham Road or, in the summer, a Punch and Judy Show (presented by Mr Jennings maybe?).

The second was a tremendous success with over 400 people joining us to listen to a country themed afternoon. Emily Ann Johnston started the afternoon off and then Alabama Stills took to the bandstand and played many well-known country tunes to the delight of the audience.

At all of these events we have been raising money for our Square Meal Project which aims to provide food for local children who just do not get enough to eat. Several of the local primary schools help us by donating vouchers to these needy families. You can help us at any time with this project by texting FOOD4KIDS 5 to 70450. The final number is the amount you want to give, you just change it to your amount. The number 5 donates £5.00 and even a 1 for £1.00 will help. All the local kids will be extremely grateful for any support you can give them.

As I write this we are in the final planning of the Rock and Roll afternoon in August with Rockin’ Colin and the band Sweeney Todd playing those unforgettable tunes from the 6o’s.

Our final event is on September 11th and is totally different to any of the others that we have organised with the Bognor Town Council this year. The venue is the bandstand on the seafront with the community group, Igloo Music, performing between 2pm and 4pm. Bognor Regis Town manager Robbie Blake refuses to compromise the club’s on-pitch ethos as the Rocks head into the new Isthmian premier division campaign – and supporters are delighted.

BY CARL ELDRIDGE

The Nyewood Lane outfit kick-off the season on 13 August at home to Hornchurch (3pm kickoff) and Blake has set his sights on being in play-off contention for potential promotion come the end of the season. The Rocks finished ninth, the last time of asking, in a season that saw him take over managerial duties from the legendary Jack Pearce – who has been with the club for 52 years and is still heavily involved behind the scenes – as last term concluded.

BOGNORFocusROCKS

Top: Nick Dembele. Below: Harvey Whyte, club skipper in action in 1-1 draw v Pompey XI pre-season friendly.

For more info visit https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/bognorregistownfc or see the club’s social media feeds.

This then is the former Premier League star’s first full season at the helm and, along with assistant manager Jamie Howell, he believes his squad is well equipped to make a push for a lofty spot at the business end of the action next May.

And Blake says all of the new faces buy into his method of playing the game – on the front foot. He added: “This club has a history of playing the game in the right way – expansive football that is intended to be effective but entertaining at the same time. We want to play very much on the front foot and we believe we have the players to do this and so far, our pre-season games have demonstrated that we are on the right

“Ofpath.course, there is a long season ahead but we are determined to stick to our principles and maintain the ethos of taking the game to the opposition, pressing high and trying to determine the outcome of the game by our actions. The challenge in this league is having the bravery to play that way week in, week out because you are undoubtedly going to come up against some strong teams that will do their best to spoil the way you play. Our job is to stay calm, play the only way we know how and try to take advantage of the chances we create to get our rewards.”

The great thing for the club is that the fans buy in to the process and to prove this you only have to see that attendances are up and new supporters are being attracted all the time. The Nye Camp, as the ground is affectionately known, offers a friendly welcome with superb facilities, new 375-seated grandstand and a fantastic clubhouse. Do come along and cheer on the Rocks!

DenyerMartinDenyerMartin

Blake has been busy recruiting new players and chief amongst them is powerful striker Nick Dembele, who has joined from Gosport Borough. Joining the goal-getter through the door are highly regarded operatives such as Tom Bragg, on loan from Eastleigh, Sam De St Croix from Met Police, Worthing attacker Tom Chalaye, winger Isaac Olaniyan from the AFC Wimbledon youth ranks and Joe Rabbetts, on loan from Dorking Wanderers.

With over 15 years’ experience as a Trinity and LAMDA teacher, Suzy has a life-long passion for drama and first-hand experience in seeing how it can help people through life’s challenges. Suzy says: “I love creating a nurturing and inclusive space where people feel totally comfortable (and forget that they’re even acting!) By exploring characters and telling stories, our pupils increase in confidence, improve their communication skills, and grow in empathy and understanding.”

Start small – Don’t plan a two-week family camping holiday on the Isle of Wight if the closest you’ve ever come to camping before this year is enjoying breakfast on a hotel patio in Majorca.

Test the water – If it’s your family’s first foray into camping it’s probably best to try a couple of local excursions before embarking on a full-scale vacation, particularly if you have young children (or teens). That way, if it’s a disaster, it’s not too difficult to return home.

Take company – Consider going with another family. Children in a group tend to occupy each other which leaves more time for the adults to relax.

LET’S MAKE A DRAMA OUT OF IT

During youth lessons, a range of skills are developed through drama-based games and activities. Each term ensures plenty of fun but also culminates in a specific outcome (a digital exam, a class performance or a school showcase).

Whilst there is never any pressure to perform, the encouraging atmosphere and sense of community soon increases pupils’ confidence levels, so that they are excited to show what they’ve been working on. If you’re keen for your child to experience the benefits of drama first hand – visit the Dramatis website and sign them up to a free trial lesson.

Be prepared – Pack a first aid kit which includes pain and cough relief, bug spray and plasters. And don’t forget lots of kid-friendly food and snacks. Don’t over-schedule – A camping trip is a chance to get back to basics in more ways than one. Building a campfire, bug hunting, pond dipping, or sitting on the bank of a river eating ice cream while dangling your feet in the water can all fill an afternoon and make wonderful memories. The chances are that if you camp once you’ll go back for more.

One side effect of the pandemic was that it sparked (or in some cases rekindled) a fondness for being outdoors, and camping increased in popularity. Now, with the price of fuel and food soaring, most of us have less disposable income for the family holiday so camping is enjoying an extended renaissance. If you are trying family camping for the first time here are some top tips:

Plan for down time – Pack a couple of board games and books in case the novelty of camping wears off after a while, or the kids are tired or (heaven forbid) it rains!

HAPPY CAMPERS BY LOUISE ADDISON

September sees Dramatis youth pupils return to the classroom for the start of a new term. Set up in 2016 by Suzy Duxbury (ATCL), Dramatis is a drama school rooted in kindness which Suzy believes is key to getting the best out of pupils – ensuring success both on and off the stage.

Youth drama lessons are available for children aged 8-13 and take place at The Regis School on Monday and Tuesday evenings. One-hour lessons are £10 each and are charged per term. For more information visit www.dramatis.co.uk or call Suzy on 07540 792849.

This is not the month for you to sign on the dotted line for that property or renovation project, nor even move the furniture. Major changes to the home would best be put off until the Autumn.

Words have been flowing very easily lately, perhaps you’ve finally started on that book or poetry project you had been planning. But this month Jupiter brings you the perfect excuse to procrastinate again.

This month you’ll have to rely on logic more than your creative inspiration, if you want to get those projects done, whether they are personal, domestic or earnings related. Track and analyse your dreams.

Recent career or family progress seems to have ground to a halt. Be patient as things will pick up again in these areas of your life come November. So, enjoy this breathing space and relax.

70HOROSCOPES FOR SEPTEMBER

SCORPIO

SAGITTARIUS

PISCES

Jupiter is the planet of luck, expansion, opportunity. It will be retrograde (less powerful) this September. This will mean that some of the benefits and advantages heading your way may temporarily go into a ‘savings account’ for spending later.
