Dear All,
I’m really hoping that March heralds the arrival of spring in West Sussex and we can say goodbye to the rain. It will be wonderful to welcome the gradual increase in daylight hours as the clocks go forward on Sunday 31 March, as well as all the spring bulbs, daffodils and crocuses bursting into bloom.
Wildflowers like celandines will start to dot the landscape with their bright yellow petals. Birds will be singing love songs and building nests as the mating season gets underway and every garden, field and hedgerow will start growing like mad!
As always, please do send in any article ideas you would like to see in the magazine or write yourself, or if you are a budding photographer please do send in your photos.
Enjoy the magical month of March and Happy Easter to you all, Kate.

CHOCOLATE EGGS
BY GEMMA BROWN
A HISTORY OF EASTER’S DELECTABLE DELIGHTS
The association of chocolate eggs with Easter is a delightful convergence of cultural, religious, and culinary histories. Spanning centuries and continents, the story of how chocolate eggs became synonymous with Easter reveals a fascinating blend of tradition, innovation, and symbolism.
The egg has long been a symbol of new life and rebirth, a sentiment shared by many cultures and religions. In ancient times, eggs were often decorated in bright colours and given as gifts during spring festivals to celebrate the end of winter and the arrival of new life. This practice was adopted by early Christians as a symbol of Jesus Christ’s resurrection, which is commemorated during Easter. The hard shell of the egg represented the sealed Tomb of Christ, and cracking the egg symbolized his resurrection from the dead.
In medieval Europe, the Christian observance of Lent, the forty days leading up to Easter, involved strict fasting rules. One such rule prohibited the consumption of eggs. However, chickens (who don’t understand about Lent) continued to lay eggs during this period, leading to an excess by the time Easter arrived. This surplus led to the tradition of boiling eggs to preserve them, which were then decorated and given as Easter gifts.
The transition from real eggs to edible confectionery eggs began in the 17th and 18th centuries. Initially, these were not made of chocolate but of sugar or marzipan. The earliest chocolate eggs were solid, and a luxury item, enjoyed primarily by the wealthy due to the high cost of chocolate at the time.
The Industrial Revolution brought significant advancements in chocolate production. The invention of the chocolate press in the 1820s by Conrad Van Houten helped in extracting cocoa butter from roasted cocoa beans. This process made chocolate more affordable and easier to mould into shapes, paving the way for the hollow chocolate egg.
In the 19th century, companies like J.S. Fry & Sons in Britain began mass-producing chocolate eggs. John Cadbury followed suit in 1875, perfecting the art of the hollow egg and bringing it to a wider market. The Cadbury Easter egg was a game-changer, transforming the chocolate egg from a luxury to a popular treat accessible to the general public.
The history of chocolate eggs at Easter is a rich tapestry that weaves together religious tradition, culinary innovation, and cultural celebration. From ancient symbolisms of new life and rebirth to the modern-day delights of Easter egg hunts and chocolate treats, the chocolate egg has become an enduring and beloved symbol of Easter celebrations around the world, enjoyed by all ages.

BATHROOM SECRETS BY JASON PIERCE
Plumbase might be the best kept bathroom secret in Bognor Regis! It’s amazing how often we hear customers tell us: “I never knew you were here, but I’m so glad I’ve discovered you now”.
You might not expect to find a bathroom showroom with 40 display settings, and a large car park on the edge of a residential area, but that’s what we are. We’ve been established at this site in Fairlands, North Bersted, Bognor Regis for 39 years under different names and ownerships. The one thing that hasn’t really changed much over that time is the staff. Our showroom sales team of three have a combined company experience of 83 years in bathroom design and sales. Though we’re part of an extensive national group we pride ourselves on our ‘family business’ values putting customer service first and foremost.
We continually update our showroom to reflect the latest bathroom designs, trends and innovations enabling us to provide our customers with a choice to suit all budgets. We offer a free appointment based in-store design service and are happy to give our clients the time they need and expert advice to help make their bathroom dreams become a reality.
The combination of excellent hands-on displays, staff product knowledge and experience, together with free local delivery provides a level of service and support that online bathroom suppliers cannot possibly achieve. Our showroom team are looking forward to your visit as you start off your new bathroom journey very soon.

LOCAL HISTORY
BY SYLVIA ENDACOTT
As you sit at the level crossing in Woodgate waiting for the increasing number of trains to pass, it is worth remembering that this was originally the main railway station for the area but also Bognor Regis. We have to view the period around the 1840’s to understand that the town had no railway, and the nearest lines were the Ford to Chichester line which opened in June 1846.
For the residents of Bognor a train journey, if they could afford it, would have necessitated a journey to Woodgate to catch the train. Those who were rich enough would have possibly availed themselves of the regular ‘fly’ service to and from the station (today a taxi) but for the less well off a walk into the town was the order of the day. Of course the traffic on this country lane would have been quite different to today’s lorries and heavy transport.
This station was on the single line between Littlehampton and Chichester. Eventually work commenced on a new branch leaving the main line at Barnham down into Bognor which was opened on 1 June 1864 and then the Woodgate station closed and also the Yapton station. A newspaper report following the opening of the line in June stated that, “the omnibus journey from Woodgate (to Bognor)was a great drawback, and to accomplish this was more painful than the entire journey from London to Woodgate. Some inconvenience was felt by the closing of Yapton and Woodgate stations by those who lived in the adjoining villages”.

PUTTING A STAMP ON HISTORY
BY MIKE HARDING FROM SAVE OUR VILLAGE POST OFFICE CAMPAIGN
The Save Our Village Post Office Campaign has brought people even closer in our community. The joy of this has been the new friends we have made, and the stories coming to light. And nothing could be more relevant to the fight for the Post Office than this one.
We’re in the dining room of a cottage in the heart of Felpham village with Mike and Judy Armson. Judy is the great-great-greatniece of Sir Rowland Hill (1795-1879), stamp pioneer and creator of the Post Office as we know it today. He was a remarkable man, in the true tradition of Victorian entrepreneurs. Rowland was an inventor, social reformer, teacher and Commissioner in Australia. His brothers were also pioneers, one was an MP and involved in prison reform. Another brother, Edwin, invented the envelope! Judy is truly bringing the past up, close and personal.
Sir Rowland’s great triumph was to make the sender pay for the stamp (previously the receiver had to, which was extremely inefficient and open to fraud), and to make it affordable for those less well-off. Business expanded hugely and letter-writing became a daily communication.
Judy’s magnificent archive, after years of research, is extensive: books, photographs, folios, press clippings of, not just Sir Rowland himself but also, the generations which followed. There are stories everywhere you look – her mother and father’s time in India, for example, and not least her own tale. Hovering over all the generations which followed is the legend of Sir Rowland himself. Judy doesn’t believe that his achievements were passed on through the family verbally very much. However, there were occasional moments. Mum hoped she might find a Penny Black hidden away in some dusty corner. In mint condition today, a Penny Black would be worth thousands of pounds! Sadly, she never found the precious stamp.
Sir Rowland is buried in Westminster Abbey and is remembered worldwide. Judy showed me a book by Jack Zhang which was a bestseller in China. Mr Zhang lives in South Ruislip. Everywhere in our families there are stories waiting to be told. Judy brought her story alive in the unique way only a family member can. Let’s hear yours!
NEWS FLASH!! We have also reached out to another important section of our community for their views on the Post Office - the DOGS! Watch out for their incisive comments in a series of videos on social media. Check us out on Instagram @saveourpostoffice.felpham

NESTING TIMES
BY ALICE MCDOUGALL (RSPB Volunteer)
March is the month when many of our birds start building their nests. You might notice more bird song around this time, a sign that they are marking out their territory ready to mate. You might also see more activity among our earlier nesters as they gather materials – twigs, grasses, moss, lichen, feathers, and we are seeing more and more manmade materials used.
One of the fascinating things about birds’ nests is the individuality between species. From the intricately woven cup nests of song birds, to the simple scrapes of some coastal residents; the coned mud constructions of House Martins to the use of tree hollows and reed beds. The diversity in nests reminds us of the complexity of our fascinating bird world. Perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of this is that many birds build new nests without any instruction on how to do so.
Long tailed tit nest.
As the evenings get lighter and the weather warms, which birds are you likely to see nesting?
One of the most elaborate and sophisticated nests of our song birds is that of the Long Tailed Tit, which by March will have already begun nest building activities. These are intricate domed constructions, built from lichen, cobwebs and moss, and lined with feathers. Grey Herons, which nest in tree top colonies called heronries, return each year around February to begin nest renovations ready to lay their eggs in March. Blackbirds meticulously create a woven cup of straw, twigs and plants which is then lined with mud and grass. It can take up to two weeks to build the nest so they start early. A less sophisticated nest structure is that of the Wood Pigeon which may start building as early as January. You may see these simple stick nests in bushes, trees or ledges.
We can help by ensuring we stay well away from nests – disturbing them is a criminal offence. Birds such as Chiffchaffs, Skylarks and Yellowhammers all nest in grass and under hedges; some coastal birds are also very difficult to spot, blending in well with their surroundings. It is therefore essential that where possible, we stick to the paths and ensure dogs are kept on leads.
Find out more about the nesting and breeding habits of our local birds by joining one of our guided walks or other events this month. Visit our website https://events.rspb.org.uk/ paghamharbour or call 01243 641508 for more information and to book.

FLANSHAM PARK HEALTH CENTRE
After 20 years working for Flansham Park our current Practice Manager, Susie Devine, has decided now is the right time for her step down. We will miss her and wish her all the best.
We’re working with NHS England and our local Integrated Care Service to try and access funding to improve our telephone system. With potential approximate costs of £20,000 -£40,000 this is taking lots of work and reviews with potential new suppliers. Fingers are being kept crossed that we can get funding to improve things soon.
Struggling to get an appointment?
We had over 220 appointments that patients did not attend (DNA) during January 2024.
Please ensure if you are unable to attend that you cancel your appointment. This allows another patient to be seen.
Appointments We Offer

Pre-bookable face to face
On the day telephone consultations
Pre-bookable telephone consultations
Online consultations
We know that getting an appointment isn’t always easy. The simple reason is that demand is outstripping the number of appointments we can offer. We have been w orking with the Patient Participation Group on this issue so if you want to be more involved please email flanshampark.ppg@nhs.net or contact the surgery.
The issue is extremely complex and is indicative of the pressure the entire NHS is under. GPs aren’t funded per appointment offered, just an amount per registered patient. This does mean we have a fixed budget to work with to employ all the staff needed to run a GP surgery. With secondary care settings (i.e. hospitals) under such pressure, and with some waiting lists reaching two years, this has a knock -on effect to us. Patients still need care while waiting for specialist interventions, and thus are needing more and more appointments. We are doing our best but need the help of patients to seek alternative help where appropriate, from community pharmacies for minor ailments.
Flu Vaccinations
We are still administering flu jabs up to 31 st March 2024 so if you are in the eligible cohort of:
the over 65,
16-64 with underlying health conditions
Aged 50 or over

ON GOLDEN BLADES
BY JAMES STEWART
Golden Blade is not just a barber – it’s an experience and I am a big fan. It recently opened its fifth branch on Felpham Way (other branches in Bognor Regis, Selsey, Worthing and Pagham) and it caters for all ages and everyone is welcome. Given my 50+ years, I was reluctant to suggest a skin fade or eyebrow threading but instead requested a plain and simple haircut.
After receiving a warm welcome, a complimentary drink, battle commenced and within seconds I knew I was in expert hands. My basic request changed somewhat over the next 30 minutes or so and I was able to tick off the following; a hot steam shave (which left me feeling refreshed and rejuvenated), a facial mask (had to be done) and a surprisingly gentle ear and nose wax which involved the dual process of singeing and flaming!
Golden Blade caters for all ages from toddlers up to … you name it. The teenagers love it because they can request what they really want, and every customer is made to feel special. The basics for me was that the cut was excellent, the customer care was exemplary, and I left feeling a million dollars. I was even able to look my bushy-haired son in the eye and tell him his cool dad was back in town!
No need to book just walk-in. 101 Felpham Way, Bognor Regis, PO21 8QB.

SUSTAINABLE SHOPPPING
BY FELPHAM FASHION GURU VICKY BOOKER
The stigma of buying second-hand clothes has gone; we’re more mindful of the sustainability of our clothing choices these days. This, coupled with rising prices and more awareness of the true cost of ‘fast fashion’, means the pre-loved sector is where it’s at!
Luckily for us, we have three great pre-loved shops to choose from locally, a fabulous pop-up, and a plethora of charity shops all close by. Here’s my little insight into these local gems … First up, is Déjà Vu2. This friendly boutique has been a stalwart of Felpham village for years and is a great place to pick up a bargain. With a variety of labels from the high street like Zara, M&S, and Mint Velvet, through to designer and cult classics.
When I visited, they had this gorgeous suedette biker jacket from Karen Millen. Teamed with a pair of classic charcoal grey Levi 501s, you’ve got the ideal outfit for a fraction of the original price.
While I was there, I couldn’t resist having a browse for myself. I must have been in biker mode as I ended up buying this navy velvet version for just £9! Follow them on Facebook for more info www.facebook.com/DejaVu2felpham With two shops in Rustington and Arundel, as well as the option to buy items online, Willow & Eve is on my must-visit list. With an upscale boutique feel, this is as far away from the old stereotype of second-hand clothes as you can get. Yvette and Karen who run it, have a great eye and are selective about the items they’ll accept for sale.
Most items are less than four years old so there’s a modernity about the collections, and everything is either new or in great condition. My top pick are these old school (but very on-trend) Gola trainers, available (at time of writing) on their website for just £48 – these are £85 new. Check out willowandeve.com for more info.
And finally, there is a fabulous pre-loved popup shop in Earnley that you may not have come across before. It’s called Re:dress and is run by the lovely Sophie and Leila a few times a year. I’ve found many a fashion gem at these sales over the last couple of years, so it’s worth a visit. The next pop-up event is on 10 to 12 May, and they are accepting clothes for sale on set dates over the next few weeks – check out their Instagram for more info – @redress_chi
If you’re having a wardrobe clear out, I recommend taking your items to one of these great venues. All give you 50 per cent back on what they sell, so you can profit without having to do anything other than drop your items off! Selling sites like Vinted and e-bay are great if you’re happy to put in the work, but if you want to save yourself the hassle then give one of these a try.
If you’d like some inspiration on what to buy for the Spring/Summer, make sure to book a place on one of my Style Updates in March – find the details on my site Vickybooker.com or contact me for info – vicky@vickybooker.com. This would make a great gift idea for Mother’s Day too – see you there!

WORTHING HERITAGE TRAILS
BY SIMON BAKER IRONS
More and more towns and villages are creating heritage trails, which are usually fully accessible and enable us to have a great walk as well as learning about the history of the area. The Worthing Heritage Alliance has created over twelve trails in and around Worthing and all can be downloaded from their website. I chose to take a short walk around the lesser known but very historical area of Tarring.
1. The trail starts at the thirteenth century St Andrews Church, which has had a strange and varied history. One such unusual activity that was popular in the sixteenth century was the ‘Church Ales’, these were drinking sessions held in the church and would see the churchwardens sell beer to raise funds for its upkeep. Take a look inside the church at the marble mosaics, constructed in 1885, they are based on similar mosaics seen in the Basilica at Ravenna. In the cemetery can be found the grave of John Parsons, the oldest surviving tomb in Worthing, he was buried in 1633.
2. Turn right out of the lychgate and into Church Road, pass Cranborne Villa; that in the late nineteenth century was a sweet factory and very popular with local children.
3. Turn left into the High Street, the most historic street in Worthing, with buildings dating back to the late medieval period. The George and Dragon on the corner is likely to be the oldest continuously operating public house in Worthing. Look out for the sign, which used to swing loose and is now welded into an upright position. The sign was changed in 1927 because double-decker buses kept hitting the sign when they mounted the pavement to avoid other traffic. The buses are now re-routed; however, the sign remains in its upright position.
4. The trail proceeds north along the High Street and features more notable houses. It is very fortunate that these buildings have survived. In May 1801 a terrible fire engulfed Tarring village, nine cottages and three large barns were destroyed. In the 1920s Worthing Town Council proposed demolishing one side of the street so that the road could be widened.
5. At the end of the High Street, you’ll need to retrace your steps back to Church Road. Just as it turns into Glebe Road, you’ll see The Old Palace. This is one of the only two Grade I listed buildings in Worthing, the other is Castle Goring.
6. Head down South Street and look out for Bishops Garth. The grounds to this house were home to the ancient Fig Gardens, they were very popular with Victorian tourists, who visited to drink tea and eat a bowl of figs. A lot of the trees were felled to build houses, however the surviving trees can be visited as the gardens open for one day each year.
7. Continue down South Street and into Westland Avenue and you’ll be able to see the Tarring Folly.
8. Retrace your steps once again to the church to complete this historical trail. To see more photos and walks please follow me on Instagram @piertopiertrekking

ARTIST OF THE MONTH: DONNA CHAPMAN
I am a New Zealander and have lived in Felpham for 20 years. From about age 10, I remember sitting outside and drawing my surroundings. There was so much beauty around me, Mt Grey in the distance, the wildlife, or farm stock. The neighbours had an old colonial style house with a wraparound veranda, and I loved to draw this. Until I was in my twenties, drawing and painting was purely a pleasurable way to spend time. This changed when I returned home from my first overseas experience, I was visiting our neighbours living in the colonial house when I clocked one of my drawings framed above their fireplace, it turns out my mother had saved my sketches and given one to them. I was quite happily surprised.
My painting process almost always begins by playing with the medium, sometimes its oil or pastels. Lately it has been pouring acrylics. It is an incredibly messy and random process where you never actually know what is going to happen. I will then use this as a background for a painting.
I teach a class for beginners and people returning to painting and drawing. Generally, this is with acrylics however, we do try other mediums such as charcoal, alcohol inks, paint pouring, and pastels. These sessions are two-fold, we begin by playing with the medium to see what it can do, then in the second part we learn basic drawing or painting skills.

DIPPING YOUR TOE IN! BY PETER LONG
With all the buzz around how good cold water is for your body and living so close to the beach I thought I’d give some winter sea dipping a try. I’d seen the Bognor Bluetits page on Facebook, a group of people who regularly meet to do just that. The cold water can be dangerous so if you want to try give it a try, joining a group is the safest way to go. I met up with the dippers at the Felpham boat ramp, they have sessions all along the coast, this one worked best for me. The ladies I found there were lovely! Very accommodating, they welcomed me warmly - which was ideal as it was really cold!
After a few introductions Jan and a couple of the others ran me through some first timer advice; go in slowly, splash the water over your arms and chest and most importantly get dressed fast into multiple layers and drink the hot drink I’d brought with me.
Everyone started getting ready to go and it was then that I noticed how much gear everyone had. Those fancy towel robe coats, goggles, swimming caps, gloves and shoes. It might not sound like a lot but it was enough to make me even more anxious than I already was. I did have wetsuit shoes, something I was very grateful for later on.
As we waded out in the water I got as far as my knees and wondered if I was making a terrible mistake. Some of the others were already in the bigger waves, the surf going over their heads as they laughed and whooped giving me a confidence boost to push myself further so I could have some of that fun too. I made it past my waist, splashing the cold water on my arms and chest like Jan had told me to and in no time at all I was up to my chest, the waves splashing my face and I felt great. Like I’d conquered something monumental. The group were shouting well done, and giving me ear to ear grins and a thumbs up, we were together in something unique, all knowing what the other had had to go through to get this far.
Within a few moments I started to feel pins and needles from my elbows to my hands. The tingly feeling soon turned to a stinging pain and I decided my dip was over. I started to make my way back to the shore accompanied by more cheers and shouts of well done. The feeling in my arms went away almost immediately and I briefly thought of going back in.
Just like the group had told me to I dried quickly and got my layers on feeling so alive, in a small cocoon of ecstasy that drove the cold away while I sipped my thermos coffee. I wanted to stay and chat but I finally started to feel cold so I said my goodbyes, made my way to my car and the promise of a warm shower. The whole drive home I couldn’t stop thinking about my dip and started planning the next one in my head. I was hooked.
Thanks to the Felpham Dippers and the Bognor Bluetits for an amazing experience and I’ll see you at the next one!

THE FUTURE OF OUR RIFES AND BROOKLANDS
FLANSHAM FARMER, NICK ADAMES SHARES HIS FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE
As we start a new year many farmers and owners of low land are faced with the dilemma of what to do with their land because, although historically good agricultural land, in the past 27 years large areas have become flood plain during much of the year. This means the land is now unsuitable for growing cereal crops as in past, or even reliable for summering cattle, even in drier summers.
Yet we farmers are told that we are responsible for keeping our ditches clear and flowing. But where are they supposed to flow to when the rifes/rivers they flow into are not maintained, and the water cannot get away? Without the old drainage systems working as they were designed to, the land is now unusable for farming or even leisure purposes.
There is also the question of who is responsible for the river banks and the trees that grow or grew on them? Many hawthorns locally have very recently been poisoned by standing in sewage-filled ditches, are dead or dying and need removing, but they are growing on the banks of the waterways! If owners remove them from the ditches they would likely face prosecution by the Environment Agency whose abysmal negligence, in my view, has caused the problem. But, if nothing continues to be done, the dead trees will fall and block the waterways even more?
If we farmers were to attempt to clear the local Rifes, we would face the type of penalties suffered last year by Mr John Price in Oxfordshire, who cleared a blocked overgrown section of river, and was then fined some £600,000 and given a year in prison. Fined for doing the work done in the past by the old Internal Drainage Boards (IDB) but since the mid-1990s the responsibility of the Environment Agency (EA), and wholly neglected by them ever since.
The subsequent flooding seriously affects farmland, golf courses and housing, both locally and nationwide. One effect locally being that the routine, but unwelcome sewage discharges, from Southern Water’s Lidsey Treatment Works are unable to quickly reach the sea outfall at Felpham, and are forced back upstream. The discharge point at Felpham is neither maintained or uses the emergency pumping installed to handle what flow there is. What is installed has not been used and towns and villages flood as a result. Blaming ‘environmental protection’ is unacceptable.
I believe this is entirely the responsibility of the EA. The Rifes need dredging and maintaining (which us farmers have offered to do at our cost), the lower reach of the Aldingbourne Rife from Felpham bypass to the sea, enclosed by car parks and housing, needs thoroughly dredging by the EA, and the outfall gates at the seawall needs to be maintained so they do their job at low tide. It’s all pretty basic, and in my opinion, the EA needs either scrapping or made to do its work, or this whole area will soon be a permanent flood plain. Is this what residents really want?

A GOOD READ
BY NATASHA DONOVAN
Bitter by Francesca Jakobi
Bitter is Francesca Jakobi’s astonishing first novel. It is a captivating exploration of complex family dynamics, narrated with a poignant blend of humour and melancholy. The novel unfolds through the eyes of Gilda, a twice-divorced, middle-aged woman grappling with the recent marriage of her only child, Reuben. While Gilda is depicted as an overbearing Jewish mother, the portrayal is never cliched, but rather deeply nuanced, blending past and present to create a relatable and poignant character.
Jakobi’s short chapters drives the narrative forward at a compelling pace. The book’s heart lies in its exploration of Gilda’s troubled relationship with her son and her escalating jealousy towards his new wife. This personal drama is skilfully balanced with moments of dry humour, often through Gilda’s humorous reflections, a testament to Jakobi’s ability to weave lightness into the fabric of a fundamentally sombre story.
The novel’s title, ‘Bitter,’ is a play on the German word for ‘please.’ The novel delves into Gilda’s backstory, as a displaced and isolated German girl attending an English boarding school during the 1930s.
While Bitter flirts with the conventions of a psychological thriller, with Gilda’s near-obsessive behaviour towards her daughter-in-law, creating moments of intense suspense, at its core is a story of love, kindness, and lasting friendship. Jakobi unsettles us at the same time as making us laugh out loud at Gilda’s exploits, but her real skill is in making us somehow love this out-of-control Jewish mother and in doing so, encouraging against our better judgment to side with Gilda!
A thoroughly engaging read.
Hey Grandude! by Paul McCartney and illustrated by Kathryn Durst. This is a delightful and imaginative children’s book by singer songwriter Paul McCartney, which takes young readers on an enchanting adventure alongside a charming and unconventional grandfather, presumably not unlike Mr. McCartney himself!
The book’s title is a playful nod to McCartney’s Beatles fame, and sets the tone for a whimsical tale.
Grandude, is a cool, intrepid explorer with a magical compass, inviting his four grandchildren – or “Chillers” as he affectionately calls them – on extraordinary journeys. The narrative is simple and ideal for young children, making for a fun bedtime story. McCartney’s storytelling is full of joy and wonder, making it evident that it’s penned by a grandfather who enjoyed entertaining his own grandchildren.
Kathryn Durst’s vibrant and detailed artwork brings the story to life adding layers of visual delight and energy to capture the excitement and magic of Grandude’s adventures, from stormy seas to sandy deserts. The synergy between McCartney’s charming narrative and Durst’s lively illustrations makes for an engaging read.
Grandude is a story that celebrates the beautiful bond between grandparents and grandchildren, encouraging both generations to embark of adventures and explore the wonders the world has to offer.

FERTILISER: THE FACTS BY RACHEL LEVERTON
This month the days get longer, and the sun gets stronger … we hope! However, March is famously temperamental and if the soil where you are is still wet and cold then it’s wise to delay planting and sowing until the temperature rises.
Plant nutrient reserves are low at this time of year so, as the soil warms up, it’s time to think about fertiliser. Many gardeners are a bit frightened of fertiliser. All those chemical symbols on the side of the packet are rather reminiscent of school chemistry lessons. In fact, the basics are quite simple.
NPK – This can be observed on the side of most fertiliser packages. The letters stand for:
N - Nitrogen
P - Phosphorous
K - Potassium
Together these are known as the macro-nutrients and each of them has its own use.
• Nitrogen primarily feeds the leafy above-the-ground parts of the plants.
• Phosphorous promotes strong roots.
• Potassium makes grass hardier, promotes germination and improves vegetable and fruit yields.
The proportions of each macro-nutrient will be printed on the packet. Equal amounts of each nutrient make for a good general-purpose fertiliser.
A lawn will need a good balance of nitrogen and phosphorus to guarantee lush green grass with a healthy root system capable of withstanding dry spells. Fruiting plants need higher proportions of potassium.
There are other macro-nutrients: Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen, which plants obtain freely from the air and water; and calcium, magnesium, and sulphur, which should be present in any good general-purpose fertiliser.
Plants also need micro-nutrients: Iron, Manganese, Zinc, Boron, and Molybdenum. Plants take all these nutrients and build everything they need from scratch, including vitamins. What plants cannot do is absorb vitamins directly from things such as pet food, milk or so-called fertilisers which contain vitamins, proteins, and fats. So don’t be intimidated by fertiliser. Decide what your plants need then read the label. It’s easy as ABC … or rather NPK.
Caution:
• Don’t over-do it! It’s best to feed little and often.
• Don’t fertilise in direct sun or the leaves may scorch.
• Wait until the soil has warmed.
• Keep out of reach of children!

SPRING CLEAN
BY SARAH DAVEY
A GUIDE TO EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE CLEANING
Spring cleaning is an annual ritual that not only signifies the end of winter but also heralds a fresh, clean start for your home. While the task may seem daunting, with the right approach, it can be both efficient and enjoyable.
Planning: The most effective spring cleaning begins with a plan. Before diving in, make a list of all the areas in your home that need attention. This list should be comprehensive, covering everything from the attic to the basement, including often-neglected spaces like the tops of cabinets and under the beds. Break down the tasks into manageable sections and assign them to specific days. This approach ensures that the work is spread out, making it less overwhelming.
Decluttering: A crucial step in spring cleaning is simplifying your space. A cluttered home complicates cleaning and adds to your stress. Start by sorting through your belongings and categorize them into items to keep, donate, or discard. A good rule of thumb is to get rid of anything you haven’t used in the past year. This process not only clears physical space but also creates a more peaceful and enjoyable living environment.
Deep Cleaning: Spring cleaning is the time to engage in deep cleaning – tasks that go beyond your regular cleaning routine. This includes washing windows, cleaning carpets, and dusting hard-to-reach areas. Consider moving furniture to clean the areas beneath and behind them. These tasks require more time and effort but are essential for maintaining a healthy living environment.
Organizing: After cleaning and decluttering, focus on organizing your space. Use storage solutions like shelves, boxes, and baskets to keep your belongings orderly. Proper organization not only enhances the appearance of your home but also makes it easier to maintain cleanliness.
Eco-Friendly Cleaning: Protect your health and the environment by incorporating eco-friendly cleaning products into your routine. Natural alternatives like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice are effective, safe, and environmentally friendly. These solutions not only clean effectively but also reduce the levels of toxic substances in your home.
Be systematic: A methodical approach ensures that no area is overlooked. Start in one room and don’t move to the next until you have completed all the tasks on your list for that space. This approach provides a sense of accomplishment and keeps you motivated too.
Maintenance: Post-spring cleaning, it’s important to maintain the cleanliness and organization of your home. Develop a regular cleaning schedule and stick to it. Regular maintenance will make spring cleaning next year much easier by preventing the accumulation of dirt and clutter.
Embrace the Benefits: Spring cleaning is more than a seasonal chore; it’s an opportunity to refresh and rejuvenate your living space, creating a more pleasant and healthy environment for you and your family.

BREAKING THE HABIT BY LOUISE ADDISON
THREE EFFECTIVE WAYS TO STOP SMOKING
March 13th is National No Smoking Day, which promotes a healthier, smoke-free lifestyle. Quitting smoking is a significant challenge, but with the right tools and support, it’s entirely achievable. Here, we explore three effective methods.
NHS Stop Smoking Services – These services provide access to trained advisors who can offer tailored advice and support. Studies have shown that individuals who use these services are three times more likely to quit successfully compared to those who try to go it alone. The services can include face-to-face meetings, group support, and access to other quitting aids, such as nicotine replacement. The personalized approach and professional guidance significantly enhance the chances of a successful quit.
Hypnotism - Hypnotism is a popular method to help people stop smoking. It involves using hypnotherapy to alter the smoker’s mindset towards cigarettes, and addresses the psychological aspect of addiction. Many people have found success with this method, as it helps to tackle deep-rooted habits and mental associations linked to smoking.
Hypnotherapy sessions can be done individually or in groups and are often used in conjunction with other quitting strategies.
Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) - NRT is a widely used method to help smokers quit. It involves replacing cigarettes with other nicotine sources, such as patches, gum, lozenges, inhalators, or nasal sprays. This approach helps to alleviate withdrawal symptoms by providing a controlled dose of nicotine without the harmful effects of tobacco smoke. Over time, the smoker gradually reduces the nicotine dosage, easing off their dependence. NRT is often more effective when combined with behavioural support, such as that offered by NHS Stop Smoking Services.
Quitting smoking requires the right approach and support. NHS Stop Smoking Services, hypnotism, and NRT, each offer unique benefits and can be combined and tailored to suit individual needs. It’s important to remember that different people may prefer different strategies. With determination and the right support, quitting smoking is within reach.

Estate Planning - FAQs
by Mark Riley, Founder & Managing Partner, MJR Solicitors
What is Inheritance Tax?
Inheritance Tax (IHT) is a tax charge (usually 40%) on any part of your estate that exceeds your personal allowance (also called the nil rate band). This is currently £325,000 per person. The charge drops to 36% if you give at least 10% of your estate away to charity when you die.
What is estate planning?
Estate planning involves planning how to pass on your assets to the next generation in the most effective way. A significant part of this will usually be minimising Inheritance Tax.
How much is the nil rate band?
The nil rate band is your personal allowance that is free from Inheritance Tax. It is currently £325,000 per person. Any unused allowance can be transferred between married couples and civil partners when one spouse dies.
What is the residence nil rate band?
The residence nil rate band is an allowance for passing on the family home. It is currently £175,000 and can be transferred between spouses and civil partners. The allowance is tapered down for people with larger estates, reducing by £1 for every £2 that the estate is valued at over £2 million. The residence nil rate band can only be used when passing on a residence to direct descendants and applies only to your home, not a buy-to-let property.
What is a potentially exempt transfer?
Gifts that are not immediately tax-free are considered potentially exempt. If you die within seven years of making a potentially exempt gift, it counts as part of your estate and may be subject to Inheritance Tax.
What is taper relief?
If you made a potentially exempt gift that was bigger than the nil rate band, you could
benefit from taper relief (also known as the seven year rule). This gradually reduces the amount of Inheritance Tax that is chargeable over the seven years after you made the gift.
What are the tax rules and allowances for making gifts?
• The annual gifting allowance is £3,000
• You can make as many small gifts of £250 as you want, but one person can receive no more than £250
• Regular gifts from excess income are taxfree, as long as they won’t affect your normal lifestyle
• Gifts to charities, museums, universities, sports clubs and some political parties are tax-free

We hear the terms ‘equinox’ and ‘solstice’ bandied about, but what do they actually mean?
These terms both relate to the Earth’s orbit around the sun and its axial tilt, but they refer to different phenomena and occur at different times of the year.
Equinox: This occurs when the sun is exactly above the Equator, causing day and night to be of approximately equal length. This happens twice a year, around March 20-21 (the vernal or spring equinox) and September 22-23 (the autumnal or fall equinox). These dates can vary slightly each year.
During an equinox, the Earth’s axis is not tilted towards or away from the sun. As a result, both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres experience roughly equal amounts of daylight and darkness. Equinoxes are often associated with the transition of seasons: the vernal equinox marks the beginning of spring, and the autumnal equinox signifies the start of fall in the respective hemispheres.
Solstice: This occurs when the sun reaches its highest or lowest point in the sky at noon, marked by the longest and shortest days. It happens twice a year, around June 20-21 (the summer solstice) and December 21-22 (the winter solstice).
During a solstice, the Earth’s axis is tilted maximally toward (summer solstice) or away (winter solstice) from the sun. This results in the longest day of the year during the summer solstice and the shortest day of the year during the winter solstice in the respective hemispheres.
Solstices are significant in many cultures and are often associated with festivals and rituals. The summer solstice is typically seen as the start of summer, while the winter solstice is commonly considered the beginning of winter.

TAME THE TECH!
BY TOM HANCOCK
HOW TO DECLUTTER AND ORGANISE YOUR ELECTRONICS
Keeping up with the latest gadgets can result in cable clutter and drawers full of unused devices. Use our simple guide to help you tidy up your tech, categorize your cables, and purge outdated gadgets.
Every home has one … a box or drawer full of random cables. Many of us are so terrified of throwing out any cable that we even transport this tangled mess with us when we move house! It’s time to accept that you’ll probably never use your old Nokia charger or the cable from a longgone printer.
First consolidate. Organize your cables by type. This allows you to see how many of each you have. Keep three or four of each maximum. Neatly coil them and secure with cable ties or rubber bands. Use labelled containers for easy identification and storage – anything from takeout containers to Ziploc bags will work. There will be at least two or three unidentifiable cables so apply the rule: if you don’t know what it is, discard it. Label the remaining ones for easy identification later.
Gadgets often come with boxes containing accessories and manuals. If space allows, keep these original boxes as they increase the gadget’s resale value and make life easier for the next owner. If you are tight for space, store contents in smaller labelled containers. Photograph the box and any important codes for easy reference later.
Before discarding any gadget back up any important data and wipe the device. This means both deleting data and cleaning the gadget. Factory reset the device and remove it from associated apps. This step not only protects your privacy but also simplifies future handovers.
Organize stored gadgets by category and store them in designated zones, preferably with their original boxes and accessories. This organisation makes it easier to locate specific devices when needed.
Periodically search for gadgets to purge, checking under TVs, in nightstands, and kitchen cupboards. Decluttering frees up space and makes it easier to access frequently used items. Identify gadgets and accessories you no longer use and sell, donate, or dispose of them responsibly. Remember, gadgets depreciate over time, so it’s best to pass them on while they still hold some value.
By following these steps, you can organize your technology, manage cables, and get rid of unnecessary gadgets. This process not only declutters your space but also ensures that your tech collection remains up-to-date and manageable. Responsible disposal of electronics is also key, as many devices can be sold, refurbished, or donated, extending their life and usefulness.

GEMMA GUINEY
HOW TO … MANAGE A SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE REVIEW
If you manage a team of people, you’ll know that critical to your success is how well they perform. High performing teams equal high performing businesses.
If we want high performance to continue, we need to tell our teams what is working well and what needs to continue or conversely what isn’t working and what needs to happen to correct this.
However, it is no surprise to us that performance reviews so often get missed. When we talk to leaders to understand why there is ALWAYS a common response ‘I just don’t have the time’.
At the HR House we think you can do this in a way that’s simple and doesn’t take a lot of time. Follow our five steps below to see how –
1. It starts with setting Goals/Targets – For every new starter, and then at regular intervals after their arrival goals or tasks must be set to tell your employee: 1. What it is you want them to do. 2. How they’ll be measured. 3. How you expect them to go about achieving it. 4. When they need to have achieved this by.
2. The Self Appraisal – Asking your employee to self-appraise before they get to a review meeting with you saves time for all. Ask them to come prepared to answer the following three ‘Employee Questions’:
1. GOALS: Am I on track to achieve/or have achieved my goals? If achieved how? If not, why not? 2. DEVELOPMENT: What development/additional training do I need/want? 3. SUPPORT: What support do I need from the business to help me be successful?
3. Keep it simple and if need be – Forget the paperwork (!) If you don’t have a performance review process and templates already in place – it’s ok. BUT it’s NEVER a reason not to do it. Providing feedback to your employee on how well they’re performing should be something you already know the answer to, and you don’t need a complex and time-consuming process to get there. A summary of your review can be written up as a word document or even an email – just as long as you have something to refer to for future reference.
4. Use real examples to support your feedback – As their employer/leader there are three ‘Manager Questions’ that you need to know the answers to before you discuss with your employee: 1. GOALS: Did they achieve their goals/targets? Discuss the tangible results. 2. OBSERVATIONS: If the goals were achieved, what did you see them doing? If not, why not? What have you seen, heard and when? 3. DEVELOPMENT/NEXT STEPS: What needs to happen next? Consider – development, another goal, training, additional responsibilities, coaching or performance management.
5. Keep it going! This process should be continuous. Most high performers in our experience LOVE the opportunity to talk about how they’re doing and relish the time to hear what their leader thinks of them too. Regular reviews and honest feedback WILL positively transform the way your teams and business perform.

FLEAS AND FEARFUL ROCKS BY KIM
LESLIE
When Jane Austen’s Dashwood family moved their Sussex home to Devon in the early 19th century at the beginning of Sense and Sensibility, their furniture, household linen, plate, china and books were all piled into a boat for the seaward journey to Exeter. The roads were appalling: muddy, rutted and dangerous.
A century before, Daniel Defoe found that millers around Chichester Harbour were sending their flour to London by water rather than road, by what the locals called the ‘Long Sea’ route; miles longer than the direct overland route, but so much more reliable and safer. And a century before that, yet another traveller around the Sussex coast was John Taylor, famed as ‘The Water Poet’.
With four companions, Taylor rowed from London to Salisbury in 1623 via the Thames and the Channel coast and then up the Avon into Wiltshire’s cathedral city, penning their watery adventures in verse. Westwards they rowed: Goring, Rustington, Littlehampton, Middleton, Bognor and Selsey all within their sights.
Taylor well knew the perils of the water. Pressganged into the Elizabethan navy at an early age, he later found safer employment as a Thames waterman. A compulsive scribbler, his gift was in churning out prose and doggerel verse on every imaginable subject. Acres of print poured from his pen: histories, battles, murders, politics, card games, in praise of hemp, the habits of gluttons, London alehouses, even ‘a comparison betwixt a whore and a booke’. He had an opinion on everything.
Adventures in mind, Taylor and his companions left London on 28 July arriving in Salisbury on 15 August, a goodly speed considering the weather and all the impediments on the river Avon. Along the Sussex coast they rowed through seas ‘outragious and extreamely rough’, coming ashore at Goring for rest, for food and lodgings. Disaster struck: ‘To bed we went in hope of rest and ease, / But all beleaguer’d with an host of fleas: / Who in their furie nip’d and skip’d so hotly, / That all our skins were almost turn’d to motly.’ Worse was to come. Goring’s parish constable, fearing they were pirates or political refugees, arrested them, having ‘stolne our oares away’, hiding them ‘Within a field well fill’d with barly graine’. Finding their oares with the help of a ‘plowman’ they somehow escaped the clutches of the law, no doubt mightily relieved. On leaving London a little earlier, they’d seen where pirates were hanged at the low water mark at Wapping, their bodies left for three tides to flow over them.
Escaping Goring’s parish constable, ‘Then madly gladly out to sea we thrust, / Gainst windes and stormes, and many a churlish gust:’/ then passed ‘Bognor’s fearefull rockes, which hidden lie / Two miles into the sea, some wet, some drie, / There we suppos’d our danger most of all, / If we on those remorcelesse rockes should fall, / But by th’ Almightie’s mercy, and his might, / We row’d to Selsey, where we stay’d all night.’ Safe at last beyond Bognor’s notorious rocks, they crossed ‘Chichester’s faire haven’s mouth’ into Hampshire, still toiling against the ceaseless wind that ‘blow’d, and rag’d’ as they sought the refuge of Portsmouth Harbour, free at last from all the perils of Sussex: fleas, the law and Bognor’s fearsome rocks.

The Race Village is located in West Park next to the Start/Finish line on Silverston Avenue. The course runs along the Promenade, past Butlins, through Felpham village, along Limmer Lane before turning back onto the Prom for the final leg. Finishers will receive a medal and a rewards leaflet full of great offers from local businesses.
It is well known as a course for those wishing to achieve a personal best, with spectators lining the course in support making it a fantastic event for the Bognor Regis community. Places are selling fast for this popular race, so if you are interested sign up now before it’s too late!

HOME HELP
BY NICKIE PETTITT
My name is Nickie and I set up Gastons Home Help after my father sadly died from terminal cancer. He lived 40 miles away and it was a huge adjustment to take care of him. During the later stages of his illness it made me realise what was missing in the industry. He didn’t need a carer or personal care, but someone to visit each day to make sure he was still eating and drinking efficiently and raise any concerns to his relatives.
I set up Gastons to build a bridge for other families and their relatives to take the strain off and give them peace of mind. Each plan is tailored for individuals so their needs are met. Some of my clients have a 2-hour clean once a week, others I visit up to three times a day to give them a wakeup call, breakfast, put some washing on, change bedding, prep a lunch and an evening call to check in and make a light evening meal and give them a bit of companionship. These small check-ins have been invaluable in keeping people safe whilst keeping their independence at home.
I communicate regularly with relatives and respond to queries or concerns out of office hours. I know that sometimes just knowing relatives are ok gives peace of mind and it’s my duty to make sure that happens. I visit many clients in the Felpham area. The business is a domestic support-only service, with no personal care involved and it’s just me which means I build a great rapport with my clients. I hold a full enhanced DBS, Level 1 and 2 hygiene certificate and I undertake regular training courses. Everyone is offered a free pre-assessment visit to give a good evaluation of what is needed, to see if I can help and to introduce myself.

COUNTY LINES
Arun Neighbourhood Policing Team
You can contact your local team in the following ways:
• Call us: on 101 to report a crime or 999 if it’s an emergency
• Email us: arun@sussex.pnn.police.uk
County lines is the name given to drug dealing where organised crime groups (OCGs) use phone lines to move and supply drugs, usually from cities into smaller towns, villages and rural areas.
They exploit vulnerable people, including children, those who are lonely, isolated or suffering with addiction or mental health issues, by recruiting them to distribute the drugs – this is referred to as “drug running”. Criminals may also take over and use a vulnerable person’s home as their base of operations for dealing drugs. This is known as ‘cuckooing’. It’s common for OCGs to use a property for a short amount of time, moving to other addresses frequently to reduce the chances of being caught.
There are several signs to look out for which may indicate that someone is involved in county lines:
• Repeatedly going missing from school or home and being found in other areas
• Having money, new clothes or electronic devices with no explanation how they paid for them
• Receiving a high number of texts and / or phone calls, and being secretive about who they’re speaking to
• Decline in school or work performance
• Significant changes in their emotional or physical well-being.
If you’re concerned about drug related crime in your area or think someone may be a victim of drug exploitation, please contact us online or on 101.

Congratulations to Alan Silvester of Ford who is the winner of our Sussex Christmas Quiz 2023 published in last month’s In Focus magazines.
Our esteemed In Focus writer and Sussex author and historian, Kim Leslie, visited Alan at his home in January to give him his prize, a copy of Kim’s excellent book Sussex Tales of the Unexpected: Five Centuries of County Life.
Thank you to everyone who sent in their answers, we had an amazing response. And for those of you who did the quiz at home – the correct answers are above.
Thank you to Kim for putting together the quiz questions which were not easy! Here’s looking forward to the Sussex Christmas Quiz 2024!
