FELPHAM IN FOCUS

Hello Everyone! You will have noticed I have put poppies on the front cover of the magazine this month to mark Armistice Day on 11 November and remember all the men and women who died in the First World War and in subsequent conflicts fighting for their country.

I always try and reflect at this time on my own life and whether I am making the most of it after all the sacrifices that people have made before me. Am I being the best that I can be, am I being as kind as I could be, am I finding the best in everyone and making the most of life? The answer to that question is always no, but quickly followed by, but I have really tried my best.

But I was tested lasted month. My laptop computer was stolen from my car. Foolish to leave it there I know and in my panic I sought the help of fellow residents on a local Facebook site and asked if anyone had heard or seen any car break-ins. Some answers were very helpful, but most were very insulting suggesting I was stupid and needed medical help. I had been trolled.

I responded politely but found that hard, I wanted to shout and scream at these people who insult others online and take no responsibility for the pain they may cause. I’m fine, but how would they have felt if I had been mentally ill and their cruel comments had driven me to jump off a bridge?

I was angry and truly shocked but then my faith in humanity returned. Lots of people sent messages of support, the insulting comments were taken down and I was offered lots of helpful advice and kind words.

The trolls are the minority and thankfully thousands of servicemen and women did not die in vain for a selfish and unkind nation. Most people are kind and generous, most people want to help and most people have your back. So that will be my reflection on 11 November.

LEST NOT FORGET BY KIM LESLIE The guns fell silent at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month – the year 1918 ending, so far, one of the deadliest conflicts in human history with upwards of some forty million casualties. This was the war to end all wars – the Great War. But not so.

Within twenty-one years global conflict engulfed the world yet again with at least seventy-five million casualties worldwide by 1945. And yet again the toll has continued with the Falklands, Iraq, Afghanistan …

And so we come together this November 2021 to remember the fallen from all these conflicts. As a nation we have not forgotten. Go to any war memorial on Armistice Day and Armistice (Remembrance) Sunday as the nation falls in silence.

The typical British war memorial centres around a simple churchyard cross, or one perhaps prominent on the village green atop the sad roll of honour, listing those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Locally we have one outstandingly unusual memorial. At Eastergate a sculpted lion sits proudly – certainly defiantly – on his limestone catafalque on what was once the village green, now rather precariously a form of roundabout on the busy A29. Below its paws a carved wreath surrounds a ‘FOR VALOUR’ inscription cut in Art Nouveau style looking down ‘IN GLORIOUS MEMORY’ on the names of the fallen from both world wars. Its magnificent curly tail facing Barnham, more an elephant’s trunk, is a wondrous sight.

So many moving letters and poems have memorialised the pain of warfare. Think Edmund Blunden, Rupert Brooke, and add John Stanley Purvis (writing as Philip Johnson), a young army officer who loved our downland landscapes, and one so dear to him crowned by its ring of trees – Chanctonbury Ring, surely one of the iconic symbols of Sussex. Half-an-hour before going over the top to face the guns of the Somme he turned his thoughts to home: I can’t forget the lane that goes from Steyning to the Ring In summer time, and on the downs how larks and linnets sing High in the sun. The wind comes off the sea, and, oh, the air!

I never knew till now that life in old days was so fair.

But now I know it in this filthy rat-infested ditch, Where every shell must kill or spare, and God alone knows which.

And I am made a beast of prey, and this trench is my lair.

My God, I never knew till now that those days were so fair.

And we assault in half-an-hour, and it’s a silly thing: I can’t forget the lane that goes from Steyning to the Ring.

He was fighting for freedom, for the love of his country, thinking of home far away from the horrors of warfare, the homeland he might never see again. That we can still enjoy life today against such a magnificent backdrop owes much to the fallen of all these terrible conflicts. One day take a pilgrimage to Steyning in the footsteps of Lieutenant Purvis. Turn down Mouse Lane towards Wiston and Chanctonbury and rejoice that men like him went over the top that we might live in peace and security in such wonderful surroundings that we too call home.

LOCAL HISTORY BY SYLVIA ENDACOTT This early 1960s view of the Royal Parade shows the shops of the Newtown Estate. They can be seen at North Bersted on the left as you travel to Chichester on the A259 from Bognor Regis.

The foreground is Chichester Road and bearing left is Central Avenue, one of the roads which formed the Newtown Estate, others included, Bedford Ave., Southway, Central Drive, Newtown Ave. and Greencourt Drive. G.A. Neal & Sons built this estate between 1932 and 1938 and some of the houses can be seen beyond these shops on the left of Central Drive.

The Newtown Estate was prestigious at the time as is seen by these two facts, they built ten houses to one acre and each house had a road to the rear of their back gardens to enable tradesmen to reach the back of the house, without having to use the front gate. On the corner can be seen Sidcots café, which had originally been the Estate Office. The other shops were a mixture of those found in any parade of shops, including the grocer, butcher, bakers and newsagents.

Today the Café has been replaced by the Royal Fish shop and the original sign worked above the door in the 1930s has now revealed Royal Parade 1932. Although a percentage of the homes have undergone structural changes many can still be found little changed in the last 80 years.

During the 2nd WW some of the newly constructed homes, whilst not sold were used by service personnel associated with the Bognor Regis ALG (Advanced Landing Ground).

SNAP, CRACKLE AND POP HOST THE PERFECT BONFIRE NIGHT BASH BY KATE McCARTHY Pre Covid we hosted an annual bonfire party for friends. We’re not big on planning but we follow the four Fs – Friends, Flame, Food, Fireworks. Our little bonfire bash afforded our social group the opportunity to meet together informally to enjoy life’s simple things: food, warmth, companionship, and laughter, and we really missed it in 2020, so this year we’re planning to bring it back. If you fancy hosting your own get together I’ll share our ‘recipe for success’ here.

Let’s start with the bonfire. There is a ‘proper’ way to build a fire which affects how long it will last and the amount of heat it gives off.

It’s best to arrange kindling (e.g., twigs, cardboard, and small pieces of wood) in a sort of wigwam shape over a base of tinder (e.g., paper, wood shavings or fire lighters) and then add more bulky pieces of wood and logs which ignite more slowly but burn longer. Light the fire about 20-30 minutes before the party is due to start so that it is burning merrily when your guests arrive. Some people don’t like the idea of a Guy Fawkes, but if it appeals to you, you can hold a Guy Fawkes competition with prizes for the best or the funniest. Our garden is small, so we don’t have room for huge effigies, so we dress up our Halloween skeleton as Guy and he gets a seat of honour at our garden table…that’s probably weird but it’s our party so you don’t get to judge!

No gathering is complete without food. November weather is traditionally cold and damp, so home-made soup, served in old mugs is always welcome. Guests often want to contribute to the food table. We have no rules so this usually results in a completely random selection of goodies, though we always provide hot dogs with fried onions (is there anything on earth that can beat that smell?) and homemade parkin, mainly because parkin is easy, and I can make it when I remember. Like I said, we’re not big on planning.

Fireworks are a must of course. They are also expensive in large quantities so don’t be shy about asking your guests to bring along a banger or two. Even with a substantial financial outlay, your display is unlikely to be hugely impressive, but that is absolutely not the point of a homegrown bonfire night party. It’s amazing how much enjoyment can be gleaned from the humblest box of shop-bought rockets. Invest in lots of sparklers too. Everyone loves sparklers, even adults, so be sure to have a good supply at hand, with matches to light them with and a bucket of water to extinguish them. Always remember the firework code and stay safe at all times.

Other tips we have learned from (sometimes bitter) personal experience is to make sure that carpets are protected if people are going to be in and out of the house, especially if the ground outside is wet, and have a supply of torches on hand if your bonfire is located some distance from the back door (which to be honest it should be!)

For me, the key to hosting a successful bonfire party is similar to handling fireworks – set everything up, light the fuse, then step away and allow the magic to happen.

CURIOSITY CORNER

A series of little titbits, a bit of nostalgia, some local history and trivia Look at the dead-pan expression on his face, his crouched position and even his bare bottom.

What on earth is going on?

This little 19th-century Staffordshire china figure, possibly from the 1830s, is extraordinarily daring for the Victorian period when ladies – at least respectable ones – didn’t even dare show a leg. In sympathy, even piano legs were to be covered. Prudery and repression were powerful forces. An ornament with its trousers down was outrageous!

So what about Roger Giles? Roger was a Devonshire schoolmaster, but he was a little more than that, and rather proud of all his many accomplishments. His advertisement, an astonishingly rambling grammatical disaster for a schoolmaster – no good at spelling and ‘educated’ English – gushed about his many skills. If his written work was anything to go by, heaven help those who went to him for their surgery!

As if ‘Surgin, Parish Clark & Skulemaster, Groser & Hundertaker’ wasn’t sufficient, he went on to list the many facets to his busy life. Here are a few of them leading up to the final punchline: ... he drors teef without wateing a minit … applies laches [leeches] … kuts korn, bunyons … clips donkies …Young ladys and gentelmen larnes their grammur, and langeudge in the purtiest mannar ... also grate care taken off their morrels and spellin.

Also zarm [psalm] zinging, tayching the base vial, and oll other zorts of fancy work, squadrils, pokers, weazels, and all country dances tort at home and abroad at perfekshun … i has just beginned to sell all sorts of stachonary ware, cox, hens, vouls, pigs, and all other kinds of poultry … Blacin-brishes, herrins, coles, scrubbin-brishes, traykel and godley bukes and bibles, mise-traps … taters, sassages and other garden stuff, bakky … lamp oyle, tay kittles … bukkits, grindin stones … lolipops, ginger beer … hepsom [Epsom] salts … Old rags bort and zold here and nowhere else, newlayed heggs by me Roger Giles …

And so here is Devonshire’s jack-of-all-trades laying his very own freshly ‘newlayed heggs’. Roger Giles’ bizarre story caught the imagination of the Staffordshire potteries. Several different versions were made, some as pepper pots with his hat pierced with small holes. A good conversation piece for the dinner table? A rare curiosity indeed!

GODREVY TO HELLS MOUTH

At this moment in time many of us are taking holidays in the UK, so I thought I would share one of my favourite walks from a recent break that I had in Cornwall. This 8km (5mile) walk follows the exhilarating South West Coast Path passing through some of the country’s most dramatic landscape around the Godrevy Headland to the breathtaking Hells Mouth.

From Godrevy National Trust car park (grid ref: SW583423) the walk starts by joining a boardwalk that winds its way through the Towans (Cornish for sand dunes). The South West Coast Path is easy to follow along the edge of the cliffs and is well signposted. As you head out of the Towans, St Ives Bay opens up with fantastic views across to Carbis Bay, St Ives and the vast horizon of the Atlantic Ocean.

Keep to the South West Coast Path as it rises above Godrevy Cove to the headland where you can get some magnificent views of the Godrevy lighthouse, standing lonely on the reef known as ‘The Stones’, the lighthouse was built in 1859 after the 700-ton steamer SS Nile was wrecked upon the rocks. At 26m high and with a range of 19km (12 miles) the lighthouse was manned until 1934.

Along the route, particularly at Mutton Cove and Hells Mouth, many grey seals can be seen both swimming in the shallow sea and hauled out resting on the stony shore, if lucky, pups can be seen with their mothers too. It’s also worth keeping your eye further out to sea as dolphins and basking sharks are common visitors to these Cornish waters.

The South West Coast Path continues along the cliff tops to another headland called the Knavocks. Wild ponies are free to graze on the heathland of the Knavocks, the ponies are very hardy and are ideally suited to grazing these areas, whereby managing the important heathland habitats. Within the Knavocks are many paths allowing further exploration of this area, one of which leads to a trig point at a height of 76m, here you can just see over into Mount’s bay on the south coast, with glimpses of the top of St Michael’s Mount.

From the Knavocks head downhill to the dramatic rocky inlet at Hell’s Mouth, it is unclear exactly how this cove was named; however, an inaccessible beach sits at the bottom of this cove that is surrounded by cliffs that have an 88m (290ft) sheer drop to the sea.

This is another great place to watch seabirds swooping around the cliffs and seals hauled out below.

After taking in the views head to the Hells Mouth café across the road for a well-deserved cream tea, before completing the walk by retracing your steps back along the South West Coast Path to the car park.

FIT FOR PURPOSE BY ALAN DREW It is of paramount importance that the best footwear fit be obtained to achieve comfortable and efficient foot function. The correct fitting of footwear is a complex business even for healthy but differently sized/shaped feet. If there are foot problems such as disease, physiological factors affecting size and shape, traumatic damage or surgical alterations, the fitting problems are made more complex still. It is therefore advisable to seek help from a qualified and experienced footfitting specialist such as a lower limb orthotist or a podiatrist.

Every human being has an individual morphology (body type) that is composed of hard endo-skeletal elements (bones), the structure of which is made flexible by attached tendons and muscles.

There are 26 bones in each foot and each bone is a different size and shape. The way these 26 bones are arranged and aligned one to another by interface areas of bone (joint) allows the muscles and tendons to direct and control different areas of the foot structure—i.e., hindfootmidfoot-forefoot.

These different structural and functional areas of the foot enable the human body to interact with the ground; for example, to stand, walk, and run, making the foot a “dynamic adaptive device”.

The feet are the base of the body and therefore have an influence on the rest of the body in stance and in motion.

Just as there are different body types, there are different types of feet with different shapes and patterns of hind, mid and forefeet.

This variation of feet is so complex every person’s foot is different to a greater or lesser degree.

In other words, there will be variations of structure and function between our right and left feet. That is why when we are buying shoes, we should always fit the largest foot.

The situation is further complicated because feet change shape as we walk. The foot lengthens after heel strike through mid-stance and toe-off. The difference between the static non-weight bearing foot length and the dynamic, weight-bearing foot length may be 6mm or even more in some cases.

Other considerations of fit are the width, especially of the forefoot and the depth, particularly of the midfoot. The shape of the different mid and forefoot sections as well as the size and shape of individual toes may be of considerable significance.

If your footwear doesn’t fit properly it might cause serious problems in the future so take some advice and future proof your feet!

GARDEN VIEW PROTECT AND SURVIVE BY RACHEL LEVERTON No … not the 1970s public information campaign exhorting us to hide under a table in case of nuclear attack. This is far more useful. It’s my public information campaign about protecting tender perennials and taking cuttings to over winter so your plants survive and even multiply.

First the protection: to protect tender perennials such as Salvias and Pelargoniums, lift them and bring them into a greenhouse. If you have a heater, set it to the frost setting (around 5C). You can use bubble wrap to insulate the greenhouse for additional heat conservation. If you do this the heater will only need to kick in on extremely cold days and nights.

For tender bulbs and tubers such as dahlias, wait until the foliage has been blackened by the frost, then lift them and place in a box of sand in a dry, dark, frostfree location.

Plants like Agapanthus, which are generally happy to be left in the ground with a little protection, are best left undisturbed. Cover the top with a generous quantity of well-rotted compost or bark mulch. This can be removed from around the crown of the plant in spring and will help retain moisture throughout the spring growing season.

November is the start of the bare root planting season. Plant roses, hedging and trees, and it’s also a good time to move any of these plants which you think are in the wrong area of the garden.

They are more likely to survive this treatment if moved at this time of year.

So, what else can we do in November?

• Ideally your spring bulbs should already be planted but if you haven’t done it yet, just put some in this month. November is actually the perfect month to plant tulip bulbs because the less time they are in the ground the less likelihood of them developing a virus called tulip fire blight.

• Plant garlic cloves if you have an area with free draining soil.

• Dig over the vegetable plot, leaving clods to break down over winter.

• Rake the fallen leaves regularly from lawn areas because if you leave them they deprive the lawn of light.

• Bring in garden tools for the winter. Clean, sharpen, and oil them first.

At My Sisters’ House Women’s Centre our vision is that no woman within our community should experience abuse, poverty, mental health or other disadvantages without the support that will help them to live healthy lives and realise their full potential.

This year alone more than 700 women have come through our door seeking help, and we are seeing increasing levels of need, poverty and desperation.

Christmas is fast approaching, and it’s a time of great anxiety for many.

There is so much pressure to make it a special time, and when you are struggling just to get by day-to-day, that pressure can feel overwhelming.

That’s why we do our best to pull out all the stops at Christmas time.

Last year, thanks to amazing donations from our local community, we helped over 250 families with Christmas gifts, bags of toiletries, and foodbank vouchers.

This year we are hoping that once again we can come together to make it an incredible, emotional, joyful time for everyone.

Please help if you can, by making a donation – we would be grateful for any new, unwrapped gifts for children and teenagers, as well as chocolate selection boxes and small items for stocking fillers. We also need gift cards of all sorts, and some nice treats for women. BOGNOR BAND IS BACK FOR CHRISTMAS Hot on the heels of their success at the Bognor Regis Proms in the Park and the re-opening ceremony of the Seafront Bandstand last month, Bognor Regis Concert Band are happy to announce that their well-known Christmas Concert is back for the first time in two years.

This year they will be performing at the St Mary’s Centre, Grassmere Close, Felpham on Saturday 11th December 2021 at 2.30pm and they are looking forward to being back in Felpham. The event is called ‘An Afternoon of Christmas Music bound to fill you with Festive Spirit’ tickets will be available at the door. Adults £5 and children under-16 £3 and there is free parking.

Based in West Sussex, Bognor Regis Concert Band is Bognor’s very own concert band. The band performs regularly at the Bognor bandstands on the seafront and in Hotham Park, as well as various locations in the local area.

Since its formation, the band has grown in both size and reputation and today displays the combined musical talent of about thirty local musicians who include amateurs, semi-professional players, teachers and young students. They are a community band in every sense!

They rehearse at the Regis School of Music in Bognor Regis on Tuesday nights at 7.30pm and are happy to welcome any wind, brass or percussion players who want to play – please message them on their Facebook page if you are interested in joining them.

The first will be ‘A Calamity and a Triumph’. This presentation looks in some detail at the disastrous crash of Air France 447 into the Atlantic in June 2009, and particularly examines the skilful avoidance of a disaster, with the landing of US Airways 1549 on the Hudson River, New York, in January 2009.

The second presentation will be ‘Flying Boats’. With this Lorimer will look at the history and uses of Flying Boats, in particular the Sunderland and the Catalina. He will highlight the exotic routes, such as England to Australia in the 1930s, the first Mail flights and the crucial use of these aeroplanes in both World wars.

AirACES is an aviation talk society, providing its members with regular talks, given by experts in many different fields related to the world of aviation.

Just a 15-minute meandering cycle from the visitor centre at Pagham Harbour, is Medmerry reserve. Before you reach the pebble-strewn beach to ooh and ahh at the Isle of Wight, park your bike next to the Stilt Pools on the right before the seafront. Without stopping, the bird life at Stilt Pools may seem monotonous, but look closer and you will see a dizzying array of feathers and bills.

Geese draw your eye as they loom over the mallards, teals, coots and moorhens. Now that winter is setting in, the canada geese are joined by brent geese. The canada goose, confusingly, does not migrate but is here in Sussex all year round unlike the smaller, darker brent goose.

If you stay for long enough, the geese may bless you by flying over your head. Before you see them, you will hear their honks and smile, then the rustle of their wing feathers against the wind before they come Black-headed gull. into view in a perfect V-shape. If they like the look of the pools you will hear a whoooosh as several soft underbellies and webbed feet hit the water simultaneously, followed by an uproar of honks and squeaks as they get comfortable. Later, they may decide they have had enough of the pool, though you will never know why, nor how they decided this as a group.

The cormorants sit on the grassy islands, some with their grimreaper-like wings outstretched and some hunched over like dark standing stones against the winter wind. Seeing them like this makes it hard to imagine them as expert fishermen out at sea, where their Loch Ness monster-like necks surface every now and then for breath.

Black headed gulls sit atop the water like paper sailing boats, their wings folded like origami behind them into elegant white triangles.

Herring gulls are here too, less elegant but equally interesting to watch Cormorant. as they tap dance to attract worms beneath the grass.

Even songbirds call this their home, taking shelter in the thick gorse around the pools, giving themselves away with their tinkling songs. How comforting that just one area of the reserve is home to such a variety of birds.

The Stilt Pools are accessible by foot from the Easton Lane Car park, or by bike from the Pagham Harbour Visitor Centre on the B2145 between Chichester and Selsey – why not pop in!

This autumn and winter we have a selection of wader and wildfowl walks to help you get the best out of these evocative and moody seasons, whether simply soaking up atmosphere and enjoying the spectacle, or wanting to get to grips with identifying and learning about all these fabulous birds.

ROTARY CLUB THE ROTARY CLUB OF BOGNOR REGIS CHRISTMAS CONCERT IS CANCELLED FOR SENIOR CITIZENS It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce that our annual senior citizens get together at the Riverside Caravan Park has been cancelled. For many years our club has played host to over two hundred local senior citizens at the beginning of December. We know that for many this is the start of Christmas, but, we believe that due to the covid pandemic, we cannot take the risk.

After discussing the position with some of our local care and nursing homes we believe that packing this number of people into the concert hall could set back the local efforts to reduce the cases of covid. We hope to be back next year with our usual mixture of dance routines, humour and the singing of carols mixed in with the popular “hippopotamus song”.

By the time you read this our members and friends will hopefully be back in our local primary schools listening to pupils read to them on a one-to-one basis. Following the tremendous response that we got from the public, Mary Pavard, our member in charge of this group, held two well attended briefing meetings in September. You can still be involved in helping at your local school by emailing Mary at rotary.bognor@gmail.com or calling her on 01243 822740.

Our charity work continues with donations recently being made to help the Youth of Bognor organisation and to assist several families who have needed help as they move into local authority accommodation. THE GLORIOUS MADNESS OF THE BEAUJOLAIS RUN BY SARAH DAVEY At one minute past midnight on the third Sunday in November, villages and towns in a region in France release cases of wine for immediate delivery across the world.

“Le Beaujolais est arrivé!” This rousing call signals the introduction of the year’s new wine, the famous Beaujolais Nouveau. Originally, pitchers of the wine were taken straight from the producers’ barrels to the towns amid much fanfare and celebration. Then in 1972 an enterprising soul saw a fabulous marketing opportunity: a race to distribute the first bottles of the new vintage.

The Beaujolais Run involves teams competing to be the first to get the first case of Nouveau from Paris to London. It’s a 500mile race to south-eastern France to collect the first bottles of the new wine, and then 500 miles back again. Beaujolais is described by wine sellers as ‘…a light fruity red burgundy wine made from the Gamay grape.’ It’s described by almost everyone else as ‘awful’, and by French standards it’s pretty rubbish if we’re honest, so you’d have to be utterly bonkers to undertake a round trip of 1000 miles to get your hands on a bottle. Well, us Brits have elevated being bonkers to an artform. The more ridiculous or pointless the challenge, the more likely we are to bounce enthusiastically into action. And so it proved with the Beaujolais Run. In its early years the event was purely about speed. Any mode of transport could be used. The glorious madness peaked in the 1980s when the RAF touched down in Beaujeu with a Harrier Jump-Jet at midnight, picked up the wine and then landed 32 minutes later in London. At that point the organisers had to rethink the rules!

So now the mission is to get from southern England to Mâcon by covering the shortest distance.

The Beaujolais Run has become a treasure hunt through the French countryside, following a series of cryptic navigational clues through six checkpoints. Competitors must take a photograph of themselves at an obscure landmark at each checkpoint to prove they were there. You can use maps, sat-navs or even ask the locals! Handy Hint: Map readers tend to succeed over tech-users because some countryside back routes thwart the sat-navs.

The Beaujolais Run is a popular event in the amateur motor sport year, and anything goes vintage cars family saloons, motorcycles and even supercars. Dress code is fancy dress! There is a new theme every year and locals have learned to be quite blasé about being stopped and asked for directions by someone dressed as a gorilla, or a WWII German Officer, driving a Morris Minor! The entry fee is £1995 per car which includes the Eurotunnel fees, accommodation, and organised dinners and drinks events along the way. In addition, participants are required to raise a minimum of £1,250 per car for the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.

You need a minimum of two team members, a vehicle, an entry fee, and the intention to raise a lot of money via sponsorship. A sense of humour and a love of scavenger hunts, cryptic clues and / or escape rooms is advantageous.

The French say, ‘La vie est trop courte pour boire du mauvais vin’, which translates as Life is too short to drink poor wine, however it would appear that Brits will happily drive very long distances for it!

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir Ryland Grace wakes up on a spacecraft with no idea how or why he is there-or even who he is, and on top of this he has to work scientific miracles, from scratch using a Heath Robinson approach to staying alive.

If this sounds like the plot of The Martian there are indeed similarities. Grace, like Mark Whitney is a scientist’s scientist, self-deprecating, highly intelligent, and funny.

The book alternates between Grace-on-Earth and Grace -in-Space as the narrative flips between the present day on the Hail Mary, and the events that led to him waking up alone and with no memory at the beginning of the book. The best science fiction happens when the author has put in the background work, uses it to craft a world we believe in, then creates characters we care about. Andy Weir has achieved all that here, and maintains a slick, fast paced plot to boot.

There’s loads of real science for the geeks, interesting, well-developed characters, excitement, thrills, and a touching friendship between the central characters. During the final third of the book, the stakes are raised ever higher, and I found myself reading ever faster in suspense all the way to the final page.

Everyone Dies Famous in a Small Town by Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock This is a young adult novel with a difference. It’s a collection of interconnected short stories all set in the mid-1990s, in Alaska and small towns scattered across the American west. Each story centres around one or two disparate teen characters who each face the challenges and rewards of small-town life. Told through the ordinary events of their lives, we glimpse brief moments, like peeking through a window. We can see their inner struggles, how they deal with pain or boredom or survival, and how they find new paths and moments of healing.

There are hitchhikers, kids with a ‘reputation’, free spirits, and young people who have suffered loss. Woven through the stories are some common threads; we get an early warning of wildfire in one story which is at the centre of the plot of another. The aftermath of events in one story, pop up in later ones.

Each character’s life has a ‘butterfly effect’ on the lives of other characters, some big and some small, and most of the characters never know the threads that connect them, even though we as readers are treated to the bigger picture and have the pleasure of seeing where all these lives overlap.

In Everyone Dies Famous in a Small Town, Hitchcock takes us into the inner workings of young minds and hearts. A beautiful read for older teens.

HEART OF FELPHAM – COASTGUARDS

BY JOYCE PRITCHARD on behalf of felpham village conservation society The Coastguard Service came about mainly as a result of a reorganisation of other existing services used to combat the hugely profitable smuggling activities that went on in the early part of the 19th century. Since then, it has undergone many changes and is now responsible for ship and coastline safety.

Four unmounted coastguards were established in Felpham c.1295, as one of only three such places in the rape (Old English for district) in Sussex. Riding officers for Felpham were appointed from 1699, and in the 1810s and 20s a coastguard officer, two preventive officers and many boatmen, presumably stationed at Bognor, were recorded.

Felpham was still only a small farming community in 1870 so the addition of a coastguard station was very important to the development of the village. It was also a prominent feature of Felpham Beach. In 1861 the Admiralty bought a 12-acre field between Felpham village and the sea. This consisted of a detached officer’s house, a watch house and two rows of red and yellow brick cottages and a boathouse situated east of the modern Blake’s Road. In 1887, this became known as Bognor coastguard station after the closure of the coastguard station in Bognor. There were 46 inmates in all in 1871 but the station was closed in the early 1920s and soon afterwards three large houses were built between the rows of cottages, and a parade of shops in the garden of the officer’s house along Felpham Road.

Recently, Felpham Village Conservation Society was delighted to learn that Ernest Joyce was born in one of the 15 Coastguard Cottages in Admiralty Road, Felpham in 1875. He went on to become a highly decorated explorer, taking part in some of the world’s most notable Antarctic expeditions alongside Captain Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton. He was awarded the Albert Medal for his bravery during the Trans-Antarctic Expedition and the Polar Medal with 4 bars by the Royal Geographical Society – something only one other person has ever achieved.

The blue plaque memorial stone, which recognises Ernest Joyce’s bravery and pioneering spirit, has been placed in Fisherman’s Gardens, which is also part of the Old Coastguards historical area.

Amateur historian and parish councillor Kevin Watson uncovered the amazing life of Ernest Joyce after Felpham Community College students said they wanted to name their new activity playground after this historical person.

HEAR THIS BY LOUISE ADDISON TINNITUS IS A MODERN EPIDEMIC Tinnitus is the name given to the perception of persistent ringing, buzzing, hissing, or whistling sounds in the head or the ears without an external sound source. The word ‘tinnitus’ derives from the Latin for ‘ringing’. It can be intermittent or continuous; low, medium, or high pitched and can be a single noise or many. In can be heard in one or both ears, or may feel like it is in the head. For some people it’s a minor annoyance, but for others it can be debilitating.

It is not a disease or illness; it is a symptom generated within the auditory system which may be due to an underlying condition or may be idiopathic (a medical term which means ‘unknown cause’).

The British Tinnitus Association estimate that 1 in 8 people suffer from the condition. Tinnitus in older people is mostly a function of wear and tear, so as people live longer, the number of people with tinnitus will increase. But the rise in numbers over the past two decades is only partially explained this way. A study from Statistics Canada revealed that 80% of adults aged 19 to 29 reported using headphones or earbuds connected to audio devices in the past year, significantly more than adults aged 30 to 49 (53%) or 50 to 79 (28%), and those adults aged 19 to 29 had rates of tinnitus over one third higher than for older adults. This could further inflate the numbers.

If you suffer with tinnitus there are some strategies for managing the condition.

Correcting any hearing loss can help reduce the symptoms of Tinnitus. Seek a hearing test from an audiologist.

If your tinnitus is preventing you getting to sleep, it may be that the shift from a relatively noisy daytime environment to the quietness of the bedroom makes the tinnitus noises more noticeable.

Some people find having some low-level sound can help mask tinnitus.

POACHED PEARS PEARS ARE IN SEASON RIGHT NOW AND THIS IS SUCH A GREAT WAY TO SERVE THEM Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour + 5-10 minutes for the sauce Serves: 4 Ingredients 1 750ml bottle of soft, fruity red wine 125g granulated sugar 2 cloves 1 stick of cinnamon

Zest of half a lemon 1 vanilla pod, split (optional) 4 hard pears Creme de cassis

Method Preheat the oven to 180C/gas mark 4. Pour the wine into a saucepan with the sugar, spices and lemon zest and bring to the boil, stirring dissolve the sugar.

Meanwhile, peel the pears.

Leave the stalk intact but cut out the core at the base. Use a non-metallic ovenproof dish just wide enough to hold the pears in a single layer and lay them in there. Don’t use a large dish because when you pour the spiced wine over the top – the fruit should just be submerged.

Cover the dish and bake for about an hour, checking after 45 minutes. When the fruit is tender, but still holds its shape, lift it out of the liquid and set aside.

Then pour the liquid back into the saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce by about half until it becomes thick and syrupy, then taste and pour in the creme de cassis to taste.

Pour the sauce back on to the pears and serve warm or cool, with ice cream, cream, or custard.

RECYCLE THOSE UNWANTED ITEMS FOR 4SIGHT VISION SUPPORT! It is estimated that there are over 35,000 people living with sight loss or low vision in West Sussex. In a bid to help 4Sight Vision Support is sending out a call to encourage donations of recyclables and unwanted items to help raise money for its specialist services for blind and sight impaired adults and children across West Sussex. The charity has just announced additional ways to lend your support through recycling, while doing your bit for the environment too!

The recycling scheme includes small items like stamps from everyday post or stamp collections; old or foreign coins; ink cartridges (except laser toner cartridges); and mobile phones including old or broken ones. It also covers cheese packets which are generally not suitable for your household recycling bin and which would otherwise go to landfill – you can include the plastic pouch from blocks or grated cheese, the plastic wrapper from sliced cheese and even mini-cheese nets. But please remember to wash them first!

And if you want to recycle a larger item – 4Sight Vision Support would love to have your old car! It has the resources to turn old cars into cash via auction or scrap.

The winter months can be a very lonely time for some people, particularly elderly and vulnerable people. Many people spend the winter months in doors without any interaction from friends and family and this can make them very isolated. At this time of this year fraudsters will be very active trying to take advantage of this.

Please take the time to educate yourself on different types of fraud and how you can help look out for loved ones, friends and neighbours. To avoid becoming a victim of online crime you don’t need to be a computer expert. Developing a few good online habits drastically reduces your chances of becoming a victim of cyber-crime, makes you less vulnerable and lets you use the web safely.

Online fraud, also known as cyber-crime, covers all crimes that: • take place online • are committed using computers, or • are assisted by online technology How to reduce your chances of becoming a victim: • when setting a password try using three unrelated words, eg fi shbooktable; and think of three different words for each account, so if one is compromised the others are safe • never give personal or sensitive details out online or over email • make sure all devices have up-to-date anti-virus soft ware and a fi rewall installed • keep soft ware and apps regularly updated • only download from legal, trusted websites • only open emails and attachments from known and trusted sources • be cautious of internet chats and online dating – there’s no guarantee you’re speaking to who you think • be extremely cautious if you’re asked for money Email and text scams Be careful when opening emails and texts, especially if you don’t know the sender. If an email or text is unexpected or seems unusual, even if it’s from someone you know, ignore it and contact the sender directly to check if they sent it.

Your bank, the police and reputable companies will never ask for sensitive or financial details via email, phone or text.

To protect yourself from scams, known as ‘phishing’: • don’t open attachments or click on links in emails or texts from senders you don’t know • never give out personal information, fi nancial details or passwords in response to an email, when you receive an unexpected phone call or in response to a text message • set up spam fi lters on all of your accounts • don’t respond to emails or texts from unknown sources • always go to a website directly, by typing out the address yourself, when logging into an account For more tips and advice on how to keep yourself and loved ones safe from fraudsters please visit the Sussex Police website.
