Dear All, Last month I had a lovely email from a reader praising the kindness of young people. This is what it said: “I live in Limmard Way, Felpham. On Friday 12 June 2026 I had an unfortunate accident outside my house which resulted in a fall, and I could not move as I am partially disabled. About five minutes later a red Mazda was driving past and four young lads stopped to help me. They were all smartly dressed and off to Goodwood Races. “There is so much bad publicity about young people and this has totally restored my faith in them. Unfortunately, because I was in shock I did not catch their names but if you know anyone that knows them, please could you thank them for their wonderful act of kindness to me.” It’s the little things that mean so much to others. If you have a kindness or local community story you would like to share, please do email me at office@infocusmagazines.co.uk. It’s very uplifting for us all to read them! Enjoy October and the autumnal glow! Best wishes, Kate X Villages In Focus magazine is available to collect from Barleys, Middleton-on-Sea and Bersted In Focus from Bognor Regis Library.

ARTISTS OF THE MONTH:

ZENA WOOD, IAN WOOD AND JAN WOOD

If you enjoy discovering local artists, there is a lovely opportunity to see the work of three talented Sussex artists at Highdown Gallery, Worthing, this month. From 7–11 October, Zena Wood, from Felpham and Ian and Jan Wood, from Middleton-on-Sea, will be exhibiting together at Highdown Gardens. Despite sharing the same surname, Jan, Ian and Zena are not related – but they do share a passion for creativity and the local landscape. Each artist has a distinctly different style. Zena’s atmospheric @zenawoodart oil paintings explore the South Coast and its changing light and moods. Working in an Impressionist tradition, Zena’s landscapes capture not simply what she sees, but what she feels within the landscape. Zena’s work will also feature on some wonderfully original tide clocks made by a local Felpham craftsman. By Ian Wood. Ian Wood @ianwoodart, who trained at Falmouth School of Art, works in a variety of media, including watercolour, acrylics, gouache and water-soluble oils. He particularly enjoys painting local scenes and animals and also teaches art from his Middleton-on-Sea studio. Jan Wood @woodjanart is a self-taught artist with a lifelong love of drawing and painting. Her colourful and characterful work focuses particularly on animals and birds, with watercolour her preferred medium. She also accepts commissions for pet portraits.

By Jan Wood.

The exhibition runs from 7–11 October, 10am–4.30pm, at Highdown Gallery, Highdown Gardens, 33 Highdown Rise (off Littlehampton Road) Worthing, West Sussex BN12 6FB. Entry to Highdown Gardens is free, with free parking.

DRAKE TO BLAKE ROW AND WALK

RAISES £17,923 FOR ST WILFRID’S HOSPICE

Two Felpham friends who took on a 250-mile rowing and walking challenge from Plymouth to Felpham have raised almost £18,000 including Gift Aid for St Wilfrid’s Hospice. Ross Fisher and Glenn Powell, both aged 78 set off from Plymouth on Tuesday 15 July for their Drake to Blake Challenge, Ross rowing his 70-year-old 12ft fishing boat Glenn walking overland carrying a 10kg pack. Ross completed his rowing journey, Saturday 25 July, Glenn completing his walk, Monday 27 July. They arrived back at Felpham Sailing Club to emotional welcomes from family, friends and the Felpham community. Ross’s wife, handled tracking and communications throughout for both men, while fellow friend, John Beer from Felpham, provided the transport and towed Ross’s boat, delivering them both to Plymouth for the start. The pair recently visited St Wilfrid’s Hospice to celebrate the fundraising achievement, and thank them for the support and encouragement they received throughout the challenge and were presented with a cheque of the then amount raised. Over 270 people and local businesses contributed to the JustGiving campaign, alongside offline donations. The idea for the challenge came after Ross decided to repeat, in reverse, his previous rowing journey from Westminster to Felpham. “I’m rowing from Plymouth this time. What are you going to do, Glenn?” he asked his friend. Glenn, who had recently completed the Camino Frances, rather rashly replied: “Well, I’ll walk it.” And Drake to Blake was born. The name, devised by Ross, reflected the journey from Plymouth - home of Sir Francis Drake - to Felpham - home of William Blake. The challenge proved to be every bit as demanding as expected. Ross spent 11 days rowing along the South Coast, sleeping each night on beaches, while Glenn took 13 days to cover the route on foot. They were both tackling the journey during a period of exceptionally hot weather, with temperatures reaching around 30°C. Ross’s progress depended on wind, sea conditions and tides, while Glenn had to negotiate a different set of land obstacles including overgrown footpaths, maize fields, locked gates, sections of busy road where it was too dangerous to walk. The challenge attracted considerable support along the way. Campsites offered Glenn free pitches after hearing about the fund raising effort, strangers provided encouragement and lifts, and pubs and local businesses joined in with donations. The decision to support St Wilfrid’s was particularly personal for both men. Ross had previously raised money for the hospice, while Glenn’s late wife Mary received care from St Wilfrid’s during her final days. St Wilfrid’s provides specialist end-of-life and palliative care, free of charge, to local people and their families at some of the most difficult times in their lives. The hospice relies heavily on fundraising and donations from the local community to sustain these vital services. It also faces the impact of recent increases in National Insurance costs, government funding covers only around 16% of overall costs. This leaves St Wilfrid’s carrying a huge financial burden to ensure that people and families receive the compassionate, specialist care they need at the end of life. We are proud to support an important local charity and the pair are delighted that their slightly unconventional adventure has resulted in such a substantial contribution. The Just Giving Page will now stay open untill 25 October 2026. Please help if you can. https://www.justgiving.com/page/drake-to-blake?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=CL&utm_ campaign=FR-heroes_FRPo_Overall-Weekly_ukvarB

LONDON’S LOST ROUTE TO THE SEA

BY SIMON BAKER IRONS

My interest in the disused canal south of Barnham led me to follow its route from London all the way to Portsmouth. In 2016, I mapped and walked the entire 132‑mile route, a journey that winds through city centres and rural countryside while tracing the 19th‑century inland navigation known as London’s “Lost Route to the Sea,” linking the City of London with the naval harbour at Portsmouth. Britain’s naval power depended on a reliable link between London and Portsmouth, and a chain of inland navigations was developed to carry money and supplies south without risking the sea routes patrolled by Napoleon’s fleet. London sent coal, groceries, porter and pottery down the route, while barges travelling north carried gold bullion to the Bank of England under armed guard. • The route begins at Threadneedle Street in the City of London, outside the Bank of England, and follows the Thames westward to Weybridge before turning south. • From the junction with the Thames at Weybridge the route follows the Wey Navigation through the Surrey countryside and the centre of Guildford to Godalming, the furthest navigable part from the Thames. • From Shalford, just south of Guildford, the route joins the Downs Link Path, an old railway line that once connected Guildford with Shoreham and follows it to Cranleigh. Here it leaves the former track bed and continues as the Wey South Path, tracing the course of the disused Wey and Arun Junction Canal as closely as possible. • The line of the old canal is still easy to trace, with several sections holding water, though many stretches are now heavily overgrown with trees. At Loxwood, volunteers have restored part of the Wey and Arun Canal, and boat trips are offered along the navigable section. • At the end of the navigable section near Drungewick, the route leaves the restored waterway and rejoins the line of the old canal, following it south until it reaches the River Arun near Wisborough Green. From here it continues southward, meeting various stretches of the Arun along the way. • At Amberley, the route meets the River Arun once more, and from here the riverside path can be followed all the way to Ford. • From Ford to Hunston, the canal becomes the Portsmouth to Arundel Canal. It is only visible in places and now carries no water, though several of the old bridges can still be seen along this stretch. • At Hunston, there is a short navigable section leading into Chichester Basin and out towards the marina. Although only a small stretch is in use, the line of the canal remains very clear. • The old route would now leave the canal system and navigate through the various inlets of Chichester Harbour before reaching Portsmouth, where the final section ends at Arundel Street. Whether you are looking to walk the full route or a short section, you can download parts of the walking route from the LDWA website: https://ldwa.org.uk/ldp/members/show_path.php?path_name=London%27s+Lost+Rou te+to+the+Sea To see more photos and walks please follow me on Instagram @piertopiertrekking

30 YEARS OF MUSIC-MAKING ON SUDLEY ROAD This year, the Regis School of Music quietly reaches a milestone: thirty years since it first opened its doors on Sudley Road in Bognor Regis, back in 1996. What started as a small independent music school has grown into something more unusual – an independent charitable music school and live-music venue, one of very few of its kind in the area. Over three decades it has welcomed everyone from complete beginners to advanced players, toddlers to retirees, through classes, private tuition, performing ensembles and community clubs, alongside a full programme of concerts open to the public. The idea behind it hasn’t changed since day one: that music belongs to everyone, not just the few. That’s why the school keeps concert tickets deliberately affordable – just £1 for students and under-18s at most performances – and why its doors stay open to anyone who wants to learn, play, or simply come and listen. Thirty years is a long time for any independent charity to keep going, and it hasn’t happened by accident. It’s been the local community – students, families, audiences, volunteers and supporters – who have kept the music playing, concert after concert, generation after generation. To mark the anniversary, the school is planning its widest programme of concerts and events yet. Whether you’re a lifelong music-lover, looking for lessons, or simply curious about what goes on behind that door on Sudley Road, this seems like exactly the right year to come and see for yourself. CREATURES OF THE DARK

BY KATE SOUTHWORTH

Owls have been associated with Halloween since the Middle Ages, when it was widely believed that these nocturnal birds were linked to the supernatural. The barn owl has even been labelled the ghost owl. The flight of an owl is completely silent, such that they can swoop within inches of us and be undetected in the dark. Add to this, their glowing forward set eyes, eerie haunting calls reaching us from up to a kilometre away, and one can see why people placed this spooky label on these most beautiful of creatures. For urban dwellers, it is the tawny owl we are most likely to see or hear when we are in our beds at night, with a characteristic, “twit- twoo”. Barn owls frequent the open fields, and their call is a screeching sound! Owls are apex predators, at the top of the food chain. They play a critical role in ensuring that the balance is kept in the ecosystem, and no group of creatures become too numerous. An owl family will consume thousands of mice and rats in one year, protecting us all from the diseases spread by these rodents, and making chemical killers unnecessary. Owls also act as an “indicator species,” in other words, if owls are struggling, then this almost certainly means that all those creatures below them in the food chain, on whom they depend, are also in trouble. Barn owls are not on the threatened list at present but are subject to increasing threats. Despite being the most common owl in the UK, the tawny owl is at risk. The numbers of this owl have declined by around 40 per cent in recent decades. Why is this? • Loss of habitat, older trees with deep cavities that they like for nesting are being felled at a concerning rate. • Urban spread is reducing the numbers of small creatures on which they feed. Then there are pesticides. Put down poison for mice or rats, and the poisoned creatures will not die quickly, and may wander outside where they are an easy find for a hungry owl. The owls then absorb some of the poison. These poisonous residues may kill an owl, but if not, will damage their hunting ability, health and breeding success, and these poisons are found in around 85% of dead owls. Sadly, a high number of owl deaths are from road traffic impact. Their diet mainly consists of small mammals such as mice, frogs, etc. but with falling numbers of these creatures owls will take roadkill, but at a high price. • To help the owls, encourage the small creatures that they depend on for food with log piles, and areas of long grass. Fight to save any older trees. If your garden is large enough, put up an owl nesting box. Do not use any chemical killers which could be eaten by smaller animals and ultimately absorbed by the owls. • Our critical harmless owls need our understanding and support, far from any supernatural tendencies, they balance and protect our environment.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP

This easy butternut squash soup recipe is flavoured with red pepper and ginger and then blended until silky smooth. Roasting the squash, rather than boiling it in a pan, really brings out the flavour in the vegetables to make a rich-tasting soup without any added dairy. Ingredients (serves 4) • 1.5 litres/2½ pints • 1.5kg/3lb 5oz peeled and deseeded butternut • 1 tbsp clear honey vegetable stock (optional) squash, cut into 3cm/1¼in cubes (see tip) • salt and freshly ground • 5cm/2in piece fresh • 1 large onion, roughly chopped root ginger, peeled and black pepper • 2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped chopped • 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into cubes • 4 tbsp olive oil Method • Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. • Tip the prepared squash into a large bowl or resealable freezer bag. Add the onion, carrots, red pepper and half the oil. Season with salt and pepper and toss everything together until the vegetables are evenly coated. Tip into a large roasting tin and spread out to form a single layer. • Roast in the oven for 40–45 minutes, or until tender and tinged brown at the edges. Drizzle over the honey, if using, five minutes before the end of cooking. • Place a large, deep-sided saucepan over a medium heat. Add the remaining oil and, when it is hot, add the ginger and fry for a minute. Pour in the stock and bring to the boil, then stir in the roasted vegetables and add salt and pepper. • Remove the pan from the heat and, using a hand blender, blend the mixture until smooth. Return to the heat to warm through and serve hot with crusty bread.

ALISON GRIFFITHS MP

As the summer comes to a close, most people’s thoughts will be turning to the new school and university year. My focus is on Parliament’s return, and holding the Government to account on what matters most here in Felpham, Bersted and our villages. On Parliament’s first day back, I pressed the Prime Minister to introduce the promised Clean Water Bill without delay. The widely respected Cunliffe Review gives the Government the blueprint to reform the water sector, and the delay in implementing its recommendations is unacceptable. Like you, I have had enough of sewage being discharged onto our beaches. The Government must act urgently to fix the broken system. I am also pressing Ministers on Local Government Reorganisation. After further delays announced by the Government, West Sussex is still waiting for a decision. This is wasting time and taxpayers' money. You deserve clarity on how local services will continue to be delivered, and I will continue to press the Government to provide answers. My work in Parliament is to be your voice, so I am Alison Griffiths. always eager to hear more from you about your priorities and the things you think I should be focussing on. If you’d like to share your views about what our local area needs, please get in touch by email: alison.griffiths.mp@parliament.uk. Please also keep up to date with my local initiatives and work in Parliament. You can do so by following me on Facebook and Instagram (@AlisonGriffithsMP), and by subscribing to my monthly newsletter: www.alisongriffiths.org.uk/newsletter.

ALL SCREENS GREAT AND SMALL - OCTOBER

Action, adventure and delicious baked treats abound this month on the small screen, whilst the large screen has plenty of comedy, kids’ entertainment and nail-biting adventure. LARGE SCREEN Digger – 2 October This satirical black comedy film is directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and features a stellar cast including Tom Cruise in the starring role, Riz Ahmed, and John Goodman. Digger Rockwell (Cruise) who is described as the most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity's saviour. But everything is not as it seems and Digger must act quickly if he is to avert the disaster that his actions have caused, which threatens to destroy everything. Monster Mia – 15 October This movie is great half term entertainment for all the family. When twelve-year-old Mia is expelled from her school and sent to the mysterious Rotwood Academy to work on her behaviour she discovers that it is nothing like her previous school, not least because all the students are all monsters. But to survive at Rotwood, Mia has to convince everyone that she’s a monster too. Mia discovers that the monsters aren’t all bad, and some even become her friends, but she has to deal with the plotting Vice Principal Van Vlad who really, really hates humans. Whalefall – 23 October A real race against time movie directed by Brian Duffield and starring Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue and Austin Abrams as Jay Gardiner, a scuba diver who while searching for the remains of his deceased father, Mitt Gardiner (portrayed by Josh Brolin) is swallowed alive by a sperm whale. In a nail-biting race against time, Jay only has one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. SMALL SCREEN The Great British Bake Off (Series 17) - Channel 4 – Tuesday 8pm and has already started Once again Tuesday evenings at 8pm will be sacrosanct in most homes in the country as TGBO once again delights and captivates bakers and nonbakers alike with the threat of over proving, under cooking and the dreaded soggy bottom. Following British icon and baking legend Prue Leith’s departure from the show after series 16, viewers are enjoying new co-judge Nigella Lawson as she joins Paul Hollywood to decide who is this week’s Star Baker and who leaves the tent as Alison Hammond keeps Noel Fielding in check. VisionQuest - Disney+ - 14 October For the lovers of superheroes and based on the Marvel comic character Vision, VisionQuest follows the character Vision, who is an android and former Avenger, as he struggles to reconnect with his memories and find his purpose in life after being rebuilt. Stars British actor Paul Bettany as Vision and James Spader as Ultron. The Terminal List – Prime Video – 21 October This high-octane globe-trotting espionage thriller is action-packed and riveting. Starring Hollywood actor Chris Pratt as Navy SEAL James Reece as he uncovers a military conspiracy linked to the ambush of his platoon while seeking revenge for the deaths of his family and teammates.

THE COLOUR PURPLE

BY FELPHAM FASHION GURU VICKY BOOKER There are certain shades that are always there - key neutrals and colour stories that make the seasonal trends periodically or on repeat. But one colour that doesn’t do the rounds that often is purple. This season that’s set to change, with lots of designers showcasing this rich hue. In colour analysis terms, purple (Cadbury’s Dairy Milk shade as I call it!) is a Vicky Booker. universal colour, meaning it cuts across all the palettes, and can look good on most people. The catwalk looks are being described as ‘Royal purple’. And purple does have royal connotations! Think coronation gowns and luxury velvet. Back in the day, thanks to the classist sumptuary laws enforced by Queen Elizabeth I, only the royal family were allowed to wear clothes made with purple silk (amongst other rules) – hence – Royal Purple! Luckily today, we can all wear whatever we like; the only thing you might get into trouble for is crimes against fashion! As is often the case with a ‘new colour’ trend, it might take a while to filter through to the high street, but if you want to be ahead, here’s a couple of my picks for gents and ladies… Despite the colour name, this classic oxford shirt from Ralph Lauren feels fresh in this vibrant purple Men’s custom fit Shirt (right). Would look great with stone chinos, as well as in Medieval Purple by classic denim jeans. Ralph Lauren, £145. This textured polo is a subtle rich purple shade, and the jacquard print (left) makes it a little different and smart too. If you’ve had your colours ‘done’ and are a cool (or light), you know it can be hard to find some of the Burgundy Purple purple family of shades. Well, this V-neck jumper from Smart Jaquard Polo Shirt by Zara (right) ticks all the boxes and is a spot on match Next, £32. for the Violet in your palette! It’s an oversized fit for a modern slouchy look, so may be worth sizing down if you don’t want it too baggy. This gorgeous print dress (left) would work with sandals for a celebration Mabel Purple Print event whilst its still mild, or pair it with Midi dress by Phase 100 per cent wool Oversize western boots and layer under a fine knit Eight, £149. Jumper by Zara, £55.99. to take it into A/W26! If you want to hear more about the colour and style trends for the new season, make sure to order my Seasonal Trend Style Pack. A whole set of images summarising all the looks and with suggestions on where to find them on the high street. Contact me to order and quote FIF to get £5 off your pack – just £15. OCTOBER HOROSCOPES

BY LOCAL ASTROLOGER LETICIA PARMER We start moving into the darker months as planets glide on their journey through the deep and private sign of Scorpio, the energy of which of course is very much evident in Halloween celebrations or the 'Day of The Dead'. It is time to pull aside the veils and search beyond. Pluto coming out of Retrograde will help us in our desire to go deeper. ARIES To warm your heart and mind this October you will find yourself more spontaneous about hosting a gathering, catching up with friends or accepting last-minute invitations.

LIBRA Before you make plans for this month make sure the children or creative projects are put to bed, to avoid being interrupted right in the middle of a deep meditation.

TAURUS Family duties may be sprung on you, perhaps to do with your father or a male relative. But try to take it all in your stride as a part of your life's deeper enrichment.

SCORPIO Though, this is your month and you really want to go deep, be patient and take in your stride the events at home (or with mother) that may be suddenly sprung on you.

GEMINI Though you are naturally spontaneous and adaptable, you may be taken aback by sudden travel plans sprung upon you. A great month to learn from other cultures.

SAGITTARIUS You start the month able to meditate and quietly connect but by the end of October you find it hard to hold your tongue - you want to point out the flaws in others' beliefs.

CANCER Mars remains in your own sign all month, so you'll have plenty of energy and drive. Pluto brings unexpected opportunities for deep, spiritual and nostalgic work too.

CAPRICORN The older you become the more you can connect with the spiritual aspects of life, though this month your natural business brain may try to monetise this.

LEO This month's challenges are all about diplomacy, harmony and partnership. Why not offer to team up with someone you normally clash with, in order to learn and grow?

AQUARIUS Pluto in your own sign is coming back into full power this month, tempting you to wonder if you are actually in the driving seat of your life. So remember, you designed it!

VIRGO Though you feel duty-bound to offer to host the gathering, make sure you pace yourself because Pluto is ready to bring back its lessons on health and diet.

PISCES Pisces is a very deep and spiritual sign, so now you will definitely be honouring the essence of the season, though deep messages or insights can arrive suddenly.
