wELCOME Hello everyone and welcome to your March issue of Felpham in Focus.

Another month of lockdown but spring is in the air and with the lighter days and so many people now having Covid-19 vaccinations – I think we can allow ourselves a little bit of hope.

I am truly grateful for the huge support I have had from our fabulous advertisers and readers this month. without you, the magazine would not exist, and I have seen first-hand how our Sussex community really does support each other in hard times – and that is very humbling.

Acts of kindness and generosity make a huge difference so please do send in any stories you would like to share about local people or businesses who have helped you in recent months as well as innovative ways you and your families have managed to beat the lockdown blues. My son has launched a podcast called Time out with Charlie (anchor. fm/charlie-stewart) to help him and other teenagers keep on track.

It’s International women’s Day (8 March), Mothering Sunday (14 March) and Pie week (1-7 March), so let’s raise our glasses (probably at home) to girl power and pies in March and a new dawn for businesses and opportunities the world over.

In March 2020 The Rotary Club of bognor Regis recognised that many young children were going hungry.

Children whose parents had suddenly lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic and needed support but who didn’t meet the criteria for the Government’s Food Voucher scheme.

So, we have been working closely with local primary schools and their brilliant teachers to support these pupils with grants and generous donations from our community as well as the National Lottery Community Fund and local Rotarians in bognor Regis.

DON’T SACRIFICE SLEEP WHEN THE CLOCKS GO FORWARD

by Kate Stewart For many of us getting a good night’s sleep during these unsettled times has almost been impossible – so how do we prepare to make the most of the extra daylight hour when the clocks go forward at 1am on Sunday March 28th?

“Many people struggle with losing an hour of sleep when British summertime begins and the clocks jump forward. Although it’s only 60 minutes, it can affect our body clocks which in turn affects our sleep patterns,” says Lisa Artis, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of The Sleep Charity.

She adds: “For some people, it can take time to get back into a routine and that can impact on their energy levels, general wellbeing and even productivity at work. While it’s great that it’s no longer pitch black in the morning and early evenings, losing an hour of sleep is less than desirable.”

There are, however, some simple steps you can take to make sure you feel less groggy and refreshed and energised for spring – which let’s face it we have been looking forward to for a long time.

If you’re someone who feels the effects of losing an hour’s sleep, try following The Sleep Charity’s tips below to help yourself adapt: • •

Move bedtime a little earlier, just by 10 minutes or so, in the days approaching the clocks going forward. It won’t seem too bad come Sunday when you lose those precious 60 minutes!

With a change of natural light patterns, keep the bedroom as dark as possible. Light suppresses secretion of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin. So while it is important to expose yourself to natural light during the waking hours as much as possible, conversely, do not expose yourself to bright light when it is dark outside.

Practice good sleep hygiene. Create a sleep-friendly environment that enhances your chances of falling asleep, staying asleep and sleeping well. This includes a cool temperature (around 16-18 degrees) and eliminating distractions (i.e. banning mobiles, tablets etc. in the hour before bed).

It may sound simple, but make sure your bed is comfortable. It’s difficult to get deep, restful sleep on one that’s too soft, too hard, too small or too old. If it’s more than seven years, maybe look at investing in a new bed or mattress.

Try not to overindulge in caffeine, food and alcohol over the clock change weekend, as these all have a negative impact on sleep.

If you can’t sleep, don’t lie there worrying about it. Get up and do something you find relaxing such as reading a book until you feel sleepy again – then go back to bed.

Although many of you will be working from home, children and adults should avoid screen activities for an hour before bedtime as this can suppress the sleep hormone melatonin from being created.

Recently as more and more of us have been delving into either our own history or that of bognor Regis, the subject of butlin’s often arises. billy butlin arrived here in 1931 when he opened a Recreation Shelter on the corner of Lennox Street, where there is a new blue Plaque. within two years he had opened a Zoo and an Aquarium in the centre of the promenade, where today we have Mountbatten Court.

It was not until 1960 that butlin’s Holiday Camp opened in bognor Regis on the land known as brooklands. This opening of the 58 acre site on 2nd July 1960 was to herald the arrival of over 5,000 campers per week. Many of the town traders reported an immediate increase in business by these visitors to the town. ‘Campers’ who could easily be spotted wearing their butlin’s badge’s, which was their club membership identification for use on the Camp.

The Centre has played host to visitors and staff from worldwide destinations. During the 1960’s butlin’s employees were students, on working holidays from places as diverse as Australia, New Zealand, Iceland and, for one season, from Czechoslovakia.

There have been many changes over the years, from the demolition of chalets to the construction of three hotels. The building of the Pavilion and an indoor swimming pool with the outdoor flumes.

Currently the flumes and the indoor pool are being demolished to make way for future constructions. we can now watch to see future changes to this site which has provided holiday entertainment to thousands of holiday makers throughout its life.

bRIDGING THE GAP by ANDREw SAUNDERS

Hidden between Downview Road and Navigation Drive in yapton lies a monument to a feat of engineering not normally associated with this part of the world – burndell bridge.

Dating back to 1823, the bridge was built to provide a safe passage for barges travelling from London to Portsmouth. The canals linked safe waters and rivers such as the Thames, wey and Arun and coal and chalk were transported for trade and munitions were carried for the Navy, and bullion for the bank of England. bridges were built from Ford to Chichester to allow traffic and farm workers access to roads and tracks that would be affected.

Sadly, many are gone like the ones at Drove Lane or Main Road, yapton but others, like Tack Lee and burndell bridge, survive. we hope to save, restore and rejuvenate burndell bridge and its immediate surroundings.

Tucked away in the corner of a farmer’s field for 150 years after the canal ceased operation, the bridge has no doubt survived because it wasn’t on a used route and has become increasingly overgrown. The building of Emerald Gardens has brought the bridge into focus and we hope to work with local residents to save and restore its character while creating a wildlife-friendly path underneath it wide enough for everyone to use. we are looking at all the different ways we can help as well as researching the history of the bridge and canal. Is it mothering sunday or mothers day on march 14? by kate stewart Mothering Sunday began as an explicitly religious 16th Century event with no connection to mothers at all. The word ‘mothering’ referred to the ‘mother church’, which is to say the main church or cathedral of the region. It became a tradition that, on the fourth Sunday of Lent, people would return to their mother church for a special service. This pilgrimage was apparently known as ‘going a-mothering’, and became something of a holiday event, with domestic servants traditionally given the day off to visit their own families as well as their mother church.

One of the tastiest Mothering Sunday traditions was baking Simnel cake. Often regarded as a purely Easter-related confection, this rich fruit cake is also tied to Mothering Sunday, as a bit of indulgence to make up for the general austerity of Lent (and a nice home-baked present to take home to your mother).

Consisting of layers of cake and marzipan, a traditional Simnel cake also reflects the religious overtones of the event with its 11 balls of marzipan, representing Jesus’ disciples minus Judas.

Despite its long existence in British culture, Mothering Sunday eventually fell out of fashion in the UK at the dawn of the 20th Century. This is where a lady named Constance Penswick-Smith enters the picture. The daughter of a vicar, she thought the loss of Mothering Sunday was a great shame, and worked hard to rekindle interest, even writing a book titled The Revival of Mothering Sunday. As if that wasn’t enough, she also founded the Society for the Observance of Mothering Sunday. Her determination paid off, and the fading festival was restored to the culture of the country, only with much more of a focus on celebrating motherhood. And this was due to an American influence...

So if our celebration of maternity is properly called Mothering Sunday, what is ‘Mother’s Day’?

Technically speaking it’s a completely unrelated American event, invented by a woman called Anna Jarvis in 1908. Her initial inspiration was a desire to honour her own mother, who had been a militant peace activist during the US Civil War. Anna Jarvis’s growing ambition to create a formal ‘Mother’s Day’ for all American mothers was literally laughed out of the room at first, with officials jokingly saying that it might lead to a ‘Mother-in-Law’s Day’. Anna Jarvis wasn’t easily put off, though, and in 1914 US President Woodrow Wilson officially signed Mother’s Day into existence.

It was Anna Jarvis who inspired our own Constance Penswick-Smith to revive the more religiously-flavoured Mothering Sunday over here, although the two separate events have since become conflated in most people’s minds. Interestingly, Anna Jarvis herself was the first person to condemn the growing commercialisation of Mother’s Day, and she started organising boycotts of the event she herself created. One of her anti-Mother’s Day protests even led to her arrest for disturbing the peace, and she was particularly appalled by ready-made Mother’s Day cards, saying ‘A printed card means nothing except that you are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world.’ Buying chocolates was a no-no as well. ‘You take a box to Mother,’ she scoffed, ‘and then eat most of it yourself. A pretty sentiment!’

bLAKE’S TRAIL by SIMON bAKER IRONS Lockdown has really given me time to explore the local area. I thought I had discovered most trails locally, but this month’s featured trek is a circular walk through Felpham and part of bognor Regis following a trail that tells us more about Felpham’s most famous resident william blake.

The blake’s Trail was set up by students from Felpham Community College after receiving a grant from the National Lottery. The route takes in some key sites and follows a series of information boards highlighting william blake, his contacts and significance in the local area. The FCC have also created a website about the trail and have made videos reciting some of the poet’s work. www.blakestrail.org The 4.3 km (2.7 Miles) circular trail starts at the westerly entrance to Hotham Park, just off the High Street but can be joined at any point throughout its route. The first information board outside the gates of the park explains a little about Sir Richard Hotham and the land he sold to william Hayley who in turn employed blake to paint pictures for his library in Turret House.

The trail leads into the park and past Hotham House. A previous featured walk around the park highlights the best of this public space and could be combined with this trail. Leave the park at the far side and take path under subway to Hook Lane which leads to Felpham Recreation Field where cricket is played in the summer. The information board at this location is currently missing.

Follow the path around the recreation field, cross both the b2259 & Aldingbourne Rife and head towards St Mary’s Norman Church built in the 12th Century with its square tower, a key landmark that can be viewed from many places around Felpham. walk through the churchyard and exit through the lychgate that was erected in 1897 to commemorate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria.

In Limmer Lane and opposite the Thatched House Pub was the site of Turret House. The poet william Hayley built himself a house on this land and lived there from 1800. The house had a square turret over the entrance with a circular lookout giving fine views towards the coast. Unfortunately, the original house was demolished in 1961 and replaced with flats. An information board can be found on the wall of the pub featuring blakes friendship with Hayley.

Further along Limmer Lane is Old Rectory Gardens where the grounds of the rectory were redeveloped in the 1950/60s. Half the land was used for housing and the remaining garden space has been divided into a private garden for the existing house (now flats) and a public open space that is a real hidden gem in the village. The trail passes right through the gardens that display some formal planting amongst some more mature trees. Take time out in this peaceful garden to count the goldfish in the pond bordered with yew hedging or take a rest in the storytelling corner made up of carved seat and a zigzag bench.

Exit the gardens at Vicarage Lane and turn into blakes Road. blakes Cottage is situated on the left and was william blake’s home for three years from 1800-1803. The board located on the grass verge describes an incident that occurred between blake and a soldier. blake was arrested at the nearby Fox Inn after allegedly making seditious remarks to the soldier.

Continue to the seafront along blakes Road and turn towards bognor Regis, the next board is sited on the greensward in front of the iconic beach huts. Felpham beach would have looked very different in the latter part of the 18th century when it was first developed as a holiday resort and at the time where Hayley would have taken regular childhood swims.

The trail continues as a lovely stroll along the promenade, it is worth stopping to look back along the coast and admire the beautiful view whatever the season. The last board can be found on the long straight promenade at the edge of the pebbles outside butlins. Follow the perimeter of butlins back to Hotham Park to complete this informative walk. by Kate McCarthy Learning new things has all kinds of fringe benefits.

Lots of us began 2021 with the ambition to learn a new skill: beginner’s computer programming, conversational Italian, or how to paint with watercolours maybe. We learn new skills for many reasons. Perhaps we need to improve our computer literacy to gain a promotion, or Italian so we can speak to our new in-laws, or we’ve always fancied learning to paint. Learning is fun but its benefits go way beyond the actual skill learned, and the skill is irrelevant, whether its crochet or advanced mathematics, the extra benefits are the same.

Positive brain changes – The white matter in our brain is comprised of nerve fibres covered in a fatty sheath called myelin.

It is involved in learning and co-ordination of communication between different brain regions. The more we practice a new skill the more our white matter increases in density, which helps us when we learn other new skills.

Increased learning speed – When brain neurons are stimulated, more neural pathways are formed and the faster our brains process new information. It’s as if ‘learning’ is a muscle which strengthens as its exercised.

Interconnections – When we learn a new skill our brains draw on information and skills we already possess, and we build on that existing knowledge. But a wide knowledge base also makes it easier for us to learn more new skills.

Increased interestingness! – (Yes, it’s a real word!) Well-rounded individuals tend to find it easier to relate to others because a wider knowledge base makes it easier to find things in common and thus make friends.

Beat boredom – Repetition can quickly become monotonous. Following the same routine every night, ‘supper, bath, TV, bed’ makes it easy to become bored. Learning new things breaks the cycle of monotony and gives our brain something to do.

Increased adaptability – Learning new things physically alters our brains in such a way that our outlook and perceptions change. These alterations make it easier for us to adapt to sudden life changes, like a global pandemic for instance! Adapting to change is a skill, and the more varied our life experiences are, the easier it is to draw on them and adjust Prevent cognitive decline – Learning origami doesn’t mean we won’t get dementia. There are many types of dementia and the causes are nuanced. But there are many studies which suggest that people who learn new skills are less likely to experience cognitive decline including dementia. Mental decline is linked to demyelination of our brain. People who actively learn new skills are not giving their brains a chance to demyelinate, and their neural pathways are primed to create work-a-rounds if some area of the brain does begin to fail. The key seems to be to learn things outside of our comfort zone, so if you are a knitter, don’t choose to learn crochet, which is similar, choose Russian, or salsa dancing, or the ukulele instead, subjects which push you out of your comfort zone, but (importantly) which you actually want to learn and will enjoy.

Keep exercising that brain!

bRITISH PIE wEEK 1-7 MARCH

by TRACEy ANDERSON It’s hard to beat a good pie. Savoury or sweet there is something blissful about cracking the crust to release the fragrant contents within.

Did you know that three quarters of the british population say they eat a pie at least once a month and the british pie industry is worth £1.2bn per year! but when did the pie come to britain?

The earliest reference to pies as ‘pyes’ seems to be in the 1300s. These first pies were savoury, meat-only affairs, and the pastry case was not for eating, it was there as a form of crockery and to help preserve the contents for longer, particularly on sea voyages. Pie bases went by the unappetising name of coffins (‘coffyns’). by medieval times pies had become something of a centrepiece for banqueting tables. Cooks became competitive and enormous pie cases were made which could contain anything from live actors to musicians. These were definitely for entertainment only and not baked for consumption, though the ‘coffyn’ reference would have added a certain frisson to proceedings.

The nation’s favourite apple pie first materialised in the 14th Century. Another literary heavyweight, Geoffrey Chaucer published a recipe, which also contained figs, raisins, and pears, but no sugar, as it was too much of a luxury ingredient at the time. The pie continues to evolve, taking influences from other cultures, but in UK polls the apple pie is consistently voted the favourite sweet pie while steak and ale tops the savoury charts.

THE ONSET OF SPRING

The arrival of March is very much a welcome one. The first month of spring, with temperatures beginning to rise, it is a time of hope and anticipation.

As the month progresses, blackthorn hedges will be bursting into blossom across the countryside, while primrose, red campion, marsh marigold and lesser celandine provide an early splash of colour. where the air is warmer, brimstone, peacock and red admiral flit in the sunshine awoken from their winter slumber. winter visitors have been leaving, but even before the last have set forth for their summer breeding grounds, our first summer migrants are touching down on our shores. walking along the shingle beaches of Pagham Harbour and Medmerry, you stand a good chance of spotting wheatear just arrived after their journeys from tropical Africa. The smart little males have a grey crown and back, black wings and an orange flush to the breast. Sporting a black patch through its eye and a white stripe above, it flashes its white rump as it flies ahead. It is this flash of white that gave rise to its name, the Old English for ‘white’ being ‘wheat’ and ‘arse’ being ‘ear’. The females are less showy with grey-brown back and creamy-buff underparts. wren Chiffchaffs are hot on their tails. Although with our increasingly milder winters some do stay with us all year round, the majority of these small active warblers, still arrive in the spring. Picking through the trees and hedgerows, they have an olive-brown back and dull yellowish underparts, epitomising the title of ‘little brown job’ – the name given to a number of small, similar, nondescript birds. Their voice is the easiest way to recognise them as they call their name ‘chiff-chaff, chiff-chaff ’, over and over, as consistently as a metronome.

Meanwhile our resident birds are busy with their own vocalisations as they get on with the task of establishing territories. Robin, wren and dunnock sing throughout the year but are now increasing their performances. The robin has a varied, lyrical song and the dunnock, although similar, is shorter and faster. The tiny wren, tail cocked, has a surprising loud song for its size, which it belts out, finishing with a distinctive trill and seeming to tremble with effort. The ‘teacher, teacher’ call gives away the great tit and the song thrush repeats phrases in threes and fours from high up. However, it is the humble blackbird that rates as being one of our finest songsters in my opinion. Across the country it pours out a beautiful mellow aria and at dusk is the most exquisite prelude to the night. yes, spring is here, emerging, growing, unfurling and arriving with each new day.

Garden View tools of the trade by rachel leverton The right tools make gardening easier, and in my opinion you should buy the best you can afford then look after them so they will last many years. But which tools are essential?

Gloves – Gardening is hard on the hands. Weeds, roots and digging are brutal on the skin. Buy a thick, good quality multi-purpose pair to begin with. Make sure they fit. My first pair were too large and cumbersome. I was so naive I didn’t realise they came in different sizes … much like gardens … and gardeners!

Secateurs – The task of pruning comes around with alarming regularity, so a good pair of secateurs is one of the most used items in my garden tool kit. Find a pair that feel good to hold, are well-balanced and easy to operate with one hand. Keep them clean and sharp and they will serve you well for many seasons.

Trowel – Useful for hand weeding, dividing smaller plants, planting, potting on, and seed sowing.

Hand Fork – A hand fork is essential for breaking up compacted soil. Sometimes it’s easier to use than a trowel and is less likely to damage roots in more densely planted areas or when separating smaller plants.

I like a comfort handle for my hand tools but make sure to choose tools where the shaft of the handle and trowel (or fork) are one unit, not welded or rivetted together, as they are not as strong and snap with repeated use. I choose stainless-steel tools because they are rust resistant.

Watering can – A large watering can is great, but very heavy when full so if you have arthritis or not much upper body strength choose a smaller watering can that you can handle easily and make a few more trips to the tap. A rose allows for a gentle sprinkler effect on tiny seeds and seedlings. You can use a hose if you garden a larger area. Choose a multi-tasking one with misting and sprinkler attachments Spade – You can’t dig large areas without one. As with hand tools, I prefer stainless steel. Keep it clean, with a sharp edge for digging, planting, and edging beds. Choose one that feels right for your height.

Fork – A stainless-steel fork is great for stony soil, and for breaking up compacted earth. It’s also good for lifting shrubs without damaging the root system too much.

Dutch Hoe – Weeding is a necessary task (and a somewhat relentless one during the growing season). The Dutch hoe has a shallow angled blade with a front cutting edge for keeping weeds down between seedlings and established shrubs and plants.

Ground rake – Use this for breaking down the soil to that fine tilth gardening books go on about. Use the wide head and teeth to open and level the top surface of the soil, then use the back of the rake to firm it down. It makes seed-sowing easier and more likely to produce healthy seedlings.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson First published in English just over a decade ago this Swedish thriller – the first of a trilogy – was a huge hit. It was a time when Nordic Noir was just starting to take off in this country and remains a classic of the genre. So I was interested to see if it stood up to a re-read 12 years later, and it certainly does.

Mikael Blomkvist is an investigative journalist but a recent article about the wealthy Swedish financier Wennerstrom has landed him with a two month prison sentence for libel. But while waiting for his sentence to begin Blomkvist receives an unusual job offer from millionaire industrialist Henrik Vanger. He wants Blomkvist to investigate the murder of his great-niece, Harriet, forty years earlier. He takes the job, moving to the island where the Vangers live. He ends up turning to computer hacker Lisbeth Slanader for help, a young woman who has no tolerance for others, society, or the law.

What appears to be a simple thriller on the surface offers so much more. From corruption in Swedish society to attitudes towards women in Sweden, this evocative novel is satisfying, if violent. As a reader you feel part of the action as you move with the characters from Sweden to Hebdy Island. Here, more than in many other novels, the geography of Sweden feels like a character in its own right and the mood of the characters and the pace itself cleverly switches as we move from one to the other. For me this was the most satisfying part of this exemplar of the Nordic Noir genre.

The Werepuppy by Jacqueline Wilson Mickey has four sisters, and three of them are older than him.

He doesn’t get on with them and is frequently teased. Then one night his parents go out, leaving the three older girls, Meryl, Mandy, and Mona, in charge. Delighted to have the house to themselves the girls decide to watch Savage Snarl a scary werewolf movie. And it really IS scary. Even the older girls think so.

But for Mickey it has a lasting effect: he becomes scared of dogs. Unsure what to do, his mum decides that the only real solution is to buy Mickey a puppy of his own! Dragged to the dog rescue home Mickey would rather be anywhere else until he encounters one puppy who bites his younger sister’s finger.

Could this be Mickey’s very own werewolf – or werepuppy!

Wolfie, as he is called, is no ordinary puppy and turns out to be the best pet that any boy could ask for!

12) This application is one of several proposed other developments in the local area (barnham/ Eastergate, westergate, yapton, Fontwell, Climping and Littlehampton west bank) that will bring potentially up to a further 6,500 homes (minimum 4,500) to this area of Arun. All these proposals are being dealt with in isolation rather than with a holistic strategy. All these proposals can impact on each other as they have similar development timelines, yet no overall time plan is generated and there is no coordination of the separate developments. Thus, an objection should be registered, on this application, based upon the impact that this application will have locally when it is taken out of context with those identified and planned developments within the ADC Local Plan and the surrounding Parishes Neighbourhood plans. All above 12 points were to be sent to ADC planning portal for objection.

EMERGENCY & RESILIENCE GROUP: Councillor Mrs G. Moss reported that she had received the Lloyds Pharmacy Regional award titled ‘Local Hero’. She said she was very humbled and delighted to receive this but wanted to point out that is in recognition of all volunteers. (from delivering essential items to being a friendly voice on the end of the phone, a team of 40 volunteers, co-ordinated by the Felpham Emergency Resilience Group (FERG) has helped 100’s of local people in need).

heart of felpham – the beach

Until the mid 18th century Felpham’s economy was based on agriculture and maritime activities. After that date it developed a new character as a holiday resort. The poet William Hayley enjoyed sea bathing here as a child in the 1750s and in 1770 he and others from Chichester visited Felpham for ‘a little party of pleasure’.

There were bathing machines by 1781; in newspaper advertisements placed between that date and 1799 houses were advertised to let for the season.

The village, ‘at once rural and marine’, was extolled as also having a dry and healthy soil, opportunities for sailing, and a ‘genteel’ clientele. It was perhaps because of Felpham’s evident success as a resort, albeit small, that Sir Richard Hotham chose nearby Bognor c.1785 for his much larger projected undertaking of the same kind.

William Hayley bought a furnished cottage in Felpham in 1791 to continue his association with the sea and moved to the village permanently in 1800. The Duke of Richmond’s sister-in-law, the sculptress Anne Seymour Damer, also visited the place in 1791 and other aristocratic patrons followed, many visiting Hayley. Besides many attractions, there were great houses nearby to see, while boats could be hired for excursions to the Owers lightship or Selsey Bill. In the early 19th century, in contrast to the grander style represented by Bognor’s hotel, subscription room, library, and other visitors’ facilities, Felpham remained quiet and informal, while also taking the overflow of Bognor’s visitors at busy times. In 1884 it was said a hotel was greatly needed, but none seems to have been built before the 1920’s when there were two: the Beachcroft on the front South of the village and the Southdowns in Felpham Way. Whatever the season? Bright or grey? We see a couple strolling on a sunlit shore? Or a weather-beaten boat bobbing beneath a lowering sky? This is Felpham …

The shingle beach (with lots of sand when the tide is out!) continues to offer plenty for our community and visitors to enjoy, including all the classic British seaside trimmings with beach huts, sunbathing and watersports. Felpham beach itself is fairly typical of West Sussex beaches in that it is largely pebble and shingle divided by wooden groynes. As the tide drops out there are a few rock pools and a large area of sand.

Fabulous views along the coastline and out to sea can be seen from the two very good cafés, The Lobster Pot, serving excellent food from breakfast to lunch and evening meals and the more traditional, Boat House Café.

Unfortunately, as with most coastal areas in the UK, the beaches are sources of pollution and we have a constant fight against litter, especially plastic which impacts our health and welfare. During these unprecedented times The Felpham Village Conservation Society has encouraged our members and the public to carry out private, mini beach cleans, on an ad hoc basis, disposing of litter safely while complying with social distancing and exercise restrictions. Our members have been offered a litter picker per household and we have had a good response, with individuals and families helping to pick up litter on our beaches, for which are very grateful. Our monthly organised beach cleans will resume when safe to do so. In the meantime, pick up plastic and please don’t let face masks fall from your pockets as these are becoming a new source of litter on the beach. We look forward to welcoming you all back soon.

can a spring clean be green? by sarah davey When the spring light catches the surfaces in my home, I see smears and dust, and I fall victim to ‘the spring-cleaning bug’. Suddenly I want to scrub, dust and polish everything in sight.

A few years ago, I made a big effort to become a ‘greener cleaner’. I worried about the active ingredients in my cleaning products and wondered how much damage that chemical cocktail was doing to the planet?

Most of us have a miniature chemical factory stashed under our sinks: detergents, bleaches, and degreasers, all containing potentially hazardous substances which find their way into groundwater and contaminate the lakes and the oceans.

Phosphates are some of the main culprits. They are common in laundry detergents and some cleaning products. An average consumer uses the equivalent of 14Kg of detergent a year. High phosphate levels in water cause ‘algae blooms’ which contribute to the death of fish and other waterdwelling creatures. These algae blooms are becoming more common thanks to a combination of pollutants and global warming.

Cleaning products can have an adverse effect on our health. Household ammonia is often found in window or general glass cleaners. It is a skin and eye irritant and deadly to fish, even in low concentrations, so it’s not something we should flush down our drains. Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) is corrosive and an eye, skin, and respiratory irritant. It is especially toxic to people with heart conditions or asthma. D-limonene is a degreasant found in citrus and orange cleaners. It is also a neurotoxin, an irritant and can cause respiratory distress.

But as I investigated Eco products I stumbled into a minefield. Many big companies produce eco-brands, but this involves ‘greenwashing’, which is defined as an attempt to make consumers believe a company is doing more to protect the environment than it actually is. They use unregulated words like ‘natural’ and ‘eco-friendly’ while still using potentially harmful chemicals. They don’t list ingredients or information about manufacture and supply, and if you check their websites there are no environmental targets published nor information about progress on their environmental impact.

I won’t lie, truly environmentally friendly products are more expensive so the cheapest way to do a green spring clean is to make your own and there are some great websites around with detailed instructions on how to do just this.

I did try to make my own but found that work constraints meant I struggled with some of the more time-consuming concoctions, but I’ve listed a couple of websites in case you feel you’d like to try this. I am a huge fan of distilled white vinegar which I use to clean toilets, windows, and mirrors. I also like Bicarbonate of Soda which is a great degreaser, scouring agent, and deodoriser. For readymade cleaning products I’ve suggested a couple of UK websites which are certified environmentally and vegan friendly.

I’m not perfect. Sometimes I do grab a regular cleaning product for convenience but I’m gradually becoming greener and if we all switched even one or two of our products for a greener cleaner, the planet would thank us.

Shed, Garage & Outbuilding Security we have recently seen an increase in reported burglaries to sheds, garages and outbuildings across Arun and Chichester district. Some targeted outbuildings had been left unlocked but others were using flimsy locks or padlocks which will not protect their contents – whether it’s a car, bike or lawnmower. burglars will often try a shed or garage first to find the tools they need to get into the house so we would like to remind you to leave your property secure when unattended or not in use.

The top five most common items stolen from sheds and outbuildings: 1. bikes.

2. Mowers.

3. Sports equipment.

4. Power tools.

5. Garden tools.

Tips to remember: 1. Keep it locked. Install security lights.

2. Install an alarm. Install CCTV. 3. If you already have CCTV, ensure it is in good working order.

Secure your bike to the ground or a lockable stand within a locked shed or garage and it’s worth draping an old sheet or blanket over mowers or bikes to keep them out of view. Property marking your items is advisable and some tools can be painted with your name or postcode. Forensic marking is also an option. Please be assured that our teams are continuing with patrols and following up all enquiries to identify those responsible.
