It’s June already and we have a four-day bank holiday to celebrate a unique IN FOCUS milestone in British history – Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – the first British Monarch to celebrate 70 years of service.

Thank you to Sussex photographer, Henry Dallal, who has shared with us his wonderful official Platinum Jubilee portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on this month’s front cover. The photograph was released on the Queen’s 96th birthday to mark this historic achievement by a woman whose resilience and service to others knows no bounds. (www.henrydallalphotography.com) The Platinum Jubilee festival weekend (2-5 June) will see Bognor Regis Town Council lighting the seafront Beacon Brazier as well as hundreds of jubilee concerts, tea parties and celebrations across West Sussex – see pages 13, 10-11, 21, and 52. If you find it difficult to get out or prefer to be at home, the whole weekend will be televised including Trooping the Colour, Platinum Party at the Palace and the Platinum Jubilee Pageant.

CORONATION EVEREST

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrating seventy years on the throne must be triggering all sorts of royal memories. My earliest is a mixture of Mount Everest, lots of rain and the Queen of Tonga – just one schoolboy’s memories of the coronation in June 1953. To reach our balcony seat in Pall Mall meant battling our way onto the packed underground, passengers brandishing copies of The Times with its headlined-scoop: ‘Everest Conquered’ – and by a British team. A day of double rejoicing! A book about the climb was even called Coronation Everest. Then it rained, it poured all day long. Larger-than-life Queen Salote of Tonga insisted on facing the cold damp weather in an open carriage, endearing herself to the cheering crowds of drenched well-wishers lining the streets. Once the procession passed, and cosily dry in my father’s office, mountains of sandwiches and cakes made for a mouth-watering coronation feast as we watched the rest of the royal day on a specially-installed black and white television. The first coronation to be televised, TV sales rocketed that year. Back in the 1950s, television was an exciting novelty, a magic box, revered and cherished like a religious icon.

Fast forward to 2016, to the Queen’s celebration of her 90th birthday. Traditionally, local authorities and civic organisations communicate their patriotic greetings in the form of a Loyal Address usually from the pen of a calligrapher on vellum or parchment. West Sussex wanted to be different, producing a book to document the Queen’s numerous visits to the county. My task was picture research and contributing to the accompanying text which had to be ghost-written under the name of the Queen’s representative, the Lord-Lieutenant for West Sussex.

What emerged was a twenty-page colour-illustrated record of the Queen’s many private and official visits to the county between 1929 and 2006, brought up to date with her racing wins at Fontwell, Hickstead and Goodwood up to 2015. Few copies were printed – one for Her Majesty and a few file copies, so it’s a very scarce book. It chronicles dozens of visits from Gatwick, Crawley and Horsham in the north down to Worthing and the south coast. It was gratifying to be told that our West Sussex Loyal Address stood out from the rest!

The story starts in our own immediate area, with the very first links that the then Princess Elizabeth made with West Sussex. It was in 1929 when the young princess, not quite three, stayed with her grandfather, King George V, as he convalesced from a dangerous illness at Craigweil, a distinguished marine residence in Pagham, since demolished. (So strictly speaking it should be Pagham Regis, a title snatched by Bognor!) Craigweil was delightful, a suntrap in the pines, overlooking the beach, fresh seawater pumped to every bathroom and music piped around the house.

What made it more delightful to the king was little Elizabeth‘s stay. Said to be his most lively visitor, she played in his bedroom and was seen trotting by his bath-chair as he was wheeled around the locality. Reportedly a great tonic to her recuperating grandfather, her fortnight’s stay in Pagham is said to have been quite as beneficial as all his doctors and the sea air.

Felpham in Focus Queen Mary wrote in her diary: ‘I played with Lilibet in the garden making sand pies’.

The sand had been carted into the grounds of Craigweil and there the princess made her castles with the beach toys her grandmother had personally bought at Burgess’s Bazaar in Bognor. Queen Mary loved shopping. Many distinguished visitors attended the king, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, seen in uncharacteristic pose playing horses on all fours, the young princess leading him by his beard!

Much later, the Queen’s lifelong love of horses brough her to West Sussex on many occasions. Her very first racing triumph was here in West Sussex in 1949, at Fontwell, when her Irish-bred chaser Monaveen, owned jointly with her mother but under her own colours for the first time, romped to victory in the Chichester Handicap Steeplechase. The 50s, 60s and 70s saw the Queen with yet more triumphs at nearby Goodwood. It was after racing on the second day of Glorious Goodwood in 1952, just a few months after her accession, that the Queen came down – it might seem rather surprisingly – to Davenport Road on Felpham’s Beach Estate. This was to visit the seaside residence of Lord Rupert Nevill, High Sheriff of Sussex, a personal friend. She’s almost certainly the only English queen to have visited Felpham.

Apart from these private visits, in our locality it’s Chichester that’s been most honoured by several official visits. Her first, in 1956, to inspect a guard of honour from the Royal Sussex Regiment and then attending the dedication of the Sailors’ Chapel in the cathedral. In 1962 she returned, this time to the Festival Theatre in its opening year, to see Laurence Olivier and Sybil Thorndike in Uncle Vanya. On two occasions the Queen visited the Royal Military Police Corps’ headquarters, firstly in 1978.

Our book even reminded her of the lunch menu: that she dined on avocado pear stuffed with prawns, roast lamb and then finishing with a ‘RMP pudding’, a very special bombe Alaska. Interested in the police horses, Her Majesty fed them some lunchtime carrots. Returning to their training centre in 1990 , she saw the scene of a simulated murder and a dramatic show of battle skills by the Redcaps’ mounted display team.

Four years earlier, in 1986, she’d come to Chichester Cathedral for the Royal Maundy Service, held in Sussex for the first time in its history, distributing Maundy coins to 60 men and 60 women representing 60 years of the Queen’s life.

Chichester was again honoured by the Queen’s presence on her last official visit to the county in November 2017. After visiting Canine Partners training school for guide dogs at Heyshott, near Midhurst, she returned to the Festival Theatre for a special entertainment before lunching in the Minerva Theatre and listening to a solo performance by Chichester resident Patricia Routledge. She is said to have many happy memories of her time in West Sussex stretching over 88 years. Will Her Majesty ever return?

LOCAL HISTORY BY SYLVIA ENDACOTT Are you going shopping at the weekend? Perhaps you are going to one of those out of town shopping complexes. However will they evoke the same type of memories in 25 – 50 years’ time? Do ‘Comet’s, Dixon’s, Leatherworld, Tesco’s, Homeworld’ conjure up the same sort of magic as those of the past traders in Bognor Regis.

My favourite card was sent by E & O Carter, Needlework and Wool shop who was situated at 51 High Street from 1925 until after the Second World War. It was sent to a customer to advise that her order for ‘Silko’ had been received and was ready for collection.

Another trader who used the postcard to great effect in the late 1920s and 30s, was H.A. Harnett a butcher in London Road, near the library. Can you imagine the Health Authorities allowing meat to be sold in this manner today?

During the late 1970s, London Road also contained other well-known traders such as Mac Fisheries, and the well-loved Hansfords, which offered such a wide range of gentleman’s clothing.

As we look through the papers, books and magazines of the past, advertisements changed and appeared to have been produced for much shorter periods, because of the ever-changing prices of goods. Today there seems to be an urgency with advertising; ‘Sale now on’, or ‘Our prices are cheaper than our competitors’ Today’s television advertising is of course immediate but is not necessarily the choice for the local trader who is trying to combat our shopping style of moving to the out of town stores or shopping online.

BY KATE STEWART Ten years ago Paul and Holly Davis launched Skin Beautiful Skin & Laser Clinic which has now opened new premises in Felpham. The clinic offers a comprehensive range of skin, cryotherapy and massage treatments.

Paul was fascinated by laser technology and the ground-breaking advances that were being made a decade ago and he had laser treatment himself in the early 1990s to remove a tattoo. “It was changing peoples’ lives and I wanted to learn more,” says Paul.

Paul is qualifed up to degree level in aesthetic lasers and skin treatments and Holly is a highly trained massage therapist who has worked in luxury hotels and spas worldwide including the Caribbean and the Maldives. They are members of the BMLA (British Medical Laser Association).

RUSTINGTON HERITAGE PLATINUM JUBILEE WALK

BY SIMON BAKER IRONS June 2022 will feature many Platinum Jubilee Celebrations around the country, and I really wanted to capture this memorable celebration in a walk, so this month I feature a 4.2km (2.6 mi) interactive history trail around Rustington. The trail has been put together by the ‘Rustington Heritage Association’ and guides you to 14 locations across the town, each with fascinating facts about events that have occurred during the 70-year reign of Her Majesty the Queen.

A trail map can be picked up from the museum or downloaded from the Rustington Parish Council website which shows each featured location, where there will be an information board and a QR code that provides further information along with some historical fun facts. Taking a smartphone or tablet will help get the best of this walk. Also on each board is a hidden bonus letter that can be filled in on the trail leaflet and handed back into the museum to be entered into a prize draw. The Jubilee trail launched on Saturday 28th May 2022 and will be there until Saturday 11th June 2022.

The trail will take an hour or two to complete and can be started anywhere on the route, however I found it best to start at the museum where there is plenty of parking.

was partly filmed. Unfortunately, the lido was demolished in 1968 and subsequently the hotel in 1984.

• The route heads west along the seafront towards the beach shelter at the end of Sea Lane.

Enroute look out for the stone marker commemorating the world air speed records. The information boards here will talk about the extreme weather when the sea froze in the severe winter of 1963 and the great storm of 1987.

• The trail follows Sea Lane towards the town where further information boards will be found.

As you walk along Sea Lane keep an eye out for the blue plaques that feature some notable people.

• At the top end of Sea Lane can be found the church of St Peter and St Paul, built of flint with its tower and south arcade that date from C12, this is one of the few buildings remaining of old Rustington. Here the route heads towards town.

• A short detour along Woodlands Avenue leads to the memorial hall where a dance scene from the film ‘Wish You Were Here’ was filmed. The recreation field next to it was where many of the coronation celebrations took place.

• Retrace your steps back to the town centre, where further information boards can be found in The Street and Claigmar Road that feature information from the world’s largest hot cross bun to parades and bank raids.

The trail finishes where it started at the museum, which is certainly worth a visit to find out more about the local history of Rustington.

With its tapered white and black body perched on thin grey legs, black-capped head and slim, upwards-pointing black beak, the avocet is an elegant and delicate-looking bird. It is also a relative newcomer – or returner – to the coast of West Sussex, and it’s still a pretty scarce breeding bird in the county.

Avocets became extinct as breeding birds in Britain in the 19th century – they were over-hunted, their eggs taken for the table and their feathers for fishing flies – but they returned to breed in southern Britain in the 1940s, at Havergate Island and Minsmere in Suffolk, both still managed by the RSPB today. They benefited from the defensive wartime flooding of coastal areas in East Anglia and the simultaneous increase in undisturbed birds across the North Sea in the Netherlands.

The breeding population in the UK has grown from those initial eight or so pairs in Suffolk to around 2000 now. The avocet’s conservation success story has been an important part of the RSPB’s history ever Adult avocet kneeling to give chicks shelter under its wing. since, its image was first adopted for the organisation’s logo in 1955.

Avocets bred in Sussex for the first time in about 200 years in 1979, but have only bred in larger numbers more recently, most at Rye Harbour in East Sussex. However, the RSPB’s newly created reserve at Medmerry welcomed breeding avocets for the first time in 2014. Each summer the number of nesting birds has increased to over 20 here, but they’re still vulnerable to predators. To help protect them, the RSPB has put up fencing around the “Stilt Pools” and the island where you’ll be able to see them bringing up their chicks. Watch out for them launching their aggressive, missile-like attacks at passing gulls, crows and herons to defend their young. And you can’t miss their sharp, piping alarm calls overhead.

Avocets mainly feed on invertebrates, such as shrimp and other crustaceans, as well as worms, Adult avocet feeding in a shallow pool. either by picking them from the surface of water or mud or by sweeping those slender bills back and forth through the murky water. This side-to-side movement helps them find their food by touch in the loose sediments.

So, the next time you visit the RSPB reserves at Pagham Harbour or Medmerry, have a look at the logo on the sign. It features the black and white head and black curving beak of this rather lovely little bird, which holds a special place in the history of bird conservation in Britain.

LET’S HEAR IT FOR LOCAL RADIO

Sussex local radio station, V2 Radio, has a strong community ethos and a broad appeal to an audience passionate about local issues, news and events together with a mix of familiar music from the last five decades.

Programmes are presented by veterans of the broadcasting industry, already well known to listeners in Sussex, with a wealth of experience of providing radio services locally, nationally and internationally.

The station is the brainchild of Sussex local businessman, Justin Cottrell. In September 2020, Justin was listening to Spirit FM on his radio in the garage during Lockdown 2 on the fateful day that Spirit FM ‘the self-styled truly local radio station for West Sussex’ made its final broadcast.

Spirit FM had been serving its community since its launch in 1996, but in 2020 it was bought by a German company and rebranded as Greatest Hits Radio losing its local identity, says Justin.

Most of the Spirit FM presenters and staff lost their jobs. Justin, a self-confessed closet techie, grew up with Spirit FM and is passionate about local radio so he decided to act. “Having met the old team at Spirit FM and with the help of a successful crowdfunding appeal (where £16,120 was raised in 28 days), V2 radio was launched in December 2020 across all media platforms as a destination station for local news, travel information and entertainment,” says Justin.

Justin was delighted to welcome back many of the staff/presenters from Spirit FM and the new station has gone from strength to strength with a transmission reach from Hastings to the New Forest and an estimated 60,000 people tuning in every week.

Part of V2s mission statement is to raise funds from its earnings to help local causes.

These funds are held in a ‘community chest’ from which local charities and communities can apply for funding grants. “We are funded by advertising and 10% of all our earnings go into our Community Chest – so we really try to make a difference to our community in both an informative and financial way,” says Justin.

V2 is also keen to support national causes and recently promoted the bra recycling scheme set up by Against Breast Cancer. Justin was delighted when he was told that over 10,000 bras had been donated. In November 2021, V2 launched its inaugural Christmas Toy Appeal and this resulted in over 5000 new toy donations to local children’s charities including Chestnut Tree House.

The V2 Radio team also enjoy getting involved in local events, the arts and festivals, with regular outside broadcasts to support local businesses and charities – you may remember the beach clean on Felpham beach when the team was based at the Beachcroft Hotel. Justin adds: “Being a voice for the local community massively helps to connect people on a local level and prevents loneliness.”

The popularity of V2 has also been boosted by a regular afternoon slot presented by former BBC Radio DJ and Top Of The Pops presenter, Mike Read, as well as the station’s decision to play the National Anthem at midnight every night. Justin was keen to reignite this radio tradition especially with the approaching Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

BOGNOR WOODWORK AND CRAFT CLUB

The aim of Bognor Wood Work and Craft Club is to promote social inclusion for the public benefit by preventing people aged 18 or over, within Bognor Regis and the surrounding area, from becoming socially excluded, and helping them to integrate into society through the provision of facilities in which they can undertake creative, activities, learn or pass on skills and knowledge, and support each other socially.

The club has recently set up workshop facilities within Bognor Makerspace at 58-60 Longford Road Bognor Regis PO21 1AG. This workshop contains a large selection of hand tools covering most woodwork and other crafts. Other equipment includes Routers, Wood Lathe, Pillar Drill, Mitre Saw, Band Saw, Scroll Saw and other equipment is being regularly added.

We are also interested in acquiring tools and/or materials that are no longer required by builders or individuals.

Existing members have numerous skills and are only too willing to provide help and advice on any personal project.

Members also take on projects which will help the community and provide a source of income for the development of the club. Members are not required to participate in these activities but are welcome to attend for a cuppa and a chat.

The club is open from 10am until 1pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Anyone interested is welcome to pop in at these times. The club can also be contacted via email bwacc2022@gmail.com.

RASPBERRY SWISS ROLL Home-made Swiss rolls are so good, and surprisingly easy to make.

Preparation time – 30 mins, Cooking time – 10 to 30 mins, Serves – 6–8 INGREDIENTS 4 free-range eggs 115g caster sugar, plus extra to dust (you can also use icing sugar) ½ tsp vanilla bean paste

75g self-raising flour 200ml double cream 1 tsp vanilla extract 200g whole raspberries

For the raspberry jam: 150g caster sugar ½ lemon, zest, and juice 350g raspberries

METHOD • Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5 and line a 23x33cm/9x13in Swiss roll tin with greaseproof baking paper.

• Place the eggs, sugar and vanilla paste into a bowl and whisk together until pale, fluffy, and thickened to the consistency of double cream.

• Sieve the flour into the mixture and carefully fold it in preserving as much air as possible. Pour the mixture into the lined tin and spread it evenly with the spatula. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until just firm to the touch.

• Place a sheet of baking paper, slightly bigger than the tray, onto a work surface and dust with caster sugar. Turn the sponge out onto the paper, peel off the baking paper on the bottom of the sponge and set aside to cool a little.

• Pour the double cream and vanilla extract into a large bowl and whip to soft peaks.

• Make the jam – Heat a pan until hot.

Add the sugar, lemon zest and juice and cook for 3-4 minutes until the sugar has dissolved. Throw in the 350g of raspberries and cook for 3-5 minutes until they break down and thicken. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool.

• Spread the jam over the sponge, leaving a 2cm gap around the edge. Spread the whipped cream over the top of the jam, then sprinkle over the whole raspberries.

• Starting with the longest edge of the sponge and using the baking paper to help (but take care not to roll the paper inside the sponge!), roll the sponge up tightly, making sure the filling stays inside. Keep rolling until the sponge rolls off the baking paper. Dust with extra caster sugar or the icing sugar and cut into slices to serve.

INHERITANCE TAX You can’t have your cake and eat it!

When a person dies, in general terms Inheritance Tax is payable on the value of the assets comprised in their estate at the date of their death, together with the value of assets given away by them in the previous 7 years, if together the aggregate value is more than the available nil rate band (current maximum being £325,000 per person).

A lot of people conclude that to avoid paying Inheritance Tax all they have to do is gift the whole or even half of their house, bungalow or flat, to their son/daughter, live for 7 years and then that’s it, the value of their asset will be less than the nil rate band. Not so!

If you continue to live in your property after making the gift then this simple avoidance tactic is caught by the Gift with Reservation of Benefit Rules.

Property caught by these Rules is treated by HMRC as if it still forms part of the donor’s estate on their death, irrespective of the number of years that have passed since the date of the gift. It can give rise to the worst of circumstances in that Inheritance Tax still has to be paid on the value of the asset, but the beneficiaries lose any Capital Gains Tax advantages, such as the Tax Free Uplift on death.

GARDEN VIEW TRELLIS BY RACHEL LEVERTON Trellis is underutilised in most gardens, yet it has a myriad of uses. It can cover an ugly wall or screen an ugly garden building, and it can be used on one or more sides of a patio to provide privacy. You can use it as a framework to support plants but can also be a decorative feature in its own right.

Strategically placed trellis can make a garden appear more interesting. Counterintuitively it can also provide the illusion of greater space by interrupting the line of sight and making people curious so drawing them out into the garden to explore.

Most garden centres have a good range of functional and attractive trellis, readymade into units. If you can’t find exactly what you are looking for there are companies who will precision cut a specific design and size for you.

Obviously, you will pay more for the privilege, but you will get exactly what you want. In a small space where you might only need one piece it can be a worthwhile investment, because in a small garden any structure is more noticeable and becomes a visual statement.

If you plan to grow plants up your trellis then make sure the posts or wall that it is fixed to will support the weight of the trellis plus the full-grown plant.

It can be tempting to plant a variety of climbers, but a small space often benefits from bold planting using fewer varieties. Beware of using all deciduous plants because the structure will look bare in the winter.

• Vines such as Vitis coignetiae, which has large heart-shaped leaves and beautiful autumn colour are great for a large area. V. vinifera ‘Purpurea’ has very attractive leaves which as the name suggests are purple. It produces bunches of dark, tightly clustered grapes.

• Clematis are a good choice. C. montana is vigorous and might swamp a small trellis, but if you have the space they can be grown through other climbers and produce a fabulous summer display.

• Ivies are good for winter colour. Don’t think that all ivies are dark green. H. Helix ‘Goldheart’ has super attractive yellow leaves edged in bright green while H. helix ‘Chester’ has leaves with wide cream margins and is good for brightening up a gloomy area.

• Passion flowers look very exotic and are a particularly good choice for a trellis.

• Scented climbing roses are one of my favourite plants to grow up trellis which is screening a patio. I love ‘Compassion’, which has the most beautiful blooms in pink/apricot, and a strong, sweet fragrance. Prune every winter.

Remember to check trellis every year for broken or rotten supports and treat periodically with wood preservative to prolong its life and freshen its appearance.

CONSIDERING COUNSELLING?

BY SARAH JANE GALPIN We can all experience times in our life when we feel disconnected, stuck in a rut and holding on to negative emotions. We are often unaware of limiting beliefs which hold us back, and prevent us from reaching our true potential. Each person who comes to counselling needs to be listened to, to be thought about and to be heard and supported and yet within this confidential space each person requires something distinctive and personal.

It could be that the person is struggling with low self-esteem, anxiety, stress, or feeling generally overwhelmed. It might be about a relationship or a work- related issue. Sometimes, people seek counselling to better understand themselves. The pandemic has massively impacted our mental health and many people are seeking counselling for the first time in their lives.

Counselling is a place to reflect and make sense of difficult thoughts and emotions and to develop new perspectives and discover more helpful ways of coping and relating. Counselling can often be a unique and transformative experience.

There are many different types of counselling. In the psychodynamic approach the primary vehicle for change is the therapeutic relationship and though this a change in the client’s internal relationship to themselves. The trust between client and therapist is crucial to the process and it’s important to find a counsellor who you feel you can have a good therapeutic relationship with. It is very much about personal preference.

If you are struggling at the moment, there are a number of different routes to getting the support you need. You can ask your GP to refer you for counselling, but you can also search for a qualified counsellor on the BACP or UKCP directories. These counsellors are verified and they are required to work in accordance with ethical codes of practice.

Throughout their training counsellors are required to have counselling themselves. This is invaluable because they are able to experience what it if feels like to be the client.

When I meet a new potential client for the first time, I begin with being curious about what brings them to therapy and what they hope to get from it. I work where the relationship works.

The focus is always on the client – this is their journey and I feel so privileged to be part of it.

Inheritance Tax - ‘The Bank of Mum & Dad’

by Mark Riley, Founder & Managing Partner, MJR Solicitors Inheritance Tax Implications While the so-called ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ has previously been linked with parents helping their adult offspring to get on the property ladder, the rapidly increasing living costs, combined with the natural instinct of a parent to help, could see a dramatic increase in this kind of gift being offered to our children. But unfortunately donating lump sums of money in this way could come at a cost in terms of inheritance tax.

Expert advice should always be sought, to avoid potential inheritance tax implications.

How much is Inheritance Tax? The IHT rate is 40% on the value of your assets after any debts have been deducted, but there is a tax-free allowance we all get, called the NilRate Band (NRB), which means your beneficiaries can inherit up to £325,000 from your estate without having to pay tax on it.

On estates above the NRB, there is a standard 40% IHT rate. However, there is usually no IHT to be paid if: • your estate’s value is under the NRB threshold of £325,000 • everything over the threshold is left to your legal spouse or partner • everything over the threshold is left to an IHT tax-exempt beneficiary such as a charity But if you’re leaving property to a beneficiary who’s a family member, a Residence Nil-Rate Band (RNRB) might also apply. RNRB - This is an extra tax-free allowance that can also be used if you leave your main home, at the time of your death, to your lineal descendants (children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren). Each person potentially has a RNRB of £175,000, depending on the value of their home when they die and means that, when combined with the NRB, you could leave an estate up to the value of £500,000 IHT free.

The freeze on Inheritance Tax thresholds The £375,000 NRB on IHT has been the same since 2009 while the current £175,000 RNRB has crept up over the years in line with inflation. But at the 2021 budget, the Chancellor announced he would freeze the level at which people start

paying IHT for a further 5 years. This means the basic NRB will remain at £325,000 and the RNRB at £175,000 until 2026.

Before the beneficiaries receive their legacies, which in turn may be greatly reduced and with increased energy and food costs, the recent NI hikes, and rising inflation, there will be a growing number of families that might be adversely affected and struggle to pay.

The IHT freeze adds even more importance to your IHT planning. This is an ideal opportunity to review your estate and make sure as much of it goes to your intended beneficiaries instead of to the government.

IS SEMI-PERMANENT MAKEUP A TATTOO?

Hello, my name is Emma, and I am the founder of Emma Jade Beauty Ltd based in Middleton on Sea. I get so much joy knowing I’ve changed peoples’ lives through semi permanent makeup, whether that’s a confidence boost, a time saver, or a health complication that has caused hair loss ie alopecia, chemotherapy or trichotillomania, that I thought it would be a good idea to answer some frequently asked questions about all things semi permanent makeup (SPMU).

I want to put the horror stories aside and give you some inside information as I have spent the last five years investing, gaining knowledge and experience in this area and becoming the best SPMU Technician possible.

Firstly, the most common question is ‘IS THIS A TATTOO?’ I would answer by simply saying, yes it’s a form of tattoo. However, the pigment is deposited into the top layers of your lower epidermis / upper dermis where your skin naturally sheds (also known as desquamation) and not deposited into the lower dermis like a body tattoo. This isn’t the only reason that makes the treatment semi permanent, another reason is that we use in-organic products which are all natural and from the earth, this means that over time they break down within the skin. Unlike tattoo ink which is synthetically made for body tattoos. Within the treatment the skin is broken and you do go through a healing process which is usually around ten days.

This brings us onto our next commonly asked question ‘HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?’ This all depends on your skin and how well you look after your new semi permanent makeup treatment. The oilier your skin, the more regularly you’ll need a colour boost but you should still get a minimum of 12 months wear. The drier your skin is the longer the treatment tends to last. During covid times my clients were overdue for their top ups, however their treated area still looked intact and although overdue, the time in between wasn’t a problem when topping up!

Now the one you are probably all thinking is ‘DOES IT HURT?’ Although anaesthetic cream is used throughout your treatment you may feel some minor scratching, however this ‘should’ be bearable. If you have experienced unbearable discomfort in your treatment, this is usually down to an inexperienced technician rather than the actual treatment. 99% of my clients are shocked when we are finished and say ‘is that it, I thought it would hurt’.

I often do corrective work which over time has led me to a ‘less is more approach’ – it’s best to be conservative in this treatment as we can always ‘add’ but can’t take away. The treatments we currently offer in my salon are: Microblading Powder brows

A MUSEUM FOR ALL THE FAMILY

Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is situated in a corner of the old Tangmere airfield, famed as an RAF fighter station from 1918 until Fighter Command left in 1958.

The museum aims to promote public awareness of the United Kingdom’s military aviation heritage, educating present and future generations in military aviation. In September the museum will be hosting an exhibition to mark the 40th Anniversary of the founding of the Museum which serves as a memorial to airmen and airwomen who gave their lives in the service of this country.

The museum is now managed and run entirely by volunteers and in 2017 it was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

On May 1st we commemorated Falklands Day with pilots from that conflict coming to Tangmere Military Aviation Museum. The museum has in its aircraft inventory a Sea Harrier that took part in the conflict.

In a short service it was dedicated to Gordy Batt, who had flown the aircraft, but had died during the taking back of the Falkland Islands. Many other veterans were there, all of whom had a role to play in re-taking the Islands from the Argentinians. The museum’s Falklands The Batt family at Tangmere. exhibition began on April 2nd the museum and will run through until the end of August.

Beginning in September there will be an exhibition to mark the museum’s 40th Anniversary.

Pictures and video clips will tell the story of the growth of the museum from its very earliest days.

Now one of the UK’s leading aviation museums, it is home to an impressive display of historic aircraft with a unique collection of aviation memorabilia stretching from the First World War through to the Cold War. Amongst the many attractions, there are numerous interactive displays and aircraft cockpits and simulators for visitors to experience. Light refreshments may be purchased in the Museum’s acclaimed Cockpit Cafe. A museum with something for all members of the family to enjoy.

The Museum is host to visitors of all ages.

All the older visitors, and some of the younger ones, have something to say. And every day we have new stories. One lady saw a picture of her uncle on the wall, another visitor saw an aunt’s signature – she had been with the Air Transport Auxiliary. Yet another had witnessed Operation Manna in April 1945. This was an operation during which squadrons of Lancaster bombers and Mosquitos dropped 6,500 tonnes of food to the starving Dutch, all with the knowledge of Tangmere’s Phantom F4 – now dedicated to our late the Germans. We, at the Museum, have a story Chairman Group Captain David Baron OBE. He flew to tell because we must never forget what the this aircraft when a Flight Lieutenant in 6 Squadron. heroes of two World Wars and the Cold War did for us. Remember too, that in 2023 we have been flying for just 120 years.

Felpham Parish Council is launching a Heritage Trail …

As one of its Platinum Jubilee Celebrations it intends to have a total of seven Blue Plaques by the end of the year.

One for each decade of the Queens reign. Its website https://kwatson166.wixsite.com/my-site-fpc is currently under construction and feedback is welcome.

Use or lose the village shops …

Felpham business owners are seeking a tad more support. A decline in footfall coupled with the growing costs of running a local business is getting to be near on impossible. Village shops are having to cut staffing hours. Gaterell Butchers stated “within the last 22 years this year has been the most difficult”. Locals up & down the country complain about losing their local shops and in turn their villages but spend hundreds of pounds at the Superstores. Felpham Village post office (Est 1908) said “One thing we’ve been telling people is when you do a big shop, please leave something off the list and come and see us for it instead”. If everyone used the village for one extra item per week instead of buying everything online or from the big stores then our villages may continue to blossom.

Let there be light x 3 …

Between St Marys Church and the Felpham bypass there is a colourful footpath. It runs alongside a most impressive allotment. Unfortunately the three lights are not working so Felpham Parish Council are currently investigating the most cost effective and eco-friendly fix possible. In the meantime please take a day light stroll to witness the wonderful blooms on display.

WHICH PRESSURE WASHER SHOULD YOU BUY?

If you’ve been thinking about buying a pressure washer but aren’t sure where to start we have some tips. Pressure washer size is determined by the pressure it provides rather than the physical dimensions of the washer.

• Pressure Washer Size Guide: • Light duty: 100 bar / 1,500 PSI and below – use for cars, bikes, garden furniture, bins, and outdoor play equipment.

• Medium duty: 100-200 bar / 1,500-2,800 PSI – use for fences, lawnmowers, gutters, sheds, walls, decking, patios, and driveways.

• Heavy duty: 200+ bar / 2,800+ PSI – use if you have large, dirty walls, decking, patios, or a long driveway.

• Water Flow Rate (WFR) – The water flow rate is measured in litres per minute or hour. High WFR + high PSI provides very efficient cleaning and rinsing capability.

Water Butt Connectivity – A water butt connection will allow you to purchase a compatible accessory that will connect your pressure washer to your water butt. This means that you can use the rainwater collected in your water butt for pressure washing, which saves you money and is kinder to the environment.

Caution – Be careful with windows; especially old ones because the pressure might be too strong for the pane causing it to crack. Some pressure washers have adjustable pressure settings, and a lighter pressure setting may be suitable for cleaning windows but check the manufacturer’s instructions.

SHARING LIVES IN SUSSEX West Sussex County Council is helping to match vulnerable adults with approved carers who provide live-in support to help them live their lives to the fullest. More people are needed to become paid carers and join the county council’s Shared Lives scheme to welcome people into their lives. They include people like Stacey, who is just one of those to benefit from the council’s Shared Lives scheme.

Stacey joined the West Sussex Shared Lives Scheme after her dad was hospitalised and sadly passed away in April 2021. She was matched with Shared Lives carers Stefano and his wife, who were approved to join the scheme in September 2021. Stacey is able to live with the couple, who have provided invaluable care and support in a home environment.

Stacey said: “Shared Lives has really changed my life for the better as I now have people who care about me and want the best for me. It’s pretty much the perfect match, I think. I am learning cooking, shopping skills and money skills. I don’t actually know where I would be without Shared Lives.”

Stacey’s Shared Lives carer Stefano, and his wife, both have backgrounds in health and social care. However, this experience is not essential, as the Shared Lives scheme welcomes people who have a desire, commitment and drive to help people.

He said: “We have enjoyed our journey with the Shared Lives scheme so far and would recommend it to anyone who wishes to seek fulfilment in a caring role, from their own home, that really does make a difference to people’s lives.”

This time last year there was no such thing as Felpham Farmers Market but a year on the market has become a regular, welcome event, not just for villagers, but it is an event that attracts people from other local areas too.

I moved back to Felpham last year where I grew up, and saw there was a need for a community event to help make the village more vibrant which is how I came up with the idea of a Farmers Market. After all, so many other towns and villages have them, I felt that Felpham would really benefit from a regular market with fresh, local food and drink.

After all, where else can you buy so much wonderful fresh, local produce and more, whilst meeting friends, listening to music and helping the community and environment?

So please do join us for our Anniversary market, if you are a regular customer or haven’t been before, you will be assured of a friendly greeting and a lovely experience too!

We will have great food, including fresh local bread, fruit and veg, spring plants, fresh flowers, eggs, honey, apple juice, organic cheese, pies, cakes, olives, gin, refreshments, treats for humans and for our four legged friends and much, much more as well as music.

Come to meet old friends and make new ones while supporting the village, local businesses and caring for the environment. If you haven’t been before, now is the time to come and say hello and to see why everyone looks forward to the second Saturday of the month!

ROTARY CLUB For the first time, the three service clubs in Bognor Regis together with the Bognor Regis Town Council are organising a Family Community Day in Hotham Park on Saturday June 18th between 11am and 5pm.

The Rotary Club of Bognor Regis, the Bognor Regis Lions Club and the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham have been working in the local community for many years but on this occasion felt that they should work on bringing the community back together after the two frightening years of covid.

The event is named, “Summer in Hotham Park” and it will have something for all the family. Many craft and charity stalls have already been booked and there will be entertainment supplied by local groups on the bandstand. These performers include the Arabesque Dancers, the Arun A Cappella singers and the Fishbourne Mill Morris Dancers. There will also be performances by the local Coustics Guitar and Ukulele Group with the children being well catered for by a Punch and Judy show and other entertainment throughout the day.

Refreshments on offer will include a beer tent, tea, cakes and ice cream with sushi and grill wagons also on site. Please join us, entrance is free, come and enjoy the park and wander around this ideal family fun day setting.

We are also currently collecting for our Children’s Square Meal Project at the Coop in Pagham at the weekends. We are one of the selected Coop charities for this year, so please consider taking out a Coop membership and making us your selected charity. If you see us in Pagham then please come and say hello.

Monday 27th June – 1845 for 1930 hrs ‘FROM SE5A TO F35’ Presented by Wg Cdr Jim Schofield Jim is a highly accomplished pilot and he will be talking about the characteristics of some of the aircraft types he has flown, from WW1 – to the present day. He has flown over 100 types encompassing a century of front line fighters including: 1917 Bristol Fighter, SE5a, Spitfire, Mustang, Viggen, Jaguar, Harrier, Tornado, He was one of the first pilots to land an F-35 on a ship at night. He is a UK and US instructor, a display pilot evaluator, a Fellow of the RAeS, and a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots.

Jim will provide a fully illustrated talk on all the different planes and bring some of his many unique videos and photos to show the audience.

AirACES is an aviation talk society, providing its members with regular talks, given by experts in many different fields related to the world of aviation. School governors are volunteers who want to make a positive contribution to children’s education. The schools governing board is made up from different groups, including parents, teachers, support staff, representatives of the local authority and of the local community.

Church schools also have Foundation Governors who have a special interest in the Christian distinctiveness of the school.

What do governors do?

Governors play an important part in overseeing the running of the school in the interests of the community it serves. Individual governors have no power or responsibility. It is only the full governing body which has legal duties and powers. All governors share in that corporate responsibility. The day-to-day management of the school is the responsibility of the headteacher and staff. The values and vision for leading the school are shared between the governing body, headteacher and senior leadership team. Governors govern rather than manage as well as play a key role in developing the school vision, ethos, and strategic direction and in a Church school maintaining the Christian distinctiveness of the school.

School governors participate in supporting and appropriately challenging the school leadership so that the school provides the best possible outcome for children and they oversee the financial performance of the school, making sure its money is well spent.

What makes a good school governor?

The most effective governors are those who listen, think, ask questions, and believe in the importance of education. Those who can work with others and understand wide range of information and data yet have a willingness to learn and be prepared to give the time to doing the job well.

What qualifications do governors need?

There are no formal qualifications, either academic or otherwise, needed to become a school governor. The one essential requirement is an interest in, and commitment to, children’s learning and wellbeing. Governors must be over 18 and need an enhanced DBS. Foundation Governors are expected to bring to the governing body an informed regard for the Church nature of the foundation of the school, regardless of their background or current church attendance/non-attendance or affiliations. This is to ensure that its Christian ethos is preserved and developed, and the religious worship reflects the tradition of the Church of England.

There are many opportunities to undertake training with WSCC Governor Services now offering training in person or online during the day and evening sessions.

The core training will give you the necessary skills, tools, and knowledge to begin as a governor but there are plenty of opportunities to further your training into specialist areas or interests such as safeguarding, curriculum, inclusion, special educational needs and disabilities and disadvantaged pupils.

Church schools also benefit from additional training opportunities through the Diocese. These will cover safeguarding as well as provide a wide range of training and opportunities to support Church school governors in their roles and responsibilities.

The Quiet at the End of the World by Lauren James This novel is a deeply human story about a ‘soft apocalypse’ - what happens when humans stop being able to reproduce, and you have to slowly watch your entire species go extinct as you grow up?

Teenagers Lowrie and Shen are the youngest humans left on earth. In February 2024, the population of the world was infected with a virus that made them all infertile. The only humans conceived after this date were from eggs frozen at fertility clinics.

Now it’s 2109 and the population of the earth is so small that the last people have congregated in central London. They make a proxy family to protect Lowrie and Shen. The young people are taught the life skills on which they will depend when they are the last people left alone.

Alongside the remaining humans are robots working to protect the planet and the people, including lifeguard robot Mitch, who patrols the banks of the river Thames ready to save anyone in difficulty. It is Mitch who saves Lowrie and Shen when a helicopter crashes near where they are searching for treasure. The pilot had a seizure and crashed into Big Ben. Over the next few days, others start to have seizures fall unconscious, and Lowrie and Shen need to find a way to help them before they really are the only two people left on the planet.

The Quiet at the End of the World is a blend of philosophy and sci-fi. Woven through the plot is the story of Maya Waverley, told through old social media posts. Through Maya, Lowrie learns all about the past, the virus, the symptoms, and what happened to the world, and Maya.

Beautiful, melancholic, and hopeful - this is a book written for the times we live in. ‘The Quiet at the End of the World’ might restore your faith in humanity.

Gallant by V. E. Schwab Olivia Prior is an orphan, and the black sheep at Merilance School for Independent Girls. She has to deal with lessons and bullies and the fact that she cannot speak and no-one understands sign-language. She spends her free time drawing and studying her mother’s old journal, which is full of strange inkblot illustrations. The journal tracks her mother’s love affair with Olivia’s father, his mysterious death, and her own descent into madness. The journal closes with one final, desperate entry addressed to Olivia: “The shadows are not real. The dreams can never hurt you. And you will be safe as long as you stay away from Gallant.”

Then Olivia receives a letter from an uncle she’s never heard of, requesting that she goes to Gallant, which is the Prior family estate. At first she’s entranced by the colourful surroundings, and the kind staff, and even the house ghouls.

The only person who is hostile towards her is her cousin Matthew. Gallant is a place of secrets. Olivia is forbidden to leave the house at night and is strangely drawn to the crumbling wall at the edge of the garden, which holds back a menace that no one wants to talk about.

This is a multi-layered modern-day gothic novel. It has it all: a haunted house, a dark, forbidding atmosphere, a tragic love story, and a rebellious heroine desperate to find her place in the world. Schwab’s use of eerie imagery pairs with the illustrations to produce the magical feel of a novel which has the potential to become a classic.

ST MARY’S CHURCH

BY JOYCE PRITCHARD ON BEHALF OF FELPHAM VILLAGE CONSERVATION SOCIETY On the 2nd June 1953 the Felpham community celebrated the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II with a fete and pageant. The festivities commenced in the afternoon with a fete which was held in Summerley Playing Fields (now known as King George V Playing Fields).

The Pageant depicted what might have taken place had Queen Elizabeth I and her Court visited Felpham during her reign. In the late afternoon the proceedings commenced at Snooks Corner by the Town Crier then moved on to Summerley Playing Fields with traditional dance and songs of the period. Enter the Lord and Lady of the Manor and a further announcement by the Town Crier of the Queen’s Procession led by the Jester.

After the presentation of the Lord and Lady of the Manor to the Queen by the Earl of Essex a welcome address was given, followed by the Queen’s Speech and a Blessing of Queen Elizabeth II by Rev D Manners. The hymn Jerusalem, words by William Blake and music

by Parry, and God Save the Queen were sung by the assembly.

The Queen in her Christmas broadcast – 1952 declared: “At my Coronation next June I shall dedicate myself anew to your service.”

A copy of the above programme is being reproduced for the Society archives and contains the full Christmas broadcast, plus more details of the 1953 festivities, local advertisements, interesting facts, including Felpham Notes at that time.

Now as we did in 1953, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebration weekend is the perfect opportunity to bring us all together. Whatever you are doing during the weekend in Felpham it will be full of fun and whether you are having a small gathering in a garden, a park or driveway, or a larger party with tables in your street, it is a time to celebrate. However you decide to do yours, it is simply about sharing friendship and fun with neighbours and the local community.

The Felpham fete has been absent from our calendar for two years, but now the Felpham Village Conservation Society is delighted to welcome everyone to continue celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee on Saturday, 9th July at the FELPHAM JUBILEE SUMMER FETE Further details of the event can be seen within this magazine.

80 YEARS OF GROWING This year the Felpham and Middleton Horticultural Society will celebrate be a celebrating a very special 80th Anniversary.

The society was started to help people with vegetable growing in an era of need and it has continued with the same ethos although changing through the years to include a wider range of horticulture.

From the original one main Summer Show in June, the Society now also holds a Spring Show and Rose and Sweet Pea Show covering flower, pot plants, vegetables, floral art, photography, cookery and handicrafts. We also encourage our young future horticulturalists in our Spring and Flower and Produce Shows.

The Society is affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society, following its rules, and also to the Hampshire Federation of Horticultural Societies, Daffodil Society and National Sweet Pea Society. Speakers’ topics are diverse and often specialist plants are brought along for sale as well as our own members’ surplus. We end the year with our AGM in November followed by an American Supper.

We meet at 7.30pm in St Mary’s Centre, Felpham, PO22 7NU, on the 4th Thursday of the month from February to November excluding August. Visitors are most welcome for a small charge of £1 to include refreshments. Annual membership is only £6 per person!
