Hello, welcome to October’s magazine, the nights are certainly drawing in now & at the time of writing there is a definite nip of autumn in the air. Although turning chilly, this time of year can be so beautiful so have a look at this month’s article by the RSPB on page 42 for some suggestions of what to look out for as the evenings draw in.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is not a Mexican version of Halloween. The two annual events differ in traditions and tone. While Halloween is a dark night of terror and mischief, the Day of the Dead festivities honour deceased family members.

Revellers don amazing makeup and costumes, hold parades and parties, sing and dance, and make offerings to lost loved ones. It actually takes place over two days: November 1st and 2nd All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. Day of the Dead originated several thousand years ago with the Aztec, Toltec, and other Nahua people. These preHispanic cultures considered death to be one part of life’s long continuum. The dead were still members of the community, kept alive in memory and spirit, and during Día de los Muertos they temporarily returned to Earth. Over the years these traditions blended with Christian traditions.

At the centre of the celebration is an altar, or ‘ofrenda’, built in homes and cemeteries.

These are designed to welcome spirits back to the realm of the living. They are loaded with offerings: water to quench thirst after the long journey, food, family photos, and a candle for each dead relative. The altars are decorated with marigolds which are scattered in a pathway to the grave-site, to guide wandering souls back to their place of rest. The smoke from copal incense, made from tree resin, transmits praise and prayers and purifies the whole area.

In the 18th Century the term Calavera (which means 'skull') was used to describe short, humorous poems, often sarcastic tombstone epitaphs that poked fun at the living. In the early 20th century, Mexican political cartoonist and lithographer José Guadalupe Posada illustrated a calavera by drawing 'Death' dressed in fancy French clothes. It was a social commentary about the way Mexican society copied so-called European sophistication. He captioned it, “Todos somos calaveras,” which translates as, “We are all skeletons.” He meant that underneath all our manmade finery, we are

all the same. His stylised personification of Death was appropriated by the artist Diego Rivera in 1947, in his most famous piece of artwork - Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Almeda Park. He painted Death wearing a large feminine hat, and named her Catrina, slang for 'the rich'. She was adopted as a symbol of the day of the Dead and today this elegant skull is seen everywhere during the festival, especially in the beautiful makeup and costumes worn by revellers. People of all ages have their faces artfully painted to resemble skulls, and wear fancy suits and dresses.

Foods eaten included pan de muerto, or bread of the dead, which is a typical sweet bread containing anise seeds, and decorated with bones and skulls made from dough. There are also sugar skulls, in the style of the Catrina Calavera. These are part of a sugar art tradition brought by 17thcentury Italian missionaries. They can be incredibly beautiful and complex. To drink there is often pulque, a sweet fermented beverage made from agave sap, the same sap from which tequila is produced.

Thanks to recognition by UNESCO and the global sharing of information, Día de los Muertos is more popular than ever—in Mexico, and increasingly abroad. It's possible to find Day of the Dead celebrations in America and even in the UK. Last year there were festivals in London, Leeds, Bristol and Bournemouth. Look around your local area and see if anything is happening near you.

Local History ©S. Endacott As we move towards November and the 100th commemorations of the cessation of the 1st World War, we should remember Bognor’s own links to connections with the services over the years.

During the 1st World War the White & Thompson sheds were on the foreshore, in Middleton on Sea. for the building of seaplanes, the first workforce was recruited in 1910 and soon numbered 6. They were initially unsuccessful when they obtained the rights to the Curtis Flying Boat in 1914, but with the pending war this enterprise was to provide employment for many people in the vicinity, whilst the men went off to war. In 1915 a two‐seater biplane landplane was construct‐ ed. When 12 were ordered by the Admiralty they were nicknamed the ‘Bognor Bloater.’

Sadly, at the end of the war in 1918 Govern‐ Thompson seaplane ment contracts were withdrawn.

In Felpham there was the Royal Navy School of Photography. During the 2nd World War the Admiralty acquired several empty properties on the Summerley estate. Around the area of Second, Third, Fourth Ave., Limmer Lane with the Strand appearing to be the centre of the activity.

One home was occupied by 40 naval students.

The students attended a four month course during 1944 in which time they qualified and carried out air photography for Royal Navy use. Primarily the full courses were held at Cowdrey Park or RAF Ford. The students used an Avro Anson aircraft and took turns in going into the nose cone where the F24 Camera was mounted on a cradle for their use. Yes, we are primarily seaside resorts, but we have had own connection with the armed services and historical wartime activities.

This month - Lawn Love weather cools but you're too late for raking by now. Probably best to embrace the lush greenness: moss lawns are all the rage in Japan anyway. On the other hand, if the weather is still warm and the ground is dry, apply moss killers, rake it out, reseed and water. You’ll thank me next year.

There are times I threaten to astro-turf my entire garden, but then I remember the smell of freshly mown grass and how lovely it is to walk through the dew with the dogs in the morning, and I relent.

Of all garden tasks I find lawn-care the most tedious. I am not a lawn enthusiast, preferring plants. For me lawns are a necessary evil. I like sitting on them, walking on them, and they make my flowers look good, in much the way a frame enhances a picture. So, I feel I do have to give my lawn at least a little love and care.

By October lawn growth has slowed so you can raise your mowing height by at least one setting until mid-spring next year. If like mine your lawn sprouts moss the moment it rains, raise the mowing height even more so that at least 1 to 2cm of grass shows above the moss after grass-cutting.

Damp grass builds up inside the mower so give the mower a good brush, scrape or hose down after every use. This necessary housekeeping prolongs the life of your mower.

After the middle of October there is no point applying weed-killer, so if you haven't been diligent in weed control the only option will be hand-pulling them. I am rarely diligent about weed-killing, so you are in good company here!

Moss becomes more evident as the

October is the best time for aerating the lawn. I used a fork for years until I bought a hollow-tine aerator three years ago, and now I'm a convert. You can't overdo it, insert them every few inches until you’re fed-up. It’s a great work-out. The hollow tines pull out little cores that look like fat worms. Leave them in place to recycle the nutrients. Aerating improves drainage and allows air, nutrients and rain to move down to the roots rather than sitting at the surface. Normally by now there has been enough rain to allow the tines to penetrate the soil making the job easier but who knows what the crazy UK weather will be doing when this article is published.

It's best to fertilise the lawn after aerating if possible. This month is quite a good month for fertilising the lawn if you haven’t already got around to it. Not only does fertilisation give you a fantastic lawn ready for the winter but also offers some protection from the ravages of winter temperatures and diseases.

Make sure you collect fallen leaves weekly to discourage moss and disease.

I know some gardeners like to discourage leatherjackets and worm-activity but frankly I like watching starlings poke around for leather-jackets, and I like worms, they are my little garden friends, so if the odd worm cast is the price I must pay for their help then I'm happy to put up with them.

Piers, Trains and Lost Villages A 12.5km (8 mile) linear walk along the coast from Bognor Pier to Littlehampton’s West Pier.

A great walk to be had on a lovely sunny day arriving in time to see the sun set over the shimmering sands of West Beach.

Bognor Pier opened in 1865 and has been a significant icon for the town, in its heyday it would have entertained locals & tourists alike and during the war it served as a Royal Navy observation station nicknamed HMS Barbara. It was manned with anti aircraft guns that shot down a German bomber in February 1943. A memorial to this can be seen in front of the pier. Unfortunately in 1964 storms damaged the end of the pier causing the pavilion to collapse beyond repair.

Head east from the pier along the promenade and you’ll see a handful of traditional fishing boats and lobster pots ready for the next catch. Continue along the promenade to just past Butlins, where Longbrook can be explored, with exercise machines for toning up and the Aldingbourne Rife for the opportunity to spot some wild fowl. The eastern side of Longbrook has a memorial to a Hampden bomber that crashed here in 1942, it took off from Rutland to bomb Dortmund in Germany but for unknown reasons crashed on the way. Just behind the sea wall of Longbrook can be seen the railway bungalows, these carriages would have originally come from old rolling stock of the ‘London Brighton and South Coast Railway’ in 1918. The majority of carriages have been built around, however original features are still evident on some. Apparently the residents kept a dinghy under their carriages as the area frequently flooded.

Continue along the promenade to the end and take the short muddy track to the greensward at the end of Sea Lane. The breakwater known as Hannah’s Groyne marks the border between Felpham & Middleton and in 1795 was the site of a signal station built by order of the Admiralty to maintain a watch against potential French invasion, an ideal location that had great sight lines out to sea and along the coast, it was run by Royal Navy Lieutenants with staff of up to three men. The station along with Middleton church that was nearby have long been lost to the sea.

If the tide is out you can continue the walk along the sands otherwise a slight detour inland will be required before rejoining the beach near Elmer.

Walk along the path on top of the sea defence that is protecting the land behind, once known as Elmer Pool this area regularly flooded and was a fishery for eels.

Just past the large rock breakwater you’ll need to take extra care as the concrete sea defences have fallen away along with a large chunk of the farmers field due to coastal erosion. At low tide you can make out the flint wall and foundations of a building that stood in the field. Cudlow a small port in the Middle Ages and the hamlet of Isleham situated near here succumbed to the waves and were washed away in the 17th Century. A few cottages of Atherington remain and this hamlet would have been twice the size before it was also besieged by the sea.

The last part of the walk takes in the 30m high sand dunes of West Beach, one of only a few undeveloped coastal areas of sussex that has been designated as an area of special scientific interest as it has much wildlife including some rare sand lizards. West Pier is at the end of West Beach and marks the entrance to the River Arun.

Rob is very excited until a turn of events sees him a bit TOO close to the action!

This is a great little read, especially for children who are either interested in history, or who might need a little bit of help with their history homework!

A cute and seasonal supper

Serves: 4 Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 25 mins Ingredients 4 Orange peppers 200g Cooked brown rice 1 tbsp Sunflower oil 450g Minced beef or turkey 1 Medium onion finely chopped 225g Mixed mushrooms, chopped 350g jar roasted red pepper sauce 1 tsp Dried oregano ¼ tsp Chilli flakes Salt and pepper to taste Method For the pepper lanterns Preheat the oven to 180C / Gas Mark 4.

Use a sharp knife to slice the top off each pepper horizontally. Don’t discard these tops as they will be the little hats for the pepper lanterns. Deseed the peppers.

Rinse and pat dry with kitchen towel. Use a small paring knife to cut holes into the exterior of the peppers to make pumpkinlantern style faces. If the peppers don't

stand upright, slice a small amount from the bottom to flatten the surface.

Cook rice according to package directions.

Lightly oil a baking tray. Arrange the peppers and their tops on the tray and cook in the oven for 20 minutes, or until peppers are cooked, but still are still firm. They mustn’t collapse! Remove peppers from oven and allow to cool while you make the filling.

For the filling Heat 1 tbsp oil in large frying pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and mushrooms and sauté for 3-4 minutes, until the mushrooms have softened and reduced in size. Increase the heat to medium-high.

Add mince, herbs and chilli flakes and continue to cook, stirring occasionally until browned.

Drain the excess oil. Reduce heat to low, then add the pepper sauce and cooked rice. Stir to combine and cook for 2-3 more minutes, or until mixture is heated through.

Fill each pepper to the brim, allow the mixture to spill over slightly. Place a top on to each stuffed pepper and serve with green salad.

 Live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) – This is a nasal spray and is licensed for children and young people from 2 years old to less than 18 years of age

RSPB Pagham Harbour & Medmerry A different kind of beauty There is a nip in the air and you may be finding, like the autumn sun, you struggle to rise in the morning.

However, if you do you will be rewarded with the sight of jewels glistening in the sunshine – dew drops on spiders’ webs catching the early rays. This is the time of year many of our spiders become most conspicuous and the classic circular webs of orb web spiders look almost perfect glinting in the damp vegetation. Most orb weavers spin a new web each night after eating the remnants of the old web. Is it just coincidence they appear more numerous as we approach Halloween?

Meanwhile there are bodies emerging from the ground. Fungi. Throughout the rest of the year, the main part of fungi, known as the mycelium, remains hidden, living underground. It is vital to the health of woodland recycling nutrients needed for plants to survive. Now however, the fungi reveals itself as the fruiting body we recognise, ripening and releasing their microscopic seeds, known as spores, into the air to disperse and start a new generation. Fungi come in all shapes, sizes and even colours but beware, many are poisonous and best left admired but untouched.

The leaves are turning and acorns litter the ground beneath the oaks. With the majority of our summer visitors having left for warmer climes, our woods and fields have fallen hauntingly silent. Our resident birds, feed up on nuts, seeds and fruit, some stashing secret larders in preparation for leaner times ahead and many will return to garden feeders to take advantage of our goodwill. October is a good time to be putting up new nest boxes and cleaning out old ones, as some birds will use them to roost in during the long cold winter nights.

As darkness falls, fingers of mist creep out of the shadows and the hoot of an owl cuts eerily through the still night. This is likely to be a male tawny owl setting up territory in preparation for the breeding season later in winter. The classic ‘tu-whit, to-whoo’ is actually two owls responding to each other. The sharp and more accurately, ‘kee-wick’, is typically the female, while the familiar long wavering ‘hooo-hoo-hooo’ hoot belongs to the male.

This month of transition may feel strange, spooky even, but it also gives the countryside an ethereal beauty well worth getting up for and spectacular sunsets worth lingering in the twilight for.

A new milestone for Bognor’s 10K Prom Race.

Bognor residents and the 2000 runners of the Bognor 10k Prom Race may not notice too much of a difference but an epic milestone was reached on Tuesday 14th August when organisation of Bognor’s 10K race previously managed by the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham was signed over by the Rotary Club to running club ToneZone in a unique cooperation agreement.

With the support of the Rotary Club and other friends, the 1st Bognor Prom 10K Race became a reality in 1994 with approximately 400 entrants.

Since then the event has grown to become a premier sporting event in Bognor Regis attracting nearly 2000 entrants from running clubs, local people and many other individuals throughout the south coast.

Over the years organising the event has become more complex and time consuming for the limited resources of the Rotary Club and its members.

Several years ago the Rotary Club began negotiations with the Tone Zone Runners Club with a membership of over 200 runners, based in Felpham.

Now, with the 2018 Race a great success, more entrants than ever, and both clubs satisfied with the arrangements, the final partnership agreement was signed on Tuesday 14th August enabling ToneZone to continue organising the race, and The Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham to manage the finances.

Felpham Allotments and Downview Primary School teamed up this year to enable their younger children to visit the allotments and experience learning about where fruit and vegetables really come from.

They learned about different seeds and planted their own seed potatoes, onion sets and various seedlings which they were encouraged to take home to grow themselves. They sampled the first of the summer strawberries and even learned about edible flowers.

Almost 200 children visited the allotments in small groups with their teachers and helpers; it is fair to say that the helpers were learning too.

The children enjoyed the large open space of the allotments, asked the plot holders ques ons and even helped with the plan ng. It was a real pleasure for the allotment as‐ socia on to see the children and to realize how much they were learning from the visits.

It was not just about seeds and plants, we have many slow worms hiding away; one class even saw a frog. It was great fun for them to explore finding other wildlife around the site.

It seems that for most of the children delving into the manure to see all the worms working away was one of the highlights.

The three children in the picture won the colouring compe on, there were some beau ful pictures of the allotments and all the children are winners of course.

Isabelle, Harvey and Anastasia each won a £10.00 voucher and have the pleasure of seeing their lovely pictures which have since been made into fabulous li le cards, thanks to help of JBS Print and Design.

Some of the groups used seedlings we had prepared for them; we were also given lovely plants from the Chichester Wyevale Garden Centre.

Coming to the allotments is now a part of the school’s curriculum and we look forward to welcoming them in the future.

I'm a keen amateur photographer but I always failed at firework photography until last year when I decided to get serious. I've put together this short guide.

Kit: camera, torch, tripod, charged battery (and spare), decent memory card, shutter release.

Location: Get to any display early, before the crowds to choose the right spot. You want somewhere which avoids obstacles such as buildings or trees, street lights, car lights, and bright signs.

Wind: Stand upwind of the fireworks (wind blowing away from you). If you're downwind smoke will probably block most of your shots!

Settings: I've finally mastered this! If you have a camera you can set to manual: Turn the flash off; Turn noise reduction on; Set

ISO 100; Set Aperture to F11; Focus for landscape (slightly less than infinity some cameras have a landscape setting); shutter speed - you need to experiment to find your preference - try everything from 1-15 seconds (NB. this is why you need the tripod and shutterrelease cable, to avoid blurry photos) If you only have an automatic (point-andshoot) camera: Look for a firework setting.

If you don't have one, try the landscape setting and experiment. I found clicking as soon as I heard the 'whoosh' of the firework being launched meant I caught the firework more often than not.

Experiment: Try different settings, different shutter speeds and focal lengths. Use the torch to check and adjust settings. Enjoy the process and don't forget to share your photos!

Fun on the prom 2018 We are pleased to report Crowds of Fun and Sun as well as masses of attractions and great feed back. The Parish Council would particularly wish to echo the Chairman’s appreciation of the generosity shown by the Beach hut owners who accommodate this event annually and enable Felpham to have a great time.

The Kite Festival This enjoyable three day festival was truly welcomed by Felpham.

The organisers are keen to return in 2019.

Felpham Community Hall The suite of halls on offer continues as a choice venue for an increasing number of hirers and users of these excellent facilities. Residents of all ages are enjoying sport and leisure, Early Education and much more. Check our web site and social media for available facilities information and what’s on.

Consideration is now being given to install sound proofing items to enhance the potential of this excellent social space.

Family Memorials Many enquiries are received from residents who wish to have a functional memorial for their loved ones. We would like to invite enquiries from those who may wish to purchase and plant a tree in the parish.

Trees often need replacing and therefore a replacement programme is in place which combines this opportunity for local families to remember and honour their loved ones in this special way.

Emergency Resilience We are pleased to report that Community Resilience initiatives have now been taken up across Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire. This will enable the best and critical use of Emergency Services whilst creating sensible self-sufficiency in communities during any unplanned Emergency Situations.

Felpham Emergency Response Group Coordinators (FERG) which was the initial pilot is regularly invited to share its know how with wider audiences.

Emergency Resilience Planning requires us to continue to recruit and train volunteer helpers in Felpham to ensure that there will always be capacity to respond in any emergency situation. Residents are invited to join this initiative. We are looking to develop a multi skilled capability so whether you are a good communicator or a practical wiz we need you. Please continue to keep the offers coming in. Table top Exercises and other training will be held after the holiday season.

The next table top exercise will take place on Thursday 11th October at 6.30 p.m. at Felpham Community Hall.

Free service in your community on hospital discharge Do you know someone who might benefit from free practical support and companionship after being discharged from hospital? Age UK West Sussex provides such support within your community. They have trained coordinators who can visit clients at home when they first come home from hospital. They can talk through services available and also introduce them to a volunteer. Volunteers can visit once a week for up to six weeks providing much needed social and emotional support. This includes simply chatting and taking an interest in the person’s life and helping to motivate and encourage them as they recover from their illness or accident. The Bognor Regis Local History Society meets on a Monday evening from 7.30 at The Hub Community Centre, 73 Queensway, and Bognor Regis. (At the junc on with Canada Grove, Bognor Regis. Visitors are always welcome at £3 each. On Monday 8th October the Society guest speaker is Andy Thomas who will talk about The Story of English Freedom. Our speaker for the month of October is Alan Cooke. Alan is a qualified Magnet Therapist. Over the past couple of years he has been doing extensive research on the issues being caused by the 'silent infiltrators' in our home. His talk will take place at Yapton Village Hall, 2pm on Wednesday 10th October.
