Dear All, It’s November already and I hope that amidst the negative news you can all find some positives to keep you going. It is crucial at times like this not to let world events overwhelm your every day and find a few personal moments of joy and happiness to be centre stage. A delicious lunch, a big bear hug, a holiday memory, a thoughtful gesture, an act of kindess – the simple but beautiful things will keep us going. One thing for sure is that we live in an incredible place where the autumn colours are brightening the landscape and multi-coloured sunsets are lighting up our giant, West Sussex skies. We have space to breathe, and if we can make time to be outside and take in our surroundings daily this will help us when times are tough. Just one 15-minute walk a day can help you to keep your mind strong and positive. Helping others is also another way to keep things in perspective. It helps us to focus on what we can give and not what we have personally lost, at the same time boosting feel-good chemicals in the brain. It’s not going to be easy these next few months but if we can all take the small wins, I’m convinced it will help keep happiness at the forefront of our minds and push back the gloom and doom.

WHEN BRITAIN DECLARED WAR ON GERMANY ...

It is August 1939 – a photograph is taken of The Fox, Felpham. What a momentous time it is. Within a few days of this photograph, on 1 September 1939, Germany invades Poland and, two days later, on 3 September 1939, the British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain broadcasts that: “This country is at war with Germany”. Marian, a child on holiday in Felpham, recalls that time.

“I was with my parents, staying at a house in Bereweeke Road; we came to Felpham from London every summer, like so many families. We loved Felpham: I still do.

“I remember my father telling me that the country was at war and that we needed to go home to London. A Norwegian au pair called Aino was staying with us; my cousin had been there, too, but had already gone home. Aino’s family naturally wanted her to return to Norway and suggested to my parents that I go too, but my father decided that we should stay together as a family in England.

That was the right call as, the following year, Norway was invaded

by Germany.

“I remember there had been talk of war before September and preparations were being made in case of bombing or an invasion.”

What especially do you recall about preparations in Felpham?

“I remember barbed wire being put up along the beach in Felpham. There was not a sea wall or promenade in those days, just sand, some shingle, and a bit of a low-level cliff. My father told me that the barbed wire was to try and prevent German troops from invading England from the sea.

“I also remember that we had to get blackout material for the windows of the house in Bereweeke Road; I think it was made of paper, but it was definitely black. We went to a shop in Waterloo Road for this, opposite The Fox, in the building that later became the Malthouse restaurant. It seemed like two shops; there were certainly two doorways. Mr Mills was in one side and Mrs Mills in the other. Mr Mills sat on a stool behind a counter. My parents used to say that he sold everything! Anyway, that’s where the blackout material came from – he had masses of it there. I seem to think that Mrs Mills had some grocery provisions on ‘her side”.

Were you sorry to go back to London rather than stay in Felpham?

“At the time, I just wanted to remain with my parents wherever they were. In retrospect, it was probably safer in Felpham than London as the roof was blown off our house in London by a bomb blast. However, very luckily, no-one was hurt. Later, like so many children in London, I was evacuated: my best friend and I went to Anglesey.”

Do you know what became of Aino?

“My father tried to contact her family on more than one occasion but, sadly, we never heard back.

Communications were a lot less easy in those days. I hope she survived. So very many people did not which is why I take Remembrance Sunday seriously and am thankful still, after all these years, for my freedom and for that of my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. One never forgets a war.”

Tenants In Common Vs Joint Tenants With the current housing market like it is, it can take a minor miracle for couples or partners who are first-time buyers to get a foot on the housing ladder. But that daunting prospect can be much worse for people struggling to meet the almost impossible task of saving for a deposit. That’s why many prospective homeowners willingly seek to buy their first house or flat with another person – their partner or a friend or relative – pool their deposit money towards a bigger mortgage, and share the responsibility of making the monthly repayments. But who owns the house?

Owning a property can be confusing, opening up a tenants in common vs joint tenants conundrum. We can provide expert advice about tenants in common vs joint tenants, where you stand, and who owns what.

What is Joint Tenancy?

Under a joint tenancy agreement, 100% property ownership is split evenly between two parties or more. As the most common way to do home ownership, joint tenancy has plenty of benefits, but some risks as well. For example, it doesn’t allow for an unequal split in ownership, house sale proceeds are split evenly, even if one party contributes less, and there are a lack of property inheritance rights for benefactors.

The financial risk is spread and it can help reduce inheritance tax and care fees. However, a Deed of Trust can add expense, and you’ll need a Will to clarify who your share goes to.

THEY HAD NO CHOICE

BY KIM LESLIE Remembrance Sunday rightly focuses on human loss and sacrifice, on the thousands of soldiers, sailors and airmen who gave their lives for their country. But what of the animals – even birds – in military service? These lesser-known heroes have played their own very special part in warfare – and they haven’t been forgotten.

Wartime pigeons are remembered in West Sussex. At Worthing, the Warrior Birds Memorial in Beach House Gardens commemorates the National Pigeon Service of the Second World War when thousands of homing pigeons were used by the allies to carry top-secret messages across enemy lines. Radio communication would have been too dangerous. Again in West Sussex, an unusual blue plaque on Haywards Heath’s Broadway commemorates a local-born pigeon called Commando who flew more than ninety perilous missions carrying messages from British spies in and out of Nazioccupied France at the height of the war. He was awarded the Dickin Medal for Gallantry, the animal equivalent to the Victoria Cross. Pigeons like Commando saved thousands of lives.

Dogs, too, have long played their vital part in military life as guards, trackers, messengers, sniffers searching for mines and explosives and even as ratters in the vermin-infested trenches. Yet another, but much more symbolic, role has been that of military mascot. Zeke (1941-43) was the beloved mascot of the Toronto Scottish Regiment stationed at Petworth ready for D-Day. His grave, emblazoned with the regimental badge, sits secretly in woodland east of the town near the Gog and Magog Lodges. Lately, through Facebook, Zeke has become almost a minor celebrity, his little grave a place of pilgrimage where flowers are left and memories stirred.

The British Army was far from mechanised during the First World War. Motor vehicles were still much in their infancy, accounting for a fraction of the required haulage power. Horses were crucial, far easier to move over rough, pock-marked terrain mired in mud, but there were too few, just 25,000. Another 115,000 were needed at least. The source? A compulsory round-up of horses across the country, from farms in the countryside to street traffic in the towns. One ingenious farmer in Horley, lost without his horse for ploughing, made do with an elephant from a local circus! Just two days after war was declared in 1914, War Office officials descended on Chichester to collect horses at the Cattle Market, taking them from the stables of private residents and from tradesmen and local farmers. The next day it was Bognor’s turn, about fifty horses rounded-up for inspection in Waterloo Square. Drivers of vehicles were stopped and had their horses taken away. A number were reported, rather bizarrely, ‘standing about in the vicinity of the Pier minus the means of locomotion’. War waited for no man.

Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse relates the whole sad story: where Joey was taken from his peaceful Devon farm to face the horrors of war: shelling, barbed wire and gas. Gas masks were made for the horses on the front line. Equally murderous was the treacherous mud. ‘It was the mud that was killing us one by one’ says Joey. But whatever the horrors, whatever the sacrifice, he and others like him had to serve. ‘No horse, no guns. No horse, no ammunition. No horse, no cavalry. No horse, no ambulances. No horse, no water for the troops at the front.’ Joey joyfully returned home after the war, but thousands didn’t make it, so many left to be shot or sold for butchers’ meat. Their duty done, they were cast off as useless.

More recently, but only in this century, their crucial role has at last been acknowledged. The first national memorial dedicated to millions of UK, Commonwealth and Allied horses serving in the First World War was unveiled at Ascot in 2018, signifying the last time these animals were used on a mass scale in modern warfare. Earlier, in 2004, the Animals in War Memorial was unveiled in London’s Hyde Park, a powerful and moving tribute to all animals that served and died alongside British and Allied forces in wars and campaigns throughout time: ‘From the pigeon to the elephant they all played a vital role in every region of the world in the cause of human freedom’. So reads one of its inscriptions. A briefer line simply reads:

AN AIRFIELD As we drive along Chalcraft Lane it is inconceivable to think that between 1942 and 1944 there was a major airfield situated there. It was here that locals saw trees being felled, ground being levelled and anti-tank ditches being filled in. It must have been exciting for children to see what was occurring.

After the Battle of Britain plans commenced for the invasion of occupied France and it became apparent that more airfields were required than those operated by the RAF. The plans came under the title of Operation Hadrian and initial plans were for 82 Advanced Landing Grounds, in the South of England.

Ultimately only 26 were constructed, of which 7 were in Sussex, and these were actually satellite stations from Tangmere airfield. The initial specification for the required work was £20,500. The work was completed and the first planes arrived, as planned, on the 1st June 1943.

This Advanced Landing Ground (A.L.G.) was situated north of Chalcraft Lane and also crossed the Lower Bognor Road at Lagness. Operational from June 1943 until August 1945 it was used by approximately 100 aircraft from 2nd Tactical Force which consisted of 5 squadrons with up to 2,000 personnel preceding D-Day. Many of the men were from the Norwegian 331 Squadron that had been formed after many of the personnel had arrived in the UK from Norway and because of this on 25 April 1944 His Royal Highness Crown Prince Olav of Norway visited the men and stayed on the camp overnight.

THE POIGNANT POPPY BY NICKY GRAY Why do we wear the poppy? - Scarlet poppies grow wild all over western Europe wherever the soil has been disturbed. The battles of the First World War churned up such vast areas of earth that millions of poppies germinated and bloomed, often around the bodies of the fallen soldiers.

A Canadian surgeon called John McRae wrote the poem, In Flanders Fields, which many of us study in school. The poem is a haunting memorial to those soldiers who have died in any war and the imagery of the poppies is used to symbolise the deaths of those who fought.

Why do we hold a two-minute silence? On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month the guns of World War I fell silent. Four years of fighting and devastation finally ended. The following year ceremonies of remembrance took place on what was known as Armistice Day. An armistice is an agreement for the cessation of active hostilities between two sides in a war.

An Australian journalist, Edward George Honey first proposed a respectful silence to remember the dead. He wrote a letter to the London Evening News which was brought to the attention of King George V. The king issued a proclamation which called for a two-minute silence.

These days Armistice Day is more usually known as Remembrance Sunday and is a chance to honour the fallen soldiers of all conflicts.

In the light of the atrocities going on in Ukraine this year, I hope you’ll think even more about your poppy and all it stands for.

HEAT THE PERSON, NOT THE HOME

There’s no escaping it, most of us will be mindful of the energy price hikes and be thinking of ways to cut back on our heating. One of those ways is to wrap up well – even when sitting at home. Now I’m not going to be advising you to buy a fluffy onesie, Oodie, Slanket, or whatever else they come up with – this is a style blog after all! These have their place, but I’m talking about when you’re maybe working from home and want to still look and feel put together, or perhaps having a friend over for coffee – you get the idea.

So here are some tips for cosying up and still looking stylish …

Smart Knitwear – This autumn there’s such a range of gorgeous jumpers and cardigans so you’re spoilt for choice.

One tip is to size up in at least one sweater or cardigan so you can layer it over another finer knit for extra warmth. I love the bold red of this chunky longline cardigan from Sosandar. And this navy ribbed knit from Ted Baker brings warmth, but still looks smart.

I’m not gonna lie – I love a vest! As in an old-school proper vest you wear under your clothes not the current trendy tank style (see next tip). The trick with layering for warmth is to start close to the body and fill any gaps so you don’t get drafts! Look for something fairly fitted so you’re able to tuck neatly, and not add bulk.

Trendy Tanks (or vests) … Basically, a sleeveless layer you can put over a shirt or jumper. These are great for adding a bit of colour or go for a classic neutral shade that will work with most of your wardrobe. I love this simple natural knitted tank from sustainable brand Baukjen, and the hot pink number from Mint Velvet ticks the colour block trend too.

Wrist warmers – ideal for when you still need to be able to work, and don’t want to look like something out of a Dickensian novel in fingerless gloves hovering over a single candle! Wrist warmers in boutique Scarves – a scarf might not be our first thought when sitting indoors, but they can really help to keep you warm, especially if you’re sitting still for periods of time. REMEMBERING RAF TANGMERE BY SIMON BAKER IRONS Being November and a month for remembrance I thought it very poignant to feature a 5 mile walk around Oving, Tangmere and the former airfield that was famed for being an RAF fighter station from 1918 to 1958.

The 13th century church of St Andrews is situated central to the village of Oving and is the start of this month’s walk. The flint church with a wooden shingle spire stands high above the surrounding flat countryside. Opposite the church is the old school which was in use from 1839 to 1967.

From the church head north and follow the tranquil lane for approximately one mile as it winds along the edge of fields that once was RAF Tangmere. At the end of the lane, you can access the southern edge of the airfield and walk on the runway that saw many fighter planes take off for action.

The walk continues around the perimeter of the airfield alongside the enormous greenhouses that are used to grow sweet peppers and aubergines.

At the northern end of the airfield more evidence of the vastness of the runways can be seen and the old control tower can be found, unfortunately this listed building is in a poor state of repair but was instrumental in the success of the Battle of Britain. Just past the control tower on the right is a memorial to a damaged Halifax Bomber that crashed into a hangar when returning from a raid over Germany.

Follow the perimeter of the airfield to the Tangmere Aviation Museum. A visit to the museum is very worthwhile and a great way for the whole family to learn more about Tangmere’s important role in the war, you can also get up close to fighter planes from WW1 through to the cold war era.

A short walk along Tangmere Street will take you to Tangmere Cottage which was situated at the entrance to the airfield. The cottage now a private residence served as a wartime operations room during WW2.

Head back and turn right into Chestnut Walk and at the end of the lane take the footpath that leads to St Andrews Church. Many war graves and a stained-glass window designed to commemorate the pilots of WW2 can be seen here. The Yew tree in the churchyard is said to be older than the church itself.

Walk back to the main road and museum along Church Lane, then join the public bridleway near to the entrance of the museum and head out across the fields that once formed part of the east runway of the airfield, Spitfires are often seen flying over as they take off from Goodwood.

The bridleway soon meets Church Lane in Oving, turn right and head to Gribble Lane where the ‘Gribble Inn’ can be found. A 16th Century cottage that was converted into a pub for the parishioners of Oving, named after a local schoolteacher Rose Gribble, who previously lived there.

It has its own brewery and is ideal place to stop for some refreshments before the short walk back to the Church.

WEST SUSSEX BUS PASS

While it’s true that not many things in life are free these days, one thing that does remain free is the senior person’s bus pass. And if you tell us your views on bus travel this autumn, you could be in with the chance of winning £100 of supermarket vouchers*.

The free bus pass is available to all state pensioners (currently age 66 and above) and it means you can travel off-peak on local buses anywhere in England as far, and as often, as you like.

Not only does using a bus pass save you on car costs and parking charges, but it’s also a greener way to travel, something which Jaki, from Petworth, appreciates. She said: “Using my bus pass has many benefits. I still work twice a week and the free bus pass saves me money on car parking costs, petrol, plus wear and tear on my car. THE EAGLE HAS LANDED

BY ROB YARHAM (Volunteer Coordinator and Guide) If you go out for a walk today, you may be in for a big surprise. These days, we’re starting to see more white-tailed eagles over our RSPB reserves along the coast, and further inland in West Sussex. And that’s thanks to the Isle of Wight White-tailed Eagle Project.

Each summer since 2019, a group of young eagles has been collected under licence from nests in Scotland and translocated to the Isle of Wight, where they’re released when they’re ready to fledge.

This method of release ensures they stay fairly faithful to the area throughout their life. The aim of the reintroduction programme – which is being run by a partnership between Forestry England, the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation and other conservation and stakeholder bodies – is to release a total of 60 young white-tailed eagles over five years and establish an initial population of six to eight breeding pairs on the Isle of Wight and surrounding areas on the South coast of England.

But why here, you might ask?

Don’t these eagles belong instead to the rugged northern coasts of Scotland and Scandinavia?

Well, from historical accounts, archaeology and palaeontology, we know they were here in southern England until the last birds bred, The wingspan of an adult white-tailed eagle can reach 2.5m (8ft).

Thanks to the Isle of Wight reintroduction programme these birds on Culver Cliff on the Isle of Wight, may soon be a regular sight over Sussex. in 1780, and young white-tailed eagles were still visiting Sussex in the early 19th century. Even local place names provide evidence they were here – the village of Earnley which sits next to the RSPB Medmerry reserve is named after them. ‘Erne’ is the Old English for ‘eagle’ (and ‘ley’ means ‘clearing’). And successful and growing populations in France, Denmark and the Netherlands show that there is plenty for them to eat – mainly fish and water birds – on similar lowland landscapes and coastlines to ours. Young eagles roam far and wide, but several of the released birds seem to be staying in the region, including settling on the Isle of Wight, in Sussex and in Dorset as well.

The eagles will take about five years to reach sexual maturity, when they will also acquire their full adult plumage – which includes the white tail of their names, together with a white head and a bright yellow beak – but then, you never know, perhaps before the end of this decade, we may even see breeding white-tailed eagles here in Sussex! It would certainly be wonderful to see these magnificent birds regularly in our skies again, back where they belong.

FOOTBALL CRAZY BY NICKY GRAY GET YOUR WORLD CUP FOOTIE FACT HERE It can’t have escaped your notice that we are in the midst of the World Cup Fever! So here are a few World Cup facts for footie novices and experts alike.

The first World Cup took place back in 1930. Jules Rimet, a French football administrator who was the third and longest serving President of FIFA, wanted to create an international competition between men’s football teams. The first World Cup tournament consisted of thirteen invited teams and took place in Uruguay, who won the competition.

The World Cup has been played every four years since this inaugural tournament except in 1942 and 1946 when it was suspended because of World War II. Hence, it has been held 21 times and 2022 will coincidentally be the 22nd World cup.

In 2018 Russia automatically qualified as the host country, with the remaining 210 nations competing for the remaining 31 places during 872 matches. Following the international condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Russians were banned from the 2022 World Cup. Their scheduled opponents in the playoffs at the time of the ban were Poland, who were given a bye through to the final — where they beat Sweden to book their ticket to Qatar 2022.

The Russian football authorities did appeal the decision, but their case was thrown out by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Brazil has won the most World Cups with five, while Italy and Germany are close behind with four each.

The World Cup is usually held in June and July but the host this year is Qatar. The subtropical desert climate there results in extremely hot summers, with highs averaging between 27-32 degrees.

As the temperature often exceeds these averages, the authorities felt it would be too dangerous to play soccer. So as part of their winning bid for hosting the World Cup, Qatar agreed to stage the tournament in November and December, where typical temperatures are a more comfortable 21-26 degrees.

The winning team is awarded the World Cup Trophy. Although the team gets to enjoy celebrating and being photographed with the trophy after the final, they don’t get to take it away with them. They are sent home with a replica. The current Jules Rimet trophy has been presented to winning teams since 1970. It is made of 18-carat gold and weighs in at 13.5 pounds (just over 6Kg). At the inception of the tournament in 1930, FIFA decided that if any nation won three finals, they would be given the trophy to keep. In 1970 Brazil achieved this feat when they defeated Italy in the final in Mexico, so the trophy was presented to the Brazilian Sports Confederation. It was placed on display on the third floor of the CBF offices in Rio. 13 years later on the night of 19th of December, the security guard was overpowered by a group of thieves and the trophy disappeared. It has never been found.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar kicks off on Sunday 20 November.

I’LL DO IT LATER! BY TRACEY ANDERSON

HOW TO STOP PROCRASTINATING

Charles Dickens famously said: ‘Procrastination is the thief of time’.

Procrastination is intentionally delaying completing a task despite knowing it will have negative consequences. It’s a form of self-sabotage, which reduces the time available to complete the task, while increasing stress levels. So why do we do it?

Amygdala hijack – The amygdala is the part of the brain which moderates our fear response.

When we are distressed the rational part of our brain (the pre-frontal cortex) shuts down leaving the amygdala in charge. If we feel negative towards a task and our brain interprets this as distress, the amygdala steps in to persuade us NOT to do it.

Instant gratification – Humans tend to repeat tasks when our brain rewards us with a dopamine hit.

Procrastinating by watching cat videos on YouTube feels good in the present, like a reward, so we keep delaying tasks until procrastination becomes a chronic habit.

Present bias – We are more focused on who we are and how we feel today, than for our future self. We don’t dwell on how our current decisions will impact us in a few weeks or months. We actually process information about our current self and future self in separate parts of the brain.

Functional MRI scans reveal that we view our future-self in the same way we view a stranger. So it’s easier for us to defer tasks and decisions that favour our future self, and instead choose instant gratification which provide pleasure right now.

Stopping procrastination There is not a one size fits all solution but there are some tools which might help. Choose the ones that resonate with you.

Focus on the why – Will the task benefit someone else? Extrinsic motivation can sometimes be a powerful tool. ‘If don’t do this I will be letting them down.’ If it’s you who will benefit try writing down why you’re doing the task. A written reminder will help keep you focussed.

Eat the frog – If you knew you had to eat a live frog, you’d want to get the task finished first thing, then get on with your day knowing nothing else was going to be that bad. Eating the frog suggests that if we tackle an unpleasant task early in the day, everything else will seem easier.

Eat the Elephant – It’s an old joke: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time? Break a task down for small easy wins. That way you build momentum gradually, and don’t feel overwhelmed.

The 3/5/10 Minute Rule – Tell yourself you only have to do the task for three, five or ten minutes. Most likely, when the timer goes off you will have the built enough momentum to want to continue.

The pressure cooker method – If you feel like you need a sense of urgency to complete tasks give yourself a certain amount of time to get all or part of the job done. Set a timer, or download a productivity app.

Body doubling – Ask someone to sit with you while you complete the task. Studies show that having someone else in the room while you are working (even if they are just doing their own thing), really helps some people to focus.

Reward – Promise yourself a reward when you complete your task. Be specific: a scented bubble bath; an episode of your favourite sitcom; a jam donut ... whatever works for you.

Procrastination is a human trait. We can’t eradicate it, but we can learn to manage our time better.

SPACE INVADERS BY MATTHEW CARTER

HOW TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED FOR SPACE HAS APPEARED ON EARTH Space has been in the news a lot recently. From the Mars Rover to the James Webb telescope, we’ve marvelled at amazing images. In the 50th year since man last walked on the moon NASA is once again preparing a Lunar mission. It all seems far removed from our everyday lives, but did you know that some 2000 or more inventions that we use on Earth every day were actually invented by NASA? Here are my favourites: • Memory foam – Oh how I love my memory foam mattress and bike seat, and development of the ‘Tempur’ material used was NASA-funded. Engineers wanted to create better shockabsorbing aircraft seats for test pilots.

• Infrared thermometers – Ubiquitous throughout the first COVID outbreak, the technology was developed by the space agency, to gauge the temperature of distant cosmic objects.

• Mobile phone cameras – The image sensors used in just about every modern digital camera come directly from NASA. They were looking for better, cheaper, more efficient cameras for spacecraft, but the technology was quickly licensed and harnessed by camera and phone companies and is now used all over the world.

• Scratch resistant lens coatings – These were around before NASA got involved, but they were a bit ‘meh’. NASA developed a diamond-like carbon coating and used it to improve the scratch-resistance of sensitive instruments by as much as ten times. RayBan then decided to apply the technology to their lenses to create tough and super cool sunspecs.

• Comfortable running shoes – After inventing a rubber moulding process for astronaut helmets, NASA engineers applied the same technology to shoes. It allowed for the creation of shock absorbers in the soles, and these have now become a common feature in running shoes.

• Self-driving cars – Not mainstream yet but give it time. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Quantum Sciences and Technologies group, invented something with the intriguing name of the “whispering gallery mode optical resonator.” This was a spherical resonator for light waves, but no-one could think of a practical use for the technology until it was integrated into General Motors’ LiDAR systems for self-driving cars.

GREY IS THE NEW BLACK BY CHARLOTTE HARRIS GOING GREY GRACEFULLY A few years ago, I noticed that younger women were dying their hair grey. As a 45-year-old woman the irony was not lost on me. There I was paying to dye my hair back to its original chestnut while the 23-year-old sitting at the next basin was paying the same to achieve my silver locks. WHY was I doing this?

One of the many downsides of colouring hair is that you have to repeat the process every 3-8 weeks. I was closer to three weekly and was planning my life around my roots. Then there was the expense.

In spite of Davina McCall’s exhortations home dying did not look professional and my bathroom needed a deep clean afterwards. Finally, I was beginning to notice that dyed hair just didn’t look authentic on me. My skin looked just a little bit ‘off ’ next to my hair colour. So, I decided to embrace the grey.

Why do we go grey anyway?

Each hair grows from a follicle which contains cells called melanocytes. Melanocytes produce two types of pigments: eumelanin (dark brown or black), and pheomelanin (reddish yellow). In combination they are responsible for our hair colour. As we age the melanocytes in the hair follicle start to die and the hair becomes more transparent. Grey hair still has some melanin, but not enough to give us back our youthful hue. White hair has no melanin.

The process of going grey Lots of people opt for a shorter haircut but it’s not essential. I didn’t. I decided I’d grow mine to shoulder length and brazen it out. My hair is still fairly thick, so I wanted to make the most of it.

My hairdresser recommended a textured cut to give it volume and movement. I still hated it for the first three months, as my roots came in, and I wore hats a lot. I nearly caved at one point but my wonderful hairdresser talked me off the ledge. By six months I was loving the changes.

My hairdresser recommended that I used products with a bit of shine. Grey hair loses its natural shine and can look less healthy. I love to use a hair oil from about halfway down my hair, which softens and moisturizes it. I don’t use it all the way up the roots because it does weigh the hair down a little.

One bonus of being grey is that I have to wash my hair less. Grey hair is naturally drier so whereas before I was washing it every day or every other day, now I usually wash it every three or four days.

Another good recommendation was a specialist ‘purple’ shampoo and conditioner. ‘Don’t freak out when you first see it,’ my hairdresser warned me. ‘It’s very purple, but it will brighten your grey hair and remove yellow tones.’ Then she added, ‘Only use it once a week though or you’ll end up lilac!’ It works like a charm. I love how silver my hair looks when I use it but I’m mindful of her warning.

My biggest concern was about looking ‘old.’ It didn’t take me long to realise that if I didn’t embrace more colour in my wardrobe that is exactly what would happen. I switched to a brighter lipstick and added some jewel-coloured tops and statement earrings to my previously all black wardrobe. I even updated my spectacles to a bright coloured frame. In addition, I keep my hair in a modern, more youthful cut and I love the fact that the colour now compliments rather than competes with my skin tone.

Four years on I’m nearly fifty but I no longer worry about my roots, and I’m saving a fortune at the hairdresser. It’s not for everyone but I’d definitely recommend going grey because of the freedom it brings.

MEN’S HEALTH: MOVEMBER

ITS GOOD TO TALK

If you’re a guy who waits until something is seriously wrong before going to the doctor, you’re not alone. Local Urological Surgeons, Simon Woodhams and Dan Magrill, open up about Men’s Health.

It’s a common problem among men … a reluctance to talk about our health and more specifically, the prostate, penis or bladder. It’s understandable really, problems ‘down there’ don’t exactly make us feel our most masculine and talking about any type of health issue is never easy. But we need to face up to the problems.

Mr Woodhams explains: ‘Women are way ahead of us in terms of raising awareness for their own cancers such as breast or ovarian cancer. Men are lagging behind simply because of a reluctance to talk about these problems. It’s an issue that is getting better. Now, for example, we have ‘Movember’ when men are encouraged to grow a moustache for a month to help highlight male cancers. Movember, not only creates a fun way to raise money and awareness for men’s health issues, it also starts conversations about these issues. But there’s still a fair way to go. The biggest challenge is to not only to get men to spot symptoms, or to see their GP, but to talk about it openly. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

Mr Magrill continues: ‘It’s not the easiest thing to talk to your doctor about but early detection of conditions along with raising awareness in Men’s Health is important. It’s understandable why men shy away from issues with their urinary tract, lumps on the testes, erectile dysfunction or prostate but, like most illness or disease, we need to know more about these problems, and although the more we search for them, the more cases we find, it does help us get closer to helping people live longer and improve their quality of life. The earlier we spot symptoms, the greater the chance of finding curative solutions for them.

“Symptoms don’t always mean bad news and that if men visit their doctor early on, they might save themselves a whole lot of worry. Many of the signs that people associate with the prostate can be harmless. For example, problems urinating can be caused by the enlarging of the prostate gland, but that does not necessarily mean cancer. Also, erectile dysfunction can actually have more to do with the heart and can precede heart conditions that may present themselves in a few years time. So, it’s definitely worthwhile being examined to manage, prevent or treat that.’

PERFECT FOR BONFIRE NIGHT

Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 30 mins Serves: 12 INGREDIENTS • 225g / 8oz Plain flour • 115g / 4oz Golden syrup • 2 level tsps Ground ginger • 115g / 4oz Soft light• 1 level tsp Bicarbonate of Soda brown sugar • ½ level tsp salt • 115g /4 oz Unsalted • 225g /8oz Medium oatmeal butter • 115g / 4oz Black treacle

• 150ml / 5floz Milk • 1 Egg - beaten

METHOD • Preheat the oven to 180C / Gas mark 4. Grease and line a 30 x 25 x 5 cm (12 x 10 x 2 inch) roasting tin with grease-proof paper.

• Place the treacle, golden syrup, sugar and butter into a heavy-bottomed saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted. Remove from the heat. Allow to cool a little then beat in the milk and the egg.

• Sift the flour, ginger, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a large mixing bowl. Stir in the oatmeal and make a well in the centre.

• Pour the liquid mixture into the well and beat thoroughly.

• Pour into the roasting tin and bake in the centre of the oven until firm and springy.

• Leave to cool in the tin. When cold wrap in greaseproof paper and leave for a couple of days in an airtight tin, because the flavour of Parkin improves with keeping.

Sqn Ldr Joe Marsden piloted Vulcan aircraft during the Falklands conflict. Joe’s first talk will be a short background history of the Falklands and how life has developed in the islands since the conflict.

Joe looks mainly at the changes for the military, but will include the ways this has impacted on the local population. He will also cover some of the abundant wildlife and how this had resulted in an influx of tourists.

After a break, Joe Marsden will explain about the Vulcan aircraft itself, how it came into being, and its life, with many anecdotes. To finish, Joe will explain how the Vulcan’s capabilities led it to being a pivotal aircraft in the Falklands conflict with the famous ‘Operation Black Buck’ raid on the Falklands Islands during the conflict. Joe’s knowledge of the Vulcan and the Falklands after the conflict is second to none.

THE NEED FOR SPEED BY BARRY FOX Most of us remember the bad old early days of email and the Internet, with ‘dial-up’ connection by ordinary phone line and burbling modem. Everything crawled, especially when web sites were cluttered with fancy pictures that took an age to load.

All that changed with DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), a fiendishly clever system of electronically packaging fast computer data so it can travel a mile or so from the local telephone exchange via the copper phone wires originally intended simply to carry low-fi speech.

DSL is the cheapest way to get broadband, with speeds starting at around 10 Mbps (Mega/ Million bits per second) which is perfectly adequate for email, Googling and one person playing games or watching basic Netflix or Prime.

For faster speeds and bigger households, we need to pay more for a hybrid system.

The signal travels very fast as light pulses down optical fibres to cabinets on street corners. Equipment inside the cabinet converts the light into electric signals that travel on as DSL, by copper phone lines.

You get around 40 or 50 Mbps in the home.

There are variations in speed depending on distance from the exchange and the price you pay. The highest speeds are delivered – at higher prices - by Full Fire (Fibre to the Home or Fibre To The Premises). A fibre cable runs right into your house where a small box converts light pulses into electric signals.

Speeds are up to 1 Gigabit, a thousand Megabits per second. As one company proudly says, this lets you run a hundred devices, like Netflix boxes, at the same time. Great for big families in huge houses.

What’s not advertised is that if you send the signal round your home by Wi-FI (which most of us do) the speed is likely to drastically reduced. You are then paying extra for nothing extra.

One advantage of Full Fibre is also not much advertised – it lets you send information out of your home as fast as you can receive it. Great for people who work at home on graphics, movies or music. If you live in an area covered by Virgin, the basic service gives higher speeds than DSL or hybrid, because Virgin uses coaxial cable (like aerial cable) instead of phone wires.

What to do if you think you need more speed?

Google ‘speed test’ and follow the simple instructions to check the actual speed you are getting from your existing supplier. Compare this with the speed promised, and complain if they don’t roughly match.

If you then think you really need more speed, shop around for a better deal when your current contract is up. Very likely, rather than lose a customer, your current provider will do you a good deal.

Speed of Help when things go wrong also matters. Some services have a bad reputation. So, ask neighbours and Google for user comments before committing.

SHRUNKEN! BY GEMMA BROWN

SWEATER RESCUE 101

As the days became colder I pulled out my super-soft wool sweater and wore it for a while. Then I popped it in the wash basket with the intention of freshening it up before wearing it again. Then I fell victim to COVID (again) for a few days. During this time, my lovely husband and teenage daughter looked after me. One evening 15-year-old Elise appeared nervously by my bed. “Um. You know your turquoise sweater, it wasn’t like, your favourite or anything was it?”

Yup, she’d shoved my nicest, cosiest knit in the tumble drier and shrunk it. “Never mind love,” I said through gritted teeth as I looked at my now diminutive pullover, which was too small even for her, “I’ll put one on my Christmas list.”

But I reckoned without the resourcefulness of teenagers. The next day, as I was attempting to get out of bed on wobbly legs for the first time in a week, she reappeared with my sweater, now apparently magically regrown. “How did you do that?” I asked. She looked pleased with herself, “YouTube!” she replied. “There’s a tutorial for most things. I looked up ‘shrunken sweater solutions’ and followed the instructions.”

And here are those instructions for anyone else who has ever accidentally ruined their knitwear.

Wool items shrink because there are scales on the surface of the wool that react to the combination of heat, moisture and agitation in a washing machine or tumble drier. The scales stick to each other and interlock like Velcro, so you end up with a jumper that’s several sizes too small. Any rescue attempt is aimed at relaxing and separating the fibres.

Fill a sink with lukewarm water and 50ml of hair conditioner. Soak the sweater thoroughly, make sure it’s completely wet and leave it for ten minutes. This helps to relax the fibres and release the scales. DON’T wring it. Instead let the water out of the sink and press out the excess water.

Then spread a large towel out on a firm surface and lay the sweater out on top of the towel.

Place another large towel over the sweater and press out as much water as possible. Elise apparently used a rolling pin for this bit!

Then gently (so you don’t break any fibres) stretch the sweater out to pull the now unlocked fibres away from each other and back into the desired shape. Finally, allow it to air dry. This may take a couple of days.

Unfortunately, this method doesn’t always work. Elise also shrank my husband’s sweater in the same wash load, and it ‘felted’ quite badly and sadly was beyond rescue. His sweater was a looser knit lambswool while mine was a tight knit cashmere. The looser knit and shorter fibres of his jumper meant the heat and moisture had more of a ‘shrink’ effect because there was more ‘room’ for shrinkage to occur. The fact my sweater is a tighter knit and is probably made from longer fibres meant it was easier to relax them again.

So, while not a fool proof solution, Elise scored a 50% success rate, learned a valuable life lesson in the process, and has promised her dad a new sweater for Christmas!

FEELING FRUITY

Autumn is well advanced and following some brilliant colour, the trees and shrubs have shed most of their leaves. Many of us will have been busy tidying our plots in preparation for winter.

However, if you’ve ever fancied growing your own fruit then now is the perfect time to put in a little extra effort.

From now until spring is the best window to plant fruit trees because now is the time that nurseries are selling bare-root trees. ‘Bare-root’ simply means without pots or soil. Bare root trees are cheaper than those grown in pots, but they are quick to establish providing you follow a few simple steps.

Before you plant the tree, soak the roots in a bucket of water for at least two hours, so it gets a good drink.

Prepare a large enough area, at least 1 metre diameter. This means that if you are planting in a lawn you’ll need to remove an area of turf to the same diameter to stop the grass competing with the new tree for nutrients and water. Wherever you plant, make sure you dig in lots of organic matter, this could be garden compost, leaf mould, or well-rotted manure. Make sure you dig it all around the area where the hole will be, rather than just into the hole itself, because this will encourage the new tree to put roots out into the surrounding soil, helping it to establish quickly.

The hole for the new tree needs to be roomy enough so that the roots will not be crammed together.

Drive a stake into the ground to a depth of at least 60cm. This will provide support for your fledgling tree.

If you are planting a grafted tree, there will be a clear join where it was grafted on to the rootstock This join should remain above the soil level when planted. It’s easier if there are two of you; one to hold the tree at the correct level, and one to backfill the hole around the roots.

The person holding the tree should shake the trunk gently as the hole is filled, so that soil gets in between all the roots.

Once you’ve filled the hole, firm the soil gently with your foot. Don’t compact the soil too much. The drag more soil over the compressed area.

Use a soft rubber tie to secure the tree to the stake at a height of 60cm. Too low and the tree won’t be secure; too high and the tree won’t flex enough in the wind. Allowing the tree to flex a little encourages more root growth and results in a stronger tree.

Finally, water in well and apply a 5cm layer of organic mulch over the area but NOT touching the trunk, because it might rot. The mulch helps to suppress weeds, provide insulation, and retain moisture.

CAN YOU HELP SPREAD SOME SUNSHINE? Sunflower Sisters is a voluntary group providing a support for Ukranians fleeing the war, including helping them find safe sponsors under the UK Homes For Ukraine scheme.

Whether you have space for a single guest or a whole family, they provide practical and emotional support throughout the whole process, always keeping your best interests at heart and finding you the best possible guest for your personal circumstances. They focus wholeheartedly on facilitating a match that works for both parties and help build the foundations of a rewarding experience. They have a specific support group where sponsors can share their experiences between each other and obtain advice on an ongoing basis, as well as guidelines and recommendations based directly on their experience from the beginning of the scheme.

They have already helped place over 10000 Ukrainian refugees with sponsors, yet so many more are fleeing a terrifying situation and desperately asking for guidance through a process that can be daunting and stressful as they step into the unknown. THE HIDDEN GARDEN BY KATE HARRISON Paul Sadler has accepted a National Garden Scheme Award on behalf of The Hidden Garden, a community garden in Selsey.

The Hidden Garden, a wonderful community garden, was presented with an award by Lady Meryl Walters and Maggi Hooper, West Sussex County Organisers for The National Garden Scheme. The community garden in Selsey helps and encourages local people to work with nature and learn about growing fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers. It also provides advice on how adults and children can encourage wildlife to thrive in their own garden. Activities include a Friday activity session for young people and a weekly ‘Tea Garden’ for elderly residents.

The project is organised by the Selsey Community Forum but looked after by a dedicated group of local volunteers. By opening their garden for the NGS, they will help to raise millions of pounds for nursing and health charities including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute.

Our listening volunteers are there for anyone who needs someone to talk to. It’s always different and always interesting – no two conversations are the same.

Anyone has it in them to be a Samaritan. You don’t need to have previous experience or qualifications, but you will need to be empathetic, non-judgemental, and accepting of others. You’ll receive full training to prepare you for the kinds of conversations you’ll have. And when you start out, you’ll have a mentor with you, to give you confidence you’re doing the right thing. In return we ask for a minimum commitment of three hours per week.

As a listening volunteer you get the chance to make a real difference to someone’s future. You’ll get to join a diverse and supportive team of people and benefit from a range of new skills and the confidence to use them, including the ability to understand people and manage difficult conversations.

A GOOD READ

The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki This is the most beautiful and unusual book I have read for a while. With themes of love, family, grief, mental health, and substance abuse it sounds heavy, but be assured that though the book is heavy at 548 pages, the story is not.

Benny Oh is a 14-year-old boy whose father dies in an unfortunate accident. Benny and his mother Annabelle grieve in their different ways. Annabelle begins to hoard while Benny starts to hear the voices of the objects in his home speak to him; the socks which want to be with their partner and books which want to be organised on the shelf. Benny find this constant noise unsettling and intrusive and retreats to the library where all the things use their quiet voices, and where he meets some wonderful off-grid characters who provide a moving insight into mental ill-health.

The Book actually narrates the novel. The Book is a character in its own right and interacts with Benny directing him to be the hero of his own story. They even disagree over how to tell the family’s back story, particularly when it comes to his mother’s sex life.

Ozeki blurs the line between Benny’s hallucinations and the reality of The Book. Do the objects really talk to him?

Infused with warmth and wisdom the novel has some great characters, like the landlady’s evil son who is hell bent on evicting Benny and Annabelle, and a Marie Kondo character who Annabelle appeals to for help, shining a light on how our relationships are impacted by the importance we give to material belongings and the clutter we allow in our lives.

This is an enchanting and highly original novel. I read it then listened to the audio book, narrated by Kerry Shale, which I have to say was even better!

You Choose by Pippa Goodhart (Author), Nick Sharratt (Illustrator) Imagine you could go anywhere, meet anyone, and do anything.

Where would you live? Where would you sleep? Who would be your friends? What games would you play?

This beautifully illustrated book (Nick Sharratt never disappoints) has a simple concept: each double-page is packed with detailed drawings of different things that a child can choose.

There is a set of destinations including beaches, cities, towns, forests, an island, and a desert. There are pages of different people, and different foods etc. There is so much to discuss with a young child as you turn the pages. Choices can be ordinary or wildly absurd. It’s a wonderful springboard for young children to tell their own stories.

Imagine knowing you don’t have anything for your children to open on Christmas morning.

Increasing levels of financial hardship and worries for the future mean that more and more families are going to feel the financial and emotional strain this Christmas.

We’ve seen an increase in demand for all our services at My Sisters’ House Women’s Centre this year and Christmas is going to be no different.

We’re committed to finding ways to make Christmas that little bit easier for local women struggling to get by. Last year, thanks to amazing donations from our local community (especially readers of In Focus), we helped 306 local families put something under the tree for their children. We’re doing it again this year and we need your help.

We’d be grateful for donations of any new, unwrapped gifts for children and young teenagers, and gift cards for older teenagers. We also need small items for stocking fillers.

BOGNOR REGIS CONCERT BAND’S ‘CHRISTMAS CONCERT’ IS BACK IN FELPHAM The Bognor Regis Concert Christmas Band is back on Saturday 17 December 2022 at 7pm.

The band entertained a spectacular crowd of over 200 people at the Bognor Regis ‘Proms in the Park’ event in September and their excellent ‘Proms at Sea’ concert in the Alexandra Theatre was also a great success.

Following on from these events the Band’s Christmas Concert is back and will be held at St Mary’s Centre, Grassmere Close, Felpham this December. Enjoy an evening of Christmas music which is bound to fill you with festive spirit and there will also be a raffle and interval refreshments.

Tickets are available on the door. £6 for adults. £4 for children under 16 and there is free parking. We look forward to seeing you there.

Most burglars are opportunists and will look for a soft target – a premises that appears unoccupied or one which is easy for them to break into or already insecure.

Before going out we recommend you do the following: • Close and lock all doors and windows even if you will only be gone for a short amount of time.

• If you have an alarm, ensure it is set.

• Keep valuables out of sight.

• Don’t leave car documents or ID on view.

• Keep handbags and keys away from letterboxes or cat flaps.

• During the hours of darkness, shut the curtains and leave a light on.

• If you are out all day, then consider a timer device to turn lights or a radio on.

• Ensure all side gates, sheds and garages are kept locked.

• Consider installing a video doorbell. This can act as a deterrent, keeping your property safe as well as helping to solve crimes.

We would always ask that should you spot something suspicious, please let us know at the time by calling 999. It could be nothing but it might well be something and this could help keep you, your neighbours and their property safe.
