Dear All, Remembrance Sunday is a national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life. For me this is also a time to reflect and hope that world peace is possible, a hope that seems a long way off as we witness the war devastating the lives of the people in Israel and Palestine.

The poppy is a beautiful symbol of remembrance and one that many of us will be wearing during November.

A SOLDIER’S DREAM BY KIM LESLIE

The guns could be heard far along the Sussex coast. Even miles inland, near East Grinstead in 1916, playwright George Bernard Shaw sat in an otherwise peaceful garden, deeply depressed by the ‘throb in the air’, a ‘drumming in the sky’, inescapable sounds of the slaughter on the Somme.

The live battlefield brought to the very doorstep of peaceful Sussex homes. Eerie reminders of the destructive forces of the war were never far away. Before active service on the front line, First World War soldiers streamed through the county to training camps – one of the largest in the UK set up on the hills above Shoreham. A poison-gas training facility was dug into the Downs above Cuckmere Haven. Perverse echoes of death and suffering amidst the beauties and peace of Sussex.

And after the horrors of active service, maimed soldiers went to makeshift military hospitals at Graylingwell in Chichester and the Royal Pavilion in Brighton.

From their front-line hell in the trenches, engulfed by mud, barbed wire and pulped bodies, artillery fire overhead, soldiers could only dream of this beauty and peace – the homeland they might never see again – dreams expressed by so many soldier-poets; every few yards of trench produced its own poet. One such was ‘Field Officer’, the anonymous Royal Sussex poet.

‘A Soldier’s Dream’ with its accompanying illustration is powerful imagery. Stark contrast its message: the brightness of the country cottage in its ‘vale of peace’ against the black silhouette of the soldier ready for winter’s battle, a bright light in a dark world; the idyllic and threatening; home and abroad linked by a dream in a lonely trench: It was a dream of midnight, when, in the lonely trench I saw a vision, sweet with beauty rare, And fragrant with the scent of summer’s dawn.

Like a dream that comes to men in hell When parted from the light of radiant earth They see the forms of those in life so dear, Or hear the sighs of all who mourn.

A sun-kissed cottage nestling in a vale of peace….

So near in dreams, in distance far away….

Beyond the house an old and mossy orchard told Where trees in root and wisdom knarled Gave forth the fruits of earth that to my parched tongue Were like the draughts of Tantalus of old While all was peace, peace in stillness of the day In English countryside far from hosts or crowded way …

That knows no anguish of a blood-stained field …

These blood-stained fields of the First World War saw the slaughter of millions. Terrifying.

Catastrophic. It was the war to end all wars – The Great War – but not so. Within twentyone years, global conflict engulfed the world yet again, with more millions dead. The toll has continued: Korea, the Falklands, Iraq, Afghanistan. The ultimate sacrifice of these millions will be the focus of our thoughts and prayers as we gather around the nation’s war memorials on Remembrance Sunday.

We will remember them.

LOCAL HISTORY BY SYLVIA ENDACOTT Richard Sharpe became the landlord of The Rising Sun, on the Chichester Road, in 1895, which was opened as a grocery store and Inn. But what was its claim to fame? Well that was postage stamps and where thousands of visitors were to make this one of the towns most extraordinary and unique tourist attractions.

Richard Sharp collected postage stamps and this was to form the basis of his future, as his stamp collection grew and he began decorating a few picture frames with his stamps. Then in 1882 a customer bet Richard that he would not be able to cover part of a room with stamps.

Richard was to take up this challenge and with 76,795 stamps he succeeded in covering all aspects by sticking the stamps on the walls won his bet. It was estimated that over two million stamps were used and the estimated value, during the 1920s was in the region of £28,000. Sometimes full sacks of stamps arrived at the pub. During its heyday the The Rising Sun was mentioned in many publications recounting that it was ‘one of the sights of Sussex.’

Richard Sharp started to cover chairs, tables, a candlestick, a tablecloth, a hat and even a bust of King Edward VII did not escape. His coverings then extended into a corridor and even continued out into the summerhouse in the garden. Eventually, in the 1920s, Richard Sharpe retired. By then over three quarters of a million visitors had seen his stamps and written in the 24 visitors’ books Known as the Rising Sun, Stamps and the Bersted Tavern. It is now transformed into Tesco Express, selling grocers and alcohol ...

JIGSAW JUPP ‘Mike Jupp is one of the most beloved jigsaw puzzle artists in the world and his comical creations have delighted puzzlers for years,’ – All Jigsaw Puzzles Ltd. These days Mike Jupp (MJ) from North Bersted is best known for his award winning jigsaw puzzle art, but his earliest ambition was to be involved in cartoon films. He was the very first animation student at Worthing’s West Sussex College of Art and Design and after graduating, worked in publishing and advertising. It was his advertising work that introduced him to animation as, during 1975, he was hired as an illustrator and character designer for a Dutch film company.

One of the Dutch projects was produced in Northern California, and MJ was sent to Mill Valley Animation in Novato, Marin County in the early 1980’s. During his time there he met movie director, George Lucas who was impressed and endorsed MJ’s own creation ‘The Dreamstone’. The money subsequently appeared enabling MJ to direct a five minute Dreamstone pilot film.

Martin Gates Productions and Central Television brought ‘The Dreamstone’ to ITV in 1990.

It aired for four seasons, followed by MJ’s second TV creation ‘Bimble’s Bucket’. In all, he created 39 hours of British TV Cartoons. which in his own words, “Must be some sort of record?” Mike still lives and works in North Bersted and has recently gone into partnership with British jigsaw puzzle manufacturer AJP. www.alljigsawpuzzles.co.uk See advert on page 3.

WADING INTO WINTER

In November, when the nights are drawing in and we start hibernating for the winter, Pagham Harbour and Medmerry RSPB reserves are alive with visiting winter birds. If you have not visited the reserves before, now is a great time to go. For beginner birdwatchers, identifying the different birds in the monochrome tones of winter can be confusing. Here’s a few to look out for: Waders The black-tailed godwits you see at RSPB Pagham This is an overarching term for a number of Harbour and Medmerry have come all the way from species which share many characteristics.

Iceland and are among the many visitors that spend Curlews, turnstones, redshanks, snipes, godwits the winter months here, drawn by the plentiful and plovers (among others) are all ‘waders’ which, supplies of food as well as shelter on the reserves. as the name suggests, can often be found wading in shallow waters. At Pagham Harbour, look out for the black-tailed godwit. With their fabulous long legs, straight beaks and soft grey winter plumage, these elegant winter visitors are likely to be migrants from Iceland.

Divers You might initially identify divers by their unusual feather structure which gives them a more primitive look compared to other seabirds. They have long slender bodies with legs situated at the back rather than the middle. This gives them many superpowers, for example, they are exceptionally graceful and fast swimmers and can dive down to depths of 10 metres.

The red-throated is the smallest and most common in British waters – the red throat only being visible in the breeding season, and so more easily identified by their white faces and soft grey cap and neck. The great northern diver looks very different; it is a much larger and stockier bird, slightly smaller than a cormorant, with a shorter neck and a steep forehead compared to the red-throated diver.

Grebes Grebes also have feet situated towards the back of their body allowing them to be adept and graceful swimmers. In the UK, Slavonian Grebes breed on just a few lochs in Scotland, but the sea around the Selsey peninsula and Chichester Harbour has become an important wintering site for these little birds; again they prefer to stay in the waters offshore. In their fine breeding plumage, they display stunning, exotic colours of golden yellow and rich rusty reds; in the winter, they are still beautiful but a monochrome black and white.

GILBERT WHITE WALK BY SIMON BAKER IRONS A beautiful November walk can be taken across Selborne Common from the village of Selborne in East Hampshire. The area is famous for its association with the eighteenth-century naturalist Gilbert White, who wrote the book ‘The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne’ (1789), where he records his observations on the plants, birds, and animals of this lovely area, the book is still in print today. This moderate walk gains 90m in height via the Zigzag Path that was cut by Gilbert White and his brother John in 1753. The idea was to make the walk easier from Gilbert’s village of Selborne to his brother’s village of Newton Valence.

• From the car park behind the Selborne Arms, take the footpath that is just in front of the toilet block, signposted to Selborne Common that follows the edge of a field and woodland strip to the start of the ‘Zigzag Path’.

• Begin the ascent of the steep slope via the stepped Zigzag Path. The path is not as steep as it looks, and the many hairpin bends make the ascent up the hill much easier. The hedges that border the path make it feel like you are walking through a maze with only one exit at the top. As you ascend the view over Selborne, Oakhangar Woods and the Hampshire countryside becomes more stunning. There are benches halfway and at the top where you can sit and admire the views.

Look for the sarsen or wishing stone at the top, placed there by White.

• Follow the path that leads off behind the top bench and continue along until it straightens out and then brings you to a gate which you should go through to enter Selborne Common.

• There are many paths that can be followed around the common, we did a circular route through the glade of ivy-covered trunks of beech trees felled by the great storms of 1987 and 1990, then through the mixture of oak and other broadleaf trees that were displaying their beautiful autumnal colours. We then descended back to the village via a long path through the Selborne Hangar to the base of the Zigzag Path again.

• From here you can return to the car park where you can access Gilbert White’s House and Gardens and further explore the village.

It is worth crossing the busy road to the Plestor where fairs and markets were held. It looks like time has stood still and very little has changed over the centuries. The fantastic little pottery shop making and selling some unique pottery is also worth a visit.

• To the north of the plestor is the 12th century Norman church. Inside is a stainedglass window with birds that was erected for the bicentenary of White’s birth in 1920, and another window with animals that commemorates his death in 1993. In the cemetery to the north of the church you can find White’s gravestone.

• The short walk back to the car park completes the walk.

THE ENDURING RELEVANCE OF WAR POETS BY BRIAN ALLEN REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY – NOVEMBER 12TH Many of us studied the War Poets at school. Our children may be studying them now. Have you ever asked yourself why?

War poets, as a collective, have been instrumental in capturing the essence of conflict, the human costs of warfare, and the profound emotional experiences of soldiers and civilians alike. These poets, primarily from World War I and II, painted vivid pictures of the battlefield, the trenches, and the emotional toll of war, creating lasting impressions that would shape our understanding of conflict for generations.

During World War I, poets like Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, and Rupert Brooke detailed the grim realities of life on the front lines. Unlike the romanticized versions of war often portrayed in the media, these poets presented war for what it was: bloody, brutal, and often senseless. Owen’s Dulce et Decorum est is a poignant example, decrying the false glory of dying for one’s country and highlighting the horrors faced by soldiers. Sassoon, on the other hand, critiqued the military establishment and the war’s futility, creating an enduring legacy of anti-war literature.

The significance of war poetry, especially from the early 20th century, lies in its capacity to humanize statistics.

Millions perished during the World Wars, but numbers alone cannot communicate the suffering of individuals, nor the grieving of families left behind. The war poets gave voice to this pain, ensuring that the personal experiences of those affected by conflict would not be forgotten. Their works serve as a stark reminder of the costs of war, urging caution and diplomacy over aggression and conflict.

While World War I poets are perhaps the most renowned, poets from subsequent conflicts have continued the tradition. World War II poets, including Keith Douglas and Alun Lewis, grappled with the vast scale of the conflict and the devastation wrought by the atom bomb and concentration camps.

Today, the legacy of war poetry is more relevant than ever. As the world grapples with new forms of conflict, including cyber warfare, drone strikes, and ideological battles, the need for voices to humanize and critique these events remains important.

Brian Turner, who served in Iraq, tackles issues of PTSD, the civilian cost in modern warfare, and the mental turmoil soldiers experience when reintegrating into civilian life. Turner’s Here, Bullet is a raw, visceral look into the Iraq war, encapsulating the tension and unpredictability that modern soldiers face. Poets like Dunya Mikhail, an Iraqi expatriate, write of the effects of war on the homeland, and bridge the gap between soldier and civilian experiences.

Today, warfare and its aftermath can be relayed around the world instantly. Poetry offers a space for reflection, allowing readers to consider the personal experiences behind the headlines. Through evocative imagery and emotional depth, war poetry humanizes the dehumanized, reminding us of the shared humanity that binds us, even in times of conflict.

War poets, hold a mirror to society, forcing us to confront the realities of conflict and the profound impact it has on individuals and communities. Their works serve as both a cautionary tale and a call to compassion, urging current and future generations to seek paths of peace and understanding. As global conflicts continue to evolve, the voices of war poets remain an essential tool in making sense of the chaos.

TREES: HEROES OF NATURE

Trees have graced our planet for over 370 million years, offering a range of benefits that render them indispensable to life as we know it. National Tree Week (25th November-3rd December) celebrates the many reasons why trees are the champions of the natural world and why we should all plant a tree today.

Every school student learns that trees play a pivotal role in the process of carbon dioxide reduction. Through photosynthesis they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, a vital element for most organisms on Earth. A mature leafy tree can produce as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale in a year. By cleansing the air, trees essentially act as the lungs of our planet.

Trees are formidable warriors in the battle against climate change. By absorbing and storing carbon dioxide, they mitigate the greenhouse effect, helping to cool our warming planet.

Forests worldwide store more than 296 gigatons of carbon, acting as crucial carbon sinks.

Forests, rich with trees of all kinds, are hotspots of biodiversity. They provide habitat, food, and protection to countless species, from the tallest giraffes nibbling on treetop leaves in Africa, to the smallest beetles burrowing in the bark of rainforest trees. Without trees, many of these habitats would be lost, leading to massive declines in biodiversity.

Trees play an essential role in maintaining the health and integrity of our soil. Their root systems anchor the soil, preventing erosion, particularly in areas susceptible to landslides or during heavy rainfall. Furthermore, fallen leaves decompose and enrich the soil with nutrients, promoting a healthy ground ecosystem.

Trees significantly influence the water cycle. They absorb rainfall and produce water vapour through transpiration, which is then released into the atmosphere. This process not only aids in cloud formation but also ensures that water is recycled back into our environment through rain, maintaining a balanced ecosystem.

In urban environments, trees act as natural air conditioners. Their shade cools down streets and cities, reducing the need for air conditioning in nearby buildings and lowering energy costs.

Moreover, trees absorb and block sunlight, reducing the heat island effect common in urban areas.

Recent studies have highlighted the health benefits associated with trees. Proximity to green spaces with trees, has been linked to reduced stress, lower depression rates, and increased physical activity. A new Online Service for creating a Lasting Power of Attorney with our help

Whoever you choose will be your ‘attorney’ and you can choose more than one person. You can appoint them with a legal document called a ‘lasting power of attorney’ (LPA). Time to bolster your natural immunity to this season’s bugs and viruses.

• Get outside – There are many benefits to being out in nature. Fresh air makes us feel better and exposure to sunlight boosts vitamin D levels. Research suggests this helps prevent chronic illness, improves bone health, and can even ease depression.

• When you’re at home, open a window or two and let the air in your home circulate. Rebreathing the same stale air can increase our chances of getting sick and leave us feeling less than invigorated.

• Have an early night - Sleep might be the single most important factor in regulating our immune function. Studies show that people who are sleep deprived are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus. The science says that sleep is important for our systems to ‘remember’ how to fight off infections.

• Reduce stress – Stressed bodies are in fight-or-flight mode. This part of our nervous system was designed to help us escape from predators. Unfortunately, it also suppresses the immune response, leaving us more prone to illness and infection. Rest, practising mindfulness, and taking time out just for us will improve our mental health and decrease stress levels, allowing our immune system to recover.

• Eat well – Healthy food can help improve our sleep hygiene, our concentration, and our energy levels. Citrus fruits are packed full of vitamin C, as are red peppers; ginger and turmeric are antiinflammatory; nuts and seeds contain vitamin E; garlic is high in sulphur making it an effective antiviral agent; dark berries are packed full of ani-oxidants; shellfish are a good source of zinc, and carrots and sweet potatoes are high in beta-carotene.

• Exercise - Physical activity doesn’t just boost the immune system it moderates it. Regular exercise helps prevent the immune response from becoming overactive. It also lowers cholesterol, blood pressure, and the risk of heart disease and helps us sleep better.

BY THE FRIENDS OF FELPHAM We are all here in Felpham for different reasons. Some of us were born here, some returned after living away and others discovered Felpham and decided this was the place for us. What unites us all is our love of Felpham. Not just the sea, the open sky, its church, cafés, pubs, shops, businesses, societies and, of course, its cheerful dogs!! But us, its community. It’s impossible to walk down the street without a cheery hello and friendly wave. We’re very proud of our living, caring village. Felpham is a special place.

And at the centre of the village is the Village Post Office.

On our doorstep, a convenient, familiar place to bank, mail post, return our Amazon packages, apply for passport and drivers’ licences, get our newspapers, buy our cards and sweets, learn about local events, buy tickets … and so, so much more.

The Village Post Office is the hub of the village. It’s where people meet to chat, inside and out. Sit on the bench and watch the world go by. We can nip to the pop-up for a delicious bun or fragrant plants. And even if you don’t use the Village Post Office much, we all know that the Post Office, sitting right in the heart of village, is the barometer of the health and vibrancy of our lovely community.

Felpham has had a post office since 1847. It was in Grassmere Cottage where the florist is now, on the modern Grassmere Parade. (A fascinating history of the Post Office has been drawn up by previous Post Master, Keith Hellyer.) Today, the Post Office is up for sale. A big thanks to Mark and all his fabulous helpers for his fantastic time there and for keeping us going through the pandemic and beyond.

We are in serious danger of losing this special asset. But all is not lost yet. We have an opportunity to save the Village Post Office and make it even more special and beneficial to the community. We, the community, purchase it through individual donations as a Community Interest Company.

PEAR AND CHOCOLATE PUDDING

A light and luscious cake using in-season pears.

Preparation time: 20 minutes. Cooking time: 40 minutes. Serves: 8 INGREDIENTS 85g butter, plus 1 tbsp extra for tin.

85g hazelnuts or almonds, toasted and ground in a 85g golden caster sugar, plus extra for tin. food processor.

85g gluten-free dark chocolate, broken into pieces. 4 very ripe pears, peeled, halved, and cored.

1 tbsp brandy.

Icing sugar, for dusting.

3 eggs, separated.

METHOD • Grease the sides of a 25cm loose-bottomed cake tin and line the base with baking parchment. Sprinkle in 2 tbsp caster sugar and swirl it around to coat the base and sides, then tip out any excess.

• Preheat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Melt the chocolate and butter in a bowl over a pan of hot water, remove from the heat, stir in the brandy and leave to cool.

• Whisk the egg yolks with the caster sugar in a large bowl until pale and thick; then fold into the cooled chocolate along with the ground hazelnuts or almonds.

• In a separate bowl, with a clean whisk, beat the whites until they reach a soft peak (don’t over beat). Stir a spoonful of the whites into the chocolate mix, then carefully fold in the rest of them in. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin. Level it off, then arrange the pears over the mixture, cut side down. Bake for about 40 mins until the pears are soft and the cake is cooked all the way through. Leave to cool in the tin for five minutes before releasing it, then place on a rack to cool completely.

• Dust with icing sugar and serve with crème fraîche.

ST ANDREW’S DAY – 30 NOVEMBER

How did St Andrew (who never set foot in Scotland) become its patron Saint?

Born in Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee, Andrew was the brother of Peter. Before following Jesus, both brothers were fishermen. In Christian tradition, St Andrew was known for his strong faith and fervent devotion, and he is credited with being the first apostle and introducing his brother to Jesus.

His missionary journeys are believed to have included areas like Greece, Turkey, and possibly parts of modern-day Russia and Poland.

However, what ties St Andrew to Scotland is not his life but the manner of his martyrdom and subsequent legends. After Jesus died, Andrew continued to preach about Jesus and his teachings. The Roman rulers took exception to this and martyred Andrew for his beliefs. Andrew was crucified on an X-Shaped cross, called ‘Crux Decussata’, more commonly known as the Saltire, or St Andrew’s Cross. The story goes that Andrew chose to be crucified this way because he deemed himself unworthy to be crucified on the same type of cross as had been used for Jesus. This symbol was ultimately adopted for the national flag of Scotland.

The connection with Scotland deepened with legends suggesting that some of St Andrew’s relics were brought to Scotland by St Regulus. He was said to be guided by a divine vision to take these relics to the ‘ends of the earth’ for safekeeping. His journey led him to the east coast of Scotland, to a place now known as St Andrews, which made the town a major pilgrimage site in medieval times.

St Andrew has been celebrated in Scotland for over one thousand years, with feasts being held in his honour as far back as the year 1000 AD. However, it wasn’t until 1320, when Scotland’s independence was declared with the signing of The Declaration of Arbroath, that he officially became Scotland’s patron saint.

BY FELPHAM FASHION GURU VICKY BOOKER As I write this at the beginning of October, it’s a balmy 20 degrees! But when the cold weather finally kicks in, we’ll all want to be feeling warm and cosy.

Of course, you can get a padded coat, or a super warm fleecy jacket, but often it’s about building the thinner layers underneath.

When I mention thermals, it may conjure up images of very old-fashioned woolly undies, but I’m all about adding warmth with style, and even a touch of glamour! So here are some of my top picks to keep out the chills this winter …

This roll neck from Uniqlo (left) doesn’t scream ‘thermals’ so works as a top in its own right. The form-fitting style also lends itself to layering and comes in six colours so you can match up your favourite jumper of cardigan to wear over the top. This is part of Uniqlo’s extensive HEATTECH range which include scoop neck tops, leggings, joggers, hats, socks and more!

I love these thermal smart jogger-style trousers (right) from stylish outdoor brand ACAI (also available in Pine green). These are the ‘Casual Stroll Pants’ and work as well for walks in the woods, as for the deserved drink in the pub afterwards. Fleece-lined and water resistant, these have a 4-way stretch fabric so are comfy and practical as well as stylish.

Who says thermals are boring! This glitter camisole (also in leggings and long-sleeved versions) from underwear brand Pour Moi (left) brings the glamour to staying warm. Ideal to wear for a night out under another top or jacket, when you want to keep out the chills but still look good!

Even when it’s not that cold, my feet seem to be freezing (that’s bad circulation for you!), so a good pair of thermal socks is a must in the winter. Often, being warm equates with thick wooliness that is great with big walking boots or wellies, but not so good with ‘regular’ boots or shoes. So, these ‘Ultra-lite’ socks from thermal brand Heat Holders (right) are a great option for day to day. Apparently, they’re three times warmer than a basic cotton sock, so you’ll have cosy tootsies without the bulk!

When you want to wear a dress or skirt, but it’s properly cold, regular tights don’t always cut it. So good old trusty M&S have a range of thermal tights in their Heatgen range (left). FUN FRIDAY SOCIAL BY KATE STEWART FFS! (Fun Friday Social!) is a relaxed, informal networking event for local business people. It was created in 2021 by Emma Bailey of Media Circus and Mark & Kristiann of MJR Solicitors because they felt there was a need for a more informal local business networking group.

Emma says: “I have done local networking in “lockout” groups – where only one business from every profession is allowed to join, for around 16 years. These groups are great and extremely effective for those who are members, but I’d often meet people who wanted to join but couldn’t because there was already someone in the group doing what they did. People were also terrified of giving presentations and the public speaking element of the more formal, structured networking formats.

“So Mark came up with the idea of having a networking social for business people, but in a relaxed pub setting. All the benefits of networking, without the scary bits! So FFS! was born! We chose the name because it was a cheeky play on words, an attention grabber and wasn’t too formal plus, it represented the more relaxed approach we wanted to take.

People buy from people, so it’s a great way to get yourself out there and meet different like-minded business people AND it’s free. There’s no need to book, just turn up. If you have business cards or flyers, bring some, if not, no worries, just bring you! The next event will take place on Friday 26th January at ‘The Track’, inside the Bognor train station building between 5-7pm. We will resume the quarterly events in our local pubs going forward. HOW SECURE IS YOUR WI-FI? BY TOM HANCOCK How much thought do you give to your home Wi-Fi security? Probably not enough. An insecure home Wi-Fi network means that outsiders can easily access it, and as well as using your internet for free, they can exploit it for malicious activities. They could access data on devices connected to that network, including passwords, financial data, personal photos, and confidential documents. Someone could even use your network to engage in illegal activities online which could be traced back to you. Even if unauthorized users aren’t engaging in malicious activity, the added traffic can lead to network congestion, resulting in reduced performance for legitimate users.

Wi-Fi security might seem daunting, but it’s more about taking the right steps than it is about technical complexity. Here are areas where people often slip up: • Setup: Adjusting router settings feels like a chore, but investing a little time now can prevent problems later. Make it a point to familiarize yourself with your router’s control panel.

• Ageing Routers: Don’t mistake a working router for a secure one. Old routers might not receive crucial security updates, making them potential targets. Consider upgrading if your router is out of date.

• Neglecting Firmware Updates: Regular updates not only provide security patches but also improve router performance. Ensure automatic updates are enabled.

• Weak Passwords: Opt for a robust Wi-Fi password. Avoid easily guessable passwords like “password” or “12345678”, or your surname!

• Default Admin Passwords: Replace the generic passwords e.g., ‘admin’, that your router came with to prevent unauthorized access.

• Using Outmoded Security Protocols: Move beyond outdated encryption like WEP or even WPA. WPA3 is the newest standard, so look for routers that support it.

• Enabled Vulnerable Services: Disable insecure features like Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), which can be easily exploited.

• Unnecessary Remote Access: Unless essential, turn off remote access to your router to prevent external threats.

• Ignoring Guest Networks: Use the guest network feature for visitors to keep them separate from your primary network. This limits their access to sensitive files and devices.

• Smart Devices on Main Network: Assign smart home gadgets to a guest network. This prevents potential security lapses from affecting your main devices.

• NOTE Hiding your Wi-Fi network means disabling the “SSID broadcast” feature on your router, making the network name (SSID) invisible to most users. While it might seem like a smart security measure, there are several problems associated with it: It can give you a false sense of security, because hiding your SSID doesn’t make your network invisible to everyone. People with the right tools or software can still detect hidden networks and their SSIDs. Also, every time you want to add a new device to your network, you’ll need to manually input the SSID and password since the network won’t appear in the list of available Wi-Fi connections. This can be inconvenient and troublesome, especially for less tech-savvy individuals.

Connection usually takes longer to establish because the device has to actively search for the SSID instead of passively detecting it, and not all devices handle hidden networks well. Some struggle to connect or maintain a stable connection to hidden SSIDs. Most importantly hiding your SSID is not a substitute for implementing robust security measures, such as strong encryption (like WPA3) and a solid password.

Hopefully I’ve helped you understand a little better how to protect your home Wi-Fi so that you can stream and surf safely.

GOODWOOD REVIVAL 2023

BY PETER LONG – FELPHAM RESIDENT STUDYING ENGLISH LITERATURE The Revival is an event comprising of a series of races at Goodwood motor circuit in West Sussex which features pre-1966 race cars. Set amongst the rolling green hills of the South Downs, Revival boasts many world firsts including one of the most expensive start lines in racing with around half a billion pounds worth of Ferrari 250GTO's, Aston Martin DBS, Jaguar E-Types and AC Cobra's swapping paint and drifting through the corners.

Tens of thousands of people attend the Revival (6-8 September 2024), and nearly all of them are dressed up to the nines in period costumes to eat, drink, watch the racing and soak up the bristling atmosphere. Those turning up in t-shirt and jeans look very out of place, and probably feel it too!

Even the outside ticket offices were constructed and painted before having varnish splattered on them to look like they are dusty and a little grubby.

The drivers club was themed like an African safari by the colonial British explorers. Inside continued the theme, but outside had a waterfall constructed, hundreds of museum pieces; bugs in jars, stuffed animals, maps and navigation equipment, made up the entrance hall. The highlight for me was the live tortoises, snakes and lizards who greeted you as you entered.

The drivers themselves play a traditional game of cricket in front of Richmond House before the racing starts creating a quintessentially British scene for the lucky few who get to watch.

Away from the crowds a team of mechanics use the lorry tail lift to support the engine of a 1959 Lotus Climax 15.

shoulders in an incredibly vibrant and unique racing schedule hosted by the 11th Duke of Richmond. And 2023 saw an army of staff create, for the 75th birthday of the motor circuit, an old fashioned circus dubbed ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’, styling the grounds of the motor circuit as a slightly grubby, spit and sawdust style circus. Everything was made to look weathered and a little dilapidated, the detail of which was incredible to behold and be immersed in.

There are plenty of accounts of the show itself, but with my pictures I want to take you for a glance behind the scenes and to places the general public aren’t usually allowed, in doing so you can clearly see just how impressively thought out this event is.

Before the sun comes up and the crowds enter the cars are wrapped up and sleeping.

The Herbert Protocol Caring for vulnerable people, including those with dementia or Alzheimer’s can be challenging.

There is a risk that at some point they may go for a short walk, either into the garden or up the street but may find they then get lost and go missing.

That is why it is important to plan ahead in order to keep them safe. The Herbert Protocol is a form that carers, family or friends of a vulnerable person, or the person themselves can fill in. It contains a list of information to help the police if the person goes missing, including: • medication required • mobile numbers • places previously located • a recent photograph Keeping a completed form saves the worry of trying to recall the information during the stressful time of someone going missing. It also saves time for the police, allowing our search to start sooner.

The police only need the form at the point the person is reported missing. There is no need to hand it to police before then and the form will be returned to you once the person is found.

The initiative is named after George Herbert, a war veteran of the Normandy landings, who lived with dementia. He sadly died whilst ‘missing’, trying to find his childhood home.
