Get started in coding for a brighter future Technology runs the world. Almost everything we touch these days has a computer inside. From the obvious things like our laptops and smartphones all the way down to our televisions, cars, fridges, and even toasters. Many of these are now also connected to the Internet and large software systems collect and analyse our information 24 hours a day. As our demand for technology increases every year society is in desperate need of more people who can build and program these devices and software. Our school system has finally caught on to this idea and started to bring computer science into the classroom but there is a nationwide shortage of specialist teachers. But outside of schools there is a fantastic eco-system of passionate companies and individuals who want to develop the next generation of software and electronics developers. You just need to know where to look and where to start. The biggest hurdle in exciting your child about technology is to capture their imagination. Almost every kid plays computer games, so these are one of the best places to start. Learning how to code computer programs can be tedious, especially using the traditional textbook teaching methods. But put the coding exercises into a gaming environment and suddenly the subject comes to life. Programming your own spaceship to move around the screen and fire bullets opens up a whole world of gaming possibilities.

But where do you start? Technology again comes to our rescue, this time in the form of YouTube, probably the best home learning tool there is. You'll find a whole range of tutorials and exercises all based around learning to code by writing your own games programs. But the sheer amount and variety of these videos can be overwhelming. Which one will work for your child? Is the tutorial at the right level? What happens if your child gets stuck? To cut through the confusion I've been developing games programming courses for 10's and over to take them from absolutely zero experience through to Alevel programming standards and beyond. I've been through the process with my own 10-year-old. I've seen his frustration when things are hard to set up, don't work first time or simply left him stranded with no idea what to do. My course uses software that installs in under a minute and lets you get your first game up and running in less than half an hour, all using "proper typed in code" as my son calls it. From there they can take one of the full programming courses and learn all the software techniques needed to write your own programs. Everything, including all the software is absolutely free. So why not have a look at bytesnbits.co.uk and get your child on the road to becoming the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. By Robert Grant

This month - Pots of cabbage November can be a bit of a grey, miserable month. My kids would call it ‘meh’. I like to inject some colour with winter bedding plants. A cheerful pot by the front door can make you smile on the gloomiest morning. Obviously, the choice of plants for winter is not as large as during the summer months but there are enough varieties around to make very attractive combinations for pots. My favourite plant for winter pots has to be the ornamental cabbage. These robust beauties come in wonderful colours including cream, pink and purple – with either attractive frilly or very spiky leaves. They pair beautifully with winter-flowering pansies and hardy cyclamen. Try planting three pots of different sizes using a colour scheme which co-ordinates with the cabbages. Plant a 50cm / 20inch pot with four large ornamental frilly cabbages surrounding a central spiky one, to give some height to the display. Then choose a smaller pot (38cm / 15inches) and plant one frilly ornamental cabbage surrounded by pink and purple winter-flowering pansies. Finally plant a small pot (25cm / 10inches) with a mixture of hardy cyclamen and white pansies. The resulting display will give you pleasure through November, December and January.

Use a good general-purpose compost. There are mixes specifically made for use in containers, which provide the essential drainage that plants living in pots need. Make sure you place plenty of drainage material in the bottom of the pots. A good compost will contain enough slow release fertiliser to maintain the plants for several weeks during autumn and winter. If they still going strong as winter turns to you can give them a bit of a feed, but by February or March you will want to think about replanting your pots with spring bedding. Think about gravel – I like to use a layer of gravel over the soil of my winter pots for several reasons. It gives the planted pots an attractive finish, keeps rain from splashing back on to the plants, provides some insulation for the soil and reflects light and warmth in any winter sun thus creating a little microclimate in which the plants will be happier. Water them! The plants will need moisture around their roots so water as needed unless the soil in the container is frozen. Do not water frozen pots because the plants are unable to absorb the water. Happy gardening. By Rachael Leverton

Tips Select a frostproof container because these pots need to withstand wintery conditions. The most dependable pots are made of fibreglass, lead, iron, heavy plastic, or stone. Most terracotta will crack in cold temperatures, but some glazed varieties are frost-proof. To contact Felpham in Focus please email infocusmagazines@btinternet.com

Stop straws - If a straw is a must, instead of a plastic one purchase a reusable stainlesssteel straw and carry it with you. Invest in reusable produce bags - A single plastic bag can take 1,000 years to degrade. Purchase or make your own reusable produce bag but be sure to wash them often. Give up the gum – Chewing gum is made of a synthetic rubber which is actually plastic! Buy boxes over bottles - If your laundry detergent comes in a box it will be more easily recycled than a plastic bottle. Buy from bulk bins - If possible, purchase food, like cereal, pasta, and rice from bulk bins using your own container or bag. Not only will you save on packaging you'll also save money. Take your own cup to coffee shops Some establishments offer a reduction in price for this!

Ditch the disposables Disposable nappies are a huge source of landfill. Modern cloth nappies are nothing like the monstrosities of yesteryear. Check them out, reduce your baby's carbon footprint and save money in the process. Squeeze your own - Make your own fresh squeezed juice or eat fruit instead of buying juice in plastic bottles. It's healthier and better for the environment. Lead with your lunch - Pack your own lunch in reusable containers and bags. Use a real razor - with replaceable blades instead of a plastic disposable razor. These are all simple steps but if more of us follow them they have the potential to make a big impact on our collective plastic footprint. By Kath McLean

Enhance your home with fragrance What’s the first thing a guest notices when they walk into your home? Your antique coat stand? The ornate mirror? The pristine hardwood flooring? No, it’s actually the smell. Smell is our most powerful sense and will override the other four senses if something foul wafts our way. So, if your house smells like musty wet dog, stinky shoes, or last night’s fish supper, none of the other details will matter. How your home smells leaves an impression on visitors so it’s nice to make that impression a good one, and of course it’s nicer for you too; after all you live there! There’s a whole industry devoted to home fragrance, so you have lots of choice. But the secret to a nose-friendly atmosphere isn’t synthetic scents. Aside from being overly perfumed, they often contain chemicals that can irritate some sensitive people, particularly asthma and migraine sufferers. Let the outside in - The simplest most effective way to freshen up your home is to open doors and windows yet very few of us do it on a daily basis. Stale air is a health hazard and a mood zapper. I’m not suggesting that you leave the windows open all day in November, but just five minutes will give you an instant, and totally free, air refresh. Grow an indoor herb garden - Fresh herbs such as basil and mint give off a lovely aroma in the kitchen. If you’re feeling ambitious try planting a herb box overflowing with marjoram, lemon balm and rosemary. Sweep your hand across them to agitate the foliage and spread the fragrance around the room. Chop up a few lemons and limes - For a quick and easy fresh smell, you can’t beat citrus. Slice a few lemons, limes and oranges into thin wheels and bake them at a very low temperature for several hours until they are dry to the touch.

You can pretty much forget about them while they are in the oven except for the fact your house will smell incredible. When they are done you can make potpourri. Thread some on a string with a cinnamon stick and some star anise and hang in your kitchen or pop them in a pretty glass bowl. Bonus tips Make citrus salt - Grind the citrus wheels to a powder in a spice grinder and mix with flaked sea salt. Make citrus sugar - Same as above but mix with sugar. Make sweets - Dip them in dark chocolate and sprinkle with flaky sea salt.

Buy quality scented candles - Organic beeswax scented candles are very different to synthetic chemically fragranced varieties. Try them and you won’t look back. If you are wondering which scents to try, fresh citrus scents have universal appeal; incense and patchouli are lovely at this time of year. Vanilla has long been named as the most popular choice among air-freshener companies and in candle form it takes on an even warmer, more mellow quality. Make your own air freshener - For a quick -fix, all-natural air freshener, fill a pan with water, add fresh rosemary or lavender and bring to the boil, then simmer for an hour and let the vapours drift around the house, scenting the air. Later, you can let the mixture cool and decant the liquid into a spray bottle. Store in the fridge and spritz a little as needed. By Sarah Davey

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton Murder mystery stories have been popular for centuries. However, I would say that you have probably never come across a murder mystery story quite like this. Debut author, Stuart Turton, admits to being inspired by the novels of Agatha Christie, but this is far from the likes of Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot. Set in a large country house in the early 20th century our protagonist wakes up in the middle of a wood. He is not wearing his own clothes and he soon realises that he is not in his own body. Confused by what is going on he hears a gun shot and stumbles his way through the wood to Blackheath House. He is greeted by a man who calls him Sebastian Bell, but this name means nothing to him. Eventually he is visited by a mysterious man in a plague doctor’s mask. Our protagonist is called Aidan Bishop and he has until the end of the day to solve a murder. If he fails then the day will start all over again, but this time Aidan will not be Sebastian Bell. He will live the same day over in eight different ‘hosts’ and so he has eight days to solve the murder of Evelyn Hardcastle. Evelyn has been murdered hundreds of times. Part Agatha Christie, part Quantum Leap, this novel will keep you guessing with plot twists appearing throughout. Oh, and expect to feel confused: Turton has done

a stunning job of weaving the eight different days together. Just go with it and enjoy the journey! Enchanted Palace by Rosie Banks It is clear from the minute you look at this book who it is aimed at. A pink and sparkly cover welcomes young readers into the world of ‘The Secret Kingdom’. This is the first instalment of this successful series of books that follow the adventures of best friends Ellie, Summer, and Jasmine. As the book begins, the three friends are helping their teacher run a stall at their local jumble sale. As they are packing up, they find a strange-looking locked wooden box. Too late to sell it they take it home with them to try and open. What happens when they do shows them a world they never knew existed: The Secret Kingdom. King Merry needs their help. His wicked sister, Queen Malice is plotting to destroy the kingdom and turn it from a joyful place, full of unicorns, fairies, and mermaids, into a dull and dreary land, making everyone as miserable as she is. Can Ellie, Summer, and Jasmine, solve the riddles that will let them save the Secret Kingdom from the Queen? Join them on an adventure of a lifetime, riding on the backs of the royal swans and rainbow slides.

Blakes Mead Art Trail (Felpham) This months trek follows on from the success of the Bersted Park Art Trail and continues the theme by exploring the wooden sculptures situated within the new Blakes Mead housing estate in Felpham. These works of art have been commissioned by ADC and funded by the developers of the estate to bring some magnificent features. This local trail is accessible to all, starting at the Felpham Community Centre it takes in eight sculptures that have been created by local chainsaw carver Simon Groves and are designed to reflect Felpham’s connection with the sea, agriculture, nature and William Blake. The first sculpture situated by the community centre is a ‘Trail Guide*’ that gives details where the other seven sculptures can be found. This route differs from the Bersted Park trail as it is more developed, however this article details the best way to navigate around the trail taking in as many green spaces as possible. From the community centre follow the public footpath towards Felpham. The first sculpture sited at the end of a grassed area and centred between a triangle of three newly planted Oak trees is a 'Giant Acorn*’ that represents the wood used for the sculptures and will change in perspective as the oak trees surrounding it grow taller. Continue on the footpath and over a small bridge that is crossing one of the many flood relief tributaries to another small open grassed area where a giant ‘Sycamore Seed’ has been carved out as a bench and shaped as a giant replica of the seed. Join the cycle track that leads away from Felpham and which borders the western end of the estate to the main A259. At this point a public amenity space is being created and great views can be had of the south downs. Take a right and follow the grassed areas behind the raised tree laden bank which provides a sound barrier from the road. Walking round the flood relief ponds that are extremely dry at the moment to the far end of the recreation field and take a rest on the ‘Animal Tracks Bench’, which is very simple in design but cleverly features the wild tracks of the rabbit, heron and deer all of which can be spotted nearby, particularly so if extending your walk to the fields beyond. Continue to follow the northern border, past more relief ponds and on a small grassed circle where paths converge is the ‘The Seaside Totem Pole’ that links Felpham with the sea, it has been carved very cleverly incorporating many creatures and features of the sea, How many can you see? Every time I look at it I find something different. Still keeping to the edge, cross the entry road and remain on the grass, just before a further play park is the amazing ‘Tyger Tyger Bench’ which is a link to William Blake depicting his famous poem. This sculpture showcases a life size tiger on a bench, that is so realistic it’s unreal. From here pass amongst the trees that have been kept in place and once made up the original footpath from the end of Normans Drive to estate edge and follow to the pond that was put in with fountains as a decorative feature to the estate outside the first show homes that were built. Aptly situated by this pond is the ‘Kingfisher statue’, towering above the ducks below. Look carefully as fish can be seen in the pond and herons are often seen here stalking them. The fountains have long gone but the pond remains as a lovely feature. A short cut can be taken to the last carving but i prefer to continue around the edge, passing through the trees to the last flood relief pond and back through to the far end of the trail where there is the ‘Way Marker’ indicating local sites in Blakes Mead and beyond, the base it sits on features Felpham’s links to agriculture and farming. Head in the direction of ‘Felpham Rec’ sign and work your way back to the community centre to complete this trail. *Sculptures not in place at time of writing but are due to be installed soon.

Local History © S. Endacott In November we have Remembrance Sunday, when we remember the men and women who went to war. However how many people will remember, or even be aware of the construc on of sea planes down in Middleton on Sea during the First World War. It started in 1909 when Norman Thompson and Electrical Engineer became interested in Aeronau cs. He secured monies from a Dr. White a wealthy friend and they joined together to design an aircra . At the start of the war in 1914 they designed two flying boats to compete in a race. The race was actually cancelled due to the start of the war, but a single engine aircra was successful and eight more were built for the RNAS as the White and Thompson No. 3, and a further 10 known as the Bognor Bloated were pro‐ duced. By 1915 Dr. White le to join the Royal Army Medical Corps, this was when the company became known as the Normal Thompson Flight Company The company increased and made further aircra , with more orders in 1917 bringing total produced to 50. Following a change in policy on an ‐submarine air‐ cra , the final contract for 20 was cancelled and along with other problems the Company went into receivership in April 1918. Whilst this Company and their produc on was short lived, there were many people employed on this produc on, and people were taken by motor buses from Bognor down to Middleton on Sea to work their shi this was the only way to get to work due to the employees not having cars of course, and there was no regular bus service, One of the aircraŌ in Middleton on Sea especially during the war me period.

The state of our nature Of 8431 UK species assessed, one in seven is at risk of extinction. This frightening statistic is just one of the startling and alarming, facts to come out of the 2019 State of Nature Report released last month. The RSPB, Marine Conservation Society, World Wildlife Fund, Wildlife Trusts and Plantlife are among over 70 wildlife organisations, plus government agencies that have joined forces to pool data and expertise, giving the clearest picture to date of the status of our species. Since rigorous scientific monitoring began in the 1970s, there has been a 13% decline in average abundance across wildlife studied and the declines are continuing unabated. The main causes are well documented – changes in the way we manage our land for agriculture, climate change, urbanisation, pollution, how we manage our woodlands and freshwater, invasive non-native species and overfishing. Similarly, the solutions, both at government level and what we can do as individuals, have been much discussed and I make no apologies for also suggesting becoming a member and, or volunteering for one or more of the many wildlife charities that contributed to the report. The underlying message is clear. We as a species, are affecting the environment around us to detriment of the natural world, and only we can change this. To view the full report go to www.nbn.org.uk/stateofnature2019/reports/ This month sees the return of our winter wildfowl and wadBrent geese ers. To think that in my short lifetime their winter soundtrack could be of thing of the past as our coastline and countryside changes is hard to bear. The constant honking and babbling of brent geese, accompanied by the whistling of wigeon and teal, lifts my spirits in the bleaker months. It can be overcast and foreboding, but that sound simply makes me smile and the stresses of modern life slip away. Of course when trying to identify birds and other creatures, it helps to have a good pair of binoculars or a telescope. However, with so many different types of Teal optics on the market it can be difficult to know where to start. With this in mind we have a Binocular and Telescope Open Day on Saturday 07 December at our Visitor Centre on the B2145 south of Chichester. Here you can try out a selection, get advice from our expert optics team and treat yourself or buy a Christmas present for a loved one.

November Sunday 03 November, Medmerry by Bike. Covering more ground whilst being active, discover the wildlife and history of Medmerry with this guided cycle ride. Merlin, brent geese, mergansers and corn buntings are among the many potential sightings. 10am (duration 4 hours), meet at Pagham Harbour Visitor Centre PO20 7NE at 9.45am. Please note participants must provide their own cycle and helmet in appropriate condition. Booking essential £7 per person / £4 members Sunday 17 November, Discover Pagham Harbour (west) Guided Walk. On a rising tide, large numbers of wildfowl and waders will be brought ever closer to us. The cast of our ‘West Side’ story includes winter arrivals such as brent geese, pintail, wigeon and teal, along with our many resident birds. This gentle 4 mile walk combines wildlife with the Harbours historic past. 10am (duration 3½ hours) Booking essential, £7 per person / £4 members

Make Your Own Festive Cards at Chichester Cathedral Why not unleash your creative side and make something unique for friends and family in the run up to the Festive Season? Chichester Cathedral is holding a 'Printed Seasonal Cards' adult Craft workshop with professional Printmaker, Cath Bristow, in which you can learn the basics of relief printing and produce beautiful handmade cards. You will be able to design your artwork, prepare and cut your soft lino block and print your cards by hand. Experimenting with coloured inks and papers, at the end of the day you will take away a set of cards and gift tags, as well as your carved lino block so that you can carry on printing at home. For your designs, you may be inspired by the Cathedral as a starting point or even bring along images of your own to translate into a seasonal design. The workshop runs at the Cathedral on Thursday 14 November from 10am – 3pm and costs £50pp. Please call 01243 782595 or visit www.chichestercathedral.org.uk for ticket details. If you would like to see more, Cath Bristow’s prints will be available to purchase in the Cathedral’s Cloisters Shop from 2 October to 19 November.

FELPHAM PARISH COUNCIL

Felpham Community Hall Presenters and groups using the meeting room will now benefit from the installation of a new digital projector. The Manager welcomes all enquiries for use of the hall and will accommodate new users wherever possible. Felpham’s Open Spaces A considerable amount of work has been carried out to the pavilion at King George V Field by Arun District Council and the Snook’s Corner Group continue their exemplary monitoring and work at Longbrook Park. We understand that light is finally soon to be restored at Old Rectory Gardens and various decisions are still to be made regarding some of the remaining open space at Blakes Mead. The level of concern that has followed a recent decision to fence off the Western Greensward on the Sea Front reminds us how much we all value our Open Spaces whether we live in an apartment where we value our views or balconies, houses with gardens or that walk through the park or along the Sea Front. Open Space gives us so much benefit and we as residents and visitors of all ages share the health and wellbeing opportunities that it provides, so it is important to do our bit. We need to ensure that we do all that is necessary to keep spaces free of rubbish and waste through disposal in the bins provided. Good News for Residents Parking at the far end of Sea Road causing blocking difficulties will shortly be eased as West Sussex County Council have agreed to extend the yellow lines to the edge of the steps. Fun on the Prom 2020 Another spectacular event is planned, the date will be announced soon. Enthusiastic volunteers needed. Emergency Resilience The next meeting will take place on Thursday 31st October at 6.15 p.m. Location Felpham Community Hall, Meaden Way, Felpham PO22 8FA. Car parking is available. The environment agency will be attending and will be delivering part of the programme. All residents are invited and encouraged to participate in this valuable initiative.
