Hello, I am sorry if our front cover this month makes you a bit cross-eyed! It is ten years this month since we launched Felpham in Focus! Where has that time gone? My children were all so little back then & now they are flying the nest. This month’s cover features some of my favourites from over the years, I hope you enjoy them too! I would like to thank all the businesses who advertise here. Some of them, May’s Estate Agents, White Horses Bed & Breakfast and Rumshack Events have been with me continuously from the very first edition when they took a huge leap of faith to support me in this venture. It’s over a century since more than nine million soldiers were killed during the First World War. The last of the veterans from that era are dead and many young people know little about the causes and devastating aftermath of the conflict. Many refuse to wear a poppy because they think it glorifies war. Perhaps it’s more important than ever that we discuss the poppy’s place in history. Much of the worst fighting in World War 1 took place in Flanders, the western part of Belgium. The area suffered terribly, with homes, farms, roads and trees all completely destroyed. The land became a bleak, muddy graveyard for the thousands of soldiers who fell there. One plant, however, thrived in the disturbed soil and that was the poppy. Year after year, as the warm weather arrived, the poppies bloomed and turned the grim bare ground into a sea of red. At that time, fighting in Flanders was a young Lieutenant, Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian physician. In May 1915, his close friend and fellow soldier was killed in action. Seeing the poppies growing alongside his grave moved McCrae to write the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, which was later published in Punch magazine.

In 1921, Anna E Guerin started making artificial poppies in France and gained the support of Field Marshal Douglas Haig, founder of the Royal British Legion. The first poppy appeal was held on Armistice Day 1921. It was hugely popular and, despite a recommended selling price of threepence per poppy, single petals sold for £5. In all, the appeal raised £106,000 – that’s nearly £30 million in today’s terms! In recent years some people have chosen to wear a white poppy, either instead of or alongside a traditional red one. White poppies symbolise pacifism and also remember the civilians killed in conflicts past and present, as well as the soldiers. The idea is not a modern one as I originally assumed; it was initially put forward in 1926 by the No More War Movement, and the first white poppies were sold by the Cooperative Women’s Guild in 1933. They are now distributed by the Peace Pledge Union, a British pacifist non-governmental organisation that works for a world without war.

Local History

I have recently been searching through various guide books, and came across a Bognor Regis guide for 1930. Mainly written with various images, maps and some superb advertisements. One section took my interest. Entitled ‘Country Rambles,’ it consists of various walks around the area of varying lengths. One in particular took my interest. It was a three mile walk from Bognor to Felpham. This walk started at the Arcade and proceeded along London Road to the railway bridge and then to Chichester Road and the White Horse Inn. Now this would create a problem today as that particular Inn does not exist and is now a Children’s Nursery. The next instruction takes you through South Bersted to the Friary Arms Inn. Today you could go along this route, but you would now have to take care crossing the busy dual carriage way on the way to the out of town shopping on Shripney Road. Next apparently you cross the railway line at the end of the lane. Here there is currently much discussion on the demolition and replacement of this bridge. Now we are instructed to cross the fields on the left to Felpham Church. The view today would be so different to the view in 1930, with the new University, Butlin’s and of course the By-pass. The next instruction becomes so much easier, with the instruction of proceeding to the Post Office, then the Fox and finally to the sea, for your return along the shore, where even the promenade had not yet been constructed, as we know it today. Professor Stewart's Casebook of Mathematical Mysteries by Ian Stewart Like its wildly popular predecessors Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities and Hoard of Mathematical Treasures, Professor Stewart's third book is a miscellany of over 150 mathematical curios and conundrums. He manages the subtle balancing act of appealing to all. Those with a mathematical background will find much to enjoy but so will those whose abiding memory of school maths is counting the minutes until the end-of-lesson bell. He does write about complicated things but in his hands it all becomes understandable and even fun. Casebook is packed full of humour. It follows the adventures of the hapless detective Hemlock Soames and his sidekick Dr John Watsup. By a remarkable coincidence they live at 222B Baker Street, just across the road from their more illustrious neighbour...who can never be mentioned by name. The book is designed to be read, and shared, in bite-sized chunks and it is the sharing aspect which makes this irresistible. You’ll just have to try out the number games and puzzles on members of your family and you won’t be able to stop yourself from sharing all the fascinating facts and tricks such as 'The Case of the Face-Down Aces', a mathematical magic trick of quite devilish cunning... Ranging from one-liners to four-page investigations from the frontiers of mathematical research, the Casebook is Professor Stewart at his challenging and entertaining best.

Harvesting Dreams: Hundertwasser for Kids - Barbara Stieff You may never have heard of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, but he was an eccentric artist, humanitarian, environmentalist and architect. He dedicated his life to the beautification of the world in which we live. In this colourful, quirky book Barbara Stieff introduces children to Hundertwasser’s free-thinking, inspirational approach to art and the environment. There is something about Hundertwasser’s vibrant, exciting work which appeals to children and adults alike. Most children enjoy colouring and love bright colours but often become bogged down with making things look ‘right’ rather than developing their own creative style. Likewise, adults don’t always fully appreciate children’s imaginative artwork and gently admonish that cows are not pink with yellow stripes… when of course there’s no good reason why they shouldn’t be any colour at all in a painting. Stieff’s engaging and slightly off-the-wall style suits the book. She spent many years as an art educator at ZOOM, a children’s museum in Vienna and it shows. The book is packed with fun projects and suggestions for stretching children’s imaginations in an artistic but also in a more general way. It is also lavishly illustrated with Hundertwasser’s work which makes it a beautiful decorative item in its own right; a fact of which Hundertwasser would certainly have approved. By Willow Coby

Hilltops and Highways

This months trek is a circular walk of 14km (9 miles) from Arundel Bridge to the top of Barpham Hill and back taking in some fine views along the route. This trek is inspired by a DofE expedition that I recently assessed. Starting at Arundel Bridge head east along the river passing the Lido, which has been popular with locals since 1960. The 16th Duke of Norfolk donated the land in celebration of his daughter, Lady Anne’s 21st Birthday. After a period of closure and refurbishment the Lido is back open and now run as a charity. Continue along the raised river bank further out of the town and into the open farmland, following the river that was once ‘London’s Lost Route To The Sea’. At Warningcamp the railway meets the river and at this point there would once have been a wharf supplying local trade to the villages. Carefully cross the railway and follow the Monarchs Way through the sleepy hamlet, along the road and then into the woods that leads through a valley of Warningcamp Hill. The path will start to rise and after a short steep incline will bring you up to Gibbets Piece, named after the gibbeting of Jack Upperton. A post has been placed as a memorial to the Wepham resident who was executed in Horsham in 1771. Jack was a poor labourer and in his 60s when he and an accomplice robbed the local postman, who was carrying mail to Arundel along the old Lewes to Chichester highway. Although only a pound was netted in the robbery, Jack was caught by locals that noticed his increased spending. Following his execution Jacks tarred body was placed in the gibbet as an example to others and to also ward off similar crimes. This old highway has long been downgraded to a bridleway and forms part of the Monarchs Way. It leads into and is surrounded by the woods of Angmering Park when in the spring blooms into mists of blue with many bluebells on the forest floor. Follow this old highway through the mixed woods of Angmering Park, at the clearing head north leaving the Monarchs Way and ascend to the triangulation point at the top of Barpham Hill some 142m above sea level. On a good day terrific views can be had here reaching far along the coast and the Rampion wind farm is clearly seen standing prominently out to sea. Barpham itself now only consists of two farms but in 12c there was a church and village near Upper Barpham Farm, however in 1348 the black death swept through the village and many locals were buried in the vicinity. The church no longer exists and only small traces of it can be found today. Many sheep dominate the hills now. Descend from the top of Barpham Hill and pick up the steep path down the side of Perry Hill to Coombe Lane and into Burpham. This path is part of an old medieval route known as the ‘Lepers Way’ that linked an old leper colony at Lee Farm with the church of St Mary in Burpham. There is a window that still exists today known as the lepers window through which the poor victims of this disease could view the service and be blessed by the priest inside the church. Opposite the church is The George pub built in 1738 and a great opportunity for some refreshment. From the pub head across the village green and down ‘Jacobs Ladder’ once part of a saxon fort that defended the village from the Vikings and later was used by smugglers when coming from the river to the pub with their brandy and silks. The base of the steps meet up with the River Arun which leads to an easy route back through Warningcamp to Arundel Bridge to complete the trek. Autumnal and delicious Preparation time: 10 mins

Method

Cooking time: 20 mins

Heat 1tbsp olive oil in a heavy-based saucepan. When hot add the chopped pancetta or bacon, then cook for a few mins. Add remaining oil and the onion. Cook for 5 mins, until the onion becomes soft and the pancetta becomes crispy.

Serves: 4 Ingredients 3 tbsp olive oil 140g Pancetta or bacon, cut into cubes 1 Small onion, thinly sliced 25g Butter 500g/1lb 2oz Pumpkin or butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and diced 20g Fresh sage, finely shredded 400g Pasta (I used spaghetti) 25g Freshly grated parmesan Parmesan, plus extra to serve

Stir in the butter until melted, then add the diced pumpkin or squash and the sage. Stir well to combine, then season well. Cover and cook for 6-10 mins, stirring occasionally until the pumpkin is soft, but not mushy. Meanwhile, cook the pasta in salted boiling water until itâ€™s soft but with a little bite remaining. Drain and add to the pumpkin mixture. Stir in the Parmesan and season. Serve in pasta bowls sprinkled with extra Parmesan.

As many as one in six people suffer with a low mood in winter, and a small number of these will suffer with the more extreme Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) SAD sufferers are less able to control their serotonin levels in the absence of sunlight and if serotonin levels drop too low, so will your mood. Here are five ways to raise your serotonin levels even in the coldest, darkest months. Lighten up - As lack of sunlight is the problem, more light could be a solution. Light boxes are available that provide levels of brightness which can elevate your brain's serotonin levels. Exercise - There's evidence that aerobic exercise not only boosts your brain's levels of serotonin but also keeps those levels elevated for hours after your workout.

Laugh - A study in Norway found that laughing with friends, watching a funny movie or doing something that briefly improves your mood may stoke your brain's levels of serotonin. Step outside - Research shows that walking in nature â€” especially with other people â€” is an effective way to combat depression. Spending at least 30 minutes a day outdoors even during the cold winter months may offset the seasonal drops in serotonin. Physical contact - Massage has been proven to increase your brain and body's levels of serotonin. The soothing experience significantly reduces the blues.

RSPB Pagham Harbour & Medmerry

Sounds of the saltmarsh November sees a welcome return of our winter wildfowl to Pagham Harbour and Medmerry. Honks, quacks, whistles and squeals start to drift out across the saltmarsh that went so eerily quiet through October. This is the beginnings of our winter soundtrack, culminating in vast flocks of geese, ducks and waders noisily using the reserves to shelter, roost and feed during the hardest months of the year. Pagham Harbour is internationally important for many of these birds and in particular brent geese and pintail ducks. The brent goose is a small, dark, plump goose, similar in size to a mallard duck, with a white undertail and a small white neck patch. There are two distinct races of brent geese. Dark-bellied brents breed in northern Russia, while the pale bellied race breeds mainly in Canada and Greenland. Our brent goose population is predominantly dark bellied although every year a few pale bellied brent geese, which winter mainly in Ireland, are found mixed in among them. They feed in flocks, sometimes on the water upending like ducks to reach vegetation beneath the surface, sometimes grazing in the surrounding fields. Pintail ducks are arguably our most elegant waterfowl with long graceful necks. The males have a thin white stripe running down from their chocolate coloured heads and long thin tapering tail feathers that give rise to their name. They feed on the water by dabbling much like the brent geese but supplement their diet of plant matter with snails and shrimps. They in turn are joined by vast numbers wigeon and teal ducks. Male wigeon sport a very ‘punk-like’ yellow stripe across the top of their chestnut heads and a pink breast. A yellow bottom gives away the male teal, along with its green eye-patch that extends to the back of its chestnut head down to a grey body. The brents constant babble of low honking, punctuated by the shrill whistles of wigeon and squeals of teal, accompanied by the quacking of a myriad of overwintering ducks is the unmistakable sound of the saltmarsh during winter. Ducks and geese generally have distinctive feather patterns helping to identify them apart more easily. However, trying to distinguish between many of the waders that visit our reserves can be much more tricky. Help is at hand – starting in November, we are running a Waders for Beginners course. Oh, those autumn leaves. So pretty on the trees but they can be rather inconvenient in the garden. If they drift too deep on the lawn the grass underneath will die so there’s nothing to do but rake them up. However, these fallen leaves are an autumn gift from nature and with them you can create leaf mould. Leaf mould is free garden nourishment, and it’s like feeding your soil with the finest fillet steak. Leaf mould is what’s left when the dead, fallen leaves from deciduous trees and shrubs are heaped up and allowed to rot down. As they slowly decompose, only the toughest bits remain, eventually forming crumbly, dark brown crumbs, a bit like chocolate sprinkles. Leaf mould is easy to make, a delight to handle, and you can’t possibly overfeed your soil with it. Micro-organisms are the driving factor, performing an alchemy that gives the finished product an almost magical quality. Its fibrous nature retains moisture and enables free drainage, which means it also makes a great mulch for trilliums or wood anemones, whose natural habitat is woodland. I only collect leaves where necessary. Where they have fallen and are not obscuring the grass I leave them for the earthworms to pull into their burrows. Simply sweeping leaves off paths and decking or patios will keep the garden looking cared for. I also remove any that have drifted around my herb garden because herbs like to breathe. These tasks alone give me enough leaves to create plenty of lovely leaf mould. If you have enough room, create a separate leaf heap rather than simply adding leaves to compost. It’s quite simple to construct a leaf cage using chicken wire and posts. You can even bag your leaves in punctured black bin bags and put them in an out-of-the-way corner. The puncturing is necessary to allow air to circulate. A leaf heap made this autumn will be ready by next autumn. While you’re tidying up the leaves it can be tempting to cut down faded perennials. But if you leave them, in a month or so you will find they have turned into wonderful sculptural winter skeletons which look incredibly beautiful in the frosts. It’s all down to personal taste of course, but I often leave perennials standing until February or March simply to provide a bit of interest over the winter. Happy gardening By Rachael Leverton

Receiving your annual flu jab is the best way to protect yourself and your family from the potential dangerous flu virus which will decrease the need for doctor’s visits, missed work and school.

The flu vaccination is available from September through to November where you will be able to book an appointment in our “Flu clinics” which we will be running throughout the weeks and on Saturday mornings at our Practice. There are 3 types of vaccines :

 Adjuvanted trivalent flu vaccine (aTIV) – This is a licensed vaccine for people aged 65 years and over that is recommended by the Joint Committee on Vaccines and Immunisations (JCVI)

 Quadrivalent vaccine (QIV) – This is recommended for children aged 6 months to 2 years and in adults from 18 to less than 65 years of age who are at increased risk from the flu

 Live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) – This is a nasal spray and is licensed for children and young people from 2 years old to less than 18 years of age

I’ve always been a fan of Wimbledon, and ever since my older brother came home from a school trip, excitedly describing his visit to Centre Court, I’ve had a dream to visit the championship myself. If a visit to Wimbledon is on your bucket list too, here’s what to do. There are four options. The first is the Public Ballot. To take part, send a SAE to AELTC, PO Box 98, London, SW19 5AE by 19th December latest and you will receive an application form. This needs to be returned by 31st December and grants you entry into the draw for a pair of tickets, but you can’t select which court or day you will visit. Successful entrants will be chosen by random by computer and will be notified by post. Once an offer of tickets has been received, you will need to pay for them online

by debit or credit card. If you’re unsuccessful with the Public Ballot, all is not lost! You can still buy tickets online at Ticketmaster. Several hundred tickets for Centre Court and Court 3 go on sale one and two days before the day of play. They can sell out in seconds and are issued strictly on a first come, first served basis, with a maximum of two tickets allowed per person. If you’re particularly gutsy, you could join The Queue. A limited number of tickets for Centre and Courts 1 and 2 can be purchased on the day, along with several thousand Grounds Passes for courts 3-18. The earlier you join the queue, the more likely you are to get the best tickets, so if it’s one of the show courts you’re after, don’t forget your tent! Finally, you could purchase a hospitality package. This is expensive but offers you the VIP treatment and would really make your visit a day to remember! Memorial Benches This year we have commemorated the end of World War One at our recent Fun on The Prom Event and as we approach Remembrance Sunday. We also hope that residents will be proud of the new commemorative benches that the Parish Council has provided, on their behalf, at the Community Hall, Grassmere Parade and Fisherman’s Gardens. Public Access Defibrillators Further to the Parish Councils installation of defibrillators on Felpham Sea Front and more recently outside of Boots Pharmacy in Felpham Road, we are pleased to announce that we shall shortly be providing another Public Access Defibrillator at Blake’s Mead on the outside wall of the Community Hall. We are continuing to seek and to negotiate other sites to ensure reasonable accessibility to important life saving devices that will help to keep Felpham resilient and safe. Emergency Resilience Members of FERG (Felpham Emergency Resilience Group) were invited to a West Sussex County Council Conference at Horsham. We were invited to present to a Sussex Wide audience the steps that we have taken to establish a community resilience group. Emergency Resilience Planning requires us to continue to recruit and train volunteer helpers in Felpham to ensure that there will always be capacity to respond in any emergency situation. Residents are invited to join this initiative. We are looking to develop a multi skilled capability so whether you are A good communicator or a practical wiz we need you. Please continue to keep the offers coming in. Four Table Top Exercises will be held each year. We are also happy to work with local groups and will come to your meeting at your convenience to give a short talk on how we can work together as a community to achieve Local Emergency Planning and Response.
