Alternatives to dairy Cow’s milk is considered dietary staple by many. It’s rich in protein and important vitamins and minerals, including calcium, phosphorus and B vitamins. But some people can’t or don’t drink cow’s milk at all due to personal preferences, dietary restrictions, allergies or intolerances.

2–3% of children under the age of three are allergic to cow’s milk although most grow out of it. The allergy can cause a range of symptoms, including rashes, upset tummies and even anaphylaxis.

Lactose intolerance is very common.

Lactose is a sugar found in cow’s milk.

People with lactose intolerance cannot digest this sugar so it stays in the digestive tract causing gas and irritation.

Vegans exclude all products from their diet that originate from animals, and some people simply do not like the taste of cow’s milk.

So, what is available for those who prefer a non-dairy alternative?

Soy Milk – Made with either soybeans or soy protein isolate, and often contains thickeners and vegetable oils. It typically has a mild and creamy flavour. It has a similar nutritional make-up to cow’s milk, and works best in cooking, in coffee and on cereal.

Almond Milk (or other nut milks) – This is made with either whole almonds or almond butter and water (cashew, hazelnut and macadamia nut milks are also available). Nut milks have a light texture and a slightly sweet and nutty flavour. They contain fewer calories and

fat than cow’s milk but are also significantly lower in protein and carbohydrates.

They can be added to coffee and tea, used on cereal, mixed in smoothies and used as milk in desserts and baked goods.

Coconut Milk - Made from water and the white flesh of brown coconuts. It has a creamy texture and a sweet, subtle coconut flavour. It contains less fat than cow’s milk and significantly less protein and carbohydrates. It can be used on cereal and in smoothies and cooking.

Oat Milk – Made from a mixture of oats and water. It is high in soluble fibre, which is good for gut health. It is naturally sweet with a mild flavour and can be used in cooking in the same way as cow’s milk. It is also good for use on cereal or in smoothies.

Rice Milk - Made from milled white or brown rice and water this is the least likely milk substitute to trigger allergies, which makes it a safe option for those with allergies or intolerances to dairy, gluten, soy or nuts. It is mild in taste and naturally sweet and is nice to drink on its own as well as in smoothies, or in desserts or over cereal. It is not a good choice for children or the elderly because of its low protein content, and it has a high glycaemic index so is not good for diabetics either.

There is no one milk substitute that is ideal for everyone. The taste, nutrition and cost of these alternatives can vary considerably, so it is worth taking a while to experiment and find those that work best for you.

Refresh your mind - Playing tourist in your own town can make you reconnect with and appreciate it.

Don’t forget to protect your property while you’re away The summer holidays are just around the corner. We put a lot of effort into planning our perfect summer break, but we often don’t put quite as much effort into making sure that while we’re away relaxing our home is safe Most burglars are opportunists, who target empty homes. This means that the holiday season is bonanza time for them.

However, a little preparation can save a lot of distress. 60 percent of burglars gain entrance through rear or side windows and doors so make securing these a priority.

Fences and hedges are the first line of defence against uninvited guests so should act as an effective barrier, rather than just being attractive borders. The Metropolitan Police recommend ‘hostile plants’; plants that are spiky, prickly or very dense. Don’t let them grow too high though, your home should be visible from the street and to your neighbours. The idea is not to provide a hiding place for intruders! Protect the entrance to your property too. If a gate isn’t practical, consider covering pathways with gravel.

Thieves don’t like to announce their presence and the sound of footsteps on gravel is often enough to put them off entering.

Join your Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, or if there isn’t a local scheme, set one up.

Neighbourhood Watch has an excellent track record of deterring opportunistic thieves.

A little vigilance and some common sense go a long way to protecting the things you love. Follow these simple steps and you will be able to relax on holiday knowing your home is as safe as it can be.

Far up in the summer sky…

Walking around our reserves on a warm sunny day in June I revel in the rich continuous outpouring of silvery warbles and trills cascading down from the skies far above me. This is the skylarks’ song and the quintessential sound of the summer countryside. It can be hard to spot this little lark against the bright sky despite its ability to hang in the air on straight angular wings while it delivers its song for several minutes at a time. However, if you see one perched on a post you will discover a simple brown streaked bird which often raises a crest on its head when alarmed or excited.

However, the real masters of the summer sky are far, far higher. Higher still than the skylark, resembling little black anchors, swifts hurtle through the air at break-neck speed, reminiscent of dogfighting WWII pilots, screaming like banshees to one another. These superb fliers only land to breed. From the time the fledglings take their very first flight, they will not touch down again until they make a nest. They do everything on the wing: eat, drink, preen, mate, they even sleep in flight! The nest is built by both adults out of any material that can be gathered on the wing, including feathers, paper, straw, hay and seeds. It is located high up in the roof space under the eaves of old houses and churches where the birds are able to drop into the air from the nest entrance.

For those of you interested in the fortunes of our nestcam ‘reality TV stars’ our tawny owl hatched all three eggs and the fluffy owlets have been delighting us with lovely images. They have grown rapidly and got curious about the world outside their box. Tawny owl chicks remain in the nest for 25 – 30 days before moving out onto nearby branches, an act called ‘branching’. However, they won’t actually fly until approximately 32 -37 days old and will still be dependant on their parents feeding them for a further three months.

The kestrel laid 5 eggs and will incubate for approximately 4 weeks while the two pairs of blue tits laid clutches of eight and nine eggs which are hatching at the time of writing. A pair of sparrows are the latest characters to join the cast, currently building their nest in which they will lay four or five eggs.

Local History

This year many people will be remembering June 6th, 1944 when the country at large was also becoming involved in the D Day landings. We had a wide range of service personnel in our district throughout the war period. In Felpham and Middleton many houses had been taken over by the Royal Navy with the School of Photography. During the war there were also a Canadian Anti-Aircraft battery. In 1942 a Hampden bomber crashed at the end of Sea Road, there is now a plaque there to Royal Naval School of Photography record this tragic event.

Around the coast there were restrictions in various areas with barbed wire and concrete posts. The Canadian Army was responsible for the beach with anti-landing devices, concrete wraps and they mined the area later used to build the Butlin’s holiday centre as we know it today.

Our Pier was also being used during the war when it was renamed HMS St. Barbara and used by naval personnel to have firing practice from the end of the Pier. Numerous Naval men reported that they stayed in Felpham homes for their two weeks stay.

To the north of the town was the Advanced Landing Ground. This airfield was situated at North Bersted and was established for a secret mission. This materialised into the Air Force flying from there to assist the other forces over A pilot with the the D Day situation. It is very difficult for us, today, to visualise how life was ALG during the war in our locality.

Frequent tragic news items about cyberbullying in teenagers might lead us to think that such behaviour is limited to this age group. But it has become as much of a problem for adults, and as adults can be adept at hiding their online identity – and far more malicious and sophisticated in the way they operate, it can be devastating for the victims

harassing you is a co-worker, or if the bullying is occurring on a work-related forum or blog your employer needs to know, this is where the evidence comes into play.

If you are a victim of cyber bullying...

Contact the police - If threats of physical harm are made, or you feel that the bully is dangerous, make a police report. The more evidence you have of the threats, the easier it will be for them to act.

Don't retaliate - Bullies want a reaction. If you do react you will almost certainly escalate the behaviour, and have your response turned against you.

Talk about it - Speak with trusted friends about what you are going through. Many victims feel ashamed, but shame tends to disappear if you share your concerns.

Record Everything - Keep evidence of content: pictures, texts, emails, tweets, status updates that the person has sent or posted about you. If the cyberbullying is occurring on a blog or forum, take screenshots of the post.

Build a case against the person harassing you.

Report Abuse - Every reputable website has a 'Report' feature built in. Use it.

Talk to your employer - If the person

Cut ties - Remove toxic people from your social media circle.

BLOCK – Use the block feature on forums and phones to block the cyber bully at source.

West Sussex Vineyard Trek - Chichester to West Stoke A hike of 14km (8.5 miles) which will ultimately form part of a route that I want to establish linking up the many vineyards of West Sussex. This first section has many contrasts, after starting in the city centre it passes through water meadows and finishes in aromatic bluebell woods. It’s a long, mainly flat linear walk, however much smaller walks can be enjoyed exploring the water meadows and Stoke woods as both have many footpaths and access routes.

The best way to complete this section is to park up in West Stoke car park, take a short walk to the bus stop in East Ashling then catch the bus to Chichester. Timing is crucial here as they only run every 2.5 hours, so not one to miss.

Start at the elaborate 15th century Market Cross in the centre of Chichester, built of Caen stone this structure replaced the previous wooden cross that had been erected on the same site, it was used as a market place giving the poor people of Chichester somewhere to sell their wares.

Head out of the city via the busy West Street passing the 11th century Chichester Cathedral. The 84m tall spire has been a landmark for sailors for many years as it can be seen for miles across the flat marshlands and is in fact the only medieval cathedral that can be seen from the sea. It is well worth spending some time looking around the building, the bell tower and its grounds.

Keep heading west along the straight roads to Fishbourne, a small village that in AD43 was invaded by the romans. Take the footpath south between the houses and leave the urban environment behind as path leads to Fishbourne Meadows. Now silted over the water meadows was once the old roman harbour and is now an AONB and part of the Chichester Harbour. An exceptionally clear stream ‘The Fishbourne’ meanders through the flat surroundings of the meadows along with many other water courses, springs and Mill Leats. This is an area abundant with wildlife, from flora and fauna to wildfowl that can be seen as the route follows the top end of Chichester harbour through reeds higher than many a person before emerging at the waters edge of the Fishbourne Channel with views across to Dell Quay. (Spring tides at this point may mean route is not accessible) After a short walk along the waters edge the route heads inland, A mixture of quiet roads and paths take you through some very fertile arable fields situated on the rural outskirts of Bosham where many different salad crops and vegetables are grown. Head north towards Broadbridge at the old A27, cross the railway and then the new A27, another contrast as the traffic hurtles past underneath on their daily business.

North of the main roads the route heads towards the much more tranquil East Ashling, passing through meadows, cattle fields and private copses before heading west to Ashling Park the first vineyard on the route. The 50 acres of Ashling Park produces sparkling wines from its vineyard that has been planted in a converted hay meadow, with a sheltered position and soil perfect for growing sparkling wine grapes. The vineyard will soon be constructing a visitor centre so that they can showcase their award winning wines and allow tours of the estate.

The last part of the walk takes us into the ancient woodland of Ashling and Stoke Woods, both containing a mix of native broadleaf and conifers trees. A lot of these woods are private but a good network of paths means the best of the area can be explored. The soil of this woodland has been under tree cover and leaf litter for hundreds of years and in the spring it has an amazing display of Bluebells carpeting the forest floor in a blue mist with an incredible sweet aroma. Well worth a return visit.

A Great Musical Tradition at this Year’s Southern Cathedrals Festival A rich and varied musical programme will be presented at Chichester Cathedral this summer as it hosts the annual Southern Cathedrals Festival from 18-21 July. During the Festival, an exciting range of events, performances and services will be held in the Cathedral and other iconic venues around the city centre.

The Festival celebrates the friendship between Chichester, Salisbury and Winchester cathedrals and is a highlight of the musical calendar. It offers sacred choral and organ music presented both as concerts and within worship. Choirs of the three cathedrals can be heard in combination and individually; guest musicians offer performances in a variety of genres from English song to jazz.

At the Cathedral, three choral concerts take their place in the programme alongside four services (one recorded for broadcast by the BBC), recitals, a performance by the superb West Sussex Youth Wind Orchestra, and evening entertainment in the Festival Marquee in the Deanery Garden.

The Festival culminates in a performance of one of the great achievements of Western music, J. S. Bach’s St John Passion, in which the choirs are joined by an exciting line-up of soloists, and the acclaimed period-instrument orchestra ‘Florilegium’.

The Dean of Chichester, The Very Reverend Stephen Waine, commented, “We are delighted to be hosting this celebration of sacred music in the iconic setting of the Cathedral which has been a place of worship for 900 years. We look forward to welcoming returning music lovers and encourage those who have not been before to experience this wonderful music for the first time.”

However, her friend Annabel seems to have vanished – and her other friend Julia does not seem to recognise her, let alone welcome her. Something is clearly wrong.

Having found Annabel’s abandoned diary, Steph sets out to find out what has happened to her friend and quickly becomes involved in the hostess trade. As the novel moves on, Steph’s own quest is intercut with two other storylines. The first, a set of emails from Chastity, an established hostess, shows the harsh reality of the life that Steph is moving into. The second, the memoirs of Mamasan, owner of one of Roppongi’s oldest clubs, explores how the trade has developed and changed over time. By the end of the novel, these strands are drawn together into a twisting conclusion which will keep you gripped.

Quinn has clearly drawn on some of the recent writing about Japan and the significance of the geisha.

However, her portrait is far from romanticised, and whilst her hostesses are certainly as elegant and glamorous as the traditional geisha and maiko, Steph’s world revolves around alcohol, sex and money – a fragile combination which puts her in significant danger.

If the novel has a fault, it is in the slow reveal of Annabel’s diary – it is hard to believe that Steph, curious as she is, would not read the whole book at once. However, this is a minor point, and by stringing this out, Quinn is able to keep us guessing at what has happened to Steph’s friend – and what will happen to Steph herself – making us turn the pages rapidly as the end approaches.

I picked this book up in a used-book shop while on holiday. It appears to be out of print at the moment but there are cheap second hand versions available and I recommend you look one out.

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus – Mo Willems What do small children like best in a picture book? If anyone knows, it is Mo Willems, who spent several years as a scriptwriter for ‘Sesame Street’. And here, what he has hit on is that little word beloved of toddlers – ‘NO!’ The premise of the book is simple – and summed up neatly in the title. The reader needs to stop the pigeon driving the bus while the bus driver is away for a few minutes. However, this is a very determined pigeon. On every page he comes up with a good reason why he could, should and must drive that bus.

Reading this book aloud is a delight. As you read the pigeon’s increasingly desperate attempts to get behind the wheel, your audience can say – or shout – ‘No!’ at each page, usually accompanied by a great deal of giggling. And parents will recognise the toddler’s range of tactics – from pleading, to sulking, to promises to ‘be your best friend’ – all of which are summarily rejected.

With simple drawings and a thoroughly endearing main character, this is ideal to read to pre-school children.

A nice take on sweet ‘n’ sour pork, suitable for the barbecue Preparation time: 20 minutes

Method

Cooking time: 10-15 minutes

Cut the pork into cubes. Heat the sugar and vinegar in a pan over a low heat until the sugar melts. Add the fish sauce and cool. Tip in the pork and mix well so that all the cubes are covered in sauce.

Serves 4 Ingredients 400g Pork fillet 4 tbsp Light muscovado sugar 60ml Cider vinegar 1 tsp Asian fish sauce ½ Small pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into chunks (or use ready prepped fresh pineapple, drained well) 1 Pepper (any colour), deseeded and cut into squares Spanish onion, chopped into chunks Small bunch coriander, chopped (optional)

Heat the barbecue, or a griddle pan or grill. Thread the pork and pineapple onto skewers, alternating pieces with the pepper and Spanish onion. You can use whatever onions you have but Spanish are more delicate in flavour and sweeten nicely when grilled.

Barbecue or griddle the skewers for 3-4 mins each side (you may need to cook them for longer if griddling). Serve with rice or slide into pitta pockets

Sussex Police Campaign to help prevent moped and motorbike the s The campaign, advises riders to “lock, chain and cover your bike”, wherever they park.

Moped and motorbike the s saw a rise in Sussex during last summer and the end of 2018, with various opera ons being put into ac on to tackle this. This advice campaign aims to maintain the recent fall in the s and to support the work that police have already carried out.

Posters will be placed in areas where moped and motorbike thieves are known to operate, as well as bike parks and other areas parking areas.

Advice includes locking your bike in order to make it harder to steal. A chain is another deterrent, making it impossible to wheel away from the parking area. Covering your bike hides what make and model it is, as well as adding another obstacle to would‐be thieves. Also think about parking your vehicle in well‐lit areas and choosing a loca on which has CCTV if possible. All these precau ons add up to a be er‐protected vehicle and fewer incidents of stealing.

Mopeds and motorbikes are frequently stolen in Sussex in order to sell them on or for joy‐riding. Unlike recent occurrences in London, it is unlikely the stolen vehicles would be used for “moped‐enabled crime”, where they are taken in order to carry out a further crime such as robbery, but that does not mean it will not happen.

Inspector Brian McCarthy said: “We are appealing to all riders in Sussex to be vigilant in keeping their vehicles safe whenever they are out on the road. You may just be parking for five minutes, or just leaving your vehicle while you run an errand, but that’s all that is needed for thieves to take advantage of an unlocked moped or motorbike. "Don’t give them the opportunity they are looking for. Your vehicle is worth more than a £10 bike lock, so invest now and keep your property safe.”

This month - Sitting sustainably public concern about deforestation. The council devised a wood-labelling scheme which allows a product to be traced right back down the supply chain from the consumer to its source.

Any product bearing the FSC logo is guaranteed to be from forests which are carefully managed to conserve biodiversity and support local communities.

One of the great pleasures in life has to be sitting outside on a summer evening, glass of wine in hand, gazing in reverie at your precious plot.

But what are you sitting on? Is your furniture environmentally friendly? What about that lovely decking, or your garden shed?

As gardeners we have a responsibility which extends far beyond our boundary.

Trees are vital to the planet. They convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and act as environmental filters, offsetting the effects of pollution. They also provide a habitat for birds and animals.

Like many gardeners I take a keen interest in environmental matters so it came as a shock when I read recently that that every year our tiny island imports more unsustainably produced wood than anywhere else in the world!

A good proportion of this wood is used to make garden buildings, furniture, fencing and decking.

I was thrilled, therefore, to read about the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and their certification programme for sustainable produced and sourced wood?

Unfortunately not all garden suppliers stock products which are FSC approved.

So we need to demand that they do.

The world’s forests are in decline. Some tropical hardwoods are already on the verge of extinction, and temperate forests in the northern hemisphere are also suffering because of unregulated treefelling.

As a gardener and lover of our environment I feel more comfortable knowing that I’m not contributing to the destruction of our planet. If you’re replacing your garden furniture this year, ask to see the FSC certified label.

Q. Is it possible to be environmentally friendly when buying PVC furniture?

A. Yes it is. Many companies are now producing furniture made from recycled PVCs. You’re no longer limited to the standard flimsy offerings either.

It’s now possible to find sturdy benches and picnic tables. Of course, the advantage of PVC is that it’s completely weatherproof; maintenance-free, and won’t rot, corrode or splinter!

What are the best headphones for running?

Research has shown what most of us instinctively knew - that listening to the right type and tempo of music while you run keeps you ‘in the zone’ for longer.

So what factors are important when choosing headphones for running?

Water resistance – If you run outside this is obviously important, but many of us forget that sweat is water and if you’re running, indoors or out you will sweat, and eventually this will kill your headphones.

Fit – There are headphones which wrap tightly around your head, or over and around your ears. But the best types of running headphones are probably true wireless, or lightweight Bluetooth. They are ‘in-ear’ designs with tips that fit into the ear and additional, curved, tapered 'hooks' that sit under the crater of cartilage just above the earhole, known as the anti-helix. When you’re running little things like a cable rubbing the back of your neck can feel irritating. Also, although the battery life can be irritatingly short with true wireless headphones if you use them as your main set, it’s more than long enough for even the most enthusiastic runner.

Sound quality – This is possibly the least important feature for sports use.

Mostly runners want to feel the beat and be motivated by their pumped-up playlist, while blocking out external noise. Sports headphones are not about being able to pick out the subtle nuances in a Chopin piano concerto.

Local Emergency Planning People in the community of any age are invited to come and learn about local Emergency Planning and Response.

Challenging Table top exercises using different realistic scenarios will be held and facilitated by experienced Emergency Planners at Felpham Community Hall on Thursday August 1st and Thursday October 31st all starting at 6.30p.m. All are welcome. It is a serious subject but fun to participate in the notional teams that are created at each of the exercises.

We are also able to deliver a twenty minute presentation about local emergency planning to groups from all age ranges at your own meeting events at a date and time convenient to you.
