The Hancock household is eagerly awaiting the release of Avengers: Endgame in less than two months (current release date April 26th). It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say my entire family are hooked on the whole superhero genre.

And we're not alone. All over the country there are regular debates about whether Superman would beat Thor in a fight, or why Iron Man is two words while Batman is only one.

Our kids dress up like them and carry packed lunches in plastic boxes emblazoned with their images (actually some adults do this too.) But why?

According to recent research from Kyoto University in Japan, our love of superheroes starts before we can talk. In a series of experiments, infants as young as six months were shown short animations in which one figure chased and bumped into a second. Meanwhile, a third figure watched from afar. In version A, the third figure steps in and prevents the collision, while in version B it runs away without intervening.

After watching the clips, the infants were presented with replicas of both the intervening and the non-intervening third figures. They consistently preferred the one who saved the day. These results suggest that babies are capable of understanding and recognising heroism.

As we grow up superhero stories seem to resonate with us. We identify with the themes, with the dilemmas and problems that superheroes face, and we aspire to their noble impulses and heroic acts. We identify with them because often they are created in our image, albeit a larger than life version of that image.

It helps that most superheroes are flawed.

They are not bloodless examples of 'goodness and virtue' but real individuals who are prey to their emotions and environment yet who strive to overcome their foibles and triumph anyway.

Some characters like Batman and Iron Man have overcome trauma to become superheroes. In psychology this is called post-traumatic growth and it gives us hope that we too can overcome difficulties in our lives and become stronger people.

There is something both empowering and uplifting about watching your favourite superhero emerge victorious at the end of a story, which is why I will be queuing at the cinema on April 26th with Mrs. Hancock and all the little Hancocks. See you there.

stations, YouTube channels, news websites, and blogs in the language you want to learn. Advertise for someone to practice conversation with. Ask friends on Facebook or in the school playground whether they know a native speaker who would converse with you for half an hour in exchange for coffee and cake! There are groups dedicated to language exchange on Facebook too. By forcing yourself to converse you will improve very quickly.

Want to learn a new language in 2019? It’s not as hard as you think! I learned Spanish alongside my son to encourage him while he was studying for his GCSE. It started as a joke, but I quickly became hooked. Here’s what I learned about language learning.

New words? - You may not need to learn as many as you think! In English just 300 words make up 65% of all written material!

We use some words a lot, and luckily that’s the case in every other language too.

You can buy or make decks of flash cards of these words. There is even a flash card app called Anki which presents words at precisely the right intervals to maximise memorisation.

Cognates - These are words which are spelled almost the same in English and which have the same meaning. In French, lots of 'ion' words are spelled the same even though they are pronounced differently: action, nation, communication etc. In Spanish the same words end in 'ción' and in Italian 'zione'. Simple right?

There are also words such as hélicoptère (French) or aeropuerto (Spanish) which are similar enough to the English word that you will recognise them immediately. You can google 'Cognates' for the language you are learning.

Interaction - You need to hear and speak the language consistently. Look up Radio

Free Resources – I have passable Spanish thanks to the Duo Lingo app. The BBC has introductory courses to around 40 different languages. Omniglot.com is a great open-source resource to all manner of languages, and I found fluentu.com brilliant for Spanish.

Embrace mistakes – We learn by making mistakes. As children we speak, we’re corrected, and we adapt. Even at aged fifty I still come across new English words and phrases. You can’t ever completely learn a language. Just use everything you know with the emphasis on communication rather than perfection. Native speakers will not be offended by your slips...they will most likely be charmed and fall over themselves to help correct you.

Use SMART goals - SMART means Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timed. A good example is, ‘By the end of January I will be able to hold a simple conversation with a waiter, book a table, order food, and ask for the bill. Or you might aim to complete three lessons per day on Duo Lingo for the whole of a month.

You might even set yourself the task of passing an online test, a GCSE. The point is, you have a time frame, and the achievements you make are measurable, so you can see how far you've come.

Spoil your Valentine with this decadent brunch

Preparation time: 15 mins Cooking time: 20 mins Serves: 4 (or 2 really hungry people!)

Ingredients 4 eggs 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 2 English muffins or two bagels, halved Butter for spreading 8 slices smoked salmon Chopped chives, to serve For the hollandaise sauce 2 tsp lemon juice 2 tsp white wine vinegar 3 egg yolks 125g unsalted butter, cubed Method Hollandaise Sauce: Pour the lemon juice and vinegar into a small bowl, add the egg yolks and whisk with a balloon whisk until

light and frothy. Place the bowl over a pan of simmering water and continue to whisk until the mixture thickens. Add the butter a small amount at a time, whisking constantly until the sauce is thick. If it looks like it might be splitting, remove from the heat and continue to whisk. Season with salt and pepper then and keep warm.

Poached eggs: bring a large pan of water to the boil and add the vinegar. Lower the heat so that the water simmers very gently. Stir the water a little so you create a gentle whirlpool effect, then slide in the eggs one by one. Cook each for about 4 mins, then remove with a slotted spoon.

Handy hint - you will see the eggs begin to rise in the water as they reach completion.

Lightly toast and butter the muffins or bagels, then place a couple of slices of the smoked salmon on each half. Top each with an egg, then spoon over your Hollandaise and garnish with chopped chives.

I decided to save money and eat more healthily in 2019 so I knew I would have to start packing my own lunches. It's taken until now really get on board with this idea. Here are the problems I came up against and how I solved them.

Problem 1: It takes too much time to pack a lunch.

It was such a faff...or was it?

Solution: I timed how long it took to walk to the deli or drive to the garage, wait in the queue to be served and get back to work. Then I timed how long it took me to prepare a lunch the night before. Turns out making your own lunch is way faster! Who knew?

Problem 2: I'm hungry again by midafternoon.

The solution: Pack more food! DUH! I make sure I had a sugar-free protein bar, a banana, or a bag of nuts in reserve in case I had a mid-afternoon

dip. That way I don’t head for the bakery or start mainlining chocolates from the ever-present boxes around our office.

Problem 3: Formulaic lunches.

When I was at primary school my mum packed me a ham sandwich, an apple, some carrot sticks and a wagon wheel, pretty much every day. When I started making my own lunches, I used the same formula (minus the wagon wheel).

Solution: What did I enjoy eating? I like leftover casseroles and risottos, so I made extra. I like open sandwiches, Danish style, on Rye bread so I bought the ingredients, and I arranged lunch swaps with a friend, so she caters Thursday and I do Friday.

A little creative thinking keeps things interesting and I haven't missed nipping to the deli. In fact, we walk round the park instead so we're getting some

I don’t have a great track record with Valentine’s Day. The first year with my girlfriend we’d only been dating for two months, so I went low key, with a card and a single long-stemmed red rose…and sadly this remains my sole Valentine’s success story to date.

Fast forward to year two and I pushed the boat out by cooking a romantic meal. I’m not bad in the kitchen, so prepared a full three courses. For starters I made a wild mushroom soup. My girlfriend declared it delicious, then collapsed a little way into the main course, having had a massive allergic response to one of the species of mushrooms! Being blue-lighted to hospital is not the most romantic end to a Valentine date.

But Clare is made of strong stuff, and when she recovered, we resumed dating.

The following Valentine’s Day I decided I’d surprise her with a weekend trip to London. I booked the full works: meal, show, hotel, and train tickets well in advance, and made sure her diary was clear. On the way to the train station I tripped up a kerb and banged my elbow as I fell. It smarted a bit but wasn’t a big deal.

On the train however, I realised I could no longer bend my arm, which was starting to throb. By the time we arrived in London my fingers had developed a weird purple hue, so our first stop was Accident and Emergency, where I discovered I’d broken my elbow! It took so long to get assessed, Xrayed and patched up that we missed our meal and the show. We did stay in the hotel, but I don’t remember much as I was high on pain-relief!

We’d moved in together and I knew she wanted a kitten. I sourced the cutest little ball of grey fluff with amber eyes. I took Valentine’s Day off work and duly collected the kitten that morning, all brighteyed and bushy tailed. I took it home anticipating Clare’s delight. But by 3pm the kitten was looking a bit peaky. By 5:30pm Clare walked through the door to find me nursing a very sick scrap of fur, on the phone to the emergency vet. When we arrived at the surgery, she told us gently that he had a sky-high temperature, probably due to a virus, and to expect the worst. We left him being fitted with a drip, then waited at home fretting until the next morning. As soon as we could we rang the surgery and discovered to our delight that he’d turned a corner made it through the night. Valentine (or Val as we call him) is now a robust one-year-old cat with the constitution of an ox, who totally rules our home, so at least that story had a happy ending.

This year for Valentine’s Day I’m cutting my losses and going with a card and a box of Maltesers. The question is do I risk popping the engagement ring at the bottom, or is that just asking for trouble?

Local History

We always view the area in which we live, as a town, village or extension of another place.

Middleton on Sea fits very well into this situation. Is it an extension of Bognor Regis, or Felpham?

No, it is actually a village, but over a period of time it is being encompassed by modern building. I recently came across a copy of the Village design statement, which was produced in December 2000, yes nearly 19 years ago.

This plan looked at such things as street furniture, trees and hedges. Why? you may ask, but each of these elements is important to identify an area. The area of course has a number of private estates, with their own roads, many of which are not actually shown on Google earth because they are private, they also have their own restrictions to retain their character.

Many people believe all of the area is modern, but of course this is not true. There are mentions of the area in the Doomsday book in 1086. The Manor house was built c1800 and St. Nicholas church was built in 1849.

A more modern area was commenced after the 1st World War when Captain H. Rowlands S. Coldicott MC. arrived and purchased quantities of land and built ‘country houses and cottages,’ His preference was for ‘pretty cottages, with handmade tiles for the roofs or thatch and cream washed walls.’ Many of his estate still remain today. It would be interesting to walk around and try to ascertain the age of many of the individual buildings in the area.

Even in a digital age diaries are surprisingly popular Christmas gifts. Perhaps you found yourself sitting pen-poised on January 1st.

On January 1st, 1660 Samuel Pepys was in the same position.

That was the day he began his diary. He could have had no idea what an important document it would become. It is one of the most important documents for historians studying the English Restoration period, which coincidentally also began in 1660.

Pepys’ diaries are special because for just under a decade he recorded the minutiae of his everyday life. It helped that he was quite well-connected. His cousin, Edward Montagu, was a high-ranking naval officer who found a position for Pepys at the Navy Office in the City of London. His hard work and talent saw Pepys promoted through the ranks very quickly. His cousin's position also meant that Pepys was present at many

important events, all of which he recorded in his meticulous shorthand.

For example, Pepys was aboard one of the ships which sailed to Holland to bring Charles II back to England. He attended King Charles II's coronation, and he was also President of the Royal Society for a while.

Pepys recorded everything. He gave vivid accounts of the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London. It is from him that we are able to relive the theatre of the period, as well as fashion and popular food and drink.

His diary has been of invaluable assistance to historians and has given much pleasure to its many readers.

We are in turbulent times right now, and entering an extraordinary year for our country. Who knows‌the historians of the future might be reading your entries on the aftermath of Brexit!

This month - My Gardening Valentine In the run-up to Valentine’s Day someone always asks me what they should buy for the gardener in their life.

It’s a tricky question to answer. Many people think we must like cut flowers, but actually I’m not keen and most gardeners I know aren’t either. We have gardens full of the things after all, and we tend to prefer our plants living and breathing in their natural environment, rather than imported from abroad and wrapped in cellophane.

Unless you know a bit about gardening, and the tastes of your own particular gardener you’re probably best-off avoiding plants too. The non-green-fingered venture into dangerous territory when they try to buy plants because there are so many variables. Will it suit the soil? Is it too invasive? Will it poison the gardener’s dog…or children…eek?

It’s a thorny issue (pardon the pun) so here is my go-to gift list guaranteed to make you the Valentine hero of your gardening amour.

Don’t buy a sweatshirt which declares ‘head-gardener. They are naff, and most gardeners prefer old, comfy clothes which do the job better. However, if you present your gardener with a tough tunic or gardening apron, which is thorn-proof, and which has lots of deep pockets to house secateurs and trowels, they will love you forever.

Then there are wellies. Who knew wellies could be romantic? But gardening folk drool over wellies the way Supermodels drool over Jimmy Choos. And there’s so much wellie-choice now. We all prefer something with a thick sole but there are bright and colourful wellies and traditional ones. For the ultimate in warmth and

breathability I can recommend a proper Gore-Tex pair...sheer luxury. Mine remain the favourite Valentine gift my husband ever bought me.

He knows how to romance a woman!

A proper long-necked watering can, with a brass rose will also earn you Valentine brownie points.

Bigger isn’t necessarily better though unless your Valentine boasts big biceps!

Watering cans are heavy when full. I find 3-4 litres is about the right size.

A bunch of long-stemmed red roses will set you back at least £40 and they might last a few days. For a similar price you can buy the gardener in your life Felco secateurs (with Valentine red handles) and they’ll last forever. I know which I’d prefer.

Garden trugs are so practical. Most gardeners I know would be delighted to receive one. The trug is a great gift but even better when filled with a few gardening goodies such as packets of seed, water retaining granules, plant food etc. You could add some hand tools too, such as a trowel and a fork. Make sure they are stainless steel and have long handles for ease of use.

An insulated mug or a good flask will always warm the heart of your Valentine because hot drinks don’t remain hot for long outside, even on a warm day.

Finally, don’t forget gardening vouchers.

Often us gardeners spot the perfect plant or gardening accessory when we’re strapped for cash, so vouchers are a perfect gift to save for a rainy day...and gardeners love rainy days, Valentine’s or not.

Shopaholic and Baby by Sophie Kinsella Justified or not, chick lit gets a bad rap, but not everyone enjoys serious tomes, and if you’re looking for something frothy and fun to throw yourself into, then you can’t go to far wrong when it comes to Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic series.

Shopaholic and Baby is the fifth book in the series, and once again features everyone’s favourite shopaholic, Becky.

Previous books have seen Becky try to take control of her spending habits by following the advice she frequently gives out as a journalist writing about managing personal finances; have the time of her life living in New York and shopping on Fifth Avenue; and marry her dream boyfriend Luke, whilst loving the excuse to spend more money.

Now Becky has something else to spend her money on. Her baby. From designer nurseries to the coolest pram, there seems to be no limit to what she can shop for. That list includes a celebrity obstetrician, Venetia Carter. On meeting her Becky is shocked to discover that Venetia used to date Luke in college. Will Venetia want to get back together with him? Is Becky’s dream marriage under threat?

Most women will be able to relate to the insecurities Becky encounters in this novel as her pregnancy progresses and her body changes. In Becky, Kinsella has created a character who is caring, charming, but at the same time, full of flaws. And that is why readers seem to love her so much.

The Secret Seven: The Humbug Adventure by Enid Blyton If you are like me then you probably grew up on a diet of Enid Blyton and a distant world of adventure and fun, where children had far more freedom than we give our offspring these days. This nostalgia probably accounts for the enduring appeal of her books.

This Secret Seven adventure features all of the familiar gang, including Scamper the dog, but it is not a story that you may be familiar with. It is a short story, originally published in 1954 in one of Enid Blyton’s annuals. This version, published in 2016, is the first time it has been published in its own right.

The gang have been invited to the house of an old professor to look at Jupiter through his telescope. They aren’t particularly looking forward to it and find it boring until they move the telescope around and see someone setting fire to a haystack at Wingfield Farm. Chichester Roman Walls Walk A 5.5 km (3.4 mile) circular walk along the Roman Walls that surround Chichester.

Starting at the canal basin the walk heads to South Street where the official walls walk can be picked up, brass plagues inlaid into the pavement will indicate the way and many information boards on the walk explain more about the history.

City gates would once have stood at the four entrances of North, South, East and West Streets, but unfortunately no trace of these gates remain. Continue on South Street to the Old Theatre (now Zizzi’s) which was built in 1791 for the population of Chichester, turn into Theatre Lane and walk to the car park opposite where the first glimpse of the Roman Walls can be seen. Now a scheduled monument, more than 80% of the original structure has withstood the test of time and the majority of the walls are accessible to the public.

The South East Quadrant walls are found in a small park behind iron fencing and has a great example of one of only four remaining bastions. Standing at half its original height it was used as defences for the city, these bastions would have housed large crossbows capable of firing bolts up to 500m.

Exit park and continue through the car park into St John’s Street where St Johns Church chapel can be found, a rare example of a Georgian Proprietary Chapel, built in 1813 the chapel would have provided additional capacity for the existing parish churches meeting the spiritual needs of the growing urban population.

Cross East Street and look for the silver wishbone hanging below the clock above the old entrance to the Shippam’s paste factory. Shippam’s have been in the city since 1750 when Sergeant Shipston Shippam opened a small warehouse in West Street selling butter, cheese and meat from the west country. Shippam’s also provided provisions for the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic wars. The meat paste factory in Eastgate opened in 1892 and prided itself on sourcing ingredients from all over the world to make into its famous pastes, production continued until 2002 when the factory was taken over by Princes and moved to Terminus Road. The smell of chicken stock was often smelt across the city and the silver wishbone above the door symbolises the great pile of wishbones left from the many carcasses that came in every day, they would have been given to visitors of the factory to take away as good luck tokens.

From the factory head north and stroll along the wide promenade created on the wall to Priory Park.

Enter the Park and continue round the elevated walkway on the walls, that give a grand view over the park. Priory park has two additional scheduled monuments; the Guildhall that opened in 1292 as a Franciscan Friary and used by the Greyfriars that were resident in the park for over two centuries. The second monument is the Norman Motte where once stood Chichester Castle, built by local Lord Roger de Montgomerie. Also look out for the remains of the hospitum walls of the friary and the aviary that houses many budgerigars.

The North East Quadrant of the walls finish as they lead into Priory Lane and the North West quadrant starts after crossing North Street. Another elevated section that continues around the city outskirts overlooking the houses of Orchard Street and giving some great views in places towards the cathedral.

After crossing West Street, the South West Quadrant is the last section of wall and this part has no promenade on the wall so is followed by a path alongside, take time to visit a hidden gem that is Bishops Palace Gardens, the peaceful gardens are situated just through a gap in the wall and next to the cathedral. Return to the walk which leaves the wall just past the gardens and follows the course of the River Lavant back to South Street, a short back track down Southgate will lead back to the start at the canal basin.

But if it’s your home or your street, it can leave you feeling intimated, angry and frightened. It can ruin lives and make whole areas feel unsafe.

Anti-social behaviour includes: Threatening or ‘yobbish’ behaviour. Gangs ‘hanging around’. Abusive, rowdy or noisy neighbours. People buying or selling drugs. Drinking in the street, aggressive begging. Night time noise from houses or gardens. Setting off fireworks late at night. Graffiti and fly-posting. Vandalism. Cars abandoned on the street. Litter and fly-tipping. Any other behaviour that disturbs or scares you.

Some of these may be one-off events; others may happen repeatedly, so the effects add up over time. There are many ways that Sussex residents can support their communities and help reduce anti-social behaviour: Join your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme or a tenants’ or residents’ associations. Discuss any issues with your local councillor, who can act on our behalf to raise concerns with the council and other organisations. If the anti-social behaviour is noise related then please contact your local Environmental Health Department. If your neighbours are private tenants then report the nuisance problem to the letting.

They may be able to help you as often the tenancy agreement states that they must not cause a nuisance to neighbours. If your neighbours are council or housing associate tenants then report the nuisance problem to the council or relevant organisation as they may be able to help.

By playing an active role in your community you really can help make a difference. Often the councils and housing associations will only become involved after a few reports, so don't wait, report it.

How are your New Year resolutions going? Most resolutions fail because they are too vague. Make your 2019 resolutions SMART. Specific - Rather than, 'I will lose weight,’ say, 'I will lose 7lbs by the end of February by cutting out deserts, and walking a mile a day.'

Measurable - What does your success look like? Is it a 15lb weight-loss by the end of March? Is it fitting into a size 12 dresss? An effective goal is easy to visualise.

Attainable - By all means be ambitious; aiming to save £2500 during 2019 for your dream holiday in 2020 is fine, but make sure you can break down the goal into attainable steps which can be achieved in a shorter time frame. Can you save £200 per month from your current income? If not can you pick up some bar work or sell some possessions on eBay. Maybe you could save £100 per month over two years and

take your dream holiday in 2021.

Now your target is attainable.

Realistic - If your goal is to win X Factor but you couldn’t hold a tune in a bucket it's time for a reality check. If you are 100lbs over your ideal weight, you are never going to be a size ten for your beach holiday in July. But realistic doesn't just mean 'able to atttain', it means 'willing to attain.' If you want to retrain as a nurse, will you put in the hours of study and take a pay cut while you're doing that?

Time-limited - Set a goal. Research shows that three months is good as it's short enough to see the end-point, and long enough for significant change. Whether it’s passing your driving test, or shedding a stone or two before your wedding day; three months is a good time-frame.

Activity trackers have become very popular in recent years. Fitbits are the device that everyone has heard of but there are many others. If you're thinking of buying one, ask yourself these questions: Do you regularly?

Lots of people buy a Fitbit or its equivalent because they think it will help them to exercise consistently. But these devices are not magic bullets. If you make any and every excuse NOT to exercise then a Fitbit won’t change that, you will simply make excuses to avoid exercise while wearing a gadget!

Would you wear it, and use it?

For a fitness tracker to give you actionable data you need to wear it almost all of the time, even while asleep. Some people can't wear watches or jewellery while they are at work, others hate the feeling of anything on their wrist, and others have sensitive skin which is irritated by straps. If you don’t wear it then it can't do its job, so it’s not worth buying one.

Will you use the app?

You'll need to download the app to your phone and use it if you want to make use of the data your activity tracker collects.

Interacting with your device and the app is key to success, so if you can't commit, don't buy.

Are you a data nerd?

Some of us love to monitor our sleep, our heart rates, the number of steps we do each day. We find ourselves endlessly fascinating. The basics of losing weight and becoming healthier are simple, but the specifics for our own body can vary wildly.

If you don’t care about specifics and are happy with just eating a bit less and exercising a bit more, an activity tracker might be a waste of money for you. If you have a medical condition or are in training for an event, or just enjoy looking at data, then having organized and detailed information at your fingertips is a great resource.

Would my phone do the job instead?

There are hundreds of fitness, pedometer and cycling apps on both Android and iOS. If you're unsure about whether an activity tracker is the right purchase for you try using one or two of these apps for a month. You might find they give you all the data you need. Also, if you find you can't be bothered to use the apps, then you are very unlikely to benefit from buying an activity tracker.

Are you competitive?

Some activity trackers (particularly Fitbits) are social. You can add friends, compare step counts and earn milestone badges.

You can also create groups and engage in competitions and challenges.

While these are good features, they aren’t for everyone. You might not need such a high-spec activity tracker if you don't want to engage in the social side of things.

Activity trackers are useful devices and many people enjoy them and benefit from using them, but they won't turn a reluctant exerciser into a highly motivated one, and if you aren't actually interested in all the data, they might not justify their price tag.

RSPB Pagham Harbour & Medmerry Show your love of the natural world this February It’s February and the curlews beautiful evocative call drifts across the harbour. It is an eerie, lonely call, but at this time of year may well attract the attentions of another curlew. Although they can be heard throughout the year, it is now that they start to call more frequently in preparation for the breeding season. Instantly recognisable by their long down-curved bill, these large long-legged waders will breed in uplands and moors. Despite being a common sight across our reserves of Pagham Harbour & Medmerry, the curlew is one of our most rapidly declining breeding bird species, with our changing climates effects on their breeding habitat being cited as one of the main causes.

Equally haunting is the night-time call of the tawny owl. The well-known ‘twit-twoo’ is actually two birds calling to one another. The male starts to proclaim his territory and court females in with a more accurate ’hooo-hoo-hooo’, while the female provides the ‘kee-wick’ part of the duet. Like the curlew, their calls can be heard more regularly at this time of year.

Many of our resident birds will start to look for partners and pair up now, giving them a head start over migrating species. As avian minds turn to romance, so do ours with Valentine’s Day. However, it is not just love for a partner that we may think about…

Many people will be posting images on social media as part of the #showthelove campaign.

This national campaign led by the Climate Coalition with over 130 members, including the RSPB, is dedicated to climate action. However, anyone can get involved. You could simply wear a green two-tone heart that is the campaigns logo. If you want to be more active, you can post photos online of your favourite natural places or species that have been or may be threatened by climate change. Alternatively, you could let us know about changes in nature you have noticed, such as snowdrops flowering earlier or butterflies emerging from hibernation earlier. We have records from our Pagham Harbour reserve showing quite clearly a pattern of earlier natural sightings and our Medmerry reserve itself is a direct result of the need to take action in light of increasing winter storms and the consistent threat of flooding. There are many arguments and theories around global warming and its causes but there is no denying our climate is changing. #showthelove runs from 7 – 14 February.

FELPHAM PARISH COUNCIL

The Community Hall As reported previously reported, all legal steps of ownership have now been completed. It is now time to action the improvement plans that were drawn up last year.

Solar Panels will soon be fitted to the roof, sound proofing work within the halls has already begun, a digital projector will be installed, and a public access defibrillator will be mounted on the outside wall. Improved signage is also planned to guide new users to the building.

A wide range of busy daily activities are already well established at the hall. We welcome all enquiries for hall hire for one off or regular events.

Review of The Felpham Neighborhood Plan and Design Guide The outcome of the review of the plan and guide undertaken last year has been approved and adopted by the council and will shortly be available for public consultation.

As before the plan emphasizes the need to protect local open spaces and to conserve the quality, tradition and character of Felpham. It will also guide the council’s new style Planning, Licensing and Neighborhood Planning Committee in its role as a statutory consultee for planning applications submitted for approval to Arun District Council.

Recycling Bins We are currently liaising with Arun District Council to increase the number of Recycling bins in Felpham in order to offer easier disposal of rubbish in public places Felpham Emergency Resilience Group Residents are invited to participate in this rewarding and exciting activity which will help to mitigate the impact of any unplanned emergencies.

Table top exercises will be held and facilitated by experienced Emergency Planners at Felpham Community Hall on Thursday February 21st, Thursday May 30th, Thursday August 1st and Thursday October 13th all starting at 6.30p.m.
