I used to be very cynical about yoga. I thought it was a trendy ‘exercise’ class for those who had time on their hands and oodles of Sweaty Betty gear. I basically dismissed it out of hand.

I could not have been more wrong. Yoga is awesome. Whatever age, however fit, woman or man there is a yoga class for you. The benefits are extraordinary. It will impact your life every single day and future-proof your body as you get older.

I am so much more flexible. I have fewer aches and pains. I can now use breathing exercises to calm me down or help me get to sleep. My arms have tone and I feel far less scrunched after being at my desk all day or digging the garden! Plus, I am much better equipped to deal with “overwhelm” – when the to-do list hits 50 and you just don’t know how you will fit it all in?

That’s all from a one-hour, weekly yoga class with my incredible, local teacher, Sarah Dakin. It’s important to choose the right teacher for you. Sarah is a breath of fresh air, who every Friday realigns my body and my brain. She explains everything brilliantly and doesn’t mind repeating (!), she considers the person you are, and the yoga exercises you need. My swimming and cycling husband said yoga wasn’t for him – he’s a convert.

DO YOU LOVE A GOOD PRANK?

History is littered with wars, revolutions, and the rise and fall of civilizations. Yet, amidst the chaos and drama, a less chronicled but equally important thread weaves through the fabric of our past: the history of practical jokes. This noble tradition has been the unsung hero of human interaction, providing levity in the face of adversity and reminding rulers and peasants alike that nobody is above a good pie in the face.

Let’s rewind to Ancient Rome, where one of the earliest recorded practical jokes came to light. Emperor Augustus, known for his powerful leadership, apparently also had a knack for humour. He was fond of sending guests to his banquets home with absurd gifts, such as a giant squid disguised as a delicacy, or a bunch of carrots artistically arranged to look like a rare bouquet. Imagine the confusion and laughter when a dignified senator discovered his ‘precious’ parting gift was essentially a well-dressed octopus.

Fast forward to the Renaissance, an era of enlightenment and, evidently, elite pranking. Leonardo da Vinci, aside from his contributions to art and science, reportedly designed a mechanical dragon to scare unwary visitors in his court. This early animatronic beast wasn’t just a feat of engineering but a testament to da Vinci’s love for a good prank, blending innovation with a dash of terror.

The 18th century brought us the infamous Joseph Pujol, better known by his stage name Le Pétomane. This French entertainer turned flatulence into an art form, astonishing audiences by playing musical instruments and performing various feats through the power of his own gas. Pujol’s performances at the Moulin Rouge were nothing short of a sensational prank on high society, making him a legend in the annals (half pun totally intended) of practical joke history.

In the more recent past, the 20th century gave us Alan Abel, a professional prankster who founded the Society for Indecency to Naked Animals (SINA), advocating for the clothing of all animals for the sake of decency. This long-running hoax fooled many, including some media outlets, into believing there was a genuine movement to put pants on horses and dresses on chickens!

Even esteemed institutions haven’t been immune to the allure of pranking. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has a storied tradition of elaborate “hacks,” as they call them. One of the most memorable involved placing a police car on top of the Institute’s Great Dome, complete with a dummy officer and a box of donuts inside. This feat of engineering and humour required meticulous planning and execution, embodying the spirit of creativity and mischief that defines the best practical jokes.

These historical hijinks remind us that, despite our differences, humour is a universal language. From the halls of ancient empires to the ivory towers of academia, the tradition of practical joking has endured, bringing joy, surprise, and sometimes befuddlement to the unsuspecting.

As we approach April 1st this year, let’s remember the lessons taught by history’s greatest pranksters: to approach life with a sense of humour, a dash of creativity, and, when necessary, a well-timed whoopee cushion.

EASTER EGGS ARE GOOD FOR YOU ...

Chocolate Easter eggs. Surely one of the finest German inventions ever. No-one can be quite sure who first came up with the idea of combining chocolate and eggs but whoever did was a marketing genius. In these health-conscious times though can we still justify this tradition, or should we ban such an indulgent confectionary?

I once read an article, in the Guardian I think, that claimed you can find evidence to support any argument you like if you look hard enough. So, on behalf of chocoholics everywhere I decided to take up the challenge and here are my results.

CHOCOLATE IS GOOD FOR YOUR BRAIN

• Cocoa-rich drinks are rich in chemicals called flavanols. These enhance brain function, fight sleep deprivation, fatigue, and aging!

• They are the same chemicals present in Green Tea, which is touted as a preventative for stroke, heart failure, cancer, and diabetes. Gwyneth Paltrow drinks gallons of it and she looks fab. Sadly, I couldn’t find any mention of her imbibing Thornton’s continental choccies, but I’ll keep looking. Chocolate helps prevent cancer.

• Ok, we’ve met flavanols ... now meet flavonoids. These are antioxidants: you know, those things beloved of cosmetics companies, ‘We slapped this on our model, and she looked twenty years younger after we’d photographed her in soft-focus and air-brushed her so even her own mother wouldn’t recognise her.’

• We do know that they help prevent cancer. We also know they don’t do this directly. In fact, our bodies view flavonoids as highly undesirable and work hard to get rid of them. Byproducts of this effort are phase II enzymes, which help eliminate mutagens and carcinogens, which sound like the aliens from an episode of Captain Scarlett and are equally nasty. Only small amounts of flavonoids are required for this beneficial effect but hey ... have another egg just to make sure.

CHOCOLATE IS A MOOD-BOOSTER

• It contains small amounts of phenylethylamine, anandamide, tryptophan and caffeine. These are natural mood boosters, so this explains why women crave the stuff when they’re premenstrual, pregnant, at work, awake …

• I guess chocolate is both naughty and nice and annoyingly, as with anything life, moderation is the key.

• Dark chocolate is definitely better for you overall. Sixty per cent cocoa solids is great but 70 or 75 per cent is better. Milk chocolate contains fewer cocoa solids and has a higher sugar and fat content, and I couldn’t find any research saying either of these have hidden health benefits ... and believe me I looked really hard.

So, enjoy your eggs this Easter. Chocolate is delicious, fun and a perfect pick-me-up. Just don’t overdo it.

MERLIN’S WOOD AND LAVINGTON COMMON WALK BY SIMON BAKER IRONS

An intriguing walk I discovered recently is the mystical Merlin’s Wood on the edge of Lavington Common near Graffham. A rare example of a lowland heath, Lavington Common is part of the open landscape that once stretched across the Weald of Sussex and Kent. Contrary to popular belief, heathland is not natural and was created by the actions of humans thousands of years ago by clearing the trees and working the land which ultimately caused nutrient levels to fall, this created perfect habitats for heathland plants such as heather to grow. 80% of the lowland heath has been lost since the 1800’s, mainly through neglect and tree planting.

Lavington common is owned by the National Trust and free parking is available in their car park. (GU28 0QL)

1. The 1km woodland trail through Merlin’s Wood starts at the car park. I found it useful to take a quick photo of the map on the information board as the route had very little signage.

2. Leave the car park by the woodland walk sign and head onto the heath. At the edge of the woodland, where the heath opens up is a small track through the heathers to the right, this will lead you to Merlin’s Wood.

3. A bridge crosses a small stream, which was in full flow on my visit, probably due to the huge amount of recent rain, however in the summer I would imagine that the stream will be much smaller.

4. Cross the bridge and enter the mysterious forest of Merlin’s Wood. You’ll know you are in the right place as the twisted trunks of the Rhododendron trees filter out a lot of the light and make it an eerily dark trail. Due to the reduced sunlight and damp atmosphere, mosses are abundant, growing all over the branches and trunks of the trees giving them a velvety coat. In May/June the wood will be in full bloom, bringing some colour to this otherwise dark wood.

5. The path through the woods is fairly clear as it winds its way in and out of the intermingled branches, twisted trunks and gnarly trees. The sound of the bubbling stream nearby indicates that you are on the right route.

6. Children will love exploring the many winding grottos and at places you may have to climb over branches that have naturally grown across the path, which adds to the adventure of this trail

7. At the end of the woods is another bridge that leads back on to the open heath. A short walk through the remaining pines and across the middle of the common will take you back to the car park.

8. There are also plenty of smaller paths to explore on the common that are formed between the heathers. Please keep to the paths as the heathers provide shelter and breeding grounds for reptiles such as adders and sand lizards along with birds and many insects too.

LOCAL HISTORY

Today we regularly see people cold water swimming in the sea, because it is seemingly good for you. Not for me I am afraid.

However, over 120 years ago, swimming was also seen to be good for you but with a quite unfamiliar perspective. Ladies could swim off the beach, however men and boys over ten years of age would have to be in a different area.

Swimming was from a bathing machine, known as a contraption on wheels, pulled out to sea by a horse. Swimmers could hire a bathing costume and a towel from our very own famous bathing lady, Mary Wheatland, before entering the machine to undress. Once they had finished their swim, they would re-enter the machine and dress whilst the machine was dragged back up the beach. On exiting they would return their costume and towel, to allow Mary to wash and lay out to dry, ready for the next swimmer. Very different from what we do today!

Mary continued to operate these machines on the beach until 1909, when she decided to retire at the age of 74. During this time, she was attributed to having saved over 30 lives and her boast was that she ‘never lost a life.’ She had strong views on modern dress. She once remarked that in her day: “Ladies wore respectable costumes, and I always wore a blue serge dress down to my feet, but today I don’t know what things are coming to!” Her view in the 1900 era, I wonder how she would review today’s swimmers!

HELP YOUR POND BREATHE

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, my name is Barry and I run Glorious Ponds Ltd, based in Bognor Regis. It was my passion for angling and the environment that led me to studying for a degree in aquaculture and fisheries management. As with looking after your garden, timing is everything and it’s the same with ponds, summer is just around the corner and it is this time of year that is most crucial for ponds.

Ponds require oxygen to help fish and other aquatic animals thrive, however during the warmer months when the water temperature increases the water doesn’t hold as much oxygen as colder water does. Here are my top tips to help oxygenate your ponds:

• Clear excess aquatic weed from the surface of the pond, the surface is thinner when there is movement on the surface and therefore oxygen exchange is more efficient. Although there are oxygenating plants for ponds, you must understand that during the evenings these plants will not be producing oxygen as this only occurs during daylight because of photosynthesis. The fish will still be consuming oxygen but it’s not being replenished by the plants.

• Adding an air pump to your pond is a quick method to introduce oxygen, plus you can control it by running it during the evenings when oxygen levels are at their lowest.

• And finally, if you have the time, build and create a waterfall, there is nothing more pleasant than the sound of running water that also adds oxygen to your pond.

EASTER EGGS AND WOODLOUSE RACING

Springtime and Eastertide have long been celebrated with ancient customs and folklore, some lost and forgotten, some still perpetuated year after year. Easter eggs signify new life and new beginnings, hot-cross buns the Good Friday story of the crucifixion. These buns were frequently kept from one year to the next: cold-cross buns were hung up in cottages to ward off evil. Some Sussex fishermen even carried them for protection against drowning. Good Friday skipping was another custom from days gone by. In Brighton, the fishermen didn’t go out to sea on Good Friday out of respect for the holy day. Instead they organised skipping, using their long and thick fishing ropes, when this special religious festival was called ‘Long Rope Day’.

Another popular activity was marble playing during Lent, culminating on Good Friday. As one 19th-century Sussex vicar wrote: ‘In the country districts in Sussex the marble season is strictly defined between Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and on the last day of the season it seems to be the object of every man and boy to play marbles as much as possible’. Such has been the importance of marble playing in Sussex that even today the British and World Marbles Championship takes place every Good Friday at the Greyhound Inn at Tinsley Green, near Crawley. A knock-out tournament, teams of six players compete to win the title and a silver trophy. Over the years, players from all over the world have participated alongside English teams, playing under the strict rules of the British Marbles Board of Control. It’s a very serious game.

Curiously, again in Sussex, there’s been a variant Good Friday game played not with glass marbles, but with – perhaps unbelievably – woodlice – literally a live sport! These miniature crustaceans with their armour-like bodies instinctively curl up into a neat ball when touched or disturbed, their defence against danger. Thus a fleshy, live ‘marble’ is created when they are handled. At Rusper, just north of Horsham, the miniature race track was set out in one of the dampest, soggiest places in the parish – damp is woodlouse heaven. So racing was held in Baldthorns Copse, the watery source of the River Mole. Near to the bubbling spring that feeds the little river, each competitor placed their woodlouse ball on the starting line and waited – silently and with no movement. With no danger sensed, the woodlice gradually unroll. Persuading a woodlouse to move quickly in one direction was the great challenge. To encourage them along, competitors usually laid a trail of sticky fruit, often apple or pear juice, or maybe using their own secret concoction.

In another Sussex parish, Tillington, near Petworth, some more sporting competitors liked to paint their woodlice, nail polish a popular choice because it dries quickly. Tillington became famous for its multi-coloured sporting woodlice. If the painting was timed right, the fumes from the drying varnish would make them run very quickly. Here the sport died out in the early 20th century, although the Tillington Woodlouse Challenge Cup is still treasured in the village. Rusper, more recently, was the last place to witness this unique Good Friday survival.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ORDINARY AND

BREAKING THE SILENCE

As spring’s sunshine warms the air, the rush for life to reproduce and grow kicks up a gear. Buds are bursting, leaves unfurling and insects emerging. Many of our resident birds are setting up territories, looking for a mate, and starting to nest, while our summer visitors are arriving and eager to do the same. At this time of year the males exercise their vocal chords to their full potential to attract a partner and now is the best time to experience the phenomenon of the dawn chorus.

It starts in the pitch black, when all is still and quiet. A single voice cuts through the dark, breaking the silence. Often the first to sing are the robin and the song thrush, one joining the opening soloist to duet in the last of the night. The robins’ song is a strong and varied melody, fast and vigorous, while the song thrushes consists of a series of short, far-carrying phrases, repeated three or four times.

As the light starts to infiltrate the gloom, the beautiful unhurried flute-like voice of the blackbird joins in, mixed with the faster, sweet warble of dunnock and explosive burst of wren. Despite its diminutive size, the wren delivers a powerful cascade of notes ending in a distinctive trill which causes the bird to literally tremble with effort.

Close your eyes and soak up each expression of species declaring its presence to the world. I’m alive! I’m here! Hear me! The individual incantations merging into one choral ensemble, growing in stature, complexity and volume.

Dawn is breaking and as the dimness fades, a beautiful carpet of bluebells is revealed, heralded by warblers, joining the growing chorus. Willow warblers and chiffchaffs are almost impossible to distinguish apart but easily identified when they start to sing. The chiffchaff repeats its name over and over as regular as a metronome while the willow warbler’s song is a wonderfully evocative downward spiral and one my favourite sounds of spring. The rich, clear tune of the blackcap stands out, varying in tempo and culminating with a flourish. The male of this little warbler, as its name suggests, sports a smart black cap on an otherwise indistinct grey-brown body, while the female has a chestnut cap.

Now the morning glow brightens and the chaffinch adds its lively rattling verse, while great and blue tits bring their seesawing almost mechanical intonations. The wood is alive now as the full orchestra reaches its glorious crescendo. This is the dawn chorus and a delightful event that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.

Meanwhile, as our countryside comes alive with birdsong, the jumbled phrases and harsh ‘churr’ of whitethroats rise from hedgerows and scrub. The males often perch high on the tops of bushes to sing with jumbled phrases, giving good views of their slate grey heads, reddish-brown backs and of course their white throats. Deep within the vegetation sedge warblers add to the mix with their loud clicks, whistles and rambling chatter. Sounding similar but found deep in the reed beds, the obviously named reed warbler noisily announces its presence with its continuous rattling conversation, while its nemesis, the cuckoo adds its classic springtime call.

A CLYMPING GREAT LOCAL PUB

The Black Horse is a Grade-II listed property dating back to the 17th Century when it was a smugglers inn. It was formerly the White Horse in 1851 and even the White Swan briefly in 2013. It is now owned by Historic Sussex Hotels, and the pub has gone through an extensive renovation and is now open for business.

“This 17th century pub has always been a popular haunt for locals to gather, a well-loved and welcoming place for the community, families and visitors to the area and it’s time to re-ignite this tradition with our choice of pub classics, fine ales, Sussex wine, locally inspired cocktails, craft beers and delicious food,” says the new Black Horse, General Manager, Luca Pearson

The existing downstairs bar area has been stripped back and the parquet wooden floor carefully restored. A beautiful chimney stack has been uncovered and now houses a double-sided wood burner stove. A sparkling, pewter bar runs almost the width of the pub allowing lots of space to order drinks, and all the original wooden banquette seating has been repaired. They have created a stunning oak frame extension called The Ryebank, where people eating or drinking at the back of the pub can enjoy the view over the terrace and local rife. And outside tables at the front will be perfect in the warmer weather.

Where were you working before? I was working at The Beach Café in Littlehampton, before that I lived and worked in the French Alps for a luxury ski chalet company, and I did a brief stint for British Airways as cabin crew.

Do you come from Sussex? I moved to Sussex eight years ago, originally from Farnham in Surrey – not a million miles away!

What are you hoping to achieve? We are keen that The Black Horse plays a key role in, and reclaims its place, at the heart of the local community. We want to create a pub where locals come for a drink, and to meet friends, the place for a no nonsense but delicious lunch or dinner as well as the place to celebrate a birthday or anniversary and have fun.

What are your plans for the pub? I have plenty of lively evenings planned throughout the year with all sorts of entertainment from quiz nights to live music nights.

What are the opening times? We are open seven days a week, Monday to Thursday from 8am to 10pm, Friday and Saturday from 8am to 11pm and Sunday from 8am to 7pm. Roasts on Sunday will be a big thing – make sure you join us for a clymping great roast!

Will it be a family pub? Yes of course! Smaller portions if there is something they fancy on the main menu, or we have a kid’s menu. We have also created a glorious pink private room, perfect for cosy celebrations, a fun family lunch or noisy dinner party.

Are dogs welcome? Yes of course! Welcomed with lots of cuddles and treats.

When are you serving food? Food will be served throughout the day, from breakfast through to dinner.

Chris Taylor joined the Royal Navy and since has flown over 400 types of fixed wing aircraft and helicopters and is also an established author. After gaining a degree in Electrical Engineering he became a Navigation Officer serving on numerous ships and went onto operating Wasp and Lynx helicopters.

Chris became an Experimental Test Pilot who flew all manner of experimental aircraft for research and development purposes before joining the Empire Test Pilots’ School as a Flight Test instructor. He is a licensed Category 1 Test Pilot and Flight Test instructor for both aeroplanes and helicopters, which arguably makes him one of the best qualified and most widely experienced test pilots working today.

In this talk, Chris discusses some of the more challenging aspects of his time as a flight test instructor as well as his work on a number of cutting-edge research projects whilst with the Experimental Flying Squadron.

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton Our hero awakens in a mysterious, damp forest, clad in an unfamiliar tuxedo and inhabiting a body that isn’t his own. With no recollection of his identity or how he came to be in this situation, he makes his way to Blackheath House, and soon discovers he is Aiden Bishop, trapped there for a purpose. A masked figure reveals to him that a disguised murder is set to occur that day. Bishop has eight attempts to unravel it, reliving the same day in different bodies, each termed a “host.” He retains memories from each host, but failure to identify the killer by the eighth cycle means a reset to day one, with all memories wiped, a cycle he has already undergone numerous times.

As Bishop gradually begins to make sense of his predicament, he learns of competitors: two others at the country house party are also inhabiting foreign souls, each racing to solve the murder to escape the time loop. As if this was not enough peril, a relentless psychopath is also pursuing him, threatening each of his hosts.

Author Turton masterfully orchestrates a narrative replete with diverse, enigmatic characters, while scattering random clues throughout. The ‘rules’ of the story rules evolve as Bishop navigates his way through each day. I’m doubting that many readers will solve the mystery before the final plot twist.

It’s Agatha Christie, Cluedo, and Groundhog Day, with a twist of time loop chaos. It takes a while to orientate yourself within the story but it’s well worth the effort. Turton’s debut novel is inventive, chaotic, and brilliantly bonkers. Buckle up and hold on tight.

Look Up! by Nathan Bryon and illustrated by Dapo Adeola Rocket dreams of becoming the most brilliant star-catcher, and space explorer in the world, like her idol Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space. Fizzing with excitement about an imminent meteor shower, Rocket makes an announcement about it over the supermarket loudspeaker while the cashier is distracted. She makes and distributes flyers to all the shoppers, despite her older brother Jamal’s disapproval and embarrassment. Jamal is usually engrossed in his phone and video games and finds Rocket annoying. When he’s too absorbed in gaming to take Rocket to the park to see the meteor shower, Rocket faces a dilemma. But visitors reacting to the flyers suddenly turn up at her door. Everybody has turned up to save the day in the most delightful manner.

Bryon and Adeola’s captivating picture book introduces us to chatty, Rocket, a character whose passion for space is all-consuming. Adeola’s characterful illustrations capture Jamal’s angsty teenage moodiness and Rocket’s excitement about stargazing. Packed with space facts and insights into meteors, this book also beautifully depicts family dynamics, sibling bonds, and a young girl’s contagious zeal for the cosmos.

Lorraine Stevens of the Felpham History Group, part of the Felpham Village Conservation Society, found a fascinating list of jobs that once existed in the Post Office work force. Here are a few wonderful job titles:

Batteryman – (Telegraphs) Manual worker in the engineering grades of the Telegraph service. Carman – Driver of a horse-drawn van. Commander of Telegraphs –(Telegraphs) A senior officer on board a PO cable-laying ship (Cable Ship/Telegraph Ship) held the rank of ‘Navigating Commander’. Fourth secretary – Top-level post created in 1875 as a final promotion for Frederic Hill, Assistant Secretary (and brother of Sir Rowland Hill). Sir Rowland was Felpham resident, Judy Armson’s, great, great, great Uncle. See the last issue of Felpham in Focus. Indian Mail Officer – Clerk from the PO Secretary’s Office in London who accompanied dispatches of mail to India as far as the Mediterranean. Mail Guard – Protected the mail on horse-drawn mail coaches in the late 18th century. The role transferred to on board mail trains and at stations when the railways took over the carriage of mail in the 1830s-1850s.

As a child, Laurie visited relatives in Southend, Southsea Brighton, and he began a lifelong love affair with the seaside. So, it’s no surprise he jumped at the chance to move to Felpham in July 2023 with his dog (part lurcher/part tornado) and two cats.

Laurie says: “I am interested in the ways we fit into our ever-changing environments together with the animals who share our lives. I developed a love of watercolours and pastels whilst painting in the fields and villages of the Loire Valley and mixed media whilst experimenting with found objects.

“I paint on paper and the pages of French books left to me by my family. I explore my environment through my art, both the textures and power of the sea and the way the elements interact with the animals and people who occupy it.

“I paint from sketches and photographs in my studios in Felpham overlooking the sea, and in France. I sketch when I travel and when I return.”

You can see Laurie’s work at the Sage and Salt exhibition (23 March to 20 April), at the Brighton and Hove Council Art Show (17 to 20 April), on the Chichester Art Trail (18-19 May, 25-26, 27 May). LETTER TO ARUN DISTRICT COUNCIL

Councillors have requested that I write to you to officially complain in the strongest terms regarding the decision not to invite Felpham Parish Council to take part in the recent Arun Flood Forum despite a request to attend.

Following a recent FOI request to the Environment Agency we were informed that ‘In the short term, the EA have committed to carrying out a silt survey of the rife, jointly funded with Southern Water, to help inform the flood risk management actions landowners can take in the area. Building on our recent flood recovery work with partners, with the established Arun Flood Forum we also plan to continue discussions with local residents and stakeholders throughout 2024 to understand a combined approach to managing flood risk in the catchment.

In the long term, work completed as part of the Aldingbourne Rife Integrated Flood Risk Management Study identified two key locations where options for fluvial flood risk reduction should be investigated: Barnham and Felpham. We undertook some additional modelling/assessment work to confirm the scale of flood risk reduction that could be achieved in Barnham, and to help us assess the impact on flood risk of making changes to the pumping regime at Felpham. These projects are on our programme, and we will be using evidence gathered from recent events, alongside any future discussions within the Arun Flood Forum, to inform the business case for each.

As the discussions within the Arun Flood Forum will inform the business case for the EA project within Felpham, Councillors would like a clear explanation as to why Felpham Parish Council was not invited to participate. We would also like to request official minutes of the last meeting.

This letter will be published in Felpham in Focus and to represent our residents we would like to request that we are included in the invitation to attend future meetings.

Changes to Arun District Council’s free car parks in Felpham and Middleton-on-Sea Car Parks Update from Arun District Council

From 1 April 2024, Arun District Council propose the introduction of a new maximum free stay period within Grassmere (Felpham), Links Avenue (Felpham) and Shrubbs Field (Middleton-onSea) free car parks.

It is proposed that the maximum free parking times will be changing with a no return period also being introduced. Please see the new free parking times and no return periods below:

Grassmere car park – 8 hours free parking, no return within 2 hours.

Links Avenue – 2 hours free parking, no return within 6 hours.

Shrubbs Field – 8 hours free parking, no return within 2 hours.

Visitors will need to obtain a free-of-charge ticket from a ticket machine located within the car parks. The ticket must be clearly displayed on the dashboard.

Blue Badge holders can continue to park within all Arun District Council car parks all day, without obtaining a ticket, as long as a valid Blue Badge is clearly displayed.

Introducing the ticket machines would enable us to collect usage data on these car parks. This data can be used to inform decisions taken by Arun District Council, in partnership with the parish councils, regarding any future changes to the car parks.

The changes would also deter abuse of the car park, allowing a greater turnover of vehicles and will identify abandoned vehicles earlier, enabling their removal, ensuring availability for residents and visitors.

We have noticed that there has been speculation about the cost of the machines and their installation and maintenance. We can confirm the installation cost is £150 per machine, not the £3000 that has been shared. The machines themselves are stock and are therefore not an additional cost to the council. The ongoing maintenance and restocking of the machines will be encompassed under our existing car park contract.

Honorary Freedom of the Parish

Councillor Bob Budd nominated Gloria Moss as the first recipient of the ‘Honorary Freedom of the Parish’ in recognition of the work undertaken by Gloria which has been of unique benefit to the Parish Council particularly in relation to Felpham Emergency Resilience Group and public use defibrillators. It was also noted that Volunteer President Gloria Moss, has been volunteering with the British Red Cross for over 40 years and recently received the British Empire Medal (BEM) which is given to mark the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the UK. This was seconded by Councillor Glen Hewlett and unanimously agreed.

AN ANNUAL PLEASURE

Every year since I began to garden, come spring, I grabbed my spade and in a fit of enthusiasm I dug over the soil. Then I filled any empty spaces with annuals. These might be carefully nurtured in my greenhouse, sprinkled direct from the packet, or purchased in packs at my local garden centre.

Several years ago, due to an injury, I was unable to get out and begin this frenzy of activity. I resigned myself to the fact that my garden simply wouldn’t be as colourful that year. Nature however had other plans.

As I waited for my perennials to surface something wonderful happened. Hundreds of self-sown annuals from the previous year also began to surface. They’d been there all along, just waiting for the warm spring sun to bring them to life.

It occurred to me that my habit of stopping deadheading towards the end of the season (to leave some interesting seed heads which feed the birds and look so pretty covered in frost) had benefitted me in more ways than the one I’d intended.

Calendula, Candytuft, Cosmos, Larkspur, Nicotiana, Poppies, Sweet Alyssum and Love-in-a-Mist were popping up everywhere I looked. I’ve never been so delighted.

I waited until they were a couple of inches tall then on a slightly drizzly day I eased some out and transferred them to barer soil. My reward was a display of annuals every bit as lovely as if I’d spent hours with my spade and trowel.

So last year I experimented. Throughout the flowering season I noted where I might need an extra patch or two of colour and then, when I stopped deadheading, I simply grabbed a few seed heads and dropped them in the appropriate spot.

That spring and summer I had another beautiful display of annuals. Why hadn’t I discovered this lazy way to garden before? Of course, there are some teeny disadvantages. The main one is that annuals grown from seed flower later than those bought as plugs or plants from garden centres. Don’t let this put you off though. If you have a good range of perennials the annuals can take their time, taking over when the others begin to fade. Also, no-one says it has to be all or nothing. I have a passion for cosmos, so I bring in a few plants early on every year. That way I can savour their pretty blooms right through the season.

So, if you’re planting annuals this spring, plan ahead a little. Look at your garden as an evolving piece of work and let at least some of them self-seed. Then next year don’t be so quick to brandish a spade … you’ll gain two commodities gardeners always need more of … time and money.

Saturday 22 June – Marking the 80th Anniversary of D-Day

In June 1944 the town’s people and those from the surrounding area were very much on the frontline of the largest armed invasion in history, conducted by sea, air and land, resulting in the liberation of Europe less than a year later. To east and west of Bognor Regis, thousands of ships left harbours and ports carrying troops and equipment. Thousands of allied troops, particularly Canadians, billeted in the town and surrounding area, left in a matter of hours. Many never returned to their homes and families. Air operations were conducted from local airfields, including RAF Bognor. Hundreds of allied bombers, troop-carrying aircraft and gliders streamed overhead on their way to Normandy.

Our Armed Forces Day will honour the D-Day Veterans who survive in our community today and those who gave their lives in the run up, during and in the aftermath of D-Day. It is estimated around 1.5 million allied troops took part in “Operation Overlord” the code name given to the operation. The Cenotaph outside the Bognor Regis Town Hall records 260 service personnel and civilians from the area who gave their lives in World War Two. Flansham Park Health Centre are sad to report that April sees our Practice Manager Susie Devine moving on to new pastures. We would like to take this opportunity to look back on Susie's time at FPHC and recognise her achievements over the last 20 years.

In 2004, Susie embarked on a journey that would shape her career and leave a lasting impact on Flansham Park Health Centre. Starting as a Health Care Assistant,

Susie's dedication and passion for healthcare quickly became evident to all who worked alongside her.

As the years passed, Susie's ambition and leadership qualities became increasingly apparent. She became Deputy Practice Manager under the guidance of Alison Cockburn, and later was appointed as the practice manager, a role that allowed her to utilise her skills in organisation, communication, and decision-making to ensure the smooth operation of the health centre.

Under Susie's guidance, Flansham Park Health Centre has flourished. She has been central to a huge number of changes within the surgery and provided much needed stability during the Covid pandemic.

However, after twenty years of dedicated service, Susie has made the decision to move on to new opportunities. While she will be sorely missed we wish her all the very best in her new ventures.

Susie's legacy at Flansham Park Health Centre will not be forgotten. Her unwavering dedication, professionalism, and compassion have left an indelible mark on our surgery and the countless lives she has touched throughout her tenure.

As Susie embarks on this new chapter in her career, she carries with her the gratitude and well-wishes of her colleagues and the community she has served so faithfully. The companionship of pets has been cherished across cultures and epochs. The bond between man and animal, while emotionally fulfilling, also harbours significant psychological and physical benefits, contributing to an owner's well-being. From the wag of a dog's tail to the purr of a cat, pets offer more than just companionship; they provide a unique form of support that enhances human health.

Psychologically, pets serve as a constant source of comfort and companionship, effectively reducing feelings of loneliness and depression. The presence of a pet can offer a sense of unconditional acceptance and love, which can be particularly therapeutic. Studies have shown that pet owners, on average, exhibit lower levels of stress and anxiety compared to those without pets. This calming influence is partly attributed to the increase in levels of oxytocin, a stressreducing hormone, which is released during interactions with animals. Engaging with a pet can also elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters associated with happiness and tranquillity.

Pets require a routine of care, providing structure and purpose to their owners' lives. This responsibility can significantly benefit individuals suffering from mental health issues by offering a distraction from troubling thoughts, encouraging mindfulness, and promoting a sense of achievement and self-worth. For instance, walking a dog not only demands physical activity but also encourages social interaction with other dog owners, combating isolation and promoting community belonging.

Physically, the benefits of owning certain types of pets extend to improved cardiovascular health. Dog owners, are more likely to meet daily physical activity recommendations, leading to lower blood pressure, reduced cholesterol levels, and decreased risk of obesity. The act of walking a dog or engaging in play provides moderate exercise, contributing to the owner’s overall physical health. Furthermore, pet owners have been found to have a lower risk of heart disease, with some studies suggesting that they may also experience faster recovery rates from heart attacks.

Pets also play a role in child development, teaching children responsibility, empathy, and compassion. The presence of pets in a home can reduce the likelihood of developing allergies and asthma in children, as exposure to pet dander and the microorganisms that pets carry from outdoors can strengthen the immune system during its developmental stages.

In addition to these benefits, pets can serve in therapeutic roles, such as in animal-assisted therapy programs, helping individuals recover from or cope with health challenges such as PTSD, autism, and stroke. The interaction with therapy animals has been shown to improve motivation, engagement, and overall mood in patients undergoing rehabilitation or treatment for chronic conditions.

DEMENTIA SUPPORT IN FELPHAM

Local charity Dementia Support is running friendly local sessions for those living with dementia, carers and those seeking social companionship. These include singing, creative activities, chair-based exercise, and lots of chatting over refreshments. You can also chat to one of the Wayfinders from Sage House, for expert advice and support.

Wayfinders are the charity’s specialist advisors who help people understand how to deal with dementia, whether diagnosed or not. They provide help, advice and emotional support for anyone with concerns about themselves or a family member.

Drop into to Felpham Memorial Village Hall (PO22 7DZ) and join our FREE sessions every Friday 10:30am – 12:00pm, starting on 19 April. There is no charge and no need to book, although donations to the charity are welcome. We can’t wait to see you there!

SHAKESPEARE DAY

Shakespeare Day (23 April) celebrates the iconic playwright and we thought we would join in by sharing some intriguing facts.

• He wanted to be an actor – William moved to London, closely followed by his brother Edmund who pursued the same dream of treading the boards. However, Shakespeare found his true calling in writing, quickly becoming adept at crafting tragedies and comedies that captivated audiences.

• He was prolific – Shakespeare’s literary output was remarkable; he authored at least 37 plays that we are aware of, which works out to an impressive rate of about two plays per year. Additionally, he crafted many poems, particularly sonnets, publishing 154 of them in 1609 alone.

• He survived a pandemic – Like us, Shakespeare experienced the devastation of a pandemic, surviving several outbreaks of the bubonic plague. Tragically, his son Hamnet succumbed to the disease at the age of 11, a loss that deeply influenced Shakespeare’s work, infusing his plays with themes of illness, death, and mourning. It’s speculated that the character Hamlet was named in homage to his late son.

• He invented words and phrases – Shakespeare also contributed numerous phrases to the English language, including “vanished into thin air,” “wild goose chase,” “not a wink of sleep,” and “break the ice.” Known for his wit, he crafted memorable insults such as “Thy face is not worth sunburning,” “Thou art as fat as butter,” and the magnificent “You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe!”

• He was a savvy businessman – Beyond his literary genius, Shakespeare understood how to get ahead in business. He was a co-owner of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men and the Globe Theatre, an open-air venue established in London in 1599. He also ventured into the more luxurious Blackfriars Theatre, underscoring his dual talent as both a visionary playwright and a shrewd entrepreneur.

BANANA AND WALNUT LOAF

Preparation time: 20 mins. Cooking time: 60-70 mins. Add 1 hr chilling time. Serves: 4.

INGREDIENTS

225g plain flour

2 level tsp baking powder

80g softened or spreadable butter

1 large egg (beaten)

110g caster sugar

METHOD

• Preheat oven to 180C / gas 4. Grease and line a 2lb loaf tin.

• Mash three bananas to a pulp and chop the fourth.

4 medium bananas (peeled)

50g walnuts (chopped)

Zest 1 lemon

Demerara sugar for sprinkling

• Sift the flour and baking powder together into a separate bowl. Add the butter, egg and caster sugar. Using a mixer mix everything together for a minute or two. Add the mashed and chopped bananas and briefly whisk them into the mixture. Fold in the chopped walnuts and lemon zest.

• Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared tin. Sprinkle with demerara sugar.

• Place in the pre-heated oven so that the top of the tin is in the centre. Bake for 60-70 minutes until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean.

• Let the cake cool for 10-15 minutes then turn out on to a cooling rack.

• This cake is good served warm with crème fraiche, cold, or even toasted.

BOGNOR PROM 10K ROAD RACE

Thirty years ago the Bognor Prom 10k Road Race held its inaugural event. Initially organised by the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham and now in partnership with Bognor Regis Tone Zone Runners.

With a two year pause during the Pandemic, the 28th Race will take place on Sunday 12 May and is open to runners aged 15 years upwards. A 1.5k Junior Fun run for children aged 4-14 years takes place before the Race which is an inclusive race open to wheelchair entrants and those with other needs.

The Race Village is located in West Park next to the Start/Finish line on Silverston Avenue. The course runs along the Promenade, past Butlins, through Felpham village, along Limmer Lane before turning back onto the Prom for the final leg. Finishers will receive a medal and a rewards leaflet full of great offers from local businesses.

It is well known as a course for those wishing to achieve a personal best, with spectators lining the course in support making it a fantastic event for the Bognor Regis community. Places are selling fast for this popular race, so if you are interested sign up now before it’s too late!

The Race was set up to benefit local charities and continues to be one of our main focuses. This year we champion Cancer United based in Angmering. Their work in Sussex to fight Cancer through fitness is absolutely essential with their founder Jan Sheward named in 2023’s honours list.

WHY IBS CAN BE A PAIN...LITERALLY

Unglamorous they may be, but our guts are complex and clever. The gut is an hydraulic engineering system with its own brain and nervous system; its own immune system and its own hormoneproducing system. It deals with digestion and absorption and defends us against infection.

Gut contents are squeezed along by muscular action. The various parts are separated by sphincters, little muscular trapdoors, which regulate speed and direction of travel. Food takes about 24 hours to travel through a healthy gut.

Because the gut is so complex perhaps it’s unsurprising that it malfunctions quite easily.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common problem experienced and up to 1 in 5 of us may suffer it at some point. Sufferers can experience constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, nausea, and colic. But why?

Gut muscles mix and move the contents, but the gut has to know what it’s dealing with, so it knows which digestive hormones to release, when to release them and in what quantities (it doesn’t want to digest itself!)

Amazingly, it can detect different molecular structures which make up the foods we eat. It knows which ones require the release of bile for instance and which ones don’t. The enteric nervous system, which governs all this, functions like a second brain and is very finely attuned. It has to be bombarded with food, drink, and air, it’s a constant challenge for the gut to maintain constancy.

Our brain pays close attention to the ‘gut brain’ and researchers have found that if the enteric nervous system is stimulated it can help depression, epilepsy and even memory. In fact, 90% of gut nerves take information to the brain and only 10% receive information from it.

IBS has historically been thought of as a psychological or neurotic problem but in fact scientists are now discovering that the close communication between brain and gut means that stress can cause very real problems, impairing the nerve function and causing marked sensory pain. If we know that a sufferer experiences more pain when they are stressed we can use neurochemicals to block the response. Tri-cyclics are particularly helpful agents.

There is also a relationship with serotonin (often connected with depression). In fact, 95% of the body’s serotonin is found in the gut. Detector cells in the lining of the gut squirt serotonin which excites the nerve fibres. Some people cannot turn this process off again though which can either cause diarrhoea, or, if the nerves are stimulated to the point of exhaustion, constipation.

People with IBS often give up hope of relieving their discomfort, but there is now good quality medical help available, so consult your GP. You don’t have to suffer.

The Regis Centre and Alexandra Theatre are currently closed for renovation and refurbishment but the entertainment team is still very busy providing a host of events for the local community.

One such event is the popular 2 O’Clock Club – a monthly afternoon entertainment event now hosted at the Salvation Army Church in Bognor Regis. Entertainment in April includes music from a Shanty group – the Selsey Shantymen (2 April), singers of 60’s and 70’s hits – Karen Williams (7 May), and even a variety of musical theatre. Expect a warm welcome, some friendly chat, and a hot drink and biscuits as part of the ticket price.
