WELCOME Hello everyone, I hope you are keeping well. It’s April already and although we are not out of the woods yet, it does feel like the Covid tide has turned.

This time last year, we had no vaccine, no road map and no idea when we could genuinely look forward to the future. This month we might be able to go shopping and get a haircut and local businesses can start to get back on their feet.

This is why I am supporting the Back in Business #shoplocalsussex campaign launched yesterday by local Sussex-radio station V2 Radio.

Now, more than ever it’s very important that our local communities rally together to help boost the Sussex economy and support our small and independent businesses we are lucky enough to have in West Sussex, many of whom advertise in this magazine.

WHY DO WE HAVE AN EASTER BUNNY?

BY CHARLIE STEWART (13¾) My Dad is a teacher and when I was in Year Two he dressed up as a huge, white fluffy bunny and bounced around the school giving eggs out to the children as a special surprise.

My sister, Emily, was in Nursery and she was very excited to see a large bunny visiting her classroom but she couldn’t understand why he was wearing Daddy’s shoes!

I was thinking about this story the other day and wondering where in fact the Easter bunny comes from?

Although the Bible makes no specific mention of a long-eared, fluffy animal who delivers eggs to well-behaved children on Easter Sunday, the Easter bunny has now become a standout figure during the Easter period.

Many families have an Easter Egg hunt around the house or in the garden – and when a chocolate egg is discovered under a hedge, behind a flowerpot or down the side of a chair – it is the Easter bunny children should thank.

The exact origins of this mythical mammal are unclear, but rabbits themselves are a symbol of new life and fertility. Some sources state that the Easter bunny first arrived in America in the 1700’s with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and transported their tradition of an egg-laying hare called ‘Osterhase’. The children in the American town made nests for the hares and this was where the creature could lay its beautifully coloured eggs.

Eventually, this trend spread across other parts of America and this fabled rabbit’s Easter morning deliveries expanded to include chocolate and sweet treats for the children of America to enjoy. The children often left out carrots for the bunny in case he got hungry from all his hopping.

This shows similarities to Santa Claus because, as you know, children across the world often leave out carrots and treats for the reindeer on Christmas Eve. We also have an Easter bunny because rabbits usually give birth to a big litter of babies which are known as kittens. These baby rabbits have become a symbol of new life like the Easter egg, and these two things combined mean that chocolate bunnies have joined our Easter celebrations and they are definitely something to look forward to (even the adults can’t pass up a bit of chocolate!)

Easter is a day of celebration and for Christians it is the most important festival of the year. I hope you get chance to celebrate this national holiday a little this year – it will be extra special I hope, as there is a chance we may be able to see a few friends and family members. Happy Easter and, whatever your plans, I do hope the Easter bunny pays you all a visit!

DID YOU KNOW? 1. Easter is called Easter because it was named after the Anglo-Saxon goddess, Eostre, who is known as a fertility goddess.

2. More than 1.5 million Cadbury creme eggs are produced every day in the UK. 3. In 2012 twenty-seven bakeries in Argentina worked for two weeks to make enough chocolate for a giant Easter egg that weighed over four tonnes. The gargantuan concoction was wheeled in to the Chocolate Festival in Bariloche and was over 27ft high (8.5m) and 16ft wide (5m).

4. Pretzels used to be associated with Easter because the twists resemble arms crossing in prayer.

LOCAL HISTORY BY SYLVIA ENDACOTT In these uncertain times, we know that when we visit the centre of town again, we will find shops have closed with no mention of their past. However this is not true for one shop, that of Burtons in London Road.

Montague Burton established his company in 1903 supplying uniforms to the army. Eventually he became famous for his high quality made-to-measure suits at low prices, with a slogan of ‘A five guinea suit for 55 shillings’. He eventually built over 600 shops countrywide. The company was very public spirited and all their shops had a side door to enable men to go upstairs, play billiards and have hot soup. There was also a small shop at the front where children could buy sweets.

Their shop arrived here in Bognor Regis in 1937 and if you look at the outside of the shop you can clearly see a number of small plaques stating who was involved in the store opening. There is also a small grill which depicts the famous Burton name – The Taylor of Taste. Nationally, the company was referred to as a ‘cathedral of commerce. In 2015 when I first started to research this shop there was mention of how it was still with us and into the future. Things have changed considerably, and they are now a forgotten name, but for this one shop today, the plaques still remain outside the premises built to help the unemployed workers in the 1920s and 1930s.

LOCKDOWN WALKING BY SIMON BAKER IRONS We are still not able to travel very far so we need to be imaginative with our local walks. This has enabled me to find out so much more about the area that I thought I knew so well. I have highlighted three walks which I hope will inspire you to really explore the beautiful place where we live. More details of these walks can be found on my blog – piertopiertrekking.com Felpham Parish Border Walk A 12km circular walk following the civil parish border of Felpham, it is surprising how much of the border can be followed and where the furthest extremes are. The route from Flansham follows the A259 until Worms Wood where it heads south along what was once the old Littlehampton Road. It then passes through the residential areas of Flansham Park and Summerley Fields to the sea, where the furthest accessible point to the east is located at Hannah’s Groyne on the edge of the Middleton greensward. The border heads west along the seafront to Butlins and is furthest south at the junction with Longbrook.

Walk through Longbrook Park around Butlins and then follow the Aldingbourne Rife, through Felpham Recreation space and fields to the rear of the leisure centre and schools, furthest west is on the river edge in these fields with Shripney supermarkets just a stone’s throw away. Woodpeckers can often be seen in these fields and the odd deer too. Pick up the public footpath through the golf course and the point where the path rejoins the Rife is the furthest north. The route leaves the parish border here and meets it again at the edge of Blakes Mead where it goes round the flood relief ponds on the far side of the Charles Purley Way. This route can be started at any point.

Words in Stone and Steel Inspired by Sylvia Endacott’s booklet Words in Stone and Steel this circular walk visits all the plaques in Felpham that stretch from the village centre to the edge of Bognor and out to Hoe Lane. The plaques feature notable historical events in the village including St Mary’s Church lychgates erected in honour of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and the memorial of the Hampden bomber that crashed near Sea Road. Many blue plaques in the locality also feature the significant people of the area.

From Sea to Source A 9km route from Felpham beach that follows the Lidsey Rife to its source. The Rife meets the sea through a sluice just west of the Felpham SSSI, a 1-hectare site of coastline which is one of only three sites in Britain to have fossils of flora dating back 66 million years to Paleocene epoch. Sea defences have been constructed at the mouth of the river since the 15th Century and been rebuilt many times over the years after being breached by the sea. The lower part of the rife can be tracked north through Longbrook Park and in 680AD this part was called ‘Brynes Fleot’ and would have curved through the site that is now Butlins. In 1953, during the construction of Butlins, the Rife was straightened and can be seen again after following the perimeter of the holiday resort.

The Rife provides a natural border to Felpham and winds its way from here through fields between Glenwood and the schools, the river splits and one section heads towards Shripney known as the Aldingbourne Rife, whereas the Lidsey Rife continues to the golf course. Follow the public footpath through the golf course and rejoin the river further up, head under the viaduct and continue following river north. The Barnham cycle path runs parallel to the river as it begins to narrow and many tributaries can be seen leading into the river including the Ryebank Rife by the solar farm. The Rife continues through agricultural fields and further decreases in size, it is rejoined at its source where it can clearly be seen emerging from under the old canal near to Tile Barn Farm. Many wildfowl and deer can be seen on this route.

SPANISH BAKED EGGS Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 25 minutes Serves: 2 Ingredients 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely sliced 120g Chorizo, sliced 1 yellow pepper, finely sliced 1 orange or red pepper, finely sliced 2 cloves garlic, crushed

½ tsp sweet smoked paprika 400g can of chopped tomatoes 1 tbsp capers (optional) 2 large eggs (4 if you’re really hungry!)

2 tbsp fresh chopped flat-leaf parsley 2 thick slices of bread

Method Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Use a frying pan with an ovenproof handle. Heat the olive oil, then add the onion and chopped chorizo. Soften for 5 minutes. Add the peppers and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until they soften too. Stir in the crushed garlic and sweet smoked paprika, cook for another 1 minute. Pour in the tomatoes and add the capers, lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes, until the tomatoes reduce and thicken a little.

Make two or four wells in the thick sauce and gently crack an egg into each.

Place the pan into the preheated oven for 10 minutes, or until the whites are set but the yolks are still runny.

Towards the end of the cooking time, toast the bread.

Removes the eggs from the oven, scatter with the parsley and serve with the toasted bread, drizzled with a little olive oil.

THE CUCKOO FIX

This time last year I wrote an article about hearing cuckoos and other sounds of spring that I was looking forward to experiencing. Then lockdown happened and I never did hear my cuckoos. So this April I await with anticipated excitement to get my fix of this celebrated bird and other seasonal arrivals. Although cuckoos have declined dramatically, you can still hear their symbolic calls and if you’re lucky see them, around our reserves of Pagham Harbour and Medmerry from April into June. The prospect alone is enough to lift my spirits.

Meanwhile, buds are bursting and leaves unfurling, while spring flowers splash colour across the countryside. Trees, bushes, and plants are waking from their wintry slumber, full of energy and vigorous growth. In turn, this explosion of greenery brings out an army of hungry insects. Bees, butterflies, caterpillars, beetles … all eating, feeding, mating … They of course, are what our migrant birds have timed their arrival for. A feast for themselves and the families they come here to raise.

Over at Medmerry’s Stilt Pools, avocets will Cuckoo be busy courting and starting to build their nests of aquatic roots and leaves. Their striking monochrome plumage and long thin upturned bill make them instantly obvious and recognisable.

However, most ground nesting birds, of which there are many, particularly in our countryside and around our reserves, are not so strikingly adorned.

In fact, the point of their plumage, is not to be seen at all – camouflage!

Skylarks, pipits, yellowhammers, linnets, corn bunting and warblers like the chiffchaff, all nest on the ground hidden in fields, tussocks and Avocet under bushes. Ring plovers make scrapes on shingle beaches merging into their background. Ducks and all manner of inconspicuous waders hide in the wet vegetation around pools. They are all trying not to be seen by predators and very good they are at it as well.

The problem is that they are so good, that they risk being disturbed by us as we take our exercise.

Disturbance is one the main threats to bird breeding success along with habitat loss and climate change. So it is really important now to stick to footpaths and keep our curious four-legged companions close and on the path too. That splashing in a pool or sniffing under the bush just a few meters off the pathway, may be life or death to a chiffchaff. Enjoy the sights and sounds of spring but please respect the nature that makes it such a wonderful time of year.

GARDEN VIEW HOE! HOE! HOE!

BY RACHEL LEVERTON Following on from last month’s list of essential garden tools for beginners I thought I’d explain about the humble hoe. When I first started gardening, I didn’t really understand how to use one.

There are a couple of varieties of hoe and they are used in different ways, and they really are your friend at this time of year.

The hoe is actually one of the most ancient garden tools and came before the plough. It’s mentioned in Egyptian art, the Code of Hammurabi and in the Bible.

The reason spring is a great time to put your hoe to good use is because right now is when the annual weeds (the ones that self-seed freely and pop up all over the place every year) have started to germinate.

The aim when hoeing, aim to sever the top growth from the roots, just below the soil surface, then leave it in the sun to dry out and die. Hoeing is best done when the soil is dry as this creates a ‘dust mulch’ which inhibits the germination of new weeds.

I prefer a hoe with a long handle because it’s better for preventing back pain.

I also have a short-handled hoe known as an ‘onion hoe’ for closely planted areas. A shorted handle gives more control, so you don’t damage your prized plants.

It’s important to note that hoeing only kills the annual weeds, not the deeprooted perennial weeds, those need to be dug up by hand.

There is also a tool called a Dutch hoe.

This is used by sweeping it smoothly over the soil so that the surface is just ‘brushed’.

If used correctly it slices the tops from the weeds. It’s actually simple to use but you do need to practice your technique. Slice the tops of weeds by bringing the hoe towards you, altering the angle to accommodate slopes. When you turn over a Dutch hoe you can use it to make a shallow trench called a seed drill to sow larger seeds, like peas into. Larger seeds are better because they need to be covered well.

Your hoes need to be kept sharp and well maintained for maximum effectiveness. I use a metal file to both clean and sharpen, but you can buy sharpening stones reasonably cheaply and they are easy to use.

BY JOYCE PRITCHARD What would we have done without our parks and gardens during the Coronavirus pandemic lockdown? A question we have all asked ourselves, whatever the weather fresh air, a good walk gives us all time to stop and look forward to when we can see family and friends again.

History tells us Felpham is fortunate to have a number of parks, gardens and open spaces. An annual meeting of a Felpham club or friendly society was celebrated in 1816 with a procession and singing. Sports facilities were provided for residents and visitors from the early 20th century.

The 9-hole links of the Bognor Golf Club lay partly in Felpham after the boundary change of 1913, but were replaced by an 18-hole course in the north-west corner of the parish.

Tennis courts existed in Blake’s Road, where a tennis club was founded before c.1922 and there was also a putting green in 1928. After the incorporation of the west part of the ancient parish into Bognor Regis in 1933, the urban district council bought land for recreation south of Felpham Way, where King George V’s field was opened before 1940. The Arun Leisure Centre, built jointly

by Arun District and West Sussex County Councils and managed by the former, was opened at the then Felpham Comprehensive School in 1978. In 1992 the district council also owned Old Rectory gardens in Felpham village.

OLD RECTORY GARDENS Tucked away in the heart of Felpham Village is Old Rectory Gardens. This is an attractive spot with seating and is regularly used by the local residents of Felpham. At the end of February/beginning of March you can walk through the Gardens and see a carpet of 8000 purple crocuses, which were planted in 2017 by the Friends of Old Rectory Gardens, the Rotary Club and volunteers as part of the Polio Awareness Campaign. For the second year running the gardens were awarded the Green Flag Award. Donations from Society events and Arun District Council two new bench seats were erected in the park for use by the community.

KING GEORGE V PLAYING FIELDS Covering an area of approximately 13 acres, King George V Park & Playing Fields (right) is a popular and valuable resource used by local residents as well as visitors to relax, walk their dogs and exercise.

Facilities include football pitches, a basketball court and children’s play area.

LONGBROOK PARK Small seafront park between Felpham Village and Butlin’s. Pedestrian entrances from the seafront promenade and from Sea Road. Arun District Council installed the recreation exercise and play equipment, which includes a ‘pirate ship’. Snooks Community Group maintain the Park with regular litter picking and they organise the popular annual Dog Show.

At one of many balls she attends, Daphne meets the rather irascible Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings. The two form an unlikely friendship and, since neither of them is interested in marriage, they agree to a fake courtship, in the hope of avoiding advances from prospective husbands and wives.

But can it really work? And are they really so averse to marriage?

One of the charms of this novel is that you are reminded that no matter what era we are born into, we are all basically navigating the same pitfalls in life. Enjoy the ride!

The Big Ugly Monster and the Little Stone Rabbit by Chris Wormell Sometimes we all feel lonely. Sometimes all we want is a friend. The Big Ugly Monster is no different.

This wonderful picture book tells the story of a monster who is so ugly that no one will go near him. Lakes, rivers, and puddles hiss and dry up when he steps in them. Animals and birds run away from him. Flowers drop their petals and trees lose their leaves.

But one day he decides to make his own friend out of stone, and he carves a little stone rabbit.

We learn that he is only ugly on the outside and that he is a faithful, loving friend. A moving story that will stay with you long after the final page.

The last twelve months have been very difficult for us all and as the better weather approaches, we are all looking forward to getting back to more normal lives and being able to get out and about.

After some ‘shall we, shan’t we’ conversations, we are delighted to announce that the St Mary’s Flower Festival and Open Gardens Weekend will take place this summer. This popular village event, which is run every two years, will take place over the weekend of 3rd and 4th July, a month later than usual. St Mary’s Church will be bright with beautiful flower displays and local gardens will be open for the public to visit and admire.

A booklet will be produced, listing all of the gardens taking part and a map to show people how to plan their route around the village. Subject to the government guidance at the time, St Mary’s Centre will provide activities, stalls and refreshments.

Further details will be available nearer the time. However, organisers are now looking for additional gardens to be included in the event. TO RECEIVE AND DISCUSS THE DRAFT POLICY ON SOCIAL MEDIA: It was reported that Arun District Council (ADC) were currently working on a similar policy as part of the new Code of Conduct deliberations. It was therefore suggested that the Council put a hold on discussing a policy pending the receipt of ADC’s version, and so that the two documents could be compared, and a decision then made on a policy best suited to the Parish Council. It was agreed that this item be deferred pending further information from ADC. MAIN COUNCIL COMMITTEE: Item MC 164. TO RECEIVE THE REPORT OF COUNCILLOR HEWLETT ON THE OPTIONS FOR THE FELPHAM SEA FRONT LIGHTS: The information and graphs relating to this had been sent to all Councillors with their agendas for this meeting which included questions that had been raised by Councillors at the last meeting. Councillor Hewlett then briefly went through the document referring specifically to the three options proposed, and that his preferred option would be option 3. Councillor Hewlett’s preferred option was seconded by Councillor K. Watson, and on an unanimous vote it was RESOLVED that option 3 be pursued.

FINANCE & ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE Item F 106. ROAD TRAFFIC MITIGATION SCHEMES FOR FELPHAM: Councillor D. Smart advised that he had contacted WSCC regarding a possible Radar Speed Watch and had consulted PCSO Justy Grant. The Clerk advised that there was nothing else to report under this agenda item.

PROJECTS & RESILIENCE COMMITTEE Item PR 262. ANNUAL EVENTS: (FUN ON THE PROM) Following lengthy discussion it is with much regret that the decision has been taken to cancel this year’s Fun On The Prom. With so much uncertainty about the route towards normality and being ever mindful of the need of all involved to be able to plan ahead we felt it only fair to make a decision now rather than prolonging the issue with the potential of having to cancel nearer the time.

SKY VISITS FELPHAM IN MARCH COVID-19: What it’s like living in a village with 142 per cent rise in coronavirus cases.

Professor Jonathan Van-Tam said some areas of the UK are ‘burning quite hot’. Felpham being one such area that is now under the watchful eye of scientists. It is not considered to be an area of concern, but there is unusual activity in the data for the village – with no obvious reason why.

With a rise in cases, it means a rise in the number of people self-isolating and requiring help. A group of volunteers are on the front line, aiding those in need.

Felpham sits on the sunny West Sussex coast and basks in the joys of being a village far away from urban COVID-19 hotspots.

But it’s gained the attention of those in government for being an anomaly, as latest figures show there’s been a 142 per cent rise in coronavirus cases.

Dr Michael Head, a senior research fellow at the University of Southampton, says outbreaks like this one in West Sussex are going to be increasingly common as restrictions are eased.

FURTHER CYCLING SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS FOR FELPHAM Safety improvement upgrade the existing traffic signals junction which intersects Felpham Road, Felpham Way and Downview Road, Felpham which will improve safety for cyclists using the route. The safety improvement works include: Resurface the road to apply green advanced cycle stopline boxes on all four of the stopline positions at the junction.

Installation of new traffic signal equipment for the detection of cyclists and low-level traffic signal heads for cyclists. Software upgrades to the junction controller which will include pre-start times for cyclists at the junction and the installation of live streaming cameras to enable improved remote monitoring of the site. Reduction of the southern arm from a two-lane approach to a single lane approach to allow the installation of a lead-in cycle lane.

The scheme will cost approximately £60,000 and is part of continuing efforts to improve the highway network across the county.

LET THERE BE LIGHT IN FELPHAM As part of our ongoing maintenance and upgrade strategy, Felpham Parish Council has engaged contractors to change the existing lights illuminating the footpath on the east side of King George V Park to LED lights. These lights will offer greater reliability and are up to 80 per cent more efficient thus cutting energy costs and reducing our environmental footprint. These lights will offer a clearer, brighter light but are screened to ensure that there is no light spillage affecting our neighbours along that path.

OPTING FOR A FELPHAM POSTAL VOTE WILL REDUCE FOOTFALL Elections for West Sussex County Council, Police and Crime Commissioner and some local by-elections will take place on 6 May 2021, and due to the pandemic, arrangements will be different.

We are putting in place sensible safety measures at the polling stations that will be open, including cleaning, socially distanced queuing systems, face coverings being worn and hand sanitiser on site. We will also be able to send you an electronic poll card so that you don’t have to bring your paper copy, booths will be cleaned between each voter, and voters are encouraged to bring their own pencil or pen.

We know some of our residents may not find it as easy to get to their designated polling stations and we would ask them to consider applying for a postal vote on this instance or voting by proxy. HARD TIMES A WATER SOFTENER MIGHT CHANGE YOUR LIFE

BY KATE MCCARTHY You probably know that water can be rated ‘hard’ or ‘soft’, but do you know what those terms actually mean.

Water has varying levels of hardness based on calcium carbonate concentration. Water with less than 60 mg/L of calcium carbonate is considered soft, 61-120 mg/L is moderately hard, 121180 mg/L is hard, and above 180 mg/L is deemed very hard.

The water from your tap is safe to drink whether it’s hard or soft. Hard water may even have a few health benefits by fulfilling your dietary needs of essential minerals, such as calcium and magnesium. But while hard water is safe to ingest, the effect of hard water on hair and skin can be a different story. Hard water can leave behind a slight film making skin and hair feel less clean to the touch. It might cause dandruff in your hair and irritate skin problems such as eczema.

Washing clothes with hard water can cause the clothing fabric to break down more quickly over time, leave spots on dishes, and residue on your work surfaces and shower screens. Over time mineral build-up in your pipes may cause them to clog, and you’ll likely see build-up on shower heads and taps.

A water softener solves these problems by processing the hard water to turn it into soft water.

Water enters the softener and passes into the resin or media tank where it goes through a simple process that removes calcium, magnesium carbonate and manganese, leaving only soft water to exit the softener and be used around your home.

Plumbing a good water softener into your household supply is an investment for your home.

It will eliminate the limescale caused by minerals which build up and leave that white powdery residue which clogs shower heads and pipework, makes surfaces appear dirty and reduces the efficiency of your appliances.

Often, we don’t think about our appliances until they break down.

The most common reason for early appliance failure is limescale build-up which corrodes the heating elements of your kettle, washing machine, dishwasher, coffee machine and heating system. By removing the limescale, you start to protect your appliances, they work better, live longer, and cost you less money over time.

APPEAL FOR DESCENDANTS OF

Flying Officer PETER ASHFORTH HALLIWELL, RAF (VR), killed in action 4 April 1945 The church office recently received a request from Germany to help locate living relatives or descendants of a British WW2 airman who died in April 1945.

Flying Officer Peter Ashforth Halliwell’s single-seat Hawker Tempest V (NV660) of 274 Squadron RAF hit some telephone lines and crashed in Germany on 4 April 1945, only one month before the end of the war while on a low-flying mission. He was buried at the crash site. Upon the initiative of the post-war mayor appointed by the allies the grave site was reported, and he was reinterred in Rheinberg War Cemetery, which is in the care of the Commonwealth War Grave Commission.

So far research by a German historian of the war cemetery in Dötlingen (nr Oldenburg) could establish only a few facts about F/O Halliwell, and it is hoped that a local Felpham connection might help uncover more.

It is believed that F/O Halliwell was born in Newton Abbot, Devon in 1924 and had an older sister, Barbara, born in 1921. Their father, Frederick Bertram Halliwell, died when Peter was seven years old, but his mother, Mabel ‘May’ Gertrude Hendley Skevington Halliwell (b.1887) lived at Rosedene, Rifeway in Felpham after the war until 1972. This is also the address where it is believed Peter’s Sister Barbara (married name Wilsher) may have lived for some time. Barbara had a daughter, Jill Diane Wilsher. It has been suggested that Jill Diane’s married name may be De Boer, and that she also was, or still is, a resident of Felpham.

The graveyard of St Mary’s Church here in Felpham has no recorded monuments with any of the above-mentioned family names, and the church’s registers of births, marriages and deaths are currently not accessible in Chichester record office due to Covid restrictions.

WHO PUT THE CHOCOLATE INTO EASTER EGGS?

Easter without chocolate eggs would be like Christmas without presents. Simply unthinkable!

And yet the tradition of giving chocolate at Easter is relatively recent, dating back 120 years or so to the late nineteenth century.

Easter is a Christian festival that commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Occurring in Spring, which is regarded as a time of renewal and birth by many faiths and cultures, the egg has been used as a symbol of birth and fertility since well before Christianity.

Originally painted bright colours to celebrate the sunlight of spring, decorating and colouring eggs became popular during the Middle Ages, when they were dyed red to symbolise the blood of Christ.

Forbidden as a food during Lent, eggs were hard-boiled, decorated and then given to children at Easter as good luck symbols.

In the eighteenth century, pasteboard or papier mache eggs with small gifts inside became popular and by the nineteenth century these had evolved into cardboard eggs covered in silk, lace or velvet and fastened with ribbon. Faberge produced its first egg in 1883, and elaborate eggs made from silver and gold, ivory and porcelain - some inlaid with jewels - followed.

The first chocolate eggs were made in France and Germany in the early nineteenth century, not long after the first eating chocolate was invented (prior to this chocolate was enjoyed as a drink). But the chocolate couldn’t be moulded and early eggs were solid.

Chocolate eggs didn’t truly gain in popularity until Cadbury entered the market in 1875.

Their early eggs were made from dark chocolate with a plain, smooth surface. Filled with dragees (small, hard sweets), they were decorated with chocolate piping and marzipan flowers. The range gradually increased until in 1893 Cadbury was producing 19 different lines, but it wasn’t until 1905 when the company introduced Cadbury Dairy Milk that the sales of Easter eggs really received a boost.

All-chocolate eggs did not immediately replace the novelty eggs of the Victorian era, however, and Cadbury continued to produce a fancy cardboard egg filled with chocolates until the early 1930s.

The first crème eggs appeared in 1923 as a forerunner to the Cadbury Creme Egg, launched in 1971. An instant hit, it has now become Cadbury’s most popular egg, with over 500 million being made every year, though shell eggs still form the largest sector of the Easter egg market.

So, we have Cadbury to thank for our modern day Easter egg, and in particular their invention of Dairy Milk. Happy Easter everyone!

LET’S GROW TOGETHER TO END POLIO NOW Many of you will have seen the wonderful outburst of purple crocuses in various parks, gardens and schools around our area alongside signs ‘Let’s grow together to End Polio Now’. Did you wonder what was behind those signs?

In 1985 the Rotary Movement spearheaded the campaign to rid the world of Polio at a time when there were over 1,000 polio cases a day in 125 countries, paralysing and even killing children. Today, the number of cases is down by 99.9%, as a result of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative launched in 1988 being a partnership including Rotary, World Health Organization, UNICEF and, more recently, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Through the efforts of Rotary and our partners, nearly 19 million people who would otherwise have been paralysed are walking and more than 1.5 million people are alive who would otherwise have died.

There are only a handful of cases left in the world, but continued campaigning, health worker training and vaccination programmes are essential to stop this preventable disease returning and ensuring the world is certified polio-free. Over 400 million children in more than 50 countries still have to receive their Polio vaccinations.

IT’S GOOD TO LET GO SARAH DAVEY EXPLORES THE ART OF DE-CLUTTERING Live with less If you can’t lay your hands-on items quickly because they’re buried under piles of junk; if you’re constantly ‘stuff-shifting’ - moving things from one pile to a new ‘temporary’ pile; if you find yourself thinking, “I can’t throw this away, it might come in useful one day,” you’re probably a clutter victim.

One of the side-effects of the events of 2020 was that many of us had more time and less money. We embraced a simpler, slower, less covetous lifestyle and many of us feel we’d like to keep something of that as we move towards a post-pandemic world.

There was a collective realisation that possessions are less important than the people we missed.

A decade ago, Californian blogger Dave Bruno set himself the year-long experimental task of reducing his belongings to just 100 items. When his experiment concluded he found he wanted to keep living by his new rules, preferring simplicity to consumerism. His book is worth seeking out.

Since then, a whole movement has developed around the aim of a simpler, more minimalistic lifestyle. There are some great blogs and podcasts available: The Practical Minimalists, and The Minimalists are two worth listening to. Listen to them for inspiration while you declutter. I’m not recommending a sparse monastic lifestyle, but most of us put far too much time, effort, and money into acquiring, keeping, and storing possessions. Sometimes it’s good to let go.

If you’re ready to de-clutter, then we have a few simple tips. If you feel you need help, there are experts in de-cluttering who will guide you through the process of letting go.

De-cluttering Tips Deal with one room at a time and the task will seem less daunting. Stick with that room until it’s finished.

Choose a nice day Take the room contents outside. Psychologically it’s easier to sort and let go if you’re one step removed. It’s also less likely that the clutter will make it back inside.

Sort everything into three piles Label them dump, donate, and keep. Be realistic: if the item in question hasn’t been used for over a year it is unlikely you will ever use it.

Deal with the dump and donate piles Do this before anything comes back into the house. It’s much harder to mess up your good work if the stuff is physically gone.

Sort and label the remaining items in clearly labelled boxes. Make sure there is one temporary box to house items which really belong in another room. As each room is sorted those items can be replaced, and other misplaced items can be housed there while the de-cluttering process continues.

Replace everything that remains, the maxim ‘A place for everything and everything in its place’ is a good one. House small items in clear plastic boxes and store them in cupboards or wardrobes.

Now you’re done instigate a one thing in: one thing out rule. It will make you think twice about acquiring something if you know something else has to go.

Finally, once a week, take two bags and go through your home. One bag is for rubbish, the other for items in the wrong place. When you’ve finished throw the rubbish away and replace the misplaced items.

Follow these small steps and you too can de-clutter your life.

ALL THAT JAZZ International Jazz Day – 30 April

BY TRACEY ANDERSON International Jazz Day brings together schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz.

Jazz began in the early twentieth century in New Orleans, in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The port of New Orleans meant the area was a melting pot of different nationalities and their musical influences: Spanish folk music, French military band music, Ragtime, European ballroom dance music, and Blues music all had an impact on the birth of Jazz.

Jazz wasn’t written down in the same way as classical music; the styles and tunes evolved as they were passed on by ear. Black musicians in particular, were for the most part not classically trained, and began to express themselves through jazz. These musically agile instrumentalists and singers improvised around a main melody, often the popular folk and blues tunes of the era, creating a rich and exciting new blend of sound.

Although the ‘Jazz Age’ was in the 1920s, jazz never went away, it evolved through various incarnations. Talented soloists like Louis Armstrong pushed jazz in the direction of virtuosic improvisers, weaving their music around each other. Swing was a smoother, more easy-listening sound, popularised by the pianist and composer Duke Ellington. This was followed in the 40s and 50s by the Latin influences of Dizzy Gillespie, who collaborated with other musicians to bring jazz into the mainstream. Charlie Parker pioneered modern jazz (be-bop) which challenged many listeners with its complex experimentations in rhythm and harmony. Miles Davis on the other hand developed a more gentle, understated style. Free jazz ignored all the previous rules and constraints on harmony and structure which many people disliked.

During the past 50 years jazz evolution has accelerated through jazz fusion – which fuses jazz solos with other musical styles – and acid jazz, which draws on soul, funk, disco and hip-hop. Well known pioneering acid jazz groups include Jamiroquai, and The Brand-New Heavies.

TOM HANCOCK EXPLORES THE ORIGIN OF APRIL FOOL’S DAY Like many traditions April probably has a number of historical roots.

There was certainly a Roman festival called Hilaria which took place around the time of the spring equinox. There was also a Medieval ‘Feast of Fools’ although that took place at the beginning of the year. Throughout history there seems to be a tradition of transgressing boundaries during such celebrations: whether male and female, low class and high class, religious piety and impiety, people have enjoyed straddling society’s boundaries.

The most popular theory about the ‘modern’ April Fool’s Day is that it began to take shape in late 16th century France. At that time, there was a switch to the Gregorian Calendar under Charles IX. Prior to this there had been a New Year’s week (March 25th-April 1st), and under the Gregorian system, New Year’s Day fell on January 1st.

As with any change (shhh no-one mention Brexit) there was some resistance, and many people stubbornly refused to accept the new system, continuing to celebrate New Year on April 1st.

These people were ridiculed and labelled ‘fools’ by the general population and were often the butt of jokes and pranks. They were known as poisson d’avril, or April fish, possibly because a naïve young fish is easily caught.

Over the years the custom of prank-playing spread to the general population and eventually to Britain, where schoolboy pranks are still the order of the day, so watch out!

But the information we share may end up being available to a far wider group than our immediate social circle, and with hundreds of millions of users online, unfortunately some of these people may have sinister agendas.

By sharing information about our lives, we offer potential criminals the opportunity to gather useful information about us. Even information which seems harmless may be a useful to criminals looking to perpetrate a scam.

Remember these five tips: 1. Friendships - When accepting friend requests be cautious.

Do you know whether their profile is real, or could it be fake?

2. Manage your privacy settings - Only share information with people in your network. Check the settings regularly in case there are any changes.

3. Never divulge personal information - Be suspicious of anyone who asks you for your information that may be used to identify you, such as a social security number.

4. Change your passwords frequently - Choose a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols.

It’s best to use different passwords for each account.

5. Close old accounts - Don’t risk leaving personal data in an old account. Close accounts that you don’t use and delete as much personal information from them as possible.
