Felpham in Focus

WELCOME Hello everyone, I hope the sunshine returns as the July and August holiday season arrives. We certainly deserve some good weather after the year we have all had! I know some of you may be disappointed that you can’t travel abroad this summer but let this be the ‘Sussex summer holiday’ you never had, where we make the most of our fabulous surroundings and celebrate the glorious county we live in. From coast to countryside, we have an abundance of nature and wildlife on our doorsteps as well as incredible places to eat, drink and be entertained. If we can make the most of our towns and villages and support our neighbouring businesses at the same time this will give our local economy a real boost. I would also like to encourage you to take part in one litter pick this summer. Coast or countryside – it makes a massive difference if we pick up the rubbish. Last month the local V2 Radio team headed to Felpham to encourage us all to have a good tidy up, and, despite the gloomy skies and intermittent showers, over 100 people kindly offered their time to help. It was great to see so many people taking part – so let’s follow the V2 lead in August and July and become Wombles! Thank you to Mary Hite for the lovely front cover. Happy Holidays and see you in September, Very best wishes, Kate office@infocusmagazines.co.uk

FINDING A FOCUS

BY KATE STEWART

In 2008 In Focus Magazines former owner and Felpham resident, Sarah Waters, had four children and wanted to continue her job as a nurse part-time but had to come up with a different plan. The patients’ loss was our readers’ and small businesses’ gain because she decided to set up this local community and business magazine – which went from strength to strength and is the one you read today! So how did it all happen? Sarah says: “We moved here in 2002 with four children under 7. We were new to the area and did not know anyone at first. By 2008 my youngest had started school and I was looking for work that would fit in with my family life. Before having our children, I had been a nurse but the only nursing work available involved shift work. My husband often worked away during the week and we wanted to spend the weekends as a family – not just a constant childcare handover! When we moved here, I realised that it would have been so useful to have a directory I could use to look up local tradespeople, businesses, groups and events … so In Focus Magazines was born!” “After many hours visiting local businesses to gauge interest and a crash course in publishing, the first edition of Felpham in Focus was produced in November 2008 with 24 pages and 4,500 copies. As well as marketing, editing and producing the magazine I also did all the delivering for the first few issues – helped by my husband and the children. I got to know Felpham very well during those months! “Fortunately, the magazine was extremely well received right from the start and within days of the first delivery I had several new clients wanting to be part of the next issue. Many of those early advertisers are still with the magazine to this day. “One of the best memories I have is the reaction I got when out delivering; residents would see me coming down the path and almost snatch the magazine out of my hand because they were so pleased to receive it! “The worst day was when the magazines arrived on a pallet from the printer and I knew I had to get out and deliver 4,500 copies. As soon as I could afford it I employed deliverers to help. “The positive feedback from residents and businesses alike was incredible. It did make me feel proud when I got messages from local tradespeople saying they had obtained thousands of pounds of work from their advert, or from local residents saying the magazine was a lifeline they looked forward to reading every month. “The magazine went from strength to strength and I decided to increase to more magazines largely because my advertisers were asking me to include different local areas that they wanted to target for their marketing. This again, was another proud moment. “For anyone thinking of setting up their own small business I would say do your research, accept any help offered and if you can see it is a viable idea that works for you then be brave and go for it. I do feel I was extremely fortunate that I was in the right place at the right time for these magazines. I am incredibly grateful for the life this job has enabled us to live as part of the wonderful community in such a beautiful area. “After twelve years of running In Focus Magazines my children are now all grown up and my husband has just retired so it was the right time for me to hand over to Kate. With one child living in London, one about to move to Edinburgh and two at university in Liverpool and Manchester respectively, it is lovely to know we now have the time to visit them as restrictions allow. We are looking forward to lots more travelling over the coming years.”

LOCAL HISTORY BY SYLVIA ENDACOTT Images of many of our historical buildings can be seen today as early postcards of buildings were introduced. In 1868 William Collis came to Bognor on a painting holiday and stayed with his family at East View in the High Street. Where is East View? It is situated immediately opposite the entrance to Sudley gardens and next to the Tax Office – it is the building that juts into the road as you enter the town. William died in 1925 at the age of 98, but not before he completed a considerable number of sketches. One such album contained many sketches of Bognor and also some of the surrounding villages, which in the 1880’s would have seemed to be some distance from Bognor, Felpham being dominant. He shows us a very interesting snapshot of the area, with a lack of buildings, views across to the beach from the High Street and so on. He also visited Yapton and sketched the church, which dates from the 11th century and the population was only 122 in 1676 to over 3,500 people today. Records show that there was a church in the village in 1086. I found an interesting newspaper article from 1909 about a fire in the belfry area. When the fire was located, a telegram was sent to the Arundel police station and within 15 minutes an engine was sent, which arrived at 7.30 p.m. The fire was extinguished before too much damaged occurred.

CURIOSITY CORNER

BY KIM LESLIE

A series of little titbits, a bit of nostalgia, some local history and trivia This is Summerley Corner and its parade of shops possibly just before the Second World War of 1939-45. All the shops, dating from the 1930s to cater for the local building boom and especially on the neighbouring Summerley Estate, were demolished between 2003 and 2004. The site is now occupied by the Summerley Point apartments and the more modern convenience Central store and post office. The postcard is unused and is therefore without a tell-tale postmark to help us in dating. I would hazard a guess that it was sometime shortly before the war in 1939. The roadside sign on the right points to ‘ARP Warden’ pointing in the direction of an Air Raid Precautions’ post. The Air Raid Wardens’ Service was created in early 1937, showing the government’s readiness for war some two and a half years before the outbreak of hostilities. The only car in sight might also give a clue. It’s a 1938 Vauxhall 14. Even with the threat of war it was clearly the intention of the London postcard company to suggest a relatively peaceful corner of Felpham with a nod to even earlier times with the artfully placed Hovis handcart in the foreground. When I first came to Summerley in the early 1980s these shops were quite varied. If I remember correctly there was a greengrocer, a florist, a butcher, a hairdresser, a restaurant and Barleys hardware store (still in Middleton today). Maybe there were others? There were at least two planning applications for the site at the beginning of this present century. The first was for ten town houses with the addition of a community store. The service road was to be retained to give access from each house by entrances/exits onto Limmer Lane and Summerley Lane. With its gentle curve this layout might have offered a slightly better view of traffic around the corner than is the case today. This scheme was then subsequently abandoned in favour of the present apartment block with no provision for any form of service road creating the present blind and somewhat hazardous junction. The destruction of this service road caused considerable controversy at the time. Originally it was built privately alongside the shops but evidence shows that the road had never been closed to the public with the claim that the public had acquired rights over the road. Despite objections, Arun District Council permitted this revised scheme and the destruction of the road with its awkward consequence for us all today as we approach the entrance to Summerley Estate from Limmer Lane. Take care!

OUR AMAZING VOLUNTEERS AND THE WORK THEY DO BY ROY NEWHAM, RSPB VISITOR EXPERIENCE OFFICER

Pagham Harbour and Medmerry nature reserves cover an area over 1500 acres between them. Conserving, managing and protecting these sites takes a lot of time and money. Like many charity organisations we rely heavily on the generosity of our supporters, without whom we would not survive as an organisation. However, even with financial support we would not be able to complete a fraction of the work we do without our dedicated and committed volunteers. Our volunteers come from all walks of life, different backgrounds and range in age from their teens to nonagenarians. The work they do is equally varied. Obviously, we have some that work with the wardens on conservation work and physically managing the reserve. This green gym involves anything from reed cutting and erecting fencing to clearing paths RSPB work party and general maintenance and repairs. Surveyors monitor the numbers of wildlife. This vital information helps to us to see trends and understand which work we carry out is most effective is supporting our flora and fauna. The ‘welcome team’ are the heart of the Visitor Centre, providing information of what to see and where to walk, whilst also serving teas, coffees and tempting everyone with delicious local ice cream. Our nest cameras are set up and serviced by our more technical minded volunteers and we even have volunteers that help us with admin support. Meanwhile we have volunteers involved with our education team delivering lessons to schools and colleges, while still others lead events from pond dipping and guided walks wildlife painting and photography. In fact, volunteers are involved in virtually every aspect of our work. Some volunteer for a few hours, once a month, some fortnightly, others a couple of time a week. Some during the week, others at weekends. However, the one thing they do have in common is their unerring enthusiasm – thank you to all our volunteers, for everything you do! Right now, we are seeing the results of the work done by volunteers who spent some time in the winter helping the wardens prepare the shingle islands for our breeding shorebirds. Terns like to nest is small shingle scrapes on the ground, which make them extremely vulnerable to disturbance. The little tern – the UK’s smallest tern – suffered dramatic declines along the south coast during the late 1970’s to 1990’s, disappearing Broad bodied chaser completely from Pagham Harbour. Since then, with careful

However, this year has seen numbers double, with 41 pairs nesting, something not witnessed since the early 1980’s. Along with this, record numbers of sandwich tern and black-headed gulls, which are an amber listed bird of concern, all vie for nesting space on the islands. Very soon the whole colony will start making its way south to spend the winter Seven spot ladybird months in Africa. Heading into August many of our summer migrants will already have begun their long transcontinental journeys. Swifts, spotted flycatchers, cuckoos, willow warblers and turtle doves are among the first to depart. Migrant waders, such as greenshank and curlew sandpipers, will also be starting to move, often stopping off to feed up as they pass through our reserves. With the breeding season winding down, many birds will hide away, and it may seem like they have all disappeared. However, having worn out their breeding finery, they will have found a discreet place to moult and grow fresh feathers. Now butterflies, dragonflies and all manner of insects take centre stage. Wandering along any of our many footpaths will reveal 7-spot ladybirds, marmalade hoverflies and emerald coloured thick-kneed beetles to name just a couple, but don’t take my word for it, get there and enjoy our beautiful reserves for yourselves. SUSSEX WILDLIFE TRUST BY MARIA WILDMAN As a lover of the countryside and a keen walker, I became a member of the Sussex Wildlife Trust, which opened a new world to me. I became involved as a volunteer and learnt about coppice work, plant and butterfly monitoring, as well as bat detecting and badger watching and the many ways we can help nature. I realise that I am fortunate to be able to find the time to be a volunteer but just to be a member helps to look after the wildlife of Sussex. During the year, the Sussex Wildlife Trust organise a varied diary of events, including walks, meetings and wildlife courses throughout the county. However, due to the current situation, these have been put on hold. WALKING WITH WILDLIFE BY SIMON BAKER IRONS Pagham Harbour is one of the few remaining undeveloped areas on the Sussex Coast and an extremely important site of special scientific interest. Being one of the best places for wildlife in the UK, it covers an area of 1550 acres and is made up of saltmarsh, mudflats, lagoons, reedbeds and shingle beaches. The varying habitats of the reserve attract some rare birds either visiting during migration, breeding or residing in the harbour. Regular In Focus magazine readers will no doubt have read the RSPB column which provides some great information on the birds to spot in the harbour depending on time of year. The harbour is inter-linked with many public and permissive footpaths, that not only take in the diverse wildlife but also the historical heritage, such as medieval forts and the Selsey Tram, along with some stunning harbour views. The harbour cannot be totally walked around as the opening to the sea is about 50m wide with strong flowing water when the reserve both fills up and empties with the tides. The best way to take in the reserve’s highlights is to follow the three RSPB suggested trails, that can be walked individually, linked together or extended further afield when following the connecting footpaths. A good place to park and start the walks is at the RSPB Visitor centre just south of Sidlesham, open most days the centre can provide a wealth of information about the area and its wildlife. Getting lost around the harbour is not generally a problem as most routes keep to the water’s edge, however it is worth considering the tide, because during high tides some of the paths may not be accessible. The Discovery Trail – Starting from the visitor centre this circular trail is 1.75 miles long and follows the disused Selsey Tramway along the edge of the saltmarsh. Information boards along the route explain the history of the reserve including the tramway, Sidlesham Mill and the reclamation to the sea when the closed harbour wall was breached. The Church Norton Trail – Parking at Church Norton this half-mile walk follows the western edge of the reserve down to the shingle spit at the sea. Tern island can be seen from this trail and is a home to the UKs rarest seabird the Little Tern. Just off the trail at Church Norton is ‘the mound’, a medieval fort next to the 13th Century St Wilfred’s chapel. For a longer walk this trail can be reached from the visitor centre. The North Wall Trail – From the visitor centre it is about a 4-mile round walk using some of the public footpaths, however starting out from Pagham side this trail is just over half a mile. It is popular with birdwatchers as it overlooks the mudflats one side and many reedbeds on the other. This trail is ideal for a peaceful stroll with magnificent views and beautiful sunsets across the harbour. Enjoy the summer and please do visit my blog at piertopiertrekking.com

STRANGER THAN ... A JAMMY KOALA?*

BY FELPHAM RESIDENT JOHN D. SEARLE

From time to time, I’ve celebrated my birthday by taking my wife, Joan, to the cinema. I remember one year, in particular, when we went to the local Odeon in Guildford where you could park free, on a rough piece of ground no distance from the cinema. I admit to a slight qualm as we passed an ominous notice, “parkin at yer orne Risk”. However, returning after the show, we were relieved to find the car where we’d left it, complete with its four wheels, windscreen wipers, wing mirrors and aerial (very vulnerable), apparently all intact. But Joan, looking more carefully, let out a little cry of dismay, “John, look, our AA badge has gone!”. Sure enough, the bright yellow badge with its AA in bold black, had been levered off, leaving its backplate fixed to the grille. “I’ll never park here again,” I shouted angrily. Nevertheless, on my birthday a year later, there was another film we both wanted to see, but only showing at the same cinema. Joan was adamant, “If we go there again, we must use the proper car park.” But I, with typical masculine disregard for feminine good advice, replied, “Let’s risk it. It looks like rain, we don’t want a long walk, and don’t forget, I didn’t replace my AA badge, so it can’t be nicked again.” With that reassurance, we set off to enjoy the film. Later that evening, on returning to the car, we checked its wheels, wipers, mirrors, aerial (very vulnerable) - all were intact. But then Joan asked an odd question, “You definitely said earlier that you hadn’t got a new AA badge, didn’t you?” “Yes, why?” I said, puzzled. “Well use your eyes, John Searle,” she said, exasperated. To my amazement, there, fixed to the original backplate still on the grille, an AA badge had mysteriously appeared, identical to the one stolen the year before! I could not believe my eyes, and muttered something like, “That really is stranger than, err …” “Fiction?’’ Joan suggested. “Well, something like that, but how do you explain it?” On the way home we tried to think of possible explanations. Only two came to mind. Perhaps, an observant AA patrolperson, canvassing the car park for new members (as they did), noticed my badge-less backplate, and happened to have a spare badge in his pocket, he’d fixed it on, but failed to leave a note identifying himself as my benefactor. The other possibility involved an existential question of morality. Did the culprit, repenting the theft, return time and again in the hope of making restoration? Eventually, by lucky coincidence or divine guidance (depending on what you believe), the penitent petty thief, although unaware that it was my birthday, was there on the right day, at the right time, to give me a surprise present – my AA Members badge! Strange? Yes, but can you think of a better explanation? *FOCUS, April 2021.

ASSET PROTECTION TRUSTS “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority have access to everything if one of us needs to go into a care home?” Mirror Wills leaving everything to the surviving spouse on your death for most families is the natural assumption of the right thing to do. HOWEVER, this means there is no asset protection in having this arrangement and all the matrimonial assets are exposed to being taken in care fees if sadly your health deteriorates and you end up needing full time care. For a variety of reasons I DO NOT recommend giving your house to your children or putting it into Trust in your lifetime. Therefore, you will need to ask yourself, is it a good idea to leave your half share of your home to your surviving spouse/partner on death? Why not leave your half share for their USE but not actually give it to them? Helen Gagan Solicitor Property Trust Wills can be drafted to be as flexible as you wish but the most straight forward arrangement is that on your death, if you die first, you leave your half share of your home in a family Trust arrangement for the benefit of by way of example your children, but state they are not to receive it during the lifetime of your surviving spouse. Your half share of the property would then NOT be included in any future means test calculation for care fees. Free initial consultations are available. If you have a Will already in place that you would like reviewed in line with your present situation or simply wish to obtain some more detailed information on Asset Protection Trusts, please feel free to email or call the office for an appointment. BUILDING A COMPUTER BY GEORGE POWELL (AGE 14) You may not be able to go abroad this summer so why not use the time to build your own computer. I built my pc instead of buying it pre-built because of the freedom it gives you. You get to choose every part to form the perfect computer for your needs and budget. Secondly, the costs are about 10-20 per cent cheaper than a pre-built computer and finally, the overall satisfaction and accomplishment of building it yourself is immense. To build the PC you first need to educate yourself on all the different components listed below to find the parts you need. A great tool for this is YouTube. Then you can also estimate the cost bearing in mind you will also need accessories like a keyboard, mouse and monitor. Components include : CPU, GPU/graphics card, PSU/power supply, Case, RAM, Motherboard, Storage, SSD OR HDD. It may take a couple weeks to understand all you need to know. (Please note: if this becomes a hardship for you then you probably won’t want to build a computer!). Now you’re all set for building, you can buy your components and off you go. No tools are needed just a screwdriver of varying sizes. The learning period including buying components should take about two weeks, with the build itself taking anything from 30 minutes to 1h 30min for unsure and careful builders. By the way, building a computer isn’t as risky as you think the only parts that can break are the CPU pins but everything else is almost indestructible. A PC is a helpful piece of tech for many reasons. While having the same capabilities as a phone or Ipad it can also run many more applications at better resolutions and give more freedom to the user. It is also very helpful when using different workplace apps like Google Classroom, Drive, Microsoft office/teams and Zoom. It goes on and on! It certainly was a great help in lockdown when I had to do all my schoolwork online. Happy building!

CAN YOU HELP? A VOLUNTARY OPPORTUNITY AT FORD OPEN PRISON BY KEN PORTER The Independent Monitoring Board at HMP Ford plays a crucial role in the independent oversight of the life at HMP Ford and we are looking for new and diverse members to join us from the local community. We currently have people who have worked in probation, healthcare and in the private sector on the board, so all are welcome! Members of the IMB at HMP Ford are appointed by the Secretary of State for Justice and have unrestricted access to the prison, monitoring that prisoners are treated in a fair and humane manner. The enthusiastic monitoring board is comprised entirely volunteers from all walks of life who live within 35 miles of the prison. The work is interesting and varied and the members visit the prison around 2-4 times a month. Applicants must be over eighteen, non-judgemental, interested in people and the criminal justice system. Ford is an open prison situated just south of Arundel, spread over 110 acres, housing men in the last three years of their sentence. The emphasis is on preparing them for release and giving them skills to help them rebuild their lives and reduce their chances of reoffending. Chichester College has recently opened a School of Construction on site where the men are encouraged to learn basic maths, literary and computer skills. Board members are able to go anywhere in the prison, and to speak to any prisoner or any prison officer. They produce an annual report for the Minister of Justice. The latest one can be found at https://www.imb.org.uk/reports/2020-annual-reports/ Full training will be given and travelling expenses paid. To find out more visit www.imb.org.uk.

THANK YOU!

I am writing on behalf of the Friends of Downview Primary School to THANK the fabulous Felpham community for their continued support of the school. Whilst collecting for our Summer Raffle I have been so touched by people’s generosity, as without the benevolence of the businesses and individuals around Felpham and the local area, we would not be able to raise extra funds for the pupil’s at Downview Primary School. The Friends of Downview are always thrilled to receive any donation towards our raffles or fayres and each and every donation does truly go towards making a difference for the children and we are extremely grateful. The money raised from events goes towards classroom and playground equipment, educational visits, and other extra classroom items for the children. This is integral in enhancing each and every child’s school experience, especially now after such a difficult year for many. The COVID lockdown and consequent restrictions have had a significant impact, and many of our planned events were regretfully unable to take place. We recognise that it has been incredibly challenging for many businesses too which is why we are even more thankful for the continued support. Although many businesses have supported the school over the years a special mention and thank you to Arun Leisure Centre, Bay Tree Estates, Milestones, May’s Estate Agents, Gaterell’s Butchers, Felpham Pet Supplies, Everything Bathrooms, Carlyles, Pizza Base, The Thatched House, The George, Harbour Park, Mitsuyo House of Flowers, Gravel Lane Garage, The Southdowns, Geoff Naylor Locksmith, Tescos, Flip Out and Fishers Farm Park who have kindly donated this year, amongst many others. On behalf of the children, their parents, and all the Downview Primary School team, thank you once again for your support. Yours sincerely, V. Mills (Member of the Friends of Downview Primary School)

HOROSCOPES FOR JULY AND AUGUST BY LOCAL ASTROLOGER LETICIA PARMER With Saturn, bringer of restrictions and life-lessons and Pluto, the roller-coaster planet both retrograde this summer, you should feel some welcome relief from the intense challenges of this past year. Also Jupiter, planet of luck and opportunities, will be newly positioned to ease things still further. ARIES Yes, you are a fire sign, but this summer you will be more dynamic and charismatic than ever. You’re not turning down any invitations and will be especially good at planning and hosting your own party, with something to entertain all age groups.

LIBRA Friends and family may compete for your attention. You feel duty-bound by family traditions but your social scene is equally compelling. It will take some juggling and a dose of your Libra charm to please all of the people all of the time.

TAURUS You might be torn between staying home and going out. Certainly you’ll feel like nesting, but you will also be keen for the stimulation of chatting and connecting with others, especially your mum. So why not invite them round for a meal.

SCORPIO Having to travel for work reasons is not quite what you had in mind for this summer, but at least you can enjoy a change of scene. As education is highlighted for you now, why not sign up to a course of study or start to teach?

GEMINI Money is on your mind. You’re naturally good at selling yourself, so this might be the month when you win the deal of your dreams. Certainly you will be talking a good game and coming up with money-making ideas. Just don’t gamble. CANCER When you feel vulnerable you hide within your shell, but this month you will be shining your light out fully into the world, and reaping the rewards of letting others truly see YOU and your amazing hidden talents. You are shining brightly. LEO Leo’s natural place is in the spotlight, so this summer you will enjoy putting yourself out there, the star of your own show. Your imagination is fired up too, so you can visualise then perform whichever role you choose, with considerable charisma. VIRGO You are known for your down to earth practicality and strong work ethic. But this summer you can step out of that mould by joining a yoga or meditation class, giving yourself a chance to truly relax and rejuvenate.

SAGITTARIUS Sagittarians are naturally drawn to sport, so you will thoroughly enjoy a summer immersion, either as a player or as a spectator. Competitions that involve other countries and cultures will particularly gain your following now. CAPRICORN You’ll feel the need to keep your team-mate in the dark. This could mean you’ll enjoy a secret liaison or plan a romantic surprise for your sweetheart. Or you might equally feel drawn to investigate your business partner on the quiet. AQUARIUS Remember nobody is perfect but this summer you may expect a partner, whether in business or romance, to be flawless. The trouble is your current meticulous mindset makes you critically magnify any minor flaw or imperfection. PISCES Children and work don’t usually mix, but not so this summer. You will be surprisingly efficient and organised at planning and creating a wonderful party and can inspire the children to help you with making decorations and invitations.

GARDEN VIEW SAVE WATER BY RACHEL LEVERTON In spite of the somewhat soggy spring, water is an increasingly precious resource in the UK. Over the past few decades, rivers, reservoirs, and ground water supplies have become depleted. It’s important to save water where we can. Most of us have enough space for at least one water butt, and there are slimline versions for smaller plots. Connect them to every available downpipe around your house! Fit guttering to sheds and summer houses to allow even more water collection. Keep the butts covered to prevent leaves falling in and deter mosquitos from breeding. Bulk up soil with organic matter, such as compost and leaf mould. This improves free-draining soil particularly, but most soil types will benefit. It prevents clay soil baking hard and damaging roots, and on boggy soil it improves drainage and oxygenation. It’s win-win, whatever soil you garden on. Water during cooler parts of the day. A good soak every few days is better than little and often, because when only the surface is wet most of the water evaporates or drains away. Also, water only at critical stages like germination, or when you’ve just transplanted young plants with immature root systems, or when fruit is setting such as tomatoes or strawberries. Bare soil loses moisture quickly through evaporation so mulch, mulch, mulch. Use straw, grass clippings or leaf mould. Mulching has the added benefit of smothering weeds. A green lawn looks lush, but no-one should be watering a lawn nowadays. Yes it will yellow, but lawns are tough and will green up at the first sign of rain. I retired my sprinkler system years ago. Sprinklers are wasteful and it’s better to implement targeted watering or even a slow drip-irrigation system. Work with your garden rather than against it. My free-draining lime soil favours plants such as lavenders and other silver-leaved species. If you garden on clay you might choose roses or ribes sanguineum and Malus (crab apples). Greenhouses can be a major source of water wastage. Never place pots directly on to staging. Instead use capillary matting or trays to capture run-off and enable plants to access this when needed. The only time you shouldn’t use rainwater is with seedlings. They are vulnerable a variety of fungal infections called which fall under the catchall phrase, ‘damping off disease’. Tap water only is recommended for seedlings. But once they are potted up, you can switch to harvested rainwater. ‘Grey’ water is water from washing up or washing vegetables, or even bathwater. Collecting it can be a good idea providing you take certain precautions. There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube to help you make the most of your own grey water. Use rinsing water only or eco products free from phosphates which are harmful to the microflora in the soil. Bathwater should not be stored for too long and should only be used to water flowers, never edible crops, because of the risk of bacterial growth harmful to humans if ingested. I hope this has inspired you to save water in your garden this summer. Happy gardening.

AN OPEN AND SHUT CASE BY MARK O’KEEFE Could a new garage door increase the kerb appeal of your home? What does your garage door say about your home? Never thought about it? Perhaps you should. As the housing market picks up and people begin to think about upgrading or downsizing the right garage door can significantly increase the kerb appeal and even the price of your house. There are two types of garage door: tilt-up and roll-up. Tilt-up garage doors consist of a single panel of material. The door has to be pulled out and then pivoted up so it can slide along the roof of the garage. Roll-up garage doors, on the other hand, are made of a number of horizontal sections which are hinged together for flexibility. Because it rests on rollers, it can be lifted, and rolled into place along the roof of the garage. Sectional roll-up doors are more expensive as a rule but have certain advantages. Since these doors don’t have to be pulled outwards they are a great option if space on your drive is tight. They also take up less room in the garage since they can be placed higher than a tilt-up door. Both types of doors are usually made from wood or steel. Wood is generally cheaper, and some people prefer the look. However, just like wooden patio furniture, a wooden door is more easily damaged by the weather and may warp, split, or blister. Steel is more expensive. It isn’t prone to warping but does need to be properly treated to prevent rust. Garage doors are also available in aluminium or fibreglass. Both of these materials are less expensive than steel or wood, but neither is as strong, and they are more prone to damage with normal wear and tear. Remember a garage door will be exposed to everything the weather can throw at it day in and day out, so it will need regular maintenance. Doors should be washed down regularly. Wooden garage doors need to be repainted in alternate years to ensure that the wood stays protected. Steel doors can be painted and treated to an occasional shine with car wax. All moving parts should be lubricated with motor oil whenever the door starts to feel stuck. Consider … • Remote control – For ease, convenience and even safety you can’t beat a remote-controlled door. • Override – Make sure the remote can be manually overridden in case of power failure. You don’t want the kids, or the dog trapped in there, or even yourself. • Security – Automatic door locking mechanisms are useful. • Safety – This one is my top priority. To ensure that an electric garage door is deemed safe for use, it will have to incorporate at least one sufficient safety feature into its mechanism which will prevent personal injury. Every year children and adults are injured in accidents which involve older style garage doors. New doors should have an automatic reverse function. That way, if the door encounters any object as it is closing it will immediately stop and back-up.

A GOOD READ

BY KATE STEWART

THIS MONTH we are featuring three local authors who have had the courage to write and be published. Here we find out more about their journeys and their inspiration. Kate Bulpitt grew up in Bognor before heading to university in London where she studied writing and publishing. She said: “After graduating, I spent many years working in film, both in London, and then for nearly a decade, in New York.  I mainly worked in casting and talent agencies, life was just like Call My Agent – the Netflix series! Films I worked on included working with directors such as Robert De Niro on The Good Shepherd, Paul Greengrass on United 93, a host of romantic comedies and Spiceworld, the Spice Girls movie! While I lived in New York, I also dabbled in stand-up comedy.  “I then moved back to the UK, settling in Brighton, and got my nose down with writing Purple People.  I was a student on one of the first Curtis Brown Creative courses, where I developed the novel, and in 2016, our group published a short story anthology called The Book of Unwritten Rules. My Mum still lives in Bognor, so we’re both Sussex gals!” To order a paperback or kindle edition of Purple People visit www.amazon.co.uk/PurplePeople-Kate-Bulpitt/dp/1912618729 Sharon Whittington is a 52 year-old childminder who lives in Bognor Regis. She has recently written and self-published a children’s adventure story called Stirling Harrington and the Magical Brooch.  The price of the book is £10.00 and the proceeds go to Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. Sharon said: “A number of the school children I look after have drawn pictures which are included inside the book. The story is about nine-year-old Stirling, his seven-year-old sister Penny and their parents during the family’s first foreign holiday in France. “One evening, shortly before the family holiday, Stirling unearths an ancient brooch whilst digging in his back garden. He doesn’t learn of the brooch’s mystical powers until he and new friends find themselves in danger and fearing for their lives. The book does have an educational aspect. The children travel through France in modes of transport invented by the French, visit French monuments and become embroiled in French historical events, encountering French mythical creatures along the way,” she added. Will Stirling and Penny be reunited with their parents or are they destined to continue with further adventure? The book is for 8-10 year olds and is published by The Better Book Company at £10 and is available from Sharon on 077751 62779 or simonwhittington1@gmail.com.

THE WRITE STUFF BY JEANNE DAVIES Felpham resident Jeanne Davies has launched an anthology of short stories called Drawn by The Sea. Here she talks about her writing journey and how we can all follow in her footsteps. Reading has always been a huge part of my life and, in the strange times we live in, a good book can distract you from your worries and transport you to another world. Short stories will fit into anyone’s lifestyle, no matter how busy life gets. Covid has given opportunities for people to write … they say there is a book in everyone. I started writing when I was about ten when I had a poem published in the Chichester Observer, which nobody believed I’d written. Raising five children and running a manufacturing business with my husband made it difficult to fit writing in but I soon discovered that our children loved the unscripted bedtime stories I told, especially if they were on the scary side! As the family grew I came back to writing and I began entering my ramblings into grown-up short story competitions. One day a publisher took one for their anthology and it was a great thrill to see it in print and in a book shop. This encouraged me to write more, and before I knew it I was an Amazon Author with a book case of anthologies containing one or two of my short stories, flash fiction or poetry. Having published many of my stories, Bridge House offered to make a single author anthology and Drawn by the Sea was published in July 2020. Most of the stories in this collection are written while walking for miles in our Sussex countryside with my dogs. The beauty of creation and all forms of nature always stirs something in our psyche, whether we acknowledge it or not. To be surrounded by fields, trees and open sky in a magnificent green space or wandering along the seashore with the serenity and chaos of the ocean can inspire and give us peace. This also applies in the pouring rain with smelly wet dogs! Sometimes a competition theme makes writing a challenge but it’s so exciting when the story forms in your head and the characters come to life. I enjoy living briefly in their worlds, often waking in the middle of the night to scribble something down; but often the story writes itself. Many of us put off writing, waiting forever for the perfect time but there will always be other things in the way. Covid has made us realise how fragile life is so give writing a go whether you are ten or a hundred and write about something you’re passionate about. Pass your thoughts into the future and don’t be put off when a story is refused. Sadly, Covid prevented a proper book launch for Drawn by the Sea but if you would like to buy a copy it is available in paperback on Amazon for £7 (free for Kindle users), from Goodreads or it can be ordered from any local book shop.

CARE AT HOME BY PETER HOLLEYFIELD Following on from Tony Hancock’s article in the last issue about ‘Choosing a care home’ I felt that it is worth exploring this often not talked about subject a bit more. Under the Care Act 2014, everyone is entitled to an assessment of their social care needs. Do not be afraid to talk to a social worker, there is no longer a stigma about asking for help, social workers will not automatically put you into a care home! It is their job to help you to maintain your independence in your own home for as long as possible. This is with the help of Technical Aids such as Care Line, Agency carers, or personal assistants (PA’s), helping you to wash, dress and cook, Apetito home-delivered hot meals and charitable organisations providing low level support. How can I afford all this, I hear you ask? If you have savings and investments of less than £23,250 this care support maybe part funded by WSCC but depending on your income you may have to pay a contribution towards any care provided – unfortunately, social care is not free at the point of service like health care. However, if you are finding that you need people to come in and help provide care for you, then you could be eligible to claim Attendance Allowance. If members of your family, or a friend, provide unpaid care, then they could also be eligible to obtain Carer’s Allowance, and be entitled to a Carer’s assessment in their own right. If you have savings and investments of more than £23,250, then following a Care Act assessment, Adults’ Services can, for a fee, act as a broker to arrange for a care agency to support you with care staff that you pay for privately. All of this information is available from the West Sussex Care Guide, accessed on the WSCC website https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/media/14651/west_sussex_care_guide.pdf or maybe found in GP surgeries or similar. Another excellent source of information is AgeUK, https://www.ageuk.org.uk/ or call their free, confidential advice line on 0800 678 1602. Next month I will write a follow-up article about care homes and the point where everyone agrees that it is no longer safe to stay in your own home and where the risks sadly outweigh the attempt to stay independent. This will cover funding, WSCC funding and your contribution, who makes a decision if you are unable to make your own decisions, Lasting Power of Attorney, The Mental Capacity Act 2005, care home or nursing home, funded nursing care and ‘what about my home?’ If you, or a loved one, are struggling with things at home, not able to get out and about as you used to and feeling that you are a burden on your family, then talk to West Sussex Adults’ Services on 01243 642121.

A TRUE PROFESSIONAL BY KATE STEWART

Professional sports players spend hours training and work hard every day to improving their skills and fitness and make sure they are at the top of their game. It’s no surprise therefore, that professional cricketers don’t prioritise sharing their expertise with young and developing players. This is not true of Mahesh Rawat. Mahesh is the current overseas professional playing for Middleton Cricket Club First XI. A former India A and Rajahstan Royals batsman and wicket keeper, Mahesh is training the junior boys and girls at Middleton Cricket Club on a Friday evening and, when invited, he is visiting local schools to inspire and coach the children. At Westbourne House School in Chichester, Mahesh has been coaching Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7 boys and girls during their games lessons. Josh, Year 6 pupil and Middleton player, said: “He is very positive and his knowledge is amazing. It was great to have a legend at our school.” Year 7 pupil and Middleton player, Emily added: “It was great the way he talked to us as equals and explained simple ways we can improve our game. It was also amazing to hear how his batting average was 152 and he scored over 1000 runs in a cricket season – that is something to aim for!” Westbourne House School Headmaster, Martin Barker, said: “It has been a pleasure to welcome Mahesh to our school. The children have loved him taking part in their games lessons and he has been a true cricket inspiration across the school.” Mahesh said: “It is my privilege to work in an outstanding atmosphere with such a talented bunch of players. I am really thankful to Westbourne House School and Middleton CC for giving me this opportunity and I hope others will follow. We must inspire the next generation of cricket players so more and more young people join the cricket family.” For further information visit www.middletonsportsclub.co.uk/cricket/ and www.westbournehouse.org

LISTENING TO CHILDREN READ

All of us know that during the pandemic many children missed much of their regular schooling, and, apart from a small group of children, all teaching was done remotely. One of the things that cannot be done easily over the internet is to hear primary school children read on a one-to-one basis. This has meant that some children are now struggling with their reading. Before the pandemic hit us, both, the members of our club and our friends’ group, were visiting a number of our local primary schools to hear children read. Head teachers have told us that this raised the standard of reading in their schools significantly. At the beginning of the new school year in September we hope that we will be able to help with the reading in our schools again. We would also like to increase the number of schools that we can help in our area. This is where you can help us and all primary aged pupils. All we are asking for is a couple of hours a week at your local school. You can choose which age group you would like to be involved with from Year 1 through to Year 6 when the pupils move to secondary education. We will do all the planning and introduce you to the staff at a school near to you, please think whether you could help us in this small way. We offer fixed fees on everything we do, giving you complete peace of mind knowing we are there whenever you need us, and you will not suddenly get a surprise bill. We deal with a variety of legal issues and can help you with every aspect. This week we were approached by clients who had sadly lost a member of their family. They needed probate. Our first meeting is completely free, so we sat down and took instructions. It was clear our clients needed to obtain the Grant to administer the Estate, but it also appeared a Deed of Variation could help protect their assets for future generations. We therefore discussed how this could help and before we knew it our clients wanted us to get the Grant of Probate put in place, as well as their Lasting Powers of Attorney, Deed of Variation, new Wills, and the Conveyancing on the subsequent property sale.

Access to your own online portal

For ALL of this we offered a fixed fee from day one. Our clients knew they could contact us at any time, and they were happy with our online Conveyancing update system which gave them their own portal they could view at any time of the day or night, 365 days of the year. The state-of-the-art portal showed exactly what we were doing on their behalf and what was happening next. Our clients could not have been happier. We pride ourselves on communication and believe keeping our clients regularly updated helps us to achieve positive feedback and outstanding results.

For all Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorneys and/or Conveyancing please give us a call to see how we can help.

Felpham in Focus Update from the Arun Prevention Team – July/August 2021 You can contact your local team in the following ways: • Call us: on 101 to report a crime or 999 if it’s an emergency • Email us: arun@sussex.pnn.police.uk Did you know? One in five people fall victim to fraud every year Nearly 50 per cent of all adults have been targeted by fraudsters Every year, the British public loses billions of pounds to fraudsters. With scams ranging from the simplest confidence trick to the most sophisticated high-tech online fraud.

Common types of calls: Phishing scams Fraudsters also use phone calls to try and trick people into giving them valuable personal information. This is called ‘phishing’. This can also be done via email where fraudsters perpetrate to be from a legitimate business / agency advising you to ‘click on a link’ within an email which takes you to another website where your details can be taken. They either sell this information or use it themselves to commit fraud such as identity theft. This is a criminal offence. Cold calls Cold calls are unwanted phone calls by companies or people trying to sell you something. Companies are required to get your consent before they can market their goods and services to you by phone or email. If they don’t have it, they shouldn’t be doing it. What you can do On most modern phones you can block certain numbers from calling or texting you. Check your phone’s instruction guide or call your service provider for help. To help prevent nuisance and malicious calls, you can register with the telephone preference service. You could also contact your phone service provider, such as BT or Virgin Media. They should be able to suggest more ways to screen and block incoming calls. Key things to remember: • Never send or give money to anyone you don’t know or trust. • Check people are who they say they are. • Don’t share your personal information. • Make decisions in your own time. • If in doubt phone a relative or a friend. • Trust no-one who cold calls you about your bank account or a problem with your computer. • Under no circumstances would the bank or police: • request a card PIN or security details over the telephone, or • arrange collection of bank cards from a home address If you suspect fraud, please report it to us. The methods fraudsters use can be extremely clever there’s no shame in having been caught out. SAFARI ART BY KATE STEWART Felpham Artist Mary Hite and her husband Ed have been fortunate to visit a number of countries on safari holidays. Mary said: “We’ve travelled to Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, Kenya Tanzania and Nepal. During these trips I have seen and photographed all the animals I have painted, except tigers. We stayed at the Chitwan National Park in Nepal with the hope of seeing tigers but unfortunately they were illusive. Therefore, in order for me to get a reference, we made a journey to London Zoo! Not quite so exciting but very successful. The elephant and her baby crossed the track in front of us with her ears extending. This intimidating display was an attempt to frighten us off! We didn’t stay! Having so much time on my hands during lockdown I have painted a collection on black canvases called “Animal Magic”, but I have also painted other scenes including Arundel in April and Felpham beach scenes”. To see Mary’s and other local artists’ paintings visit the Art Exhibition at the Norfolk Centre, Arundel 29 July- 6 August. www.maryhitepaintings.co.uk

MAKING PICTURES WITH PASTELS BY KATE STEWART As a schoolboy in 1945 in outer London, Felpham-resident John King was offered a place at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, by the school Governors. But as WW2 was just ending and being one of five children, getting a job and bringing money into the family home was the priority which meant working in the art world was sadly not going to happen. On leaving school at 14 John joined the photographic department of the local newspaper and his picture-making was through the lens of a camera. He moved to Felpham in 1963 when Weir Electronics Ltd, a company of which he was a founder member, moved to the South Bersted Industrial estate. Then in 1988 he started his own company, Precision Windings Walking the Dog - is set in Hotham Park. Ltd, and later retired in 2012 on his 80th birthday to give him more time to pursue his passion – making pictures with pastels. Self-taught, John found time to attend art classes provided by Aspire and was tutored by the artist Jason Powers. He also joined the Felpham Art Group, and later became a member of the Pastel Society of America. He also is a member of the Pastel Artist of New Zealand and currently has three of the 100 selected artworks now exhibiting at the 2021 ‘Purely Pastel’ Online International exhibition (see above). Well done John!

THE MAGIC OF SUMMER ART TRAIL BY SUSIE OLFORD Artists who work their magic in our villages are really looking forward to seeing you this summer. After more than a year of painting and making, they are eager to open their studio doors to let in light and life. Locally, we have the Regis section of Chichester Art Trail which covers the villages of Yapton, Bilsham, Elmer, Middleton, Felpham and Flansham. (Venue nos. in brackets.) Watch for the Green Arrows. Fiona’s Big Cats at Bilsham (45) will keep their eye on you. Wildlife is her passion, painting in traditional and contemporary styles depending on her subject. Fiona also creates small and large - even life size – animal sculptures for inside and out. (BN18 0JY) Travel a mile west on the A259 where Susie (38) displays oil and acrylic paintings in a spacious barn on Hoe Lane, Flansham, PO22 8NJ. For Susie it is joyful colour; interpretating the sea and landscape near home. In Felpham, village Jacky (35) works in her garden studio in oil on large canvases. Her work is abstract often influenced by her proximity to the seafront and its surroundings. (PO22 7AH) Linda’s studio (42) is in Elmer and she crafts highly coloured organic ceramics which are hand built, moulded and thrown in various clays for home and garden. She calls each vessel ‘a Surprise Me’ as they invariably do using her experimental processes. (PO22 6JH) Within the boundaries of our villages, you will find seven other artists with watercolours, acrylics, oils, inks, pastels, print making, textiles and ceramics – in all eleven venues close to home. Additionally, there are a few artists who will exhibit via the Trail’s on-line portal. Information on how to contact these artists are on the web and in the brochure. We hope you will enjoy the Magic of the Summer of 2021 close to home. Edward Degas said: “Art is not what the Artist sees, but what they make you see.” Please come and see for yourself … . Website: chichesterarttrail.org. Colour brochures available from any Venue. Dates: Sat, Sun 10 & 11, 17 & 18 July 2021, open 1030-1700. Entry is free and all Covid related guidelines in place in July will be operating including QR codes, T&T forms, social distancing, sanitizers, etc.

ST MARY’S FLOWER AND OPEN GARDENS WEEKEND 3-4 JULY 2021

Despite all of the uncertainty of the past few months, St Mary’s Flower Festival and Open Gardens Weekend 2021 will be taking place on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th July, between 10am and 4pm. Sadly, due to circumstances, we only have a few gardens taking part this year but they are all different, some large, some smaller. One has plants for sale; one has art work on display. Felpham Allotments and Gardens Society will have an open day at the St Mary’s Allotment site (by the traffic lights) on Saturday. The Conservation Society will be in Old Rectory Gardens – visit them to find out more about what they do. St Mary’s Church will be full of colour, with wonderful displays by our local flower arrangers. The theme this year is ‘Halcyon Days’. Open 10am to 4pm on Saturday the 3rd July and from 12 noon on Sunday. There will also be a concert by St Mary’s Choir and Guests at the Church at 7pm on Friday evening (2nd July), with a retiring collection for church funds. St Mary’s Centre will be host to the local Art Group, who will have an exhibition and sale of their work on both days. Light refreshments, toilet facilities and stalls, including raffle, will also available here. A free admission programme will be available at Felpham Post Office and other venues around the village and also at St Mary’s Centre during the event. Please note that Covid rules in place at the time will need to be adhered to and due to the current situation, some activities may change or be cancelled. For more details contact Sue Holmes on 01243 864437 or email sjholmes1@yahoo.co.uk.

APPLEY EVER AFTER! A BRIEF HISTORY OF CIDER … AND A CIDER COCKTAIL BY SARAH DAVEY Apple trees have been cultivated since around the 5th century AD and cider, or something similar, seems to have been around for almost as long, although sometimes it was known as apple wine. It was brought to Britain by the Normans in around 1100 AD. Cider was originally a drink for the poor. Ale was made from malted barley and using grain for alcohol could mean going without bread. It was drunk instead of water because water at that time was often not safe to drink. The first settlers in America planted lots of apple trees simply so they could continue to make cider to drink. Originally it was made by crushing apples in a trough, until John Worlidge produced a special apple-mill in 1676. The best English cider is cask-conditioned; dry, fruity and with low carbonation. Normandy cider is sweeter and more effervescent with a complex taste. Both are perfect for consumption, chilled, on a warm summer evening. While a simple cider over ice is hard to beat, a cider sangria can take the drink to another level. Colourful, cold, fresh and fruity, it’s perfect for sharing with friends on a summer evening. Pour a bottle of dry white wine into a large jug – Pinot Grigio is perfect. Add 250ml lemonade, 125ml lime juice, a large handful of mint, and plenty of sliced strawberries, and orange and lime slices. Chill out for at least 15 minutes so the fruit infuses the drink and vice versa. Just before serving, add loads of ice and two bottles of your favourite cider. Enjoy!

Firstly, we want to say thank you. Thank you for your support over the past year for working with us in such uncertain times. Like many, we had to change the way we work very quickly and that has only been possible because you – our patients – have adapted to these changes. We would like to reassure you that we are open. We are providing face-to-face appointments, as well as supporting people over the telephone or online. Face-to-face appointments will be offered when they are clinically indicated, and can be with a range of health care professionals currently working within the practice. Pre-bookable telephone appointments are also available for non-urgent problems. We are asking that if you need our help and support, you still call us first if you are able. We know that some people have struggled to get through to us on the telephone or had a long wait and we thank you for your patience. Talking to you helps us understand what kind of support you need and how urgent it is, and means we can work out the best way for you to receive help. We have seen an increase in calls since the start of the year and we are working to try to meet this demand and support all of our patients. In the last month we received 9920 calls and 941 eConsultations. We know that some people have put off seeking medical support, including to protect the NHS, and we are committed to making sure all of our patients who need our help can receive it. Whilst we recognise that not everyone has access to a computer, smartphone or tablet, we do want to make you aware of: eConsult – you can use this from the front page of our practice website www.flanshampark. co.uk/ . Requesting our help via eConsult is the same as booking an appointment at the practice. There is no need to phone the practice as well and we will deal with your request based on your medical needs. The NHS app (is owned and run by the NHS, it is a simple and secure way to access a range of NHS services, including ordering prescriptions, validating your vaccines.) If you do not have access to these, you can make your request for a repeat prescription in person into the box at the practice or speak to your local pharmacist, and together we will action this as soon as we are able. If you have a question about the Covid-19 vaccine, please visit the information on our website and www.sussexhealthandcare.uk/keepsussexsafe/sussex-covid-19-vaccination-programme/ if you are able in the first instance. These websites have answers to common questions and where you can get help in relation to specific queries. We welcome feedback from our patients so that we can share when things go well and learn when - and how - we can make things better. We welcome your suggestions which can be communicated via letter or email to our Practice Manager, Susannah Devine - susannah.devine@nhs.net We do ask that as we are here for you, please continue to be respectful and kind to our teams both when you are speaking to them and with regards to personal comments online and on social media. We want to enable a culture of mutual respect and have a zero tolerance policy on verbal and physical abuse. No patient, carer, visitor, staff member or volunteer should ever be subjected to abusive or antisocial behaviour or language. Appropriate action will be taken if this does occur. We thank you for the respect and the care you show our team, we hope you experience the same in return. Text BoxThank you for your support. COVID Vaccination Appointments Enquiry Line If you have a query regarding your COVID vaccination appointment, please call the IPC team on 0333 370 4111.
