Dear All, My editorial this month is dedicated to our writer and In Focus ‘Treasure’ Sylvia Endacott who is retiring from In Focus Magazines this month – after 17 incredible years. Every month Sylvia has entertained, surprised and taught us so much about Bognor Regis and our surrounding villages and I cannot thank her enough. She has brought our local history, our buildings and past populations alive, and she has found something interesting in everything and everyone. Sylvia has a rare talent. She asks questions and listens to the answers for longer than 30 seconds! As a journalist I admire that skill immensely. Google and ChatGPT have their place but it’s human questioning that gets to the heart of the matter. Sylvia digs deep into our local roots and unearths extraordinary facts, stories, links and memories which she has generously shared with us in hundreds of different articles. Sylvia, we will miss your wise words, but I hope that from time to time you will send us a “Sylvia Special” to keep us going! A huge thank you from us all. SOUTHDOWNS MUSIC FESTIVAL 2026 BY ROGER NASH 11-13 SEPTEMBER Building on the success of the past few years, the 2026 Southdowns Music Festival in sunny Bognor Regis promises to be even bigger and better with some really top names from the world of folk and acoustic music. The 13th Festival will feature the ever-popular Ukulele Festival staged over three days under marquee and around the town, plus shanty and dance groups will be performing. Fascinating festival markets will be in place along the closed seafront and once again, younger musicians and performers will be featured at the brilliant Rox/Bognorphenia inside stage at the Green Dragon Phil Beer. over Saturday & Sunday, and what is even better, all this is free! There will be a whole array of more free performances in the festival outside venues including the William Hardwicke in the High Street, the RAFA Club in Waterloo Square, Bonito Lounge (London Road), The Lamb (Steyne Street), The Alex (London Road) plus the Green Dragon in The Steyne. The main ticketed evening concerts will be on stage at Venue 24 on Bognor Regis Pier including, on Friday 11 September, the legendary Phil Beer supported by the superb duo who are Megson. Saturday 12th sees the excellent Irish group Roving Crows supported by the delightful Sorrel Nation and on Sunday 13th September the fantastic 3 Daft Monkeys are the headliners with popular local performer, Ed Goodale supporting. There are also two great free concerts at Venue 24 on Sat and Sun afternoons featuring Americana duo Holly Rogers and friend (Saturday 12th) plus on Sunday 13th September, the one and only Jez Lowe. Finally, we are excited to announce that there will be a free 50 drone light display off Bognor Pier on Sat 12 Sept at 8.40pm staged by Skydot Drones. We look forward to seeing you – all welcome!

LOCAL HISTORY BY SYLVIA ENDACOTT When you move into a new town, you must take everything as it comes or start questioning the who, the what and the where. That is what I did, soon after arriving in Bognor Regis to start work. I also went to see ‘old films of Bognor,’ great fun, but it did not really answer the questions. This was in the 1980s when there was no internet or social media to ask questions. It was a lot of going to the library, buying books or asking people what they could remember! I joined the local history society and started to learn about the arrival of the railway, this inevitably led to even more questions - a bit like a spider’s Sylvia. web! With the aid of street directories, we researched everyone who lived in Gainsboro Road, where we lived, from the early 1900s. I urge anyone to look out for something to research whether it’s using the internet, Flashback Bognor, the library or the local history museum in West Street. At school, history was boring, but in local history I found an interest, friends, and contacts worldwide from one question: “What was there before or who lived in my house?” I worked for Butlin’s for several years and for their 75th anniversary produced a book on its history, which lead to numerous radio interviews, newspaper articles and lots of questions. Another interesting connection I discovered Sylvia. was to the White Tower near the Royal Norfolk, which linked with Geraldton in Australia and I am still in contact with the museum people there. The story of the ALG in North Bersted produced a link with Norway and the pleasure of taking two Norwegian Historians around our town. In providing talks in the area, I have met many interesting people who have had links with Bognor Regis. Another interesting link was a visit to Bognor in Canada. When we visited complete with camera, notebook and folders there was no school, no church and no pub. When we found the postmistress we asked, what was the population she thought carefully and replied 185. But we did meet their local historian – you just never know where your explorations will take you. Then unexpectedly, nothing to do with local history but an article in the paper, when I asked ‘What is that? I found myself becoming involved each Saturday morning with the worldwide parkrun. For me it is in Hotham Park from 9am and covers 5k, my involvement now, because of health issues is taking photographs and meeting people from across the globe and of course making new friends. Just by asking: ‘What is that?’ Try it! I am sorry this is my last article for this magazine, which has kindly allowed me to write monthly. I am still around, so please say ‘Hi!’ if you see me. LITTLEHAMPTON TOWN HERITAGE TRAIL

A fully accessible walk of just over 2 miles, taking you around some of Littlehampton’s lesser-known historic sites with plenty of refreshment stops along the way. Full details of the trail can be found online or a trail leaflet can be picked up from the museum. • The trail begins at Littlehampton Museum, housed in the grand Manor House, which has been home to several notable residents and remains one of the town’s most distinguished historic buildings. Just outside the museum grounds was the location of the old town pump, where villagers collected their water. It remained a familiar landmark until its removal in 1933. Across the road is Manor Parade, now a row of shops but once the site of the Island Pond, it was surrounded by pigsties and rubbish from nearby cottages, and the village stocks Littlehampton Museum. also stood beside it. • The trail follows Beach Road to the Littlehampton War Memorial, then continues east to the Library before heading south along Fitzalan Road and into Irvine Road. At the far end stand six grand semi‑detached houses known as Selbourne Place, built for six sisters descended from the naturalist Gilbert White of Selborne. Each pair originally had interconnecting doors so the sisters could move easily between them. Littlehampton Library. • It’s worth extending the trail into Beach Town and along Western Road, where many houses along this road still carry names hinting at their former uses. The road is also the site of the 1920s Littlehampton “poison‑pen” scandal — an extraordinary miscarriage of justice between two neighbours, sparked by a stream of anonymous, profanity‑filled letters that shocked the town and captivated the national press. The story was recently retold in the film Wicked Little Letters. • At the far end of Western Road, head towards Norfolk Gardens, then walk back along South Terrace to the end of St Augustine Road. Here the 30th Assault Unit had its Second World War headquarters. Ian Fleming — later the creator of James Bond — served as the unit’s senior commanding officer, and his time here is said to have inspired elements of the Bond stories. • Cross Beach Green and walk west along the promenade to the pier. The lighthouse here dates from the late 1940s. Earlier lighthouses stood at both ends of the pier and were known as the “Salt and Pepper Pots”, but their distinctive shapes made them vulnerable during the Second World War and they were demolished for safety. • From the pier, follow the riverside path. You’ll pass the Oyster Pond, created in the 18th century to store oysters caught by local fishermen. By the late 19th century it had become an ornamental feature where children sailed their model boats. The row of shops and cafés along Pier Road is known as Mussel Row. It was once home to the town’s oyster fishermen, who moored their boats nearby. Their muscular appearance earned the area the nickname “Muscle Row”, which later evolved into “Mussel Row”. • Continue along the river and finish the trail at the RNLI station. BLOOD BIKERS BY STEVE PEARCE My name is Steve Pearce and I live in Felpham. My day job is a driving instructor, but I am also a very experienced and enthusiastic motorbiker and when I can, I volunteer for the charity Service Emergency Rider Volunteers (SERV Sussex) which has been supporting NHS hospitals across Sussex since 1981. Known as the "Blood Bikers of Sussex", we are a dedicated team of unpaid volunteer riders, drivers and controllers providing free transport services for urgent medical items. Operating every night from 7pm to 6am throughout the year, and 24 hours a day on weekends and Bank Holidays, we transport blood, blood products, laboratory samples, patient notes, X-rays and other time-sensitive medical supplies between hospitals. We also deliver donated human milk from donors to milk banks and neonatal units, ensuring vulnerable babies receive the nutrition they need and assist with clinical treatment trials that require the rapid movement of laboratory samples. I’ve been a Blood Biker for seven months now. People often ask why I do it. The answer is simple: it’s incredibly rewarding to know you’re helping save lives. We don’t use blue lights or exceed the speed limit, but many of the items we carry are time-critical. Knowing that what you’re transporting could make a real difference to someone’s treatment is a powerful feeling. Whenever I’ve met people who have personally benefited from SERV’s work, they’ve been so appreciative that it reminds me exactly why I volunteer. Steve Pearce at Hooley I’m fortunate that I don’t work fixed hours, which allows me to volunteer on the A23 – one of the whenever SERV is short of cover and take on ad hoc runs. We deliver to West collection points to meet Sussex Hospitals. Most shifts involve at least four hours of volunteering and the Surrey and London around 120 miles of riding. In the last two months alone, I’ve covered around group at 22:30hrs. 1,300 miles and volunteered approximately 20 hours each month. To become a Blood Biker for SERV you must hold a full motorcycle licence. After that, there’s a DBS check, followed by revision and a written test that you must pass. You then complete an assessed ride with a local training team, followed by a familiarisation ride, where you learn all the hospital collection and delivery points. A big part of the training is understanding how to safely transport blood, platelets and other medical items. These are carried in secure transport boxes packed with dry ice, so we never handle the contents directly. We also train for any situations that might arise while on a delivery. When we’re carrying a consignment, we have to stick to pre-planned routes. This ensures that if anything happens – whether it’s a puncture or something more serious – the priority is always getting the medical supplies safely to the hospital as quickly as possible. SERV is always looking for volunteers not just motorcyclists. We also have volunteers who use cars for deliveries, people who collect donations at local supermarkets on weekends and controllers who answer the phones and coordinate the riders. The charity also maintains a fleet of dedicated vehicles funded entirely through donations from individuals, businesses and charitable trusts. Summer is the busiest and most important time of year for Bognor Regis. It is when our cafés, pubs, attractions, and independent businesses welcome visitors, our beaches fill with families, and our town has the chance to show exactly what makes it special. That’s why I was so disappointed to see Bognor Regis dismissed as Britain's "worst seaside town" in a recent newspaper article. This lazy trope may have made for an easy headline, but it does not tell the full story of the town we know and love. Are there challenges? Of course there are. Empty shops, antisocial behaviour and lower footfall affect businesses and residents alike. We should never pretend otherwise. But pride in Bognor Regis means refusing to let them define us. There is another story unfolding here: one of investment, ambition and people who believe this town's best days are still ahead. A new £13 million Premier Inn now welcomes visitors to our seafront. Butlin's has invested around £20 million Alison Griffiths. in recent years, including PLAYXPERIENCE and its new soft play centre and will welcome 70,000 visitors to the town this summer. The Alexandra Theatre is being transformed through a £15 million regeneration project, while improvements to the promenade and plans for the Marine Quarter are helping unlock the potential of our coastline. These are not the signs of a town standing still. They are the foundations of a town moving forward. That is why, during recess, I will be out meeting businesses, supporting community groups, and making the case for Bognor Regis. I recently welcomed Nigel Huddleston, the Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, to hear directly from our tourism businesses about the opportunities they see and the barriers they face under this Labour government. I will also keep pressing for improvements where they are needed most: a safer town centre, cleaner bathing water and the investment our businesses need to thrive. Building a stronger Bognor Regis is not the job of one MP, one council or one organisation. It belongs to all of us. So this September, support a local pub, café, or restaurant. Visit one of our attractions. Welcome visitors warmly. Celebrate the investment arriving in our town, while continuing to demand better where things still need fixing. That is how seaside towns succeed. Not by pretending everything is perfect. Certainly not by talking ourselves down. But by backing the people and projects working to make things better. Headlines come and go. What matters is what we do to back the place we call home. I'll be doing my part every day this summer. Together, let's show what Bognor Regis is capable of!

THE POWER OF COLOUR

Colour is a powerful thing. It has the power to make us look and feel healthier and more energised. It has the power to give us messages about what something’s about – even without words. And it can affect the impact we have and how others see us. But many of my clients say they only Vicky Booker. wear black or neutral tones, and shy away from colour. It can be down to confidence; we all have that go-to black dress. It can be linked to our mood – how happy and energised do we feel when we see golden yellow sunshine? And it can be down to practicality – white trousers on a dog walk anyone? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not ‘dissing’ black! I’m not saying don’t wear it. It has a place; it serves a purpose; it can be practical; it can be a ‘wow’ colour on some people; it can have impact and give gravitas to the wearer; it’s ‘in fashion’. But why ignore the hundreds of other gorgeous colours, shades and tones? Ultimately, we can wear whatever colour we like, but when we wear ‘our colours’, our skin will appear smoother and clearer, with less shadows, our eye colour is enhanced, and people will notice US more than what we’re wearing. See the difference wearing the best shades makes on my client here. In the softer shades (right) she looks a little flat and her skin and eyes are dulled down. But in the brighter bolder colours she comes alive, looks radiant, and her eyes sparkle! It’s easy to get a bit of colour into your wardrobe without dressing head to toe in bold shades! A scarf, handbag or piece of jewellery can be a great way of injecting a pop of colour to a neutral outfit. SMALL SCREEN Dr Who "The Climate Conundrum" BBC1 5 September Dr Who fans have been waiting a long time for these new instalments of the timelord’s adventures. The third episode of this highly anticipated new series has mostly been kept under wraps by the BBC but it promises much under the new direction of showrunner Steven Knight and Billie Piper who we last saw regenerating as the new Doctor in the previous episode. Piper is a Dr Who fan favourite, she previously played companion Rose Tyler in 2005 and 2006 but there is much conjecture about the future of the Timelord as Piper’s regeneration has been muted as just temporary until a new permanent Doctor is announced. The National Television Awards – ITV1- 8 September Coming from the O2 Arena in London, this year’s awards are the 31st airing of the event that celebrates all the very best-loved shows and stars of British television, with the winners determined by viewer votes. Multi time winners Ant and Dec are once again hoping to reclaim their crown in the Best TV Presenter category after Gary Lineker famously broke their 23-year winning streak last year! The Last Night of the Proms BBC1 & 2 – 12 September Rounding off a wonderful summer of live music the finale is once again broadcast live on the BBC from the Royal Albert Hall in London. This year’s Last Night features world renowned pianist Yuja Wang and tenor Nicky Spence, amongst others and will conclude the 2026 Prom season as always with plenty of wonderful pomp and circumstance.

FEEDING OUR INSECTS IN THE SHADE

Our flying insect population has declined by at least 60 per cent in the last 20 years … and it matters! Insects are a critical part of life on this planet, providing food for other creatures, recycling dead matter be it plants or creatures, controlling pests, and providing critical pollination for over 75 per cent of our food crops. Sir David Attenborough has said: "every space in Britain must be used to help wildlife!" SO, LETS USE OUR GARDEN SPACE to do just that! Shade often feels like a problem, it’s not, you just need to use insect friendly plants that are happy to grow in shade or semi shade. So, let’s look at some … SHADE SHRUBS Mahonia, which flowers from late autumn to late winter, produces gloriously scented bright yellow flowers, a treat for insects who may emerge in a warm winter spell. Its black berries are loved by birds, and it will grow well in part or even full shade. Pyracantha, producing nectar rich flowers in spring and berries later in the year, is a dream for blackbirds and thrushes to name but a few. It also provides safe nesting sites once mature. Holly and berberis darwinii or thunbergii, also provide nectar, pollen, berries and safe nesting. The deep leaf litter of a Holly also provides hibernating shelter for many creatures, including hedgehogs, so don’t clear it away. Holly thrives in shade, choose partial shade for berberis. Dry shade … not an issue…you really can’t go wrong with sarcococca confusa, its sweet, scented flowers will stop you in your tracks in mid-winter, so grow it close to the door. Bees and other insects, love the nectar and pollen the flowers produce and berries develop which the birds love. It’s tough and great for everyone … so a must. SHADE GROUND COVER Plant around shrubs to help your insect friends. Gallium odoratum, (sweet woodruff) is beautiful, and in spring, rich in nectar and pollen. It will carpet the ground under shrubs, has pretty evergreen leaves, and in spring, dainty eye-catching white flowers. This a must, and acts as a living mulch. It needs moisture as a young plant but will adapt to drier conditions once established. It may not be easy to buy in local garden centres but can be bought online. Lamiums, (deadnettles), another must, insects just love them! They are actually from the mint family, so do not sting, probably evolving to have similarities to nettles to protect themselves from being eaten. Flowers are produced from March onwards until winter in some cases, so providing early and late food for insects. A pretty flower coming in various colours, all shade loving, and further, are classed as a top pollinator by the R.H.S. Butterflies, moths, bees and more flock to them for nectar (carbohydrate) and pollen (protein), and the leaves are food for the caterpillars of many moths. Adult butterflies and moths may lay their eggs on lamium leaves, so that on hatching the caterpillars have a good food supply ready and waiting ... more good parenting!

TAGLIATELLE WITH SMOKED SALMON
Ingredients (serves 4) 1 tbsp vegetable oil 250g chestnut or button mushrooms, quartered 375g dried or fresh tagliatelle 125g pack of smoked salmon, 3 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
200ml carton half fat crème fraiche Juice of one lemon Salad to serve
Method • Heat the oil in a frying pan, add the mushrooms and cook for 8 minutes until they begin to go brown. • Meanwhile, bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. Add the pasta and cook according to the packet instructions. • Stir in the salmon, parsley, crème fraiche and lemon juice into the mushrooms and season. • Drain the pasta and quickly toss in the creamy sauce • Serve immediately with salad and enjoy!

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES FOR NUTRITION
We're constantly told to eat more fruit and veg, but not all produce offers the same nutritional punch So while every portion contributes towards a healthier diet, some fruits and vegetables provide far more vitamins, minerals and fibre than others. Let’s see the good from the… not so good. THE BIG FIVE Let's start with five nutritional stars. Blueberries frequently appear near the top of healthy eating lists. Packed with antioxidants and vitamin C, they're associated with a wide range of health benefits, and as well as being tasty and easy to consume, they’re particularly popular for supporting overall wellbeing. Kiwis are often overlooked but contain impressive levels of vitamin C, fibre and potassium. Their nutrient density makes them one of the most valuable fruits available, and as for the effect on the tastebuds … ! Broccoli has earned its reputation as a superfood. Rich in vitamins C and K, fibre and plant compounds, it offers considerable nutritional value while remaining low in calories. Spinach delivers a powerful combination of iron, folate, vitamins and antioxidants. Whether eaten raw or cooked, it provides a substantial nutritional boost… just ask Popeye! Finally, sweet potatoes round up the top five. High in fibre, vitamin A and beneficial plant compounds, they offer a more nutritious alternative to many refined carbohydrate options. LESS GOOD … BUT STILL GOOD! At the other end of the scale are fruits and vegetables that provide fewer nutrients relative to their calorie content or water content. To start, the humble iceberg lettuce, which is crisp and refreshing, definitely, but contains significantly fewer vitamins and minerals than darker leafy greens such as spinach or kale. Cucumber is hydrating and low in calories, but much of its composition is water, meaning its nutritional profile is comparatively modest. Celery shares similar characteristics. It recently gained the reputation of requiring more energy to consume it than it actually offers, yet that’s not all - while healthy as a snack, it contains fewer nutrients than many other vegetables. Aubergine offers some benefits but generally provides lower concentrations of vitamins and minerals compared with many colourful vegetables. Watermelon, meanwhile, is enjoyable and hydrating, particularly during summer, albeit the nutritional density on offer is lower than fruits such as berries, kiwis or citrus fruits. Through all this though, there is an important caveat. The healthiest fruit or vegetable is often the one you actually enjoy eating. Variety remains one of the most important principles of good nutrition, and regularly consuming a wide range of produce is likely to provide greater benefits than focusing exclusively on any single ‘superfood’ … so tuck in!
