Dear All, Music is often the soundtrack to our lives and I’m delighted that we are able to feature local choirs, jazz and rock concerts in this month’s issue. There is nothing like live music to boost your mood and get your feet tapping – and this applies across the ages!

Discos and parties are also back and as Halloween and Christmas approach you may be planning a celebration at home or in a local venue. Do go and visit our village halls and community spaces – there are so many to choose from and they have brilliant facilities.

For the music, if you don’t want live music do think about a DJ. We all know that playlists are plentiful, but a DJ can make sure you have the music you like so the party goes with a bang. I know this because my husband Jim is a DJ, aka DJ Sunnyside, and he gets so many comments from people who say he “made” the party sing because he played the right music at the right time, and everyone felt included (even those who didn’t dance!).

A former teacher and lawyer - he is not your typical DJ but he knows how to read a room and change the mood and the beat to make sure everyone is happy whether it’s a 10 year-old birthday disco or a 60th celebration party. No automatic playlist can do that.

BACK TO SCHOOL BLUES

The morning I had been dreading for six weeks had arrived. 5 September 2023. With my eyes tightly shut I was hoping to time travel right through to Christmas. The problem. That’s impossible. So, what should I do? I decided to lie in my bed as still as a statue pretending to play dead! My mum came into my room, opened the curtains and called out my name a few times. She stopped calling (what a sneaky boy I am, I thought - maybe I can pull this off). Little did I know but as Mum walked towards me, she whipped off my covers (oh no) and decided to tickle my feet. Instantly I wobbled around like a bowl of jelly having a fit (why am I so ticklish?). I’d blown my cover. I was out of sneaky ideas. It was time to get ready for school. And quickly or I’d be late.

Reluctantly I walked towards my wardrobe groaning and got out my uniform. This is not what I had been used to since the summer term ended, I thought to myself; itchy clothes and waking up early. Just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse, a button ripped off my shirt. Noooooo! I angrily pulled out another shirt, this time carefully doing my buttons up and put my tie on in the usual scruffy way.

I stumbled down the stairs to the kitchen to find watery porridge on the table. I gulped it down and having put a complaint in to the chef, went back upstairs to brush my teeth. The clock was ticking, the time was 7:55. I was going to be late. I rushed back down the stairs, opened the garage door and picked up my rucksack. I got my bike out dodging all the mess in the garage (which, by the way, my Dad had only tidied at the weekend) accidentally banging into shoes and all sorts. I managed to manoeuvre out of the garage and got on my bike. Something felt wrong, My tyre was flat. I had a puncture. NOOOOOO! Things had gone from bad to EVEN worse.

What could I do? If I walked I’d be late. It was a scorching hot morning so I couldn’t run. I’d have to get a lift. That was my last chance (my best bet) of not getting detention on the first morning back. By now my Mum had gone to work. My Dad was my last chance and he isn’t a fan of “early” mornings. However, he could see how desperate I was, and we ran into the car and sped off to Felpham Community College to start Year 8. Luckily, I made it to school right in the nick of time. What a chaotic morning, back to school blues at its worst!

Why Should I Get A Lasting Power of Attorney?

Getting a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a crucial legal document that allows you to appoint someone you trust to make important decisions on your behalf if you become unable to make those decisions yourself. Every day we make decisions about our lives. The ability to make these decisions is called mental capacity. People may not be able to make decisions some or all of the time, perhaps because they have had a sudden injury or a stroke. If you lose mental capacity without a Lasting Power of Attorney in place, your loved ones will need to apply through the court to become a ‘Deputy’ in order to sort out your finances or welfare, which is a long and expensive process.

You can choose whether it can be used either before, or only when, you lose mental capacity. Here are some compelling reasons why you should consider getting an LPA:

1. Ensure Your Wishes Are Respected: An LPA ensures that your preferences and wishes are respected, even if you are no longer able to communicate or make decisions. This can include healthcare decisions, financial matters, and more.

2. Choose Your Decision-Maker: With an LPA, you have the ability to select someone you trust, such as a family member or close friend, to act as your attorney. This allows you to have control over who makes decisions for you.

3. Plan for the Unexpected: Life is unpredictable, and accidents, illnesses, or cognitive decline can happen at any age. Having an LPA in place ensures that someone you trust can step in to manage your affairs when needed.

4. Avoid Court Appointments: Without an LPA, if you become incapacitated and haven’t appointed someone to make decisions for you, the court may need to appoint a guardian or deputy. This process can be time-consuming, expensive, and

may result in someone being appointed who you wouldn’t have chosen yourself.

5. Maintain Financial Stability: An LPA for financial affairs allows your attorney to manage your finances, pay bills, and ensure your financial well-being is maintained, preventing financial hardships in case of incapacity.

6. Healthcare Decisions: An LPA for health and welfare enables your attorney to make decisions about your medical treatment and care, ensuring you receive the treatment you would want, even if you can’t express your wishes.

7. Reduce Family Conflict: By clearly specifying your preferences in an LPA, you can help prevent potential disputes among family members about your care or financial matters.

ROYAL NAVY SCHOOL OF PHOTOGRAPHY - FELPHAM

As you stroll through Middleton, do you wonder what secrets lay hidden? Do you know where the Royal Navy School of Photography was situated?

During the Second World War, it would appear that the Admiralty acquired a number of empty properties on the Summerley estate, around Second, Third, Fourth Ave, Limmer Lane and the Strand appeared to be the central.

From the information received, meals were taken at a home in Limmer Lane whilst Second Ave, was then used for accommodation. One home was occupied by forty students, their furniture consisted of bunk beds, chairs and tables and were of basic Admiralty issue.

The students four-month course during 1944 was where they qualified and conducted air photography for Royal Navy use. The students used an Avro Anson aircraft and took turns in going into the nose cone where the F24 Camera was mounted on a cradle for their use.

One student recalled that they were paid 21s. per week and paid fortnightly. On arrival at Bognor Regis Railway station, they were instructed to march to the school, a distance of approx. five miles. There was a mobile WRVS canteen which visited during the weekends to allow them to purchase chocolate bars and stationery; this supplemented their meals which were cooked by Wrens.

Travelling away from Felpham was forbidden and their leisure activities were held around the homes but occasionally they went to either The Fox or Thatch for ‘refreshment.’

‘The RAF Heritage Group / The Retirement of the Tornado’

Presented by Sqn Ldr Rick Lipscomb

Sqn Ldr Rick Lipscomb will give this presentation which combines two stories into one. It is about a factor of the RAF that little is known about and will be of interest to anyone with a passion for history or aviation in general. His talk will look at the work of the RAF Heritage Group in ensuring the preservation and sharing of the RAF’s history and story-telling. He will focus particularly on the retirement of Tornado, but also include RAF station closures, gate guards, artwork, silverware and medals. The retirement of the Tornado after 30 years of distinguished service, prompted great interest from the media and from museums wishing to acquire an example.

Rick will explain as to how all of these items are sought, how it is decided which museums, both RAF and civil, they will be moved to, and how these items are actually moved, many by large road transport.

ANCIENT TREES AND FALLOW DEER

A 6.5 km (4 miles) circular walk through the beautiful Petworth Park. A great time to visit is in the autumn when the leaves are changing colours and England’s largest collection of fallow deer can be heard rutting.

• The trek starts in the car park (furthest north from the house) and sets out in a westerly direction on the path leading out of the woods and into the rolling terrain of the park. Much of the park’s landscape has been laid out by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, in particular the ponds and the strategically planting of many of the trees.

• Cross over the spring that supplies water to the upper and lower ponds via several miles of underground drains and tunnels and continue past Shepherds Lodge, heading up the hill to Upperton Tower. The tower, also known as ‘The Monument’ was built in 1816 at a point where the main house could just be seen. Although referred to as ‘The Monument’ it does not commemorate anything and there is very little history on this building. It sits at 125m, the highest point in the park and has some terrific views of the Sussex countryside beyond.

• Admiring the views retrace your steps and follow the contours around a natural bowl in the landscape to a steep decent down to the stony track. Many of the fallow deer can be seen much closer here as it tends to be a quieter part of the park. Follow the path south which gradually rises and on reaching the top Tillington Church Tower can be seen in the distance and the Upper Pond will also come into view. Head towards the pond taking the grassy path down to the waters edge.

• The Upper Pond was redesigned between 1752 - 1756 and to create the pond Capability Brown built a dam across the valley. The upper pond was captured by Turner in one of his pictures called ‘Dewy Morning’. As you descend it is clearly seen that the pond is designed to simulate a river flowing through the landscape.

• Follow the iron fence around the pond to the unusual boathouse (also built by Brown in 1756), on top of the boathouse is a platform where views across the pond, it’s wildfowl and sussex countryside can be seen, look over the edge to see a ‘Neptune head’ sculpture embedded into the wall above the arches that was taken from the house.

• Head away from the Upper Pond on the Lawns toward the house with it’s air of grandeur and prominence on the landscape. The wrought Iron gates lead to the ‘Pleasure Grounds’, designed to inspire a range of emotions, take some time here to discover the Doric temple, Ionic Rotunda and war memorial. Petworth House was built in 1682 and for an additional fee the house can be entered to see the many state rooms including paintings by well known artists.

• Once back in the park, follow the wall that borders the pleasure grounds and here can be seen the oldest oak in the park at 940 years old. Some recent archaeology has revealed what is thought to be the remains of the Henry VIII banqueting or hunting lodge in the area just before the descent to Lower Pond.

• Just past the pond was once the site of an army camp for American and Canadian airman. Post war it was used as a resettlement camp for displaced Polish families up until 1959. There is no evidence left of the camp and the entrances in the wall have long been filled in.

• On the last stretch back to the car park look out for the ‘Beelzebub Oak’ which dates back to 1779 and marks the parish boundary, the name derives from a superstition that ‘beyond the parish boundary the land was spiritually suspect’.

50 SHADES … THE NEUTRAL COLOUR TREND FOR AUTUMN

If you’re a fan of neutrals, you’re in luck this season! Grey is a big colour trend on the catwalks and is filtering into the shops as we speak. A flattering neutral on most people regardless of your palette, but as ever, it’s how you wear it that’s important.

Charcoal grey is a universal shade in terms of colour analysis (the system of finding out which shades suit your personal colouring best). It’s a kinder alternative to black, which can be a little harsh on some people – especially those with warmth to their look and very light blondes. I think it’s also a very classy colour, and can be worn on its own, or with other neutrals like soft white for a chic look. I love this soft ruched knit from Massimo Dutti (right).

For a more casual look, this denim maxi skirt (left) from Mint Velvet is the ideal transitional piece for this in-betweeny weather. If you’re not sure if grey suits you, keeping it on the bottom half is a safe bet as its away from your face and will go with pretty much any other colour top you care to pair with it!

Fancy a lighter shade of grey? This jacket by Rochelle (right) at Next is ideal for those with fairer and cool colouring. It also hits two trends in one, as the bomber has been a massive street style look recently and most high street stores are offering up at least one option.

As ever, there’s always the option to bring in a colour trend with accessories. A silver-grey belt like this croceffect one from Oliver Bonas (left) will freshen up an old pair of jeans or modernise a simple pair of tailored trousers.

I’m a big fan of grey footwear. Often, we default to black for shoes, but it doesn’t always go with everything as much as people think, and it can be too strong a contrast if your outfit is a more delicate colour palette. So, a soft grey, like these boots from Jones the Bootmaker (right) could be a great addition to your wardrobe.

A note about hair; for you silver-haired beauties, grey is often a great colour for your wardrobe as it suits cool palettes. The trick is to get the right tone and depth, and to be wary of a head-to-toe look or you may disappear! Often a contrasting colour such as hot pink (another trend thanks to the Barbie effect!) works well with the grey.

BLUE IS BEAUTIFUL BY

Gentians have a reputation for being tricky little things to grow and it isn’t entirely undeserved. They’re a temperamental lot. They will only grow from fresh seed; they require the gardener to jump through hoops to get them to germinate; they don’t like being transplanted; they insist on free-draining but not impoverished soil...the list goes on. But those gorgeous ultra-marine trumpet flowers are so desirable, especially at this time of year when not much else is flowering.

I’ve had my fair share of failures with autumn gentians over the years but still I keep trying to grow them.

Like most of us I haven’t the time to devote to primping and preening the truly diva-ish varieties: those are best left to alpine devotees. I’ve had most success with Gentian sino-ornata. These form low growing clumps some 15cm / 6inches high and 30cm / 12inches across. In the right conditions they will produce gorgeous bright blue trumpets with pale green stripes from September all the way to November.

Gentians prefer shade for at least part of the day and, I can’t stress this bit enough, there must be no lime in the soil, or they’ll turn up their pretty blue toes and expire. Unfortunately, as I garden in an area rich in limestone, (our house is actually built on a limestone ridge!) the only way I can grow them is in low, dish-shaped containers where they can spread out a bit. If you’re making up your own pots, use ericaceous compost with added grit to promote drainage. An even easier way to grow them is to buy them ready-potted. Garden centres will sell them at this time of year.

In spite of their fussiness, they are hardy perennials. If you can get them established they’ll proliferate. In the garden divide them carefully, disturbing the roots as little as possible, every three years in the spring. If you’re growing them in pots then at the start of spring carefully scrape out some of the top compost and redress it with ericaceous compost. Keep it moist and in a partially shaded area and the flowers should return in the autumn. When the pot looks overcrowded you can try splitting them once the flowering season is over but often it is better just to buy new plants.

The trouble with gentians is that they’re addictive. Grow a few successfully and you’ll get greedy for those startling blue flowers and want more. Then you’ll start to think, ‘I wonder if they really are that difficult to grow from seed…’ and you’re lost.

CONSERVATION SUCCESS

Which stylish, black and white bird that features on the RSPB logo can you see around Pagham Harbour and Medmerry?

It is, of course, the avocet – a particularly striking and elegant wader with bold black and white wing patterns which you can fully appreciate when you see it in flight. It has a black cap which continues down its neck, and legs which have a bluish tone to them. But the most distinctive feature of the avocet is the upward curve of its long slender bill which you may see it sweeping from side to side to catch its dinner of worms and crustaceans.

So why is this bird used as the RSPB emblem? Why not a robin or a blackbird or other favourite British bird? The answer lies in a conservation success story dating back to World War II.

The avocet became extinct in the UK in the nineteenth century when hunting, egg collection and the fashion for wearing feathers were prolific. It was during World War II that the conditions for breeding avocets were accidentally recreated on the Suffolk coastal marshes when they were deliberately flooded as a defence against enemies. In 1947 when sea sluice operations were resumed, the drained land revealed reed beds, brackish pools and drainage channels – the perfect environment for waders such as the avocet. In the same year, the RSPB took over the management of this site at Minsmere and, as result of their work, avocets began to successfully breed again in the UK.

Nowadays, avocets are resident in various areas of the country with an estimated 1,950 breeding pairs. For a species that was extinct in the UK 75 years ago – that’s pretty amazing! At RSPB Medmerry’s Stilt Pools, they have been breeding since 2014; this year 14 young birds hatched.

Back in 1970, the RSPB logo was a simple black and white image of the avocet; you will see now that it still uses the avocet but has blue and green incorporated into it – colours which represent the land, sea and sky.

The symbol of the RSPB, the avocet, is still a rare breeding bird in the county but has been nesting at the RSPB’s Medmerry reserve since 2014 and small flocks of these distinctive, elegant black and white birds can still be seen in the area, often on the Ferry Pool at RSPB Pagham Harbour, through October.

IS A CAMPER VAN RIGHT FOR YOU?

The Motorhome and Caravan Show is on at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre this month (17-22 October). If you’ve ever hankered after life on the open road there is lots of choice, from day campers to micro campers and motorhomes.

Day campers - Camper vans or Class B motorhomes are compact vehicles for 2-4 people. They can be used for both daily commuting and weekend getaways. They feature basic amenities like sleeping space, a small kitchen, and sometimes a bathroom and are a great introduction to the world of camper vans.

Micro campers are even more compact, focusing on essential amenities while maintaining an easy-to-drive profile. They are ideal for solo travellers or couples seeking costeffective adventure. Despite their much smaller size, micro campers can still offer a comfortable sleeping area and a functional kitchenette, though you might have to stand outside to cook.

Motorhomes are larger, spacious, and wellequipped mobile homes, from Class C, with attached cabins to the luxurious Class A type which resemble buses. Motorhomes provide the most comprehensive amenities, including full kitchens, bathrooms, and even entertainment systems. They’re suitable for families or individuals looking for a more comfortable and extended travelling experience.

Motorhomes and campervans definitely offer the freedom to explore new places while having your accommodation readily available, allowing for spontaneous detours and unique experiences. In a motorhome the journey becomes an integral part of the holiday, encouraging you to take the scenic route and discover hidden gems along the way.

Enthusiasts will extol the cost-efficiency of motorhomes and campers. It’s true that they can save you money on accommodation and dining expenses. With a kitchen on board, there is the option to prepare your own meals, reducing the need to eat out, but…campervans and particularly motorhomes can be extremely expensive. New models can come in over £30000! That would pay for a fair few self-catering holidays, so if you only plan to use your motorhome once a year you might be better staying in a luxury lodge for a fortnight.

You also need to consider that regardless of the size, camper vans have limited living space compared to traditional homes. This requires careful organization and packing skills, plus an ability to get along very well with any travelling companions.

Maintaining any motorhome involves regular upkeep, storage, and servicing, and this can be more expensive than a regular vehicle.

Motorhomes can also be challenging to manoeuvre and park, especially in crowded areas, multistorey car parks or on narrow roads.

If you’re still keen, establish a budget before you start shopping. Decide which amenities are essential for your comfort and convenience. If a full bathroom or a spacious kitchen is high up on your list of priorities, accept that you are not going to get away with a micro camper.

Before committing it’s wise to rent the size and model you are considering for a few days to see whether it suits your needs. You might decide that the motorhome holiday is not for you…or you might just kickstart a whole new lifestyle.

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

Terry Pratchett’s “Good Omens,” a collaborative masterpiece co-written with Neil Gaiman, is an imaginative tour de force that seamlessly melds humour, fantasy, and social commentary. Published in 1990, the novel has become a timeless cult classic that continues to captivate readers with its wit and irreverence. The original book was adapted into a successful TV series, but the original book is definitely worth seeking out.

The story revolves around an angel, Aziraphale, and a demon, Crowley, who have grown accustomed to life on Earth and have developed a certain fondness for humanity. When the apocalypse looms, they join forces to prevent the end of the world, inadvertently misplacing the Antichrist in the process. What ensues is a delightful romp through absurd situations, satirical jabs at religious norms, and a heartwarming exploration of friendship.

Pratchett and Gaiman’s unique writing styles blend seamlessly. Pratchett’s penchant for witty wordplay and Gaiman’s darkly enchanting storytelling combine to produce a tale that’s as intellectually stimulating as it is entertaining. The duo weaves together multiple storylines, including the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, a quirky witch named Anathema Device, and a bumbling witch-hunter, creating an intricate tapestry of characters and events.

At its core, “Good Omens” is a celebration of the human experience. It nudges readers to question the conventions they take for granted while delivering laugh-out-loud moments that provide muchneeded levity. It’s no wonder that this book has become a cherished favourite among readers.

Get lost! – There will almost certainly be a Maize Maze near where you live, often accompanied by other attractions such as pumpkin patches and hayrides. Go and get lost with family or friends for an hour, then hit the farm shop after to stock up on goodies.

Pick your own pumpkin – This is a fun activity (and cute photo op) for all the family. Head to your local pumpkin patch and choose your favourite. You might be able to carve or paint it on site too.

Take a guided ghost walk – There might be one in your town, or nearby. The guide dresses up and tells stories of hauntings and horror. Some are kid-friendly too.

Go leaf-collecting – Dress up warm and head out to the local woods. See how many different colours and types of leaves you can collect. Press them between sheets of blotting paper when you return home and use them to make pictures or decorate cards.

Read a creepy book – Cool autumn evenings are just right for curling up with a good book. Try Erin. E Adam’s Jackal, about a Black woman, Liz Rocher, returning to her predominantly white hometown in Pennsylvania to attend a wedding, and discovering a horrifying secret, that children have been vanishing in the nearby forest for years. ROASTED CAULIFLOWER

WITH SPINACH, SAFFRON, PINE NUTS AND RAISINS

If you can’t think of anything to do with cauliflower other than steam it or make cauliflower cheese with it, try this tasty, delicious recipe, either as a side dish, or as the main supper event with crusty rolls or garlic bread.

Preparation time: 10 minutes. Cooking time: 20 minutes. Serves: 4

INGREDIENTS

1 medium cauliflower, cut into florets.

3 tbsp olive oil

1 large onion thinly sliced.

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp ground turmeric

METHOD

Pinch of saffron, infused in 150ml boiling water.

3 tbsp pine nuts, lightly toasted 75g raisins, soaked in warm water.

300g spinach leaves

1 tbsp butter (optional)

• Blanch the florets for 1 minute, then drain.

• How to blanch.

• Have ready a large bowl of ice-cold water, a slotted spoon, and a plate lined with a clean cloth or paper towel for draining.

• Bring a large pot of water to boil over high heat.

• Just before adding the vegetables, add a generous pinch of salt.

• Add the florets to the pot in small batches so that the water continues to boil. After about 1-2 minutes remove them from the boiling water with a slotted spoon and plunge them into the ice bath to stop the cooking process in a process called ‘shocking’.

• When the florets are completely cool, remove them from the ice bath and drain on the towellined plate.

• Heat the olive oil in a heavy saucepan then add the onion and a pinch of salt. Cook on a low heat until soft then add the ground spices and cook for another couple of minutes.

• Add the blanched cauliflower florets. Pour in the saffron water, add the pine nuts, drained raisins and spinach leaves. Cook until the leaves have wilted and cauliflower is soft, and you have a thin sauce. Season to taste and add the butter, if using.

CLEANING HACKS FOR WHEN TIME IS SHORT

We all know how wonderful our homes look and smell after a deep clean. But real life is crazy busy and sometimes we might let things slide for a week…or several (or is that just me? Tell me it’s not just me!) and suddenly we realise that friends or relatives are arriving imminently, and the house is not quite as sparkly as it might be.

• Don’t panic if your house looks like the aftermath of a natural disaster, it’s actually not that difficult to fake a clean-ish house with only 30-60 minutes to spare. It’s mainly about perception. Concentrate on where the visitors will be rather than the whole house.

• Clutter isn’t exactly unclean, but it can make your space look uncared for. Hot spots are the porch and hallways, the living room, and the kitchen. Mentally divide clutter into five categories: rubbish, laundry, dirty dishes, items which have a designated home and items which don’t have a designated home. Whip round the three hotspots with a bin bag. Throw obvious rubbish straight into it then take it to the bin. Then whizz round again collecting all dirty cups and plates, take them to the kitchen and deposit them in the sink. Do the same for dirty laundry, depositing it all in the laundry bin. Do a final sweep for items with and without homes. Return all the ‘homed’ items to their designated places and dump the rest in the tub to be dealt with later. Put somewhere your guests won’t be (even if that’s in the boot of your car!)

• Return to the kitchen, wash the dishes, and put them away. Clear kitchen surfaces give the impression of a house under control, so put as much as you can into cupboards, then wipe the counters.

• Empty the kitchen bin and open the windows to air the space.

• Your home should be looking better already.

• If the visitors are arriving in the daytime, open the curtains and blinds to let light flood in; well-lit spaces are perceived as cleaner than those that are dimly lit. Cast an eye around for obvious dust (the TV can collect a surprising amount, ditto for coffee tables and mirrors!) If the visitors are arriving after dusk, ambient lighting is your friend. Cosy lamplight can hide a multitude of dusty sins.

• Plump up cushions and put out fresh towels in any bathroom your guests might use (flush the loo too, especially if you have teens who routinely forget…just me again?)

• Finally spritz a little scent around. Anything citrussy brightens the space because we are conditioned to think that ‘lemon smells clean’.

• Add a plant or flowers. If you have time, grab a bunch of flowers. It doesn’t have to be big or showy. Even a few sprigs of greenery in a vase will make it look as though you have your act together.

Then open the wine, order a takeaway, and enjoy spending time with your guests.

As we approach the time of year when the evenings are getting darker, it is an excellent time to review your home security. Most burglars are opportunists and will always look for a soft target – a premises that appears unoccupied or one which is easy for them to break into or already insecure. Before going out or going away, we recommend you do the following:

• Close and lock all doors and windows even if you will only be gone for a short amount of time.

• During the hours of darkness, shut the curtains and leave a light on – this can be a significant deterrent as burglars like to ‘work’ unseen and will tend to avoid a home that looks occupied.

• If you are out for long periods of time then consider the use of a timer switch to trigger one or more lights or a radio in the house which again will give the impression that someone is at home.

• If you have an alarm, ensure it is set.

• Keep valuables out of sight.

• Ensure all side gates, sheds and garages are kept locked.

• Don’t leave car documents or ID on view.

• Keep handbags and keys away from letterboxes or cat flaps.

• Consider installing a video doorbell. This can act as a deterrent, keeping your property safe as well as helping to solve crimes.
