Hello, welcome to this month’s magazine. At the time of writing we are enjoying some lovely spring weather - long may it continue! (did someone say BBQ?!)

As always there is so much going on in the area over the next few weeks. Among other things the annual Regis Open Studios Art Trail (page 24) takes place over the first two weekends in May & is a lovely way to spend a couple of hours or so.

You may even find that piece of art that you fall in love with!

It's that time of year when there seems to be a bank holiday bonanza. We've just had Easter Monday, and now we have two bank holidays in May. Us Brits certainly like to celebrate the arrival of spring. But as a nation we're a funny old bunch (and that's without mentioning Brexit!) and we tend to panic at all this extra time off. What on earth will we do with it?

So here is my Brits guide to Bank Holidays...

We ask everyone else what they're doing, kind of like Christmas! As a nation we get excited about the prospect of a longer than usual weekend.

We make vague plans about weekends away. According to my immediate circle of friends The Cotswolds / Paris / Ironbridge / The Lake District (delete as applicable) are all 'lovely at this time of year...' But we will always leave it too late, or won't agree on a destination, or discover every hotel has suddenly doubled its prices, so we never actually go.

At least one friend will remind you in bitter tones that they are a nurse / barperson / taxi driver (delete as applicable) and they will be working while you are relaxing.

Sympathise with them, and maybe buy them a bottle of wine. Without these people the country would grind to a halt.

Every teacher friend you possess will make a huge deal about them not actually having a holiday weekend, because they will be marking...again! Teachers do this every holiday though, because they suspect we secretly think they are all part-timers (we don’t!).

We buy paint in anticipation of giving a room a facelift. Bank holidays were absolutely designed for repainting the sitting room!

We buy bedding out plants, compost and 'garden features', because Bank holidays were absolutely designed for prettying our little plot of land.

We tentatively suggest a barbecue to family and friends because as well as being obsessed by weather we are also eternal optimists about it. And if it rains, we still barbecue because that's what you do on a bank holiday in May, and well...it gives the guests something to talk about while they sip their beer, 'Looks like it might brighten up later...' as the hail slams into the awning.

We plan a film night. When we finally face the reality that there isn't going to be a heatwave, and the weather is more barmy than balmy we hit Netflix or Sky Movies and dial a pizza with extra pepperoni and a large garlic bread. Because Bank holidays and carbs were made for each other.

Finally, we have the Sunday blues on a Monday night.

Bank holidays are gone in the blink of an eye and all too soon it's back to work. But cheer up, it's only four days until the weekend. Unless you're a teacher...they'll be marking all weekend...again!

We check the weather forecast repeatedly and rejoice equally in headlines which read IT'S GOING TO BE A SCORCHER or IT'S GOING TO BE A WASHOUT...because Brits love weather‌all weather!

Celebrate National Vegetarian Week (13th-19th May) with an easy midweek curry

Preparation time: 20 mins

Mango chutney, to serve

Cooking time: 20-30 mins

Method

Serves 3

Half-fill a saucepan with cold water and add the potatoes and carrots. Bring to the boil and cook gently for 8 minutes. Add the cauliflower florets and cook for a further 2 minutes. Drain everything in a colander and set aside.

Ingredients 2 medium potatoes (around 350g/12oz), peeled and cut into 2cm chunks 1 large carrot, peeled and sliced diagonally ½ cauliflower (around 300g/10½oz), cut into small florets and halved 3 tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil 1 large onion, coarsely grated or very finely chopped 1 tbsp medium or hot curry powder 1 x 227g tin chopped tomatoes 300ml/10fl oz vegetable or chicken stock (made with ½ cube), gluten-free if required 100g/3½oz frozen peas or two large handfuls young spinach leaves, or a mixture Plain yoghurt or vegan alternative, to serve

Heat the oil in a large, non-stick frying pan or wide-based saucepan. Add the onion, and cook over a medium heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring regularly until well softened and lightly golden. Add over the curry powder and cook for 30 seconds, stirring all the time.

Add the tomatoes to the onions and cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the stock and bring to a gentle simmer.

Add the partially cooked vegetables and peas and simmer gently for 5-10 minutes until everything is tender. If the sauce thickens too much, add a splash of water.

Serve immediately with yoghurt, mango chutney, and rice or naan.

Highdown Hill Hike.

A circular trek of 5km (3.1 Miles) rising up 81m (266 ft) to the top of Highdown Hill which on a clear day will give some amazing views across Worthing to Beachy Head in the East and the Isle of Wight in the West. The walk starts in the car park at the base of the hill however a shorter route can be taken by parking at the higher car park approximately half way to the top.

Over the road from the car park and behind the hedge is the footpath that ascends Highdown, it follows the edge of an arable field and leads firstly to the upper car park at 43m high. With the entrance on the left a visit could be made to ‘Highdown Gardens’, these were once the grounds of the nearby hotel. The gardens started their creation in 1909 in one of the many disused chalk pits

by Sir Frederick Stern and his wife, owner then of the Highdown Hotel, He developed the site until his death in 1967. In 1970 the gardens were passed to Worthing Borough Council who since the mid 1970s have restored them to Sterns' original design.

From the gardens head on upwards until reaching an unmissable burial chamber known as the ‘Millers Tomb’. So called after the miller ‘John Olliver’, who In the 18th century had this tomb built 27 yrs before he actually died in 1793. Many claim that he was the leader of local smugglers and used the tomb to store contraband. He would arrange the sails of his windmill at varying angles to indicate the absence of customs men to his fellow smugglers out at sea. The mill is said to have been damaged in a storm and since demolished, however the brick base of the mill can be seen as a mound at the south west corner of the hill fort.

Take the downward path a short way, then follow westwards along the lower part of the hill, the path passes many disused chalk pits and gives some great views across Worthing. The Highdown vineyard can be seen nestled on the lower south slopes, with great soil and plenty of sun, this working vineyard produces both still and sparkling English Wines. Further along can be seen the Roundstone Farm that got its name from an incident with a runaway millstone rolling down the hill following an accident.

Just past the large chalky escarpment, the path continues west and is then shielded from the hill behind a hedge, giving refuge to many birds. Before long Ecclesden Mill comes into view and is situated just above Ecclesden Manor. This brick tower mill is said to have been built shortly after the demise of John Olliver’s mill in 1826, Milling ceased at Ecclesden Mill in 1872 and the sails were blown off in a storm in 1880. It has since been renovated and is now a private residence.

Walk northwards past the mill and then head up the hill on the well worn track to the top at 81m.

The Bronze age saw the first settlers and a hill fort was constructed in the early iron age. Later on, this site also became an Anglo-Saxon cemetery and a number of unusual glass objects can now be seen in Worthing Museum. In more modern times the ancient archaeology of the site has been considerable damaged by a radar station that was built During World War II and many uprooted trees following the Great Storm of 1987.

On heading back down the hill, take a break in the Highdown Hotel built in 1820 as the family home of the Lyons family. In 1909 the house and surrounding grounds were bought by Major Stern and his wife, who’s surname was used as the name of a night club in the 80’s. A short descent from here leads back to the car park at the start.

More of us are turning to vegetarianism thanks to an abundance of scientific research that demonstrates both the health and environmental benefits of a plant-based diet.

An estimated 70 percent of all diseases, including one-third of all cancers, are related to diet. A vegetarian diet reduces the risk for chronic degenerative diseases such as obesity, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and certain types of cancer including colon, breast, prostate, stomach, lung and oesophageal cancer.

A vegetarian diet tends to increase bone strength. When there isn't enough calcium in the bloodstream, our bodies leach it from existing bone. This results in our skeletons gradually becoming porous and losing strength. Although you can take supplements, it's better to obtain calcium from your diet because food also supplies other nutrients such as phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin D, that are necessary for the body to be able to absorb and make use of calcium.

As a rough guide it takes 2,500 gallons of water, 5.5Kg / 12lbs of grain, nearly 16Kg /35lbs of topsoil and the energy equivalent of 4.5L /1 gallon of petrol, to produce one pound of beef! A vegetarian diet can sustain many more people, so is a more efficient use of resources.

Even if you have to avoid dairy, calciumrich foods include beans, tofu, plant-based milks like soy, oat, rice or almond, and dark green vegetables such as broccoli, and kale.

Finally, a vegetarian diet is cheaper.

Eating vegetables, grains and fruits in place of beef, chicken and fish would cut individual food bills by an average of ÂŁ500 per year.

Do you have lots of household DIY tasks mounting up? Are you starting to feel a little overwhelmed?

Hire a handyman!

A good handyman will have right tools, and know-how to get the job done efficiently.

Hiring someone who knows what they are doing will eliminate a lot of stress. Also, they will almost certainly save you money, especially if you would have to buy the right tools before you start or make a mistake which has to be put right!

When hiring: Be Specific - Give an idea of the scale and scope of the job or jobs. For example, 'Rehang garden gate, repaint gate and 17 metres of 2m high garden fence.'

Measurement are important as it gives idea of the scope of the task.

Send photos if you can - In the example above send photos of the gate and the fence. A picture will save a lot of words and help the handyman provide an accurate quotation.

Remember cheapest isn't necessarily the best. Check an online price guide. There is lots of guidance available, but you should definitely bear in mind the total hours required.

The handyman should be insured and have his own tools. Check all insurance documents carefully.

Take your time, be pleasant and ask questions. Get a quote in writing to make sure you know exactly what you're getting.

Then sit back and relax while someone else takes care of your household jobs!

Sage House celebrates one year of dementia support services Last year on the 8th May local charity Dementia Support opened its fantastic new dementia facility in Tangmere, near Chichester. Sage House provides complete dementia services under one roof – the first of its kind in the UK. This purpose-built facility boasts state of the art facilities and dementia friendly features which ensures a non-clinical, friendly and modern environment for those using Sage House.

Now a year on, this pioneering and unique place is celebrating its first birthday; to tie in with this momentous occasion the charity will be announcing some exciting news in May about its future plans to support the local community.

The 8th May will be a particularly special day with a Birthday Bake Off and vintage entertainment to celebrate with the Sage House family. During this week Dementia Support will unveil its exciting new plans.

The charity will be holding its own Wayfinding Week 13th – 17th May; Wayfinders are crucial members of the team at Sage House who provide support, information and advice for families and people living with dementia.

Dementia Action Week, 20th - 24th May is a national awareness week. Dementia Support will be holding its own events at Sage House. Join the charity for Dementia Friends Sessions each day and a Quiz Night on Friday 24th May. The charity supports people living with dementia, and their families and carers in the local community. Dementia Support has been very proud to offer information and advice, day care services, a community café, personal care, hairdressing and therapies, and social activities for hundreds of people during the last year.

We very often talk about the seafront, rising levels of shingle etc. etc. but what did Felpham seafront look like in the past. I was looking through some postcards and came across two that demonstrated the answer.

One card clearly shows the bathing huts, here called bathing cabins, along the grassy area of the promenade, however if you look closely you will find that the beach appears to run right up to the huts, without the prom. Apparently, there were bathing machines here as far back is 1781. We should remember that Felpham was famous as a seaside resort before Bognor developed. The second card shows the beach path at Felpham, clearly there are groynes but no real walk way and this card is dated 1955 – 64 years ago. In 1974 there was a remark in a ‘Sussex Onlooker’ magazine which said, “I remember when you could take a narrow path with a border of wild flowers on the one side and corn fields rippling in the sea breeze.

These postcards clearly show the increased development of the seafront in front of the village, a far cry from todays beach scene. It is interesting to read in various publications on the subject of sea levels and to notice how things have changed over the years. Levels in 1876 compared with 2010 showed a large change and only show why for many years there was flooding in Felpham. Many of us will remember the arrival of the large rocks from Norway in 1998, to provide the extra sea defences required.

Welcome to an Open Studio……

Local contemporary Artist, Susie Olford, will be exhibiting and painting in her Venue of the Regis Open Studios Art Trail. As always, this happens during the first two weekends of May, including Bank Holiday Monday. Visiting the Trail is a wonderful way to show your weekend visitors around our part of West Sussex. You will be able to see Susie working in oils mainly with a palette knife.

Susie’s venue in Flansham (PO22 8NJ) is a light filled barn.

Peter Hutton in Felpham (PO22 7QT) will show his dynamic vehicle and motorbike drawings and prints.

Jeanette Clarke returns to the Trail with her pen and watercolour wash work, mainly of local buildings. National Knife Crime Awareness Week – Operation Sceptre Tens of thousands of people joined in the conversation about knife crime across Sussex during a week‐long national campaign. During Operation Sceptre, which ran between March 11 and 17, officers were out across the county talking to people about knives. Schools, colleges and youth events were visited during the week to speak to young people about how to act if they feel pressure to carry a knife, and what to do if they feel in danger.

Throughout the week, 38 educational establishments were visited and approximately 5,600 young people spoken to about the impact of knife crime.

Test purchases were also carried out across the County. Police cadets worked with Officers and Trading Standards colleagues to try and buy a knife in shops when they were clearly under 18. Out of 47 shops test‐ ed, 12 failed.

Across the Force knife amnesty bins were in place in Police Stations and knives were handed in and will be destroyed.

Other activities included the use of a knife arch at railway stations. This acted as a metal detector and those who avoided the arch were spoken to by Officers.

This month - Scaling the walls What do you think of if I say ‘clematis’? I think most of us would think of the large, purple-flowered, “Jackmanii” or the rampant, bronze-leafed, pink-flowered montana rubens.

They are both terrific plants, but I think they are a little over-used. My husband teases me that I tend to give my ‘clematis lecture’ when visiting friends’ houses and see one scrambling over a trellis. For your benefit I’ve written it down here.

Clematis is known as the ‘Queen of Climbers’. It can be utterly spectacular and should definitely not be relegated to trellis.

It can used for covering fences and arbours, old tree stumps, sheds and even in beds and borders. Choose wisely and you can have flowers from early spring until late autumn.

For beds and borders you don’t want anything as vigorous as montana, which will smother everything it touches. Instead choose a daintier one such as a variety of texensis or viticella.

The flowers of the texensis hybrids look like finely cut bells. “Etoile Rose” is a beautiful dark pink edged with paler pink and “Princess of Wales” is a beautiful rosy red. Both of these will scramble through shrubs and flower all summer.

They die back in winter so can be tidied up then.

Viticella hybrids produce flowers which look like little pixie hats as they open.

“Minuet” has purple and white flowers suspended on fine stems

while “Purpurea Plena Elegans” produces double blooms which open into little purple rosettes.

One of the most difficult sites to find climbers for is an east or north facing site.

My absolute favourite clematis thrives in this situation and flowers in early spring.

Clematis alpina “Pink Flamingo” produces nodding, semi-double, creamy flowers veined with deep pink. It has the added bonus of producing beautiful fluffy seed heads after the flowers fade.

Clematis prefers its feet in the shade and its head in the sun. Make sure the plant’s roots are shaded: pieces of broken flagstone are ideal, or an old cracked upside-down terracotta pot with the bottom knocked out. When clematis is happy it will flower prolifically.

Large-flowered clematis tend to produce a second flush in the autumn, but others like tangutica and orientalis wait to flower until then. Both of these are very vigorous and are great for covering unsightly sheds or old trees.

Finally, if you have a sheltered spot against a wall try cirrhosa balearica.

This is a beautiful, winterflowering variety with ferny foliage and pale-green flowers spotted with crimson.

So, there it is…my clematis lecture. Hopefully you took notes and are ready to branch out into a whole new world of climbers.

Waders, terns and expectant mothers at Pagham Harbour & Medmerry As the weather warms up our reserves of Pagham Harbour and Medmerry are bustling with life. Avocets & little ringed plovers are settling down to breed on Medmerry’s Stilt Pools. Little ringed plovers are small waders with short legs, brown back and crown with white underparts. They have a distinctive black chest band, black mask with white forehead and a yellow eye-ring. The avocet is an elegant looking, black and white wader with long legs and an up-turned bill. The youngsters will begin hatching later this month and are like little pom -poms on legs but also have their parents’ distinctive bill shape.

In Pagham Harbour, little terns are returning to breed on Tern Island, just off Church Norton.

This is one of our reserve’s greatest conservation stories and as such a star species to see.

During the 1990’s their numbers crashed particularly along the south-coast with disturbance cited as one of the main causes, along with climate change and predation.

With careful conservation work they were lured back to Pagham Harbour and the colony has now grown to be one the most productive sites on the south-coast for this dainty little seabird.

Little terns are the smallest of our terns, sporting a black cap and white forehead, yellow legs and a yellow bill with a black tip. They share the island’s nesting rights with their cousins’, the sandwich and common terns, as well as black-headed gulls and ringed plovers.

Meanwhile, back in our Visitor Centre, on the B2145 to Selsey, we are following the fortunes of several species on our nest-cams. A beautiful tawny owl has been sitting on at least three eggs. The kestrels have been spending a lot of time in their high-rise ‘des-res’ and by the time you read this should be incubating eggs, along with our two blue tit families. You can follow their progress everyday on our cameras in the Visitor Centre on the B2145 between Chichester and Selsey.

Over the last couple of years, we have been doing a lot of work around our Visitor Centre and Discovery Zone.
