NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Since this month is Animal Rights Month, I'm going to talk about my two cats! I got Scarecrow (stripped brown-ish) and Ninja (black) at an animal shelter in Brooklyn. At the time, they were still 8-10 weeks old and extremely tiny! Now, they're both around 4 years old and twice the size they were when I adopted them!

Scarecrow started off as a very shy kitten but grew up to be an affectionate cat that will come to me whenever I call him. On the other hand, Ninja was a touchy kitten but grew up into a moody and alwayshungry cat; he's kind of like a 16-year old me!

Although they can be very different from each other, I love them equally! (My parents like to say that they are not biased as well but my dad is actually more attached to Scarecrow while my mom is attached to Ninja) My social media is tagged

ey everyone! I hope everyone is having a great time being back at school! August was extremely successful with MJ’s Animal Rights Month. Seeing everyone attend the Official Animals Rights March and participate in events like Changing the Present inspired me to attend more events. I cannot wait to see what the future holds and meet all the new members who will be joining our Key Club community this Fall. The executive board and I have been working hard to ensure that this will be the best service year yet(sorry past boards)! We will be continuing the Themes of the Month with Ayan hosting events October and hosting a interclub event with Key Clubs from other schools, so stay active!

H

ey everyone!

It's been a thrilling summer, but as it winds down, key club fun spikes up. As we all get back from our summer adventures, we can look forward to so many meaningful and outright fun events this school year! Personally, I'm really excited for Fall Rally because that's when all of us as key clubbers can come together as one.

This summer, although busy, was full of tremendous accomplishments. After watching the Brooklyn Tech Animal Rights month unfold, I realized one thing is for sure: despite being busy, key clubbers always find it in their hearts to give back and make change. And that was evident in the turnouts at all events and the active participation in advocacy efforts. I'm so proud to say that I'm a part of this amazing organization.

Let's keep doing what we do this school year. I expect so many great things from our awesome club. Best of luck everyone!

What Are "Themes of the Month"?

Inspired by our District Governor Erica Swirsky, Brooklyn Tech Key Club will be choosing contemporary issues as the themes of the month and hosting volunteering events and workshops pertaining to that topic. This way our members will do more meaningful work and support causes they are passionate about.

How YOU can participate: We are currently looking for other leaders to host themes of the month!

Whether it is climate change or world hunger, if you are passionate about the topic and want to teach your Key Clubber about it, contact April Su at pres.thetechkey@gmail.com to claim a month!

The Animal Rights March had many people, each with their own signs, slogans, and even costumes. Everyone was interacting with one another and everyone was being considerate and friendly towards one another. They’re was a few speeches updating about animal rights and the several efforts that were being made around the city

to liberate animals around the city, such as the horse carriages. The march itself was quite a long march, from 23rd st, all day the way down past Union Square Park. While it was long, no one quite noticed how long it was by all the positive and hyped up energy that everyone was displaying. It was overall quite a fun event, seeing everyone so elated and energetic, fighting for their cause of animal liberation.

CHANGING THE PRESENT

The office desks were littered with papers and notebooks. Interns scurried around, creating promotional videos, fixing the website, or adding charities to a spreadsheet. As I searched up non-profit organizations to add to the site’s directory, I thought about all the animals we would be helping through Changing the Present.

Changing the Present is an organization dedicated to creating a new type of giving.

To expand on this, they have created a website in which

users can ‘shop’ for nonprofits they are SUNEHRA passionate about and the user’s friends SUBAH can donate to said nonprofits. This is a meaningful alternative to giving a friend a t-shirt or a mug for their next birthday. The 450 billion dollars that Americans spend annually for such gifts can now be used to provide unhealthy cats with sanctuary or to help a person in Bangladesh get eye surgery. I knew I was only one volunteer in an office filled with many more, but I truly felt like I was making a difference.

There were only four people for the event, two from tech. The event was suppose to start at 5, but Charlotte, the person in charge of the event, arrived late around 6. She gave us the background story of how there are too many homeless cats in Astoria, and showed us how to package the food. We organized the cat food by flavor, and the amount varies depending on the amount of cats in each part.

August has been an exciting and stressful month for me and I’m sure for all of you as well! I know a lot of us saved their homework until the final days before school, the anxiety we get before receiving our schedules and readjusting our sleep schedule is all part of the fun of being a teenager! This month consisted a lot of planning and failure and it’s taught me a lot of how to rise from the ashes and making the most out of a situation that didn’t work in your favor. In all I’ve had a splendid experience, volunteering with my key clubbers, celebrating ones birthday after an event, and even getting down to chat for mere hours after an event is over is part of the reason why I love key club so much and I hope you all do too! Look forward to great things for the month of September and important news from the shark line!

Key Club International NEWS & EVENTS

A lot has happened with The Eliminate Project this summer. Here are the top three developments you might have missed – plus the latest information about Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF.

2017-18 INTERNATIONAL AWARD RECIPIENTS

The Membership Update Center (MUC) will be closed from August 13 – September 4, 2018. During this time, clubs can still contact member services at memberservices@kiwanis.org to update membership records and pay dues. Membership supplies will not be shipped during this period and will resume on September 4, 2018. On September 4th, the MUC will also open for the 2018-19 year and active clubs will be able to update membership records for the new year and begin receiving new member supplies.
