Letter from the Director Dear Arboretum Friends, It is with an extremely heavy heart that I provide my final Director’s Letter for the Arboretum Newsletter. I have become extremely fond of many of the volunteers, members, and staff that I have worked with the past year and a half.

Without the help of volunteers and members like you, we would never had made the incredible improvements here that we accomplished this past year.

Our volunteer base covers many areas: rosarians, master gardeners, tour guides, help with advertising, grounds, events, visitor center, and serving at the welcome desk. I will miss all of you and want to wish each and every one of the volunteers' good luck in the future and a hearty thank you for all your help here at Boyce Thompson. I will miss each and every one of you, volunteer and staff alike, and will remember you fondly.

I know you will join me in welcoming Lynne Nemeth, who joins Boyce Thompson July 1, 2019 from the Arboretum at Flagstaff, where she served as Executive Director since 2012.

I know that Lynne will be able to continue the growth that we began and complete some of the projects left unfinished.

One of my favorite memories here at the Arboretum was working with Dr. Jean-Francois Therrien from the Hawk Mountain Organization, where vulture migration patterns have been studied for the past 15 years or so. We radio-tagged four adult turkey vultures and one juvenile at Hill House last fall. I hope the Arboretum will be able to continue this study with Hawk Mountain. The five turkey vultures from BTA made it quite far, most settling in central Mexico, but one flew all the way to southern Nicaragua!

Although I don’t have a current map of their travels back to Arizona, I’m sure they are here! Keep your eyes trained on the skies and maybe you’ll see one of our radio tagged vultures flying around the park.

One of my proudest accomplishments was the Magma Mine Photo Exhibit that gives historical representation of Boyce Thompson’s mining career here in Superior, Arizona. I worked with Resolution Copper and the Town of Superior to put together this one of a kind retrospective. We have had many visitors come check out the park after visiting the exhibit, and an equal number check out the exhibit on their way out of the park. I hope that this sort of collaboration with our members and partners continues in the future.

Dear Arboretum Members, My name is LeRoy Brady and I’m the Chairman of Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum’s (BTA) Board of Directors. I am writing to you because we know you care about BTA and want you to be aware of important changes that are taking place here.

First and foremost, as the BTA board of directors, we are thrilled to welcome our new Executive Director, Lynne Nemeth, to the Arboretum. Lynne brings with her a wealth of experience in non-profit management, arboretum experience, and a variety of relationships with key partners that will serve the arboretum well into the future.

Lynne "fell in love" with BTA when she walked through the gate, and shares our passion for making this beautiful place the best it can be for the future of Arizona and desert plants.

Please join us in welcoming Lynne; she will officially join us on July 1, 2019.

We also want to thank Gaylyn Yanke, our Interim Executive Director for her service, recognizing her as she joined the Arboretum at a time of change and did her best to keep the wheels on the bus, which we are forever grateful for. Thank you Gaylyn!

As you may know, BTA was created for the public by Col. William Boyce Thompson and opened in 1929. For 35 years, it operated as private, non-profit entity. In the mid 1960’s, BTA signed a Cooperative Management Agreement (tripartite agreement) with the University of Arizona Board of Regents (UoA) and Arizona State Parks (ASP) to jointly manage the facility. Combining forces was viewed as the best path to success.

The thought was that the three organizations would work together to put BTA in a stronger position financially and to better execute its mission of research and education. This arrangement worked well for some time, but had inherent weaknesses.

Faced with these realities, and after much discussion and debate, the Board of Directors has decided the best alternative is to dissolve the formal tripartite agreement and operate as an independent institution... going back to our roots, so to speak. This is the way that most botanical gardens and arboretums function. To meet this aim and build a strong future, the Board gave six months’ notice to all parties that the current agreement would be dissolved.

This will take place on June, 30 2019.

Please understand that in no way does the Board want to completely sever its relationship with either UoA or ASP. On the contrary, we believe there are still areas in which joint efforts will lead to mutually beneficial results.

Our talks with the UoA have been cordial and fruitful, and they are working to make the transition as smooth as possible. Discussions with ASP have been delayed because of a recent change in leadership. However, we will be talking with the new Director soon and are hopeful of a more amiable and productive relationship in the future.

As BTA moves forward, we believe we have a fiduciary responsibility to consider mutually beneficial alliances with other research institutions, agencies, corporations, foundations or

donors where BTA retains sole ownership and control of our unique gem in the Sonoran Desert.

What does all of this mean for you? Please continue to support BTA, and especially our dedicated staff as we move through this transition. We plan to make the change as seamless as possible so that your experience within BTA remains positive and fulfilling. We anticipate most current employees will remain, and we hope to refill some positions that have been vacant for a while.

Can you play a part in this transition? Absolutely!

First, come to visit BTA, often! Our staff loves to see and interact with you. They are proud of the Arboretum and enjoy sharing it with you. As with most change, however, the future can be scary and some employees are understandably nervous. Seeing that people still support the Arboretum will ease those fears.

Second, give us feedback as well as your ideas as we move forward. If you notice something good or something bad, let us know. Tell the staff your thoughts about the Arboretum. Write us a letter (or email) if you have an idea that you think will improve the facility.

Finally, we need and appreciate your ongoing financial support now more than ever! In the months ahead we must replace certain old or relinquished equipment. The separation will result in immediate loss of certain equipment on long term loan including our irrigation system trailer mounted compressor (365 cfm), a dump truck, a steel storage building and several golf carts. BTA is a nonprofit 501(c)(3). Perhaps some of our members have lightly used, good condition equipment that they would consider donating and taking a tax write-off?

Then we hope to tackle vital infrastructure needs in the years ahead. Unlike more passive parks, BTAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s operations are not solely funded by admission, membership, gift shop, and plant sales. With your help we will attract new members and grow our modest endowment to insure that BTA remains financially solvent. Our members are key. We hope some of you will find it possible to increase your level of support in terms of membership, introduce others to BTA, and consider various forms of philanthropy.

As we move toward our 100th anniversary, the Board of Directors wants you to know that the future for BTA is bright. This is an amazing world-class garden set in one of the most spectacular settings of any public garden in the world. The addition of the 4,500 Wallace Collection specimens to the already extraordinary existing plant collection will bring new visitors to our grounds and provide new experiences to our existing loyal patrons.

BTA has a dedicated, knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. And, crucial to its success, BTA has wonderful members who love to visit, and a cadre of truly extraordinary volunteers who add so much to the variety, quality and richness of programs and services offered. This combination is unbeatable!

MEET OUR NEW

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR!

Lynne Nemeth

L

ynne Nemeth was appointed Executive Director of Boyce Thompson Arboretum in May of 2019. Since 2013, she has served as Executive Director of The Arboretum at Flagstaff, and prior to moving to Arizona in 2006, she served as Executive Director of the Howard County Conservancy, a land trust and environmental education center in Maryland. She has an extensive background as a nonprofit administrator, and has worked for environmental, health, human services, and arts organizations. She holds an M.M. in Music Performance, and an M.A. in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Endangered Species Policy.

Her work has included surveying for endangered plant species in Arizona, conference presentations for both the American Public Gardens Association and Botanic Gardens Conservation International on climate change education, and development of the Lawn Rebate Program for the City of Flagstaff.

She has researched and written special reports about philanthropy and presented papers about gray wolf (Canis lupus) conservation at national and international conferences.

Since 2016, she has been a columnist for the Arizona Daily Sun, writing about nature, gardening, and wildlife.

My name is Dr. Bobbi Lancaster and I’m a BTA volunteer and a director. Lynne Nemeth is our brand new Executive Director and she’ll be starting July 1, 2019. I’ve had the pleasure of taking her on a general tour and ever since, I’ve been asked the same question repeatedly: what’s she really like? My response always includes the fact that she’s really nice; is a certified venomous snake handler; has a magnificent voice and performs with choral groups; and my wife thinks she looks like a CEO. After discussions with senior staff, it was decided to introduce her by way of a brief interview.

Bobbi: “Hello Lynne. Thanks for agreeing to answer a few questions for our membership newsletter. Currently you are the Director of the Flagstaff Arboretum. How did you become involved in the management of botanical gardens?”

Lynne: “Years ago, when I lived in Maryland, I was hired as a consultant for a 262-acre conservancy and education center. Since I’ve always been a naturalist at heart, this job rekindled my love for the outdoors. When my husband and I moved to Flagstaff, the very first thing I did was sign up for the docent program at the Flagstaff Arboretum.

The ecology of northern Arizona fascinated me. After my first day, I still remember driving home and thinking that I want to work there—I was hooked. Before long, I was on their Board and then, when ‘The Arb’ experienced management issues, I was asked to step in as Executive Director. Working at an arboretum is the perfect job for me because I’m interacting with nature and plants; surrounded by beautiful environments and I am putting my non-profit management skills to work too. I feel so blessed.”

Bobbi: “Was working with nature your childhood dream, or did you have some other plans?”

Lynne: “I was going to be many things when I was a child— biologist; ballerina; pianist; primatologist. I actually turned down a scholarship to study primatology, at the University of Pennsylvania and went to music school instead—I was going to be an opera singer. Eventually, I ended up in arts management and then learned about non-profits. However, that old love affair with nature kept scratching at my door; I decided to get a Master’s degree in environmental studies. I was closing in on my truth.”

Bobbi: “What drew you to Boyce Thompson Arboretum?”

Lynne: “That’s easy. The place is breathtakingly gorgeous, complete with an extinct volcano and ancient lava flows along with a riparian area in the middle of the Sonoran desert. The Arboretum is like stumbling on a long lost treasure.”

Bobbi: “Obviously you are quite taken by the beauty of the garden. Now that you are getting more acquainted, is there something else that has caught your attention?”

Lynne: “I am impressed with the quality of the BTA staff and its volunteers. Everyone I have spoken with is in love with the place. They are, without a doubt, the greatest asset of the park.”

Bobbi: “Changing topics, I’m sure our readers would love to know how you spend your free time.”

Lynne: “Surprise! I love to garden, and I’m an avid reader— both fiction and non-fiction. I’m also a trained wildlife tracker and when I hike, I’m always looking for scat and tracks.”

Bobbi: “I can’t say I have a big interest in scat. However, I am curious as to what accomplishment you are most proud of.”

Lynne: “There are a couple of things. I’m the first woman in

my family to go to college. My father is a first-generation American from Hungary; my mother is second-generation from Poland. My family didn’t have a lot of money and I grew up in a community that included coal miners and steel workers; they were from Eastern Europe too. My parents wanted me to have more opportunities and they were adamant about the importance of an education.

There was never any question—I was going to college— and they were so pleased.

The other thing I’m really proud of occurred several years ago, when I served as the capital campaign manager for a new homeless shelter in Howard County, Maryland.

The project was incredibly controversial and the public discourse became ugly. I persevered and helped raise $5.5 million and the shelter opened in 2007. This was one of the great moments of my life.”

Bobbi: “You’ve told me about stepping in when there were management concerns at the Flagstaff Arboretum, and how you persevered in trying circumstances during the fundraising time of your career. Can you share with me a general strategy you employ to navigate these challenges?”

Lynne: “I have found the most important thing to do initially is to listen and learn. And keep listening and learning. For example, there are personnel who’ve been at BTA for decades. They know every rock, and plant and bird. I have to rely on their history and knowledge.

This requires that I meet with them—one on one—and the Board members too. Through this process, mutual respect is built and the feeling of being part of a team emerges. Team is an overused word, but teamwork is necessary to move any nonprofit forward. The other ingredient is love. We all share a great love for BTA and its mission, and it will be the basis for our work together.”

Bobbi: “These are powerful statements, Lynne. And now it’s time to wrap up the interview. Before I let you go, please take out your crystal ball and tell me what the Arboretum will look like in ten years, under your leadership.”

Lynne: “It will be even more gorgeous. Once the car is parked, a guest will walk toward the entrance and be stunned by the Sonoran desert vegetation, in all its diversity. The Visitor Center, with its sculptures and wall art, will remain the beautiful gateway to the park where they can first glimpse the beginning of the main trail.

Mystery and adventure will beckon as they proceed around bend after bend of old and new trails, while observing the museum of living plants posing in front of them. They will be in awe. The historic buildings, signage, benches and ramadas will look a little shinier, because of the loving care that the BTA staff has provided. Every tree, shrub and flower will appear equally loved too.

That’s what the future is going to look like.”

Bobbi: “Thank you very much, Lynne. After reading this interview, I think our members will feel like they know you. We can’t wait for your official start day to arrive.”

Desert Blooms The Ever-Changing Tapestry of the Seasonal Flower Show

Sonoran Desert can appear harsh and forbidding. Yet it is a place filled with life.

Months of intense heat and harsh sunlight without any rain turn the ubiquitous creosote bushes a somber brown. Many trees and shrubs lose some or all of their leaves. Saguaro cacti assume a gaunt presence. Prickly pear cactus segments become thin and may appear wilted. But these and other perennial plants, and the seeds of ephemerals are waiting for the proper conditions to return. Rainfall is the key. In years when sufficient rain falls a bewildering variety of wildflowers appear, sometimes covering the ground with carpets of color.

ARIZONA'S

Unlike most dry regions, much of the Sonoran Desert has two distinct rainy seasons. One rainy season occurs during the cooler months, and the other occurs during the heat of summer. There are suites of plants that are adapted to grow and flower during one or the other of these seasons, and some that are opportunists, able to capitalize on rain whenever it might fall. Many of the long-lived perennial plants including cacti and various desert trees and shrubs will flower even in dry years.

Other plants, especially ephemeral wildflowers, depend on specific timing and sufficient amounts of rain before they will germinate and flower. With adequate rainfall, there will almost always be something in flower at any time of year.

In addition to preserving many acres of rich Sonoran Desert vegetation, the Boyce Thompson Arboretum features a wide diversity of plants from dry regions across the globe. Each of these plants can add to the ever-changing tapestry of the seasonal flower show. This makes the Arboretum a premier destination to see desert plants in flower at any time of year.

If autumn rains materialize, we can be treated to a fiesta of color beginning in February or even January in mild years.

Among the native plants, the bright yellow of brittlebush flowers and the delicate pink of fairy duster flowers are joined by bladderpod mustard, Mexican gold poppy, lupin, mallow, desert chia, desert chicory, and a host of other ephemeral plants that contribute to the beauty of spring wildflower displays. Perennials such as penstemon, chuparosa, larkspur, desert zinnia, paperflower, desert

Nature marigold, blue dicks, salvia, and hibiscus contribute their hues. In March the hedgehog cacti with their spectacular pink to purplish flowers are blooming, followed by prickly pear and cholla cacti in April. Late March and April are also when the palo verde trees are covered with masses of yellow flowers. Both native species, blue palo verde and foothill palo verde are considered to be the state tree of Arizona. Ocotillo produces sprays of showy orange flowers at the ends of its stems. In late April and May, the saguaro cacti put forth their garlands of white flowers. The saguaro is the state flower of Arizona. Desert ironwood trees turn a dusty, pale pink with thousands of small, pea-like flowers in May. Various yucca species may flower from late winter into June. Among the nonnative plants, many aloes and eucalyptus flower during the cooler months along with a variety of Australian cassias and acacias. Australian bottlebrush species come in to flower in spring and can continue flowering through

much of the year. By March, South American torch cacti begin to produce their magnificent flowers in an almost endless palette of colors. Red-flowered hesperaloe also begins to flower at this time and continues flowering through the end of summer.

Flowering subsides during the hot, dry weeks of June and early July. Most spring-flowering native species are ripening seeds. Winter-spring ephemerals have dried, leaving the next generation’s seeds to wait until ample rains begin the cycle anew. When the summer monsoon thunderstorms arrive, usually in July, the desert is transformed in a few days into a voluptuous riot of life as dormant plants put forth new growth and a new cast of flowers appears on stage. The summer flowering is not as awe-inspiring as that of spring. But it provides ample opportunities to marvel at the beauty and diversity of the natural world. Common flowers include datura, summer

It is a pleasure because I get to wake every morning and do what I love and pour my soul into creating something beautiful. It is also a privilege because with creating comes responsibility. My desire is to create a safe place where a viewer’s eyes can land and rest for a while. It has been said that the only two things that can pierce our hearts are beauty and affliction, and if this is so, we need a measure of beauty in our lives in equal proportion to our affliction.

My unspoken agreement with my collectors and fans is that I will always bring my very best to you. I will work hard to bring a measure of beauty to your world with all the ability God has given me.”

poppy, four-oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;clock, sunflower, and several morning glories. The native hibiscus species flower again, as do desert zinnia, paperflower, and desert marigold. Many shrubs flower at this time with cenizo, littleleaf cordia, lantana, bird-of-paradise, Turkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cap, and several cassias vying for the attention of pollinators and delighting those who venture out into the heat and humidity. Texas olive, which flowers through much of the year, can be especially floriferous at this time of year. Native cacti such as the fishhook barrel and fishhook pincushion wait for the first significant summer rain to produce their showy crowns of flowers. Even the jumping cholla, a seemingly inhospitable cactus that has a well-deserved reputation as a plant to avoid, produces delicate pink flowers through the summer heat. Many of these plants continue flowering into autumn if the monsoon is prolonged, or if the remnants of a hurricane from the tropical Pacific Ocean reaches the Sonoran Desert.

The desert is filled with endless wonders. At times these are subtle. But when the rains are generous, the desert can put forth stunning floral displays that transform the land into a lush garden of unsurpassed beauty. A visit to Boyce Thompson Arboretum at any time of year can broaden ones understanding and appreciation for the multitude of plants that have adapted to the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dry lands and delight the senses with their floral diversity and colors.

From a young age, she loved to sketch and paint. This was combined with a keen interest in the natural world through exploring the Arizona desert with her family. Although the desert may seem barren and colorless upon first glance, there is a vast spectrum of color in cactus flowers. Some of these flowers are small and take some searching to find, such as the flowers of many mammillaria species. However, others are so large and vibrant that they are impossible to miss, like echinocereus engelmannii, or the hedgehog cactus. These blooms have inspired her to paint and have given her an incredible opportunity to use the brightest colors in her pallet.

The Waggle Dance: A Communicative Dance of one of the World’s most Reputable Pollinators Text by Dara Heward Art by Clare Parkes

If there were a competition for the world's most reputable pollinator, honeybees would have a clear shot at first place.

Most likely, you’ve seen hundreds to thousands of bees throughout your lifetime. It's possible that you even ran from one during a summer picnic when they relentlessly buzzed around your soda can. If you take a walk outside, even for a little while, you're likely to see at least one honeybee. Or, if you’re lucky, you’ll see many flying around an array of flowers. How do bees go about selecting which flowers to land on out of the millions that bloom every year?

This is a question that has led many researchers down a deep rabbit hole of scientific experiments that explore how bees might see and navigate the world. While discussing topics of her research, Dr Gloria DeGrandi-Hoffman, a Research Leader and Location Coordinator at the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Carl Hayden Bee Research Center in Tucson, Arizona, told me, “I’ve been studying honey bees for many, many years and still feel like there is more I don’t know than I do know about them. There are still so many fundamental questions.”

Evolution has been playing matchmaker between bees and flowers for millions of years, forming one of nature's closest relationships. The type of relationship that flowers and bees share is considered a symbiotic mutualism, in which each species benefits from one another. It’s a game of give and take; the flower produces nectar and pollen for the bee, and the bee helps the flower continue the next generation of seedlings by pollination. Pollen and nectar are great food sources for bees. Pollen is a source of protein, vitamins, minerals, and lipids. Nectar is a source of carbohydrates that the bee can also use to make honey to form their hives and feed their young.

Once flowers start blooming, the foraging begins. Yet, how do these tiny insects get around in such a large world with ample food choices?

Dr. DeGrandi-Hoffman describes what foraging working bees look for, “Primarily [bees] are looking for a flower source where the resources are abundant, consistent in providing resource, and accessible that they can reach down and get nectar easily. This means that they are accessible to honey bees and not other flowers that are more accessible to butterflies, moths, and birds. [The flowers] also need to provide a good concentration. The more concentrated the resource is, the more attractive it is. To give you an example, apple trees are really attractive to bees because they have these open dish shaped flowers that the bee can walk from flower to flower to get full loads of nectar and pollen on relatively small branches of trees and flowers. This is in contrast to something like a melon where there are male and female flowers, so you have to go to separate flowers to get pollen and they are spaced apart so that bees usually have to fly between them.”

Bees have evolved to be some of the most efficient pollinators known to man. They are so efficient, in fact, that humans use them as the choice pollinator in agriculture endeavors over and over again. This is because they are easily manageable in bee boxes, and can be moved around. What makes them even more efficient is the fact that they are social insects that work in colonies.

The healthier a beehive, or colony, the more likely the bees can communicate food sources to each other. This communication results in a more productive pollination season and a stable population.

Although there are many ways that bees acquire efficiency, one example is that they adapt closely with multiple species of flowers over time, while also communicating systematically. Their intelligence as social insects have inspired and continue to inspire scientists. There are things we can learn from our little friends that can be applied to the human world.

Honey bee workers are able to send complex messages to each other using their great sense of smell and by chemically sending messages with pheromones. Dr. DeGrandi-Hoffman notes, “They communicate if there's a failing queen in the colony with odors or different pheromones.

They communicate if a colony is under threat and needs to be in a defensive mode with alarm pheromones.

They communicate if they don't have a queen. A lot of behaviors in a colony are chemically based.”

Bees also have a curious but remarkable dance they use to communicate with each other. Like an instinctual reflex, honey bee foragers use a balletic figure eight pattern full of vibrations and motion to communicate to each other through a dance called “The Waggle Dance.” According to Dr. DeGrandi-Hoffman, this dance is a behavior, “that bees have formed to communicate distance and direction of food sources to their nest mates.” This dance is communicating the source of pollen, nectar, propolis (tree resin) , new hive sites, or water.

Upon opening a beehive box, you can pick out a dancing bee out of the mosaic of the other honeybees quite easily.

She, the foraging honey bee, fans her wings rapidly, and dances in a figure eight motion. Her wings fan so fast, the translucent structure of them almost disappears. She follows the same directional line back and forth conveying her

Feature message to her hive mates, "this is the direction of the flowers I found, spread the message." She keeps the same constant angle while turning one direction, circling around, and then repeating this motion in the opposite direction. Her movements create a bilaterally symmetrical mirror-image, left and right halves if divided sagittally. Gravity creates her up and down directional constants, and the sun creates her solar compass. Bees know the sun’s position in the sky at all times.

Other bees watch as this dance is performed, angling their antennae in the direction of the performer.

One or two observers will join the dancer in the first circuit of the dance. During the return run of the dance, the follower(s) will touch antennae with the dancer. The corresponding dancers will follow her for a few circuits, then be guided to the resource.

Once resources are gathered, they then go back to the colony where they will verify the information as a reliable source. As more bees verify the information, the resources are then utilized for the colonies benefit.

According to Dr. DeGrandi-Hoffman, “A colony is composed of a laying queen, larvae, pupae (sealed brood), and adult bees of all ages.

Together, that's a colony of bees.

Bees thermoregulate their colonies, so their development times are very stable. As a worker she will be an egg for 3 days, larvae for 6 days, and in 12 days she will go through pupation and emerge. It’s a 21-day life-cycle to go from egg to an emerged adult bee.”

“Then, she will stop eating pollen and start doing things around the nest like cleaning and structure building. She will receive loads of nectar coming from bees that are foraging in the field. She will also help get those loads of nectar into the cells in the colony, help secrete wax to make cells if they are running out of room, clean up debris, and defend the colony.”

“When the bee is around about 3 weeks old, she will become a forager. After a few weeks as a forager, she will usually die somewhere out in the field. In the summertime, the average lifespan is 5-6 weeks. If it's winter time and its cold, however, they could live throughout the winter in a cluster for several months.”

It's a complex, yet simple life for the working honeybee. You live for the colony first as a nurse bee, then as a home bee.

Then, you finish off your life as a forager, living off of food from flowers, providing food by navigation of the sun, and working together for a common goal of survival. So, next time you see a bee buzzing around in the garden, imagine how their world looks and think about how much nature remains invisible unless you see it through the right pair of eyes. Try this experiment out: take an ultraviolet light and shine it at a flower. Can you see the nectar pathways? Bees see in ultraviolet light! This is another way bees are able to pick the best flowers with the most nectar. Want to attract more bees in your garden? According to Dr. DeGrandi-Hoffman, “Plant flowers!

Reduce the use of pesticides and household chemicals. Those two things could go a long way.” Also, look for flower mixes that bees love! Try a nuturing mix that includes Desert Bluebells, Desert Lupine, Desert Marigold, Golden Dyssodia, Goodings Verbena, Mexican Gold Poppy, Rocky Mountain Bee Plant, Sand Verbena, Yellow Mexican Hat, Yellow Bee Plant, and White Evening Primrose.

Although H.B. Wallace had an avid interest in desert plants, Mrs. Jocelyn Wallace was the rose aficionado. She began collecting in 1987, long before many rose cultivars were readily available. Of the 120 plants in the Wallace Desert Garden, twelve were left in Scottsdale. Out of those, only three cultivars are not now represented in the Demonstration Garden at Boyce Thompson Arboretum.

Most of the Wallace roses are hybrid tea roses, but we also have floribunda, grandiflora, miniature, rock roses, and climbers. “Tea” roses originated in China centuries ago. The name is derived from the fact that the fragrance of the flowers is reminiscent of the smell of brewing tea. The original tea roses were larger shrubs with big flowers that had weak “necks” so the flowers were always nodding down.

In the middle of February 2017, Boyce Thompson horticulturists and Native Resources staff dug up the Wallace roses, transported them to Boyce Thompson, and put them in the ground—all in one day. With mature plants such as these were, it is important to get the plants back in the ground the same day. Of our 118 rose bushes, there are 46 named cultivars and 26 unnamed Rosa species. Since they were planted, we have lost only three plants.

In 1867, Guillot of France introduced what would be the first hybrid tea rose. When most gardeners think of roses today, they are thinking of these hybrids, with their classic, long stems and perfect individual blooms that make for good cut flowers. They are hardy in Zones 4-9 and bloom repeatedly throughout the season. They usually grow to 4 to 5 feet tall and like all roses, prefer full sun. My favorite here is Rosa John F. Kennedy, introduced in 1964, with gorgeous white double blooms carrying a delicious, fruity-licorice aroma. Last fall’s bloom resulted

Another favorite is the Rosa Wildfire.

A vigorous grower and memorable cut flower, it provides dazzling blooms from late spring to early summer.

Wildfire™ starts off with classically elegant pointed, ovoid buds that are yellow with orange edging. Once they open, they reveal 35 thick, velvety petals of a rich orange with a glowing yellow reverse. For the most part, these 4-inch blooms appear singly atop long, sturdy, 16- to 20-inch stems, making them excellent, longlasting cut flowers. Wildfire™ grows to a mature size of up to 6 feet high and 3 to 4 feet wide, needing only welldrained soil in full sun, and removal of spent flowers in order to encourage re-bloom. Hardy in Zones 6-9.

Another favorite is the Rosa Gemini, the 2000 All-America Rose Selection winner. Blooms exhibit perfect form with distinctive color patterning that has deep salmon coloring at the edges through all shades of pink and creamy white. Gemini’s blooms reach 4 to 5 inches wide, borne on straight, strong 20-inch stems that help extend the flowering time by a few days. Highcentered and packed with 25 to 30 petals, the flowers unfurl slowly, their form perfect whether they are just beginning to open from long, plump buds or fully extended to reveal the play of colors washed across their splendid petals.

Expect this remarkable rose—both disease resistant and heat tolerant— to grow quickly into a well-branched shrub 5 to 6 feet high and 4 to 5 feet wide in the sunny garden, and to fill your vases all season long with memorable blooms.

Floribunda Roses were introduced in 1930. The original floribundas were the result of crosses of Hybrid Tea roses and an old-fashioned class of rose called Polyanthas. These are relatively compact bushes with excellent hardiness and disease resistance that produce large clusters of blooms. They are continuous bloomers and have the same color range as the Hybrid Teas. Floribundas will adapt to a wide range of soil and temperature conditions. They are great in containers, reaching heights of only 3 to 4 feet. They can be single or double blooms and come in a wide

Coral to orange in color, with pink edges, blooms turn more pink as the bloom matures. This variety also carries a delicate musky fragrance. The colors of Gemini™ are as soft and feminine as painted porcelain, yet the flowers are robust and the shrub very disease resistant and heat tolerant.

Gemini™ has been adopted as the rose of St. John's College, and can be found bearing that school's name, but home gardeners know it by its award-winning moniker, representing the time of year (June) it blooms most heavily.

One of my favorites in our garden is the Lagerfeld. There is no other color quite like 'Lagerfeld' in the rose garden, especially at twilight when the silvery highlights of the blooms seem to glow. 'Lagerfeld' is a lavender-mauve blend, with blue tones from its seed parent, Blue Nile®, and purples, creams, and pinks from its pollen parents, 'Ivory Tower' and 'Angel Face.'It has a powerful spicy-sweet scent.

Bred by noted rosarian Jack E. Christensen and released in 1986, 'Lagerfeld' was named for the fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, though it has also been marketed as 'Starlight.'

Wallace Desert Garden range of colors. My favorite of the Wallace roses is an All-American Rose Selections Award winner with chocolate-brown tones and hints of smoke, red and purple, Rosa Hot Cocoa™. It is a unique, very easyto-grow floribunda that offers fully double blooms 3½ inches wide.

Densely branched and very cold-hardy, this rose repeats all summer long, offering great waves of color for garden and vase.

Another favorite of this type is the Rosa Disneyland. This compact floribunda blooms from early to late summer. Disneyland’s 3-inch flowers open from pretty pointed, ovoid buds to reveal 30 to 35 perfectly formed petals, the brilliantly colored blossoms with copper, apricot, orange, and pink tones arising in small clusters with 5-inch stems that stand out boldly against the tall, upright, well-branched habit of attractive dark green foliage and perfume the air with a light, spicy fragrance. Reaching a very manageable size of 26 to 30 inches high and 20 to 24 inches wide, this rose is cold hardy, disease resistant, humidity tolerant, pest resistant, and heat tolerant. Plant Disneyland® in full sun in well-drained soil in Zones 5-9.

The grandiflora rose is a hardy cross between a floribunda and a hybrid tea. They have large blooms that are clustered on long stems, making them good for cut flowers. They have the same hardiness zones and also bloom repeatedly. They are normally without fragrance. The ‘Queen Elizabeth’ was the first grandiflora rose to be developed, and is one of the earliest introduced roses in the Wallace collection. Introduced in 1954, the Queen Elizabeth is a sturdy tall grower reaching 6 to 7 feet tall with lots of pink blooms.

One of my favorites in our garden is the Lagerfeld. There is no other color quite like 'Lagerfeld' in the rose garden, especially at twilight when the silvery highlights of the lavender-mauve blooms seem to glow. This grandiflora is notable for its large 4- to 5-inch flower size, its exquisite high-centered, exhibition quality form, and its powerful spicy-sweet scent. The blooms have the classic hybrid tea form, boasting about 30 petals and arising in great flushes all season.

Expect nearly a dozen blooms on every stem, for weeks of beauty and marvelous scent. Within a season or two, 'Lagerfeld' reaches its mature size of 4 to 5 feet high and 3 to 4 feet wide. Medium green foliage, glossy and substantial, keeps the shrub attractive from spring through fall in the sunny garden.

Climbing roses obviously need to grow on a trellis or arbor and can grow 6-20 feet in height. Canes can be tied in place for positional training. One such in our collection is the Rosa Blaze of Glory, introduced in 1995; it is a large double-flowered climber with quartered, double ruffled blooms, 4 inches wide, and occurring in large clusters. Blaze of Glory is heat resistant and able to retain its brightly hued blooms regardless of the weather. Coral to orange in color, with pink edges, blooms turn pinker as the bloom matures.

This variety also carries a delicate musky fragrance. This rose blooms from early to late summer and is hardy in Zones 5-9.

Miniature roses are perfectly formed roses, but range in height from 3" to 18". They are hardy and re-bloom easily, coming in all modern rose colors. They make excellent additions for small gardens and container gardens. We have one named cultivar in our collection, the Rosa Funny Girl. This miniature was introduced in 1982 by William Warriner, a cross between the Bridal Pink and Fire Princess. Light pink 2 inch clusters of blooms with a mild fragrance grow on a short 2-3-foot bushy shrub. Optimally grown in Zone 6 or warmer, this rose blooms continuously from spring to fall.

Preston Cox will be growing some of these roses from cuttings. If a cooler summer prevails, watch for Wallace rose varieties in the Spring 2020 Plant Sale. If it heats up, you rose aficionados will have to wait until the Fall Sale.

Native Seeds/SEARCH offers many wildflower seed choices for your garden. Seeds are available from our website and retail store in Tucson. We have favorite perennials such as Globemallow, Desert Marigold, and Parry's Penstemon. Colorful annuals include local favorites Mexican Gold Poppy, Desert Bluebells, and Arroyo Lupine. Mix and match your favorite varieties for a custom mix of shapes, sizes, and colors. There are also many mixes available designed for different regions or purposes like attracting butterflies. Mixes are useful because while wildflowers are simple to plant and maintain once they germinate and mature, they can be picky when it comes to conditions they may require that are out of human control. These conditions might include soil temperature or humidity.

It is why one year you may see a lot of yellows and oranges while another year you may see more purples and blues during Spring bloom. Mixes help ensure that you will see some color in your space.

wildflower prefer sunshine. Hand broadcast the seeds evenly. Mix with sand to ensure a more even distribution of seeds, which also provides a convenient way to mark the parts of the site where you have broadcast. Compress the area with your hands to cover the seeds with ½ inch or gently rake over some loose soil. If available, cover the area you seeded with a light layer of yard debris (leaves, grass clippings etc.) to make the ground look undisturbed as possible to camouflage the seeds from hungry birds that may be lurking.

To speed up your seed germination lightly water and keep the soil moist for the first few weeks. Most wildflowers prefer well drained soils so avoid water pooling on your site. Alternatively, you can wait for the winter rains. You will want to give your area a good soaking every few days if the winter rains are insufficient or late in arriving. Once established and blooming native wildflowers generally do not need much water.

Lastly, sit back and enjoy the colors that will come year after year around this time.

While enjoying your flowers remember that they also serve an important function for our ecosystem. Wildflowers provide food for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds and are important pollinators for native plants and are required for bountiful vegetable and fruit harvests.

Wildflowers are a great option to attract beneficial pollinators to your garden.

Planting wildflowers is easy and most will reseed themselves or are perennial giving you the benefits season after season. Choose a location in the sun as most

pring wildflower season is one of the desert’s most colorful periods. But planning for those multicolored displays in the spring requires planning in the Fall.

The prime time to plant spring flowers in the low desert areas of southern Arizona is during late September through early December.

Most spring blooming wildflowers benefit from the cold temperatures of winter and begin their life cycle when the winter rains come.
