Analog Devices Educator of Excellence Award
In the Learning Classroom, we show how teachers and students use laptops to support learning tasks and experiences. For widescreen presentation and interactive instruction, a whiteboard is deployed. A visualiser is used to magnify small objects of interest and to digitally record static or moving images. A new smart table is shown for use as an interactive learning centre where the table's interface is so intuitive that even the youngest of students can get started without instructions. Also presented is a personal computer housed in brightly coloured, kid-friendly furniture and equipped with educational software to help children learn and explore concepts in maths, science and language.

In the Learning Office, teachers can see how curriculum management and teaching tasks can be coordinated and delivered in a more productive and flexible way, including remote interaction with students at home.

The RDS Primary Science Fair provides a unique opportunity for 100 primary schools from all across the country to display their class projects during the three days of the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition. The Fair provides an exciting opportunity for these students to think about science in practical and fun ways and helps to develop their skills in communicating their interest and knowledge of science to others. This year's Fair promises to showcase the best of Ireland's primary school science projects. Drawn from the primary school science curriculum those in 4th, 5th and 6th class (Key Stage 2 in Northern Ireland) will have a range of projects on display reflecting both topical issues such as swine flu and climate change as well as more diverse themes such as stars, submarines and spiders. Each class group has been working actively on their projects since September and would be delighted if you came along to meet them so that they can explain more about the project work they have been doing. The RDS Primary Science Fair is part of the RDS Foundation's Science programme which aims to encourage young people to see science as provoking, challenging and fun. IT Carlow will be showing games developed by students on its BSc in Computer Games Development course . These will include award winning projects from national and international competitions . There will also be demonstrations of how computer games technology is also used for serious purposes in engineering and avionics courses at the Institute. IADT, Dun Laoghaire focuses on the creative and cultural industries and is a leader in digital media technology and content. It will showcase how the Institute works with technology and special effects . The Institute's design course in model making will show a life-size model constructed for the film industry. SCIENCE &TECHNOLOGY • Y4 Failte Ireland Stand 1 : Failte 'The Science of Cookery' by Failte Ireland While cookery has always been a science, the application of physics and chemistry is gaining more and more importance in the world of chefs. The most well-known and awarded chefs of today lean heavily on science to bring innovation to their dishes creating unusual sauces, emulsions and foams, experimenting with the use of savoury ingredients in desserts and sweet ingredients in mains, and also simply examining the exact conditions to cook meat to perfection.
There has even been a scientific discipline named: 'molecular gastronomy', defined as the application of scientific principles to the understanding and improvement of small-scale food preparation. Understanding the chemistry of flavour, the denaturing of food and the structure of food molecules all contribute to the success of a food business (tasty food!). Why add salt to water? Why can't I taste food when I have a cold? Why does roast chicken smell so good? The answer lies in the chemistry and science of cookery. Visit 'The Science of Cookery' by Failte Ireland to see a range of experiments and demonstrations, taking place throughout the day. These will include the work of organaleptic receptors (the role of smell in taste), the work of enzymes and the science of ice-cream. Failte Ireland is the National Tourist Development Authority - the government agency that provides support to develop and sustain Ireland as a high quality tourist destination. Part of Failte Ireland's responsibility within this remit is to help ensure that there are enough motivated, skilled people entering the tourist industry to meet its staff needs. This includes chefs, bar, restaurant and hotel staff, event managers, tour guides and product developers, to name only a few. Third level courses in the various areas of tourism can be taken at Skills Training Centres, Colleges of Further Education and Institutes of Technology throughout Ireland.

Stand 14: Tipperary Institute Tipperary Institute is a dynamic third level college with campuses in Thurles and Clonmel. HETAC accredited Honours Degrees are offered across a wide variety of areas including Computing, Games Design & Development, Software Development, Creative Multimedia, Information Technology Support, Business, Accounting and Finance, Marketing, Environmental and Natural Resource Management and Social and Community Studies. TI's stand at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition will feature exhibits on the Science of Computer Games. Stand 16 : Royal Society of Chemistry The RSC support the teaching of chemistry within the primary, secondary and post16 phases. Our resources and materials are sent free to schools and colleges in the UK and Ireland. We strive to modernise curricula and work closely with government , subject associations , professional bodies and learned societies to ensure a coherent approach to science education.
We encourage initiatives to attract students to the chemical sciences from all parts of society and raise awareness of potential careers. An advisory service and a variety of careers publications for students, parents and teachers are available. At HE level we promote diversity of course provision and have established a series of criteria to recognise and accredit a wide range of chemistry and other chemical science degrees. At the RSC stand we will be providing encouraging students to study Chemistry through interactive activities and giving careers advice to students, teachers and the public in general.

Stand 8 : Irish Center for Talented Youth *CTY Ireland runs university style courses for primary and secondary school students. Classes are run on Saturdays and in the summer. Subjects that can be studied include: Forensics, Veterinary Science, Legal Studies, Architecture, Psychology and much more. Foras na Gaeilge has a role in advising administrations, North and South, as well as public bodies and other groups in the private and voluntary sectors in all matters relating to the Irish language. 1 Stand 30: Pharmachemical Ireland PharmaChemical Ireland, IMDA, Industrial Products and FDII have come together to showcase a variety of interactive science and engineering activates. The aim of the stand is to encourage an interest in science and engineering and to understand the importance of these sectors for the Irish economy. Visitors to the stand will have the opportunity to get involved in a range of interactive activities and also receive a range of publications that are available for students, parents and teachers. Pharmachemical Ireland represents pharmaceutical and chemical manufactures, employing 24,000 over half of the employee are third level graduates in Science and engineering. FDII represents the interests of over 150 food and drink manufacturers and suppliers in three main sectors: Consumer Foods, Dairy, and Meat. The industry has an output of almost €20 billion with 110,000 people employed in the sector throughout the country.

Stand 28 : Restored Hearing The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in the RDS in January signals the end of the long process of research, testing, submission, report writing and preparation for judging. However it can also be the start of a whole new adventure in the world of science, technology and even business. In 2009, our physics project, 'The Sound of Silence - An Investigation into Low Frequency Therapy for Tinnitus Sufferers', discovered a breakthrough therapy that alleviated the irritating ringing in your ears that you get after a concert or disco. Effective in one minute and with a 99% success rate the therapy was unprecedented and so we won the Runner-Up Group prize and the Health Research Board Award for Medical Innovation. Following our success two of the group members, Rhona Togher and myself, Elmear 0' Carroll, and our former mentor, Anthony Carolan, founded and became the directors of Restored Hearing Ltd. to develop and market our sound therapy. After getting through the small matter of the Leaving Cert. we spent the summer designing websites, testing sufferers of permanent tinnitus, securing funding and a whole host of other activities that we could not have imagined just a few short months earlier. We are now selling our therapy to sufferers of temporary tinnitus around the globe on our website www.restored hearing. iewhile still studying and teaching physics in Dublin, Edinburgh and Sligo respectively. We believe that science and business are very closely linked and ideas that you have just completed projects on will be the technological advances of the decades ahead. The Young Scientist experience is one of those memories that you will have forever and it may convince you that a career in science and technology is for you. We've certainly found that work in science, technology and business is constantly changing and always stimulating.

Stand 34 : Science Foundation Ireland Research for Ireland's Future Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) is investing in scientific and engineering research underpinning the Biotechnology (BID), Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Sustainable Energy and Energy Efficient Technologies sectors in the third level institutions in Ireland. SFI supports the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in order to promote the benefits of investing in scientific and engineering research to young people and the general public and to encourage young people to consider undertaking research careers in science and engineering.
SFI Speakers for Schools SFI strongly encourages the researchers it supports to visit primary and secondary schools to give talks on their own research, on more general science and engineering topics or on careers in science and engineering. IRISH MEDICINES BOARD
Stand 36: IMB The Irish Medicines Board's ( IMB) role is to protect and enhance public and animal health through the regulation of medicines, medical devices and healthcare products. As the state regulatory authority, the IMB aims to ensure that all medicines and medical devices which can be purchased here are safe for public use. The safety of these products is continuously monitored and this includes the inspection of manufacturing and distribution facilities. Before a medicine can be sold in Ireland, it must also be authorised by the IMB. Medicines must be safe, effective and of high quality.
The IMB also offers advice in relation to the safety of medicines and other healthcare products. In particular, it highlights the dangers associated with buying medicines on the internet where products have no guarantee of safety or quality. At the IMB stand you can have the opportunity to witness and take part in experiments and demonstrations which show the difference between real and fake medicines. There will be an incubator testing zone where you can test for the presence of poisons and pesticides in counterfeit medicines. You can take a walk through the IMB's 'Journey of a Medicine' tunnel which gives information, facts and visuals on the different stages involved in developing a medicine. There is also an opportunity to win some great prizes including mobile phones and Nintendos - so come along and learn some new facts about medicine and see if you can tell the difference between an approved medicine or a fake!
Stand 36a: ReachaTeacher.ie Reach a Teacher is a new concept in online education never seen before in Ireland. It is a very user friendly and Ireland's only one to one online tutoring service which any one with a computer and access to the Internet can use. We are currently offering tuition and instant homework help with maths, physics, chemistry and biology to cater for the junior and leaving cent courses. During 2010 we will be introducing other subjects for Secondary school together with the Primary School and Third Level Programmes. We aim to showcase this new service at the exhibition and will demonstrate our live on line service and look forward to inviting members of the public to participate over the three days of the exhibition. Beginning in June 2010, DCU is offering a Summer College for Second Level Students in fourth and fifth year of Secondary School. Students will have an opportunity to get a taste of University Life for two weeks over the summer, including taking courses and living independently as well as participating in sporting and recreational activities. Discover Science & Engineering brings the Science of Sport to the BT Young Scientist Exhibition in 2010. Visit the Discover Sport stand in the World of Science & Technology to find out about the science behind Formula 1-see the F1 Ferrari car and find out if it's possible to drive a Formula 1 car on the roof of a tunnel. Watch athletes being put through their paces on fitness equipment by the School of Health & Human Performance from Dublin City University. Discover Primary Science staff will demonstrate a number of the activities from the DPS activity pack and Steps to engineering will have information and advice in relation to careers in science and engineering and details of the programmes they offer.
