'Winning the title of Aer Lingus Young Scientists of the Year, the ultimate accolade of one of the events of the Irish scientific and educational calendar was a dream fulfiled for us and a huge honour, especially because it seemed more remote since this was our first entry and our school had already won in 1993. The tale of our first Aer Lingus experience began in September 1994, when we began work on our project. It continued until

The exhibition itself was staggering, with 40o hundred projects in all - one of the largest such fairs in Europe. The competition was tough and we found ourselves, like many others, wandering around trying to pick a winner. Anyway, win or lose, we were determined to enjoy every minute of the trip to the exhibition. The announcement of our win was overwhelming . The reception from everyone , especially

all the other exhibitors, was deafening, and amazing, as we had only met our fellow young scientists just three days before! Over the next few hours, we struggled to get used to the kind attention of TV celebrities, politicians and President Robinson who all came to congratulate us. I mean, if you want to see famous names and faces, this is the event to come to! The overall impression gained by us was everyone's delight and goodwill for us: past winners, Aer Lingus' Chief Executive Gary McGann, friends from home who subsequently came to see us, and of course, all the other exhibitors. The reception we received on arriving home was as celebratory as the one we experienced in Dublin when our success was announced. The local press ran several articles on our victory, and indeed at one stage The Newry Reporter seemed empty without a mention of'the scientific duo'!

It must be said that our success can be attributed, not only to our teacher Gerard Hughes, but also to the help and advice given to us by Rodger Toner and Donal Keane, past pupils of our school and 1993 Aer Lingus Young Scientists of the Year. Rodger and Donal went on to win at the EU Contest for Young Scientists in Berlin and then travelled to take part in the International Science and Engineering Fair in the USA. Needless to say, this will be a hard act to follow.

'This research week in the Swiss Alps was organised by 'Schweizer Jugend forscht' for twenty-four young scientists from all over Europe. We spent the initial two days in Zurich during which time the group went river-rafting. Taking the train from Zurich to Morel, in the south-western corner of Switzerland, we eventually arrived by cable-car in Riederalp. From an Irish perspective, it is difficult to describe the Alps on paper, in a manner that does it justice. We stayed in a villa built by Peter Cassel, circa 1910, who was a wealthy English banker. Even though the villa was at a height of 2o8om, at the beginning of the week it took some time to adjust to seeing snow at 25° C! The research week was a hard-working and stren-

Our prizes included an award from the Electrical Engineers of Ireland and one from the Irish Business and Employers Confederation. Our main prize, however, as the Runner-Up Group in the exhibition, was a trip to Canada, to represent Ireland at the International Science and Engineering Fair, which we attended last May. The ISEF is the 'World Cup' of Science and Engineering Fairs, with 1,000 projects on display from 34 countries and most of the US states and Canadian provinces. Our project consisted of a

piece of equipment, named CAISAM, that was designed to take any computer image, for example a scanned image, and create a three-dimensional model of it in a material such as wax or plastic. For a test, we took the profile of a person's face and were very successful in being able to model it into wax. All the hardware and software was built collectively by our team. The system is built to be a milling machine for use in schools or light industry. We built the system for £30o and were given a market value of f700, which is a considerable saving on a

small training mill which would cost at least £1,ooo. Aer Lingus flew us and SAM, as our milling machine came to be known, to Canada, and Westinghouse supported us while we were there. We were entered into the Team Projects section, and despite some stiff competition, won three international prizes: first place in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, third place in Manufacturing Engineering and first place in the Team Projects Category. But more was to come. We were announced as one of

three joint first place winners and will be attending the International Contest for Young Scientists in Chile later this year. We had a very surprising but wonderful time and none of us can really believe just how well we did. The experience will certainly help us in the future when we all go our separate ways.'

The synchronisation of biological fireflies has intrigued biologists for many years and has, in more recent times, become an area of active research for mathematicians. These fireflies are to be found in southeast Asia or the Pacific, and on occasion, up to a tenth of a mile along a river has been lit up with fireflies all flashing at the same time, which must be a fantastic spectacle. The male fireflies flash in unison to allow the female to compare the intensity of their flashes for the purpose of choosing a mate. lust over a year ago, electronic fireflies were designed to simulate this behaviour. My project did an analysis of two electronic fireflies and their interaction with one another. I constructed two such fireflies and hooked them up to a computer in order to read in voltage values and

I compared the results with the electronic fireflies and from the computer simulation and found that the results were consistent. Confident that my simulation was accurate, I was then able to gather more delicate results from the computer simulation. Finally, a mathematical analysis of the mathematical formulation gave an explanation for

the results from the electronic fireflies. This analysis also made predictions which I then tested and verified, in turn, with the computer simulation. From this, I developed a mathematical model of the flashing of the fireflies that was more realistic than those previously proposed. I very much enjoyed working on this project and got great satisfaction from seeing how completely different branches of science (biology, circuit theory, mathematics and computer science) can be used together to better understand a problem from the natural world.'

'The week of the Aer Lingus Young Scientists exhibition was brilliant. Even if we didn't win a prize, it would have been very worthwhile. The discos, films and quizzes made it very easy for everyone to mix with one another, and to make friends. Getting there was an achievement in itself. Serious dedication and hard work got us there in the end, especially during the last two days before the exhibition, when a system problem meant we lost our whole project report and had to re-input it from scratch! During the Opening Ceremony, we were clapping for all of the

The last day of the exhibition was very sad, having to say goodbye to everyone, but thanks to letters, a lot of us still keep in touch. Special Features of the Exhibition The Irish Innovators In a co-operative venture with Aer Lingus, Forfas, the government agency which is the advisory and co-ordination board for industrial development and science and technology in Ireland, have commissioned this exhibition which celebrates the work of Irish scientists of the last four centuries. Science in the Primary Classroom The following four primary schools, selected and supported by the Department of Education, show the kind of experimental scientific work being carried by some 10-12 year old children in these schools: St Patricks, Greystones, Co Wicklow 'We Shone a Light on the Sun' A study of light and its effects. The children have also carried out tests on heat and examined aspects of radiation.

The Age of the Ocean has Begun - by The Marine Institute The Marine Institute displays equipment form the marine research vessel 'The Lough Beltra', including a Remote Operating Vehicle (ROV - an unmanned submarine) which allows visitors to see video footage of the sea bed previously recorded on a research cruise. It will also include some exploration of the Industries Hall and observance of various young scientist life-

Where Are They Now? The exhibition that has launched a thousand young scientists documents the success of the holders of the title Aer Lingus Young Scientist of the Year for the last 32 years. From industrial chemists, geologists, managers of research programmes to undergraduates of astro-physics, the past winners of this exhibition represent a wide range of exciting scientific fields.
