We feel very privileged over the years to be able to give a platform to these searching, probing young minds who readily surmount the obstacles in the way of their research with freshness of view, great determination and innovation. We have seen science and technology grow in Ireland over the last three decades and with it the skills and development of our young people. Research and development in Ireland has grown to become a thriving industry employing 4,000 people today. The Aer Lingus Group has blazed the trail in the development of technological expertise in the Irish aerospace industry, using the most technologically-advanced aircraft and sophisticated methods of training. Aer Lingus sees an essential role for itself in being part of a process that encourages change, renews itself and strives for new excellence. Aer Lingus, along with every other technology orientated industry, faces the future confidently with a scientifically orientated workforce to respond to the global challenges facing us. Young Irish scientists now have a reputation for excellence to defend internationally as each year sees the Aer Lingus Young Scientists receive recognition for their work in international contests. This commitment to excellence has become the hallmark of our young scientists. Organisations such as Westinghouse Electric Corporation, the European Union and the Young Research Foundation of Germany make these international opportunities possible.

his 30th Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition is a very proud occasion for Aer Lingus. The decision to hold this special anniversary exhibition was taken

against a background of the most difficult year in the airline's history. The exhibition is important, not just to Aer Lingus, but also holds a special place in Irish society. From modest beginnings in 1965 in the Mansion House, the exhibition has grown in size, expertise, and is now widely recognised as a national forum for our school-going young people, in which they can present their scientific work to the country's most eminent scientists, industrialists and the visiting public.

Today, to a great extent, we accept modern technology as part of our lives without needing to explore or question the scientific principals that underpin them. The importance of the exhibition is that it challenges young people to continue to question everything around them, building on the advances already made in the field of science and technology, thus making scientific enquiry the key order of the day. The tremendous momentum that has led to the technological advances of today rely on the enquiring minds of our young scltnttlh In the following pages, you will see that the issues they address are global , contemporary and relevant to our everyday

The exhibition has been shaped by the contribution of so many organisations who respond in a very unique way to the young scientists and their work. EOLAS, the Irish Science and Technology Agency, who in a new initiative begun last year with us, are helping a number of young scientists test their projects in a commercial and industrial environment. We thank them for their endorsement of and support for the exhibition.

We gratefully acknowledge the efforts of our judges who carefully monitor and develop this event in order to help young scientists realise their aims and who select the worthy representatives for the international contests. Not least of all, special mention is required for the young scientists who are at the heart of the exhibition, and who have travelled here with their teachers and parents from every corner of the country to eagerly show us the results of many hours thought and scientific endeavour.

We hope that this exhibition will inspire you as it does us.

MARKING 30th ANNIVERSARY OF THE AER LINGUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS EXHIBITION

I would like to congratulate Aer Lingus and all the individual participants down through the years in the Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition. In previous years, having seen the exhibits, I have been greatly impressed by the skill, hard work and patience involved in preparing the projects. I believe that the exhibition offers a wonderful experience for any young person as they fulfil their interests while at the same time undertaking the discipline and application necessary for success in any walk of life. I had the pleasure, in 1993, of presenting the Young Scientist of the Year award to Rodger Toner and Donal Keane of Newry who went on to take first prize at the EC Contest for Young Scientists. This success represents not only individual excellence but is a source of pride and self-confidence for the whole country. I know that the Exhibition attracts many projects from Northern Ireland and in so doing serves to build bridges between the communities on this island. I note with great interest that for the future there will be support for the further development of projects with commercial potential. I very much welcome this initiative as I believe it is essential that our intellectual capital and the public investment we make in developing it are translated into economic growth. Rodger Toner and Donal Keane from Newry Co Down, the 1993 Aer Lingus Young Scientists of the Year, won a top award of £4,000 in the European Community Contest for Young Scientists in Berlin . They are to represent the European Community at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Alabama in May. They are currently studying for their A Levels at the Abbey Grammar School in Newry.

Gavin Hurley , from Cork, who is the 1993 Best Individual Winner, won a Grand Award in New Orleans at the Westinghouse International Science and Engineering Fair, Gavin is currently on a year-long cultural and educational exchange programme in Germany. He returns to Cork next year to study for the Leaving Certificate.

Christopher Swift , Colin Walsh and Ian Ellis from Dublin won a Fifth Prize at the European Environmental Contest in Dresden last November. They are all currently studying for the Leaving Certificate at the High School in Rathgar, Dublin.

HIGHLY COMMENDED AWARDS Some 100 prizes for projects that are highly commended by the judges. The prize fund for 1994 will amount to f15,000. This includes cash prizes and trophies, school and teacher awards, travel to science fairs in Europe and the United States and mementoes for all participants. The following awards will be made, provided that, in the opinion of the judges, the projects reach a desired standard.

Each participant will receive a certificate of display and a memento of their participation in the exhibition.

SPECIAL AWARDS TOP AWARDS 1

Young Scientist or Scientists of the Year The premier award winner will receive the Aer Lingus silver trophy plus f1,000. The winner will represent Ireland at the European Science Contest in Luxembourg.

Best Individual or Best Group Will receive the Aer Lingus prize of f500 and a Certificate of Distinction. The winner will represent Ireland at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Birmingham, Alabama. The trip is sponsored by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation who also present a trophy to the winner. Runner Up Group and Runner Up Individual Will receive the Aer Lingus prize of E300 and a Certificate of Distinction.

The following prizes will be distributed among the top four winners, depending on the final placings: Entry to the Young Europeans Environmental Research in Germany where the selected students will represent Ireland. A trip to the European Space Agency in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, sponsored by EOLAS, the Irish Science and Technology Agency.

In addition to the general awards in each category a number of special awards are being offered through the generosity of the sponsoring institutes and organisations listed here. These awards include medals, trophies, job experience and visits to see science at work. Institution of Electrical Engineers

CATEGORY AWARDS There is a section for individual projects and another for group projects. (Group and individual projects do not compete with each other except for the top award). Each section has three categories - Biological and Ecological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematical Sciences and Social and Behavioural Sciences. Within each category there are age divisions - Junior, Intermediate and Senior. First, Second and Third prizes of f90 (f120), f65 (f90), f50 (f80), will be awarded in each division (27 prizes for individual projects, and 27 for groups).

The Nicholas Callan Award for the project which displays the best understanding of electrical engineering principles.

The Institution of Engineers of Ireland One prize for a project in engineering with significant commercial potential. The Insurance Institute of Ireland Two prizes for projects dealing with safety or health. The Institute of Physics in Ireland Two prizes for projects in physics or applied physics.

DISPLAY AWARDS Prizes of f30 (f50) will be awarded to projects which are well presented. (9 prizes for individual projects, and 9 for groups).

Irish Computer Society Two prizes for projects using computers which include the writing of original software.

The Triff id Camera

A prize for the project that displays the most innovative use of school science laboratory equipment.

A special high-tech camera called the Triffid has equaled the NASA Hubble Space Telescope in terms of its ability to view broken-off pieces of exploded stars called pulsars. It has also outstripped the Hubble in tackling a whole range of other astronomy problems. The Hubble, which was built at a cost of 2 billion dollars, compares with the Triffid which was designed and built by University College Galway and Dunsink Observatory at a cost of f75,000.

The National Heritage Council Six prizes for projects that deal with the protection and preservation of the environment, in the areas of either archaeology, architecture, flora, fauna, landscape or inland waterways.

The National Rehabilitation Board Two prizes for a project which will contribute to the independent living and social, cultural and economic integration in society of people with a disability.

Sociological Association of Ireland Two awards for projects which best use the methods and concepts of sociology. Teagasc Agriculture & Food Development Authority

A prize for the best individual project on Agriculture/Food.

Rare Earth Magnets A magnet's unique abilities to store energy indefinitely in its magnetic field and exert magnetic forces have countless applications across the whole spectrum of modern technology, from the tiny ring magnet at the heart of a CD player to the large blocks used in magnetically-levitated transport systems. Many consumer products we take for granted would be inconceivable without the high-performance rare-earth materials that have been developed in recent years. Research in Trinity College led to the discovery of 'Nitromag' in 1990. Some of the novel permanent magnetic devices which have been developed there, including the Magic Mangle will be exhibited, with illustrations and an explanation of the underlying physics. The display includes some hands-on demonstrations and a magnet quiz.

Association of Secondary Teachers , Ireland An award for the school scoring the highest number of points on a points for prizes basis.

Molecular Biology Maynooth College Biology department displays research in a number of fields. The area of plant cell molecular biology has made some discoveries whereby a plant's molecular tissue can be 'rebuilt' in order to make it more resistant to insects, frost and salinity in the soil, thus improving crop yields. Parasitic insects called nematodes are being developed as natural enemies used for the biological control of insect pests, and human cell structure is being examined in relation to cancer and AIDS. Pathogenic yeasts are also being used to learn more about Candida albicans and other diseases.

Teachers ' Union of Ireland An award to the school from which a project is selected on the basis of integrated science.

Cara the Computer People

The winning school in each of the three main categories will receive a 386 SX Notebook Computer, complete with DOS, mouse, windows and printer, courtesy of Cara. The winning schools will be selected on the basis of points for prizes.

Last year, EOLAS and Aer Lingus selected a number of projects which had potential for further industrial and commercial development. During the last year, the young scientists and their projects were introduced to industrialists, manufacturers and the process whereby a scientific research project can become a marketable product in the industrial world. The projects were greeted with enthusiasm and we are pleased to report on the success of this initiative and to present an interim report on those projects which are close to commercial reality. AER LINGUS / MICROSOFT FLIGHT TRAINING SIMULATOR

IRISH MENSA

Now is your chance to see how an Aer Lingus pilot learns to fly a Boeing 737. Microsoft and Aer Lingus have joined forces to show you how Microsoft FS5 is used by Aer Lingus Flight Operations for use in their pilot training programme. Join the Aer Lingus crew on a flight around the country which takes off from Dublin Airport, cruises over well-known Dublin and Shannon landmarks such as the Bailey Lighthouse, Killiney Hill and the Shannon Estuary before coming into land again. Aer Lingus first officers, under the leadership of Mark McAllister, will be on hand to demonstrate Microsoft FS5 which is among the latest technology used in the Aer Lingus Flight Training Programme. Fasten your seatbelts!

Give your brain a workout with Irish Mensa. Not only will they test your IQ, but they will present you with an array of tests, puzzles and teasers that should tone up your thought-processing brain cells until next year's Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition. Pit your wits against young scientists, old scientists and the rest of the thinking world.

THE OFFICE OF PUBLIC WORKS Computer Aided Design is among one of the most recent technological advances made in the area of architecture, used by the OPW in both construction and renovation of buildings. The OPW demonstrates how the traditional methods of the drawing board, in preparing plans for the architect and calculating heating and lighting requirements, are efficiently superceded by technology.

SCI-FUN FUNdamental Physics are back, bigger and better, with lots of new exciting experiments. Come along and 'see' your voice on screen and investigate your musical talent. Tackle the problems of uphill gravity with the Rattle Back. Have you ever wondered what it feels like to cocoon yourself in a giant bubble?

Try designing your own split-level house with solar-panels and heated indoor swimming pool!

PREVIOUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS The last thirty years has been a long time in science. Here we proudly record the progress of the Aer Lingus Young Scientists of the Year since 1965. Many of them are involved in exciting areas of research that are making new breakthroughs and discoveries every day. Here is their story and an insight into their work.

There's eating and drinking in 'Electronic Soup' which is a bubbling, exciting cauldron of electronic devices and circuits with which to interact. Add a kilogram half a dozen VVL of microchips, Cameras that measure 2.5 square centimetres and a pinch of salt for the best pre-lunch appetizer in the RDS.

1993 INTERNATIONAL YOUNG SCIENTISTS In the wake of their international success, Aer Lingus Young Scientists who participated in international competitions this year have returned to the RDS with their prizewinning projects.

Talk to the electronic engineers and scientists from the University of Edinburgh who are involved in today's research for tomorrow's technology.

THE CHEMISTRY WORKSHOP Check out these exciting demonstrations on gases which allow you to handle hydrogen and oxygen gas in a balloon, turn oxygen into a blue liquid and even make fireworks with liquid nitrogen. Watch the chemical reaction that takes place when you burn methane bubbles. Listen to exploding propane bubbles and see how a rocket can be launched using the energy from an explosion. All this and much more.

STREET SCIENCE Why is the sky blue? What is the Black Hole? Watch out for UCD's Professor Alex Montwill and Michael Keely of RTE's 'Street Science'. They are on the prowl with sound recorders for unsuspecting young scientists, visitors and judges for answers to these thought-provoking questions. All will then be revealed on Sunday at 3.00 pm when we can hear a selection of responses and the definitive ones from Professor Montwill.

ENFO - THE ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION SERVICE A number of projects will be selected from the exhibition and invited to participate in a special exhibition entitled 'Aer Lingus Young Scientists and the Environment' at the ENFO Centre at 17 Andrew St, Dublin 2 for a number of weeks following the Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition. The projects will be chosen on the basis of scientific content and the promotion of environmental protection. Enfo is a public information service which provides free public access to information on all environmental topics. The aim of Enfo is to help protect and enhance the environment by promoting a wider understanding and fuller awareness of the world around us. Enfo is a service of the Department of the Environment.
