THE Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition aims to reveal science as the fascinating subject it can be when presented in a fresh and imaginative way. Courageously, and often with limited resources , our young scientists have tackled the stimulating scientific questions of how? and why? and why not?. Aer Lingus is proud to provide an annual platform for these young people to display their work to the public. The entries in this catalogue represent ingenuity, hard work and imaginative thinking. Many of the projects focus on people and on the effects of scientific applications as they relate to the environment and to the quality of our lives. Sponsoring an annual Young Scientists Exhibition which helps to develop the scientific and technical skills of young Irish people is particularly appropriate to Aer Lingus. The Company pioneered the use of advanced technology in its own business . Today, Aer Lingus subsidiaries export aviation expertise to airlines around the world and undertake specialised work for both aerospace and industrial projects. Ireland is now poised to become a global aerospace centre with companies such as TEAM, Airmotive Ireland and Parc Aviation being key players in developments which will see jobs increase to 12,000 by the end of the century. Having a highly skilled and technically educated young workforce is of significant importance in this national strategy. The Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition has pointed the way and given an opportunity to bridge the gap between school science and industry. We see the continuing sponsorship of the exhibition as an important contribution to raising the profile of science and technology and emphasising its importance in the economic development of Ireland. 4

Aer Lingus readily acknowledges that the success of the exhibition is due to the combined effort and dedication of many people . Our sincere thanks to Eolas for their practical support and endorsement of the exhibition . Our thanks to the Westinghouse Corporation and the European Community who sponsor our top winners to international contests. Special thanks is due to the RDS and to our many sponsors and supporters who are listed in this catalogue. We wish to pay special tribute to the panel of judges for the wonderful work they do in the development of the exhibition and in judging the projects. Finally , we warmly welcome this year's young scientists who deserve great praise for their efforts and dedication. We welcome too their parents and teachers who have supported them in the development of their work.

THE MAGICAL MATHWORKS TRAVELLING CIRCUS Experience mathematics through the senses with this exciting range of experiments which bring maths alive. Location: Main Hall THE LIVING HISTORY OF SCIENCE Sir Isaac Newton and Michael Faraday will visit the Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition. Come and listen to Sir Isaac as he tells you how he discovered Calculus and formulated the laws of gravity. Michael Faraday tells us about his design of the induction coil and dynamo and how these and his discovery of the relationship between magnetism and electricity made the electrical revolution possible. (Characters from The Living History of Science, Birmingham) Location: Main Hall TEAM Aer Lingus 'Hal' is the award-winning Halon gas recycling machine from TEAM Aer Lingus. Combining care of the environment with high technology, this machine enables TEAM Aer Lingus to repair fire extinguishers and recycle the halon gas contained in them, instead of releasing this harmful substance into the atmosphere.

Location: Industries Hall ENFO The department of the Environment provides a source of information on all aspects of the environment, and how we can care for it. Location : Main Hall OFFICE OF PUBLIC WORKS In 1990, the Commissioners of Public Works published "Heritage a Visitors Guide" an illustrated guide to 200 National Monuments, Parks and Gardens and Nature Reserves together with the Shannon Navigation and Canals systems. The publication proved very popular and it was decided 16

to put the information contained in it on touch screen computer to make it more accessible to a wider public. The multimedia presentation like the guide is on a regional basis. The user can select an area he or she is interested in by touching the screen and is then given a choice of sites, monuments, wildlife and parks to visit. The presentation uses text and photographs to provide an introduction to the site selected.

The Office of Public Works presentation is being piloted at a number of sites at Dublin Castle; Glenveagh National Park and Muckross House, Killarney; Glendalough Visitor Centre; Connemara National Park and at Coole, Co Galway. Location: Industries Hall PREVIOUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS You can trace the progress of 28 years of Aer Lingus Young Scientists from 1965 to the present.
