Foreword Ireland's contribution to scientific progress is firmly rooted in the past. We have produced more illustrious scientists and technologists than is generally realised. It is a source of great pride to Aer Ling us that Ireland's Nobel Prize Winner in science in 1951 is an Honorary Member ofthejudging panel. AstheAer LingusYoung Scientists Exhibition is oneof the first events of Dublin's Millennium celebrations, we thought it would be appropriate to paytributetosome famous Dublin born scientists and engineers in a design feature which can be seen in the exhibition hall. Given the tradition of scientific experiment in Ireland, perhaps the inauguration of the Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition in 1965 was both natural and inevitable. But nobody could have foreseen that the exhibition would develop at the pace it did. Each year it presents us with a staggering variety of subjects across the spectrum of scientific disciplines, and produces top winners who take first prizes in International competitions. The way in which the exhibition has evolved could only have taken place with the considerable assistance which is freely given to Aer Lingus in organising the annual event. I would like to thank our many sponsors listed in this catalogue for their generosity and practical help. In particular I wish to thank theTaoiseach and the Minister for Science & Technology for the grant being made available through Eolas-the Irish Science and Technology Agency. Our thanks to the Royal Dublin Society; the Commission of European Communities and Cara The Computer People. I wish to pay a special tribute to the panel of eminent judges who work closely with Aer Lingus in planning the exhibition and judging the projects. A warm welcome to the Young Scientists, to their teachers and parents. Aer Lingus is proud to present their projects to the public. I am sure that visitors to the exhibition will derive hours of enjoyment and enlightenment from viewing the exhibits.
