The first Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition was held in 1965. It was gpened by the then Taoiseach, Mr. Sean Lemass, and attracted an entry of just over a hundred students. Since then 10,000 young people have participated in the annual event, and in this our twentieth year we welcome 700 young scientists from all over Ireland. Aer Lingus is proud to be associated with the innovative projects and fresh ideas which are presented each year. We also recognise the talent, enthusiasm and valuable time invested in each project. Our young scientists have gained international recognition and success in the European arena at the Philips Contest; and last year, for the first time, we had a representative at the International Science and Engineering Fair in the United States. Our thanks to Philips Electrical Ireland and Westinghouse Electric for their valuable sponsorship to these exhibitions. Successful events such as this exhibition very often reflect the combined talents and generosity of many people. The Young Scientists Exhibition is no exception. On behalf of Aer Lingus I record sincere thanks to the following: The National Board for Science and Technology, for their support and practical help; the Department of Education; the Royal Dublin Society; and Cara The Computer People, for their assistance. Our thanks also to the scientific and professional Institutes who sponsor special awards. We list them and the many prize-giving organisations elsewhere in this catalogue. The exhibition would not be complete without the impressive feature displays by the National Board for Science and Technology, the Computer Education Society of Ireland and the Irish Science Teachers Association. A special welcome to the North Eastern Education and Library Board who are here to outline how computing and technology are introduced into the curriculum of schools in Northern Ireland. Our young scientists themselves will again have their own daily newsheet Young Scientific Citizen. In conclusion, I wish to pay tribute to the 200 teachers whose students are here today and to our eminent judges, without whose difficult and painstaking work the exhibition could not have achieved its success and value. David M. Kennedy Director & Chief Executive
