Foreword In Aer Lingus we derive much satisfaction from the knowledge that thousands of students in all parts of Ireland spend valuable time and effort in preparing an exhibit for the annual Young Scientists Exhibition. Eighteen years ago when Aer Lingus launched the exhibition it was envisaged essentially as a competition within schools. Since then over 10,000 young people have participated in the annual events. Each year has brought its own enormous range of imaginative work and worthy winners. Now our young scientists compete in the European arena and win top awards. And next year for the first time a top award winner will participate in the International Science and Engineering Fair in the United States - thanks to the generous sponsorship of Westinghouse Electric Ireland Ltd. Aer Lingus readily acknowledges that the success of the exhibition is due to the effort and dedication of many individuals and organisations. Our sincere thanks to the following: The National Board for Science and Technology for their support and practical help; Philips Electrical (Ireland) Limited who sponsor our young scientist to their European contest; the Department of Education; the Royal Dublin Society; and the Commission of European Communities. Thanks also to the scientific and professional institutes who sponsor special awards and help us to promote the exhibition. We list them and the many prize-giving organisations elsewhere in this catalogue. Once again we have impressive feature displays by the National Board for Science and Technology; AnCO (the Industrial Training Authority); and a joint display by Cara Computer Systems and Sord Computers. Young scientists will again have their own daily newsheet - Young Scientific Citizen. Finally, we record our appreciation to the panel of judges and to the science teachers in the twenty seven counties involved. To the young scientists we say welcome and congratulations on completing a science-project fors this major

There is a section for individual projects and another for group projects. Group and individual projects do not compete with each other except for the top award. Projects are grouped in three categories - Biological Sciences; Mathematical Physical and Applied Sciences; and Environmental and Social Sciences. These categories are subdivided into Junior, Intermediate and Senior sections (Junior 12-14, Intermediate 14-16, Senior 16-18), and projects are listed alphabetically in the sections. Note : Projects have been classified according to the descriptions supplied by the exhibitors. The judges reserve the right to transfer projects to a different category. The prize fund for 1983 will amount to £10,000. This includes cash prizes and trophies, school and teacher awards, travel to science fairs abroad and mementoes for all participants. The following awards will be made, provided that in the opinion of the judges, the projects reach a desired standard. TOPAWARDS 1. Young Scientist or Young Scientists of the Year A premier award of £500, a perpetual trophy and automatic entry to the Philips European Contest for Young Scientists and Inventors. This award will go to the most meritorious individual or group project in the exhibition. 2. Best Individual or Best Group Project £350, a perpetual trophy, and entry to the International Science and Engineering Fair in the United States (trip sponsored by Westinghouse Electric Ireland Limited). 3. Runner-Up Individual Project, £200. 4. Runner-Up Group Project, £200. CATEGORY AWARDS - Individual and Group Projects There is a section for individual projects and another for

group projects. (Group and individual projects do not compete with each other except for the top award.) Each section has three categories - Biological Sciences, Mathematical, Physical and Applied Sciences, and Environmental and Social Sciences. Within each category there are three age divisions - Junior, Intermediate and Senior. • First, Second and Third prizes of £80 (£120), £55 (£90), £40 (£65), will be awarded in each age division (27 prizes for individual projects, and 27 for groups). • Prizes of £30 (£50) will be awarded to projects which are well presented, (9 prizes for individual projects, and 9forgroups). • Some 100 prizes for projects highly commended. • Each participant will receive a certificate of display and a memento of their participation in the exhibition. SCHOOL AND TEACHER PRIZES 1. Schools of top award winners (four) will receive a plaque and £50 towards acquiring additional scientific equipment. 2. Token gifts will be awarded to teachers of top award winners and first prize-winners.
SPECIAL FEATURES AT THE AER LINGUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS EXHIBITION COMPUTERISED INFORMATION SYSTEM Cara, an Aer Lingus subsidiary, provided the computerisation support for the exhibition. This gave the organisers on-the-spot information retrieval and change facilities, enabling them to plan the many aspects of the exhibition culminating in the processing of results at the R DS. SCIENCE AND THE SEARCH OFFSHORE-A A Feature by the National Board for Science and Technology Location: Main Hall The display will demonstrate the role of science and technology in offshore exploration -from the first seismic sounding of the sea bed to the decision to develop a full scale oil or gas production area. The exhibit will also include information on career opportunities in the industry. AnCO ( The Industrial Training Authority) Location: Main Hall
INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS AWARDS Six prizes (3 individual, 3 group) for the best projects involving physics or applied physics.
AnCO will provide an information exhibit on the training facilities and opportunities available to young people. The exhibit will include practical demonstrations of the skills involved in instrumentation, electronics and motor mechanics.
INSTITUTE OF CHEMISTRY OF IRELAND - ROYAL SOCIETY OF CHEMISTRY will award two prizes for projects in chemistry or applied chemistry.
YOUNG SCIENTIFIC CITIZEN NEWSDESK Location: Main Hall
INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGY OF IRELAND will award two prizes for projects in applied biology. CONFEDERATION OF IRISH INDUSTRY will award two prizes for projects which show the best potential for ultimate development into viable commercial propositions. The aim is to encourage industrial innovation. THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS OF IRELAND
will award two prizes for projects with the best engineering content. THE SOCIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION OF IRELAND will award two prizes for the best projects in the Social Sciences. THE INSTITUTE OF FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY will award two prizes. GAELLINN will award two prizes for the best projects in Irish. 8
A daily newsheet produced by Young Citizen Magazine and Aer Lingus. Exhibitors are invited to contribute news, views, reports and cartoons on any aspect of the exhibition. LASTYEAR' S WINNING PROJECTAT THE AER LINGUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS EXHIBITION Location: Main Hall Sixteen-year-old Martynn Sheehan, a student at the Convent of Mercy, Moate, Co. Westmeath, was elected Aer Lingus Young Scientist of the Year in January last. She was nominated by Philips Electrical (Irl) Ltd. to take part in the European Philips contest for Young Scientists and Inventors and she competed against 32 young scientists from 15 countries. One of the youngest contestants in Eindhoven and the youngest ever Irish entrant, she was awarded a.Certificate of Distinction and a prize of £700. Her project was entitled "A requiem for germs - extracting antibiotics from twelve Irish lichens". Through her work on the project, she concluded that powerful 9
antibiotics capable of killing pathogenic bacteria may be locked in lichens, and she suggests that the vast areas of cut-away bogs in Ireland could be utilised for cultivation of lichens. The record of the Aer Lingus Young Scientists in the European arena is most impressive. Of the seven entrants to date, four were outright winners and three were placed in the top six awards.

CARAANDSORD MICROCOMPUTER EXHIBITION Location: Industries Hall

Cara Computer Systems (a division of Cara Data Processing) will display the range of SORD Microcomputers for which they are the Irish Distributors, at the Young Scientists Exhibition. SORD, one of Japan's leading microcomputer companies, are currently manufacturing their products in Ireland. A series of competitions will be held at the exhibition for students, teachers and the visiting public, whereby participants will discover the simplicity and flexibility of PIPS II - a highly simplified language unique to SORD.
