Sixteenth Annual Young Scientists Exhibition 1980

An Seu Taispeantas Deag na n-Eolaithe Oga 1980

Sponsored and organised by Aer Lingus

FOREWORD The 1960's was a significant decade in the history of Ireland's national airline . The first Boeing jet aircraft " St. Patrick" was delivered in November 1960 . Many new routes and offices were added to the network and the reservations centre at Dublin Airport was computerised . In 1965 Aer Lingus staged the first Young Scientists Exhibition in the Mansion House , Dublin. Today, as we enter the 1980's, the national airline operates an all jet fleet of 23 aircraft including 3 Boeing 747 jets carrying 2'% million passengers annually to destinations in Europe and North America . Airline personnel have successfully travelled the airways of the world to sell Irish aviation expertise and services and students come from many foreign countries for training in the "Aer Lingus school ". The airline also operates a chain of 23 hotels situated in London, Paris and the United States. The annual Young Scientists Exhibition has also undergone tremendous growth and development . Exhibitor numbers this year stand at 1,200, a significant increase on the 1965 total of 230 . There has been a steady improvement in the standard of projects exhibited in successive exhibitions and the subsequent achievements of our "Young Scientists" of former years provide much encouragement . In recent years the Aer Lingus Young Scientists have competed at international level in the Philips European Contest for Young Scientists and Inventors and they have been voted among the best in Europe. In recording success we must pay tribute to many people who make this event possible . Our sincere appreciation to the Department of Education and the National Board for Science and Technology , for their encouragement and support and to the Royal Dublin Society for the facilities and co-operation extended to us . Our thanks go also to Philips Electrical ( Ireland ) who sponsor our winner to their European Contest , to the World Book Company , the European Community office and many other prize-giving organisations associated with the exhibition. We wish to pay special tribute and offer thanks to our panel of judges for the wonderful work they do, and the teachers without whom we could not mount this exhibition. Finally, of course , Aer Lingus extends warm thanks to every student who participated . Each and every one of them must be congratulated for their efforts and achievements. It is our view in Aer Lingus that the Young Scientists Exhibition knows no boundaries and as sponsors we will continue to restructure and adapt the exhibition to accommodate the young scientists and technologists in their search for knowledge . We are very happy and proud to provide an annual forum for our talented young people.

FEATURE DISPLAYS AT THE AER LINGUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS EXHIBITION.

ACCESS TO KNOWLEDGE USING NEW TECHNOLOGIES Location:

Main Hall Annexe

The National Board for Science and Technology has on display 20 pieces of "hardware" which demonstrate modern techniques of information creation, search, presentation, transmission , storage and data base interaction. Demonstrations will be given of word-processing, computerised datanetwork, videotext transmission, facsimile transmission, microfiche material and programme learning computer packages.

The entry for the Philips Contest and which is on display at this exhibition was entitled "the concept of ecopolemiology as illustrated by a preliminary study of the bionomics of the earwig ". Its stated aim was "since insecticides are the main method of insect control employed at present it is necessary to make their use compatible with the natural control structure within the enviroment". The function of ecopolemiology is to study and evaluate these natural control methods. Since leaving school three years ago Jervis has been managing 75 acres of tillage on his father's farm. Recently he has commenced studies at Trinity College, Dublin, where he is doing a general science degree with zoology as his major subject.

What is being attempted simply is to expose as many people as possible to some new and not so new forms of knowledge communications. AER LINGUS TODAY ( An audio - visual presentation) Location:

How is Aer Lingus faring in a world of increasing competition and escalating costs? What is the airline doing to stabilise and hopefully to increase its profits so as to plan for further growth in the years ahead? Some of the answers are provided in a 12 minute audiovisual presentation.

AER LINGUS STUDENT TRAVEL CENTRE Location: Main Hall Students - if you're thinking of taking off in the next 12 months Aer Lingus has got just what you have been waiting for. A whole range of low, low fares to continental Europe specially worked out for you. It's called "Flying Lessons for Students". Why not come along to our stand and get a copy of the brochure now.

LAST YEAR' S "YOUNG SCIENTIST OF THE YEAR" PROJECT ( JERVIS GOOD) Location: Main Hall Jervis Good, Glenny, Riverstick, Co. Cork was the winner of last year's top award in the Young Scientists Exhibition. His project was an examination of insect control by insecticides using the earwig as an example. Jervis subsequently developed his project for entry in the Philips European Contest for Young Scientist and Inventors which was held is Oslo where he won one of the seven top awards of ÂŁ500.
