FOREWORD Ireland's economic future will depend largely on the success with which the latest scientific and technological methods and techniques are applied in all sectors of the economy. It is fortunate, then, that ever increasing numbers of Irish men and women have shown such high capacity in meeting the demands of this technological age. The formation and growth of Aer Lingus provide one example of this capacity, and here at this year's Young Scientists Exhibition an audio visual display featuring the work of our Production Department provides further evidence of the high technological competence of Aer Lingus. The achievements of our "Young Scientists" of former years provide many more encouraging examples. Our very first "Young Scientist" is now engaged in cancer research in Texas. Some have gone as scientists into industry, some have become science teachers, while others are continuing their scientific studies, many on valuable scholarships. Last year's Young Scientist of the Year, Mary Kelly(whose winning project is again on display this year), went on to compete with young scientists and inventors from 16 countries and to win the top award of ÂŁ1,000 at the Philip's European Contest for Young Scientists in Madrid. The winner of this year's exhibition will qualify for entry to the 1977 contest to be held in Paris. For this year's exhibition we introduced a new system of categorisation for individual projects. The seven categories of previous years have been replaced by three broad categories Biological Sciences, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, and Environmental and Social Sciences. Group projects, which generally adopt an inter-disciplinary approach merit a category of their own. Entries this year number over 500 and involve over 1,000 young people. The prize money has now reached a new total of ÂŁ4,500. A further innovation concerns our judges panel, on which you will note twenty-five new names. In welcoming the newcomers I wish also to express our appreciation of the wonderful work done by their predecessors over the years. It is the involvement of these distinguished men and women which gives the Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition much of its stature. I would also like to thank
the Royal Dublin Society for the facilities of co-operation extended to us so courteously over the years. Our thanks must also go to Field Enterprises Educational Corporation for making special prizes available for schools and teachers; to the European Community office for the prize of a trip to Brussels for the winning group; and to the Philips organisation for giving our winner the opportunity to compete in their international contest. Once again I must pay very special tribute to our teachers, whether in attendance at the exhibition or not. They deserve ourthanks and appreciation in high measure. As the exhibition continues to grow we have to depend more and more on teachers to help us select entries and make arrangements to stage the exhibition. We congratulate all of them on the fine example they are setting for the young scientists in their charge. Finally, our thanks to all the exhibitors-with a special thought for those who will not feature in the prizewinners' list. Without them, truly there would be no Young Scientists Exhibition, as we all know it.

These categories are subdivided into Junior, Intermediate and Senior sections (Junior 12-14, Intermediate 14-16, Senior 16-18), and projects are listed alphabetically in the sections. Note: Projects have been classified according to the descriptions supplied by the exhibitors. The judges reserve the right to transfer projects to a different category. Group projects are accepted in a separate section and are not classified according to subject discipline. They are divided into Junior, Intermediate and Senior sections. Duaiseanna Breise Additional Prizes A set of World Book Encyclopedia will be awarded to • a school in the group projects section and a school in the individual projects section. The prize will be awarded to the schools scoring the highest number of points on a cumulative points system. • A copy of Science Year Annual will be awarded to teachers of top award winners (including first prizewinners) in the senior sections. • Certificates of Merit and suitable prizes will be awarded to exhibitors whose projects are highly commended and Certificates of Display to those whose work reaches an acceptable standard.

Miss Mary Kelly, a student of Our Lady's Secondary School, Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan, won the top award in the 1976 Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition with a project entitled "A geological and historical survey of some disused mines in Ireland." Miss Kelly was the first Aer Lingus Young Scientist to compete at international level when she was nominated by Philips Electrical (Ireland) Ltd to compete in their international contest held in Madrid, in June last. She was one of the youngest entrants in the contest, at which 16 countries were represented by their top award-winning young scientists. In Madrid, Mary exhibited the same project which had won in Dublin and emerged as the top winner with a prize of £1,000. The international jury of scientists were very impressed by the initiative and unassisted work which Miss Kelly's project demonstrated. "Her scientific curiosity led her to develop her own simple methods of measuring the parameters which were required for determining the location and composition of significant ores on the sites of the old mines. This was particularly remarkable because she had to rely entirely on her own initiative and enthusiasm throughout the investigations." Miss Kelly's win at international level was very encouraging for Aer Lingus and all those associated with our annual exhibition. It was also an endorsement of the very high teaching standards obtaining in our schools and colleges. Mary, who received a bursary from Bula Mining Company, is now studying science at University College, Dublin.

European Communities Exhibit Location: Main Hall (Presented by the Irish Office of the Community)
This exhibit is designed to test your knowledge of the European Community and inform you of what the community means for Ireland. It cons sts of questions to which vistors respond at the touch of a button. If they are correct the answer is flashed in colourful graphic form on an eye-level screen. If they answer incorrectly, they will automatically be invited to try again from a list of alternative answers. 11 10
The exhibit also features panels depicting Ireland's contribution through the centuries to the development of Europe, as well as her current contribution through her membership of the EEC. A wide range of easy-to-read literature about the Community is distributed, free of charge, and visitors may enrol themselves on mailing lists.
Biological Sciences

An audio-visual record of one of Aer Lingus' highly successful export businesses, featuring the wideranging, advanced skills that characterise the work of the airline's maintenance base at Dublin Airport. Aer Lingus with an all jet fleet of two B747s, four 707s, nine 737s and four BAC-One Elevens, operates up to 400 flights per week in and out of its home base at Dublin Airport. The airline operates passenger and cargo services to 31 destinations in 12 countries and carries over 1.75 million passengers each year. The maintenance and overhaul of an aircraft is an important and complex procedure requiring wide-ranging sophisticated skills. Before an aircraft joins the fleet it is issued with a Certificate of Airworthiness and thereafter it undergoes very detailed examinations at regular intervals. The Aer Lingus Production Department at Dublin Airport, with a work force of over 1,400 undertakes all the maintenance and overhaul work on the airline's own fleet and also in recent years has been highly successful in exporting its technical and training expertise abroad. At present, the Production Department is providing a wide range of services to some 50 overseas customers. More than 25% of its work is now devoted to foreign contracts, earning an estimated revenue of ÂŁ6 million in 1976.
