FOREWORD When one has travelled some distance into unfamiliar territory, it is a good idea to stop and take bearings. With ten Young Scientists' Exhibitions behind us, it seems timely to ask, did the original idea serve a useful purpose? Supported by the views of many experts, we are in a position to answer in the affirmative: the increased entry in successive exhibitions; the range and quality of projects undertaken; and the interest of the public in. them is proof that the idea has succeeded in its main purpose. We believe that scientific training during the next decade will continue to be of the greatest importance. The society which is evolving in Ireland clearly calls for greater numbers of skilled technicians. A proper scientific education for our children is essential, therefore, to safeguard the future prosperity of the country. Education in science must be regarded as good in itself, and as an asset that confers a particular benefit on the community. Implicit in our work to encourage young people to take a greater interest in science is the hope that more and more of them will adopt it as a career. The future growth of Aer Lingus will depend in great measure on its technical staff. The company accepts, therefore, that it has a particular responsibility to co-operate with those who are concerned with raising the level of scientific training in this country. We believe that sponsorship of an exhibition of science projects carried out by young people is a practical contribution. This year marks the extension of the Young Scientists' Exhibition to include group projects for the first time. This decision was essentially tentative and experimental, but the response has been overwhelming and has set us unexpected problems in catering for such large numbers of group projects. We can only hope that exhibitors and teachers will bear with us while we attempt to assimilate this newest departure. Once again we are happy to acknowledge that the Young Scientists' Exhibition could not take place without the encouragement and dedication of teachers everywhere, and of our judges' panel. These dedicated people
are, in their work, laying the foundations for the achievements of our future scientists. We have this year more participants than ever before. Our prize list is extensive, but of course many exhibitors will not feature in it. Perhaps they, their parents and teachers will be disappointed, but we hope not discouraged. If the Young Scientists' Exhibition continues to be a genuine competition there must be a process of selection. However, participation in the exhibition has its own reward in terms of ideas exchanged, experience gained from exhibiting a project and knowledge obtained from a process of research. There are really no losers in an exhibition like this. We wish to thank all the competitors for their part in making the exhibition an exciting and very important event in the Irish school calendar. To our panel of judges, all eminent scientists, we again extend warmest thanks, on our own behalf and on behalf of all competitors. Without their great talents and continuing interest, nothing like the Young Scientists' Exhibition of 1975 would be possible.
